High-redshift radio(-loud) galaxies (H$z$RGs) are massive galaxies with powerful radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and serve as beacons for protocluster identification. However, the interplay between H$z$RGs and the large-scale environment remains unclear. To understand the connection between H$z$RGs and the surrounding obscured star formation, we investigated the overdensity and spatial distribution of submillimeter-bright galaxies (SMGs) in the field of 4C\,23.56, a well-known H$z$RG at $z=2.48$. We used SCUBA-2 data ($\sigma\,{\sim}\,0.6$\,mJy) to estimate the $850\,{\rm \mu m}$ source number counts and examine the radial and azimuthal overdensities of the $850\,{\rm \mu m}$ sources in the vicinity of the H$z$RG. The angular distribution of SMGs is inhomogeneous around the H$z$RG 4C\,23.56, with fewer sources oriented along the radio jet. We also find a significant overdensity of bright SMGs (${\rm S}_{850\rm\,\mu m}\geq5\,$mJy). Faint and bright SMGs exhibit different spatial distributions. The former are concentrated in the core region, while the latter prefer the outskirts of the H$z$RG field. High-resolution observations show that the seven brightest SMGs in our sample are intrinsically bright, suggesting that the overdensity of bright SMGs is less likely due to the source multiplicity., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables, accepted to A&A

The development of low-frequency radio astronomy experiments for detecting 21-cm line emission from hydrogen presents new opportunities for creative solutions to the challenge of characterizing an antenna beam pattern. The Array of Long Baseline Antennas for Taking Radio Observations from the Seventy-ninth parallel (ALBATROS) is a new radio interferometer sited in the Canadian high Arctic that aims to map Galactic foregrounds at frequencies below $\sim$30 MHz. We present PteroSoar, a custom-built hexacopter outfitted with a transmitter, that will be used to characterize the beam patterns of ALBATROS and other experiments. The PteroSoar drone hardware is motivated by the need for user-servicing at remote sites and environmental factors that are unique to the high Arctic. In particular, magnetic heading is unreliable because the magnetic field lines near the north pole are almost vertical. We therefore implement moving baseline real time kinematic (RTK) positioning with two GPS units to obtain heading solutions with $\sim$1$^\circ$ accuracy. We present a preliminary beam map of an ALBATROS antenna, thus demonstrating successful PteroSoar operation in the high Arctic.

In this paper we present the results of a blind survey for compact sources in 243 Galaxy clusters that were identified using the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (tSZ). The survey was carried out at 90 GHz using MUSTANG2 on the Green Bank telescope and achieved a $5\sigma$ detection limit of 1 mJy in the center of each cluster. We detected 24 discrete sources. The majority (18) of these correspond to known radio sources, and of these, 5 show signs of significant variability, either with time or in spectral index. The remaining sources have no clear counterparts at other wavelengths. Searches for galaxy clusters via the tSZ effect strongly rely on observations at 90 GHz, and the sources found have the potential to bias mass estimates of clusters. We compare our results to the simulation Websky that can be used to estimate the source contamination in galaxy cluster catalogs. While the simulation showed a good match to our observations at the clusters' centers, it does not match our source distribution further out. Sources over 104" from a cluster's center bias the tSZ signal high, for some of our sources, by over 50%. When averaged over the whole cluster population the effect is smaller but still at a level of 1 to 2%. The Mapper of the IGM Spin Temperature (MIST) is a new ground-based, single-antenna, radio experiment attempting to detect the global 21 cm signal from the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn. A significant challenge in this measurement is the frequency-dependence, or chromaticity, of the antenna beam directivity. MIST observes with the antenna above the soil and without a metal ground plane, and the beam directivity is sensitive to the electrical characteristics of the soil. In this paper, we use simulated observations with MIST to study how the detection of the global 21 cm signal from Cosmic Dawn is affected by the soil and the MIST beam directivity. We simulate observations using electromagnetic models of the directivity computed for single- and two-layer models of the soil. We test the recovery of the Cosmic Dawn signal with and without beam chromaticity correction applied to the simulated data. We find that our single-layer soil models enable a straightforward recovery of the signal even without chromaticity correction. Two-layer models increase the beam chromaticity and make the recovery more challenging. However, for the model in which the bottom soil layer has a lower electrical conductivity than the top layer, the signal can be recovered even without chromaticity correction. For the other two-layer models, chromaticity correction is necessary for the recovery of the signal and the accuracy requirements for the soil parameters vary between models. We present fluxes and light curves for a population of asteroids at millimeter (mm) wavelengths, detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) over 18, 000 deg2 of the sky using data from 2017 to 2021. We utilize high cadence maps, which can be used in searching for moving objects such as asteroids and trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs), as well as