We proceed with the study of the Nehari manifold method for functionals in $C^1(X \setminus \{0\})$, where $X$ is a Banach space. We deal now with functionals whose fibering maps have two critical points (a minimiser followed by a maximiser). Under some additional conditions we show that the Nehari manifold method provides us with the ground state level and two sequences of critical values for these functionals. These results are applied to the class of {\it prescribed energy problems} as well as to the concave-convex problem for the {\it affine} $p$-Laplacian operator.

Given a real Banach space $X$, we show that the Nehari manifold method can be applied to functionals which are $C^1$ in $X \setminus \{0\}$. In particular we deal with functionals that can be unbounded near $0$, and prove the existence of a ground state and infinitely many critical points for such functionals. These results are then applied to three classes of problems: the {\it prescribed energy problem} for a family of functionals depending on a parameter, problems involving the {\it affine} $p$-Laplacian operator, and degenerate Kirchhoff type problems.

We look for critical points with prescribed energy for the family of even functionals $\Phi_\mu=I_1-\mu I_2$, where $I_1,I_2$ are $C^1$ functionals on a Banach space $X$, and $\mu \in \mathbb{R}$. For several classes of $\Phi_\mu$ we prove the existence of infinitely many couples $(\mu_{n,c}, u_{n,c})$ such that $$\Phi'_{\mu_{n,c}}(\pm u_{n,c}) = 0 \quad \mbox{and} \quad \Phi_{\mu_{n,c}}( \pm u_{n,c}) = c \quad \forall n \in \mathbb{N}.$$ More generally, we analyze the structure of the solution set of the problem $$\Phi_\mu'(u)=0, \quad \Phi_{\mu}(u)=c$$ with respect to $\mu$ and $c$. In particular, we show that the maps $c \mapsto \mu_{n,c}$ are continuous, which gives rise to a family of {\it energy curves} for this problem. The analysis of these curves provide us with several bifurcation and multiplicity type results, which are then applied to some elliptic problems. Our approach is based on the {\it nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotient} method developed in \cite{I1}.

We investigate zero energy critical points for a class of functionals $\Phi_\mu$ defined on a uniformly convex Banach space, and depending on a real parameter $\mu$. More precisely, we show the existence of a sequence $(\mu_n)$ such that $\Phi_{\mu_n}$ has a pair of critical points $\pm u_n$ satisfying $\Phi_{\mu_n}(\pm u_n)=0$, for every $n$. In addition, we provide some properties of $\mu_n$ and $u_n$. This result, which is proved via a fibering map approach (based on the {\it nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotient} method \cite{I1}) combined with the Ljusternik-Schnirelman theory, is then applied to several classes of elliptic pdes.

We analyze the topological structure of the Nehari set for a class of functionals depending on a real parameter $\lambda$, and having two degrees of homogeneity. A special attention is paid to the extremal parameter $\lambda^*$, which is the threshold value for the Nehari set to be given by a {\it natural constraint}. The main difficulty arises when $\lambda>\lambda^*$, as the energy functional may be unbounded from below over the Nehari set. In such situation we prove the existence of local minimizers of the functional constrained to this set. We unify and extend previous existence and multiplicity results for critical points of indefinite, $(p,q)$-Laplacian, and Kirchhoff type problems.

Given a reflexive Banach space $X$, we consider a class of functionals $\Phi \in C^1(X,\Re)$ that do not behave in a uniform way, in the sense that the map $t \mapsto \Phi(tu)$, $t>0$, does not have a uniform geometry with respect to $u\in X$. Assuming instead such a uniform behavior within an open cone $Y \subset X \setminus \{0\}$, we show that $\Phi$ has a ground state relative to $Y$. Some further conditions ensure that this relative ground state is the (absolute) ground state of $\Phi$. Several applications to elliptic equations and systems are given.

In this paper we apply the fibering method of Pohozaev to a Schr\"odinger-Poisson system, with prescribed $L^{2}$ norm of the unknown, in the whole $\mathbb R^{3}$. The method makes clear the role played by the exponents $p=3, p=8/3, p=10/3$. Beside to show as old results can be obtained in a unified way, we exhibit also new ones.

