Abstract

In this contribution we present an in vivo reconstruction and volumetric body mass estimate for the mounted skeleton of Mammuthus meridionalis on exhibit at the east bastion of the Spanish Fortress at L’Aquila (Abruzzo, Central Italy). The reconstruction has been obtained starting from a 3D photogrammetric model of the skeleton acquired via a micro-drones and by digitally adding a percentage of soft tissues according to the conditions observed in wild specimens. By applying to the volume the density range proposed in literature for extant proboscideans we obtain an estimate of the body mass in the adult male specimen ranging from 11.3 t to 11.5 t, with average body mass equal to 11.43 t. In addition, we compare the volumetric BM estimate with the BM predictive values obtained by means of traditional regression equations based on long bones linear dimension and shoulder height. The results confirm that the volumetric method is always preferable if sufficiently complete mounted skeletons are available, since application of regression formulas to single bony element can lead to an underestimation or overestimation up to 130%. As a general indication, weight estimates in extinct tetrapods based on single measures and single bones should be totally avoided, especially in groups morphologically and phylogenetically distant from extant reference taxa.

Abstract

We studied some exposures of the Roccacaramanico Conglomerate (RCC), a calcareous-clastic mega-bed intercalated within the Late Messinian–Early Pliocene pelitic succession of the La Queglia and Maiella tectonic units (central Apennines). The outcrops, localized in the overturned limb of a kilometric-scale syncline, show a complex array of fractures, including multiple systems of closely spaced cleavages, joints, and mesoscopic faults, which record the progressive deformation associated with the Late Pliocene thrusting. Due to the extent of the investigated sites and a large amount of data to collect, we applied a multi-methodology survey technique integrating unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies and digital mapping in the field. We reconstructed the 3D digital outcrop model of the RCC in the type area and defined the 3D pattern of fractures and their time–space relationships. The field survey played a pivotal role in determining the various sets of structures, their kinematics, the associated displacements, and relative chronology. The results unveiled the investigated area’s tectonic evolution and provide a deformation model that could be generalized in similar tectonic contexts. Furthermore, the methodology allows for evaluating the reliability of the applied remote survey techniques (i.e., using UAV) compared to those based on the direct measurements of structures using classic devices. Our purpose was to demonstrate that our multi-methodology approach can describe the tectonic evolution of the study area, providing consistent 3D data and using a few ground control points. Finally, we propose two alternative working methods and discuss their different fields of application.

Abstract

Abruzzo is marked by a great geodiversity, a high percentage of mountain areas and a rich fauna and flora, features which led to the establishment of numerous natural parks and reserves throughout the region. Ecomuseums live in close symbiosis with these areas, and ease the fruition of such complex institutions. An example is the Majella National Park, which includes the Ecomuseum of the Western Majella and the Ecomuseum at the Paleolithic site of the Giumentina Valley: the former a district with its own specificities, the latter with a main thematic, ethno-graphic and historical-archaeological focus. This structure promotes a global approach to territories, a variety of educational offers, opening a wide space to research, and a variety of high-quality geo-tourism proposals. Sustainable tourism and a holistic reading of territories are expressed in various thematic projects aimed at protecting biodiversity, restoring and enhancing disused buildings, defining thematic itineraries suitable for a multi-level fruition. Integrated into national and European networks, natural parks and ecomuseums work in partnership with institutions and foundations on a regular base; this entrepreneurship, though, often sided by self-organised bottom-up processes, does not exclude but rather encourages participation in the local communities which, cooperating with institution and regaining a place consciousness, can play a proactive role in self-sustainable development.

