In the article, the problem of multi-criteria optimization of quality control mechanisms is analyzed. The presented method assumes the use of the NPGA genetic algorithm to simultaneously manage costs and the level of detecting non-conformities. The main assumption of the presented approach is to treat individual quality control procedures as vectors, whose elements are probability generating functions of defect detection. Each of these procedures generates certain operational costs and covers specific types of defects within its scope. The task of the presented algorithm is to indicate which procedure and to what extent should operate to ensure an appropriate level of non-conformity detection while minimizing costs. The article presents the theoretical foundations of the developed algorithm and the results of its implementation. The software has been developed in C++ with a particular focus on performance aspects. Its essence lies in the implementation of data structures introduced in the theoretical part, as well as methods for their rapid processing. Thanks to this approach, the entire program is scalable and can be used to solve multidimensional optimization problems. The presented approach may also find application in other areas of enterprise management. This will be possible primarily in cases where the effectiveness of procedures or devices is primarily evaluated based on probability. Therefore, the presented methods can provide effective optimization of other areas related to enterprise management.

One of the alternative ways to obtain low-cost energy is to use biogas generated by the digestion process from sewage sludge. This paper presents an analysis of the processes in four anaerobic digesters (AD) - A, B, C and D. The study analyzed the amount of biogas produced in each digester tank and compared them with each other. Using data sets consisting of parameters relating to the pre-sludge and surplus sludge diverted to each tank, the effect of the proportion of these parameters on biogas production efficiency was studied. Based on this data, several models using different machine learning techniques were built and compared, which can be used to support the biogas production optimization process. A free convenient web tool written in Python language - AD2Biogas Predictor Tool - was also given away for sewage treatment plants to conveniently estimate the predicted amount of biogas produced on a given day using the implemented models. The main objective of the study is to understand how the studied parameters affect the efficiency of the process and identify potential optimization strategies, as well as to propose a model for biogas yield prediction based on sludge characteristics. The result of the study is to contribute to increasing the efficiency of sludge management in wastewater treatment plants and increasing biogas production, both in the form of developed models and a software tool

Industrial quality control systems in mass production facilities must exhibit a very high level of defect detection efficiency. The continuous increase in quality control and process automation requirements is leading companies to increasingly experiment with artificial intelligence methods to boost efficiency. One potential application area for AI is visual inspection, which is an essential element of almost every quality control process. In this article, we propose the use of neural networks for the visual inspection of rotationally symmetric components. The presented method leverages the existence of symmetry to represent images in a polar coordinate system and to implement the learning process on data modified in this way. An undeniable advantage of the proposed algorithm is also the transition from a two- dimensional to a one-dimensional representation, which significantly reduces the demand for memory resources and the required computational power. This is particularly important in mass production processes, where the time for data analysis is relatively short. The high repeatability of images due to the mass production nature makes this model exceptionally effective, allowing not only to confirm the presence of defects but even to locate them. The obtained results are compared with the results achieved using a convolutional neural network operating on two-dimensional images.

Objectives The importance of the kynurenine pathway in normal immune system function has led to an appreciation of its possible contribution to autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of treatment with tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) inhibitors on the activity of the kynurenine pathway in patients with RA. Material and methods This was an investigator-initiated, prospective, observational study. The study was performed on 30 RA patients (Caucasian, 11 male, 19 female; mean age 45 ±16 years) treated with TNF-α inhibitors. All patients were assessed before and after 6 months of therapy. As a control group, age- and sex-matched, 20 healthy volunteers were recruited. Disease activity was evaluated by the Modified Disease Activity Score with 28-joint count (DAS28). Inflammatory markers were assessed routinely by the hospital central laboratory. Serum concentrations of kynu­renine, serotonin and tryptophan were measured with specific immunoassays. To estimate indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) activity, kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratio was calculated. Results The results of our study showed changes in tryptophan metabolism in RA patients, compared with healthy controls. Surprisingly, RA patients had statistically significant decreased kynu­renine-to-tryptophan ratio ( p = 0.003), which could indicate diminished IDO activation in RA. Moreover, we found no significant changes in kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratio after treated with TNF-α inhibitors ( p = 0.490), despite disease remission. Additionally, tryptophan metabolism activity did not correlate with objective markers of inflammation. Conclusions The RA patients had altered tryptophan metabolism, compared with healthy controls. The mechanisms affecting tryptophan metabolism in RA may be complex. We believe that continuing elucidation of pathophysiological pathways relevant in RA offer substantial hope for the development of specific pharmacotherapy for treatment of RA – especially for comorbidity of RA and depression.

