Background: The study of notable people as advocates for raising cancer awareness began in the latter decades of the 20th century. This research aimed to identify Pan-American notable people with head and neck cancer (HNC) and to explore senior health professionals perspectives on communicating stories of notable patients with HNC to promote prevention. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using an online questionnaire designed in REDCap and administered to 32 senior health professionals with long-standing academic and clinical backgrounds in HNC. In addition, a structured literature review was performed on PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, LILACS, and gray literature. Results: 18 notable figures were successfully identified from the survey, and 24 from the literature review. These individuals came from the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, El Salvador, Chile, Colombia, and Peru, and were recognized primarily for their performances as actors, artists, musicians, and athletes. The professionals outlooks were positive, with 31 (96.9%) agreeing that disseminating these stories can contribute to reducing risk behaviors. Furthermore, all participants (100%) agreed that such stories can promote early detection of HNC, primarily through social media, followed by the internet, and television. Conclusions: The study identified notable individuals and gathered positive perspectives from professionals. Our results suggest that notable people could serve as potential advocates for HNC prevention. Further research is warranted to explore the potential of this prevention strategy.

There is growing interest in applying gamification to adaptive learning systems to motivate and engage students during the learning process. However, previous studies have reported unexpected results about student outcomes in these systems. One of the causes of these unfavorable effects is the lack of monitoring and adaptation of gamification design when students do not achieve the expected objectives during the learning process. Based on this, this paper explores twenty design concepts to enable teachers to monitor and adapt the gamification design of adaptive learning systems. This research uses the speed dating method with fifteen teachers to validate these concepts in a consistent way with the "gamification analytics model for teachers." According to this model, teachers can define interaction goals, monitor students' interaction with learning resources and gamification elements, and adapt the gamification design by creating missions to help students achieve defined interaction goals. The results of this research indicate that teachers found it valuable and relevant to visualize students' interaction with gamification elements, such as missions and levels, to help them understand their students' status. In contrast, they poorly evaluated the visualization of students' interaction with the trophies. Teachers also highly considered creating customized missions for a student or a specific group to help students engage and achieve the desired learning goals. The teachers' opinions on the design concepts provide relevant insights to support them in the monitoring and adaptation phases of gamification in adaptive educational systems.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with deficits in communication, social interaction, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. Due to these restrictions, one can cite the literacy process as a learning problem for people with autism. Although psychological interventions have been used to mitigate this problem, technology plays an essential role in this public. Recent studies show that children with autism demonstrate interest and best performance results when in contact with technology. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to find studies that gather technological approaches to help the improvement of literacy skills. Based on this premise, this work focus on identifying technological approaches used to aid in the literacy process of children with autism. To achieve our goal, we conducted a systematic mapping where six studies were analyzed to answer our research questions. We identified several computational contributions, like software, desktop, and web applications that benefit the enhancement of the learning process of children with autism.

Recent studies are increasingly using brain-imaging techniques in the technology-enhanced learning (TEL) context to understand students' cognitive processes during technology-assisted learning, with the ultimate goal to improve students' outcomes in these environments. Given the importance of the promising impact of brain-imaging techniques in the technology-enhanced learning context, it is of utmost importance to analyze and investigate studies published in the intersection of these research areas. However, despite the growing interest in this promising research field, there is a lack of systematic literature review investigating how brain-imaging techniques have been applied in technology-enhanced learning environments. Therefore, this article presents a systematic literature review (SLR) using a well-accepted guideline to perform a rigorous study of the current literature to investigate, analyze, and understand how brain-imaging techniques have been applied in technology-enhanced learning contexts. This SLR considered studies published in nine academic databases that resulted in a total of 3910 studies that, after the selection process, were reduced to 37 studies (published during 2001-2019) for the final analysis. The studies' content analysis was used to classify the studies according to their objectives, brain-imaging techniques and devices used, educational levels, study domains, and studies outcomes. The main results indicate that (i) most studies aim to use brain-imaging methods to measure/detect students' psychological processes while using educational technology to provide a personalized experience, (ii) the most used brain-imaging technique in the studies is electroencephalogram, and (iii) the most investigated study domain was Mathematics and Biology. Moreover, this article highlights some gaps found in the state-of-the-art and provides insights that can be used for future research.

Linear verrucous epidermal nevi (LVEN) are characterized by verrucous papules often coalescing into well-demarcated skin-colored or brown plaques following the lines of Blaschko. We present two new cases of LVEN with oral mucosa involvement and briefly discuss this very rare finding. In both cases, oral biopsies showed hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, and papillomatosis. Although several treatment modalities have been reported for the cutaneous lesions, there is no consensus for the management of oral lesions so far.

