We, the QUARTET Collaboration, propose an experiment to measure the nuclear charge radii of light elements with up to 20 times higher accuracy. These are essential both for understanding nuclear physics at low energies, and for experimental and theoretical applications in simple atomic systems. Such comparisons advance the understanding of bound-state quantum electrodynamics and are useful for searching for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The energy levels of muonic atoms are highly susceptible to nuclear structure, especially to the mean square charge radius. The radii of the lightest nuclei (with the atomic number, Z=1,2) have been determined with high accuracy using laser spectroscopy in muonic atoms, while those of medium mass and above were determined using X-ray spectroscopy with semiconductor detectors. In this communication, we present a new experiment, aiming to obtain precision measurements of the radii of light nuclei 3≤Z≤10 using single-photon energy measurements with cryogenic microcalorimeters; a quantum-sensing technology capable of high efficiency with outstanding resolution for low-energy X-rays.

Nous proposons ici une première étude de la notion de sagesse selon Maître Eckhart, à partir de ses écrits latins, notamment son Commentaire du Livre de la Sagesse (In Sap. n.121, 201‑206, 243 et 272‑274), Les sermons et leçons sur l’Ecclésiastique (In Eccli.), et les sermons latins Sermo die b. Dieu, sa nature, ainsi que le Fils sont désignés par Eckhart comme Sagesse divine (sapientia increata), qui est aussi la source de toute sagesse humaine (sapientia participata). In this paper, we examine what the German works of Meister Eckhart (c. 1260-1328) say about heaven, the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven. We explain how he understands the presence of the Kingdom of God in us. In a style that is fresh and original, Eckhart says that the Kingdom of Heaven is now already within us. It is in the deepest part of us, in the ground of the soul, but man does not discover it immediately. In the first place, he has to prepare himself and to be receptive to the Kingdom of God, to God within himself. He has to make himself «heavenly», through humility, detachment, equanimity and so on. Furthermore, God «flows» inside this person and He pronounce His Word in him. That is how the human being becomes the son of God, how he receives a «kiss» from God, and how the Kingdom of God breaks through in the ground of the soul. And that finally means participating now in the joy and the blessedness of heaven.

Se ofrece aquí una breve introducción y el texto en castellano del sermón alemán 68 del Maestro Eckhart, Scitote, quia prope est regnum Dei (según la numeración de la edición crítica), y el sermón 88, Post dies octo vocatum est nomen eius Iesus, que presentan los principales temas eckhartianos: el encuentro con Dios como fuente de bienaventuranza y plenitud, el ‘ya aquí’ de Dios, la receptividad del ser humano ante Dios, la ecuanimidad y el desprendimiento como condiciones para la unión con Dios.

CADASIL (Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy) is a hereditary small vessel disease caused by mutations in the NOTCH3 gene, characterized by recurrent strokes, cognitive decline, and psychiatric symptoms. This report presents a novel NOTCH3 c.1564 T > A (p.Cys522Ser) mutation associated with early-onset parkinsonism and significant white matter lesions. We describe a patient who presented with early-onset parkinsonism, characterized by bradykinesia and rigidity, alongside extensive white matter lesions observed through neuroimaging. Genetic testing revealed a novel c.1564 T > A (p.Cys522Ser) mutation in the NOTCH3 gene, contributing to the clinical diagnosis of CADASIL. This case underscores the phenotypic variability of CADASIL and the potential for atypical presentations, including parkinsonism. Early identification of genetic mutations can facilitate appropriate management and counseling for affected individuals and their families. Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms underlying the association between NOTCH3 mutations and parkinsonism. Our findings contribute to the understanding of CADASIL, suggesting that clinicians should consider CADASIL in differential diagnoses of early-onset parkinsonism, especially in patients with concurrent white matter lesions.

Irrigation plays a pivotal role in Southern Europe, and its importance is expected to further increase due to rising climatic variability. Concurrently, the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) mandates the safeguarding of water bodies and the implementation of incentive pricing strategies to promote efficient water management. Within this context, Irrigation Scheduling Decision Support Systems (IS-DSS) could contribute to the achievement of these objectives, although there are still obstacles to their adoption due to uncertainties regarding their potential benefits. This paper aims to derive a pricing model that reflects actual water use through the adoption of an IS-DSS. The innovation of this study lies in showing that adopting an IS-DSS to reduce irrigation volumes can potentially lower concession fees in collective irrigation systems. Thus, it contributes to the fulfilment of the WFD’s objectives regarding incentive water pricing. Notably, the tool is evaluated using the case study of a farm located in the Mediterranean region. The results demonstrate the dual benefits of IS-DSS adoption: on the one hand, it helps preserve water resources with a 24% reduction in irrigation volumes; on the other, it decreases irrigation costs by 20% at the farm level and by 9.4% at the irrigation district level. Therefore, the presented study provides insights into the potential of IS-DSS to enhance water pricing policies to promote efficient water management in Southern European agriculture in alignment with the WFD requirements.

