BACKGROUND: Serial serum hormone measurements and transvaginal ultrasound are reliable measures to predict ovulation. These measures are inconvenient and expensive therefore, basal body temperature charting (BBT) and urine ovulation predictor kits (OPK) for luteinizing hormone are often used to determine the 6-day fertile window. However, BBT does not clearly change until 1-2 days after ovulation. Additionally, while OPK can indicate positivity prior to ovulation, false readings are common. A novel alternative approach involves measuring electrolyte trends in cervical mucus using electrical impedance spectroscopy. Cervical mucus electrolyte measurements are associated with hormone level changes during the menstrual cycle. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of cervical mucus electrical impedance and basal body temperature. We sought to determine if cervical mucus electrolyte measurements provided improved detection of the ovulation day and therefore, improve fertility timing for women. METHODS: 14 healthy women between 18 and 44 years of age with normal menstrual cycles were enrolled in the Observational Study. Participants measured BBT and cervical mucus electrical impedance daily for 3 menstrual cycles using Kegg (Lady Technologies Inc. San Francisco, California, USA). Ovulation date for each cycle was confirmed by measuring hormone levels in urine and serum, and by vaginal ultrasound. RESULTS: Electrical impedance was significantly different between the follicular phase versus ovulatory date (p = 0.007) and between the luteal phase versus the ovulatory date (p = 0.007). A significant difference in the rate of change of cervical impedance measurements in the pre-ovulatory follicular phase was found compared to BBT (p = 0.0225). The sensitivity (+ 7.14%), specificity (+ 20.35%), and accuracy (+ 17.59) to determine the 1-day fertility window was significantly higher using cervical mucus impedance compared to BBT. CONCLUSIONS: BBT is considered unreliable for evaluating ovulatory function. Cervical mucus electrical impedance offers a novel measure of electrolyte changes associated with hormone levels. We report that pre-ovulatory electrical impedance patterns demonstrated higher sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for determining the fertility window when compared to BBT. These findings suggest that changes in electrical impedance may provide an accurate method for predicting ovulation and for measuring ovulatory function.

BackgroundSub-thermoneutral housing increases facultative thermogenesis in mice, which may mask the pre-clinical efficacy of anti-obesity strategies that target energy expenditure (EE). Here, we quantified the impact of protonophore treatment on whole-body energetics in mice housed at 30°C.MethodsC57BL/6J mice (n = 48, 24M/24F) were housed at 24°C for 2 weeks; 32 (16M/16F) were then transitioned to 30°C for a further 4 weeks. Following 2 weeks acclimation at 30°C, mice (n = 16 per group, 8M/8F) received either normal (0 mg/L; Control) or supplemented (400 mg/L; 2,4-Dinitrophenol [DNP]) drinking water. Mice were singly housed in metabolic cages to determine total EE (TEE) and its components via respiratory gas exchange. Mitochondrial respiratory function of permeabilized liver tissue was determined by high-resolution respirometry.ResultsTransitioning mice from 24°C to 30°C reduced TEE and basal EE (BEE) by 16% and 41%, respectively (both P < 0.001). Compared to 30°C controls, TEE was 2.6 kcal/day greater in DNP-treated mice (95% CI: 1.6–3.6 kcal/day, P < 0.001), which was partly due to a 1.2 kcal/day higher BEE in DNP-treated mice (95% CI: 0.6–1.7 kcal/day, P < 0.001). The absolute TEE of 30°C DNP-treated mice was lower than that of mice housed at 24°C in the absence of DNP (DNP: 9.4 ± 0.7 kcal/day vs. 24°C control: 10.4 ± 1.5 kcal/day). DNP treatment reduced overall body fat of females by 2.9 percentage points versus sex-matched controls (95% CI: 1.3%–4.5%, P < 0.001), which was at least partly due to a reduction in inguinal white fat mass.ConclusionProtonophore treatment markedly increases EE in mice housed at 30°C. The magnitude of change in TEE of mice receiving protonophore treatment at 30°C was smaller than that brought about by transitioning mice from 24°C to 30°C, emphasizing that housing temperature must be considered when assessing anti-obesity strategies that target EE in mice.