In this work we are concerned with the following class of equations \[ -\Delta_p u -\lambda h(x)|u|^{p-2}u=f(x)|u|^{\gamma-2}u, \quad \mbox{in } \mathbb{R}^N, \] involving indefinite weight functions. The existence of solution may depend on the parameter $\lambda$. We analyze the extreme value $\lambda^{*}$ and study its relation with the Nehari manifold. Our goal is to establish the existence of two solutions when $\lambda>\lambda^{*}$. This work extends and complements the results obtained by J. Chabrowski and D.G. Costa [Comm. Partial Differential Equations 33 (2008), 1368--1394]

We study an abstract equation in a reflexive Banach space, depending on a real parameter $\lambda$. The equation is composed by homogeneous potential operators. By analyzing the Nehari sets, we prove a bifurcation result. In some particular cases we describe the full bifurcation diagram, and in general, we estimate the parameter $\lambda_b$ for which the problem does not have non-zero solution when $\lambda>\lambda_b$. We give many applications to partial differential equations: Kirchhoff type equations, Schr\"odinger equations coupled with the electromagnetic field, Chern-Simons-Schr\"odinger systems and a nonlinear eigenvalue problem.

We are concerned with the multiplicity of positive solutions for the singular superlinear and subcritical Schr\"odinger equation $$ \begin{array}{c} -\Delta u +V(x)u=\lambda a(x)u^{-\gamma}+b(x)u^{p}~\mbox{in}~ \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{array} $$ beyond the Nehari extremal value, as defined in Il'yasov [Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal., 2017], when the potential $b \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$ may change its sign, $00$ is a real parameter. The main difficulties come from the non-differentiability of the energy functional and the fact that the intersection of the boundaries of the connected components of the Nehari set is non empty. We overcome these difficulties by exploring topological structures of that boundary to build non-empty sets whose boundaries have empty intersection and minimizing over them by controlling the energy level.

We study a superlinear and subcritical Kirchhoff type equation which is variational and depends upon a real parameter $\lambda$. The nonlocal term forces some of the fiber maps associated with the energy functional to have two critical points. This suggest multiplicity of solutions and indeed we show the existence of a local minimum and a mountain pass type solution. We characterize the first parameter $\lambda_0^*$ for which the local minimum has non-negative energy when $\lambda\ge \lambda_0^*$. Moreover we characterize the extremal parameter $\lambda^*$ for which if $\lambda>\lambda^*$, then the only solution to the Kirchhoff equation is the zero function. In fact, $\lambda^*$ can be characterized in terms of the best constant of Sobolev embeddings. We study, with respect to the parameter $q\neq0$, the following Schr\"odinger-Bopp-Podolsky system in $\mathbb R^{3}$ \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} -&\Delta u+\omega u+q^2\phi u=|u|^{p-2}u, \\ &-\Delta \phi+a^2\Delta^2 \phi = 4\pi u^2, \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} where $p\in(2,3], \omega>0, a\geq0$ are fixed. We prove, by means of the fibering approach, that the system has no solutions at all for large values of $q's$, and has two radial solutions for small $q's$. We give also qualitative properties about the energy level of the solutions and a variational characterization of these extremals values of $q$. Our results recover and improve some results in the literature.

We consider a system of quasilinear elliptic equations, with indefinite super-linear nonlinearity, depending on two real parameters $\lambda,\mu$. By using the Nehari manifold and the notion of extremal parameter, we extend some results concerning existence of positive solutions.

We study a $p$-Laplacian equation involving a parameter $\lambda$ and a concave-convex nonlinearity containing a weight which can change sign. By using the Nehari manifold and the fibering method, we show the existence of two positive solutions on some interval $(0,\lambda^*+\varepsilon)$, where $\lambda^*$ can be characterized variationally. We also study the asymptotic behavior of solutions when $\lambda\downarrow 0$.

This paper is concerned with variational continuation of branches of solutions for nonlinear boundary value problems, which involve the p-Laplacian, the indefinite nonlinearity, and depend on the real parameter $\lambda$. A special focus is made on the extreme value of Nehari manifold $\lambda^*$, which determines the threshold of applicability of Nehari manifold method. It is established existence and multiplicity of solutions for strongly nonlinear problems driven by the $\Phi$-Laplacian operator on bounded domains. Our main results are stated without the so called $\Delta_{2}$ condition at infinity which means that the underlying Orlicz-Sobolev spaces are not reflexive.