Summary Mitochondria have been the focus of extensive research for decades since their dysfunction is linked to more than 150 distinct human disorders. Despite considerable efforts, researchers have only been able to skim the surface of the mitochondrial social complexity and the impact of inter-organelle and inter-organ communication alterations on human health. While some progress has been made in deciphering connections among mitochondria and other cytoplasmic organelles through direct (i.e., contact sites) or indirect (i.e., inter-organelle trafficking) crosstalk, most of these efforts have been restricted to a limited number of proteins involved in specific physiological pathways or disease states. This research bottleneck is further narrowed by our incomplete understanding of the cellular alteration timeline in a specific pathology, which prevents the distinction between a primary organelle dysfunction and the defects occurring due to the disruption of the organelle’s interconnectivity. In this perspective, we will (i) summarize the current knowledge on the mitochondrial crosstalk within cell(s) or tissue(s) in health and disease, with a particular focus on neurodegenerative disorders, (ii) discuss how different large-scale and targeted approaches could be used to characterize the different levels of mitochondrial social complexity, and (iii) consider how investigating the different expression patterns of mitochondrial proteins in different cell types/tissues could represent an important step forward in depicting the distinctive architecture of inter-organelle communication.

A wide spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases has been associated with pathogenic variants in the PNPLA6 (patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 6) gene, including spastic paraplegia type 39, Gordon—Holmes, Boucher—Neuhauser, Oliver—Mc Farlane, and Laurence—Moon syndromes. These syndromes present variable and overlapping clinical symptoms, encompassing cerebellar ataxia, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, chorioretinal dystrophy, spastic paraplegia, muscle wasting, peripheral neuropathy, and cognitive impairment. In the present study, we performed a wide genetic screening in 292 patients presenting with ataxia or spastic paraplegia using a probe-based customized gene panel, covering >200 genes associated with spinocerebellar diseases. Falésias marinhas ativas e praias arenosas são ecossistemas costeiros altamente dinâmicos, portanto, rápida e intensamente afetados por processos erosivos em escalas temporais de curto a longo prazo, conduzindo a impactos irreversíveis nos demais ecossistemas da orla marítima. Conhecer e quantificar os processos envolvidos nessa dinâmica é de fundamental importância para o eficiente gerenciamento costeiro. Este artigo investiga as modificações ocorridas nas linhas de praia do Litoral Oriental do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte nas últimas três décadas (entre 1988 e 2018) e discute os processos costeiros envolvidos, por meio da quantificação de taxas médias e máximas de erosão e acreção na linha de praia, com base no processamento digital de imagens multiespectrais de Sensoriamento Remoto e Sistema de Informações Geográficas. Na avaliação comparativa das mudanças nas linhas de praia considerou os erros e incertezas inerentes à resolução espacial de imagens de sensoriamento remoto, técnicas de georreferenciamento e procedimentos de extração de cada linha de praia nas análises estatísticas utilizando os módulos do Digital Shoreline Analysis System. Os resultados mostram balanço final erosivo para cerca de 45% das linhas de praia nas três últimas décadas. As taxas médias de variação das linhas de praia indicam recuos da ordem de -1,20 m/ano e acreção de 1,71 m/ano. Logo, a magnitude da erosão é expressiva, com trechos assinalando máximos de acreção em 19,5 m/ano e de erosão da ordem de -2,76 m/ano.

The winter squash is an important source of antioxidants, especially carotenoids. The aim of submitted research work was to determine the effect of genotype, storage and different methods of technological processing (baking, boiling and sterilization) on the content of ascorbic acid and total carotenoids in fruits of winter squash (Cucurbita moschata Duch. ex Poir.). The small-plot field experiment was established at Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra in 2013. Five cultivars of winter squash (‘Liscia’, ‘Orange’, ‘Hannah’, ‘UG 205 F1’ and ‘Waltham’) were examined in experiment. The total carotenoids content in the pulp of fresh fruits was ranged from 9.33 to 15.10 mg.100 g−1. Its highest value was determined in case of ‘Orange’ variety. The storage and the thermal treatment of fruit pulp in case of baking had positive impact from the total carotenoid content point of view. The baking resulted in the increase of its value in winter squash. On the contrary, sterilization tended to the decrease of total carotenoid content in edible part of squash. The total carotenoids content in the baking pulp was ranged from 14.27 to 31.87 mg.100 g−1. The vitamin C content before storage and technological processing ranged in interval from 13.88 to 18.69 mg.100 g−1. Particular thermal methods of processing and storage resulted in decrease of vitamin C content in the pulp of all winter squash varieties.

Cloacal swabs from 74 healthy reptiles at Ljubljana Zoo were examined for the presence of salmonellae. Thirty nine reptiles underwent at least one antimicrobial treatment 24 - 48 months before sample collection. The identification of salmonellae was performed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and positive strains were serotyped. Salmonellae were found in 29.7% of all reptiles investigated, in 55.6% of reptiles kept with regularly direct contact with zoo visitors, and in 26.2% of reptiles kept strictly in terraria. The isolation prevalence was 38.6%, 18.2% and 12.5% in snakes, lizards and chelonians, respectively. Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica was the most common (63.6%) followed by subspecies diarizone (31.8%) and subspecies arizonae (4.5%). The serotypes Infantis and Uzaramo were detected in 27.3% and 36.4% of Salmonella positive samples, respectively. Resistance to antimicrobial agents was found in 9% of strains. A high percentage (63.6%) of Salmonella positive reptiles at Ljubljana Zoo shed serotypes that are known to be causative agents of human salmonellosis. This is the first documented isolation of serotype 57:k:e,n,x,z15 from captive reptiles.