Abstract Animal regeneration involves coordinated responses across cell types throughout the animal body. In endosymbiotic animals, whether and how symbionts react to host injury and how cellular responses are integrated across species remain unexplored. Here, we study the acoel Convolutriloba longifissura, which hosts symbiotic Tetraselmis sp. green algae and can regenerate entire bodies from tissue fragments. We show that animal injury causes a decline in the photosynthetic efficiency of the symbiotic algae, alongside two distinct, sequential waves of transcriptional responses in acoel and algal cells. The initial algal response is characterized by the upregulation of a cohort of photosynthesis-related genes, though photosynthesis is not necessary for regeneration. A conserved animal transcription factor, runt, is induced after injury and required for acoel regeneration. Knockdown of Cl-runt dampens transcriptional responses in both species and further reduces algal photosynthetic efficiency post-injury. Our results suggest that the holobiont functions as an integrated unit of biological organization by coordinating molecular networks across species through the runt-dependent animal regeneration program.

Large carrion beetles (Silphidae) are the focus of ongoing behavioral ecology, forensic, ecological, conservation, evolutionary, systematic, and other research, and were recently reclassified as a subfamily of Staphylinidae. Twenty-three analyses in 21 publications spanning the years 1927–2023 that are relevant to the question of the evolutionary origin and taxonomic classification of Silphidae are reviewed. Most of these analyses (20) found Silphidae nested inside Staphylinidae (an average of 4.38 branches deep), two found Silphidae in an ambiguous position, and one found Silphidae outside Staphylinidae, as sister to Hydrophilidae. There is strong evidence supporting the hypothesis that large carrion beetles evolved from within Staphylinidae and good justification for their classification as the subfamily Silphinae of the megadiverse, and apparently now monophyletic, Staphylinidae. Considerable uncertainty remains regarding the interrelationships and monophyly of many staphylinid subfamilies. Nonetheless, the subfamily Tachyporinae was found to be the sister of Silphinae in more analyses (7) than any other subfamily.

Abstract Investigating fundamental processes in biology requires the ability to ground broad questions in species‐specific natural history. This is particularly true in the study of behavior because an organism's experience of the environment will influence the expression of behavior and the opportunity for selection. Here, we provide a review of the natural history and behavior of burying beetles of the genus Nicrophorus to provide the groundwork for comparative work that showcases their remarkable behavioral and ecological diversity. Burying beetles have long fascinated scientists because of their well‐developed parenting behavior, exhibiting extended post‐hatching care of offspring that varies extensively within and across taxa. Despite the burgeoning success of burying beetles as a model system for the study of behavioral evolution, there has not been a review of their behavior, ecology, and evolution in over 25 years. To address this gap, we leverage a developing community of researchers who have contributed to a detailed knowledge of burying beetles to highlight the utility of Nicrophorus for investigating the causes and consequences of social and behavioral evolution.