Abstract

In the upper Tertiary succession of the Maiella Tectonic Unit (Abruzzo, Italy), coarse calciclastic layers, hereinafter referred to as Roccacaramanico Conglomerate (RCC), were deposited during a short time span which approximates the Miocene-Pliocene boundary. The biostratigraphic characterization of RCC is well constrained by previous studies of foraminifer and nannofossil assemblages. In fact the pelitic interbeds of the RCC are attributed to the Sphaeroidinellopsis spp. Biozone and to the MNN12 Nannofossil Zone belonging to the earliest Pliocene.Previous works referred this conglomerate to Apennine- fed sediment gravity-flows however, in the absence of detailed compositional data and of a regional-scale sedimentological study of the layers, only generic hypotheses on the source-area and on the nature of the event which triggered the RCC deposition, were formulated.Here we present the results of an original investigation on the RCC cropping out within the Maiella Tectonic Unit, in the area delimited westward by the Morrone-Porrara thrust and, towards south-east, by the Molise allochthonous Units.In this area, a fairly continuous RCC horizon, exposed on both limbs of the Maiella anticline, was mapped and logged in detail. Our lithostratigraphic analysis allowed to make hypotheses on depositional mechanisms of RCC and revealed that it consists of several (six to ten) major depositional events producing locally amalgamated pluri- metric clastic layers.Our facies analysis highlighted that previous studies had generally underestimated the overall thickness of the layers and that in the southernmost examined outcrops (Palena, Taranta Peligna and Lama dei Peligni), the RCC is characterized by higher thickness, coarser grain-size, poorer sorting and more pronounced channeling compared to that cropping out in northernmost areas (Roccacaramanico, San Nicolao and San Valentino). The recognition of facies-types characterized by greater proximality in the southern Maiella area, and the overall geometric reconstruction of the depositional architecture of the RCC horizon, suggests that, contrary to what was previously assumed, the major sediment gravity-flows were fed from the south-eastern edge of the basin. This result is also confirmed by the paleocurrent data, testifying northward flowing currents directed SSE-NNW.The compositional analysis of RCC, highlighted an almost totally calcareous composition of the clasts and a poor and scattered siliciclastic fraction, mainly occurring as fine grained matrix. Clasts showing inner platform, bio-constructed margin, ramp, transitional and basinal facies, of different ages, are mixed throughout the layers. Nevertheless, these data allowed us to make inferences on the provenance of the sediment supply and on the stratigraphic successions that were undergoing erosion in the area surrounding the basin, around the Messinian-Pliocene boundary.A quantitative assessment of the RCC volume was finally achieved, taking into account either the thickness values we measured in the field or other obtained from deep well-logs, and applying these thicknesses to a set of restored geological sections crossing the Maiella anticline. Our calculation provides a minimum area extent of ~ 700 km2 and a conservative volume estimates of ~ 7 km3 which allows to effectively apply to the RCC, the definition of “mega-bed”. This highlights its importance as a regional marker horizon of the easternmost Abruzzi succession, an importance that is even more emphasized by its clear stratigraphic position, straddling the Miocene/ Pliocene chrono-stratigraphic boundary.

