Small α-dicarbonyl compounds like succinic acid are found abundantly in the atmosphere, thereby contributing to the formation of secondary organic aerosols through solid or liquid particles and gas-phase molecular clusters. The vibrational spectrum of succinic acid was measured in two different environments to evidence the role of the medium on the geometry adopted by the acid. Different structures were observed. The planar and extended structures of succinic acid were favored in the solid state whereas the non-planar gauche conformer was the predominant form in an argon matrix at 20 K, similar to the gas phase. Aided by quantum chemistry calculations and the non-covalent interactions analysis, we investigated the conformational diversity of succinic acid to understand the factors that govern the stability of the acid. - Abstract
The metathesis reaction has been an important tool in both organic and inorganic synthetic chemistry. More specifically in polymer chemistry, ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), via the formation of an active metal-carbene species (MQCHR), has been widely used. The elucidation of the mechanism for ROMP opened the way for the development of well-defined catalysts, suited to local conditions. In the present study, we employed density functional theory (DFT) to investigate three reaction pathways for the formation of a species capable of activating ROMP. The active species is formed from the [RuCl
2 (PPh3 )2 (pip)] complex in the presence of norbornadiene (NBD) and the carbene source ethyl diazoacetate (EDA). Formation of a hexacoordinated intermediate [RuCl2(PPh3)2(pip)(NBD)] is favored in the first step, with NBD doubly coordinated to the [RuCl2 (PPh3 )2 (pip)] moiety. Analysis of donation (X - Ru) and back-donation (Ru - X) processes in the [RuCl2 (PPh3 )2 (pip)(NBD)] complex shows that piperidine behaves as a s donor, while NBD behaves as a p donor and the PPh3 groups act as p acceptors. The intensity of the orbital component is predominant in relation to the steric component in the complex. Thus, we propose that the reaction occurs through the formation of a hexacoordinated complex, followed by the dissociation of a PPh3 group, thus forming a complex where NBD is doubly coordinated to the metal center. Coordination of EDA leads finally to the catalyst capable of forming the metallocyclobutane intermediate required for the ROMP reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

continents ,COVID-19 ,proportion meta-analysis ,case fatality rate (CFR) - Abstract
The aim of this study is to provide a more accurate representation of COVID-19's CFR by performing meta-analyses by continents and income, and by comparing the result with pooled estimates. We used multiple worldwide data sources on COVID-19 for every country reporting COVID-19 cases. Based on the data, we performed random and fixed meta-analyses for CFR of COVID-19 by continents and income according to each individual calendar date. CFR were estimated based on the different geographical regions and level of income using three models: pooled estimates, fixed- and random-model. In Asia, all three types of CFR initially remained approximately between 2.0% and 3.0%. In the case of pooled estimates and the fixed model results, CFR increased to 4.0%, by then gradually decreasing, while in the case of random-model, CFR remained under 2.0%. Similarly, in Europe, initially the two types of CFR peaked at 9.0% and 10.0%, respectively. The random-model results showed an increase near 5.0%. In high income countries, pooled estimates and fixed-model showed gradually increasing trends with a final pooled estimates and random-model reached about 8.0% and 4.0%, respectively. In middle-income, the pooled estimates and fixed-model have gradually increased reaching up to 4.5%. in low-income countries, CFRs remained similar between 1.5% and 3.0%. Our study emphasizes that COVID-19 CFR is not a fixed or static value. Rather, it is a dynamic estimate that changes with time, population, socioeconomic factors and the mitigatory efforts of individuals countries. This article is protected by copyright. Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text., Objectives: To describe the characteristics and outcomes of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome with or without spontaneous breathing and to investigate whether the effects of spontaneous breathing on outcome depend on acute respiratory distress syndrome severity. Design: Planned secondary analysis of a prospective, observational, multicentre cohort study. Setting: International sample of 459 ICUs from 50 countries. Patients: Patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome and at least 2 days of invasive mechanical ventilation and available data for the mode of mechanical ventilation and respiratory rate for the 2 first days. Interventions: Analysis of patients with and without spontaneous breathing, defined by the mode of mechanical ventilation and by actual respiratory rate compared with set respiratory rate during the first 48 hours of mechanical ventilation. Measurements and Main Results: Spontaneous breathing was present in 67% of patients with mild acute respiratory distress syndrome, 58% of patients with moderate acute respiratory distress syndrome, and 46% of patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. Patients with spontaneous breathing were older and had lower acute respiratory distress syndrome severity, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores, ICU and hospital mortality, and were less likely to be diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome by clinicians. In adjusted analysis, spontaneous breathing during the first 2 days was not associated with an effect on ICU or hospital mortality (33% vs 37%; odds ratio, 1.18 [0.92–1.51]; p = 0.19 and 37% vs 41%; odds ratio, 1.18 [0.93–1.50]; p = 0.196, respectively ). Spontaneous breathing was associated with increased ventilator-free days (13 [0–22] vs 8 [0–20]; p = 0.014) and shorter duration of ICU stay (11 [6–20] vs 12 [7–22]; p = 0.04). Conclusions: Spontaneous breathing is common in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome during the first 48 hours of mechanical ventilation. Spontaneous breathing is not associated with worse outcomes and may hasten liberation from the ventilator and from ICU. Although these results support the use of spontaneous breathing in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome independent of acute respiratory distress syndrome severity, the use of controlled ventilation indicates a bias toward use in patients with higher disease severity. In addition, because the lack of reliable data on inspiratory effort in our study, prospective studies incorporating the magnitude of inspiratory effort and adjusting for all potential severity confounders are required.