To assess the clinical scenarios in which nerve blocks are employed in the context of burning mouth syndrome (BMS). This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR. A protocol was generated on Open Science Framework. Electronic searches were performed in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, LILACS, and Cochrane, in addition to the grey literature and citations from Grémeau-Richard et al. (2010). Nerve blocks were used for treatment purposes in all cases. The mandibular nerve and the stellate ganglion were both blocked in 50% studies, while the maxillary nerve and lingual nerve were blocked in 25% study each. The anesthetics used were lidocaine (50%) and bupivacaine (50%). Relief was generally reported after immediate block, and at a mean follow-up of 4.5 weeks, there was considerable improvement compared to the initial conditions when the mandibular and/or maxillary nerve were targeted. The use of nerve blocks has been employed in the treatment of patients with refractory BMS. Clinical studies with standardized methodology are necessary to validate and understand the potential role of mandibular and maxillary nerve block in this setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Quest for Orthologs (QfO) is an open collaboration framework for experts in comparative phylogenomics and related research areas who have an interest in highly accurate orthology predictions and their applications. We here report highlights and discussion points from the QfO meeting 2015 held in Barcelona. Achievements in recent years have established a basis to support developments for improved orthology prediction and to explore new approaches. Central to the QfO effort is proper benchmarking of methods and services, as well as design of standardized datasets and standardized formats to allow sharing and comparison of results. Simultaneously, analysis pipelines have been improved, evaluated and adapted to handle large datasets. All this would not have occurred without the long-term collaboration of Consortium members. Meeting regularly to review and coordinate complementary activities from a broad spectrum of innovative researchers clearly benefits the community. Highlights of the meeting include addressing sources of and legitimacy of disagreements between orthology calls, the context dependency of orthology definitions, special challenges encountered when analyzing very anciently rooted orthologies, orthology in the light of whole-genome duplications, and the concept of orthologous versus paralogous relationships at different levels, including domain-level orthology. Furthermore, particular needs for different applications (e.g. plant genomics, ancient gene families and others) and the infrastructure for making orthology inferences available (e.g. interfaces with model organism databases) were discussed, with several ongoing efforts that are expected to be reported on during the upcoming 2017 QfO meeting.

This study utilized bibliometric methodologies to explore the body of research presented at the World Workshop on Oral Medicine (WWOM) over the past 35 years. A systematic tracking of articles across 8 editions of WWOM was conducted using databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. Comprehensive bibliographic analysis and data visualization were executed through Bibliometrix, Rstudio, and VOSviewer, facilitating an in-depth examination of citation metrics and collaborative networks. The investigation revealed that WWOM, held in 6 cities spanning four countries and addressing 33 distinct topics, demonstrated an annual citation growth rate of 8.29%, with an average of 49.31 citations per article. Notably, WWOM IV garnered the highest number of citations (1,342), reaching its peak in 2021 with 365 citations. Key contributors to the most-cited articles include Al-Hashimi, Dawes, and Syrjänen et al. Since its inception, the workshops have engaged 505 faculty members from 37 nations, with significant participation from the Americas and Europe, notably the United States and the United Kingdom, which also led in terms of publications. Network analysis delineated 6 country clusters, underscoring robust connections between the US and the UK. Co-authorship analysis revealed 18 clusters involving 267 authors. The influence of the WWOM on the field of oral medicine is clearly demonstrated by the outcomes of its publications, reflecting a collaborative effort to enhance comprehension and treatment modalities for patients with oral diseases. This article aims to explore the integration of ChatGPT, an advanced conversational artificial intelligence model, in the field of dentistry. The review primarily consists of information related to the capabilities and functionalities of ChatGPT and how these abilities can aid dental professionals. This study includes data from research papers, case studies, and relevant literature on language models, as well as papers on dentistry, patient communication, dental education, and clinical decision-making. A systematic approach was used to select relevant studies and literature. The selection criteria focused on papers that specifically discussed the integration of language models, ChatGPT in particular, in dentistry and their applications. The study findings revealed that ChatGPT has significant potential to revolutionize dentistry by offering various applications and benefits. It can enhance patient engagement and understanding through personalized oral health information and guidance. In dental education, ChatGPT can provide interactive learning, case studies, and virtual patient simulations. ChatGPT can also assist researchers in analyzing dental literature, identifying patterns, and generating insights. Moreover, it supports dentists with evidence-based recommendations, treatment options, and diagnostic support. Integrating ChatGPT in dentistry can be highly beneficial, but it is crucial to address ethical considerations, accuracy, and privacy concerns. To analyze the frequency of sequential oral squamous cell carcinomas (s-OSCC), preceded by oral potentially malignant disorders, and OSCC de novo (OSCC-dn) and explore differences in their clinicopathologic presentations. A structured electronic search strategy identified studies that analyzed frequency, clinical, biological, demographic, biomarkers, and prognostic features of s-OSCC and OSCC-dn according to PRISMA guidelines in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, up to January 31, 2023. Inclusion criteria were original English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and German cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control studies. The quality of studies was assessed using the Agency for Research and Health Quality tool and the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale tool. The final selection included 40 studies. OSCC-dn and s-OSCC represent, respectively, 71% and 29% of cases of OSCC (P =.00), showing a higher percentage of T1 or of T1+T2 in s-OSCC (P <.0001). The association meta-analysis showed OSCC-dn with a significant association. The meta-analysis showed that s-OSCC was significantly associated with smaller tumor size, absence of distant metastases, relapses, male sex, and tumor sites different from tongue; and OSCC-dn was associated with more advanced tumor size, more regional and distant metastases, more advanced stages, and worse survival. S-OSCC was less frequent than expected. OSCC-dn seems to have specific clinical, biological, and prognostic features. Future perspectives on oral cancer prevention should address novel approaches and alternatives to screening, such as urgent referral of OSCC-dn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