for studying transients. We detect 160 asteroids with a signal-to-noise of at least 5 in at least one of the ACT observing bands, which are centered near 90, 150, and 220 GHz. For each asteroid, we compare the ACT measured flux to predicted fluxes from the Near Earth Asteroid Thermal Model (NEATM) fit to WISE data. We confirm previous results that detected a deficit of flux at millimeter wavelengths. Moreover, we report a spectral characteristic to this deficit, such that the flux is relatively lower at 150 and 220 GHz than at 90 GHz. The galaxy cluster Zwicky 3146 is a sloshing cool core cluster at $z{=}0.291$ that in SZ imaging does not appear to exhibit significant pressure substructure in the intracluster medium (ICM). We perform a surface brightness fluctuation analysis via Fourier amplitude spectra on SZ (MUSTANG-2) and X-ray (XMM-Newton) images of this cluster. These surface brightness fluctuations can be deprojected to infer pressure and density fluctuations from the SZ and X-ray data, respectively. In the central region (Ring 1, $r < 100^{\prime\prime} = 440$ kpc, in our analysis) we find fluctuation spectra that suggest injection scales around 200 kpc ($\sim 140$ kpc from pressure fluctuations and $\sim 250$ kpc from density fluctuations). When comparing the pressure and density fluctuations in the central region, we observe a change in the effective thermodynamic state from large to small scales, from isobaric (likely due to the slow sloshing) to adiabatic (due to more vigorous motions). By leveraging scalings from hydrodynamical simulations, we find an average 3D Mach number $\approx0.5$. The Hydrogen Intensity and Real-time Analysis eXperiment (HIRAX) aims to improve constraints on the dark energy equation of state through measurements of large-scale structure at high redshift ($0.8$700MHz. Noise temperature measurements of the HIRAX feeds were performed in a custom apparatus built at Yale. In this system, identical loads, one cryogenic and the other at room temperature, are used to take a differential (Y-factor) measurement from which the noise of the system is inferred. Several measurement sets have been conducted using the system, involving CHIME feeds as well as four of the HIRAX active feeds. These measurements give the first noise temperature measurements of the HIRAX feed, revealing a $\sim$60K noise temperature (relative to 30K target) with 40K peak- to-peak frequency-dependent features, and provide the first demonstration of feed repeatability. High fidelity radio interferometric data calibration that minimises spurious spectral structure in the calibrated data is essential in astrophysical applications, such as 21 cm cosmology, which rely on knowledge of the relative spectral smoothness of distinct astrophysical emission components to extract the signal of interest. Existing approaches to radio interferometric calibration have been shown to impart spurious spectral structure to the calibrated data if the sky model used to calibrate the data is incomplete. In this paper, we introduce BayesCal: a novel solution to the sky-model incompleteness problem in interferometric calibration, designed to enable high fidelity data calibration. The BayesCal data model supplements the a priori known component of the forward model of the sky with a statistical model for the missing and uncertain flux contribution to the data, constrained by a prior on the power in the model. We demonstrate how the parameters of this model can be marginalised out analytically, reducing the dimensionality of the parameter space to be sampled from and allowing one to sample directly from the posterior probability distribution of the calibration parameters. Additionally, we show how physically motivated priors derived from theoretical and measurement-based constraints on the spectral smoothness of the instrumental gains can be used to constrain the calibration solutions. In a companion paper, we apply this algorithm to simulated observations with a HERA-like array and demonstrate that it enables up to four orders of magnitude suppression of power in spurious spectral fluctuations relative to standard calibration approaches.

In a companion paper, we presented BayesCal, a mathematical formalism for mitigating sky-model incompleteness in interferometric calibration. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of BayesCal to calibrate the degenerate gain parameters of full-Stokes simulated observations with a HERA-like hexagonal close-packed redundant array, for three assumed levels of completeness of the a priori known component of the calibration sky model. We compare the BayesCal calibration solutions to those recovered by calibrating the degenerate gain parameters with only the a priori known component of the calibration sky model both with and without imposing physically motivated priors on the gain amplitude solutions and for two choices of baseline length range over which to calibrate. We find that BayesCal provides calibration solutions with up to four orders of magnitude lower power in spurious gain amplitude fluctuations than the calibration solutions derived for the same data set with the alternate approaches, and between $\sim10^7$ and $\sim10^{10}$ times smaller than in the mean degenerate gain amplitude on the full range of spectral scales accessible in the data. Additionally, we find that in the scenarios modelled only BayesCal has sufficiently high fidelity calibration solutions for unbiased recovery of the 21 cm power spectrum on large spectral scales ($k_\parallel \lesssim 0.15~h\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$). In all other cases, in the completeness regimes studied, those scales are contaminated.