The COVID-19 pandemic--coupled with ongoing prominent injustice related to race, poverty, healthcare, and education--has highlighted the interlocking and reinforcing nature of systemic oppression. Now more than ever, facilitators of experiential learning are galvanized to explore and deepen their understanding of systemic change and to enhance their teaching of justice concepts, perspectives, and skills. Advancing social justice was a part of the original vision for service-learning (Stanton et al., 1999). However, scholars have long identified the ways in which service-learning can perpetuate inequitable social hierarchies, be miseducative in teaching simplistic understandings of solutions to social problems, and not equip students to participate in social movements for justice (Eby, 1998; Mitchell and Latta, 2020). By incorporating critical pedagogy, action, and reflection in and beyond the classroom, "critical service-learning" seeks to increase understanding of oppression, redistribute power, and find solutions to social issues through community-campus partnerships (Mitchell, 2008; Santiago-Ortiz, 2019). However, many service-learning practitioners report uncertainty about how to take concrete steps to align their courses with justice orientated techniques and pedagogy. In order to address this need, students, staff, and faculty in Duke Service-Learning began creating a tool to support the implementation of critical pedagogy and justice in service-learning courses in 2016 (Stith et al., 2018). For the past 8 months an expanded group has worked to update that original tool. The resulting tool organizes course design choices into five themes: reckoning with systems, authentic relationships, redistribution of power, equitable classrooms & cognitive justice, and social change skills. The resulting tool generates concrete, actionable questions for service-learning and experiential learning to interrogate how their pedagogy and practices incorporate social, economic, environmental, and racial justice. Our article summarizes the advances in our understanding and of the literature on implementing justice aligned experiential education and links to the current version of our tool. Further, our article will summarize lessons learned from conversations with practitioners who use and reflect on the implications of the tool for their own pedagogy. We will also reflect on holding the tensions in balancing the various aspects of course designs and our commitments to anti-oppressive practices. Finally, we will reflect on further implications for service-learning and experiential education that the process of creating this tool has surfaced.

During the last glacial period, the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) underwent episodes of rapid iceberg discharge, recorded in ocean sediments as "Heinrich events" (HEs). Two competing models attempt to describe the stimulus for HEs via either internal ice sheet oscillations or external ocean-climate system forcing. We present a terrestrial record of HEs from the northeastern LIS that strongly supports ocean-climate forcing. Subglacial carbonate precipitates from Baffin Island record episodes of subglacial melting coincident with the three most recent HEs, resulting from acceleration of nearby marine-terminating ice streams. Synchronized ice stream acceleration over Baffin Island and Hudson Strait is inconsistent with internal ice sheet oscillations alone and indicates a shared ocean-climate stimulus to coordinate these different glaciological systems. Isotopic compositions of these precipitates record widespread subglacial groundwater connectivity beneath the LIS. Extensive basal melting and flushing of these aquifers during the last HE may have been a harbinger for terminal deglaciation.

In humans and animal models, Cesarean section (C-section) has been associated with alterations in the taxonomic structure of the gut microbiome. These changes in microbiota populations are hypothesized to impact immune, metabolic, and behavioral/neurologic systems and others. It is not clear if birth mode inherently changes the microbiome, or if C-section effects are context-specific and involve interactions with environmental and other factors. To address this and control for potential confounders, cecal microbiota from ~3 week old mice born by C-section (n = 16) versus natural birth (n = 23) were compared under matched conditions for housing, cross-fostering, diet, sex, and genetic strain. A total of 601 unique species were detected across all samples. Alpha diversity richness (i.e., how many species within sample; Chao1) and evenness/dominance (i.e., Shannon, Simpson, Inverse Simpson) metrics revealed no significant differences by birth mode. Beta diversity (i.e., differences between samples), as estimated with Bray-Curtis dissimilarities and Aitchison distances (using log[x + 1]-transformed counts), was also not significantly different (Permutational Multivariate ANOVA [PERMANOVA]). Only the abundance of Lachnoclostridium [Clostridium] scindens was found to differ using a combination of statistical methods (ALDEx2, DESeq2), being significantly higher in C-section mice. This microbe has been implicated in secondary bile acid production and regulation of glucocorticoid metabolism to androgens. From our results and the extant literature we conclude that C-section does not inherently lead to large-scale shifts in gut microbiota populations, but birth mode could modulate select bacteria in a context-specific manner: For example, involving factors associated with pre-, peri-, and postpartum environments, diet or host genetics.