Abstract

The study of Pleistocene climates and environments on a local and regional scales and the analysis of archaeological settlements are both complementary and dependent on each other. Whether we want to establish a dynamic cartography of the first settlements of Europe, to understand the ways of life of human groups from a technical, cognitive and economic point of view, to observe human adaptations to the environment or to identify the possible effects of glaciations and climatic warming on populations, we need to ensure the physical context of their appearance. As a corollary, in continental areas, it is mainly in the context of archaeological investigations that environmental studies are carried out with maximum resolution. Focusing on the local effects of climate change, instead of being satisfied with global data, is the only solution both for describing the reality of climatic effects on environments and for freeing the knowledge of ancient societies from a certain inertia and poor palaeo-sociological content, which are nevertheless generally accepted because of the scarcity of sites. In this search for any clue, although fragmentary, that could complete the framework of the History of Middle Pleistocene European societies, we carried out fieldworks (archaeological excavations and off-site palaeoenvironmental studies) from 2012 to 2020 at Valle Giumentina (Abbateggio, Abruzzo) in Central Italy. Discovered and briefly excavated in the 1950s, this site with its thick stratigraphic sequence (45 m) and 13 archaeological levels is getting well known. Multidisciplinary studies indicate a setting from MIS 16 to MIS 12, and each of the archaeological levels can be attributed to an isotopic sub-stage. The remains (lithic industries, faunal remains) reveal the territorial organization of human groups beyond typology and technology., L’étude, à l’échelle locale et régionale, des climats et des environnements du Pléistocène et l’analyse des niveaux d’occupations archéologiques sont tout à la fois complémentaires et tributaires l’une de l’autre. Que l’on veuille établir une cartographie dynamique des premiers peuplements de l’Europe, appréhender les modes de vie des groupes humains, tant d’un point de vue technique, cognitif qu’économique, observer les adaptations humaines au milieu et cerner les éventuels effet des glaciations et réchauffements climatiques sur les populations, il convient de s’assurer du contexte physique de leurs apparitions. En corolaire, en milieu continental, c’est surtout dans le cadre des opérations archéologiques que les études environnementales sont réalisées avec une résolution maximale. Se pencher sur les effets locaux des changements climatiques, et ne pas se satisfaire des données globales, est l’unique solution tant pour décrire la réalité des effets climatiques sur les environnements que pour extirper la connaissance des sociétés anciennes d’une certaine inertie et d’une piètre teneur paléo-sociologique, toutefois généralement acceptées en raison de la rareté des gisements. Dans cette recherche de tout indice, certes fragmentaire, mais susceptible de compléter le canevas de l’histoire des sociétés du Pléistocène moyen européen, nous avons entrepris de 2012 à 2020 des travaux de terrain (fouilles archéologiques et études paléoenvironnementales hors-site) à Valle Giumentina (Abbateggio, Abruzzes) en Italie centrale. Découvert et brièvement fouillé dans les années 1950, ce site à la puissante stratigraphie (45 m) et aux 13 niveaux archéologiques devient bien connu. Les études pluridisciplinaires indiquent une mise en place du MIS 16 au MIS 12, et chacun des niveaux archéologiques peut être attribué à un sous-stade isotopique. Les vestiges (industries lithiques, restes fauniques) font part de l’organisation territoriale des groupes humains par-delà la typologie et la technologie.

Majella National Park is located in the central Apennines (Italy), in a vast mountainous area of about 740 km2. Owing to the complex geological history of the Majella Massif and surrounding areas, it features many different landforms. Woodlands rich in water characterize the wide tectonic depression of Caramanico, which separates the rounded gentle profile of the Majella to the east from the impervious steep slope of the Morrone Mt. to the west. Bare pitted highlands, like lunar landforms, characterize the top of the Majella (i.e., Femmina Morta Valley) shaped by flowing ice that long ago covered the higher parts of the massif. Sedimentary structures and fossil content recovered in carbonates attest to a long period of sedimentation in warm, shallow-marine environments, revealing that the Majella and the surrounding carbonate mountains looked, approximately from 140 to 7 Ma, like the present-day Bahamas and Persian Gulf. The Park hosts at least 95 geosites, some of which (22) are well-known in the international literature because of their scientific relevance. In addition, its natural and cultural wealth, deeply fused together with geoheritage, preserves several features of national and world rarity. Therefore, the Park Authority decided to put forward its territory as a candidate to become part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Global Geoparks Network.

Abstract

The untypical ruminants of the Apulia Platform (central and southeastern Italy), originally accommodated in the genus Hoplitomeryx, have been recently revised. The Scontrone (Abruzzo, central Italy) representatives were included in a new genus, Scontromeryx, with the addition of a new species, Scontromeryx mazzai. In contrast, the Gargano ones were left in Hoplitomeryx, but also in this case with the addition of three new species, Hoplitomeryx devosi, H. macpheei, and H. kriegsmani, described on postcranial remains and based on body mass calculations and using a size class scoring technique. The results of the present study show that Scontromeryx is invalid, that S. mazzai is imperfectly defined, and that H. devosi, H. macpheei, and H. kriegsmani from Gargano are based on dubious body mass calculations and size class scoring.

