The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) has been proposed as target for deep brain stimulation (DBS) in patients with postural instability and gait disorders due to its involvement in muscle tonus adjustments and control of locomotion. However, it is a deep-seated brainstem nucleus without clear imaging or electrophysiological markers. Some studies suggested that diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) may help guiding electrode placement in the PPN by showing the surrounding fiber bundles, but none have provided a direct histological correlation. We investigated DTI fractional anisotropy (FA) maps from in vivo and in situ post-mortem magnetic resonance images (MRI) compared to histological evaluations for improving PPN targeting in humans. A post-mortem brain was scanned in a clinical 3T MR system in situ. Thereafter, the brain was processed with a special method ideally suited for cytoarchitectonic analyses. Also, nine volunteers had in vivo brain scanning using the same MRI protocol. Images from volunteers were compared to those obtained in the post-mortem study. FA values of the volunteers were obtained from PPN, inferior colliculus, cerebellar crossing fibers and medial lemniscus using histological data and atlas information. FA values in the PPN were significantly lower than in the surrounding white matter region and higher than in areas with predominantly gray matter. In Nissl-stained histologic sections, the PPN extended for more than 10 mm in the rostro-caudal axis being closely attached to the lateral parabrachial nucleus. Our DTI analyses and the spatial correlation with histological findings proposed a location for PPN that matched the position assigned to this nucleus in the literature. Coregistration of neuroimaging and cytoarchitectonic features can add value to help establishing functional architectonics of the PPN and facilitate neurosurgical targeting of this extended nucleus.

4. Ecological responses of three urban watercourse stretches after implementation of one-off recovering interventions: an integrated assessment

Faced with the anthropic activities of urban streams stretches through rectification with concrete, there is a concern about the modifications of the aquatic habitats and consequent ecological damages to the ecosystems. Based on biophilic engineering, there is a great opportunity to idealize and test interventions to revitalize such hampered ecosystems. Hence, we verified the performance of biological and organic factors, after the implementation of one-off interventions in three rivers using biophilic handmade materials and structural elements in their fixation. We carried out the project in urban stretches of concrete bed streams, located in Sorocaba-SP, Southeast of Brazil. In two years, we conducted biweekly in situ and laboratory measurements to characterize the study sites, idealize, scale, implement the projects, and, evaluate the ecological responses of the implementations. We collected sampling in two points: upstream and downstream interventions. We evaluated the performance of the interventions through the analysis of SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) factors and by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). We presented the results through a decision-making matrix for stakeholders, which indicated that our ideas are of low cost and easy to implement. Then, we got the following scenario of SWOT priorities: opportunity (58.55%), strength (24.71%), threat (10.74%), and weakness (6.00%). They demand constant efforts for maintenances and they need adjustments to a better understood by residents and the watershed management. We concluded that the strengths observed in the project turn our idea replicable in any part because it attaches the idea of caring about the environment through biophilic techniques, and the weaknesses are liable to modifications (improvements) in future projects that consider such proposal.

RESUMO Este trabalho relata a nodulação e estabelecimento no viveiro e no campo de mudas de Enterolobium contortisiliquum . O efeito da adição de nitrato na produção da muda foi investigado. As plantas respondem à inoculação, demonstrando a necessidade de inoculação com estirpes previamente selecionadas para esta espécie. A Adição de nitrato, além de ter inibido a nodulação, não contribuiu com um aumento no peso da planta. Após um ano e dois meses, esta espécie apresentou crescimento considerável à nível de campo.

6. Susceptibility of Biomphalaria tenagophila and Biomphalaria glabrata from the same region to two Brazilian strains of Schistosoma mansoni

B. tenagophila snails from Ouro Branco, MG, showed positivity for S. mansoni, with infection rates of 5%, 10%, (SJ strain), and 1% (LE strain) using a pool of miracidia. The mollusks were found to be susceptive from the 3rd generation reared in laboratory onwards. The B. tenagophila (OB, MG) when individually exposed to 10 miracidia, showed infection rate of 2% for LE strain. B. glabrata snails from Gagé, MG, showed a positivity rate of 58% for S. mansoni (LE strain), under experimental conditions. The B. tenagophila from Cabo Frio, RJ and B. glabrata from Belo Horizonte, MG used as a control for SJ strain showed infection rates of 47% - 85% and 36% respectivily. For the LE strain, B. glabrata (BH, MG) used as control showed infection rate of 40% - 75%.

Resumo: A educação médica permanece um desafio para professores, pesquisadores e planejadores de saúde. A sociedade atual, em permanente mudança, requer que profissionais médicos sejam tecnicamente competentes, humanos e capazes de resolver problemas em contextos situacionais diferentes. Tradicionalmente o ensino médico tem valorizado a memorização de fatos, tomando o aluno um recipiente passivo de informação. O aprendizado baseado em problemas (PBL), implementado há 20 anos na Universidade de McMaster, pretende tornar os alunos elementos ativos, independentes e responsáveis por seu próprio aprendizado, capazes de aplicar o conhecimento adquirido em situações práticas. A experiência de ensino se dá em pequenos grupos e o papel básico do professor é de facilitador. O grupo é exposto a um caso clínico e os participantes devem identificar tópicos de aprendizado e buscar informações. Mais do que o conteúdo, o processo de aprendizado é valorizado. Diversas pesquisas têm sido realizadas com o intuito de avaliar os resultados dessa estratégia educacional, hoje bastante difundida. Apesar de ainda não serem conclusivos, os estudos sugerem que PBL é uma experiência válida. A resistência à mudança e outras limitações devem ser consideradas para sua implementação.

- Abstract
This work presents a short review of the current research on the acousto-optic mechanism applied to optical fibers. The role of the piezoelectric element and the acousto-optic modulator in the excitation of flexural and longitudinal acoustic modes in the frequency range up to 1.2 MHz is highlighted. A combination of the finite elements and the transfer matrix methods is used to simulate the interaction of the waves with Bragg and long period gratings. Results show a very good agreement with experimental data. Recent applications such as the writing of gratings under the acoustic excitation and a novel viscometer sensor based on the acousto-optic mechanism are discussed. © 2013 The Author(s).

