Vision-language-action (VLA) models represent a promising direction for developing general-purpose robotic systems, demonstrating the ability to combine visual understanding, language comprehension, and action generation. However, systematic evaluation of these models across diverse robotic tasks remains limited. In this work, we present a comprehensive evaluation framework and benchmark suite for assessing VLA models. We profile three state-of-the-art VLM and VLAs - GPT-4o, OpenVLA, and JAT - across 20 diverse datasets from the Open-X-Embodiment collection, evaluating their performance on various manipulation tasks. Our analysis reveals several key insights: 1. current VLA models show significant variation in performance across different tasks and robot platforms, with GPT-4o demonstrating the most consistent performance through sophisticated prompt engineering, 2. all models struggle with complex manipulation tasks requiring multi-step planning, and 3. model performance is notably sensitive to action space characteristics and environmental factors. This study addresses the use of Reed-Solomon error correction codes in QR codes to enhance resilience against failures. To fully grasp this approach, a basic cryptographic context is provided, necessary for understanding Reed-Solomon codes. The study begins by defining a code and explores key outcomes for codes with additional properties, such as linearity. The theoretical framework is further developed with specific definitions and examples of Reed-Solomon codes, presented as a particular variant of BCH codes. Additionally, the structure of QR codes is analyzed, encompassing different versions and how data is represented in the form of black and white pixels within an image. Finally, an inherent vulnerability of Reed-Solomon Codes, and particularly of QR codes, related to selective manipulation of modules is examined. This vulnerability leverages the error correction mechanisms present in Reed-Solomon codes.

Large language model (LLM) chatbots are susceptible to biases and hallucinations, but current evaluations of mental wellness technologies lack comprehensive case studies to evaluate their practical applications. Here, we address this gap by introducing the MHealth-EVAL framework, a new role-play based interactive evaluation method designed specifically for evaluating the appropriateness, trustworthiness, and safety of mental wellness chatbots. We also introduce Psyfy, a new chatbot leveraging LLMs to facilitate transdiagnostic Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). We demonstrate the MHealth-EVAL framework's utility through a comparative study of two versions of Psyfy against standard baseline chatbots. Our results showed that Psyfy chatbots outperformed the baseline chatbots in delivering appropriate responses, engaging users, and avoiding untrustworthy responses. However, both Psyfy and the baseline chatbots exhibited some limitations, such as providing predominantly US-centric resources. While Psyfy chatbots were able to identify most unsafe situations and avoid giving unsafe responses, they sometimes struggled to recognize subtle harmful intentions when prompted in role play scenarios. Our study demonstrates a practical application of the MHealth-EVAL framework and showcases Psyfy's utility in harnessing LLMs to enhance user engagement and provide flexible and appropriate responses aligned with an evidence-based CBT approach.

Large Visual Language Models (LVLMs) struggle with hallucinations in visual instruction following task(s), limiting their trustworthiness and real-world applicability. We propose Pelican -- a novel framework designed to detect and mitigate hallucinations through claim verification. Pelican first decomposes the visual claim into a chain of sub-claims based on first-order predicates. These sub-claims consist of (predicate, question) pairs and can be conceptualized as nodes of a computational graph. We then use Program-of-Thought prompting to generate Python code for answering these questions through flexible composition of external tools. Pelican improves over prior work by introducing (1) intermediate variables for precise grounding of object instances, and (2) shared computation for answering the sub-question to enable adaptive corrections and inconsistency identification. We finally use reasoning abilities of LLMs to verify the correctness of the claim by considering the consistency and confidence of the (question, answer) pairs from each sub-claim. Our experiments reveal a drop in hallucination rate by ~ 8% - 32% across various baseline LVLMs and a 27% drop compared to approaches proposed for hallucination mitigation on MMHal-Bench. Results on two other benchmarks further corroborate our results.

In recent years, digital platform companies have faced increasing challenges in managing customer complaints, driven by widespread consumer adoption. This paper introduces an end-to-end pipeline, named RE-GrievanceAssist, designed specifically for real estate customer complaint management. The pipeline consists of three key components: i) response/no-response ML model using TF-IDF vectorization and XGBoost classifier ; ii) user type classifier using fasttext classifier; iii) issue/sub-issue classifier using TF-IDF vectorization and XGBoost classifier. Finally, it has been deployed as a batch job in Databricks, resulting in a remarkable 40% reduction in overall manual effort with monthly cost reduction of Rs 1,50,000 since August 2023.