The drastic increase in the amount of packaging waste from conventional plastics, caused by improper waste management, is a serious challenge for the planet. It is therefore worth considering how we can solve this problem. Thus, it is necessary to develop new polymeric materials that retain the functional properties of traditional plastics but are susceptible to degradation with the participation of microorganisms. The development of new eco-friendly materials requires a holistic approach in terms of their disposal. Organic recycling enables the disposal of biodegradable packaging along with food remains that are difficult to remove. The article presents a study on the degradation of biocomposites of polylactide with cork in various environments (water, buffer, and compost). The obtained results indicate a clear influence of the presence of the filler and its amount on the degradation profile of the composites. In addition, the effect of sample shrinkage was observed, especially during degradation in water, where the pH decreases during the process due to the appearance of degradation products. This effect may be important not only for the degradation profile of the packaging but also during its use. Packaging distorted due to shrinkage may be a sign of improper product storage.

In a 56-day experiment, the effects of selenium-enriched yeast (SeY) on the growth, enzymatic activity of the gastrointestinal tract, oxidative stress parameters, and selected immunological parameters of sterlet, Acipenser ruthenus (L.), were analyzed. The concentration of selenomethionine (SeMet) from SeY in the feed was 0 mg kg−1 (C), 0.7 mg kg−1 feed (S1), 1.4 mg kg−1 feed (S2), and 2.1 mg kg−1 feed (S3). Statistically significant differences were found in the final fish body weight between the control and groups S1 and S3. A significant increase in lipase activity was found in the initial section of the small intestine of fish from group S3. The highest activity of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase was recorded in the liver of fish from group S2. Analyses of non-specific humoral response parameters showed an increase in ceruloplasmin activity in group S1. The lowest active dose of SeMet derived from yeast tested in this study that stimulated humoral immunity and fish growth was 0.7 mg kg−1 feed (S1).

In this study, we evaluated the integration of urban habitat data in spatial development documents across Poland’s 28 largest cities and assessed the implications for urban environmental management and biodiversity conservation. The detailed habitat maps identify critical areas for protection, enhancing ecosystem services, and supporting nature-based solutions that positively impact residents’ health and social cohesion. A total of 372 sources were analyzed and 467 habitat types were identified primarily from phytosociological surveys. However, only 33.2% of these habitats have been included in urban planning documents, highlighting a substantial integration gap. Complete taxa lists and habitat maps covering the entire city area, suitable for biodiversity management needs, are rarely included in urban planning documents. The findings have underscored the need for detailed habitat mapping to improve urban environmental management, biodiversity conservation, and public health promotion.