Background: To determine the alterations in the corneal topography after pars planavitrectomy with the system of 20- and 25-gauge. Methods: A total of 29 patients with vitreous hemorrhage. The first group (17 patients) had to undergo a pars planavitrectomy with the 20-gauge system, whereas the second (12 patients) had the pars planavitrectomy with the 25-gauge system. The corneal topography was analyzed in the pre-operation, in the first, third, and sixth months in the post-operation. Results: the group which underwent the standartvitrectomy registered a statistically significant difference in the keratometric difference (dK) in the first month compared to the pre-operation (p < 0,000), first month with the third month (p < 0,020), first month and sixth month (p < 0,008). In the 25-gauge system group significant statistical alterations did not occur. Conclusion: astigmatism occurs in the first month post vitrectomy standard. 10. Policies of educational inclusion in Chile: Three critical nodes

Having achieved the coverage challenges following compulsory policies and a financing system via demand subsidy conditioned to enrollment and attendance, but faced with the scenario of school segregation, Chile has set itself the goal of advancing towards the right to an inclusive education and of quality. In this article we identify and analyze three critical nodes that affect the possibilities of achieving this goal: a) a tension between the logic of integration and educational inclusion, b) a market-based model that does not consider public values, and c) a new educational architecture, based on the logic of individual accountability, which places the possibility of educational improvement in individual incentive systems tied to the achievement of high performance tests. We discuss the need to address and unlock these nodes through transdisciplinary research.

Esta pesquisa estudou o funcionamento e os arranjos familiares de crianças de uma escola pública da cidade do Recife. A amostra se constituiu de 100 pessoas, sendo 50 adultos (pais ou responsáveis pelas crianças) e 50 crianças de 06 a 11 anos. Foram utilizados como instrumento a Entrevista do Genograma e o Desenho da Família com Estória. Os resultados mostram vários tipos de arranjos familiares entre estas crianças, predominando a família nuclear. Quanto ao funcionamento, a maioria dessas famílias se organiza em torno de mulheres, sendo as figuras masculinas fragilizadas pelo desemprego, uso de álcool ou outras drogas.

12. Impact of cerebral cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers in a general hospital: prognostic factors and outcomes

OBJECTIVE: To assess survival of patients undergoing cerebral cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers and to identify prognostic factors for short-term survival. METHODS: Prospective study with patients undergoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers. RESULTS: The study included 150 patients. Spontaneous circulation was re-established in 88 (58%) patients, and 42 (28%) were discharged from the hospital. The necessary number of patients treated to save 1 life in 12 months was 3.4. The presence of ventricular fibrillation or tachycardia (VF/VT) as the initial rhythm, shorter times of cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers and cardiopulmonary arrest, and greater values of mean blood pressure (BP) prior to cardiopulmonary arrest were independent variables for re-establishment of spontaneous circulation and hospital discharge. The odds ratios for hospital discharge were as follows: 6.1 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.7-13.6), when the initial rhythm was VF/VT; 9.4 (95% CI = 4.1-21.3), when the time of cerebral cardiopulmonary resuscitation was < 15 min; 9.2 (95% CI = 3.9-21.3), when the time of cardiopulmonary arrest was < 20 min; and 5.7 (95% CI = 2.4-13.7), when BP was > 70 mmHg. CONCLUSION: The presence of VF/VT as the initial rhythm, shorter times of cerebral cardiopulmonary resuscitation and of cardiopulmonary arrest, and a greater value of BP prior to cardiopulmonary arrest were independent variables of better prognosis.

OBJETIVO: Estimar o grau de exposição interna aos praguicidas organoclorados (POP) dos moradores de um atêrro a céu aberto. MÉTODOS: Estudo observacional, de aferição simultânea e controlado, cujo fator de estudo foi residir em área contaminada por POP e o efeito foi a concentração sanguínea dessas substâncias. A população de estudo foi de 238 pessoas residentes em um aterro a céu aberto (Pilões), no município de Cubatão, SP; e a população de controle ficou dimensionada em 258 pessoas, também residentes no mesmo município (Cota 200). Foram analisados os praguicidas HCB, p-p'DDT, p-p'DDE, p-p'DDD, o-p'DDT, a HCH; b HCH; g HCH; Aldrin; Dieldrin; Endrin; Heptaclor; Heptaclor-epoxi e Mirex. RESULTADOS: Os teores médios sangüíneos de HCB em Pilões foram de 4,66 µg/L, 155 vezes maior que a média na Cota 200 (0,03 µg/L). Em Pilões, os teores médios de DDT total foram de 3,71 µg/L, duas vezes maior do que na Cota 200 (1,85 µg/L) e o HCH total apresentou concentrações sangüíneas seis vezes maiores em Pilões, 0,84 µg/L, contra 0,13 µg/L. CONCLUSÕES: Evidenciou-se associação positiva entre residir em Pilões e apresentar teores sangüíneos de POP, com risco muitas vezes maior quando comparado a localidades sem a presença desses contaminantes.

Hepatozoon species are the most abundant hemoparasites of snakes. Its identification has been based mainly on the morphologic characterization of the gamonts in the peripheral blood of the vertebrate host and also of the cysts found in the internal organs of the vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. Using a computerized image analysis system, we studied five species of Hepatozoon from recently captured snakes in Botucatu, State of São Paulo, Brazil, to evaluate the importance of the morphology and morphometry of the gamonts for the characterization of Hepatozoon species and to analyze the morphologic changes induced in the erythrocytes by the parasite. The studied species were H. terzii of Boa constrictor amarali, Hepatozoon sp. of Crotalus durissusterrificus, H. philodryasi of Philodryas patagoniensis, and H. migonei and H. cyclagrasi of Hydrodynastes gigas. We observed three different groups, one of them including the species H. terzii, H. philodryasi and Hepatozoon sp. of C. durissus terrificus; and the other two consisting of H. migonei and H. cyclagrasi. Degree of alterations in the erythrocytes was variable and it may be useful for characterization of Hepatozoon species.