Observation of redshifted 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is challenging due to contamination from the bright foreground sources that exceed the signal by several orders of magnitude. The removal of this very high foreground relies on accurate calibration to keep the intrinsic property of the foreground with frequency. Commonly employed calibration techniques for these experiments are the sky model-based and the redundant baseline-based calibration approaches. However, the sky model-based and redundant baseline-based calibration methods could suffer from sky-modeling error and array redundancy imperfection issues, respectively. In this work, we introduce the hybrid correlation calibration ("CorrCal") scheme, which aims to bridge the gap between redundant and sky-based calibration by relaxing redundancy of the array and including sky information into the calibration formalisms. We demonstrate the slight improvement of power spectra, about $-6\%$ deviation at the bin right on the horizon limit of the foreground wedge-like structure, relative to the power spectra before the implementation of "CorrCal" to the data from the Precision Array for Probing the Epoch of Reionization (PAPER) experiment, which was otherwise calibrated using redundant baseline calibration. This small improvement of the foreground power spectra around the wedge limit could be suggestive of reduced spectral structure in the data after "CorrCal" calibration, which lays the foundation for future improvement of the calibration algorithm and implementation method., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS in press

We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) AT2020xnd/ZTF20acigmel at $z=0.2433$ from $13$d to $269$d after explosion. AT2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT2018cow. AT2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching $L_{\nu}\approx8\times10^{29}$ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$ at 20GHz and $75$d post explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at $L_{X}\approx6\times10^{42}$ergs$^{-1}$. Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from the explosion's shock interaction with the environment we find that AT2020xnd launched a high-velocity outflow ($v\sim$0.1-0.2$c$) propagating into a dense circumstellar medium (effective $\dot M\approx10^{-3}M_{\rm{sol}}$yr$^{-1}$ for an assumed wind velocity of $v_w=1000$kms$^{-1}$). Similar to AT2018cow, the detected X-ray emission is in excess compared to the extrapolated synchrotron spectrum and constitutes a different emission component, possibly powered by accretion onto a newly formed black hole or neutron star. These properties make AT2020xnd a high-redshift analog to AT2018cow, and establish AT2020xnd as the fourth member of the class of optically-luminous FBOTs with luminous multi-wavelength counterparts., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. The Hydrogen Intensity and Real-time Analysis eXperiment (HIRAX) is a radio interferometer array currently in development, with an initial 256-element array to be deployed at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) Square Kilometer Array (SKA) site in South Africa. Each of the 6m, $f/0.23$ dishes will be instrumented with dual-polarisation feeds operating over a frequency range of 400-800 MHz. Through intensity mapping of the 21 cm emission line of neutral hydrogen, HIRAX will provide a cosmological survey of the distribution of large-scale structure over the redshift range of $0.775 < z < 2.55$ over $\sim$15,000 square degrees of the southern sky. The statistical power of such a survey is sufficient to produce $\sim$7 percent constraints on the dark energy equation of state parameter when combined with measurements from the Planck satellite. Additionally, HIRAX will provide a highly competitive platform for radio transient and HI absorber science while enabling a multitude of cross-correlation studies. Compact sources can cause scatter in the scaling relationships between the amplitude of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (tSZE) in galaxy clusters and cluster mass. Estimates of the importance of this scatter vary - largely due to limited data on sources in clusters at the frequencies at which tSZE cluster surveys operate. In this paper we present 90 GHz compact source measurements from a sample of 30 clusters observed using the MUSTANG2 instrument on the Green Bank Telescope. We present simulations of how a source's flux density, spectral index, and angular separation from the cluster's center affect the measured tSZE in clusters detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). By comparing the MUSTANG2 measurements with these simulations we calibrate an empirical relationship between 1.4 GHz flux densities from radio surveys and source contamination in ACT tSZE measurements. We find 3 per cent of the ACT clusters have more than a 20 per cent decrease in Compton-y but another 3 per cent have a 10 per cent increase in the Compton-y due to the matched filters used to find clusters. As sources affect the measured tSZE signal and hence the likelihood that a cluster will be detected, testing the level of source contamination in the tSZE signal using a tSZE selected catalog is inherently biased. We confirm this by comparing the ACT tSZE catalog with optically and X-ray selected cluster catalogs. We report a significant detection of the hot intergalactic