Involving young refugees in the research process has significant potential to address current gaps in refugee research in a rigorous, equitable, and empowering way (Clark 2004; Haile, Meloni, and Rezaie 2020). This field note is a report on Voices of Refugee Youth, a research initiative in Pakistan and Rwanda that aims to build the evidence base for postprimary refugee education, while also increasing young refugees' access to and representation in this field of research. The purpose of this field note is to reflect critically on the participatory approach adopted by the initiative, whereby young refugees work as coresearchers who advise, collect data, and contribute to the deliverables. In the note we highlight the benefits of this approach, but also problematize it to offer valuable lessons about involving young refugees meaningfully in the research process. We conclude that participation must be approached with flexibility in order to facilitate different levels of participation, based on the skills or knowledge level of the young refugees in question. It is critical that participation is accompanied by rigorous training that responds to participants' contexts and experience levels and addresses ethical issues, such as positionalitybased bias.

A number of urban U.S. cities that were traditionally Black and underinvested are now becoming enclaves to whites and upper-middle-class people. Consequently, a growing body of research on schools and gentrification is emerging. While most of this research has focused on the shifts that neighborhoods and schools undergo due to gentrification, we know less about how school leaders make meaning of these impacts. This study draws on interviews with 26 principals in two gentrifying cities to examine the impacts of gentrification on schools. We find that school leaders understand gentrification's impacts on schools materially, epistemically, and affectively, and at the same time, these shifts complicate the work of school leaders. This study concludes with implications for future research.

Military and military veteran students enter higher education with a host of challenges related to their military service. As universities and colleges strive to address the needs of military and military student veterans, administrative and educational challenges must be addressed proactively to accommodate the specific needs of student veterans. Student services for military and military veteran students includes providing a veteran advisor, a veteran liaison, military-friendly policies, services, and resources. The authors discuss military-friendly student services supported and implemented through the development of a veteran-specific education track.

Low back pain poses a significant societal burden, with progressive intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) emerging as a pivotal contributor to chronic pain. Improved animal models of progressive IDD are needed to comprehensively investigate new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to managing IDD. Recent studies underscore the immune system’s involvement in IDD, particularly with regards to the role of immune privileged tissues such as the nucleus pulposus (NP) becoming an immune targeting following initial disc injury. We therefore hypothesized that generating an active immune response against NP antigens with an NP vaccine could significantly accelerate and refine an IDD animal model triggered by mechanical puncture of the disc. To address this question, rabbits were immunized against NP antigens following disc puncture, and the impact on development of progressive IDD was assessed radiographically, functionally, and histologically compared between vaccinated and non-vaccinated animals over a 12-week period. Immune responses to NP antigens were assessed by ELISA and Western blot. We found that the vaccine elicited strong immune responses against NP antigens, including a dominant ~37 kD antigen. Histologic evaluation revealed increases IDD in animals that received the NP vaccine plus disc puncture, compared to disc puncture and vaccine only animals. Imaging evaluation evidenced a decrease in disc height index and higher scores of disc degeneration in animals after disc punctures and in those animals that received the NP vaccine in addition to disc puncture. These findings therefore indicate that it is possible to elicit immune responses against NP antigens in adult animals, and that these immune responses may contribute to accelerated development of IDD in a novel immune-induced and accelerated IDD model.

Abstract The Southern Ocean regulates atmospheric CO2 and Earth's climate as a critical region for air‐sea gas exchange, delicately poised between being a CO2 source and sink. Here, we estimate how long a water mass has remained isolated from the atmosphere and utilize 14C/12C ratios (Δ14C) to trace the pathway and escape route of carbon sequestered in the deep ocean through the mixed layer to the atmosphere. The position of our core at the northern margin of the Southern Indian Ocean, tracks latitudinal shifts of the Southern Ocean frontal zones across the deglaciation. Our results suggest an expanded glacial Antarctic region trapped CO2, whereas deglacial expansion of the subantarctic permitted ventilation of the trapped CO2, contributing to a rapid atmospheric CO2 rise. We identify frontal positions as a key factor balancing CO2 outgassing versus sequestration in a region currently responsible for nearly half of global ocean CO2 uptake.