Este trabalho consistiu da realização da análise de regressão periódica dos totais mensais de precipitação de oito localidades do Estado do Paraná. Foram derivados modelos matemáticos que descrevem o transcurso desta variável, considerando um período de doze meses. A análise foi desenvolvida através da álgebra matricial e realizada a expansão em série de Fourier de uma função f(t), periódica e definida para o intervalo. Os dados originais foram ajustados para meses de 30 dias, transformados para normalizar a distribuição. Posteriormente foram determinados todos os componentes harmônicos das funções referentes a cada um dos oito locais. Após a verificação da normalidade dos componentes harmônicos, realizou-se a análise de variância, o que permitiu identificar os componentes harmônicos significativos, que foram escolhidos para fazer parte da equação de regressão correspondente a cada local. Estas equações explicaram de 89,56% a 99,60% da variação devida a meses, considerando o conjunto das localidades estudadas. A probabilidade de ocorrência de um ano conforme o modelo, expressa em porcentagem, variou de 14,19% a 68,42%, enquanto a probabilidade de ocorrência de um ano conforme a média variou de 0,02% a 1,87%.

16. Mulheres cuidando de mulheres: um estudo sobre a Casa de Apoio Viva Maria, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

Este trabalho teve como objetivo obter dados a respeito de mulheres vitimizadas que são atendidas em uma casa abrigo governamental denominada "Casa de Apoio Viva Maria", situada na cidade de Porto Alegre. Analisaram-se informações referentes a 110 mulheres que estiveram albergadas na casa durante os últimos dois anos - janeiro de 1996 a junho de 1998. O perfil da clientela mostrou que as mulheres eram jovens - em média, 29 anos; todas de baixa renda; 12% analfabetas, 21% negras, 80% delas com história de violência doméstica freqüente. Além disso, 18% destas mulheres retornaram à relação com o companheiro violento. Foram efetuadas visitas domiciliares a 34 ex-moradoras, convidando-as a participar de uma série de oficinas de avaliação. Um total de 118 pessoas - mães e crianças - integrou os três encontros de avaliação. Durante estes, os pesquisadores estimularam as participantes a expressar suas opiniões, percepções e sentimentos a respeito da experiência vivida na casa abrigo, assim como seus conceitos no tocante à violência. Finalmente, realizou-se um grupo focal com a equipe técnico-administrativa da casa. As trabalhadoras enfatizaram o quanto esse tipo de trabalho tem sido útil para seu desenvolvimento pessoal e auxiliou a modificar suas vidas.

This study presents an automated system for potentiometric determination of free and total cyanide which employs a homogeneous membrane tubular ion-selective electrode. After the electrode is assembled, it is connected to a system composed of 3 three-way solenoid valves, sample line, carrier line, acid stream, and gas diffusion chamber. A Turbo Pascal® computer program, developed specifically for this task, automatically performs all the steps involved in data acquisition and processing. The proposed analytical procedure offers operational simplicity, since detection is performed by a tubular electrode, whose assembly is fast and easy. The system has shown reproducibility (r.s.d. < 0.5%, n=6) and high speed (30 readings/hour); it is efficient for determination of free and total cyanide in waste waters of starch processing plants. The detection limit was 1.2x10-5 and 1.5x10-5 mol L-1, for determination of free and total cyanide, respectively. The linear response range was between 1.2x10-5 and 1.0x10-2 mol L-1 for free cyanide and between 1.5x10-5 and 1.0x10-2 for total cyanide.

Constitui objetivo do presente trabalho a caracterização da prevalência do Diabetes Mellitus Auto-Referido (DMAR) no Município de São Paulo, obtida a partir do inquérito domiciliar realizado pelo Estudo Multicêntrico sobre a Prevalência do Diabetes no Brasil, de 1986 a 1988. A amostra foi composta por 2007 indivíduos de 30 a 69 anos de idade, de ambos os sexos, selecionados em três áreas de distintas condições sociais, nas quais estavam sendo implantados programas assistenciais aos diabéticos. A prevalência, obtida através de glicemia capilar, 2h após sobrecarga de 75 g de glicose, foi de 9,7%. A prevalência do DMAR foi de 4,7%, tendo sido observado aumento de acordo com a idade, e estreita relação com o relato de história familiar de diabetes. The objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium (Apicomplexa, Cryptosporidiidae) in the snake Crotalus durissus terrificus (Serpentes, Viperidae). Fifty animals were evaluated for the presence of oocysts of Cryptosporidium sp. at the time of arrival and 30 and 60 days later. Intestinal washings with saline solution (1% body weight), fecal samples, and organ scrapings were collected during the study. Oocysts were concentrated by an ether-phosphate-buffered saline sedimentation technique and then separated by a density gradient centrifugation technique. Smears were made with the sediment and submitted to modified acid-fast and auramine-rhodamine staining. Cryptosporidium-positive smears were used as controls for the experimental findings. The overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts was 14%. Among the positive snakes, oocysts were detected only in the intestinal washing in two specimens, only in the feces in four specimens, and in both materials at least once in one specimen. The positive snakes were predominantly from Santa Maria da Serra city State of São Paulo (57.1%). We also observed that all of the examinations that presented positive results were obtained at least 27 days after the capture of the animals.

Foi realizado estudo em 6 bairros do Município de Cubatão, SP, Brasil, situados às margens dos principais rios do município, com uma amostragem de 251 crianças de 1 a 10 anos de idade. Foram verificadas as concentrações sangüíneas de praguicidas organoclorados em 242 crianças, sendo que 73 crianças (30%) apresentaram concentrações de p-p'DDE (média = 0,85 ± 2,13 µg/l.), e em 47 crianças (19%) foi encontrado HCH total (média = 0,28 ± 0,79 µg/l.). Verificou-se também a concentração sangüínea de chumbo e mercúrio, sendo que se obteve a plumbemia média de 17,8 ± 5,8 µg/dl. e concentração média de mercúrio de 9,1 ± 6,4 µg/l. Crianças consumidoras de organismos aquáticos de origem exclusiva dos rios de Cubatão apresentaram teores médios de mercúrio (média = 14,7 ±7,1 µg/l.) significativamente maiores (p < 0,04) em comparação às crianças não consumidoras de organismos aquáticos de qualquer origem (média = 10,0 ± 6,5 µg/l.).

