With psychological assessment and testing being part of psychologists' identity, Portuguese and international studies have highlighted less investment in assessing children during their early years. This research aims to characterize the use of testing and other psychological assessment tools on children between 0-7 years old in Portugal. The sample is composed of 63 psychologists who answered an online inquiry within the scope of a broader study. The analysis of instruments most used allowed to reinforce that these mainly consist of tests (and less of rating scales), and also that the cognitive field is more represented than the social-emotional one, with the Wechsler WISC-III and WPPSI-R scales and the Griffiths Mental Development Scales being the most frequently mentioned instruments. The discussion of the results points to the need of further investigation aimed at guaranteeing the psychometric quality of instruments used, and of significant investment in training the field's professionals. The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire – Revised (EPQ-R) assesses the three fundamental personality dimensions: Psychoticism, Extraversion, Neuroticism, including a Lie/Social Desirability scale. This paper presents the results of the normalization study of EPQ-R in the Portuguese population, which were obtained through a large and representative community sample. A sample of 1689 subjects participated in this study (783 men and 906 women, ages 16-60 years old) from several geographic areas in Portugal. The norms of the Portuguese Version of EPQ-R were constructed considering gender and age, and significant statistical differences between several groups were found. Through a model of Item Response Theory, a DIF analysis was performed and showed the psychometric quality of the EPQ-R items in measuring the N, E, P, and L constructs, concerning gender and age variables. The present study examined the psychometric properties of a brief measure of the Triarchic model of psychopathy based on the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory (YPI-Tri-S) among a forensic sample of detained female youth offenders (M = 16.41 years; SD = 1.19 years) from Portugal. Results supported the expected three-factor structure and cross-gender measurement invariance. The YPI-Tri-S showed good psychometric properties in terms of factor structure, internal consistency, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and criterion-related validity. Findings suggest that the YPI-Tri-S is a valid and reliable measure of the Triarchic model of psychopathy, which can be used to assess female juvenile offenders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The propensity to morally disengage can be an essential driver of unethical, antisocial, and criminal behavior. The present study examines the psychometric properties of the Propensity to Morally Disengage Scale (PMDS) among a convenience sample of 242 male and female participants (M = 30.19 years, SD = 12.78, range = 16–77) from Portugal. The expected one-factor structure obtained an adequate fit using confirmatory factor analysis. Internal consistency/reliability was adequate as measured by the alpha and omega coefficients. Convergent validity (i.e. with dark traits, low self-control, violence evaluation, and antisociality/criminality tendencies measures), divergent validity (i.e. with basic empathy and light traits of personality measures), and criterion-related validity (e.g. with trouble with the law, arrested by police, sentenced to prison variables) were demonstrated with Pearson and point-biserial correlations. Measurement invariance across gender was established. Significant gender differences in the PMDS scores were found, with males scoring significantly higher than females. Abstract More realistic assessment tools are imperative for a better understanding of the impact of age-related cognitive deficits on functional status. With this in mind, we probed the ability of the EcoKitchen, a non-immersive virtual environment task with increasing executively demanding kitchen chores, to detect the effects of aging on the simulated everyday functioning of healthy adults. Fifty-three adults (age between 23 and 77 years) were assessed with the EcoKitchen and a set of conventional paper-and-pencil neuropsychological tests. The associations between the baseline features of study participants and each of the two different assessment methods were examined. The associations between the EcoKitchen variables and an executive composite score were also explored. Our results showed that older individuals present deficits in the performance of both the EcoKitchen task and standard assessment methods. Notably, we found that, unlike conventional tests, accuracy in the EcoKitchen task was not related to the education level and IQ score of participants. Moreover, the EcoKitchen performance time was significantly correlated with executive tests. We have demonstrated that the EcoKitchen task, an ecologically relevant computerized neuropsychological assessment tool, might be more suitable than classic paper-and-pencil tests to capture the impact of aging on everyday cognitive function, as it proved to be less prone to the influence of confounding factors. Background: There are numerous scales for screening cognitive performance and thus identification of any potential deficits, but in spite of the vulnerability of the prison population to such problems, there has been no adequate validation of screening tools specifically for use with prisoners or others in the criminal justice system. Aim: To validate the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) for use with prisoners. Methods: 100 adult prisoners in one Portuguese prison were randomly invited by clinicians to take part in this study. A same size sample of community‐living adult non‐offenders of similar age was selected from the MoCA's normative study database in Portugal. For both groups, the key inclusion criterion was fluency in the Portuguese language. All participants completed the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the MoCA, both in Portuguese translation. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated as an index of internal consistency and Pearson's r correlations calculated. Group performances were compared using independent samples t‐test. Covariance analysis (ANCOVA) was computed with level of education as covariate. To measure the magnitude of the effect, ηp2 ${\eta }_{p}^{2}$ was used. A receiver operating characteristics curve analysis was computed to evaluate the discriminatory accuracy of MoCA and MMSE. Results: The MoCA showed a 'reasonable' internal consistency index (α = 0.75) as well as positive and significant correlations with the MMSE. As a cognitive measure, however, the MoCA showed consistently superior psychometric properties and higher discriminatory accuracy (MoCA = 89%) than the MMSE (65%). According to the Youden index, the optimal cut‐off point for the MoCA is below 24 points, whereas for the MMSE, it is below 27. The literature lacks information on the performance of patients with brain tumors on the Wechsler Intelligence Scales. This study aimed to explore the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III) performance profile of 23 consecutive patients with brain tumors and 23 matched controls selected from the Portuguese WAIS-III standardization sample, using the technical manual steps recommended for score interpretation. The control group was demographically matched to the tumor group regarding gender, age, education, profession, and geographic region. The technical manual steps recommended for score interpretation were applied. Patients with brain tumors had significantly lower performances on the Performance IQ, Full-Scale IQ, Perceptual Organization Index, Working Memory Index, Processing Speed Index, Arithmetic, Object Assembly, and Picture Arrangement, though all scaled scores were within the normal range according to the manual tables. Only Vocabulary and Comprehension scatter scores were statistically different between groups. No strengths or weaknesses were found for either group. The mean discrepancy scores do not appear to have clinical value for this population. The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) of Schraw and Dennison (1994) assesses two general metacognitive dimensions in adolescents and adults: knowledge of cognition, which includes three subprocesses, and regulation of cognition, which has five subprocesses. This study shows the process of translation and adaptation of MAI to the Portuguese population. Internal consistency in the dimensions knowledge and regulation of cognition was 0.82 and 0.90, respectively. The results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis suggest a factor of second order based on the correlation of two main dimensions. The declarative knowledge subscale showed better criterion validity compared to the other subscales. The MAI constitutes an adapted instrument to the Portuguese reality both for the assessment of a global metacognition score and in their two main dimensions, allowing research into the performance in learning and training processes in adults and adolescents. Based on the P-E-N Model, the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire - Revised (EPQ-R; S. Eysenck, H. Eysenck, & Barrett, 1985) assesses the three fundamental personality dimensions: Psychoticism (P), Extraversion (E), and Neuroticism (N). The term “executive function” has been used to describe several higher-order cognitive processes. This study examined the processing speed, shifting, planning, and verbal fluency of a sample of 50 Portuguese children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and 50 typically developing children (TDC; chronological-age-matched controls) between 8 and 12 years of age to evaluate the children’s executive functioning. Compared to TDC, children with DD revealed significant processing speed, shifting, and verbal fluency deficits. After controlling for differences in the general intellectual ability, significant group differences remained for shifting, verbal fluency and marginally for processing speed. No significant differences in planning ability were observed between the groups. No significant interaction of group, gender, and age was found for any of the executive functions measures studied. Word productivity in both semantic and phonemic verbal fluency tasks decreased significantly over the 60 seconds for both groups. Shifting was the only significant predictor of DD in the binary logistic regression analysis and yielded the highest area under the curve value (receiver operating characteristics curve analysis). Therefore, although these findings highlight the presence of specific executive functions deficits in children with DD, they should not be interpreted as indicative of the presence or absence of this learning disorder. The International Working Group on Alzheimer's disease ( AD) suggested the free and cued selective reminding test ( FCSRT) to assess memory, as it showed high sensitivity and specificity in the differentiation of AD from healthy controls and other dementias. The FCSRT involves the use of selective reminding with semantic cueing in memory assessment. This study aims to validate the FCSRT for mild cognitive impairment ( MCI) and AD through the analysis of the diagnostic accuracy and the suggestion of cut-off scores. Patients were classified into two groups according to standard criteria: MCI ( n = 100) and AD ( n = 70). A matched control group ( n = 101) of cognitively healthy subjects was included. The reliability and the validity of the FCSRT were analysed on the immediate ( IR) and delayed ( DR) recalls. The Cronbach's alpha was 0.915 for the IR and 0.879 for the DR. The total recall measures revealed good areas under the curve for MCI ( IR: .818; DR: .828) and excellent for AD ( IR: .987; DR: .991). Furthermore, the MCI group was subdivided with respect to a non-similar/similar AD pattern of impairment, with almost half of the subjects showing an AD-like decline. This analysis represents a novel contribution regarding the properties of the FCSRT in illustrating the heterogeneity of MCI at baseline. The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) is the most broadly used cognitive screening instrument in clinical and research contexts. The MMSE was administered to a community-based sample of cognitively healthy adults (n = 850), stratified according to several sociodemographic variables, with a distribution similar to that observed in the Portuguese population. This study aimed to analyze the influence of sociodemographic (age, gender, education level, marital and employment status, geographic region, geographic