The correlation between obesity and cardiovascular disease has long been understood, yet scant investigations endeavored to determine the impact of an obesogenic diet on platelet activation or function. As platelets drive clot formation, the terminus of cardiovascular events, we aimed to elucidate the longitudinal effect of an obesogenic diet on platelet phenotype by assessing markers of platelet activation using flow cytometry. Male, weanling mice were fed either a Western diet (30% kcal sucrose, 40% kcal fat, 8.0% sodium) or Control diet (7% kcal sucrose, 10% kcal fat, 0.24% sodium). At 12, 16 and 20 weeks on diets, platelets were collected and stained to visualize glycoprotein Ibα (GPIbα), P-selectin and the conformationally active state of αIIbβ3 (a platelet specific integrin) after collagen stimulation. At all time points, a Western diet reduced GPIbα and αIIbβ3 expression in platelets broadly while P-selectin levels were unaffected. However, P-selectin was diminished by a Western diet in the GPIbα− subpopulation. Thus, a Western diet persistently primed platelets towards a blunted activation response as indicated by reduced active αIIbβ3 and P-selectin surface expression. This study provides a first look at the influence of diet on platelet activation and revealed that platelet activation is susceptible to dietary intervention.

Gentrification is happening in cities all across the United States. Consequently, some Black communities that were intentionally segregated and under-resourced are experiencing capital investments and demographic changes. These gentrification-induced racial and socioeconomic shifts impact many local institutions, namely school districts. Given this, there is an emerging body of research on schools and gentrification. However, less research has examined the actions of school districts as institutional actors in gentrification. This study examines how two school districts' actions mediate school gentrification. Using a theorization of gentrification as a process of racial capitalism, we draw on interviews with 26 principals across both districts. Our findings suggest that districts' actions influence school gentrification by mediating the movement of Black and other youth of color to various schools through cycles of differential investments across the districts. We conclude with implications for future research.

Abstract Molecular biology aims to understand cellular responses and regulatory dynamics in complex biological systems. However, these studies remain challenging in non-model species due to poor functional annotation of regulatory proteins. To overcome this limitation, we develop a multi-layer neural network that determines protein functionality directly from the protein sequence. We annotate kinases and phosphatases in Glycine max. We use the functional annotations from our neural network, Bayesian inference principles, and high resolution phosphoproteomics to infer phosphorylation signaling cascades in soybean exposed to cold, and identify Glyma.10G173000 (TOI5) and Glyma.19G007300 (TOT3) as key temperature regulators. Importantly, the signaling cascade inference does not rely upon known kinase motifs or interaction data, enabling de novo identification of kinase-substrate interactions. Conclusively, our neural network shows generalization and scalability, as such we extend our predictions to Oryza sativa, Zea mays, Sorghum bicolor, and Triticum aestivum. Taken together, we develop a signaling inference approach for non-model species leveraging our predicted kinases and phosphatases.

The first postpartum year presents threats to the mental health of birthing parents and obstacles to accessing care. Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) hold potential to increase postpartum mental healthcare access. However, DMHIs tend to promote limited engagement particularly when they are self-guided (when they do not involve contact with a provider). Yet, given that provider support is a limited resource, a balance must be struck between accessibility and intervention intensity (i.e., involving more human contact). Towards achieving this balance, this analysis seeks to identify characteristics that are associated with a reported preference for a human-guided introduction to digital resources aimed at promoting postpartum mental health. In a sample of largely White, non-Latinx, employed, married, and graduate school-educated individuals, multivariate logistic regression revealed that age (p = 0.0095), level of postpartum functioning (p = 0.0057), depression symptoms (p = 0.0099), and anxiety symptoms (p = 0.03) were associated with guide preference. Specifically, more anxious or lower-postpartum-functioning individuals were more likely to report preferring a guide while older or more depressed individuals were less likely to report preferring a guide. These findings can inform clinical recommendations surrounding who is most likely to engage with, and thus benefit from, exclusively self-guided DMHIs during the postpartum period.