Abstract Background Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is an economically important and highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed domestic and wild animals. Virus isolation and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are the gold standard tests for diagnosis of FMD. As these methods are time consuming, assays based on viral nucleic acid amplification have been developed. Results A previously described real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay with high sensitivity and specificity under laboratorial and experimental conditions was used in the current study. To verify the applicability of this assay under field conditions in Brazil, 460 oral swabs from cattle were collected in areas free of FMD (n = 200) and from areas with outbreaks of FMD (n = 260). Three samples from areas with outbreaks of FMD were positive by real-time RT-PCR, and 2 of those samples were positive by virus isolation and ELISA. Four other samples were considered inconclusive by real-time RT-PCR (threshold cycle [Ct] > 40); whereas all 200 samples from an area free of FMD were real-time RT-PCR negative. Conclusion real-time RT-PCR is a powerful technique for reliable detection of FMDV in a fraction of the time required for virus isolation and ELISA. However, it is noteworthy that lack of infrastructure in certain areas with high risk of FMD may be a limiting factor for using real-time RT-PCR as a routine diagnostic tool.

Histopathological studies in Alzheimer's disease (AD) suggest severe and region-specific neurodegeneration of the basal forebrain cholinergic system (BFCS). Here, we studied the between-center reliability and diagnostic accuracy of MRI-based BFCS volumetry in a large multicenter data set, including participants with prodromal (n = 41) or clinically manifest AD (n = 134) and 148 cognitively healthy controls. Atrophy was determined using voxel-based and region-of-interest based analyses of high-dimensionally normalized MRI scans using a newly created map of the BFCS based on postmortem in cranio MRI and histology. The AD group showed significant volume reductions of all subregions of the BFCS, which were most pronounced in the posterior nucleus basalis Meynert (NbM). The mild cognitive impairment-AD group showed pronounced volume reductions in the posterior NbM, but preserved volumes of anterior-medial regions. Diagnostic accuracy of posterior NbM volume was superior to hippocampus volume in both groups, despite higher multicenter variability of the BFCS measurements. The data of our study suggest that BFCS morphometry may provide an emerging biomarker in AD.

A blue-emitting phosphor designed by lanthanum (III) coordinated with two 1,10-Phenanthroline and three nitrate ligands, [La(Phen)
2 (NO3 )3 ], was obtained by an effective and simple precipitation method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) revealed the coordination modes in the compound and the chemical structure, crystallizing in a monoclinic system in the C2/c space group. The luminescence properties, absolute quantum yield (ϕ), and luminescence lifetime decay (τ) were determined by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Under a 350 nm excitation, the sample presents three emission bands corresponding to the π* → π transitions belonging to the organic ligand. The luminescence lifetime (τ) was determined through a monoexponentially fit, obtaining a value of 5616 ns. The [La(Phen)2 (NO3 )3 ] complex exhibits an absolute quantum yield of 3 % with the same excitation conditions. In addition, the photometric analysis shows that the luminescent response to a 350 nm excitation is that of a blue-emitting high-purity phosphor with 96 % and chromatic coordinates of 0.15, 0.05. 27. Molecular e serological detection of Leishmania infantum (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae) in domestic dogs in Manaus city, Amazonas, Brazil.

Leishmaniasis are zoonosis widely spread in Brazil, caused by the protozoan of the genus Leishmania, which includes several species. The disease manifests itself in the visceral or tegumentary form, and the main reservoir is the dogs. Manaus is the largest city in the Brazilian Amazon region, and despite the importance of the municipality, practically nothing is known about leishmaniosis in humans and animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and risk factors associated with the presence of Leishmania infantum in domiciliated dogs from Manaus. Molecular (polymerase chain reaction) and serological (immunofluorescent antibody test) methods were used as an indication of the circulation of the parasite. Blood samples for 154 domiciled dogs were obtained, and prevalence ratio and analysis of the variables were performed. Serum antibodies anti-Leishmania spp. were detected in 20.8% (95% CI: 14.4%-27.2%). Access to the street and zone of residence (P < 0.01) were associated with higher seropositivity. Molecular diagnosis for L. infantum detected positivity in 60 (39%) of the 154 (95% CI: 31.3%-46.7%) animals, and the variables street access, contact with dogs, and zone of residence were associated with higher frequencies of positivity (P < 0.05). Both serology and molecular diagnosis detected positive dogs in the municipality. This is the first description of the circulation of L. infantum infecting dogs in Manaus. As the municipality is classified as nonendemic, studies of isolation and characterization of the isolate must be done urgently., (© The Author(s) 2024. Background: Tools for assessing a country's capacity in the face of public health emergencies must be reviewed, as they were not predictive of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social cohesion and risk communication, which are related to trust in government and trust in others, may have influenced adherence to government measures and mortality rates due to COVID-19., Objective: To analyse the association between indicators of social cohesion and risk communication and COVID-19 outcomes in 213 countries., Results: Social cohesion and risk communication, in their dimensions (public trust in politicians, trust in others, social safety nets, and equal distribution of resources index), were associated with lower excess mortality due to COVID-19. The number of COVID-19-related disorder events and government transparency were associated with higher excess mortality due to COVID-19. The lower the percentage of unemployed people, the higher the excess mortality due to COVID-19. Most of the social cohesion and risk communication variables were associated with better vaccination indicators, except for social capital and engaged society, which had no statistically significant association. The greater the gender equality, the better the vaccination indicators, such as the number of people who received all doses., Conclusion: Public trust in politicians, trust in others, equal distribution of resources and government that cares about the most vulnerable, starting with the implementation of programs, such as cash transfers and combating food insecurity, were factors that reduced the excess mortality due to COVID-19. Countries, especially those with limited resources and marked by social, economic, and health inequalities, must invest in strengthening social cohesion and risk communication, which are robust strategies to better cope with future pandemics., (© 2024. The absence of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes negatively impacts the response to chemotherapy and prognosis in all subtypes of breast cancer. Therapies that stimulate a proinflammatory environment may help improve the response to standard treatments and also to immunotherapies such as checkpoint inhibitors. Newcastle disease virus (NDV) shows oncolytic activity, as well as immune modulating potential, in the treatment of breast cancer in vitro and in vivo; however, its potential to enhance tumor-infiltrating immune cells in breast cancer has yet to be evaluated. Since spontaneous canine mammary tumors represent a translational model of human breast cancer, we conducted this proof-of-concept study, which could provide a rationale for further investigating NDV-MLS as immunotherapy for mammary cancer. Six female companion dogs with spontaneous mammary cancer received a single intravenous and intratumoral injection of oncolytic NDV-MLS. Immune cell infiltrates were evaluated by histology and immunohistochemistry in the stromal, intratumoral, and peritumoral compartments on day 6 after viral administration. Increasing numbers of immune cells were documented post-viral treatment, mainly in the peritumoral compartment, where plasma cells and CD3+ and CD3-/CD79- lymphocytes predominated. Viral administration was well tolerated, with no significant adverse events. These findings support additional research on the use of NDV-MLS immunotherapy for mammary cancer.

