Realizou-se estudo prospectivo com 648 crianças de zero a cinco anos no município da Raposa-MA, de julho/97 a junho/98, com o objetivo de avaliar as características da infecção por L.(L.)chagasi e verificar se existe associação entre desnutrição e infecção assintomática. Utilizou-se questionário com dados socioeconômicos, ambientais e hábitos de vida; realizou-se Intradermorreação de Montenegro(IDRM) com antígeno de L. amazonensis e Enzyme Linked Immunosorbant Assay(ELISA) para detectar infecção, e exame antropométrico. A prevalência inicial, final e incidência da infecção foram 18,6%, 20,6% e 10,8% pelo IDRM, e 13,5%, 34,4% e 28% pelo ELISA, respectivamente. A prevalência da desnutrição crônica (altura/idade) foi 26%. Não houve associação estatisticamente significante entre desnutrição e infecção assintomática por L. (L.) chagasi. A forma assintomática da doença está presente nas áreas estudadas, necessitando de medidas de controle mais efetivas.

Engineering plastics and metals have been extensively replaced by polypropylene (PP) based materials in automotive parts to achieve weight reductions and cost savings. To accomplish this, PP compounds that are made from PP and other components are under intense investigation. In this paper PP was blended with glass powder (from the automotive industry residue) to evaluate the mechanical, flow and thermal properties by using experimental design. The results showed that, in the analyzed conditions, the glass content and the screw speed did not have a significant effect on the mechanical and flow properties evaluated. However, the higher temperature profile used in this study produced composites with higher rigidity, without decreasing the impact strength of the composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Obesity is epidemic worldwide, and increases in cesarean delivery rates have occurred in parallel. Objective: This study aimed to determine whether cesarean delivery is a risk factor for obesity in adulthood in a birth cohort of Brazilian subjects. Design: We initiated a birth cohort study in Ribeirão Preto, southeastern Brazil, in 1978. A randomly selected sample of 2057 subjects from the original cohort was reassessed in 2002-2004. Type of delivery, birth weight, maternal smoking, and schooling were obtained after birth. The following data from subjects were collected at 23-25 y of age: body mass index (BMI; in kg/m²), physical activity, smoking, and income. Obesity was defined as a BMI ≥30. A Poisson multivariable model was performed to determine the association between cesarean delivery and BMI. Results: The obesity rate in adults born by cesarean delivery was 15.2% and in those born by vaginal delivery was 10.4% (P = 0.002). Adults born by cesarean delivery had an increased risk (prevalence ratio: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.23, 2.02) of obesity at adulthood after adjustments. Conclusion: We hypothesize that increasing rates of cesarean delivery may play a role in the obesity epidemic worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our aim was to determine whether food insecurity was associated with a higher prevalence of obesity in a large random sample of Brazilian women of reproductive age. The data were derived from the 3rd edition of the Children's and Women's National Demographic and Health Survey conducted in 2006-07. This was a nationally representative cross-sectional study. Obesity (BMI ⩾ 30 kg/m2) was the outcome variable. Associations were measured using crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) with 95% Cl through Poisson regression models taking into account the complex sampling design. The sample included 1 0,226 women from 18 to 45 y of age. The prevalence of any level of food insecurity measured by the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale was 409%, with 25.5% light, 10.1% mild, and 5.3% severe food insecurities. The prevalence of obesity was 17.4%. We found a borderline effect of light food insecurity and increased prevalence of obesity in Brazil (PR = 116; 95% Cl = 0.98-1.38; P= 0.08). Women with mild food insecurity had a higher risk of being obese than their food-secure counterparts (PR = 1.49; 95% Cl = 1.17-1.90; P = 0.010) after adjustment for skin color/ethnicity, years of schooling, geographical region, income, age, and marital status. In conclusion, this study suggests that mild but not light or severe food insecurity was associated with obesity as assessed by BMI, even after adjusting for various confounding factors in this large cross-sectional survey performed in a middle-income country undergoing the nutrition transition. Objective: To analyze the effect of height catch-up at school age on the bone mass of adolescents