Abstract Background Magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) represents a promising therapeutic strategy in cancer utilizing the heating capabilities of magnetic nanoparticles when exposed to an alternating magnetic field (AMF). Because the efficacy and safety of MFH treatments depends on numerous intrinsic and extrinsic factors, therefore, the proper MFH setups should focus on thermal energy dosed into the cancer cells. Methods In this study, we performed MFH experiments using human lung cancer A549 cells (in vitro) and NUDE Balb/c mice bearing human lung (A549) cancer (in vivo). In these two experimental models, the heat was induced by magnesium-doped iron(III) oxide nanoparticles coated with mPEG-silane (Mg0.1-γ-Fe2O3(mPEG-silane)0.5) when exposed to an AMF. Results We observed that the lung cancer cells treated with Mg0.1-γ-Fe2O3(mPEG-silane)0.5 (0.25 mg·mL−1) and magnetized for 30 min at 14.4 kA·m−1 yielded a satisfactory outcome in reducing the cell viability up to ca. 21% (in vitro). The activation energy calculated for this field strength was estimated for 349 kJ·mol−1. Both volumetric measurements and tumor mass assessments confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a superior thermal effect in mice bearing human lung cancer injected intratumorally with Mg0.1-γ-Fe2O3(mPEG-silane)0.5 nanoparticles (3 mg·mL−1) and subjected to an AMF (18.3 kA·m−1) for 30 min four times at weekly intervals. Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide and poses a significant challenge to effective treatment due to its complexity. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is one of the cancer hallmarks and is a critical process in tumor growth and metastasis. The pivotal role of angiogenesis in cancer development has made antiangiogenic treatment a promising strategy for cancer therapy. To develop an effective therapy, it is essential to understand the basics of the physiological and tumor angiogenesis process. This review presents the primary factors related to physiological and tumor angiogenesis and the mechanisms of angiogenesis in tumors. We summarize potential molecular targets for cancer treatment by focusing on the vasculature, with the VEGF/VEGFR pathway being one of the most important and well-studied. Additionally, we present the advantages and limitations of currently used clinical protocols for cancer treatment targeting the VEGF/VEGFR pathway.

BackgroundA personalised approach to the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in children and adolescents, as well as the development of supportive therapies, has significantly improved survival. Despite this, some patients still die before starting treatment or in an early phase of therapy before achieving remission. The study analysed the frequency, clinical features and risk factors for early deaths (ED) and treatment related deaths (TRD) of children and adolescents with AML.MethodsFrom January 2005 to November 2023, 646 children with AML treated in the centers of the Polish Pediatric Leukemia and Lymphoma Study Group according to three subsequent therapeutic protocols were evaluated: AML-BFM 2004 Interim (385 children), AML-BFM 2012 Registry (131 children) and AML-BFM 2019 (130 children).ResultsOut of 646 children, early death occurred in 30 children, including 15 girls. The median age was 10.7 years (1 day to 18 years). More than half of the patients (53%) were diagnosed with acute myelomonocytic leukemia (M5) and 13% with acute promyelocytic leukemia (M3). The ED rate for the three consecutive AML-BFM protocols was 4.9% vs. 5.3% vs. 3.1%, respectively. In 19 patients, death occurred before the 15th day of treatment, in 11 between the 15th and 42nd day. The most common cause of death before the 15th day (ED15) was leukostasis and bleeding, whereas between the 15th and 42nd day (ED15-42), infections, mainly bacterial sepsis. A significant association was found between ED15 and high leukocyte count (>10 × 109/L), M3 leukemia (p 100 × 109/L, was a significant predictor of early death. The overall TRD for the entire study period was 3.4%. The main cause of death were infections, mainly bacterial sepsis (10 children out of 22, 45.4%).ConclusionsHyperleukocytosis remains significant factor of early mortality in patients with AML, despite the introduction of various cytoreductive methods. Infections are still the main cause of treatment related deaths. A more individualized approach by using new targeted drugs may be the therapeutic option of choice in the future.