30. All-fiber broadband spectral acousto-optic modulation of a tubular-lattice hollow-core optical fiber.

- Abstract
We demonstrate a broadband acousto-optic notch filter based on a tubular-lattice hollow-core fiber for the first time to our knowledge. The guided optical modes are modulated by acoustically induced dynamic long-period gratings along the fiber. The device is fabricated employing a short interaction length (7.7 cm) and low drive voltages (10 V). Modulated spectral bands with 20 nm half-width and maximum depths greater than 60% are achieved. The resonant notch wavelength is tuned from 743 to 1355 nm (612 nm span) by changing the frequency of the electrical signal. The results indicate a broader tuning range compared to previous studies using standard and hollow-core fibers. It further reveals unique properties for reconfigurable spectral filters and fiber lasers, pointing to the fast switching and highly efficient modulation of all-fiber photonic devices.

31. National governance and excess mortality due to COVID-19 in 213 countries: a retrospective analysis and perspectives on future pandemics.

Background: National governance may have influenced the response of institutions to the Covid-19 pandemic, being a key factor in preparing for the next pandemics. The objective was to analyze the association between excess mortality due to COVID-19 (daily and cumulative per 100 thousand people) and national governance indicators in 213 countries., Method: Multiple linear regression models using secondary data from large international datasets that are in the public domain were performed. Governance indicators corresponded to six dimensions: (i) Voice and Accountability; (ii) Political Stability and Absence of Violence/Terrorism; (iii) Government Effectiveness; (iv) Regulatory Quality; (v) Rule of Law and (vi) Control of Corruption. The statistical analysis consisted of adjusting a multiple linear regression model. Excess mortality due to COVID-19 was adjusted for potential confounding factors (demographic, environmental, health, economic, and ethnic variables)., Results: The indicators Control of Corruption, Government Effectiveness, Regulatory Quality and Rule of Law had a significant inverse association (p < 0.0001) with the estimated excess mortality in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Furthermore, the governance indicators had a direct significant association (p < 0.0001) with the vaccination variables (People_fully_vaccinated; Delivered population; The total number of vaccination doses administered per 100 people at the country level), except for the variables Vaccination policies and Administration of first dose, which were inversely associated. In countries with better governance, COVID-19 vaccination was initiated earlier., Conclusion: Better national governance indicators were associated with lower excess mortality due to COVID-19 and faster administration of the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine., (© 2023. Background Aims: Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) are a class of biological products for human use that are based on gene, tissues or cells. ATMPs have peculiar characteristics when compared with traditional medicines. In this regard, long-term safety and efficacy follow-up systems of individuals treated with ATMPs have become necessary and may present unique challenges, because unlike conventional drugs and biologics, these products can exert their effects for years after administration. This work seeks to assess the requirements foreseen in the regulatory frameworks for the post-marketing authorization safety and efficacy surveillance for ATMPs in Brazil, European Union (EU), Japan and United States, which are some of the members of the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use., Methods: We reviewed the scientific literature and official documents of regulatory agencies (RAs) in Brazil, the EU, Japan and the United States., Results and Conclusions: RAs in the EU, US and Japan have developed regulatory guidelines for the post-marketing surveillance of ATMPs. These guidelines aim at implementing surveillance plans for monitoring adverse events, including late ones, after marketing authorization. - Abstract
The aim of this work was to determine endometrial mRNA expression and uterine protein localization of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 during the estrous cycle and peri-implantation period in sows. Uterine tissues were collected from pregnant sows on days 12, 14, 16, and 18 after artificial insemination and from non-pregnant animals on days 2 and 12 of the estrous cycle (day 0 = day of estrus). Using immunohistochemistry, a positive signal for VEGF and its receptor VEGFR2 was found in uterine luminal epithelial cells, endometrial glands, stroma, blood vessels, and myometrium. A VEGFR1 signal was only found in endometrial and myometrial blood vessels and stroma. By day 18 of gestation, the mRNA expression levels of VEGF, VEGFR1, and VEGFR2 were higher than those observed on days 2 and 12 of the estrous cycle and on days 12, 14, and 16 of gestation. Then, a primary culture of sow endometrial epithelial cells was established to define the potential of the selective inhibition of VEGFR2 after treatment with inhibitor SU5416 and determine its effects on the expression pattern of the VEGF system. The endometrial epithelial cells treated with SU5416 showed a dose-dependent decrease in VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 mRNA expression. Uncontrolled studies suggest that intralesional MA (IL-MA) may be noninferior and safer than systemic MA (S-MA)., Methods: Multicenter, randomized, controlled, open-label, phase 3 clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of IL-MA in 3 infiltrations at 14-day intervals compared with S-MA (10-20 mg Sb5+/kg/day, 20 days) for CL, with noninferiority margin of 20%. Primary and secondary outcomes were definitive cure at day 180 and epithelialization rate at day 90 of treatment, respectively. A 2-year follow-up was performed to assess relapses and emergence of mucosal lesions. Adverse events (AEs) were monitored according to the Division of AIDS AE grading system., Results: We evaluated 135 patients. The cure rates (95% confidence interval) for IL-MA and S-MA treatment were, respectively, 82.8% (70.5-91.4) and 67.8% (53.3-78.3) per protocol (PP) and 70.6% (58.3-81.0) and 59.7% (47.0-71.5) per intention to treat (ITT). The epithelialization rates of the IL-MA and S-MA treatment were, respectively, 79.3% (66.6-88 + 8) and 71.2% (57.9-82.2) PP and 69.1% (55.2-78.5) and 64.2% (50.0-74.2) ITT. AEs in the IL-MA and S-MA groups were, respectively, clinical, 45.6% and 80.6%; laboratory, 26.5% and 73.1%; and electrocardiogram, 8.8% and 25.4%. - Abstract
Hashimoto thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease characterized by hypothyroidism and a high level of anti-thyroid autoantibodies. It has shown to negatively impact female fertility; however, the mechanisms are unclear. Ovarian follicular fluid appears to be the key to understanding how Hashimoto thyroiditis affecst fertility. Thus, we aimed to evaluated the metabolic profile of follicular fluid and antithyroid autoantibody levels in the context of Hashimoto thyroiditis. We collected follicular fluid from 61 patients, namely 38 women with thyroid autoantibody positivity and 23 women as negative controls, undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment. Follicular fluid samples were analyzed using metabolomics, and thyroid autoantibodies were measured. Fifteen metabolites with higher concentrations in the follicular fluid samples from Hashimoto thyroiditis were identified, comprising five possible affected pathways: the glycerophospholipid, arachidonic acid, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and sphingolipid metabolism pathways. These pathways are known to regulate ovarian functions. In addition, antithyroglobulin antibody concentrations in both serum and follicular fluid were more than tenfold higher in women with Hashimoto thyroiditis than in controls. Our data showed that the metabolic profile of follicular fluid is altered in women with Hashimoto thyroiditis, suggesting a potential mechanistic explanation for the association of this disease with female infertility., (© 2023. Inflammasomes are multiprotein complexes that play a role in the processing of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β). The secretion of IL-1β in bovine macrophages infected with the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) cytopathic strain NADL (NADLcp-BVDV) is caspase 1-dependent. In the present study, we found that in macrophages infected with NADL, the NLRP3 inflammasome participated in the maturation of IL-1β as the level decreased from 4629.3 pg/mL to 897.0 pg/mL after treatment with cytokine release inhibitory drug 3 (CRID3). Furthermore, NLRP3 activation has implications regarding viral replication, as there was a decrease in the viral titer until 1 log of a supernatant of macrophages that were inhibited with CRID3 remained. In the case of the non-cytopathic BVDV strain NY-1 (NY-1 ncpBVDV), IL-1β secretion is not affected by NLRP3, but could be related to the IFI16 inflammasome; we found a colocalization of IFI16 with ASC using confocal microscopy in infected macrophages with the NY-1 ncp-BVDV biotype. To relate IFI16 activation to IL-1β release, we used ODN TTAGGG (A151), a competitive inhibitor of IFI16; the results show a decrease in its level from 248 pg/mL to 128.3 pg/mL. Additionally, we evaluated the caspase 1 activation downstream of IFI16 and found a decrease in the IL-1β from 252.9 pg/mL to 63.5 pg/mL when caspase 1 was inhibited with Y-VAD. Background: ( E , E )-farnesol is a sesquiterpene alcohol derived from plants and animals that exhibits pharmacological properties in the cardiovascular system. However, its effects on human umbilical vessels remain unknown., Purpose: Thus, this study aims to characterize the vasodilatory effect of ( E , E )-farnesol in human umbilical arteries (HUA)., Study Design: The tissue is obtained from pregnant women over 18 years of age, normotensive, and without prepartum complications. After collected, the tissue was segmented and dissected to remove Wharton's jelly and obtain the umbilical arteries segments., Methods: HUA segments were isolated and sectioned into rings that were subjected to isometric tension recordings in an organ bath., Results: ( E , E )-farnesol (1 μmol/L to 1 mmol/L) promoted vasodilatory effect in HUA preparations, affecting basal tone, and inhibiting the electromechanical coupling induced by KCl 60 mmol/L with greater potency (EC
