PurposeThis paper aims to study the differing pathways to loneliness in managers and their employees. Literature on emotions in organizational life, organizational management and leadership and loneliness are explored to develop and test hypotheses regarding the differential prototypical scripts that can be generative of loneliness in managers and employees.Design/methodology/approachA total of 28 managers and 235 employees from a horticultural company based in Mexico were surveyed, using measures of perceived connection quality, loneliness and meaningful work to test three hypotheses.FindingsData from 28 managers and 235 staff indicate that while loneliness scores do not significantly differ between managers and their subordinates, the predictors of loneliness differ between managers and employees, with emotional connection and mutuality predicting loneliness in employees but not in managers.Originality/valueThis paper adds specification to the literatures on workplace loneliness, the loneliness associated with management roles, emotions in organizational life and emotions and leadership. The findings are discussed in relation to the literature on manager-subordinate relationships.

International audience; Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) is a new standard for multi-hop 5G networks. It allows to use cellular frequencies for both backhaul and access purposes. Furthermore, wireless backhauling reduces deployment costs for cellular network densification compared to fiber. However, the fact millimeter Wave (mmWave) frequencies have shorter range and considering the additional interference from backhaul links, the deployement of such a solution is a complicated issue. In our vision, a solution for frequency allocation using a graph coloring approach is key in improving performance. In this paper, we propose a semicentralized algorithm where the IAB-Donor computes the pairs of interfering nodes in the network to determine conflicting frequency usage. Nodes are then allocated specific bands and can locally adjust them to communicate with their children. Simulation results show that the proposed solution is more than 50% efficient in terms of throughput compared to a centralized allocation by link coloring.

The fundamental nature of humility and prosocial motivation entails transcending self-interest to enact behaviors that benefit others. We theorize that leader humility may enact a self-transcendent contagion effect that will manifest in enhanced follower prosocial motivation. Due to the fundamental nature of humility, this construct holds great promise in understanding how contextual signals (i.e., leader behaviors) shape prosocial motivation in followers. In this study, we find that leader humility impacts follower prosocial motivation through followers' perception of work meaningfulness. Specifically, we found that leader humility is positively related to prosocial motivation. We also found that this relationship is mediated by followers' perception of work meaningfulness, and that this mediation is moderated by followers' perception of relational vitality. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

‘I am lonely’, ‘I feel lonely’, ‘I am all alone’, ‘I feel lonely at work’. Each statement conjures up different sentiments about loneliness and speaks to the myriad ways one can arrive at the conclusion that they are lonely. This everyday language gives us insight into the mechanics of what loneliness is, what it is not, how it can manifest, and how being lonely is variously perceived in our social environments. Loneliness indicates that our relational life is unsatisfying in some way and implies a yearning for connection. The perception of loneliness is magnified in social contexts such as the workplace, yet because loneliness is often perceived as a shameful topic that is stigmatised, trivialised, or ignored, it is not something we often hear revealed within organisations. How does loneliness develop in the workplace? This article introduces a process model to help us understand how loneliness at work can manifest. Because the literature on workplace loneliness is far from mature, we use multidisciplinary research on various aspects of loneliness, relationships, and organisations to help develop a conceptual model of loneliness in the context of the workplace. Lastly, the article outlines future research directions for the study of workplace loneliness.

Loneliness has become a complex, ubiquitous problem in organizations. We review the research on loneliness in leader and follower roles and develop propositions related to understanding loneliness in organizational settings. Utilizing critical perspectives on leadership to better understand this phenomenon, we propose that loneliness is more emergent when leaders are either new to the leadership role or enact more “transformational,” “transactional,” or “authentic” leadership behaviors. Our analysis sheds light on the dark side of these popular leadership theories, especially with respect to the lack of development of high-quality relationships—and the resultant loneliness of both leaders and followers—in organizations stewarded by such leaders. We discuss implications and suggestions for future research.

In the past years, people have become more and more aware of the climate change crisis and cities have become more crowded. Also fueled vehicle transportation has become much more expensive, inefficient and bothersome as fuel has become much more expensive as well as cars, roads used by cars have to be maintained more often and also air and sound pollution caused mostly by cars has changed the idea of transportation for the general public. To address that, governments and municipalities all over the world have been searching for solutions to give its citizens different possibilities to replace the car with other types of transportation, like giving more space to pedestrians, public transport or micro-mobility transportation. In this article, we will be focusing our attention to micro-mobility and especially to its situation in Porto as coming from other countries, we have been puzzled about the lack of bike lanes and friendliness of the city towards micro-mobility. Being ourselves mostly users of bikes in our home cities, we wanted to understand why micro-mobility wasn't developed as much in Porto as other cities in Europe or even like its neighboring cities like Aveiro. Apart from that, the societal benefits of increasing micro-mobility and its improvement on not only the economy of the city but also the quality of life of its citizens were highlighted by cities all over Europe and using them as an example would help Porto develop a secure and healthy urbanistic infrastructure that would very highly improve the city of Porto in all its senses.