Background Optimizing access to high-quality scientific journals has become an important priority for academic departments, including the ability to read the scientific literature and the ability to afford to publish papers in those journals. In this contribution, we assess the question of whether institutional investment in scientific journals aligns with the journals where researchers send their papers for publication, and where they serve as unpaid reviewers and editors. Methods We assembled a unique suite of information about the publishing habits of our Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, including summaries of 3,540 journal publications by 35 faculty members. These data include economic costs of journals to institutions and to authors, benefits to authors in terms of journal prestige and citation rates, and considerations of ease of reading access for individuals both inside and outside the university. This dataset included data on institutional costs, including subscription pricing (rarely visible to scholars), and “investment” by scholars in supporting journals, such as time spent as editors and reviewers. Results Our results highlighted the complex set of relationships between these factors, and showed that institutional costs often do not match well with payoffs in terms of benefits to researchers (e.g., citation rate, prestige of journal, ease of access). Overall, we advocate for greater cost-benefit transparency to help compare different journals and different journal business models; such transparency would help both researchers and their institutions in investing wisely the limited resources available to academics.

More than tools for managing physical and digital objects, museum collection management systems (CMS) serve as platforms for structuring, integrating, and making accessible the rich data embodied by natural history collections. Here we describe Arctos, a scalable community solution for managing and publishing global biological, geological, and cultural collections data for research and education. Specific goals are to: (1) Describe the core features and implementation of Arctos for a broad audience with respect to the biodiversity informatics principles that enable high quality research; (2) Highlight the unique aspects of Arctos; (3) Illustrate Arctos as a model for supporting and enhancing the Digital Extended Specimen concept; and (4) Emphasize the role of the Arctos community for improving data discovery and enabling cross-disciplinary, integrative studies within a sustainable governance model. In addition to detailing Arctos as both a community of museum professionals and a collection database platform, we discuss how Arctos achieves its richly annotated data by creating a web of knowledge with deep connections between catalog records and derived or associated data. We also highlight the value of Arctos as an educational resource. Finally, we present the financial model of fiscal sponsorship by a nonprofit organization, implemented in 2022, to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of Arctos.

ABSTRACT Early detection of osteoporosis using advanced imaging is imperative to the successful treatment and prevention of high morbidity fractures in aging patients. In this preclinical study, we aimed to compare dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) and quantitative computed tomography (QCT) to quantify bone mineral density (BMD) changes in the sheep lumbar spine. We also aimed to determine the relationship of BMD to microarchitecture in the same animals as an estimate of imaging modality precision. Osteoporosis was induced in 10 ewes via laparoscopic ovariectomy and administration of high‐dose corticosteroids. We performed DXA and QCT imaging to measure areal BMD (aBMD) and trabecular volumetric BMD (Tb.vBMD)/cortical vBMD (Ct.vBMD), respectively, at baseline (before ovariectomy) and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after ovariectomy. Iliac crest bone biopsies were collected at each time point for micro‐computed tomography (microCT) analysis; bone volume fraction (BV/TV), trabecular number (Tb.N), thickness (Tb.Th), and spacing (Tb.Sp) were reported. aBMD and Tb.vBMD both decreased significantly by 3 and 6 months (p

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are sensitive to perturbations and adversarial attacks. One hypothesized solution to adversarial robustness is to align manifolds in the embedded space of neural networks with biologically grounded manifolds. Recent state-of-the-art works that emphasize learning robust neural representations, rather than optimizing for a specific target task like classification, support the idea that researchers should investigate this hypothesis. While works have shown that fine-tuning ANNs to coincide with biological vision does increase robustness to both perturbations and adversarial attacks, these works have relied on proprietary datasets—the lack of publicly available biological benchmarks makes it difficult to evaluate the efficacy of these claims. Here, we deliver a curated dataset consisting of biological representations of images taken from two commonly used computer vision datasets, ImageNet and COCO, that can be easily integrated into model training and evaluation. Specifically, we take a large functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) dataset (BOLD5000), preprocess it into representational dissimilarity matrices (RDMs), and establish an infrastructure that anyone can use to train models with biologically grounded representations. Using this infrastructure, we investigate the representations of several popular neural networks and find that as networks have been optimized for tasks, their correspondence with biological fidelity has decreased. Additionally, we use a previously unexplored graph-based technique, Fiedler partitioning, to showcase the viability of the biological data, and the potential to extend these analyses by extending RDMs into Laplacian matrices. Overall, our findings demonstrate the potential of utilizing our new biological benchmark to effectively enhance the robustness of models.