Abstract

In the last ten years the Archaeological Mission of Chieti University in Cyrenaica has investigated, through intensive field surveys and excavations, several contexts of the Cyrenaicanchora. Among the many recorded settlements, Lamluda is the most interesting because of its urban organisation, productivity and location at the intersection of the main road network. Our aim is to present the preliminary data from the mapping, survey and excavation of the site, including the results of the archaeometric analysis and the epigraphic study. Among the copious ceramic finds the Roman coarse wares and amphorae are particularly numerous, dating mainly to the Imperial, Late Roman and Byzantine periods. The pottery illustrates not only the longevity of the settlement, which lasted until the eighth or ninth century AD, but also helps to trace the evolution of agricultural wealth and trade. Through archaeometrical and archaeological research it is possible to identify the main local products and their circulation, as well as the imported or exported amphorae and hypothesise on the nature of their contents.

Abstract

The remains of the largest Hoplitomeryx known to date have been retrieved from the upper Miocene limestones of Scontrone (Abruzzo, central Italy). Hoplitomerycidae derived from small-sized Oligocene Tragulina ruminants. Therefore, this is the first giant insular ruminant ever described. Insular giantism has been notoriously exhibited by other taxa, such as rodents. It is suspected for the largest Cretan deer Candiacervus, if these cervids monophyletically are derived from Dama. This large Hoplitomeryx was a lightly built animal with long, slender limbs. This case shows not only that insular giantism can be attained also on large islands, but confirms that it can be promoted by competitive release and immigrant selection.

Abstract

We carried out a multidisciplinary study on the sedimentary succession of Valle Giumentina, a small intermountain basin located in the Central Apennine. Studied in the 1950s, this 70 m-thick succession, including nine Palaeolithic occupation layers, was con- sidered to be of Rissian and Würmian age. However, recent 40Ar/39Ar geochronological and tephrochronological investigations constrained the sedimentary history of the whole succession to the MIS 15-MIS 12 interval (Villa et al. 2016). Geophysical investigations (Electrical Resistivity Tomography) allow detecting the contact between bedrock and Quaternary infilling of the basin. No master fault was identified along the flank of the basin, suggesting that tectonics played a marginal role in the formation and evolution of the basin. Indeed, the basin sedimentary processes appear to be mainly climate-driven, with the deposition of glacio-fluvial sediments during colder glacial periods of MIS 14 and MIS 12 and alluvial sedimentation and/or pedogenesis processes active during warmer interglacial (MIS 15 and MIS 13) and interstadial phases (during MIS 12). Based on the available chronological data, the capture of the basin by a tributary stream of the San Bartolomeo canyon and its definitive extinction, occurred in MIS 12 glacial; i.e., when the uplift of the Apennine chain induced the reorgani- sation of the regional drainage system and the capture of almost all the lakes hosted in the intermountain basins.

Abstract

Multidisciplinary investigations at Pagliare di Sassa (L'Aquila, central Italy) suggest that the local succession accumulated from the late Early to the early Middle Pleistocene in a lacustrine environment. In the upper part, clastic sediments are part of an alluvial fan prograding into the lake, grading to a braided fluvial system. The pollen record confirms that a significant glacial phase occurred just before the onset of the Jaramillo inversion. These data, coupled with evidence from the nearby but earlier Madonna della Strada sequence, allow reconstruction of part of the environmental evolution of L'Aquila basin before the Jaramillo Subchron. The mammal species of Pagliare di Sassa include Stephanorhinus hundsheimensis, mostly of open environments, already present at Madonna della Strada. The faunal turnover characterizing the Early to Middle Pleistocene transition is indicated by the appearances of taxa typical of the Italian early to middle Galerian faunas, such as Praemegaceros verticornis, together with Megaloceros savini. The occurrence of Mimomys savini together with Microtus ex gr. Microtus hintoni-gregaloides suggests that this assemblage is earlier than the Isernia La Pineta fauna. A flint implement and a fragmentary herbivore femur with impact scars probably linked to human activity give evidence of the human peopling of intramontane basins of the Apennine chain since the early Middle Pleistocene.

