As part of their construction of the Khovanov spectrum, Lawson, Lipshitz and Sarkar assigned to each cube in the Burnside category of finite sets and finite correspondences, a finite cellular spectrum. In this paper we extend this assignment to cubes in Burnside categories of infinite sets. This is later applied to the work of Akhmechet, Krushkal and Willis on the quantum annular Khovanov spectrum with an action of a finite cyclic group: we obtain a quantum annular Khovanov spectrum with an action of the infinite cyclic group.

The unknotting number $u$ and the genus $g$ of braid positive knots are equal, as shown by Rudolph. We prove the stronger statement that any positive braid diagram of a genus $g$ knot contains $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. Then, we turn to unknotting the more general class of fibered positive knots, for which $u = g$ was conjectured by Stoimenow. We prove that the known ways to unknot braid positive knots do not generalize to fibered positive knots. Namely, we prove that there are fibered positive knots that cannot be unknotted optimally along fibered positive knots; there are fibered positive knots that do not arise as trefoil plumbings; and there are positive diagrams of fibered positive knots of genus $g$ that do not contain $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. Unoriented SL(3) foams are two-dimensional CW complexes with generic singularities embedded in 3- and 4-manifolds. They naturally come up in the Kronheimer-Mrowka SO(3) gauge theory for 3-orbifolds and, in the oriented case, in a categorification of the Kuperberg bracket quantum invariant. The present paper studies the more technically complicated case of SL(4) foams. Combinatorial evaluation of unoriented SL(4) foams is defined and state spaces for it are studied. Our main result has topological, combinatorial and computational flavor. It is motivated by a fundamental conjecture stating that computing Khovanov homology of a closed braid of fixed number of strands has polynomial time complexity. We show that the independence simplicial complex $I(w)$ associated to the 4-braid diagram $w$ (and therefore its Khovanov spectrum at extreme quantum degree) is contractible or homotopy equivalent to either a sphere, or a wedge of 2 spheres (possibly of different dimensions), or a wedge of 3 spheres (at least two of them of the same dimension), or a wedge of 4 spheres (at least three of them of the same dimension). On the algorithmic side we prove that finding the homotopy type of $I(w)$ can be done in polynomial time with respect to the number of crossings in $w$. In particular, we prove the wedge of spheres conjecture for circle graphs obtained from 4-braid diagrams. We determine the structure of the Khovanov homology groups in homological grading 1 of positive links. More concretely, we show that the first Khovanov homology is supported in a single quantum grading determined by the Seifert genus of the link, where the group is free abelian and of rank determined by the Seifert graph of any of its positive link diagrams. In particular, for a positive link, the first Khovanov homology is vanishing if and only if the link is fibered. Moreover, we extend these results to (p,q)-cables of positive knots whenever $q\geq p$. We also show that several infinite families of Heegaard Floer L-space knots have vanishing first Khovanov homology. We introduce a functor from the cube to the Burnside 2-category and prove that it is equivalent to the Khovanov spectrum given by Lipshitz and Sarkar in the almost-extreme quantum grading. We provide a decomposition of this functor into simplicial complexes. We show that, generically, finding the $k$-th root of a braid is very fast. More precisely, we provide an algorithm which, given a braid $x$ on $n$ strands and canonical length $l$, and an integer $k>1$, computes a $k$-th root of $x$, if it exists, or guarantees that such a root does not exist. The generic-case complexity of this algorithm is $O(l(l+n)n^3\log n)$. The non-generic cases are treated using a previously known algorithm by Sang-Jin Lee., Comment: 15 pages

Given an $m$-periodic link $L\subset S^3$, we show that the Khovanov spectrum $\mathcal{X}_L$ constructed by Lipshitz and Sarkar admits a homology group action. We relate the Borel cohomology of $\mathcal{X}_L$ to the equivariant Khovanov homology of $L$ constructed by the second author. The action of Steenrod algebra on the cohomology of $\mathcal{X}_L$ gives an extra structure of the periodic link. Another consequence of our construction is an alternative proof of the localization formula for Khovanov homology, obtained first by Stoffregen and Zhang. We introduce the notion of partial presimplicial set and construct its geometric realization. We show that any semiadequate diagram yields a partial presimplicial set leading to a geometric realization of the almost-extreme Khovanov homology of the diagram. Based on the presentation of the Kauffman bracket skein module of the torus given by the third author in previous work, Charles D. Frohman and R\u{a}zvan Gelca established a complete description of the multiplicative operation leading to a famous product-to-sum formula. In this paper, we study the multiplicative structure of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the thickened four-holed sphere. We present an algorithm to compute the product of any two elements of the algebra, and give an explicit formula for some families of curves. We surmise that the algorithm has quasi-polynomial growth with respect to the number of crossings of a pair of curves. We prove that the spectrum constructed by Gonz\'alez-Meneses, Manch\'on and the second author is stably homotopy equivalent to the Khovanov spectrum of Lipshitz and Sarkar at its extreme quantum grading.