BACKGROUND: Internal iliac pseudoaneurysm is a rare and often asymptomatic finding. Diagnosing pseudoaneurysms are critical, as rupture may lead to shock and carries a high mortality rate for patient and fetus. CASE: A G2P1 female at 34 4/7 weeks pregnancy is found to have a ruptured right internal iliac pseudoaneurysm. CT angiogram confirmed the diagnosis after routine prenatal ultrasound for abdominal pain raised concern for the finding. Primary caesarian delivery was performed with vascular surgery for concurrent delivery and pseudoaneurysm coiling. CONCLUSION: Pseudoaneurysm should be considered in diagnosis for pelvic or abdominal pain in pregnant women. A complex heterogenous adnexal mass with blood flow in pregnancy warrants further studies including CT angiogram.

Arthropods at high latitudes and elevations are likely to be vulnerable to effects from climate change such as increased temperatures and shifting vegetation boundaries. Though range shifts northwards and upslope have been reported for many arthropod taxa in temperate latitudes, baseline data needed to track such changes are scarce at northern latitudes. We investigated the influence of climate and vegetation cover on the abundance, diversity, and species composition of pollinators and epigeic arthropods along an elevation gradient in Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska. We compared arthropods across three habitat types: low-elevation forest, mid-elevation shrubs, and high-elevation tundra along five replicate transects over three years. We collected 35,473 arthropods representing 510 species. Arthropod communities differed distinctly across the three habitat types, with tundra having the highest number of strong indicators and unique species. Elevation, air temperature, and vegetation structure were strong drivers for the ordination of sites. As treeline and shrubline shift upslope with climate change, we predict that distributions of some arthropods will shift to track these habitat boundaries and that tundra-associated arthropods will be most vulnerable as their habitat shrinks. Long-term monitoring of arthropods along elevation gradients at northern latitudes is needed to detect such declines.

The community school concept has become a popular school reform model that has gained traction in urban school systems. To date, however, few studies have looked across contexts to see how various communities are conceptualizing the reform: the aims that are articulated, the partnerships that are being created, or sustainability plans. In this study, we explore these questions through an analysis of 32 funded proposals from the federal Full-Service Community Schools grant program. We examine the goals, aims, and plans of reformers and ask questions about governance, inclusion, and sustainability, situating our analysis in the policy implementation literature.

Purpose: This paper considers an undergraduate student's coming to, and use of, an ethnographic approach as a particularly appropriate way in which to investigate aspects of life in a British hospital school. Such schools occupy a liminal position with regard to education policy and provision. There is a paucity of research on hospital schools and particularly of the experiences and perceptions of teachers who work in them. This lack of research has implications for policy development. The paper therefore offers some rare insights into one of these schools. It also gives insights into how ethnography can challenge taken for granted assumptions. Design/methodology/approach: An ethnographic participant observer approach was adopted. Findings: This paper gives insights into how ethnography can challenge researchers' taken for granted assumptions as well as offering illustration of some aspects of life in schools. Originality/value: Although there is an extensive literature on uses of ethnography, this approach has rarely been applied to hospital schools. The paper makes a small step towards addressing this lack.

An increasing number of central cities across the U.S. are experiencing a growth in white middle-class population, which is associated with gentrification in historically disinvested and racially segregated urban neighborhoods. These changing neighborhood dynamics are starting to shift the context of urban schooling in some districts across the nation. While we know that racial and socioeconomic demographic shifts are associated with neighborhood and school gentrification, there is little conceptual clarity about how school gentrification unfolds over time and the varying conditions of schools in gentrified neighborhoods. To advance scholarship on the topic, researchers need an organizing framework. This study addresses this gap by drawing on existing research, 16 years of Census and American Community Survey data, and 6 years of district data in Austin, Texas. Highlighting Austin, an urban city with growing neighborhood gentrification, we put forth a typology to explain the experiences of schools in the district. We conclude with implications for future research.