medium in the filamentary bridge connecting the galaxy clusters Abell 399 and Abell 401. This result is enabled by a low-noise, high-resolution map of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich signal from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and Planck satellite. The ACT data provide the $1.65'$ resolution that allows us to clearly separate the profiles of the clusters, whose centres are separated by $37'$, from the gas associated with the filament. A model that fits for only the two clusters is ruled out compared to one that includes a bridge component at $>5\sigma$. Using a gas temperature determined from Suzaku X-ray data, we infer a total mass of $(3.3\pm0.7)\times10^{14}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ associated with the filament, comprising about $8\%$ of the entire Abell 399-Abell 401 system. We fit two phenomenological models to the filamentary structure; the favoured model has a width transverse to the axis joining the clusters of ${\sim}1.9\,\mathrm{Mpc}$. When combined with the Suzaku data, we find a gas density of $(0.88\pm0.24)\times10^{-4}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, considerably lower than previously reported. We show that this can be fully explained by a geometry in which the axis joining Abell 399 and Abell 401 has a large component along the line of sight, such that the distance between the clusters is significantly greater than the $3.2\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ projected separation on the plane of the sky. Recent observations from the MUSTANG2 instrument on the Green Bank Telescope have revealed evidence of enhanced long-wavelength emission in the dust spectral energy distribution (SED) in the Orion Molecular Cloud (OMC) 2/3 filament on 25" (0.1 pc) scales. Here we present a measurement of the SED on larger spatial scales (map size 0.5-3 degrees or 3-20 pc), at somewhat lower resolution (120", corresponding to 0.25 pc at 400 pc) using data from the Herschel satellite and Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). We then extend the 120"-scale investigation to other regions covered in the Herschel Gould Belt Survey (HGBS) specifically: the dense filaments in the southerly regions of Orion A; Orion B; and Serpens-S. Our dataset in aggregate covers approximately 10 square degrees, with continuum photometry spanning from 160um to 3mm. These OMC 2/3 data display excess emission at 3mm, though less (10.9% excess) than what is seen at higher resolution. Strikingly, we find that the enhancement is present even more strongly in the other filaments we targeted, with an average excess of 42.4% and 30/46 slices showing an inconsistency with the modified blackbody to at least 4{\sigma}. Applying this analysis to the other targeted regions, we lay the groundwork for future high-resolution analyses. Additionally, we also consider a two-component dust model motivated by Planck results and an amorphous grain dust model. While both of these have been proposed to explain deviations in emission from a generic modified blackbody (MBB), we find that they have significant drawbacks, requiring many spectral points or lacking experimental data coverage.

This paper describes the design, implementation, and verification of a test-bed for determining the noise temperature of radio antennas operating between 400-800MHz. The requirements for this test-bed were driven by the HIRAX experiment, which uses antennas with embedded amplification, making system noise characterization difficult in the laboratory. The test-bed consists of two large cylindrical cavities, each containing radio-frequency (RF) absorber held at different temperatures (300K and 77K), allowing a measurement of system noise temperature through the well-known 'Y-factor' method. The apparatus has been constructed at Yale, and over the course of the past year has undergone detailed verification measurements. To date, three preliminary noise temperature measurement sets have been conducted using the system, putting us on track to make the first noise temperature measurements of the HIRAX feed and perform the first analysis of feed repeatability., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

The Hydrogen Intensity and Real-time Analysis eXperiment (HIRAX) is a planned interferometric radio telescope array that will ultimately consist of 1024 close packed 6 m dishes that will be deployed at the SKA South Africa site. HIRAX will survey the majority of the southern sky to measure baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) using the 21 cm hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen. It will operate between 400-800 MHz with 391 kHz resolution, corresponding to a redshift range of $0.8 < z < 2.5$ and a minimum $\Delta z/z$ of ~0.003. One of the primary science goals of HIRAX is to constrain the dark energy equation of state by measuring the BAO scale as a function of redshift over a cosmologically significant range. Achieving this goal places stringent requirements on the mechanical and optical design of the HIRAX instrument which are described in this paper. This includes the simulations used to optimize the instrument, including the dish focal ratio, receiver support mechanism, and instrument cabling. As a result of these simulations, the dish focal ratio has been reduced to 0.23 to reduce inter-dish crosstalk, the feed support mechanism has been redesigned as a wide (35 