Purpose: To investigate age-related differences in outcomes of critically ill patients with sepsis around the world., Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of data from the prospective ICON audit, in which all adult ( >16 years ) patients admitted to participating ICUs between May 8 and 18, 2012, were included, except admissions for routine postoperative observation. For this sub-analysis, the 10,012 patients with completed age data were included. They were divided into five age groups - 80 years. Sepsis was defined as infection plus at least one organ failure., Results: A total of 2963 patients had sepsis, with similar proportions across the age groups (80 = 30.9%). Hospital mortality increased with age and in patients >80 years was almost twice that of patients 70 years was independently associated with increased risk of dying., Conclusions: The odds for death in ICU patients with sepsis increased with age with the maximal rate of increase occurring between the ages of 71 and 77 years. e21143 Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are associated with durable antitumor activity in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), however, selection of the best candidates for this type of therapy is a challenge. PD-L1 expression, the only adequately validated predictive biomarker of response to ICIs, is imperfect, and not completely discriminatory between responders and non-responders. Gene expression profile (GEP) is a promising way to evolve in this field. The objective of this study was to identify a GEP of immune-oncology related genes, predictive of response to ICIs in NSCLC. Methods: This study analyzed two cohorts of advanced NSCLC patients treated with ICIs in any line: a discovery cohort composed of 66 Brazilian patients and a validation cohort composed of 54 Spanish patients. Clinical data were collected from medical records. Total RNA was extracted from FFPE tumor tissue. Gene expression profile (GEP) was assessed using the nCounter PanCancer IO360 panel (NanoString Technologies), which comprises 770 genes involved in the cancer immune response. LASSO regression with Cox proportional hazards approach was used to define the new gene expression signature. Results: In the discovery cohort, median age was 62.5 years (36 - 81 years). Most patients were males (57.6%), stage IV (91.9%), ECOG-PS≤1 (90.7%), smokers/former smokers (83.3%) and had adenocarcinoma histology (67.7%). The majority was treated with ICI in the first-line setting (42.4%) and nivolumab was the most frequently used drug (52.6%). At data cutoff, median follow-up for overall survival (OS - time from ICI initiation to death by any cause) was 27.7 months and for real-world progression-free survival (rwPFS - time from ICI initiation to disease progression as assessed by treating physician) was 28.2 months. The median OS and rwPFS were 17.7 months and 5.6 months, respectively. We identified a 6-gene signature (Lung Tumor Score – LungTS) that discriminate patients at low and high risk for death (median OS: 36.1 vs 15.5 months; p < 0.001) and for disease progression (median rwPFS: 10.1 vs 4.2 months; p < 0.001). Considering the expression of CD274 (PD-L1), the LungTS signature also discriminated two populations regarding OS and rwPFS (p < 0.0001). In the validation cohort, which had clinicopathological characteristics similar to the discovery cohort, the OS for high versus low LungTS was 17.0 months and 9.0 months, respectively (p = 0.004). Patients with high score also showed better rwPFS, although not statistically significant (median 10.0 versus 4.0 months; p = 0.11). Conclusions: Our study identified a novel 6-gene immune-signature predictive of response to ICI in NSCLC.

This paper presents the results of welding tests performed with a 1kW blue laser to determine the power and spot characteristics necessary to be able to perform all the welds required in a battery and battery pack. The results of this study indicate that a minimum of 1,500 Watts with a nominal beam parameter product of 11 mm-mrad is required to interface with a scanner and achieve all of the welds required by this application. Several other key industrial applications are discussed, and the welding performance is characterized for various materials. These results are used to define the optimum laser system parameters to serve a broad range of applications. A new blue laser product architecture is presented that is capable of scaling to multi-kW power levels in order to meet the target performance. The building block for this architecture is a 400-Watt blue laser module. These units can be combined to produce systems of any power level in 400- Watt increments with excellent beam quality. The 1,500-Watt product being developed has a beam parameter product of less than 17 mm-mrad.