Marketing is one of the high-cost activities for any online platform. With the increase in the number of customers, it is crucial to understand customers based on their dynamic behaviors to design effective marketing strategies. Customer segmentation is a widely used approach to group customers into different categories and design the marketing strategy targeting each group individually. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an end-to-end pipeline RE-RFME for segmenting customers into 4 groups: high value, promising, need attention, and need activation. Concretely, we propose a novel RFME (Recency, Frequency, Monetary and Engagement) model to track behavioral features of customers and segment them into different categories. Finally, we train the K-means clustering algorithm to cluster the user into one of the 4 categories. We show the effectiveness of the proposed approach on real-world Housing.com datasets for both website and mobile application users.

We propose an end-to-end real-estate recommendation system, RE-RecSys, which has been productionized in real-world industry setting. We categorize any user into 4 categories based on available historical data: i) cold-start users; ii) short-term users; iii) long-term users; and iv) short-long term users. For cold-start users, we propose a novel rule-based engine that is based on the popularity of locality and user preferences. For short-term users, we propose to use content-filtering model which recommends properties based on recent interactions of users. For long-term and short-long term users, we propose a novel combination of content and collaborative filtering based approach which can be easily productionized in the real-world scenario. Moreover, based on the conversion rate, we have designed a novel weighing scheme for different impressions done by users on the platform for the training of content and collaborative models. Finally, we show the efficiency of the proposed pipeline, RE-RecSys, on a real-world property and clickstream dataset collected from leading real-estate platform in India. We show that the proposed pipeline is deployable in real-world scenario with an average latency of <40 ms serving 1000 rpm.

In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of various LLMs in interpreting tabular data through different prompting strategies and data formats. Our analyses extend across six benchmarks for table-related tasks such as question-answering and fact-checking. We introduce for the first time the assessment of LLMs' performance on image-based table representations. Specifically, we compare five text-based and three image-based table representations, demonstrating the role of representation and prompting on LLM performance. This article presents an implementation of a natural-language speech interface and a haptic feedback interface that enables a human supervisor to provide guidance to, request information, and receive status updates from a Spot robot. We present the design of a mixed reality (MR) telehealth training system that aims to close the gap between in-person and distance training and re-training for medical procedures. Our system uses real-time volumetric capture as a means for communicating and relating spatial information between the non-colocated trainee and instructor. The system's design is based on a requirements elicitation study performed in situ, at a medical school simulation training center. The focus is on the lightweight real-time transmission of volumetric data - meaning the use of consumer hardware, easy and quick deployment, and low-demand computations. We evaluate the MR system design by analyzing the workload for the users during medical training. We compare in-person, video, and MR training workloads. The results indicate that the overall workload for central line placement training with MR does not increase significantly compared to video communication. Our work shows that, when designed strategically together with domain experts, an MR communication system can be used effectively for complex medical procedural training without increasing the overall workload for users significantly. Augmented reality (AR) has great potential for use in healthcare applications, especially remote medical training and supervision. In this paper, we analyze the usage of an AR communication system to teach a medical procedure, the placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) under ultrasound guidance. We examine various AR communication and collaboration components, including gestural communication, volumetric information, annotations, augmented objects, and augmented screens. We compare how teaching in AR differs from teaching through videoconferencing-based communication. Our results include a detailed medical training steps analysis in which we compare how verbal and visual communication differs between video and AR training. We identify procedural steps in which medical experts give visual instructions utilizing AR components. We examine the change in AR usage and interaction over time and recognize patterns between users. We design and evaluate a mixed reality real-time communication system for remote assistance during CPR emergencies. Our system allows an expert to guide a first responder, remotely, on how to give first aid. RGBD cameras capture a volumetric view of the local scene including the patient, the first responder, and the environment. The volumetric capture is augmented onto the remote expert's view to spatially guide the first responder using visual and verbal instructions. We evaluate the mixed reality communication system in a research study in which participants face a simulated emergency. The first responder moves the patient to the recovery position and performs chest compressions as well as mouth-to-mask ventilation. Our study compares mixed reality against videoconferencing-based assistance using CPR performance measures, cognitive workload surveys, and semi-structured interviews. We find that more visual communication including gestures and objects is used by the remote expert when assisting in mixed reality compared to videoconferencing. Medical procedures are an essential part of healthcare delivery, and the acquisition of procedural skills is a critical component of medical education. Unfortunately, procedural skill is not evenly distributed among medical providers. Skills may vary within departments or institutions, and across geographic regions, depending on the provider's training and ongoing experience. We present a mixed reality real-time communication system to increase access to procedural skill training and to improve remote emergency assistance. Our system allows a remote expert to guide a local operator through a medical procedure. RGBD cameras capture a volumetric view of the local scene including the patient, the operator, and the medical equipment. The volumetric capture is augmented onto the remote expert's view to allow the expert to spatially guide the local operator using visual and verbal instructions. We evaluated our mixed reality communication system in a study in which experts teach the ultrasound-guided placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) to students in a simulation setting. The study compares state-of-the-art video communication against our system. The results indicate that our system enhances and offers new possibilities for visual communication compared to video teleconference-based training.