BackgroundThe autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a significant role in atrial fibrillation (AF). Catheter ablation (CA) is a well-established treatment method for AF and significantly affects the ANS, including baroreceptor (BR) function. However, little is known about the changes in BR function caused by radiofrequency (RF) or cryoballoon energy (CB) and its impact on future AF recurrences.PurposeTo assess 1-year efficacy of CA of AF in relation to BR function modification and type of ablation energy used.MethodsThe study group consisted of 78 patients (25 females, mean age 58 ± 9 years) with paroxysmal AF and first CA (39 patients in the RF group and 39 in the CB group). The BR function was assessed non-invasively, using tilt testing before and after CA, and three BR parameters were calculated: event count (BREC) depicting overall BR activity, slope mean depicting BR sensitivity (BRS), and BR effectiveness index (BEI). The efficacy of CA was assessed during 1-year follow-up, which consisted of ambulatory visits and 24-h Holter ECG recordings at 3, 6, and 12 months after CA. The quality of life was assessed by using a dedicated scale [University of Toronto Atrial Fibrillation Severity Scale (AFSS)].ResultsThe two groups did not show differences in terms of clinical or demographic data. One-year follow-up was completed for 35 (89.7%) patients from the CB group and for 34 (87.2%) from the RF group. The rates of efficacy of CB and RF were similar [31/35 (88.6%) vs. 26/34 (76.5%), respectively]. After CA, the BR function decreased in both groups, with a significantly greater decrease in the CB group. The changes in BR parameters were similar in both responders and non-responders after CA in the whole group [BREC 10.0 (2.0–24.0) vs. 12.0 (4.0–21.5), p = 0.939; BRS 5.4 (3.7–6.5) vs. 4.8 (3.6–7.2), p = 0.809; BEI 24.8 (15.9–27.4) vs. 17.5 (8.9–27.5), p = 0.508, respectively]. According to the AFSS, the AF symptoms were significantly reduced in both groups to a similar extent.ConclusionsCA for AF significantly decreased the BR function, especially in patients undergoing CB. There was no correlation between CA-induced changes in BR parameters and ablation outcome.

Introduction and Objective: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and anxiety, as well as depressive disorders, can coexist. Depression may affect IBD symptoms and vice versa. The aim of our study is to determine the impact of different classes of antidepressant medications in the treatment of IBD with comorbid depressive episodes, to summarize the most commonly used therapies, and to identify the most effective practices in treating inflammatory diseases with coexisting depressive episodes. Materials and Methods: A review of the available literature was conducted by searching the PubMed and Google Scholar databases using the following keywords: inflammatory bowel diseases, depression, antidepressants, in both English and Polish, up until July 19, 2024. To ensure the high quality of the narrative review, the SANRA scale (a scale for the quality assessment of narrative review articles) was used. Results: Studies indicate that depressive symptoms occur in approximately 25-27.5% of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Treatment of depression in IBD patients often includes the use of antidepressant medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which not only reduce depression but also exhibit anti-inflammatory effects. SSRIs may also be effective in improving patients' quality of life; however, they may cause side effects such as diarrhea and an increased risk of bleeding. In addition to SSRIs, other antidepressants, such as serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and atypical antipsychotics, are also used and may have a beneficial impact on the course of the disease. Conclusions: In patients with IBD and comorbid depression, SSRIs are most commonly used, followed by TLPDs, SNRIs, and atypical antipsychotics. Drugs from these groups may have a beneficial effect on depressive symptoms, but also affect the course of IBD. Further clinical studies are needed to establish precise guidelines for the use of these drugs in patients with IBD.

Interesuje nas, jak zmieniający się w Polsce dyskurs feministyczny wpływa na osoby funkcjonujące w akademiach sztuki i jak dochodzi do przearanżowania wyobraźni akademickiej, jakie figury pracownicze się w niej pojawiają. Przyglądając się uwarunkowaniom pracy w akademii, zastanawiamy się także, jak ugenderowione są relacje pracownicze, w jaki sposób płeć rozpatrywana intersekcjonalnie naznacza status pracowniczy osób i jak oddziałuje na postawy wytwarzane wobec instytucji.

Chicken bones, a by-product of the poultry industry, can directly or indirectly enter the food chain. Bone meal and bone products could be sources of many contaminants. Considering the wide range of uses made of bones in the culinary and food industries, this material needs to be safe and antibiotic residue–free. To determine if such is the case, the concentration of doxycycline in chicken bones was investigated, this antimicrobial being one of the most commonly used in poultry production.

