In this work, we extend Saia's results on the characterization of Newton non-degenerate ideals to the context of ideals in $O_{X(S)}$, where $X(S)$ is an affine toric variety defined by the semigroup $S\subset \mathbb{Z}^{n}_{+}$. We explore the relationship between the integral closure of ideals and the Newton polyhedron. We introduce and characterize non-degenerate ideals, showing that their integral closure is generated by specific monomials related to the Newton polyhedron.

Virtual Assistants (VAs) are important Information Retrieval platforms that help users accomplish various tasks through spoken commands. The speech recognition system (speech-to-text) uses query priors, trained solely on text, to distinguish between phonetically confusing alternatives. Hence, the generation of synthetic queries that are similar to existing VA usage can greatly improve upon the VA's abilities -- especially for use-cases that do not (yet) occur in paired audio/text data. In this paper, we provide a preliminary exploration of the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate synthetic queries that are complementary to template-based methods. We investigate whether the methods (a) generate queries that are similar to randomly sampled, representative, and anonymized user queries from a popular VA, and (b) whether the generated queries are specific. We find that LLMs generate more verbose queries, compared to template-based methods, and reference aspects specific to the entity. The generated queries are similar to VA user queries, and are specific enough to retrieve the relevant entity. We conclude that queries generated by LLMs and templates are complementary., Comment: SIGIR '24. The 47th International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research & Development in Information Retrieval

Early optimism saw possibilities for social media to renew democratic discourse, marked by hopes for individuals from diverse backgrounds to find opportunities to learn from and interact with others different from themselves. This optimism quickly waned as social media seemed to breed ideological homophily marked by "filter bubble" or "echo chambers." A typical response to the sense of fragmentation has been to encourage exposure to more cross-partisan sources of information. But do outlets that reach across partisan lines in fact generate more civil discourse? And does the civility of discourse hosted by such outlets vary depending on the political context in which they operate? To answer these questions, we identified bubble reachers, users who distribute content that reaches other users with diverse political opinions in recent presidential elections in Brazil, where populism has deep roots in the political culture, and Canada, where the political culture is comparatively moderate. Given that background, this research studies unexplored properties of content shared by bubble reachers, specifically the quality of conversations and comments it generates. We examine how ideologically neutral bubble reachers differ from ideologically partisan accounts in the level of uncivil discourse they provoke, and explore how this varies in the context of the two countries considered. Our results suggest that while ideologically neutral bubble reachers support less uncivil discourse in Canada, the opposite relationship holds in Brazil. Even non-political content by ideologically neutral bubble reachers elicits a considerable amount of uncivil discourse in Brazil. This indicates that bubble reaching and incivility are moderated by the national political context. Our results complicate the simple hypothesis of a universal impact of neutral bubble reachers across contexts., Comment: 41 pages, 5 figures

This study examines the effects of de-globalization trends on international trade networks and their role in improving forecasts for economic growth. Using section-level trade data from nearly 200 countries from 2010 to 2022, we identify significant shifts in the network topology driven by rising trade policy uncertainty. Our analysis highlights key global players through centrality rankings, with the United States, China, and Germany maintaining consistent dominance. Using a horse race of supervised regressors, we find that network topology descriptors evaluated from section-specific trade networks substantially enhance the quality of a country's GDP growth forecast. We also find that non-linear models, such as Random Forest, XGBoost, and LightGBM, outperform traditional linear models used in the economics literature. Using SHAP values to interpret these non-linear model's predictions, we find that about half of most important features originate from the network descriptors, underscoring their vital role in refining forecasts. Moreover, this study emphasizes the significance of recent economic performance, population growth, and the primary sector's influence in shaping economic growth predictions, offering novel insights into the intricacies of economic growth forecasting.

Urban research has long recognized that neighbourhoods are dynamic and relational. However, lack of data, methodologies, and computer processing power have hampered a formal quantitative examination of neighbourhood relational dynamics. To make progress on this issue, this study proposes a graph neural network (GNN) approach that permits combining and evaluating multiple sources of information about internal characteristics of neighbourhoods, their past characteristics, and flows of groups among them, potentially providing greater expressive power in predictive models. By exploring a public large-scale dataset from Yelp, we show the potential of our approach for considering structural connectedness in predicting neighbourhood attributes, specifically to predict local culture. Results are promising from a substantive and methodologically point of view. Substantively, we find that either local area information (e.g. area demographics) or group profiles (tastes of Yelp reviewers) give the best results in predicting local culture, and they are nearly equivalent in all studied cases. Methodologically, exploring group profiles could be a helpful alternative where finding local information for specific areas is challenging, since they can be extracted automatically from many forms of online data. Thus, our approach could empower researchers and policy-makers to use a range of data sources when other local area information is lacking., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