50 225.3 μmol/L) than the pharmacomechanical coupling induced by 5-HT 10 μmol/L (EC50 363.5 μmol/L). In the absence of extracellular calcium, pharmacomechanical coupling was also abolished, and contractions induced by CaCl2 or BaCl2 were attenuated by ( E , E )-farnesol indicating a possible direct inhibition of L-type VOCC as a mechanism of the vasodilatory effect. - Abstract
Controlling systemic proinflammatory and prooxidant effectors is essential for mitigating cardiovascular risk and mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, monitoring these processes is still challenging due to the high uncertainty about their determinants and predictors. Thus, we investigated the relationship between advanced glycosylation end products (AGE), proinflammatory and prooxidant effectors in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). In addition to nutritional profile and dialysis efficiency, AGE, cytokines, chemokines, C-reactive protein (CRP), total (TAC) and non-protein (npAC) antioxidant capacity, lipid and protein oxidation were analyzed in blood samples from 43 HD patients. AGE, CRP, cytokines, chemokines, protein carbonyl (PCn), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were upregulated, while TAC and npAC were down-regulated in HD patients compared to heath subjects. Dialysis efficiency, TAC and npAC were reduced, while leucocytes counting, pre- and post-HD urea, TNF, IL-6, IL-10, CCL-2, MIP-1β, PCn, and MDA were increased in patients with higher AGE accumulation compared to those with lower AGE levels. Serum levels of CRP, protein carbonyl, malondialdehyde, and all cytokines and chemokines analyzed were correlated with AGE circulating levels for patients with higher AGE accumulation. AGE was inversely correlated with IL-10, TAC and npAC in patients with higher AGE accumulation. AGE exhibited predictive value (determination coefficient) to explain CRP, cytokines, chemokines, PCN, MDA, TAC and npAC variability in patients with higher AGE levels. Taken together, our findings provide evidence that AGE accumulation is associated with important proinflammatory and prooxidant effectors in patients with ESRD undergoing hemodialysis. - Abstract
The aim of this study was molecular identification of bovine leukemia virus and possible co-infection with bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) viral agents in Mexican dairy herds. We collected 533 blood samples from cattle vaccinated against the BRDC virus in 9 states across Mexico. Peripheral blood leukocytes were removed and genetic material was extracted to detect bovine leukemia virus (BLV), bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), bovine parainfluenza virus 3 (BPIV-3), and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) infection using polymerase chain reaction. We identified high BLV infection rates in 270 cattle (50.65%). One hundred and thirty-three cows (24.95%) tested positive for BoHV-1, of which 65 samples were positive for both viruses (BoHV-1 and BLV) and 68 were only positive for BoHV-1. Only 4 samples tested positive for BPIV-3 and no sample was positive for BVDV or BRSV. Background: Treatment guidance for children and older adult patients affected by cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is unclear due to limited representation of these groups in clinical trials., Methods: We conducted a collaborative retrospective study to describe the effectiveness and safety of antileishmanial treatments in children ≤ 10 and adults ≥ 60 years of age, treated between 2014 and 2018 in ten CL referral centers in Latin America., Results: 2,037 clinical records were assessed for eligibility. Of them, the main reason for non-inclusion was lack of data on treatment follow-up and therapeutic response (182/242, 75% of children and 179/468, 38% of adults). Data on 1,325 eligible CL patients (736 children and 589 older adults) were analyzed. In both age groups, disease presentation was mild, with a median number of lesions of one (IQR: 1-2) and median lesion diameter of less than 3 cm. Less than 50% of the patients had data for two or more follow-up visits post-treatment (being only 28% in pediatric patients). Systemic antimonials were the most common monotherapy regimen in both age groups (590/736, 80.2% of children and 308/589, 52.3% of older adults) with overall cure rates of 54.6% (95% CI: 50.5-58.6%) and 68.2% (95% CI: 62.6-73.4%), respectively. Other treatments used include miltefosine, amphotericin B, intralesional antimonials, and pentamidine. Adverse reactions related to the main treatment were experienced in 11.9% (86/722) of children versus 38.4% (206/537) of older adults. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) are globally distributed retroviruses that infect domestic cats and cause various syndromes that can lead to death. The aim of this study was to detect and genotype feline retroviruses in Mexican domestic cats. We used PCR assays to identify proviral DNA and viral RNA in 50 domestic cats with different clinical signs and hematological alterations. Endogenous FeLV (enFeLV) was identified in the genomic DNA of all cats in the study, and we detected transcripts of the LTR region of enFeLV in 48 individuals. Exogenous FeLV (exFeLV) was found in 13 cats. Furthermore, we detected FIV proviral DNA in 10 cats. The enFeLV sequences were shown to be the most variable, while the exFeLV sequences were highly conserved and related to previously reported subgroup A sequences. An Ugi-Zhu three-component reaction (UZ-3CR) coupled in one pot manner to a cascade process ( N -acylation/aza Diels-Alder cycloaddition/decarboxylation/dehydration) was performed to synthesize a series of bis-furyl-pyrrolo[3,4- b ]pyridin-5-ones in 45 to 82% overall yields using ytterbium triflate as a catalyst, toluene as a solvent, and microwaves as a heat source. The synthesized molecules were evaluated in vitro against human SARS-CoV-2 through a time-of-addition approach, finding that compound 1e, at a concentration of 10.0 μM, exhibited a significant reduction at the initial infection stages, thus showing prophylactic potential. On the other hand, it was found that compound 1d, at the same concentration, was significantly active when applied post-infection, thus exhibiting a therapeutic profile. Moreover, compound 1f showed both, prophylactic and therapeutic activity. Then, to understand interactions between synthesized compounds and the main proteins related to the virus, docking studies were performed on spike-glycoprotein, main-protease, and Nsp3 protein, finding moderate to strong binding energies, matching accurately with the in vitro results. Background Aims: Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) are a class of biological products for human use that are based on genes, cells and tissues. The first ATMP received marketing authorization in Europe in 2009, whereas Brazil granted the first authorization in 2020. The objective of this study was to compare the regulatory models adopted by Brazil, the USA, Japan and the European Union, which comprise the member countries of the International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use, with regard to the marketing authorization of ATMPs., Methods: The authors performed a review of the scientific literature and official documents of the regulatory agencies in the aforementioned countries., Results: The legislation and regulatory guidelines adopted by the regulatory agencies exhibit similarities and differences. It was not possible to assess whether these differences can be translated into divergent final recommendations by regulatory authorities upon a request for marketing authorization., Conclusions: In the future, it will be appropriate to start a progressive process of harmonization between these agencies in terms of terminology, legal recommendations and characterization requirements. This is particularly important for emerging countries such as Brazil. 45. Relationship between time-dependent variability in cardiometabolic risk factors and biochemical markers with cytokine and adipokine levels in hemodialysis patients.