cm diam.) central column, and the feed design has been modified to allow the cabling for the receiver to pass directly along the symmetry axis of the feed and dish in order to eliminate beam asymmetries and reduce sidelobe amplitudes. The beams from these full-instrument simulations are also used in an astrophysical m-mode analysis pipeline which is used to evaluate cosmological constraints and determine potential systematic contamination due to physical non-redundancies of the array elements. Observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are an incredibly fertile source of information for studying the origins and evolution of the Universe. Canadian digital research infrastructure (DRI) has played a key role in reducing ever-larger quantities of raw data into maps of the CMB suitable for scientific analysis, as exemplified by the many scientific results produced by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) over the past decade. The Simons Observatory (SO), due to start observing in 2023, will be able to measure the CMB with about an order of magnitude more sensitivity than ACT and other current telescopes. In this White Paper we outline how Canadian DRI under the New Digital Research Infrastructure Organization (NDRIO) could build upon the legacy of ACT and play a pivotal role in processing SO data, helping to produce data products that will be central to the cosmology community for years to come. We include estimates of DRI resources required for this work to indicate what kind of advanced research computing (ARC) would best support an SO-like project. Finally, we comment on how ARC allocations could be structured for large collaborations like SO and propose a research data management (RDM) system that makes public data releases available not only for download but also for direct analysis on Canadian DRI., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. We present a multi-wavelength investigation of the radio galaxy population in the galaxy cluster MOO J1506+5137 at $z$=1.09$\pm$0.03, which in previous work we identified as having multiple complex radio sources. The combined dataset used in this work includes data from the Low-Frequency Array Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT), the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS). We find that there are five radio sources which are all located within 500 kpc ($\sim$1$^{\prime}$) of the cluster center and have radio luminosities $P_{\mathrm{1.4GHz}}$ > 1.6$\times$10$^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$. The typical host galaxies are among the highest stellar mass galaxies in the cluster. The exceptional radio activity among the massive galaxy population appears to be linked to the dynamical state of the cluster. The galaxy distribution suggests an ongoing merger, with a subgroup found to the northwest of the main cluster. Further, two of the five sources are classified as bent-tail sources with one being a potential wide-angle tail (WAT)/hybrid morphology radio source (HyMoRS) indicating a dynamic environment. The cluster also lies in a region of the mass-richness plane occupied by other merging clusters in the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS). The data suggest that during the merger phase radio activity can be dramatically enhanced, which would contribute to the observed trend of increased radio activity in clusters with increasing redshift., Comment: 17 pages and 8 figures. The properties of galaxy clusters as a function of redshift can be utilized as an important cosmological tool. We present initial results from a program of follow-up observations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) in high redshift galaxy clusters detected at infrared wavelengths in the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS). Using typical on-source integration times of 3-4 hours per cluster, MUSTANG2 on the Green Bank Telescope was able to measure strong detections of SZE decrements and statistically significant masses on 14 out of 16 targets. On the remaining two, weaker (3.7 sigma) detections of the SZE signal and strong upper limits on the masses were obtained. In this paper we present masses and pressure profiles of each target and outline the data analysis used to recover these quantities. Of the clusters with strong detections, three show significantly flatter pressure profiles while, from the MUSTANG2 data, five others show signs of disruption at their cores. However, outside of the cores of the clusters, we were unable to detect significant amounts of asymmetry. We report the results of a pilot program for a Green Bank Telescope (GBT) MUSTANG Galactic Plane survey at 3 mm (90 GHz), MGPS90. The survey achieves a typical $1\sigma$ depth of $1-2$ mJy beam$^{-1}$ with a 9" beam. We describe the survey parameters, quality assessment process, cataloging, and comparison with other data sets. We have identified 709 sources over seven observed fields selecting some of the most prominent millimeter-bright regions between $0\deg < \ell < 50\deg$ (total area $\approx 7.5 \deg^2$). The majority of these sources have counterparts at other wavelengths. By applying flux selection criteria to these sources, we successfully recovered several known hypercompact HII (HCHII) regions, but did not confirm any new ones. We identify 126 sources that have mm-wavelength counterparts but do not have cm-wavelength counterparts and are therefore