of a Brazilian birth cohort., Methods: A cohort study using data obtained from the three moments (birth, 7/9 years and 18/19 years of age) of the Cohorts-RPS study. Height catch-up was defined based on the difference between the schoolchild's z-score and birth z-score. The adolescents' bone mineral mass was analyzed using the z-score index for the lumbar spine measured by dual emission X-ray absorptiometry. A theoretical model was developed for the proposed analysis using directed acyclic graphs paired through the nearest-neighbor matching propensity score using the STATA software, version 14.0. The level of significance was set at 5%., Results: Of the 297 studied children, 24.5% achieved height catch-up. The bone mass below the expected for age was observed in 5.39% of the subjects. The mean lumbar spine z-score was -0.34 (±1.01). After the adjustment, no effect was observed between height catch-up at school age and bone mass in adolescents (Coeff=0.598; 95% CI -0.117 to 1.313; p=0.101)., Conclusion: Even using the directed acyclic graphs and the causal inference method by adjusting the propensity score, the height catch-up did not seem to affect bone mass in adolescents, a result perhaps related to the sample size., (Copyright © 2018 Sociedade Brasileira de Pediatria. The consequences of alcohol use are closely related to its pattern of intake. The aim of this study is to analyze the pattern of alcohol use by doctors and nurses. Associated co-factors have also been considered. We calculated a representative sample of doctors and nurses from two hospitals in Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was employed to assess patterns of alcohol consumption. A score ≥8 was defined as alcohol misuse, and an answer to question number 3 > 1 was indicative of heavy episodic drinking (HED). In order to identify factors associated with HED and alcohol misuse, bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed with SPSS v20.0. A sample of 510 professionals was examined and 25% of those were abstainers; among those who had drinks containing alcohol, 86% were classified as low-risk alcohol use, scoring lower than 8, while 10.6% of the whole sample was categorized as alcohol misusers, scoring more than 8. The habit of smoking (OR = 6.02; CI: 1.71-21.16), following the Catholic religion (OR = 3.55; CI: 2.47-8.58), and also gender (OR = 3.09; CI: 1.68-5.71) were independently associated with alcohol misuse. HED was found in 14.3%. Younger age (OR = 0.96; CI: 0.92-0.98), male gender (OR = 5.13; CI: 2.55-10.30), the Catholic religion (OR = 3.22; CI: 1.44-7.21), and smoking habits (OR = 5.25; CI: 1.26-21.75) were associated with HED. Therefore, physicians and nurses have a lesser prevalence of abstainers, similar rates of alcohol misuse, and greater prevalence of HED when compared to the general Brazilian adult population. Background: We tried to explain why a marked decrease in birthweight of 122 g occurred over a 15-year period in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil., Methods: Factors reflecting biological, social, and health care characteristics (infant gender, parity, maternal age, marital status, type of hospital, maternal smoking, preterm birth, small for gestational age [SGA], and prenatal care) were assessed on 6711 newborns in 1978/1979 and 2838 in 1994 using multiple linear regressions., Results: The birthweight distribution shifted to the left and the residual distribution of small preterm babies increased from 1.9% to 3.4%. Only marital status and preterm delivery would have decreased the difference in birthweight over time, explaining for each of them around 30 g of the 122 g. Increasing levels of attendance at antenatal care over time might have decreased the birthweight difference by 40 g. Maternal age and SGA explained little of the decreasing trend. Reductions in maternal smoking would have increased mean birthweight slightly. In stratified analysis the downward trend was more marked among mothers with high education (-202 g) and those delivered by caesarean section (-194 g). After adjusting for all those significant variables mean birthweight was still 74 g (95% CI: -97, -50 g) lower in 1994 than in 1978/1979., Conclusion: The trend could be explained in part by factors related to marital status that might reflect dysfunctional families in the Brazilian context and the preterm increase that might be associated with advances in medical technology. The high attendance at antenatal clinics or factors associated with it might have prevented a further decrease in birthweight. Our results may be compatible with the high economic development of Ribeirão Preto within Brazil, together with factors associated with its unfavourable lifestyle.
