In diabetic ulcers, an increased secretion of human neutrophil elastase (HNE) and bacterial infections play crucial roles in hindering healing. Considering that, the present study proposed the development of multi-action polycaprolactone (PCL)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) electrospun fibers incorporating elastase-targeting peptides, AAPV and WAAPV, via blending. Characterization confirmed WAAPV's efficacy in regulating proteolytic enzymes by inhibiting HNE. The engineered fibers, particularly those containing PEG, exhibited optimal wettability but an accelerated degradation that was mitigated with the peptide's inclusion, thus promoting a sustained peptide release over 24 h. Peptide loading was verified indirectly through thermal stability and hydration capacity studies (hydrophobic bonding between PCL and WAAPV and hydrophilic affinities between PCL/PEG and AAPV) and determined at ≈51.1 µg/cm2 and ≈46.0 µg/cm2 for AAPV and ≈48.5 µg/cm2 and ≈51.3 µg/cm2 for WAAPV, respectively, for PCL and PCL/PEG. Both AAPV and WAAPV effectively inhibited HNE, with PEG potentially enhancing this effect by interacting with the peptides and generating detectable peptide–PEG complexes (≈10% inhibition with PCL + peptide fibers after 6 h of incubation, and ≈20% with PCL/PEG + peptide fibers after 4 h incubation). Peptide-loaded fibers demonstrated antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus (up to ≈78% inhibition) and Escherichia coli (up to ≈66% inhibition), with peak effectiveness observed after 4 and 2 h of incubation, respectively. Despite their potential as a sustainable source of soil nutrients and organic matter, waste organic residues are often discarded rather than utilized in agriculture. This review examines the current state‐of‐the‐art in the application of organic residues in agricultural production systems by analysing trends and results in published research conducted on their use for soil health and crop production purposes. For this, a bibliographic analysis was conducted on 81 papers collected from the Web of Science database. Our research shows a growing trend in the field, particularly in recent years, with articles from India, China and the United States at the forefront. The most commonly evaluated organic residues were compost, animal manure, crop residues, municipal solid waste and biochar. Soil pH, bulk density and especially organic matter/total organic carbon (TOC) were the chemical, physical and biological attributes most frequently evaluated, respectively. This review indicates that the application of organic residues improves soil health, positively affecting crop productivity in crops such as maize, wheat and rice. However, further research is needed to address the potential risk of soil contamination from potentially toxic metals (PTMs) associated with organic residues, as well as to identify best practices to guarantee food safety and environmental preservation. Syncope is defined as a transient loss of consciousness due to global cerebral hypoperfusion and is one of the leading causes of emergency department admission. The initial approach should focus on excluding non-syncopal causes for loss of consciousness and risk stratification for cardiac cause, in order to ensure an appropriate etiological investigation and therapeutic approach. Vasovagal syncope (VVS), the most common type of syncope, should be assumed once other causes are excluded. Pathophysiologically, the vasovagal reflex is the result of a paradoxical autonomic response, leading to hypotension and/or bradycardia. VVS has not been shown to affect mortality, but morbidity may be considerable in those with recurrent syncopal episodes. The management of VVS includes both non-pharmacological and pharmacological measures that act on various levels of the reflex arc that triggers the syncopal episode. However, most are of uncertain benefit given the scarcity of high-quality supporting evidence. Pacemaker therapy may be considered in recurrent refractory cardioinhibitory reflex syncope, for which it is currently considered a robust intervention, as noted in the European guidelines. Non-randomized and unblinded studies have shown a potential benefit of pacing in recurrent VVS, but double-blinded randomized controlled trials have not consistently demonstrated positive results. We performed a comprehensive review of the current literature and recent advances in cardiac pacing and pacing algorithms in VVS, and discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the complex patient with recurrent VVS and reduced quality of life., (Copyright © 2019 Sociedade Portuguesa de Cardiologia.