candidate HCHII regions; of these, 10 are morphologically compact and are strong candidates for new HCHII regions. Given the limited number of candidates in the extended area in this survey compared to the relatively large numbers seen in protoclusters W51 and W49, it appears that most HCHII regions exist within dense protoclusters. Comparing the counts of HCHII to ultracompact HII (UCHII) regions, we infer the HCHII region lifetime is 16-46% that of the UCHII region lifetime. We additionally separated the 3 mm emission into dust and free-free emission by comparing with archival 870 $\mu$m and 20 cm data. In the selected pilot fields, most ($\gtrsim80$%) of the 3 mm emission comes from plasma, either through free-free or synchrotron emission., Comment: Accepted to ApJS. One of the most important checks for systematic errors in CMB studies is the cross correlation of maps made by independent experiments. In this paper we report on the cross correlation between maps from the Atacama B-mode Search (ABS) and Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) experiments in both temperature and polarization. These completely different measurements have a clear correlation with each other and with the Planck satellite in both the EE and TE spectra at $\ell<400$ over the roughly $1100$ deg$^2$ common to all three. The TB, EB, and BB cross spectra are consistent with noise. Exploiting such cross-correlations will be important for future experiments operating in Chile that aim to probe the $30<\ell<8,000$ range., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. We present results from simultaneous modeling of high angular resolution GBT/MUSTANG-2 90 GHz Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) measurements and XMM-XXL X-ray images of three rich galaxy clusters selected from the HSC-SSP Survey. The combination of high angular resolution SZE and X-ray imaging enables a spatially resolved multi-component analysis, which is crucial to understand complex distributions of cluster gas properties. The targeted clusters have similar optical richnesses and redshifts, but exhibit different dynamical states in their member galaxy distributions: a single-peaked cluster, a double-peaked cluster, and a cluster belonging to a supercluster. A large-scale residual pattern in both regular Compton-parameter $y$ and X-ray surface brightness distributions is found in the single-peaked cluster, indicating a sloshing mode. The double-peaked cluster shows an X-ray remnant cool core between two SZE peaks associated with galaxy concentrations. The temperatures of the two peaks reach $\sim20-30$ keV in contrast to the cool core component of $\sim2$ keV, indicating a violent merger. The main SZE signal for the supercluster is elongated along a direction perpendicular to the major axis of the X-ray core, suggesting a minor merger before core passage. The $S_X$ and $y$ distributions are thus perturbed at some level, regardless of the optical properties. We find that the integrated Compton $y$ parameter and the temperature for the major merger are boosted from those expected by the weak-lensing mass and those for the other two clusters show no significant deviations, which is consistent with predictions of numerical simulations., Comment: 36 pages, 25 figures, 5 tables; accepted for the publication in MNRAS

SKA1 will make transformational advances in our understanding of the Universe across a wide range of fields, and Canadians are poised to play leadership roles in several. Canadian key SKA technologies will ensure a good return on capital investment in addition to strong scientific returns, positioning Canadian astronomy for future opportunities well beyond 2030. Canada has thriving communities in CMB (cosmic microwave background) studies, cosmology and submillimetre (submm) astronomy, with involvement in many facilities that featured prominently in previous Astronomy Long Range Plans. The standard cosmological model continues to be well fit using a small number of parameters. No one expects this model to be complete and so we need to continue to challenge it with data; moreover, it does not explain how galaxies and other structures form. So, how do we improve the precision of our understanding of structure formation within this model? Wavelengths from the microwave to the submm will be particularly fruitful for answering this question. That's because, in addition to the CMB anisotropies, there are other signals that can be extracted from large maps at these wavelengths - particularly the cosmic infrared and submm backgrounds, the thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects, and CMB lensing. Such signals carry a wealth of information about the cosmological model, as well as how dust, gas and star-formation evolve within dark-matter halos. Cross-correlations between these signals and those coming from the radio, optical and X-ray surveys, will provide even more information. Canadians are already members of teams for several related facilities and are working to be involved in others. In order for Canada to be fully engaged in exploiting the detailed information coming from these cosmological signatures, it is crucial that we find the resources to participate competitively in a combination of projects currently being planned. In the next few years, the 21cm line will enable direct observations of the Dark Ages, Cosmic Dawn, and Reionization, which represent previously unexplored