The treatment of municipal wastewater produces clean water and sewage sludge (MSS), the management of which has become a serious problem in Europe. The typical destination of MSS is to spread it on land, but the presence of heavy metals and pollutants raises environmental and health concerns. Bioconversion mediated by larvae of black soldier fly (BSFL) Hermetia illucens (Diptera, Stratiomyidae: Hermetiinae) may be a strategy for managing MSS. The process adds value by generating larvae which contain proteins and lipids that are suitable for feed and/or for industrial or energy applications, and a residue as soil conditioner. MSS from the treatment plant of Ladispoli (Rome province) was mixed with an artificial fly diet at 50% and 75% (fresh weight basis) to feed BSFL. Larval performance, substrate reduction, and the concentrations of 12 metals in the initial and residual substrates and in larval bodies at the end of the experiments were assessed. Larval survival (> 96%) was not affected. Larval weight, larval development, larval protein and lipid content, and waste reduction increased in proportion the increase of the co-substrate (fly diet). The concentration of most of the 12 elements in the residue was reduced and, in the cases of Cu and Zn, the quantities dropped under the Italian national maximum permissible content for fertilizers. The content of metals in mature larvae did not exceed the maximum allowed concentration in raw material for feed for the European Directive. This study contributes to highlight the potential of BSF for MSS recovery and its valorization. The proportion of fly diet in the mixture influenced the process, and the one with the highest co-substrate percentage performed best. Future research using other wastes or by-products as co-substrate of MSS should be explored to determine their suitability.

Aim of study: To evaluate the susceptibility of the Rhynchophorus ferrugineus to electric discharges, to eventually use this application in synergy with other methods as part of an integrated control strategy.Area of study: Worldwide.Material and methods: Three different electric voltage intensities were applied to R. ferrugineus to investigate the insect’s susceptibility in both adult and larval stages. The transmission and diffusion of electricity within a portion of the palm tree was tested. In addition, the suitability of containment materials for handling and transportation of plant residues was tested.Main results: The results of adult test showed that the total number of eggs laid per mating couple and the number of larvae born were about 1.5 times higher in the control compared to the electrified samples. The duration of the electric discharge on larvae had a small impact on the mortality rate, while the electric voltage showed a strong impact on mortality (87% for 10 V and 99% for 15 V). The presence of a significant electric current was observed in a viable portion of stem (distance from the source of electricity 10 cm) providing a direct current with 250 V tension. Among the materials tested for the transportation of palm residues, the aluminium net sheet showed the best results in the containment of both larval and adult individuals.Research highlights: Electrocution has proven to be a system which can help in the control of red palm weevil reducing the use of synthetic chemicals.

This chapter examines how potato germplasm is being used to create insect pest resistant potatoes, with emphasis on Myzus persicae, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, and Phthorimaea operculella. Potato, Solanum tuberosum ssp. tuberosum L., is the fourth most important food crop in terms of production and cash value. Potato germplasm, in the form of true potato seed, tubers, or in vitro plantlets, is held in genebanks throughout the world. Classical breeding strategies have been based on sexual crosses between and within closely related species. The cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum ssp. tuberosum, is a vegetatively propagated autotetraploid species with tetrasomic inheritance and high heterozygosity. This has allowed potato breeders to take advantage of both genetic and somaclonal variation, use precocious in vitro selection techniques, and overcome certain interspecific incompatibilities. Genes from at least 18 exotic potato species have been incorporated into North American and European potato cultivars primarily for stress tolerance or disease resistance.

The red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, recently spreading from its native range throughout the world, is one of the most dangerous pests for several palm species. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a promising environmentally friendly approach for the management of this pest. An essential prerequisite of the SIT is that irradiated males released in nature are as sexually competitive as their wild counterparts. Here we evaluated the potential use of the SIT in red palm weevil males by investigating the sexual competitiveness of gamma-irradiated (Cobalt 60 source, dose 80 Gray) males in the laboratory in a natural-like social context with a balanced sex ratio and by testing their efficacy in impairing female reproduction. Our results showed that irradiation did not affect any of the mating behaviour parameters. However, the male reproductive potential was drastically reduced, as fertility was markedly decreased in females mated with irradiated males. Therefore, an 80 Gray irradiation dose is a promising option for the SIT in the control of the red palm weevil, producing sterile but sexually competitive males when tested in a natural-like mating context.

