4. Fighting to fight : female amateur boxers' experiences of (in)equality in the UK

Abstract

In the UK context women have been participating in boxing, traditionally considered as a masculine arena, for centuries. Over time, there have been advancements in the inclusion of women in the sport. Nevertheless, boxing remains a hypermasculine, male-dominated sport. Moreover, boxing does not offer the conditions necessary for women to fully participate and to do so with parity of esteem. Consequently, women are largely discriminated against on the grounds of gender. Aiming to investigate the challenges boxing faces in working towards becoming an egalitarian sport, I conducted feminist qualitative research focused on the participation of women in amateur boxing in the UK context. In order to collect data, I used ethnographic methods consisting of participant observation and semi-structured in- depth interviews. The participant observation took place in a boxing academy in the North of England between September 2017 and April 2018. Most of the thirty-two interviewees were members of the boxing community in which participant observation was conducted; however, I also interviewed ex-boxers, staff of sports bodies, coaches, coach educators, and boxers across the country. The findings suggest that equality has yet to be achieved in boxing. The thesis identifies obstacles that hinder equality within the sport. Among them are the construction of boxing as a masculine and male-dominated sport, the discrimination women experience within the sport and the prevalence of androcentric, neoliberal, and postfeminist narratives celebrating individualism, neglecting inequality, and equating the presence of women to equality. Thus, it concludes that the presence of female pugilists has largely been accommodated within existing gendered power structures, rather than, as yet at least, provoking a more radical paradigmatic shift. If boxing aims to be a sport for all, inequalities must be tackled, otherwise equality is a chimera.

6. An update on female sizes and body condition of nesting olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) in La Escobilla Beach Sanctuary, Mexico.

Abstract

Body condition (BC) can affect the reproductive output and hatchling survival of nesting olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea). However, little is known about the BC of nesting females during the arrival event at nesting sites. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the BC of females nesting in La Escobilla Beach Sanctuary (La Escobilla) during the 2021 nesting season. Nesting females were measured and weighed. The mean size for nesting L. olivacea was 60.41 ± 2.98 cm for straight carapace length, 52.69 ± 2.57 cm for straight carapace width, and 34.35 ± 3.94 kg for weight (n = 483). The mean (± standard deviation, SD) Fulton's/Bjorndal BC index estimated for nesting females was 1.54 ± 0.15, while the mean (± SD) of body mass index was 2.18 ± 0.23. Based on these indexes, 28 individuals were classified as in bad condition, 315 in good condition, and 19 in excellent condition. This first estimation of the olive ridley turtle body condition in a nesting colony showed that BC is a good body condition for most nesting females in La Escobilla. Abstract

Knowledge about food resources consumption by a species is of fundamental interest, even more when it happens in anthropized environments. In this note we report the consumption of the seed of the tree Lluvia de Oro (Cassia fistula) by the grey squirrel (Echinosciurus aureogaster) within a suburban area of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico. This is the record of a new diet feeding item of E. auroegaster from an exotic tree species whose availability is low, opening the possibility of carrying out ecological studies on the relative importance of C. fistula as a food resource in man-modified environments., El conocimiento acerca del consumo de los recursos alimenticios por parte de una especie es de fundamental interés, más aún cuando ocurre en ambientes antropizados. En esta nota reportamos el consumo de la semilla del árbol Lluvia de Oro (Cassia fistula) por la ardilla gris (Sciurus aureogaster) dentro de un área suburbana de la ciudad de Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, México. Este constituye el registro de un nuevo ítem en la dieta de S. auroegaster a partir de una especie arbórea exótica cuya disponibilidad es baja, abriendo la posibilidad de realizar estudios ecológicos sobre la importancia relativa de C. fistula como recurso alimenticio en ambientes modificados por el hombre.

Abstract

[ES] Uno de los principios rectores de la política social es: “garantizar la seguridad y salud laboral”. Conduciendo este mismo al desarrollo de políticas de protección que velen por el bienestar de cada trabajador, basadas en una variedad de medidas preventivas para cada riesgo asociado a su trabajo. Este proyecto compara las normas de salud y seguridad laboral entre los países de España (perteneciente a la Unión Europea) y Nicaragua, (perteneciente a la región latinoamericana de América Central). De esta forma, es posible realizar un estudio legal para estudiar el aporte directo y único de cada país de forma generalizada en materia de prevención de riesgos laborales y de una forma más detallada en el sector de la construcción. La redacción de la presente memoria, tendrá su estructura básica dividida en dos etapas: En la primera, habrá subapartados en los que se realizará una comparativa legal, analizando aspectos y conceptos generales relacionados a la prevención de riesgos laborales y otras normas secundarias que sustentan la prevención de riesgos en ambos países. En la segunda etapa se examinarán las leyes a nivel organizativo incluyendo descripciones detalladas de ambos territorios referentes a organismos, métodos preventivos, relacionados de forma específica al marco de la construcción.

Abstract

Screening of serum and fecal samples from huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) and pudu (Pudu puda) from southern Chile for Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (MAP) found all but four samples Mycobacterium-negative. The positive sequences showed only 92-93% similarity with MAP and were from remote Isla Riesco populations.

Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of finding the relationships between the variables Cleanliness (CLL) and Brand Equity (BEQ) in relation to Brand Experience (BE), Customer Well-Being (CWB) and Customer Satisfaction (CS) within the restaurant sector. The study population consisted of people who have eaten on the premises in restaurants in Peru during the last six months of the year 2021. The sample consisted of 416 people. A PLS-SEM analysis was used using SmartPLS 3 software in order to respond to the hypotheses set out in the study. The results allowed all the hypotheses to be tested, highlighting the confirmation of the influence of Cleanliness and Brand Equity on Customer Well-being in building Brand Experience and Customer Satisfaction in the restaurant sector.