localization, and residence area) and health variables (subjective memory complaints of the participant and evaluated by the informant, depressive symptoms, and family history of dementia) on the participants’ performance on the MMSE and to establish normative data for the Portuguese population. Education level and age significantly contributed to the prediction of the MMSE scores and explained 26% of its variance. Regarding health variables, only the subjective memory complaints of the participant showed a small contribution (4%) to the variance of the MMSE scores. To characterize all hospitalizations held in mainland Portugal (2010–2015) with dementia-related agitation based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) coding, and to investigate whether there is a relationship between agitation and hospitalization outcomes. A retrospective observational study was conducted using an administrative dataset containing data from all mainland Portuguese public hospitals. Only hospitalization episodes for patients aged over 65 years who have received a dementia diagnosis ascertained by an ICD-9-CM code of dementia with behavioral disturbance (294.11 and 294.21) and dementia without behavioral disturbance (294.10 and 294.20) were selected. Episodes were further grouped according to the presence of an agitation code. For each episode, demographic data and hospitalization outcomes, including length of stay (LoS), in-hospital mortality, discharge destination and all-cause hospital readmissions, were sourced from the dataset. Comparative analyses were performed and multivariable logistic methods were used to estimate the adjusted associations between agitation (exposure) and outcomes. Overall, 53,156 episodes were selected, of which 6,586 had an agitation code. These were mostly related to male, younger inpatients (mean 81.19 vs. 83.29 years, p < 0.001), had a higher comorbidity burden, stayed longer at the hospital (median 9.00 vs. 8.00 days, p < 0.001) and frequently ended being transferred to another facility with inpatient care. Agitation was shown to independently increase LoS (aOR = 1.385; 95%CI:1.314–1.461), but not the risk of a fatal outcome (aOR = 0.648; 95%CI:0.600–0.700). Abstract: Temporal lobe epilepsies are associated with cognitive dysfunctions in memory which are important clues currently used clinically for the lateralization of the epileptic focus in evaluations for epilepsy surgery. Because these lobes also contain the primary auditory cortex, the study of auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) is a candidate, not yet established, complementary method to characterize epilepsy-induced dysfunction. We aimed to establish the clinical usefulness of auditory evoked potentials for the study of pediatric symptomatic temporal lobe epilepsies. A group of 17 patients (ages 4–16) with symptomatic epilepsies undergoing evaluation for epilepsy surgery epilepsy was submitted to auditory evoked potentials using 35-channel scalp EEG recordings. A control group of 10 healthy volunteers was studied with the same protocol. The P100 and mismatch negativity (MMN) potential latencies and normalized amplitudes were studied. We also performed a voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) to determine the anatomical areas associated with changes in the AEPs. Eleven patients had temporal lobe epilepsy, three had frontal lobe epilepsy, and three had occipital lobe epilepsy. Latencies for the P100 were normal in 15/17 and in 11/17 for the MMN, with no consistent correlation with the epilepsy type. The MMN amplitude was abnormal in 7/17 patients, all with temporal lobe epilepsies (sensitivity of 64%). Of these patients, four had a decreased MMN associated with a Heschl's gyrus lesion in the VLSM, and three had an increased MMN associated with hippocampal lesion. No extratemporal epilepsy showed MMN amplitude abnormalities (specificity of 100%). The P100 amplitude was abnormal in 3/17, two with temporal and one with frontal lobe epilepsies. The auditory MMN has a high specificity but a low sensitivity for temporal lobe epilepsy in symptomatic pediatric epilepsies. Cognitive decline assessment implies measuring discrepancies between the subject's previous (premorbid) and the current levels of functioning. However, this information is rarely available and clinicians have to infer it by using indirect methods. This article provides an historical overview of the different methods that have been developed for premorbid intelligence estimation, from the first qualitative methods to the most recent quantitative approaches. The discussion sustains that the most valid methods for premorbid intelligence estimation are those that combine current level of the subject's performance and demographic variables in regression formulas. This study analysed the usefulness of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition in identifying specific cognitive impairments that are linked to developmental dyslexia (DD) and the diagnostic utility of the most common profiles in a sample of 100 Portuguese children (50 dyslexic and 50 normal readers) between the ages of 8 and 12 years. Children with DD exhibited significantly lower scores in the Verbal Comprehension Index (except the Vocabulary subtest), Freedom from Distractibility Index (FDI) and Processing Speed Index subtests, with larger effect sizes than normal readers in Information, Arithmetic and Digit Span. The Verbal-Performance IQs discrepancies, Bannatyne pattern and the presence of FDI; Arithmetic, Coding, Information and Digit Span subtests (ACID) and Symbol Search, Coding, Arithmetic and Digit Span subtests (SCAD) profiles (full or partial) in the lowest subtests revealed a low diagnostic utility. However, the receiver operating characteristic curve and the optimal cut-off score analyses of the composite ACID; FDI and SCAD profiles scores showed moderate accuracy in correctly discriminating dyslexic readers from normal ones. These results suggested that in the context of a comprehensive assessment, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition provides some useful information about the presence of specific cognitive disabilities in DD. Abstract: Panayiotopoulos syndrome (PS) is a common epilepsy syndrome associated with rare clinical seizures and unknown localization of the epileptogenic area. Despite findings of normal development in patients