Hemodialysis patients (HP) are exposed to malnutrition, cardiometabolic and pro-inflammatory risk factors. However, limited knowledge of the variability of these risk factors remains a serious barrier to the proper clinical management of HP. From a longitudinal study, we investigated the relationship between time-dependent variability in cardiometabolic risk factors and biochemical markers with cytokine and adipokine circulating levels in HP. Thirty-eight HP (women = 15, men = 23) aged 54.13 ± 16.78 years old underwent three independent anthropometric, nutritional, biochemical and immunological assessments (1, 6 and 12 months). Patient's characteristics (body mass, comorbidities, history of kidney disease and time on hemodialysis) were similar after sex stratification. From grouped data, 31.6-100.0% HP exhibited multiple malnutrition and cardiometabolic risk factors in all time-points evaluated. All anthropometric and nutritional results, and most biochemical markers were similar in 1, 6 and 12 months follow-up, indicating a marked time-dependent stability. Urea, creatinine, total proteins, albumin, adipokines (adiponectin, leptin and resistin) and cytokines (TNF, IL-6 and IL-10) levels were highly variable in 12 months follow-up. Direct correlations between leptin and fat mass, TNF and IL-6 with creatinine and pre-dialysis urea were observed in all time-points (1, 6 and 12 months). Creatinine and pre-dialysis urea were negatively correlated with IL-10 for the entire follow-up. Fat mass, creatinine and pre-dialysis urea were predictive markers of leptin, TNF, IL-6 and IL-10 variability. Our findings indicated that biochemical, nutritional and cardiovascular risk factors exhibit low time-dependent variability in HP under clinical and nutritional monitoring. However, adipokines and cytokines are highly variables, which can potentially be influenced by body adiposity, creatinine and urea clearance. Species of the genus Leishmania parasitize mammals and have life cycles that alternate between vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. Most species develop in a hematophagous arthropod and infect a specific vertebrate host that may belong to diverse orders and families. Visceral leishmaniasis is a chronic zoonosis with a wide geographic distribution, affecting 350 million people globally, mostly in areas with a high risk of infection. In Brazil, this disease not only has a high incidence but is also expanding to new areas, both in urban centers and rural areas, including territories with tribal communities, due to increasing human intervention. The objective of this study was to perform cathepsin L-like gene-based molecular diagnosis of Leishmania infantum in the indigenous Tapirapé ethnic group in the state of Mato Grosso. From the 372 individuals assessed, only 0.8% (3/372) tested positive for L. infantum, all from the same village (Urubu Branco). Despite the small number of infected individuals, this study demonstrates the first human cases of Leishmania infantum infection in this population, suggesting the need for regular monitoring of visceral leishmaniasis in the area and leading to a broad discussion on the planning and implementation of public health measures for the indigenous population, while respecting their distinctive territories and culture.

