Introduction: Vocal fatigue is a clinical manifestation associated with a perception of negative vocal adjustment. It is related to the increase in the sensation of excessive effort when speaking and the lack of conditioning of the muscles and structures that involve vocal production. Because it has a complex and multifactorial diagnosis, there is still no consensus on the symptoms most commonly found in this clinical condition., Objective: To review and analyze the symptoms that characterize the clinical condition of vocal fatigue., Methods: This study consists of a scoping review carried out in the Cochrane Library, Embase, Lilacs, and Medline databases. Observational studies or clinical trials from the last 10 years. Studies with participants younger than 18 years of age were excluded; as well as research that did not describe symptoms of vocal fatigue or that presented vocal fatigue as a symptom; studies with patients with neurological, psychiatric, syndromic conditions, or head and neck cancer. The Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies NHLBI-NIH scale was used to assess the methodological quality of selected observational studies and the PEDro scale for the analysis of experimental studies. The steps were performed by three blinded evaluators. Subsequently, meta-analyses of global means were executed for each factor under study; a comparison of the difference in the mean score for each factor between exposed and unexposed; a comparison of the difference in the average score, among non-professional voice users, for each factor between exposed and unexposed., Results: In the searches performed, 956 articles were found and 29 articles were selected according to the eligibility criteria. Of these, 93.11% of the studies were observational and 6.89% were clinical trials. Regarding the gender and age group of the study samples, women aged between 30 and 45 years were predominant. As for the occupational use of voice, 68.97% of the samples were composed of professional voice users and 31.03% of non-professional voice users, with most professional voice users being teachers and non-professional voice users, individuals with dysphonia or vocal complaint. To assess vocal fatigue symptoms, 28 studies used the Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI) protocol, and only one study used another assessment protocol, Self-Administered Voice Rating. All studies were classified as regular, according to the scale used. As for the meta-analyses performed, the mean scores of the VFI factors were higher among professional voice users when compared to non-professional voice users and higher in dysphonic individuals compared to non-dysphonic individuals., Conclusion: The vocal fatigue symptoms found in this review were common in the populations of professional voice users and non-professional voice users and dysphonic and non-dysphonic individuals. Objective: To evaluate the effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) with and without tongue trills in women with vocal nodules., Study Design: Randomized, prospective, comparative intra-subject study., Methods: A total of 60 women aged 18-55 years were included. Visual-perceptual assessment of laryngeal configuration, auditory-perceptual assessment of voice quality, acoustic analyses, and self-assessment of phonation effort were assessed after TENS. Sixty participants participants were randomized into two experimental groups: (1) subjects receiving TENS (EG1), (2) subjects receiving TENS plus tongue trills (EG2). The control group was composed of 15 subjects of EG1 and 15 subjects of EG2. The TENS condition involved electrostimulation for 20 minutes. Audio and video perceptual assessments were performed by three speech therapists with expertise in voice; all were blinded to the experimental conditions. The acoustic parameters included were fundamental frequency, jitter, and shimmer during sustained phonation. Subjects also reported the degree of vocal effort before and after TENS., Results: TENS applied alone or combined with tongue trills aided in glottal closure and in improved comfort during phonation. When the TENS was administered with tongue trills, roughness of voice quality improved., Conclusion: TENS applied alone or combined with tongue trills was associated with improved glottal closure and phonation comfort. Purpose: To determine the cut-off values of different degrees of vocal roughness and breathiness in an analogical visual scale, from a numerical scale., Methods: We selected 150 voices from both genders, with quality ranging from neutrality to intense deviations, and predominance of breathiness or roughness. The auditory-perceptual assessment through two scales: 100-mm analogical visual scales and 4-point numerical scale. Intra and interrater reliability of auditory-perceptual ratings was analyzed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient. The cut-off values for graduation of roughness and breathiness voices were determinate using the analysis of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, which is based on the sensitivity, specificity and efficiency., Results: The intra and interrater reliability of auditory-perceptual ratings was excellent on both scales. The cut-off values (mm) in the analogical visual scale, from the numeric scale, indicated a roughness distribution: 0-8.5 absence of the parameter; 8.5- 28.5 mild presence; 28.5- 59.5 moderate and 59.5- 100 intense. For breathiness, the distribution was: 0-8.5 absence of the parameter; 8.5-33.5 for mild presence; 33.5-52.5 moderate and 52.5-100 intense., Conclusion: The cut-off values found for the analogical visual scale conclude that the numerical scale zero, which represents the absence of parameter, corresponds to a small range of scores in the analogical visual scale. Furthermore, the third degree of the numerical scale corresponded to a wide range of the analogical visual scale.