Balanophyllia europaea (Risso, 1826) is a common scleractinian coral living on subtidal rocky substrates in the Mediterranean Sea. The annual sexual reproductive cycle of this species is studied in specimens from an area near Leghorn (Tuscany, Italy). This study represents the first report of a reproductive cycle in a Mediterranean scleractinian coral. B. europaea is a simultaneous hermaphrodite and brooder. Polyp size at sexual maturity occurs at approximately 3 yr of age (6 to 10 mm maximum oral disc diameter). Observation of hermaphroditic polyps shows several significant differences in the distribution of spermaries and oocytes along the oral-aboral axis. Mean distance of spermaries from the oral pole is less than that of oocytes. Also, large mature spermaries tend to line up towards the mouth, while large mature oocytes tend to line up towards the polyp base. This dif- ferential gamete distribution could result in a barrier to self-fertilization, as it reduces encounters between gametes of the opposite sex produced by the same individual. Testes require 1 yr to reach maturity with a maximum spermary diameter of 500 µm. Oogenesis lasts 2 yr with a maximum oocyte diameter of 1400 µm. Fecundity varies significantly with polyp size. The rate of gonadal development increases significantly during January and February, fertilization takes place in March to June and planulation in August and September. Released larvae have a maximum diameter of 2000 µm. The annual cycle of photoperiod and water temperature appear to coincide with the reproductive cycle in B. europaea.

In the present study we describe the morphology of the male reproductive apparatus and sperm ultrastructure of the red palm weevil - an invasive pest of several palm tree species - as well as the most important steps of spermatogenesis. The reproductive apparatus consists of a pair of testes (each formed by two lobes) a long tube-like accessory gland, a prostate gland and a small accessory gland. Characteristic features of the sperm are 90-100. μm total length, 10. μm nucleus, two mitochondrial derivatives, two accessory bodies, one well-developed puff-like structure and a typical insect 9+9+2 flagellar axoneme. One of the methods used for the biological control of pests is the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), for the evaluation of which we make a preliminary comparison of the sperm ultrastructure of non-irradiated and irradiated weevils (at a dose of 80 Gray). © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

The potato tuber moth (PTM) represents a dangerous pest on potato crop in Italy, spreading out from southern areas to central and northern areas. Introductions ofSolanum berthaultii, S. commersonii, S. pinnatisectum, S. sparsipilum, S. spegazzini, S. sucurense, S. tarijense wild species andS. tuberosum × S. berthaultii hybrids were evaluated for resistance to a PTM population isolated from a field in central Italy, by means of an antibiosis test on tubers in the laboratory and of an antixenosis trial in the field. SeveralS. sparsipilum andS. pinnatisectum clones showed an antibiosis effect on larval survival and antixenosis of the aerial and the hypogeal parts of the plant. In the field, the genotypes with leaf glandular trichomes did not revcal the expected antixenosis effect of the acrial part of the plant.

Four introductions ofSolanum berthaultii wild species and sevenS. tuberosumxS. berthaultii hybrids were evaluated by antibiosis and antixenosis laboratory tests with potato tuber moth. Some morphological and chemical traits related to the trichomes were analysed. Two clones of the wild speciesS. sparsipilum and five ofS. pinnatisectum, characterised by high tuber resistance, were tested for leaf resistance, both by antibiosis and antixenosis assays. The genotypes with high density of trichomes A and with high exudate PPO activity, showed a moderate negative effect on pupal weight and fecundity in the antibiosis tests. Trichomes B exudate showed a strong repulsive effect on oviposition of adult in the antixenosis tests. TheS. pinnatisectum clones revealed a good leaf resistance level, whereas theS. sparsipilum clones showed lower levels of antibiosis and antixenosis.