- Abstract
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the current pandemic affecting almost all countries in the world. SARS-CoV-2 is the agent responsible for coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), which has claimed millions of lives around the world. In most patients, SARS-CoV-2 infection does not cause clinical signs. However, some infected people develop symptoms, which include loss of smell or taste, fever, dry cough, headache, severe pneumonia, as well as coagulation disorders. The aim of this work is to report genetic factors of SARS-CoV-2 and host-associated to severe COVID-19, placing special emphasis on the viral entry and molecules of the immune system involved with viral infection. Besides this, we analyze SARS-CoV-2 variants and their structural characteristics related to the binding to polymorphic angiotensin-converting enzyme type 2 (ACE2). Additionally, we also review other polymorphisms as well as some epigenetic factors involved in the immunopathogenesis of COVID-19. These factors and viral variability could explain the increment of infection rate and/or in the development of severe COVID-19.

48. Diversity of intestinal protozoa and clinical signs associated in wild-caught Phoneutria nigriventer kept in captivity for the anti-arachnid serum production.

- Abstract
The phylum Arthropoda comprises approximately 85% of all described animal species. The class Arachnida includes some invertebrates of great importance as they are either involved in the transmission of diseases or poses a risk of human envenomation. Spiders belonging to the genus Phoneutria sp., are the arachnids exhibiting medical importance. These animals were quarantined and maintained in captivity at the Biotério de Artrópodes of the Instituto Butantan, São Paulo, Brazil, for the production of the anti-arachnid serum. A total 509 feces samples from different Phoneutria nigriventer were analyzed, and 131 (25.73%) samples were found to be positive for flagellates and ciliates. All positive samples were subjected to DNA extraction and amplification of 18S gene. A total of 16 sequences were obtained and analyzed using BLAST. Sequences were identified as Colpoda steiini, one as Colpoda aspera, one to Colpoda sp., and one as "ciliated". Four identified as Parabodo caudatus, two as Urostipulosphaera sp., one as Helkesimastix sp. , and one as a Euglena-like. The presence of clinical signs was observed in 16 spiders. The intestinal protozoa that affect armed spiders were identified for the first time as an initial step for understanding the parasitic diseases in these organisms., Competing Interests: None., (© 2021 The Authors.)

- Abstract
Although the clearance of low-molecular weight toxins is modulated by dialysis dose, the relationship between dialysis adequacy and middle systemic inflammatory mediators is often overlooked. Thus, the relationship between dialysis adequacy, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in hemodialysis (HD) patients was investigated. Forty-eight HD patients (19 women and 25 men) were investigated. Age, body mass index, time in HD, nutritional status, Kt/V and blood biochemical parameters was similar in patients of both sexes (P > 0.05). Thus, patients were stratified by dialysis adequacy measured by Kt/V method (adequate Kt/V ≥ 1.2). Post-HD urea, creatinine, cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10) and chemokines (CCL-2, CCL-5, CXCL-8 and CXCL-10) were higher in patients with Kt/V < 1.2 (P < 0.05). Kt/V exhibited significant correlation with CXCL-10/IP-10 serum levels. Positive correlation between creatinine with IFN-γ, CCL-2/MCP-1, and CXCL-10/IP-10, and negative correlation with IL-10 was identified in patients with Kt/V < 1.2 (P < 0.05). In patients with Kt/V ≥ 1.2, only IL-10 was positively and CXCL-10/IP-10 negatively correlated with creatinine levels (P < 0.05). Kt/V and creatinine levels exhibited variable predictive value (Kt/V = 27% to 37%, creatinine = 29% to 47%) to explain cytokines and chemokines circulating levels in patients with adequate and inadequate dialysis dose. Taken together, our findings provide evidence that in addition to modulating uremic toxins levels, such as urea and creatinine, dialysis dose is associated with circulating levels of inflammatory mediators. Thus, low Kt/V results and creatinine accumulation are potential indicators of the systemic inflammatory stress determined by up-regulation of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and downregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. 50. Efficacy of ropivacaine versus bupivacaine in preventing peribulbar block failure: A meta-analysis.

- Abstract
Purpose: Peribulbar block is considered a standard of care in ophthalmological practice due to its easy execution and minor complications. There is a paucity of studies confirming efficacy between ropivacaine and bupivacaine for this specific technique. We evaluated the efficacy of ropivacaine or bupivacaine in preventing total or partial peribulbar block failure in ophthalmic surgeries., Methods: Meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials, comparing patients submitted to ophthalmic surgeries under peribulbar anesthesia with ropivacaine and bupivacaine. We searched in different databases for articles published until March, 2018. Data on patients, anesthesia, procedures and akinesia were tabulated. After calculating the chi-square of heterogeneity, we adopted a random-effects model with DerSimonian-Laird test, as well as an odds ratio and a 95% confidence interval., Results: From the 310 articles identified, 21 studies were selected. The use of ropivacaine was considered a protective factor for ocular akinesia failure in peribulbar block when compared to bupivacaine (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.35-0.81 and p value = 0.003)., Conclusions: In ophthalmic surgeries, ropivacaine in peribulbar anesthesia is associated with lower rate of block failure when compared to bupivacaine.