Research has reported on the use of soundfield amplification devices in the classroom. However, no study has used standardized tests to determine the potential advantages of the dynamic soundfield system for normally hearing students and for the teacher's voice. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of using dynamic soundfield system on the noise of the classroom, teacher's voice and students' academic performance. This was a prospective cohort study in which 20 student participants enrolled in the third year of basic education were divided into two groups (i.e., control and experimental); their teacher participated. The experimental group was exposed to the dynamic soundfield system for 3 consecutive months. The groups were assessed using standardized tests to evaluate their academic performance. Further, questionnaires and statements were collected on the participants' experience of using the soundfield system. We statistically analyzed the results to compare the academic performance of the control group with that of the experimental group. In all cases, a significance level of P < .05 was adopted. Use of the dynamic soundfield system was effective for improving the students' academic performance on standardized tests for reading, improving the teacher's speech intelligibility, and reducing the teacher's vocal strain. The dynamic soundfield system minimizes the impact of noise in the classroom as demonstrated by the mensuration of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and pupil performance on standardized tests for reading and student and teacher ratings of amplification system effectiveness.

Unlabelled: To study mastication and swallowing disorders in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD)., Objective: To investigate mastication and swallowing disorders in patients with severe TMD referred to surgery., Materials and Methods: Clinical and experimental study involving ten individuals with TMD submitted to deglutition videofluoroscopy. These patients did not have posterior teeth, mastication pain and food replacement in favor of pasty consistence food. The assessment of the oral and pharyngeal phases approached the following aspects: side of onset and preferential side for chewing, premature escape, remains of food residues in the oral cavity or in the pharyngeal recesses, number of necessary swallowing efforts, laryngeal penetration and/or tracheal aspiration., Results: During mastication and the oral phase we observed tongue compensatory movements upon chewing (n = 7; 70%), premature escape (n = 4; 40%), food remains in the cavity after swallowing (n = 5; 50%) and an excessive number of deglutition efforts (n = 5; 50%). On the pharyngeal phase we observed food remains in the valleculae (n = 6; 60%), in the pyriform sinuses (n = 4; 40%); laryngeal penetration (n = 1; 10%) and tracheal aspiration (n = 4; 40%)., Conclusion: TMD patients may have alterations in their chewing and swallowing patterns, with laryngeal penetration and/or tracheal aspiration. The study indicates the need for a multidisciplinary assessment because of dysphagia in TMD patients.

Purpose: To evaluate the pattern of activation of the masticatory muscles in dysphonic women., Methods: Seventeen women was divided into two groups: experimental group with 10 dysphonic women (33.6 +/- 8.0) and control group with 7 healthy women (25 +/- 5,19). The Electromyography exam of the left (LM) and right (RM) masseter muscles, anterior portion of the right (RT) and left (LT) temporal, and suprahyoid (SH) was performed by using electrodes of simple distinguishing surface., Results: With the mandible postural position at rest, all the muscles presented increased electromyography activity compared to the control group (p < 0.05). As for the mandible elevator muscles, the RM experimental group presented significantly decreased electromyography activity (p < 0, 05) and the SH increased (p < 0.05) compared to the control group. For the rest of the muscles, there was no significantly difference between the groups. It was verified that the experimental group presented higher co-contraction of the mandible depressed muscles in relation to contraction of the RT LT, RM and LM, as compared to the control group (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Dysphonic women present alteration of the activation patterns of the masticatory muscles.

Background: studies indicate correlation between dysphonia and muscle tension., Aim: to evaluate bilaterally the electrical activity of the suprahyoid muscles (SH), sternocleidomastoid (SCM), and trapezius (T), the presence of pain and the voice, after applying transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)., Method: ten (10) women with nodules or bilateral mucus thickening, and phonation fissure. Volunteers were submitted to 10 TENS sessions (200 micros and 10 Hz) for 30 minutes. Pain was evaluated using an analogical visual scale; the voice was evaluated through laryngoscopy and through a perceptive-auditory and acoustic analysis; and the myoelectric signal was converted using the Root Media Square (RMS). Voice and EMG data gathering was performed during the production of the E/vowel and during spontaneous speech (SS)., Statistical Analysis: Shapiro-Wilk Test followed by the Wilcoxon Test, or t Student, or Friedman Test (p < 0.05)., Results: It was observed that the TENS decreased the RMS readings, pre and pos treatment, for the Right T (RT) (2.80 +/- 1.36 to 1.77 +/- 0.93), the Left T (LT) (3.62 +/- 2.10 to 2.10 +/- 1.06), the Left SCM (LSCM) (2.64 +/- 0.69 to 1.94 +/- 0.95), and the SH (11.59 +/- 7.72 to 7.82 +/- 5.95) during the production of the E/vowel; and for the RT (3.56 +/- 2.77 to 1.93 +/- 1.13), the LT (4.68 +/- 2.56 to 3.09 +/- 2.31), the Right SCM (RSCM) (3.94 +/- 2.04 to 2.51 +/- 1.87), and the LSCM (3.54 +/- 1.04 to 3.12 +/- 3.00) during SS. A relieve in pain was also observed. Regarding the voice analysis, there was a decrease in level of laryngeal injuries; no difference was observed during the production of the E/vowel in the perceptive-auditory analysis; there was a decrease in the level of dysphonia and hoarseness during SS., Conclusion: TENS is effective in improving the clinical and functional signs of dysphonic women.