Abstract

An explosion set off in a limestone quarry located in the surroundings of Rapino (Chieti, central Italy), in the National Park of the Maiella Massif, exposed a small cave containing a Late Pleistocene fauna and Mousterian tools. Amongst the specimens is a fairly well preserved dorsal portion of a left mandibular corpus with associated M1 and M2 attributable to Macaca. The Grotta degli Orsi Volanti specimen is the very first macaque ever found in Abruzzo, but it also is one of the most recent, and the southern and easternmost known from Italy.

Abstract

In the summer of 2009, four molars and two tusks, of a single individual of Mammuthus meridionalis, (a female, 28–30 year old) were discovered at Campo di Pile (L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Central Italy) in fluvial beach sediments of a depositional unit dated to the late Early Pleistocene. A new fragmentary tusk of a second individual has been recently discovered not far from the former. The morphology and dimensions of the penultimate molariform teeth fall within the range of variation of the Upper Valdarno specimens. The enamel pattern is consistent with that commonly found in M. meridionalis. Moreover, the relative thickness of the layers indicates a less advanced Mammuthus representative. In the L'Aquila Basin, at Madonna della Strada-Scoppito, a complete skeleton of M. meridionalis was found in sediments dating to the pre-Jaramillo Early Pleistocene, while some other isolated remains have been recorded at Rocca Santo Stefano and Colle Mancino. During the early Middle Pleistocene, Mammuthus (? Mammuthus trogontherii) and Palaeoloxodon co-occurred in the faunal assemblage of Pagliare di Sassa. Based on stratigraphic evidence, the Campo di Pile findings seem to be intermediate in age between the Madonna della Strada and the Pagliare di Sassa specimens. Ongoing research on the Campo di Pile site contributes to enhancement of knowledge of the Quaternary fauna and paleoenvironmental evolution of the L'Aquila Basin.

Abstract

Karst speleothems can be used for tectonic and palaeoseismic analyses; in particular, stalagmites can be treated as the records of a natural pendulum. Samples of stalagmites from the “Grotta del Cervo” and the “Grotta a Male” caves (Central Italy) have been dated using 14C and U/Th radiometric methods. The present paper shows the limits and validity of such methods for dating strong earthquakes of the past. In particular, radiometric 14C dating shows that the youngest general stalagmitic collapse observed inside the “Grotta del Cervo” cave must be related to the December 1456 earthquake of Central Italy.

Abstract

A trace element record (Mg, Sr, Ba, Al, Si, P, Y, Zn) covering the ca. 133 ka to ca. 124 ka time interval was acquired from a flowstone core from Tana che Urla Cave (central Italy). It was compared with stable isotope data to investigate the environmental evolution in response to regional and extra-regional climate changes in the period corresponding to the latter part of the Penultimate Deglaciation and the first part of the Last Interglacial (Eemian). Trace element geochemical changes on centennial and millennial time scales responded to changes in hydrological input, variations in the supply and transport of catchment erosion products to the cave, including those linked to intense rainfall events, and to the state of the overlying soil and vegetation. Abrupt increases in precipitation and the progressive development of soil and vegetation occurred at ca. 132 ka, in response to the development of the global deglacial phase. The major changes in trace element composition are coherent with the previous hydrological interpretation of speleothem oxygen stable isotope composition (?18O) as predominantly a rainfall-amount proxy. However, reduced growth rate persisted until ca. 130 ka, suggesting still depressed temperatures. An abrupt event of climatic deterioration, with marked decrease in precipitation and soil degradation, is apparent between ca. 131 and 130 ka. Cool-wet conditions between ca. 132 and 131 ka and the subsequent dry period may represent the local hydrological response to an interval of North Atlantic cooling and ice-rafted-debris (IRD) deposition known as Heinrich event 11 (H11). After 129.6 ka there was a rapid recovery according to all of the studied speleothem properties, indicating the onset of full interglacial conditions. A minor amplitude event of reduced precipitation is recorded within the LIG at ca. 127 ka. The record highlights the growing regional evidence for a complex penultimate deglacial climate involving major reorganization of oceanic and atmospheric patterns.