This study aims to propose an approach for spatiotemporal integration of bus transit, which enables users to change bus lines by paying a single fare. This could increase bus transit efficiency and, consequently, help to make this mode of transportation more attractive. Usually, this strategy is allowed for a few hours in a non-restricted area; thus, certain walking distance areas behave like "virtual terminals." For that, two data-driven algorithms are proposed in this work. First, a new algorithm for detecting itineraries based on bus GPS data and the bus stop location. The proposed algorithm's results show that 90% of the database detected valid itineraries by excluding invalid markings and adding times at missing bus stops through temporal interpolation. Second, this study proposes a bus stop clustering algorithm to define suitable areas for these virtual terminals where it would be possible to make bus transfers outside the physical terminals. Using real-world origin-destination trips, the bus network, including clusters, can reduce traveled distances by up to 50%, making twice as many connections on average., Comment: 20 pages, 16 FIGURES

On-device Virtual Assistants (VAs) powered by Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) require effective knowledge integration for the challenging entity-rich query recognition. In this paper, we conduct an empirical study of modeling strategies for server-side rescoring of spoken information domain queries using various categories of Language Models (LMs) (N-gram word LMs, sub-word neural LMs). We investigate the combination of on-device and server-side signals, and demonstrate significant WER improvements of 23%-35% on various entity-centric query subpopulations by integrating various server-side LMs compared to performing ASR on-device only. We also perform a comparison between LMs trained on domain data and a GPT-3 variant offered by OpenAI as a baseline. Furthermore, we also show that model fusion of multiple server-side LMs trained from scratch most effectively combines complementary strengths of each model and integrates knowledge learned from domain-specific data to a VA ASR system.

We study model pruning methods applied to Transformer-based neural network language models for automatic speech recognition. We explore three aspects of the pruning frame work, namely criterion, method and scheduler, analyzing their contribution in terms of accuracy and inference speed. To the best of our knowledge, such in-depth analyses on large-scale recognition systems has not been reported in the literature. In addition, we propose a variant of low-rank approximation suitable for incrementally compressing models, and delivering multiple models with varied target sizes. Among other results, we show that a) data-driven pruning outperforms magnitude-driven in several scenarios; b) incremental pruning achieves higher accuracy compared to one-shot pruning, especially when targeting smaller sizes; and c) low-rank approximation presents the best trade-off between size reduction and inference speed-up for moderate compression., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Mathematics - Differential Geometry - Abstract
In this paper, we discuss the concept of $\rho$-regularity of analytic map germs and its close relationship with the existence of locally trivial smooth fibrations, known as the Milnor fibrations. The presence of a Thom regular stratification or the Milnor condition (b) at the origin, indicates the transversality of the fibers of the map G with respect to the levels of a function $\rho$, which guarantees $\rho$-regularity. Consequently, both conditions are crucial for the presence of open book structures and the Milnor fibrations. The work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the main results concerning the existence of Thom regular stratifications and the Milnor condition (b) for germs of analytic maps. It presents strategies and criteria to identify and ensure these regularity conditions and discusses situations where they may not be satisfied. The goal is to understand the presence and limitations of these conditions in various contexts.

Computer Science - Digital Libraries - Abstract
The identification of the most significant concepts in unstructured data is of critical importance in various practical applications. Despite the large number of methods that have been put forth to extract the main topics of texts, a limited number of studies have probed the impact of the text length on the performance of keyword extraction (KE) methods. In this study, we adopted a network-based approach to evaluate whether keywords extracted from paper abstracts are compatible with keywords extracted from full papers. We employed a community detection method to identify groups of related papers in citation networks. These paper clusters were then employed to extract keywords from abstracts. Our results indicate that while the various community detection methods employed in our KE approach yielded similar levels of accuracy, a correlation analysis revealed that these methods produced distinct keyword lists for each abstract. We also observed that all considered approaches, however, reach low values of accuracy. Surprisingly, text clustering approaches outperformed all citation-based methods. The findings suggest that using different sources of information to extract keywords can lead to significant differences in performance. This effect can play an important role in applications relying upon the identification of relevant concepts.