Corneal disease and damage can arise from various causes, including infections, corneal dystrophies, trauma and improper contact lens use. These factors can lead to corneal blindness which greatly decreases the patient’s quality of life. Although corneal transplantation is a viable treatment option for many patients, the risk of rejection after corneal transplantation remains a concern. Severe corneal damage requires special methods of treatment, which are still sought after. This narrative review aims to summarize the use of stem cells and keratoprosthesis in the treatment of corneal diseases. Stem cell therapy, particularly limbal stem cell transplantation, shows promise in corneal regenerative therapy, especially the treatment of limbal stem cell deficiency. Additionally, induced pluripotent stem cells have been successfully used in cornea transplantation, offering a novel approach to restoring vision in patients with corneal diseases. Keratoprosthesis, such as the Boston keratoprosthesis and osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis, provides an alternative for patients who cannot undergo traditional corneal transplantation. Artificial prostheses are also an alternative to corneal transplantation in cases of extensive trauma or in the absence of donor tissue. Continued research and development in stem cell therapy and keratoprosthesis hold the potential to improve the outcomes, accessibility of corneal disease treatment and reducing the global burden of corneal blindness.

Due to the deteriorating condition of the power grids and the increasing number of power outages, research on technical solutions to prevent blackouts in the Ukrainian energy system is becoming an extremely relevant and necessary task. This study aims to analyse technical solutions aimed at increasing the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system to prevent blackouts and ensure reliable electricity supply to the population. The methods used include the analytical method, classification method, functional method, statistical method, synthesis method, and others. The study analysed modern technical solutions to improve the resilience of the Ukrainian energy system. The study included a detailed analysis of innovative approaches to modernizing the energy infrastructure. The primary objective was to study and evaluate modern technologies for designing new power lines with improved transmission characteristics. The study emphasized the importance of expanding automation systems to effectively monitor and control the state of the power grid. The study also identified the importance of using energy storage, developing renewable energy sources and improving electricity consumption forecasting systems. Flexible load management measures and improved cybersecurity systems were identified as critical. It is noted that the implementation of the project to provide electricity to the conditional area will be a key step in improving the lives of the local population and providing the necessary conditions for the development of the area’s infrastructure and economy. In addition, the operation of generators for electricity supply will help to reduce the feeling of lack of electricity among residents and ensure reliability in the use of electricity for all sectors of the district’s economy. The overall conclusion is that the implementation of such technical solutions will significantly increase the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system. The results obtained make it possible to effectively avoid blackouts and ensure a sustainable electricity supply to the population. This allows energy companies, government agencies and other stakeholders to optimize energy resource management and make informed decisions to ensure the sustainable and efficient operation of Ukraine’s energy system in the face of a possible blackout risk

We studied the effects of Aeroxide P25 titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) with a diameter of 21 nm on induction of DNA damage and long-term survival of three human cell lines: hepatocellular liver carcinoma HepG2, colorectal adenocarcinoma HT29 and lung carcinoma A549. The endpoints examined were DNA breakage estimated by the comet assay and oxidative base damage recognized by formamide-pyrimidine glycosylase (FPG) estimated with the FPG+ comet assay, frequencies of histone γH2AX foci and micronuclei, apoptosis, cell metabolic activity measured by mitochondrial activity (MTT) assay and long-term survival measured by colony-forming ability. Each cell line had a different pattern of DNA breakage and base damage vs. nanoparticle (NP) concentration and treatment time. There was no increase in the frequencies of histone γH2AX foci and micronuclei as compared to those in the untreated cells. In parallel with these results, no induction of apoptosis has been found in none of the cell lines tested. The reported experiments provided no evidence of the long-term in vitro toxicity of Aeroxide P25 TiO2 NPs, despite a slight decrease in mitochondrial activity and cell survival during the first 72 h.

