Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of solutions containing aminomethacrylate copolymer (AA) and sodium fluoride (F; 225 ppm F−) or fluoride plus stannous chloride (FSn; 225 ppm F−, 800 ppm Sn2+) against enamel and dentin erosion/abrasion. Solutions F, FSn, AA, F+AA, FSn+AA, and deionized water as negative control were tested. Bovine enamel and dentin specimens (n = 13/solution/substrate) underwent a set of erosion‐abrasion cycles (0.3% citric acid [5 min, 4×/day], human saliva [1 h, 4×/day], brushing [15 s, 2×/day], and treatments [2 min, 2×/day]) for each of five days. Initial enamel erosion was evaluated using Knoop microhardness after the first and second acid challenge on day 1, and surface loss with profilometry after day 5. KOH‐soluble fluoride was assessed. Data were analyzed with ANOVA/Tukey tests. The combination of fluoride and AA resulted in higher protection against enamel erosion, whereas this was not the case for the combination of AA and FSn. All treatments protected against enamel and dentin loss. The lowest surface loss values were observed with F+AA and FSn+AA. The polymer did not significantly influence the KOH‐soluble fluoride formation on enamel/dentin specimens. The aminomethacrylate copolymer effectively enhanced the efficacy of sodium fluoride against initial erosion and improved the control of enamel and dentin wear of F and FSn solutions. Abstract

Graphene-based materials have increasingly attracted attention in recent years. It is a material is recognized worldwide due to its numerous applications in several sectors. However, graphene production involves several challenges: scalability, high costs, and high-quality production. This study synthesized graphene-like porous carbon nanosheets (GPCNs) through a thermochemical process under a nitrogen atmosphere using grape bagasse as a precursor. Three temperatures (700, 800, and 900 ºC) of the pyrolysis process were studied. Chemical graphitization and activation were used to form high-specific surface area materials: FeCl3.6H2O(aq) and ZnCl2(s) in a simultaneous activation-graphitization (SAG) method. The materials obtained (GPCN700, GPCN800, and GPCN900) were compared to previously produced chars (C700, C800, and C900). A high specific surface area and total pore volume were obtained for GPCN materials, and GPCN900 presented the highest values: 1062.7 m2g−1 and 0.635 cm3 g−1, respectively. The GPCN and char materials were classified as mesoporous and applied as adsorbents for CO2(g). The GPCN800 presented the best CO2(g) adsorbent, with a CO2(g) adsorption capacity of 168.71 mg g−1. Abstract

This work evaluated the potential of a synthesized faujasite-type zeolite Y as an adsorbent for the removal of relevant heavy metals such as silver (Ag+), copper (Cu2+), and cobalt (Co2+). The adsorption data of Ag+, Cu2+, and Co2+ ions were determined experimentally at pH 6 and temperatures of 298, 308, and 318 K. Two theoretical approaches have been applied based on statistical physics modeling and density functional theory (DFT) to understand and characterize the ion exchanges involved in the removal of all metals. Results showed that this zeolite was more efficient for the adsorption of Ag+ via cation-exchange. Based on the physical modelling, the removal of heavy metals on this zeolite was mono and multi-ionic (simple and multi-interactions), where the ions interacted via one and two adsorption sites. It was also noted that the temperature increment generated more available functional groups of the zeolite, facilitating the access to the smaller cavities and the interactions with the adsorbent. Adsorption energies for removing these metals with tested zeolite were slightly endothermic and were consistent with the typical values reported for ion exchange systems of heavy metals + zeolites. DFT results demonstrated that these cationic exchange energies depend on the nature of precursor salt, but with the same ranking. Both statistical and DFT approaches agreed that exchange Ag+ in zeolite Y was easier than Cu2+ and Co2+. Overall, the application of both theoretical approaches provided a reliable interpretation of the adsorption mechanism.

Abstract

Citalopram (CIT) is a drug widely used around the world in the treatment of depression. Due to the high toxicity of CIT and the failure of the methods used in treatment plants to purify water, the removal of this pollutant from the environment is very necessary. In this study, the removal of CIT was performed using graphene oxide (GO) and magnetic graphene oxide (GO·Fe3O41:1, 1:5, and 1:10). Moreover, the adsorption of CIT was accomplished at low drug concentrations, and the safety of biological and phytological adsorbents was investigated. The characteristics of the adsorbents were analyzed through SEM and TEM images, XRD, EDS, XPS, FTIR, Raman, VSM and the analysis revealed the spectra and signal characteristics of GO and GO·Fe3O4. The GO·Fe3O41:1 showed the highest adsorption capacity of 97.92 mg g−1and removal percentage (98%). The pH, initial concentration, and glucose natural organic matter did not significantly affect the adsorption. The ionic strength and high dosages of GO·Fe3O41:1 disfavors the adsorption. Pseudo-second-order (PSO) and Liu models suggest that adsorption occurs at heterogeneous surfaces. The thermodynamic study confirms that CIT adsorption onto GO·Fe3O4was spontaneous and exothermic. The in vitroassays evidenced that the complex, after adsorption, decreases the genotoxicity and the oxidative stress caused by CIT. Finally, the complex after adsorption does not show phytotoxic for L. sativaseeds. These findings have significant relevance for the safe use of GO·Fe3O41:1, allowing the employ in water remediation processes and their biocompatibility for biological applications.