Existing long video retrieval systems are trained and tested in the paragraph-to-video retrieval regime, where every long video is described by a single long paragraph. This neglects the richness and variety of possible valid descriptions of a video, which could range anywhere from moment-by-moment detail to a single phrase summary. To provide a more thorough evaluation of the capabilities of long video retrieval systems, we propose a pipeline that leverages state-of-the-art large language models to carefully generate a diverse set of synthetic captions for long videos. We validate this pipeline's fidelity via rigorous human inspection. We use synthetic captions from this pipeline to perform a benchmark of a representative set of video language models using long video datasets, and show that the models struggle on shorter captions. We show that finetuning on this data can both mitigate these issues (+2.8% R@1 over SOTA on ActivityNet with diverse captions), and even improve performance on standard paragraph-to-video retrieval (+1.0% R@1 on ActivityNet). We also use synthetic data from our pipeline as query expansion in the zero-shot setting (+3.4% R@1 on ActivityNet). We derive insights by analyzing failure cases for retrieval with short captions. We present DRESS, a large vision language model (LVLM) that innovatively exploits Natural Language feedback (NLF) from Large Language Models to enhance its alignment and interactions by addressing two key limitations in the state-of-the-art LVLMs. First, prior LVLMs generally rely only on the instruction finetuning stage to enhance alignment with human preferences. Without incorporating extra feedback, they are still prone to generate unhelpful, hallucinated, or harmful responses. Second, while the visual instruction tuning data is generally structured in a multi-turn dialogue format, the connections and dependencies among consecutive conversational turns are weak. This reduces the capacity for effective multi-turn interactions. To tackle these, we propose a novel categorization of the NLF into two key types: critique and refinement. The critique NLF identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the responses and is used to align the LVLMs with human preferences. The refinement NLF offers concrete suggestions for improvement and is adopted to improve the interaction ability of the LVLMs-- which focuses on LVLMs' ability to refine responses by incorporating feedback in multi-turn interactions. To address the non-differentiable nature of NLF, we generalize conditional reinforcement learning for training. Our experimental results demonstrate that DRESS can generate more helpful (9.76%), honest (11.52%), and harmless (21.03%) responses, and more effectively learn from feedback during multi-turn interactions compared to SOTA LVMLs., Comment: CVPR 2024. Paraphrasing of offensive content is a better alternative to content removal and helps improve civility in a communication environment. Supervised paraphrasers; however, rely heavily on large quantities of labelled data to help preserve meaning and intent. They also often retain a large portion of the offensiveness of the original content, which raises questions on their overall usability. In this paper we aim to assist practitioners in developing usable paraphrasers by exploring In-Context Learning (ICL) with large language models (LLMs), i.e., using a limited number of input-label demonstration pairs to guide the model in generating desired outputs for specific queries. Our study focuses on key factors such as - number and order of demonstrations, exclusion of prompt instruction, and reduction in measured toxicity. We perform principled evaluation on three datasets, including our proposed Context-Aware Polite Paraphrase (CAPP) dataset, comprising of dialogue-style rude utterances, polite paraphrases, and additional dialogue context. We evaluate our approach using four closed source and one open source LLM. Our results reveal that ICL is comparable to supervised methods in generation quality, while being qualitatively better by 25% on human evaluation and attaining lower toxicity by 76%. Vision-language models (VLMs) have recently demonstrated strong efficacy as visual assistants that can parse natural queries about the visual content and generate human-like outputs. In this work, we explore the ability of these models to demonstrate human-like reasoning based on the perceived information. To address a crucial concern regarding the extent to which their reasoning capabilities are fully consistent and grounded, we also measure the reasoning consistency of these models. We achieve this by proposing a chain-of-thought (CoT) based consistency measure. However, such an evaluation requires a benchmark that encompasses both high-level inference and detailed reasoning chains, which is costly. We tackle this challenge by proposing a LLM-Human-in-the-Loop pipeline, which notably reduces cost while simultaneously ensuring the generation of a high-quality dataset. Based on this pipeline and the existing coarse-grained annotated dataset, we build the CURE benchmark to measure both the zero-shot reasoning performance and consistency of VLMs. We evaluate existing state-of-the-art VLMs, and find that even the best-performing model is unable to demonstrate strong visual reasoning capabilities and consistency, indicating that substantial efforts are required to enable VLMs to perform visual reasoning as systematically and consistently as humans. As an early step, we propose a two-stage training framework aimed at improving both the reasoning performance and consistency of VLMs. The first stage involves employing supervised fine-tuning of VLMs using step-by-step reasoning samples automatically generated by LLMs. In the second stage, we further augment the training process by incorporating feedback provided by LLMs to produce reasoning chains that are highly consistent and grounded. Semantic reasoning and dynamic planning capabilities are crucial for an autonomous agent to perform complex navigation tasks in unknown environments. It requires a large amount of common-sense knowledge, that humans possess, to succeed in these tasks. We present SayNav, a new approach that leverages human knowledge from Large Language Models (LLMs) for efficient generalization to complex navigation tasks in unknown large-scale environments. SayNav uses a novel grounding mechanism, that incrementally builds a 3D scene graph of the explored environment as inputs to LLMs, for generating feasible and contextually appropriate high-level plans for navigation. The LLM-generated plan is then executed by a pre-trained low-level planner, that treats each planned step as a short-distance point-goal navigation sub-task. SayNav dynamically generates step-by-step instructions during navigation and continuously refines future steps based on newly perceived information. We evaluate SayNav on multi-object navigation (MultiON) task, that requires the agent to utilize a massive amount of human knowledge to efficiently search multiple different objects in an unknown environment. We also introduce a benchmark dataset for MultiON task employing ProcTHOR framework that provides large photo-realistic indoor environments with variety of objects. SayNav achieves state-of-the-art results and even outperforms an oracle based baseline with strong ground-truth assumptions by more than 8% in terms of success rate, highlighting its ability to generate dynamic plans for successfully locating objects in large-scale new environments. We present a Multimodal Backdoor Defense technique TIJO (Trigger Inversion using Joint Optimization). Recent work arXiv:2112.07668 has demonstrated successful backdoor attacks on multimodal models for the Visual Question Answering task. Their dual-key backdoor trigger is split across two modalities (image and text), such that the backdoor is activated if and only if the trigger is present in both modalities. We propose TIJO that defends against dual-key attacks through a joint optimization that reverse-engineers the trigger in both the image and text modalities. This joint optimization is challenging in multimodal models due to the disconnected nature of the visual pipeline which consists of an offline feature extractor, whose output is then fused with the text using a fusion module. The key insight enabling the joint optimization in TIJO is that the trigger inversion needs to be carried out in the object detection box feature space as opposed to the pixel space. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on the TrojVQA benchmark, where TIJO improves upon the state-of-the-art unimodal methods from an AUC of 0.6 to 0.92 on multimodal dual-key backdoors. Furthermore, our method also improves upon the unimodal baselines on unimodal backdoors. We present ablation studies and qualitative results to provide insights into our algorithm such as the critical importance of overlaying the inverted feature triggers on all visual features during trigger inversion. How do we design an AI system that is intended to act as a communication bridge between two user communities with different mental models and vocabularies? Skillsync is an interactive environment that engages employers (companies) and training providers (colleges) in a sustained dialogue to help them achieve the goal of building a training proposal that successfully meets the needs of the employers and employees. We used a variation of participatory design to elicit requirements for developing AskJill, a question-answering agent that explains how Skillsync works and thus acts as a communication bridge between company and college users. Our study finds that participatory design was useful in guiding the requirements gathering and eliciting user questions for the development of AskJill. Our results also suggest that the two Skillsync user communities perceived glossary assistance as a key feature that AskJill needs to offer, and they would benefit from such a shared vocabulary.

