3. Tunable-Cavity QED with Phase Qubits

Abstract

We describe a tunable-cavity QED architecture with an rf SQUID phase qubit inductively coupled to a single-mode, resonant cavity with a tunable frequency that allows for both microwave readout of tunneling and dispersive measurements of the qubit. Dispersive measurement is well characterized by a three-level model, strongly dependent on qubit anharmonicity, qubit-cavity coupling and detuning. A tunable cavity frequency provides a way to strongly vary both the qubit-cavity detuning and coupling strength, which can reduce Purcell losses, cavity-induced dephasing of the qubit, and residual bus coupling for a system with multiple qubits. With our qubit-cavity system, we show that dynamic control over the cavity frequency enables one to avoid Purcell losses during coherent qubit evolutions and optimize state readout during qubit measurements. The maximum qubit decay time $T_1$ = 1.5 $\mu$s is found to be limited by surface dielectric losses from a design geometry similar to planar transmon qubits., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

In this work nanometric spinel Co${}_{1-x}$Cu${}_{x}$Fe${}_{2}$O${}_{4}$ powders were obtained by polymeric precursors method at several annealing temperatures between 700 and 1200 ${}^\circ$C. The samples were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction, confirming the ideal inverse spinel structure for CoFe${}_{2}$O${}_{4}$ sample and the tetragonal distorted inverse spinel structure for CuFe${}_{2}$O${}_{4}$ sample. Based on FWHM evaluation, we estimated that crystallite sizes varies between 27 and 37 nm for the non-substituted samples. The optical-active modes were determined by infrared and Raman spectroscopies. The phonon spectra showed a local tetragonal distortion for mixed samples., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We demonstrate single-photon counting at 1550 nm with titanium-nitride (TiN) microwave kinetic inductance detectors. Energy resolution of 0.4 eV and arrival-time resolution of 1.2 microseconds are achieved. 0-, 1-, 2-photon events are resolved and shown to follow Poisson statistics. We find that the temperature-dependent frequency shift deviates from the Mattis-Bardeen theory, and the dissipation response shows a shorter decay time than the frequency response at low temperatures. We suggest that the observed anomalous electrodynamics may be related to quasiparticle traps or subgap states in the disordered TiN films. Finally, the electron density-of-states is derived from the pulse response., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

47. FACTORS INFLUENCING LARVAL SETTLEMENT OF THE ATLANTIC LION'S PAW SCALLOP, NODIPECTEN NODOSUS.

Abstract

Studies were carried out to determine the effect of four factors that may be important to optimize larval settlement of the scallop Nodipecien nodosus in a land-based nursery system: (1) ambient light (tanks were exposed to direct sunlight, kept in partial darkness, and kept in total darkness), (2) necessity for cleaning tanks (whether they should be cleaned daily or left untouched), (3) microalgal diet (ISO, Isochrrsis galbana + diatoms; PAV, Parlova lutheri + diatoms; and a mix, I. galbana + P. lutheri+ diatoms fed once or twice a day), and (4) whether broodstock conditioned with an astaxanthin-enriched diet increased settlement. Effects of ambient light did not affect settlement statistically; however, an increase in settlement of 25% was recorded between settlement in tanks kept in total darkness and those exposed to sunlight. Cleaning tanks affected shell height of spat, with larger spat occurrmg in tanks cleaned every day compared with tanks not cleaned (mean, 1,387.95 μm). Spat fed with a mix achieved the largest size (mean, 765.9 μm), followed by PAV (mean, 717.12 μm), then ISO (mean, 515.4 μm). A significantly greater shell height was found by feeding a mix twice a day. Larval settlement was accelerated when broodstock was fed the astaxanthin-enriched diet. We concluded that to optimize growth and settlement of N. nodosus larvae, broodstock should receive a supplement of astaxanthin during conditioning, settlement tanks should be exposed to sunlight and cleaned daily, and the spat should be fed with a mixed diet twice daily. 49. Phosphorus requirements for 60- to 100-kg pigs selected for high lean deposition under different thermal environments.

Abstract

Two experiments were conducted to determine the requirement of available P (aP) of pigs selected for high lean deposition during summer (maximum and minimum temperatures of 29.8 ± 3.6 and 21.3 ± 1.1°C, respectively; Exp. 1) and winter (maximum and minimum temperatures of 24.7 ± 2.1 and 9.1 ± 1.6°C, respectively; Exp. 2). Pigs (66.5 ± 2.8 kg, Exp. 1; and 61.1 ± 0.6 kg, Exp. 2) were randomly allotted to 5 dietary treatments. Exp. 1 had 5 pens/treatment and Exp. 2 had 6 pens/treatment, and all pens had 2 pigs. Treatments were composed of a corn-soybean meal basal diet and 4 diets with additional dicalcium phosphate to obtain 5 aP concentrations (0.122, 0.187, 0.252, 0.317, and 0.382% in Exp. 1, and 0.135, 0.200, 0.265, 0.330, and 0.395% in Exp. 2). Pigs were allowed ad libitum access to their respective diets for 30 d. In Exp. 1, increasing aP improved ADFI and ADG (quadratic, P < 0.05), with maximum responses obtained at 0.226 and 0.256% of aP, respectively. Increasing aP improved (P < 0.05) G:F. A broken-line analysis indicated that G:F was maximized (P < 0.05) at 0.295% of aP or 9.04 g of aP/d. Increasing aP also increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) P and Ca (g/kg) in the metacarpals with maximum responses obtained at 0.314 and 0.272% of aP, respectively. The percentage of ash in the metacarpals continued to increase (linear, P < 0.05) with increasing aP. In Exp. 2, ADG and G:F improved (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05) as aP increased in the diet. A broken-line analysis indicated that G:F was maximized (P < 0.05) at 0.316% of aP or 10.58 g of aP per day. However, increasing aP had no effect on ADFI. Percentages of ash, P, and Ca in the metacarpals increased (linear, P < 0.05) with increasing aP. In conclusion, results of this experiment indicated that finishing pigs (60 to 100 kg) kept in a thermoneutral environment require 0.316% aP in the diet (10.58 g/d) to maximize G:F, but the requirement is only 0.295% aP (9.04 g/d) when pigs are under heat stress.

50. Dose reconstruction of a Brazilian industrial gamma radiography partial-body overexposure case

Abstract

In May 2000, an operator of a 60Co industrial gamma radiography apparatus, during a routine service, was involved in a partial-body radiological accident, which caused serious injuries to his left hand. Dose reconstruction was started aiming to assess the radiation doses, in order to assist the medical staff in the evaluation and prescription of suitable medical procedures for the patient's treatment and follow-up. This work presents the dose reconstruction used for assessment of the distribution of doses on the patient's left hand, which was made using two methods: physical and computational techniques. For the first technique a physical hand simulator was built. The computational method was performed using microcomputer software for external dose calculations, named 'Visual Monte-Carlo-VMC', together with a hand voxel simulator. The values obtained through both methods for the distribution of absorbed doses on the operator's left hand were compared. About half of them were similar within a range of uncertainty of 20%.