34. Vine pruning waste-based activated carbon for cerium and lanthanum adsorption from water and real leachate

Abstract

In this study, vine pruning wastes (VPW) were used as raw material to develop an alternative activated carbon (VPW-AC) for adsorbing and concentrating rare earth elements cerium (Ce(III)) and lanthanum (La(III)) from synthetic and real leachate solutions. The Ce and La adsorption studies evaluated the effects of VPW-AC dosage, pH, contact time, rare earth initial concentration, and temperature. The VPW-AC adsorbent was subjected to many physicochemical characterization methods to correlate and understand its adsorptive performance. The characterization data indicate a carbonaceous adsorbent with a specific surface area of 467 m2/g. Zeta potential indicates a material with a negatively charged surface at a pH higher than 3.1, which is extremely beneficial to cations removal. For both rare earths elements (REEs), the adsorption capacity increases with the increase of the pH, reaching its maximum at pH 4–6. The kinetic data are well fitted by Avrami-fractional order, while the Liu model agreeably fits equilibrium data. The maximum adsorption capacities for Ce(III) and La(III) are 48.45 and 53.65 mg/g at 298 K, respectively. The thermodynamic studies suggest that the adsorption process is favorable, spontaneous, and exothermic for both REEs. Pore filling, surface complexation, and ion exchange are the dominant mechanisms. Finally, the VPW-AC was subjected to the recovery of REEs from real phosphogypsum leachate, and it is proved that it can be successfully used to recover REEs in a real process.

Abstract

• Statistical physics provides pivotal insights into pesticide behaviors. • Statistical criteria can be very misleading when working with narrow data sets. • Master the parameters before taking as true any value provided by software. • Thermodynamic investigations should be used to validate the liability of the data. Mathematical models play a crucial role in data acquisition by boosting the capacity to interpret and group the gathered information. However, the challenge lies in choosing the most accurate model to represent data sets with very slight nuances, as it occurs in the validation of adsorption processes considering molecules with different properties but similar structural attributes. Due to these very small variations, there is a high chance of excessive adaption to specific patterns created by the distributions, statistically blindsiding the decision-making. In this work, we used statistical physics (sta-phy) modeling and thermodynamic calculations of the three different pesticides 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), dicamba (DCB), and mecoprop (MCPP) on a woody based activated carbon (WBAC) to demonstrate these patterns while also unveiling the mechanisms involved. We demonstrate that the statistical criteria alone do not provide enough clarity in these cases, and we propose using the physical meaning of each estimated parameter as a way out. Thus, in this work, we prove in detail that using sta-phy models requires absolute mastering of the subjects to ensure reliable results by understanding the relationships between the adsorption parameters and the system properties instead of a simple read of the determination coefficients. 40. Rethinking food loss and waste to promote sustainable resource use and climate change mitigation in agri-food systems: A review.

Abstract

The sustainable agri-food system is an important sector recognized for promoting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals on food security, resource conservation and climate change mitigation. However, the increasing food loss and waste (FLW) along the supply chains has continued to hinder these goals. This study evaluates the trend of FLW research from 1975 to 2022 and how it promotes the achievement of resource and environmental sustainability in agri-food systems. The salient research themes and hotspots that are of interest to researchers were identified. Bibliometric and network analyses were carried out on scholarly research articles from the Scopus database using bibliometrix and VOSviewer. Furthermore, the content analysis was conducted on the selected highly influential articles containing relevant data to understand the role of FLW in promoting sustainable agri-food systems. The results showed disaggregate and unbalanced research distribution on the impacts of FLW among the countries, with China and the United States having the highest contributions. The identified major research themes relating to sustainable agri-food systems are food waste and sustainable systems, food waste management and food waste impact assessment. Moreover, the circular economy was found to be a relatively new approach being explored in agri-food systems to promote FLW reduction and ensure sustainability of resource use.