with PS, recent neuropsychological studies point to subtle and diverse cognitive impairments. No well-outlined hypothesis about the localization of the brain dysfunction responsible for these impairments has been proposed. We further explored the cognitive dysfunctions in PS and made inferences on the most likely anatomical localization of brain impairment. A group of 19 patients (aged 6–12) with PS was rated according to spike activity and lateralization. The patients were submitted to a neuropsychological evaluation to assess general intelligence, memory, language, visual–perceptual abilities, attention, and executive functions. Using 35-channel scalp EEG recordings, the N170 face-evoked event-related potential (ERP) was obtained to assess the functional integrity of the ventral pathway. All patients with PS showed normal IQ but subtle and consistent neurocognitive impairments. Namely, we found abnormalities in the copy task of the Rey–Osterrieth Complex Figure and in the Narrative Memory Test. There was no correlation between neuropsychological impairments with spike activity and hemispheric spike lateralization. The N170 ERP was normal in all patients except for one. Our neuropsychological findings demonstrate impairments in visual–perceptual abilities and in semantic processing. These findings, paired with the absence of occipital lobe dysfunction in all neuropsychological studies of PS performed to this date, support the existence of parietal lobe dysfunction. Verbal fluency tests are sensitive to different neuropsychological functions used in assessing the integrity of the frontal and temporal lobes. In this study, 120 healthy children (aged 7 to 10 years) were examined through a semantic and a phonemic verbal fluency test. The results of exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and correlation analysis seem to indicate that these two verbal fluency tests depend on different neurocognitive functions. The number of words produced in the phonemic task was significantly lower than the semantic task, indicating that is cognitively more complex. No gender differences were found, but a significant effect was observed for children's age, showing the sensitivity of these verbal fluency tests to neurodevelopmental processes. Cognitive screening tests are well-established tools for detecting cognitive impairment, but concerns regarding the influence of premorbid intelligence on patient’s performance and cognitive status classification remain. Risk of inaccurate assessment especially affects the elders with high or low premorbid intelligence (who are more likely to be misclassified). The present study examines the influence of premorbid intelligence assessed by the TeLPI (an irregular words reading test) on 2 cognitive screening tests, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), in healthy participants and patients with cognitive impairments (mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease). Results show that premorbid IQ influences the MMSE and the MoCA scores in both the groups, predicting variance from 8.4% to 33.2%, according to test and group analyzed. Hence, we propose that whenever the MMSE or the MoCA is used, premorbid IQ evaluation should also be considered to ensure correct interpretation and classification. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a brief instrument developed for the screening of milder forms of cognitive impairment, having surpassed the well-known limitations of the MMSE. The aim of the present study was to validate the MoCA as well as its short version, which was proposed by the NINDS-CSN VCI Harmonization Standards for screening Vascular Dementia (VaD) patients. The results, based on a homogeneous sample of 34 VaD patients, indicate that the MoCA is a psychometrically valid and reliable instrument for cognitive screening in VaD patients, showing excellent discriminant validity. Both the full and short versions of the MoCA had excellent diagnostic accuracy in discriminating VaD patients, exhibiting an area under curve (AUC) higher than the MMSE [AUC(MoCA full version) = .950; 95% IC = .868-.988; AUC(MoCA short version) = .936; 95% IC = .849-.981; AUC(MMSE) = .860; 95% IC = .754-.932]. With a cutoff below 17 on the MoCA full version and 8 on the short version, the results for sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and classification accuracy were superior compared to the MMSE. Abstract: Considerable research has shown that neuropsychological tests are predictive of real-world driving ability. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is a brief cognitive test that has been commonly used in the assessment of older drivers. However, this test has inherent problems that limit its validity to evaluate cognitive abilities related to driving and to screen for driving impairments in non-demented people. Therefore, it is useful to test new screening instruments that may predict potential unsafe drivers who require an in-depth neuropsychological assessment in a specialised centre. To date, the utility of the Addenbrooke''s Cognitive Examination Revised (ACE-R) as an indicator of driving ability has not been established. In the current study, fifty older drivers (mean age=73.1years) who were referred for a psychological assessment, the protocol of which included the ACE-R, underwent an on-road driving test. Using linear discriminant analyses, the results highlighted the higher classification accuracy of the ACE-R compared to the MMSE score, particularly for detecting unsafe drivers. Measures of visuospatial and executive functions, which are not incorporated in the MMSE score, had an incremental value in the prediction of driving ability. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a brief instrument developed for the screening of milder forms of cognitive impairment, having surpassed the well-known limitations of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The aim of the present study was to validate the MoCA as a cognitive screening test for behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bv-FTD) by examining its psychometric properties and diagnostic accuracy. Three matched subgroups of participants were considered: bv-FTD (n = 50), Alzheimer disease (n = 50), and a control group of healthy adults (n = 50). Compared with the MMSE, the MoCA demonstrated consistently superior psychometric properties and discriminant capacity, providing comprehensive information about the patients’ cognitive profiles. The diagnostic accuracy of MoCA for bv-FTD was extremely high (area under the curve AUC [MoCA] = 0.934, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.866-.974; AUC [MMSE] = 0.772, 95% CI = 0.677-0.850). With a cutoff below 17 points, the MoCA results for sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and classification accuracy were significantly superior to those of the MMSE. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a brief cognitive instrument for screening milder forms of cognitive impairment. The present study aimed to analyze the influence of sociodemographic (age, gender, educational level, marital and employment status, geographic region, geographic localization, and residence area) and health variables (subjective memory complaints of the participant and evaluated by the informant, depressive symptoms, and family history of dementia) on the participants' performance on the MoCA. The investigation was carried out in a Portuguese community-based sample of 650 cognitively healthy adults, who were representative of the distribution observed in the Portuguese population. Educational level and age significantly contributed to the prediction of the MoCA scores, explaining 49% of the variance. Regarding health variables, only the subjective memory complaints of the participant showed a small contribution (9%) to the variance on the MoCA scores. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a brief instrument developed for the screening of milder forms of cognitive impairment. The present study aims to assess the construct related validity of the MoCA through the establishment of the factorial, convergent, and discriminant related validities, and the reliability of data. In a Portuguese sample of 830 participants, several models were tested using Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Although all tested models showed a good fit, the six-factor model based on the conceptual model proposed by the MoCA's authors showed a significantly better fit. The results allowed us to establish the factorial, convergent, and discriminant validity of this six-dimensional structure. An overall psychometric adequacy of the items, and a good reliability were also found. This study contributes to overcome an important gap in the construct related validity of this instrument. The present findings corroborate the six-dimensional structure of the MoCA and provide good evidence of the construct related validity. Information regarding cognitive abilities in earlier stages of life is essential to ascertain if and to what extent these may have declined. When unavailable, clinicians rely on estimate methods. One of the contemporary methods used worldwide combines performance on irregular word reading test with demographics since it has shown to provide reliable estimates of premorbid ability. Hence, a reading test portuguese irregular word reading test (TeLPI) was developed, filling an important gap in the neuropsychological evaluation of Portuguese speakers. Using 46 irregular, infrequent Portuguese words, TeLPI was validated against Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)-III (N = 124), and regression-based equations were determined to estimate premorbid IQ considering TeLPI scores and demographic variables. TeLPI scores accounted for 63% of the variance of WAIS-III Full-Scale IQ, 62% of Verbal IQ, and 47% of Performance IQ and thus were considered valid for premorbid intelligence estimation. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a cognitive screening instrument created with the purpose of overcoming some of the insufficiencies of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The MoCA evaluates more cognitive areas and is comprised of more complex tasks as compared with the MMSE, which makes it a more sensitive instrument in the detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), a state that often progresses to dementia. In this study we performed an analysis of the psychometric and diagnostic properties of the Portuguese experimental version of the MoCA in a clinical sample of 212 subjects with MCI and several dementia subtypes in a memory clinic setting. Additionally, we performed a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to assess the MoCA’s latent factorial structure. In a clinical population, the MoCA is a valid and reliable instrument with good psychometric properties, revealing high sensitivity in identifying MCI and dementia patients who generally score within the normal range on the MMSE. By using the parcels method, CFA results showed very good/excellent adjustment indexes. The practical implications of this CFA study allow us to propose a two factor model factorial structure for the MoCA: a first factor designated MEMORY, which includes memory, language and orientation subtests (the latter being closely correlated with the former), and a second factor designated ATTENTION/EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS, comprised of attention, executive functions and visuospacial abilities tasks. Coimbra's Neuropsychological Assessment Battery contains, amongst several other assessment instruments, a Colours Rapid Naming test for children aged 5-6, a Digits Rapid Naming test and a Shapes and Colours Rapid Naming test, both for children aged 7-15. This work presents data concerning these tests psychometric properties, namely temporal stability, tests' intercorrelations, degree of relationship with academic grades and differentiation of groups of children with and without learning problems. AbstractThe dark core of personality is a recent construct that encompasses the malevolent, antagonistic, and aversive side of human nature that represents the common inner core of dark personality traits. The aim of the present study is to develop a short, multidimensional, and invariant version of the dark core of personality D70 measure. Two samples of participants were used in the current study (N = 570, M = 35.42 years, SD = 11.41, range = 18–69; N = 242, M = 30.19 years, SD = 12.78, range = 16–77). The new D25 measure was developed, consisting of five factors – Callousness, Deceitfulness, Vindictiveness, Narcissistic Entitlement, and Sadism. All the structural models examined obtained adequate fits (1-factor, 5-factor, 5-factor bifactor, 5-factor 