The research was carried out in 2018-2021 at the Agricultural Experimental Station, in Poland. The factors of the experiment were three morphotypes of winter oilseed rape: population morphotype, long-stemmed morphotype, semi-dwarf morphotype. The second factor of the experiment were three ways of using the preparations: 1. Control variant, 2. Organic preparation (Ugmax) 3. Biostimulator containing P₂0₅ and K₂O, 4. Biostimulator containing silicon. The aim of the study was the reaction of three morphotypes of winter rape to soil and foliar application of microorganisms and inorganic preparations in different growing seasons. Elements of yield structure and yielding of winter rape were determined by a genetic factor. In all growing seasons, the best yielding was in the restored hybrid with the traditional type of growth, while the seed yield of the semi-dwarf form was lower by 5.8% on average, and by 10% on average in the population form. The number of seeds in the pod and the value of the yield index (HI) was the most favourable in the restored forms, and the thousand-seed weight and yield in the population form. The preparations applied to the soil and leaves increased the parameters of yield structure and yielding in all tested cultivars. Soil preparation with microorganisms as well as micro and macro elements applied in autumn before sowing seeds and in spring in the BBCH 21-36 phase significantly increased the number of seeds per pod by 3.4% on average; weight of a thousand seeds by 3.5% on average, seed yield by 15.7% on average, straw yield by 4.5% on average compared to the control variant. The ratio of seed yield to biomass yield was higher in the heterosis cultivars by an average of 9.2% compared to the population cultivar.

Abstract Salicylic and acetylsalicylic acids and ethacridine have complementary bioactive properties. They can be combined to obtain double-drug multicomponent crystals. Their reactivity in different environments was explored to obtain the possible compounds, stable at different hydration degrees. Solution, liquid-assisted grinding, and dry preparation approaches were applied to the couples of reactants in different stoichiometric ratios. Four compounds were obtained, and three out of them were stable and reproducible enough to determine their structures using SCXRD or PXRD methods. When coupled to ethacridine, salicylic acid gave two stable structures (1 and 3, both showing 1:1 ratio but different hydration degree) and a metastable one (5), while acetylsalicylic acid only one structure from solution (2 in 1:1 ratio), while LAG caused hydrolysis and formation of the same compound obtained by LAG of ethacridine with salicylic acid. While solution precipitation gave dihydrated (1) or monohydrated (2) structures with low yields, LAG of salicylic acid and ethacridine allowed obtaining an anhydrous salt complex (3) with a yield close to 1. The structures obtained by solution crystallizations maximize π(acridine)–π(acridine) contacts with a less compact packing, while the LAG structure is more compact with a packing driven by hydrogen bonds. For all compounds, NMR, ATR-FTIR, and Hirshfeld surface analysis and energy framework calculations were performed.

The article presents the history of Polish feminist movements against the background of similar organizations in Bohemia and Hungary in 19th and 20th century. It describes their founders and members, cooperation between them and methods of activity leading to obtaining voting rights for women. Depicting similarities and differences between them, the article explains the complexity of factors creating the feminist movement in Central Europe. Their main goal was achieved only after the First World War. The authors mainly use texts by Polish feminists and literature in Polish, English, Czech and Hungarian. They used the comparative method during analysing the sources.

This article examines the critical role of higher education reforms in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries since their independence as they endeavor to align their systems with European standards and norms, ultimately seeking closer integration with the European Union (EU). The EaP countries, comprising Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine, have embarked on ambitious journeys of transformation in their higher education sectors to foster economic development, enhance academic excellence, and strengthen regional cooperation. The article employs a comprehensive approach, encompassing both policy analysis and empirical insights to shed light on the multifaceted nature of higher education reforms across the region. It delves into the various challenges and opportunities faced by the EaP countries in their pursuit of European integration through higher education reforms. The key themes explored include the alignment of the national higher education reforms with the Bologna Declaration guidelines including the promotion of internationalization and quality assurance mechanisms emphasizing the importance of cross-border collaboration and knowledge exchange. It critically assesses the progress made so far, highlighting successes and identifying persistent obstacles. Moreover, it examines the role of international organizations and the EU programs in supporting these reforms. The analysis highlights the importance of higher education reforms in the EaP region not only as an instrument for achieving European integration but also as a catalyst for broader societal and economic transformations. The research data collected refer to the period of 1991-2020.

