10. Real-Time Incident-Responsive Signal Control Strategy under Partially Connected Vehicle Environment

Abstract

The performance of the traffic system can drastically drop when nonrecurrent congestion caused by incidents occurs. Early detection and clearing of traffic incidents will enable the mitigation of the congestion and early restoration of normal traffic conditions. The research in this paper utilized the vehicle information from the recent technological advancement in transportation systems, connected vehicles (CV), and loop-detector information for nonconnected vehicles (NCVs) and developed a novel algorithm to (1) control traffic signals for normal traffic conditions in the absence of incidents, (2) detect traffic incidents using CV/NCV information, and (3) control traffic signals during the occurrence and dissipation of incidents. All the 3 strategies were integrated into one algorithm, which runs as per the real-time traffic conditions, in the presence or absence of incidents. Space-mean speeds of the vehicles on nonincident lanes and throughput maximization criteria were taken as the indicators for the activation of specific signal timings directed at the incident-affected approach. Diverse incident scenarios were tested on a four-legged isolated intersection using the VISSIM simulation tool. Incident detection results showed a higher detection rate and lower mean detection time at higher CV penetration and higher traffic volumes, and at the incident locations nearer to the stop-line. The proposed incident-responsive signal control strategy at 40% and higher CV penetration showed better performance over EPICS adaptive signal control solution, in reducing average travel time delay and the average number of stops per vehicle., Author(s): Kancharla K. 26. Advances in Pyridyl-Based Fluorophores for Sensing Applications

Abstract

Fluorescence sensing plays an important role in high sensitivity, selectivity, and real-time monitoring of biological and environmentally relevant species. Several classes of fluorescent dyes (fluorophores) including rhodamine, BODIPY, 1,8-naphthalimide, and coumarin-among others−when conveniently functionalized with reactive pyridyl receptors, have emerged as effective sensors to detect and quantify chemical species with high accuracy through fluorescent imaging and spectroscopy. Among the sensing targets, monitoring of harmful chemical species, e.g., metal ions (zinc, copper, iron, mercury, cadmium, lead, etc.) and anions (chloride, fluoride, sulfide, thiocyanate, etc.) can be used to understand their physiological and pathological role in live-cells and tissues, as well as to protect human health. This chapter focuses on recent advances in the molecular design of pyridyl-substituted fluorophores, their photophysical properties, and sensing applications.

Abstract

Due to its characteristics, fresh fish is a highly perishable food with a very short shelf-life under refrigeration. Several methods have been introduced to slow down its deterioration, such as by means of oxygen depletion of the food package (vacuum packaging), or by changing the natural atmosphere that is in contact with the fresh fish (modified atmosphere packaging), or by the use of chemicals generally recognized as safe: such compounds can be directly applied (by dipping or spraying) or incorporated into packaging materials and slowly migrate to the product, exerting a hurdle effect against microbial development and lipid oxidation (active packaging). This review aims to cover the most recent advances in chemical-based approaches for fresh fish preservation, applied either singly or in combination. Vacuum packaging, modified atmosphere, and active packaging preservation methodologies are presented, along with the inclusion of chemical additives, such as organic acids and natural extracts, and their combination with icing systems. Advantages and disadvantages of these methodologies and their impact on fresh fish quality and shelf-life are discussed, reaching the conclusion that both are positively influenced overall. Indeed, the contribution of chemical-based strategies for fresh fish preservation is undeniable, and is expected to be a research topic of increasing interest in the future.

Abstract

An efficient strategy to develop porous materials with potential for NO2 sensing was based in the preparation of a metal-organic framework (MOF), UiO-66(Hf), modified with a very small amount of meso-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) N-methylpyrrolidine-fused chlorin (TCPC), TCPC@MOF. Chlorin's incorporation into the UiO-66(Hf) framework was verified by several characterization methods and revealed that the as-synthesized TCPC@MOF brings together the chemical stability of UiO-66(Hf) and the photophysical properties of the pyrrolidine-fused chlorin which is about five times more emissive than the porphyrin counterpart. TCPC@MOF was further incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and the resulting TCPC@MOF@PDMS film was tested in NO2 gas sensing. It showed notable sensitivity as well as a fast response in the range between 0.5 and 500 ppm where an emission intensity quenching is observed up to 96% for 500 ppm. This is a rare example of a chlorin-derivative used for gas-sensing applications through emission changes, and an unusual case of this type of optical-sensing composites of NO2.