2nd order), but the 5-factor 2nd order model was considered the best option. Internal consistency/reliability, as measured by the alpha and omega coefficients and more traditional indicators, was mainly good. Construct validity (e.g., with moral disengagement, low self-control, and empathy measures) and criterion-related validity (e.g., with justice-involvement variables) were demonstrated. Scalar measurement invariance across gender and age was established, with male participants and younger participants scoring significantly higher than female participants and older participants. The prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases has been significantly increasing in the last decades, and it is expected to continue to grow. These health disorders can impair patients' decision-making capacity in healthcare. The capacity to make healthcare decisions is a fundamental pillar of informed consent, therefore, it should be carefully assessed. Clinicians' assessment, when not supported by a standardized tool, has revealed to be unreliable, so the recourse to an instrument of capacity assessment is crucial. The present paper aims to identify and summarize published instruments of healthcare decision-making capacity. To do so, a search of peer-reviewed articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish was conducted. A total of eighteen articles, detailing seventeen assessment instruments were selected. Instruments differ on format, structure, assessed abilities and psychometric properties. Likewise, instruments' targeted population also varies, with a few being specifically developed for patients with dementia. Although a high number of instruments were found, there is still no gold standard for healthcare decision-making capacity assessment. The lack of a gold standard highlights the need for more research in this field, as well as an effort to develop guidelines and normative data, in order to improve clinical practices. • In nursing homes, neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are particularly frequent. • Cognition, functional status, needs and psychotropic drugs all correlate with NPS. • Unmet needs and hypnotic/sedatives shown to increase the risk of presenting NPS. • Identifying and modifying these factors would benefit residents' symptomatology. • Findings conform with the unmet needs model, placing emphasis on needs assessment. This study aimed to explore neuropsychiatric symptoms' (NPS) risk factors in a sample of nursing home residents. A cross-sectional study was conducted. Residents over 65 years were included, unless they had a known major psychiatric diagnosis. The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) was completed, and other measures included residents' sociodemographic characteristics, cognition, functional impairment, regular drugs and number of needs. To explore potential risk factors, a logistic regression was conducted with the presence of NPS (NPI-10 ≥ 1) as dependent variable. Additional exploratory analyses were conducted based on a sub-syndrome approach, and three multivariate models were repeated considering the psychotic, affective and behaviour syndromes as dependent variables. A total of 140 residents were included (age: 83.71 ± 7.29 years). More than half (50.4%) presented at least one NPS. NPI-10 showed significant correlations with cognition (r s =-0.177, p = 0.042), functional impairment (r s = 0.174, p = 0.043), unmet needs (r s = 0.245, p = 0.004) and nervous system-acting drugs (r s = 0.271, p = 0.002), particularly anxiolytics (r s = 0.175, p = 0.047), antidepressants (r s = 0.204, p = 0.019) and hypnotics/sedatives (U = 2434.5, p = 0.028). However, in the multivariate analysis only unmet needs (OR = 1.30; 95% CI: 1.008–1.670) and hypnotic/sedatives (OR = 4.66; 95% CI: 1.132–19.144) showed an independent association with the presence of NPS. Regarding the additional models, unmet needs and literacy, antidepressants and hypnotic/sedatives, and cognitive status, showed to contribute to explain the variability of psychotic, affective and behaviour syndromes, respectively. Identifiable and modifiable factors, including unmet needs and prescribed psychotropic drugs, could have contributed to NPS in this sample, suggesting a role for targeted non-pharmacological and person-centred approaches directed to residents' unmet needs. We examine the psychometric properties of the Weinberger Adjustment Inventory (WAI) from a modern psychometric perspective, including second-order models, better estimation of reliability, and measurement invariance, among a sample of young adults (N = 610, M = 21.33 years, SD = 3.09 years) from Portugal. Results indicated that only the four-factor intercorrelated confirmatory models of the WAI Distress and Restraint scales, and the two-factor intercorrelated confirmatory models of the WAI Defensiveness scales showed adequate fits. The BANC is an individually administered battery designed to assess a wide range of neurocognitive functions (memory, language, attention, executive functions, motor functions, and laterality) in children aged 5 to 15 years old. This study aimed to obtain regression-based norms for 16- and 17-years old. The standardization sample of the BANC was used (Simões et al., 2016), and it comprises 1104 children and adolescents stratified by age (5 – 15 years, n ≈ 100 per age group), gender, school grade, residential and geographic zones. Regression analyses found a significant predictive effect of age and they allowed the calculation of algorithms for estimating normative data for adolescents aged 16 and 17 years. The regression-based norms revealed adequate accuracy and their application makes it possible to extend the assessment of neurocognitive functioning until the end of adolescence. Abstract Objective Method Results Conclusions This study analyzes the psychometric properties of the two forms (self-report and informant) of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult version (BRIEF-A) in a sample of healthy Portuguese adults.The participants were 608 adults, 304 of whom answered the self-report form (ages 18–59; 137 male and 167 female) and 304 who answered the informant form (ages 18–70; 110 male and 194 female).The internal consistency for the indexes and the Global Executive Composite was very good (≥.90), whereas for the scales they were either acceptable (between .70 and .80) or good (≥.80), except for the Inhibit scale in both forms. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test seven competing factor models for each of the forms. The original two-factor model (Behavioral Regulation and Metacognition Indexes) showed a slightly better model fit than the three-factor model (Behavioral Regulation, Emotional Regulation, and Metacognition Indexes) in both forms. This article aims to describe relevant aspects of the current status of the use of psychological tests in Portugal. The sample consisted of 1523 psychology professionals and was based on their answers to an online questionnaire about practices, attitudes and problems related to psychological testing. The results show that a vast majority of respondents (aprox. 90%) use tests in their professional practice, mostly for evaluation/diagnosis or screening purposes, and to evaluate subjects from school age up to 64 years of age. The results underline a favorable attitude towards the importance of training on testing methods, and the consideration that these can be of great help, the need for legislation and standards in this specific area, and a clear adherence to the idea that tests should be used solely by psychologists. This study aimed to investigate the presence of specific cognitive impairments and the diagnostic utility of the WISC-III in children with ADHD. Ninety-eight children with ADHD and 81 children without ADHD matched by age and gender (control group), between the ages of 6 and 12 years, participated in the study. Children with ADHD revealed the most pronounced deficits in the subtests tapping working memory and processing speed. Freedom from Distractibility was the cognitive profile most impaired and that showed the highest diagnostic accuracy to discriminate children with ADHD. The optimal cutoff scores of the most common WISC-III cognitive profiles revealed greater diagnostic accuracy than the traditional approach of full or partial profiles. Taken together, these results suggested that in the context of a comprehensive psychological assessment, the WISC may provide knowledge about the specific cognitive strengths and weaknesses that characterize this disorder and may be useful in the decision-making process relative to ADHD diagnosis. Self-report delinquency scales have contributed greatly to the contemporary basis of our understanding of juvenile delinquency. Nevertheless, they have not been immune to criticism and further improvement and extensive measurement research is still necessary. The present study examined the psychometric properties of one such measure of self-reported delinquency, the Adapted Self-Report Delinquency Scale (ASRDS). The ASRDS was administered to a Portuguese sample of male youths ( N = 470, 12-20 years of age), subdivided into a forensic sample ( n = 217) and a school sample ( n = 253). The Portuguese version of the ASRDS demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties, in terms of its factor structure, internal consistency, convergent validity, discriminant validity, criterion-related validity, and known-groups validity, thereby justifying its use among this population. Self-Report Delinquency scales have formed the basis of much understanding of juvenile delinquency today, but further improvement and extensive measurement research on self-report measures of crime are needed. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the shorter general delinquency scale version of the classic commonly used Self-Report of Delinquency (SRD) measure created for the original National Youth Survey (NYS) using a sample (N = 412) of male (n = 200) and female (n = 212) at-risk Portuguese youths. The shorter version of the SRD demonstrated satisfactory validity and reliability, namely in terms of its latent one-factor structure, internal consistency, convergent validity, divergent validity, concurrent criterion validity and discriminant groups validity that overall justifies its use among this population. The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is a self-report scale that aims to provide information about psychopathology, personality, and the psychosocial environment of a person, all of which are important constructs for clinical decision-making and diagnostic processes. At the structural and psychometric level, it is regarded as an improvement in relation to other personality assessment inventories (e.g., MMPI-2 and MCMI-III). Since its publication, the PAI has gathered international recognition, and is now considered a useful instrument in clinical, forensic and research contexts. The present study aims to review and summarize the PAI's development, administration, scoring, and interpretation, as well as to discuss its factorial structure and other psychometric properties in different contexts. The adaptation of PAI across cultures, as well as other alternative versions (e.g., PAI-SF, PAS, PAI-A) are also presented and summarized, and their psychometric properties are analyzed. This study aimed to investigate the factor structure and the measurement invariance across gender of the BRIEF2 Parent Form in Portuguese typically developing children. Participants were 700 typically developing children (n = 352 girls and n = 348 boys) aged 6–16 years. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test five competing factor models. Consistent with the BRIEF2 original dimensional structure, the three-factor model demonstrated the most adequate fit to the data. The measurement invariance of the three-factor model across gender was supported (configural, metric, and partial scalar invariance). We aimed to analyze the construct and concurrent validity of the Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVP), Paired Associates Learning (PAL), Reaction Time (RTI), and Spatial Working Memory (SWM) tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB®). Inclusion criteria were checked in a first session. The CANTAB and additional pencil-and-paper tests were administered within 1 week. The participants (aged 69-96 years) were 137 Portuguese adults without neuropsychiatric diagnoses and 37 adults with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease dementia. Comparisons were made between the CANTAB tests and between these tests and the Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT), Verbal Fluency (VF) test, and some Wechsler Memory Scale-III