- Abstract
Remote experiment with WEST tokamak in CEA Cadarache France from the ITER Remote Experiment Centre (REC) in Japan was successfully carried out on November 2018. The construction of the REC was carried out at the Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) under the agreement between the Government of Japan and the European Atomic Energy Community for the joint implementation of the Broader Approach (BA) activities in the field of fusion energy research. First, WEST and REC sites were connected via broad band networks, that are SINET5 (Tokyo-London: 20 Gbps), GÉANT (London-Paris: 100 Gbps) and RENATER (Paris-Cadarache: 10 Gbps), over about 10000 km of transmission path length. The partners network (Partners Zone) for remote participants was used on the WEST side. It is accessible through a firewall and is separated from WEST internal networks by a second firewall. The WEST Portal in the Partners Zone allows accessing a set of information and tools such as the machine status and the experiment logbooks. The Pulse schedule editor is also available by login onto the Partner Zone server (Altair). The remote experiment was devoted to test the ITER plasma-facing components and their shaping under high heat flux. It started by the pulse preparation in REC, where the remote session leader edited the pulses schedule based on the communication between REC and WEST control room via VC system. After the approval of the Pulse Schedule by Engineer in Charge in WEST, discharges were success- fully executed repeatedly with modified scenario based on intershot analysis. The large video wall (LVW) in the REC room, displayed the near-real time countdown of the plasma discharge, a video of plasma generated in WEST tokamak, the live data of the time trace of the main parameters of the plasma, such as the current and the plasma density, in addition to the view of the video conference system. In the intershot period, data analyses were carried out on Applications server located in the Partner Zone. Full functions required for the remote experiment were successfully demonstrated, which are the pulse prepa- ration, communications between local and remote sites, live monitoring of the data and post-pulse data view and analyses. In order to become more effective for these functions, it was clarified that adequate data trans- ferring methods and system are required, especially for the live data and the large volume result data. It was also clarified that the LVW in the REC was very effective to share the information between REC and WEST. The first test of remote experiment with WEST, ~10000 km away from REC, like ITER, has been successfully completed. By this test, technical requirements emerged for more effective remote participation. Those are how to get the near real time data to show the live data in REC, how to view and analyze the large volume data through the limited network capability, and how to communicate with the on-site colleagues. - Abstract
Integrated modeling (IM) of present experiments and future tokamak reactors requires the provision of computational resources and numerical tools capable of simulating multiscale spatial phenomena as well as fast transient events and relatively slow plasma evolution within a reasonably short computational time. Recent progress in the implementation of the new computational resources for fusion applications in Europe based on modern supercomputer technologies (supercomputer MARCONI-FUSION), in the optimization and speedup of the EU fusion-related first-principle codes, and in the development of a basis for physics codes/modules integration into a centrally maintained suite of IM tools achieved within the EUROfusion Consortium is presented. Physics phenomena that can now be reasonably modelled in various areas (core turbulence and magnetic reconnection, edge and scrape-off layer physics, radio-frequency heating and current drive, magnetohydrodynamic model, reflectometry simulations) following successful code optimizations and parallelization are briefly described. Development activities in support to IM are summarized. They include support to (1) the local deployment of the IM infrastructure and access to experimental data at various host sites, (2) the management of releases for sophisticated IM workflows involving a large number of components, and (3) the performance optimization of complex IM workflows., This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium and has received funding from the Euratom research and training programme 2014 to 2018 under grant agreement 633053. A selection of achievements and first physics results are presented of the European Integrated Tokamak Modelling Task Force (EFDA ITM-TF) simulation framework, which aims to provide a standardized platform and an integrated modelling suite of validated numerical codes for the simulation and prediction of a complete plasma discharge of an arbitrary tokamak. The framework developed by the ITM-TF, based on a generic data structure including both simulated and experimental data, allows for the development of sophisticated integrated simulations (workflows) for physics application.The equilibrium reconstruction and linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability simulation chain was applied, in particular, to the analysis of the edgeMHDstability of ASDEX Upgrade type-I ELMy H-mode discharges and ITER hybrid scenario, demonstrating the stabilizing effect of an increased Shafranov shift on edge modes. Interpretive simulations of a JET hybrid discharge were performed with two electromagnetic turbulence codes within ITM infrastructure showing the signature of trapped-electron assisted ITG turbulence. A successful benchmark among five EC beam/ray-tracing codes was performed in the ITM framework for an ITER inductive scenario for different launching conditions from the equatorial and upper launcher, showing good agreement of the computed absorbed