The problem of community-level information pathway prediction (CLIPP) aims at predicting the transmission trajectory of content across online communities. A successful solution to CLIPP holds significance as it facilitates the distribution of valuable information to a larger audience and prevents the proliferation of misinformation. Notably, solving CLIPP is non-trivial as inter-community relationships and influence are unknown, information spread is multi-modal, and new content and new communities appear over time. In this work, we address CLIPP by collecting large-scale, multi-modal datasets to examine the diffusion of online YouTube videos on Reddit. We analyze these datasets to construct community influence graphs (CIGs) and develop a novel dynamic graph framework, INPAC (Information Pathway Across Online Communities), which incorporates CIGs to capture the temporal variability and multi-modal nature of video propagation across communities. Content moderation is the process of flagging content based on pre-defined platform rules. There has been a growing need for AI moderators to safeguard users as well as protect the mental health of human moderators from traumatic content. While prior works have focused on identifying hateful/offensive language, they are not adequate for meeting the challenges of content moderation since 1) moderation decisions are based on violation of rules, which subsumes detection of offensive speech, and 2) such rules often differ across communities which entails an adaptive solution. We propose to study the challenges of content moderation by introducing a multilingual dataset of 1.8 Million Reddit comments spanning 56 subreddits in English, German, Spanish and French. We perform extensive experimental analysis to highlight the underlying challenges and suggest related research problems such as cross-lingual transfer, learning under label noise (human biases), transfer of moderation models, and predicting the violated rule. Our dataset and analysis can help better prepare for the challenges and opportunities of auto moderation.