In this study, focus is upon the question of the standard for educational expenditure rather than on the alternative taxing methods for securing school district funding equalization. Chapter I begins by examining the major issues vital to urban education which the "Serrano" principle leaves unresolved. Then in Chapter II, particular elements of the greater education costs experienced by urban school systems are scrutinized. The purchasing power of a dollar in an average district may buy only fifty cents worth of educational resources in an inner-city school system. In Chapter III, the critical urban problem of underprivileged pupil populations requiring special and expensive compensatory education services is looked into. It is the authors' view that the responsibility which the Congress has assumed for the amelioration of that special problem must be greatly expanded and improved in coming years as the states undertake more general equilization of funding among their school districts. Finally, in Chapter IV, the constitutional argument for an "equal educational offering" standard in public education finance is set forth. While considerations of common sense and educational fairness are sufficient, in the authors' view, to commend that standard in any event to state legislatures all apart from the constitutional requirement, the authors also believe that in the last analysis courts can enforce that standard directly under the Constitution where state legislatures have failed to respond to rationality in public education funding. Loneliness is commonly associated with older people with the majority of research and interventions focusing on loneliness in aged and aging populations. However, loneliness seems to be on the rise for young adults more so than the elderly. Our research focusses on the experiences of young workers who report feeling lonely at work. We explore individual and organisational factors that may be contributing to loneliness, and comment on the consequences of feeling lonely at work. Qualitative data from 37 young adults from Western Europe suggest that these workers feel invisible at work, have a thwarted sense of belonging to their employing organisation, and often experience relational deficiencies due to automation and individualisation of work practices.

Although emotion and leadership is a flourishing topic in organizational research, little is known about the actual emotion-related leader behaviors within the context of nonprofit organizations. Through an inductive, multiple-case study drawing from 34 semistructured interviews with individuals who have occupied leader and/or follower roles in nonprofits organizations, a meso-level framework emerges that delineates the mutually strengthening interplay of emotion-related leader behaviors and organizational display norms in the nonprofit sector. These norms favor the expression of positive emotion and proscribe the display of negative emotion. Nonprofit leaders who enact emotion-related behaviors congruent with these display norms generate the follower outcomes of engagement and loyalty. Implications for nonprofit leadership research and practice are discussed.

Wide-spread all over the planet, incorporating all music genres, the music video, the subject matter of this analysis, has become irreplaceable in promotions, song presentations, an artist's image, visual aesthetics of subculture; today, most of the countries in the world have a channel devoted to music only, i.e. to music video. The form started to develop rapidly in the 50s of the twentieth century, alongside television. As it developed, its purpose has changed: from a simple presentation of musicians to an independent video form.

Although there is a growing interest toward the topic of leader humility, extant research has largely failed to consider the underlying mechanisms through which leader humility influences team outcomes. In this research, we integrate the emerging literature of leader humility and social information processing theory to theorize how leader humility facilitates the development of collective team psychological capital, leading to higher team task allocation effectiveness and team performance. While Owens and Hekman (2016) suggest that leader humility has homogeneous effects on followers, we propose a potential heterogeneous effect based on the complementarity literature (e.g., Tiedens, Unzueta, & Young, 2007) and the principle of equifinality (leaders may influence team outcomes through multiple pathways; Morgeson, DeRue, & Karam, 2010). In three studies conducted in China, Singapore, and Portugal, including an experiment, a multisource field study, and a three-wave multisource field study, we find support for our hypotheses that leader humility enhances team performance serially through increased team psychological capital and team task allocation effectiveness. We discuss the theoretical implications of our work to the leader humility, psychological capital, and team effectiveness literatures; and offer suggestions for future research.

Isolation of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) from xylanase-pretreated date palm fruit stalks pulp by ultra-high friction grinding was studied. Xylanase pretreatment resulted in decreasing hemicelluloses content and increasing degree of polymerization (DP) of the fibers. Progress of isolation of MFC from fibers was followed by optical microscopy and MorFi fiber analysis after passing the fibers through the grinder for different times. MorFi analysis results showed that xylanase pretreatment of the fibers facilitate isolation of MFC. The width of MFC isolated from untreated pulp was 21 ± 9 nm whereas that of MFC isolated from xylanase-treated pulps ranged from 81 ± 25 to 60 ± 20 nm. In addition, surface charge of MFC isolated from xylanase-pretreated fibers was lower than that of MFC isolated from untreated fibers. MFC films made from xylanase pretreated fibers showed higher density and tensile strength properties, lower water absorption and air permeability than those made from MFC isolated from untreated fibers.