Abstract Introduction Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a rare, heterogeneous group of non-Hodgkin lymphomas characterized by various clinical, molecular, and histopathologic features of the skin. Variants of CTCL share many clinical features with common inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, making accurate and early diagnosis challenging in clinical settings. Inappropriate treatment or a delay in diagnosis can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. Here, we report findings from an online survey that investigated dermatology community practice, knowledge, and education surrounding CTCL. Methods An electronic survey of ten questions was developed and approved by physician experts in CTCL to assess experiences in diagnosing and treating CTCL among healthcare providers (HCPs). The survey was deployed to 10,600 US dermatology HCPs, including medical doctors (MDs), doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs), nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician assistants (PAs) and excluding HCPs associated with CTCL centers of excellence. Results Among 44 HCPs who responded and were eligible for inclusion, 82% had diagnosed between one and ten CTCL cases in the last 5 years. Most respondents (91%) reported that they include CTCL in their differential diagnoses after patients do not respond to treatment of more common conditions. Patients with CTCL were frequently diagnosed with other inflammatory dermatoses—most commonly dermatitis and psoriasis—before a CTCL diagnosis, and many were treated with ineffective therapies for years. The most common length of time before a CTCL diagnosis was made was between 1 and 3 years, though 16% of HCPs reported that patients were treated for other diseases or skin conditions for ≥ 5 years. Two-thirds of HCPs agreed that further education surrounding CTCL is needed. Conclusions Given the infrequency of CTCL and its similar presentation to other common dermatologic conditions, increased education of CTCL is needed in the dermatology community to improve patient outcomes.

Abstract Background The infrapatellar fat pad (IFP) is the largest adipose deposit in the knee; however, its contributions to the homeostasis of this organ remain undefined. To determine the influence of the IFP and its associated synovium (IFP/synovium complex or IFP/SC) on joint health, this study evaluated the progression of osteoarthritis (OA) following excision of this unit in a rodent model of naturally-occurring disease. Methods Male Dunkin-Hartley guinea pigs (n=18) received surgical removal of the IFP in one knee at 3 months of age; contralateral knees received sham surgery as matched internal controls. Mobility and gait assessments were performed prior to IFP/SC removal and monthly thereafter. Animals were harvested at 7 months of age. Ten set of these knees were processed for microcomputed tomography (microCT), histopathology, transcript expression analyses, and immunohistochemistry (IHC); 8 sets of knees were dedicated to microCT and biomechanical testing (material properties of knee joints tissues and anterior drawer laxity). Results Fibrous connective tissue (FCT) developed in place of the native adipose depot. Gait demonstrated no significant differences between IFP/SC removal and contralateral hindlimbs. MicroCT OA scores were improved in knees containing the FCT. Quantitatively, IFP/SC-containing knees had more osteophyte development and increased trabecular volume bone mineral density (vBMD) in femora and tibiae. Histopathology confirmed maintenance of articular cartilage structure, proteoglycan content, and chondrocyte cellularity in FCT-containing knees. Transcript analyses revealed decreased expression of adipose-related molecules and select inflammatory mediators in FCTs compared to IFP/SCs. This was verified via IHC for two key inflammatory agents. The medial articular cartilage in knees with native IFP/SCs showed an increase in equilibrium modulus, which correlated with increased amounts of magnesium and phosphorus. Discussion/conclusion Formation of the FCT resulted in reduced OA-associated changes in both bone and cartilage. This benefit may be associated with: a decrease in inflammatory mediators at transcript and protein levels; and/or improved biomechanical properties. Thus, the IFP/SC may play a role in the pathogenesis of knee OA in this strain, with removal prior to disease onset appearing to have short-term benefits.