The Act of July 7, 1994 - Construction Law imposes numerous obligations on property managers. The most important of them is the obligation to maintain and use the building in a proper condition ensuring the safety of building users and third parties. Failure to do so may result in a construction disaster, ie, the building collapsing or parts detaching, which may result in property damage and personal injury. The article contains considerations regarding compliance with the provisions to redress this damage in the light of the provisions of the Civil Code. We present CAMELS-CH (Catchment Attributes and MEteorology for Large-sample Studies – Switzerland), a large-sample hydro-meteorological data set for hydrologic Switzerland in central Europe. This domain covers 331 basins within Switzerland and neighboring countries. About one-third of the catchments are located in Austria, France, Germany and Italy. As an Alpine country, Switzerland covers a vast diversity of landscapes, including mountainous environments, karstic regions, and several strongly cultivated regions, along with a wide range of hydrological regimes, i.e., catchments that are glacier-, snow- or rain dominated. Similar to existing data sets, CAMELS-CH comprises dynamic hydro-meteorological variables and static catchment attributes. CAMELS-CH (Höge et al., 2023; available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7784632) encompasses 40 years of data between 1 January 1981 and 31 December 2020, including daily time series of stream flow and water levels, and of meteorological data such as precipitation and air temperature. It also includes daily snow water equivalent data for each catchment starting from 2 September 1998. Additionally, we provide annual time series of land cover change and glacier evolution per catchment. The static catchment attributes cover location and topography, climate, hydrology, soil, hydrogeology, geology, land use, human impact and glaciers. This Swiss data set complements comparable publicly accessible data sets, providing data from the “water tower of Europe”.

Malaria is a major international public health problem. The risk of acquiring malaria varies depending on the intensity of transmission and adherence to mosquito precautions and prophylaxis recommendations. Severe malaria can cause significant multiorgan dysfunction, including acute kidney injury (AKI). Intravenous artesunate is the treatment of choice for severe malaria in non-endemic areas. One of the possible events connected with the lifesaving effects of artemisins is post-artesunate haemolysis (PADH), which may be potentially dangerous and under-recognised. We present a case of a seafarer with severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria complicated with AKI and PADH, with a good response to steroid treatment. This case highlights the need for malaria prophylaxis in business travellers, e.g., seafarers to malara-endemic regions, and close supervision of patients with malaria even after the completion of antimalarial treatment due to the possibility of late complications.

Primary intracranial melanoma is a very rare brain tumor, especially when accompanied by benign intramedullary melanocytoma. Distinguishing between a primary central nervous system (CNS) lesion and metastatic melanoma is extremely difficult, especially when the primary cutaneous lesion is not visible. Here we report a 13-year-old girl admitted to the Neurosurgery Department of the Institute of Polish Mother’s Health Centre in Lodz due to upper limb paresis. An intramedullary tumor of the cervical C3–C4 and an accompanying syringomyelic cavity C1–C7 were revealed. The child underwent partial removal of the tumor due to the risk of damage to spinal cord motor centers. The removed part of the tumor was diagnosed as melanocytoma. Eight months later, a neurological examination revealed paresis of the right sixth cranial nerve, accompanied by bilateral optic disc edema. Diagnostic imaging revealed a brain tumor. The girl underwent resection of both detected the tumors and an additional satellite lesion revealed during the surgery. The removed tumors were diagnosed as malignant melanomas in pathomorphological examination. Molecular analysis revealed NRASQ61K mutation in both the intracranial and the intramedullary tumor. It should be noted that in cases where available evidence is inconclusive, an integrative diagnostic process is essential to reach a definitive diagnosis.