and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III subtests. Most intra-test correlations were stronger than the CANTAB inter-test correlations. Objective: The present study aims to analyze the psychometric characteristics of the TeLPI (Irregular Words Reading Test), a Portuguese premorbid intelligence test, using the Rasch model for dichotomous items. Results: The results reveal an overall adequacy and a good fit of values regarding both items and persons. A high variability of cognitive performance level and a good quality of the measurements were also found. The TeLPI has proved to be a unidimensional measure with reduced DIF effects. Conclusions: The present findings contribute to overcome an important gap in the psychometric validity of this instrument and provide good evidence of the overall psychometric validity of TeLPI results. The Toulouse-Piéron Cancelation Test (TP) is a classic psychometric tool for the assessment of selective/sustained attention, processing speed and visuo-perceptual abilities. It is commonly used in neurological disorders such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer's disease. It encompasses two main indexes: Work-Efficiency (WE) and Dispersion-Index (DI). The aim of this study is to provide normative scores for the TP in a sample of Portuguese healthy adults. The TP was administered to a convenience sample of 357 cognitively-dwelling subjects aged between [45 and 86] years old, following a standard assessment protocol. The normative scores were adjusted for age and education. Education was the main predictor of TP-WE (R2 =.310), whereas the influence of age on this score was lower (R2 =.191). These two variables explained 50.1% of the variance of the results. Regarding TP-DI, education was also the main predictor of the results (R2 =.039), whereas age was responsible for R2 =.011 and together, they explained 5% of the variance of TP-DI. TP performances are strongly influenced by age and education. This is the first study focused on the establishment of normative data after the age of 45 in the Portuguese population, allowing a reliable assessment in both clinical and research contexts. The main objective of this article is to examine the psychometric properties of the defensiveness and validity scales of the Weinberger Adjustment Inventory (WAI) in a sample of young Portuguese adults (N=610, M=21.33 years, SD=3.09) from a university background. Objective: Among cognitive reserve markers, educational attainment is the most widely studied, with several studies establishing a strong association with risk of dementia. However, it has not yet been fully examined in delirium. This study aims to analyse the relationship between educational attainment and delirium. Methods: The study included elderly hospitalised patients admitted (=48 h) into an intermediate care unit (IMCU) of Intensive Care Medicine Service. Exclusion criteria were as follows: Glasgow Coma Scale (total= 11), blindness/deafness, inability to communicate or to speak Portuguese. The European Portuguese Version of the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) was used for delirium assessment. Results: The final sample (n = 157) had a mean age of 78.8 (SD = 7.6) the majority being female (52.2%), married (51.5%) and with low educational level (49%). According to CAM, 21% of the patients had delirium. The delirium group presented the fewest years of education (median 1 vs. 4), with statistical significance (p = 0.003). Delirium was more frequent among male patients [odds ratio (OR) 0.32; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.12-0.86; p = 0.023], as well as those patients with lower education (OR 0.76; 95% CI 0.62-0.95; p = 0.016), and with respiratory disease (OR 3.35; 95% CI 1.20-9.33; p = 0.020), after controlling for age and medication. Conclusion: Similar to previous studies, these findings point to a negative correlation between education and delirium. This study appears as an attempt to contribute to the knowledge about the role of cognitive reserve in risk of delirium, particularly because is the first one that has been carried out in an IMCU, with lower educated elderly patients. Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients carry a greater risk of conversion to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, the International Working Group (IWG) on AD aims to consider some cases of aMCI as symptomatic prodromal AD. The core diagnostic marker of AD is a significant and progressive memory deficit, and the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) was recommended by the IWG to test memory in cases of possible prodromal AD. This study aims to investigate whether the performance on the FCSRT would enhance the ability to predict conversion to AD in an aMCI group. A longitudinal study was conducted on 88 aMCI patients, and neuropsychological tests were analysed on the relative risk of conversion to AD. During follow-up (23.82 months), 33% of the aMCI population converted to AD. Introduction: The Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) is a memory test that controls attention and acquisition, by providing category cues in the learning process. Because it enables an assessment of memory not confounded by normal age-related changes in cognition and a high accuracy on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) evaluation, it has been suggested by the International Working Group on AD. Our aim was to assess the construct related validity of the FCSRT in the AD spectrum disorders.Method: Patients were classified in two groups according to standard criteria: amnestic mild cognitive impairment (n= 100) and AD (n= 70). A matched control group (n= 101) of cognitively healthy subjects was included. The factorial structure of two models and respective construct and diagnostic validities were analyzed.Results: Both models revealed adequate fit values. The appropriated convergent validity and the lack of discriminant validity support the two factors as measuring the same construct (memory ability). The recalls of the FCSRT enabled high classification accuracy and diagnostic validity for both pathological groups.Conclusions: This study represents a novel contribution regarding the adequacy of the FCSRT in terms of construct and diagnostic validities and shows the interest of including both immediate (learning) and delayed (retention) recalls.