Braid combing is a procedure defined by Emil Artin to solve the word problem in braid groups for the first time. It is well-known to have exponential complexity. In this paper, we use the theory of straight line programs to give a polynomial algorithm which performs braid combing. This procedure can be applied to braids on surfaces, providing the first algorithm (to our knowledge) which solves the word problem for braid groups on surfaces with boundary in polynomial time and space. In the case of surfaces without boundary, braid combing needs to use a section from the fundamental group of the surface to the braid group. Such a section was shown to exist by Gon\ccalves and Guaschi, who also gave a geometric description. We propose an algebraically simpler section, which we describe explicitly in terms of generators of the braid group, and we show why the above procedure to comb braids in polynomial time does not work in this case.

In the Khovanov homology of links, presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-torsion is a very common phenomenon. Finite number of examples of knots with $\mathbb{Z}_n$-torsion for $n>2$ were also known, none for $n>8$. In this paper, we prove that there are infinite families of links whose Khovanov homology contains $\mathbb{Z}_n$-torsion for $2 < n < 9$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{2^s}$-torsion for $s < 24$. We also introduce $4$-braid links with $\mathbb{Z}_3$-torsion which are counterexamples to the PS braid conjecture. We also provide an infinite family of knots with $\mathbb{Z}_5$-torsion in reduced Khovanov homology and $\mathbb{Z}_3$-torsion in odd Khovanov homology., Comment: 33 pages, 8 figures, and 33 tables

It was proven by Gonz\'alez-Meneses, Manch\'on and Silvero that the extreme Khovanov homology of a link diagram is isomorphic to the reduced (co)homology of the independence simplicial complex obtained from a bipartite circle graph constructed from the diagram. In this paper we conjecture that this simplicial complex is always homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. In particular, its homotopy type, if not contractible, would be a link invariant and it would imply that the extreme Khovanov homology of any link diagram does not contain torsion. We prove the conjecture in many special cases and find it convincing to generalize it to every circle graph (intersection graph of chords in a circle). In particular, we prove it for the families of cactus, outerplanar, permutation and non-nested graphs. Conversely, we also give a method for constructing a permutation graph whose independence simplicial complex is homotopy equivalent to any given finite wedge of spheres. We also present some combinatorial results on the homotopy type of finite simplicial complexes and a theorem generalizing previous results by Csorba, Nagel and Reiner, Jonsson and Barmak. We study the implications of our results to Knot Theory; more precisely, we compute the real-extreme Khovanov homology of torus links $T(3,q)$ and obtain examples of $H$-thick knots whose extreme Khovanov homology groups are separated either by one or two gaps as long as desired., Comment: 40 pages

Strongly quasipositive links are those links which can be seen as closures of positive braids in terms of band generators. In this paper we give a necessary condition for a link with braid index 3 to be strongly quasipositive, by proving that in that case it has positive Conway polynomial (that is, all its coefficients are non-negative). We also show that this result cannot be extended to a higher number of strands, as we provide a strongly quasipositive braid whose closure has non-positive Conway polynomial., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

It is known that alternative links are pseudoalternating. In 1983 Louis Kauffman conjectured that both classes are identical. In this paper we prove that Kauffman Conjecture holds for those links whose first Betti number is at most 2. However, it is not true in general when this value increases, as we also prove by finding two counterexamples: a link and a knot whose first Betti numbers equal 3 and 4, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

Is any positive knot the closure of a positive braid? No. But if we consider positivity in terms of the generators of the braid group due to Birman, Ko and Lee, then the answer is yes. In this paper we prove that the same occurs when considering homogeneity. In the way we prove that the plumbing of two surfaces is a BKL-homogeneous surface if and only if both summands are BKL-homogeneous surfaces, a parallel result to that of Rudolph involving quasipositive surfaces.