Introduction: Fibrous dysplasia is an osseous lesion with an unknown etiology. It is characterized by the osseous maturation insufficiency. It may affect any bone, but the affection of craniofacial bones is the most critical for otorhinolaryngology. Maxilla is the most affected facial bone and the orbitary invasion is an uncommon event. The symptoms are unspecific and for its low suspicion and uncommonness, the diagnosis is generally late. The monostotic form presents a slow growth and asymptomatic course and needs to be followed up. The polyostotic type has a progressive behavior and is associated to recurrence and complications. Objective: To present two cases of patients with fibrous dysplasia diagnosis and describe the clinical presentation, radiological findings and the treatment of this pathology. Cases Report: Two cases of fibrous dysplasia are reported, which initially presented unspecific symptomatology, but with characteristic radiologic signs. They were submitted to surgical treatment for resection of the lesions and evolved with frequent recurrences with extensive affection of the facial sinuses, one patient had cranial base invasion and frontal craniotomy was needed for tumoral excision. Final Comments: Fibrous dysplasia is an uncommon osteopathy. The tomography is the choice method for characterization of the tumoral expansion, and helps in the surgical planning. The surgical strategy is indicated for symptomatic lesions, functions alterations or anatomic disorders. This article describes two uncommon manifestations of recurrent fibrous dysplasia with an extensive affection of anthro maxillary, ethmoidal and sphenoid sinuses, in addition to orbitary and cranial base invasion.

Introduction: Xylitol is a sugar naturally found in various vegetables and fruits. Studies have demonstrated that the xylitol can be used as new preventive method for acute otitis media (AOM). Objective: To clarify the possible mechanisms of xylitol actions to inhibit the growth of otopathogenic bacteria and to describe researches that contribute for the discussion about the feasibility of the use of this sugar in the prevention of AOM. Method: Literature review based on scientific articles selected by means of the medical databases: MEDLINE, Cochrane, PubMed (MeSH) and Web of Science. Results: Studies have demonstrated the efficacy of xylitol to prevent the AOM, when it is administered five times a day in chewing gum. However, this sugar is not so effective in the prevention of AOM during upper airways infections. Final Comments: Xylitol seems to be an effective strategy in prevention of acute otitis media. However, new studies are necessary to establish ideal doses, frequencies and vehicles for the correct administration of the sugar, which allows for its utilization in the public health system.

This work studies the use of attention masking in transformer transducer based speech recognition for building a single configurable model for different deployment scenarios. We present a comprehensive set of experiments comparing fixed masking, where the same attention mask is applied at every frame, with chunked masking, where the attention mask for each frame is determined by chunk boundaries, in terms of recognition accuracy and latency. We then explore the use of variable masking, where the attention masks are sampled from a target distribution at training time, to build models that can work in different configurations. Finally, we investigate how a single configurable model can be used to perform both first pass streaming recognition and second pass acoustic rescoring. Experiments show that chunked masking achieves a better accuracy vs latency trade-off compared to fixed masking, both with and without FastEmit. We also show that variable masking improves the accuracy by up to 8% relative in the acoustic re-scoring scenario., Comment: To appear in ICASSP 2023

Code-switching describes the practice of using more than one language in the same sentence. In this study, we investigate how to optimize a neural transducer based bilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) model for code-switching speech. Focusing on the scenario where the ASR model is trained without supervised code-switching data, we found that semi-supervised training and synthetic code-switched data can improve the bilingual ASR system on code-switching speech. We analyze how each of the neural transducer's encoders contributes towards code-switching performance by measuring encoder-specific recall values, and evaluate our English/Mandarin system on the ASCEND data set. Our final system achieves 25% mixed error rate (MER) on the ASCEND English/Mandarin code-switching test set -- reducing the MER by 2.1% absolute compared to the previous literature -- while maintaining good accuracy on the monolingual test sets., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, submitted to ICASSP 2023, *: equal contributions

Computer Science - Social and Information Networks - Abstract
This paper elaborates a multi-model approach to studying how local scenes change. We refer to this as the "4 D's" of scene change: development, differentiation, defense, and diffusion. Each posits somewhat distinct change processes, and has its own tradition of theory and empirical research, which we briefly review. After summarizing some major trends in scenes and amenities in the US context, for each change model, we present some initial findings, discussing data and methods throughout. Our overall goal is to point toward new research arcs on change models of scenes, and to give some clear examples and directions for how to think about and collect data to understand what makes some scenes change, others not, why, and in what directions., Comment: Published at Journal Wuhan University

Computer Science - Software Engineering ,Computer Science - Human-Computer Interaction - Abstract
Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD) has emerged in the last years as a powerful methodology to specify testable and executable user requirements through stories and scenarios. With the support of external testing frameworks, BDD stories can be used to automatically assess the behavior of a fully functional software system. This article describes a toolset which extends BDD with the aim of providing automated assessment also for user interface design artifacts to ensure their consistency with the user requirements since the beginning of a software project. The approach has been evaluated by exploiting previously specified user requirements for a web system to book business trips. Such requirements gave rise to a set of BDD stories that have been refined and used to automatically assess the consistency of task models, graphical user interface (GUI) prototypes, and final GUIs of the system. The results have shown that our approach was able to identify different types of inconsistencies in the set of analyzed artifacts and consistently keep the semantic traces between them.
