This experiment aimed to evaluate the forage species and their effect on fruit production of the chayote crop. For this, the culture was under observation in the first ten minutes at each time, from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, with three repetitions, in each year studied (1994, 2001, 2009 and 2016). With the exception of 2009, Trigona spinipes stingless bees were frequent and constant insects in these flowers between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm, visiting mainly male flowers for nectar collection and due to foraging behavior this stingless bee may be considered a pollinator of the chayote. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infectionrelated hospitalization in the first year of life. Surfactant dysfunction is central to pathophysiologic mechanisms of various pulmonary diseases including RSV. We hypothesized that RSV severity is associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of surfactant proteins (SPs). We prospectively enrolled 405 RSV-positive children and divided them into moderate and severe RSV disease. DNA was extracted and genotyped for sixteen specific SP gene SNPs. SP-A1 and A2 haplotypes were assigned. The association of RSV severity with SP gene SNPs was investigated by multivariate logistic regression. A likelihood ratio test was used to test the goodness of fit between two models (one with clinical and demographic data alone and another that included genetic variants). p = 0.05 denotes statistical significance. A molecular dynamics simulation was done to determine the impact of the SFTPA2 rs1965708 on the SP-A behavior under various conditions. Infants with severe disease were more likely to be younger, of lower weight, and exposed to household pets and smoking, as well as having co-infection on admission. A decreased risk of severe RSV was associated with the rs17886395_C of the SFTPA2 and rs2243639_A of the SFTPD, whereas an increased risk was associated with the rs1059047_C of the SFTPA1. RSV severity was not associated with SNPs of SFTPB and SFTPC. An increased risk of severe RSV was associated with the 1A0 genotype of SFTPA2 in its homozygous or heterozygous form with 1A3. A molecular dynamic simulation study of SP-A variants that differ in amino acid 223, an important amino acid change (Q223K) between 1A0 and 1A3, showed no major impact on the behavior of these two variants except for higher thermodynamic stability of the K223 variant. The likelihood ratio test showed that the model with multi-allelic variants along with clinical and demographic data was a better fit to predict RSV severity. In summary, RSV severity was associated with hydrophilic (but not with hydrophobic) SPs gene variants. In the context of the rapid increase of antibiotic-resistant infections, in particular of pneumonia, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), the microbiological application of photodynamic therapy (PDT), comes in as a promising treatment alternative since the induced damage and resultant death are not dependent on a specific biomolecule or cellular pathway. The applicability of aPDT using the photosensitizer indocyanine green with infrared light has been successfully demonstrated for different bacterial agents in vitro, and the combination of pulmonary delivery using nebulization and external light activation has been shown to be feasible. However, there has been little progress in obtaining sufficient in vivo efficacy results. This study reports the lung surfactant as a significant suppressor of aPDT in the lungs. In vitro, the clinical surfactant Survanta® reduced the aPDT effect of indocyanine green, Photodithazine®, bacteriochlorintrizma, and protoporphyrin IX against Streptococcus pneumoniae. The absorbance and fluorescence spectra, as well as the photobleaching profile, suggested that the decrease in efficacy is not a result of singlet oxygen quenching, while a molecular dynamics simulation showed an affinity for the polar head groups of the surfactant phospholipids that likely impacts uptake of the photosensitizers by the bacteria. Methylene blue is the exception, likely because its high water solubility confers a higher mobility when interacting with the surfactant layer. Flies and bees pollinate jatropha flowers? The present experiment was carried out in Jatropha curcas L. flowering, on the campus of the Centro Universitário Moura Lacerda, in Ribeirão Preto, SP, in September 2016, with the objective of identifying floral visitors in the culture, their behavior in flowers (frequency and constancy) in irrigated and nonirrigated areas. The frequency of insects was obtained by counting the first 10 minutes of each time, from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, on three different days, crossing the culture lines. The foraging behavior of each insect species was evaluated through direct observations, during the day, in the experimental period. The fruits obtained from irrigated and non-irrigated treatment were weighed and the number of seeds was counted. The insects observed visiting the physic nut flowers were Eristalis tenax flies (42.3%) (Diptera: Syrphidae), Califoridian dipterans (Diptera: Calliphoridae) (33.4%), Musca domestica (black fly) (9.9%), vespids (6.8%) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), Africanized honeybees Apis mellifera (3.3%) (Hymenoptera: Apidae), Pseudoaugochloropsis graminea bees (2.5%) (Hymenoptera: Halictidae) and lepidoptera (1, 8%) (Lepidoptera). It can be concluded that the diptera and Africanized honeybees were frequent and constant floral visitors and for their foraging behavior they were considered pollinating agents of the culture. The irrigated area produced more female than male flowers and the fruits obtained from flowers in an irrigated area had a higher number of fruits with three seeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objectives were to evaluate the biodiversity of bees, forage behavior and their effect on fruit production in the gherkin crop (Cucumis anguria L.) in the campus of the University Center Moura Lacerda in two years. The frequency and type of collection of the insects in the flowers was observed by counting from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the first 10 minutes of each time, for three distinct days in each year. The percentage of fruiting was quantified in 25 female flowers covered with nylon compared to the 25 female flowers uncovered in the two years. The flowers were visited by the Africanized honey bees Apis mellifera and the native bees Plebeia sp., Exomalopsis sp. and Melissodes sp., and the Africanized honey bees presented higher frequency and constancy with a higher number of visits in the male flowers compared to the female ones and these visits occurred between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Without the visitation of the bees there was no fruit production, and both the Africanized honey bee and the native ones when collecting nectar and pollen, visited both female and male flowers, carrying pollen in their body, being considered important pollinators of this culture.