power and driven current. Selected achievements and scientific workflow applications targeting key modelling topics and physics problems are also presented, showing the current status of the ITM-TF modelling suite. In a previous study the odour of dog faeces has been demonstrated to induce a food repulsion in sheep tested indoor (Arnould and Signoret, in press). The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness as food repellent of dog faeces in sheep (Ovis aries), but also in roedeer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) in pasture situation. In the first experiment, 6 sheep were placed for 2 h 30 in a 12 x 12m pen. On 2 patches of 1 m2 each, the grass had been sprayed with a dilution of dog faeces in water. One sheep was observed only once grazing in a treated area versus 21 times (and all the 6 sheep) on the 2 control patches of 1 m2 sprayed with water. In 4 additional trials, leaves of freshly cut yoke-elm (Car pinus betulus) branches placed in the pen and sprayed with dog faeces were not browsed contrary to control ones that were totally eaten after 1 h trials. In the second experiment, oak (Quercus sp.) branches spread with diluted faeces were similarly not eaten by a group of 6 roedeer. The repulsion was still effective five days after spraying the leaves. In the third experiment, 3 groups of red deer living in a pasture, were tested by presenting their daily ration of barley together with the odour of dog faeces (in pans underneath). Only one out of the 61 deer tested ate a few grains of barley, and only in 3 out of the 7 trials. The odour of dog faecal matter had a food repellent effect on the 3 species of ungulates tested, and animals did not habituate to it over 3 to 7 successive daily trials. The adaptive value of this phenomenon is discussed., Lors d’une étude préalable, le fort pouvoir répulsif des excréments de Chien a été mis en évidence chez des ovins testés de manière standardisée (Arnould et Signoret, sous presse). Dans le présent travail nous avons étudié, en situation de pâturage, l’activité répulsive des fèces de Chien sur le comportement alimentaire du Mouton (O vis aries), du Chevreuil (Capreolus capreolus) et du Cerf (Cervus elaphus). Dans la première expérience, 6 moutons ont été placés, durant 2 h 30, dans un enclos de 12 x 12 m où 2 zones d’un m2 ont été arrosées avec une solution diluée de fèces de Chien. L’une de ces zones a été broutée une seule fois, alors que les 2 zones témoins d’un m2, arrosées d’eau, l’ont été 21 fois au total (et par les 6 moutons). Dans 4 épreuves supplémentaires, des branches de Charme (Car pinus betulus), fraîchement coupées, trempées dans une solution de fèces n’ont pas été consommées alors que des branches témoins l’ont été complètement après 1 h d’épreuve. Dans la seconde expérience, réalisée sur un lot de 6 chevreuils, des résultats similaires ont été obtenus. Aucun des individus n’a consommé de branches de Chêne (Quercus sp.) trempées dans une solution de fèces et 5 jours après avoir traité les branches, la répulsion était toujours présente. Dans la troisième expérience, 3 lots de cerfs en enclos ont été testés lors de leur alimentation journalière. Une dilution de fèces de Chien était placée, sous leur ration d’Orge, à l’intérieur de l’auge. Un seul individu sur les 61 testés a consommé quelques grains d’Orge, et seulement lors de 3 des 7 épreuves. L’odeur des matières fécales du Chien a donc un effet répulsif sur les 3 espèces testées et les animaux ne s’habituent pas à cette odeur. International audience; The European Integrated Tokamak Modelling Task Force (ITM-TF) is developing a new type of fully modular and flexible integrated tokamak simulator, which will allow a large variety of simulation types. This ambitious goal requires new concepts of data structure and workflow organisation, which are described for the first time in this paper. The backbone of the system is a physics-and workflow-oriented data structure which allows for the deployment of a fully modular and flexible workflow organisation. The data structure is designed to be generic for any tokamak device and can be used to address physics simulation results, experimental data (including description of subsystem hardware) and engineering issues.

It is currently thought that young adults are at increasing risk of exposure to deleterious sources of noise. To test this possibility we have assessed hearing status of young French men aged between 18 and 24 years in 1997 and study risk factors of deafness in a cross-sectional epidemiological study at selection centres for aptitudes to National Service.During the time of the study, 1208 subjects were examined. For each subject, data of an interview, an otoscopy and audiograms were collected. We compared hearing thresholds between subjects with different noise exposures and we determined risk factors of deafness in this population.The prevalence of hearing loss was 9% at medium frequencies (0.5-2 kHz) and 15% at high frequencies (4-8 kHz).We found that 60% of the subjects were regularly exposed to at least one source of loud noise. Acoustic trauma (6%) mostly explained hearing losses. Repeated episodes of otitis media in childhood (17%) also emerged as an important risk factor apparently due to increased sensitivity to noise. In subjects with antecedent of otitis media, hearing impairments were significant in personal stereo users (1 hour per day) (p0.001), in those who went to discos and rock concerts (2 times per month) (p=0.01) and in those who worked in noisy places (p=0.01). In contrast, in subjects without antecedent of otitis, we found no difference in hearing thresholds between noise exposed and non noise exposed subjects.Loud sound exposure is a true risk factor of early deafness in subjects that had had repeated episodes of otitis media in childhood. This study stresses the need for both prevention policies and information of health professionals and practitioners.