periods in our cosmic history. With a combination of sky-averaged global signal measurements and spatial mapping surveys, the possible science return is enormous. This potentially includes (but is not limited to) constraints on first-generation galaxies (such as their typical masses and luminosities), constraints on cosmological parameters, a measurement of the Hubble parameter at z~15 to 20, the elimination of the optical depth nuisance parameter in the CMB, and searches for exotic phenomena such as baryon-dark matter couplings. To enable continued Canadian leadership in these science opportunities, we recommend 1) continued investments in 21cm experiments at all redshifts, 2) detailed analysis efforts of current data to overcome systematic effects, 3) new investments in preliminary experiments to explore the truly low-frequency sky as a stepping stone towards the Dark Ages, 4) new investments in line-intensity mapping experiments beyond the 21cm line, 5) continued theory support for 21cm cosmology, and 6) continued participation and knowledge transfer to next-generation international efforts such as the Square Kilometre Array., Comment: White paper submitted to Canadian 2020 Long Range Plan committee

Line-intensity mapping of the 21cm line is a powerful probe of large scale structure at z<6, tracing large-scale structure via neutral hydrogen content that is found within galaxies. In principle, it enables cost-efficient surveys of the matter distribution up to z~6, unlocking orders of magnitude more modes for observational cosmology. Canada has been a traditional leader in this field, having led the first detections of the cosmological 21cm signal via cross-correlations with optical galaxy surveys and having constructed the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME). The field is now entering a new era where data is abundant, allowing studies in how to overcome systematics to be tackled in an empirical, head-on fashion. In the next few years, this will produce the first detection of the 21cm auto power spectrum, which will pave the way towards a large suite of scientific possibilities. These potentially include precision measurements on the dark energy equation of state and other LCDM parameters, constraints on how HI mass traces dark matter, a detection of neutrino effects on large-scale structure, and the use of 21cm lensing to further constrain cosmology. To turn these promising directions into reality, we recommend a sustained program of investment in 21cm cosmology, starting with funding for the Canadian Hydrogen Observatory and Radio transient Detector (CHORD), followed by small-scale development efforts targeting next-generation hardware and sustained support for theory and technical staff support. Additionally, Canada should invest in complementary line-intensity mapping efforts (such as with CO or [CII] lines) and maintain participation in next-generation international efforts such as the Packed Ultra-wideband Mapping Array (PUMA) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA)., Comment: White paper submitted to Canadian 2020 Long Range Plan committee

The dispersion measure -- redshift relation of Fast Radio Bursts, $\mathrm{DM}(z)$, has been proposed as a potential new probe of the cosmos, complementary to existing techniques. In practice, however, the effectiveness of this approach depends on a number of factors, including (but not limited to) the intrinsic scatter in the data caused by intervening matter inhomogeneities. Here, we simulate a number of catalogues of mock FRB observations, and use MCMC techniques to forecast constraints, and assess which parameters will likely be best constrained. In all cases we find that any potential improvement in cosmological constraints are limited by the current uncertainty on the the diffuse gas fraction, $f_{\rm d}(z)$. Instead, we find that the precision of current cosmological constraints allows one to constrain $f_{\rm d}(z)$, and possibly its redshift evolution. Combining CMB + BAO + SNe + $H_0$ constraints with just 100 FRBs (with redshifts), we find a typical constraint on the mean diffuse gas fraction of a few percent. A detection of this nature would alleviate the "missing baryon problem", and therefore highlights the value of localisation and spectroscopic followup of future FRB detections., Comment: 11 pages; 3 figues

The galaxy cluster Zwicky 3146 is a sloshing cool core cluster at $z=0.291$ that in X-ray imaging does not appear to exhibit significant pressure substructure in the intracluster medium (ICM). The published $M_{500}$ values range between $3.88^{+0.62}_{-0.58}$ to $22.50 \pm 7.58 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, where ICM-based estimates with reported errors $<20$\% suggest that we should expect to find a mass between $6.53^{+0.44}_{-0.44} \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$ (from Planck, with an $8.4\sigma$ detection) and $8.52^{+1.77}_{-1.47} \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$ (from ACT, with a $14\sigma$ detection). This broad range of masses is suggestive that there is ample room for improvement for all methods. Here, we investigate the ability to estimate the mass of Zwicky 3146 via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect with data taken at 90 GHz by MUSTANG-2 to a noise level better than $15\ \mu$K at the center, and a cluster detection of $104\sigma$. We derive a pressure profile from our SZ data which is in excellent agreement with that derived from X-ray data. From our SZ-derived pressure profiles, we infer $M_{500}$ and $M_{2500}$ via three methods -- $Y$-$M$ scaling relations, the virial theorem, and hydrostatic equilibrium -- where we employ X-ray constraints from \emph{XMM-Newton} on the electron density profile when assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. Depending on the model and estimation method, our $M_{500}$ estimates range from $6.23 \pm 0.59$ to $10.6 \pm 0.95 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, where our estimate from hydrostatic equilibrium, is $8.29^{+1.93}_{-1.24}$ ($\pm 19.1$\% stat) ${}^{+0.74}_{-0.68}$ ($\pm 8.6$\% sys, calibration) $\times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form ('SO-Nominal') consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating ("Stage 3") experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz. Previous continuum observations from the MUSTANG camera on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) of the nearby star-forming filament OMC 2/3 found elevated emission at 3.3 mm relative to shorter wavelength data. As a consequence, the inferred dust emissivity index obtained from modified black body dust spectra was considerably lower than what is typically measured on $\sim 0.1 \, {\rm pc}$ scales in nearby molecular clouds. Here we present new observations of OMC 2/3 collected with the MUSTANG-2 camera on the GBT which confirm this elevated emission. We also present for the first time sensitive 1 cm observations made with the Ka-band receiver on the GBT which also show higher than expected emission. We use these observations--- along with Herschel, JCMT, Mambo, and GISMO data--- to assemble spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a variety of structures in OMC 2/3 spanning the range $160 \, {\rm \mu m}$ to $1 \, {\rm cm}$. The data at 2 mm and shorter are generally consistent with a modified black body spectrum and a single value of $\beta \sim 1.6$. The 3 mm and 1 cm data, however, lie well above such an SED. The spectrum of the long wavelength excess is inconsistent with both free-free emission and standard "Spinning Dust" models for Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME). The 3 mm and 1 cm data could be explained by a flatter dust emissivity at wavelengths shorter than 2 mm, potentially in concert with AME in some regions., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, ApJ (in press)

We present a catalog of 510 radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN, primarily blazars) and 287 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope at $>5\sigma$ significance in bands centered on 148 GHz (2 mm), 218 GHz (1.4 mm) and 277 GHz (1.1 mm), from a 480 square degrees strip on the celestial equator with additional (360 square degrees) shallower fields. Combining the deepest available 218 GHz wide-field imaging, 277 GHz data, and multi-band filtering yields the most sensitive wide-field millimeter-wave DSFG selection to date with rms noise referenced to 218 GHz reaching $<2$ mJy. We developed techniques to remove Galactic contamination from the extragalactic catalog, yielding 321 additional Galactic sources. We employ a new flux debiasing method that handles the heterogeneous sample selection due to Galactic cuts. We present spectral properties and source counts of the AGN and DSFGs. The DSFG spectra depart from an optically thin modified blackbody between 218 GHz and 277 GHz, consistent with optically thick emission or an additional cold dust component. For bright AGN, the inter-year RMS fractional deviation in flux density from source variability is $\sim40\%$. We report 8$-$2870 mJy source counts for AGN and 8$-$90 mJy source counts for DSFGs, the latter probing both the brighter, lensed population and the fainter, unlensed population. At 277 GHz we report the first source counts measurements at these flux densities, finding an excess above most model count predictions. Finally, we select thirty of the brightest DSFGs for multi-frequency study as candidate high-$z$ lensed systems., Comment: 42 pages. Accepted version. In addition to being a probe of Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization astrophysics, the 21cm line at $z>6$ is also a powerful way to constrain cosmology. Its power derives from several unique capabilities. First, the 21cm line is sensitive to energy injections into the intergalactic medium at high redshifts. It also increases the number of measurable modes compared to existing cosmological probes by orders of magnitude. Many of these modes are on smaller scales than are accessible via the CMB, and moreover have the advantage of being firmly in the linear regime (making them easy to model theoretically). Finally, the 21cm line provides access to redshifts prior to the formation of luminous objects. Together, these features of 21cm cosmology at $z>6$ provide multiple pathways toward precise cosmological constraints. These include the "marginalizing out" of astrophysical effects, the utilization of redshift space distortions, the breaking of CMB degeneracies, the identification of signatures of relative velocities between baryons and dark matter, and the discovery of unexpected signs of physics beyond the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm at high redshifts., Comment: Science white paper submitted to Decadal 2020 survey

The "cosmic dawn" refers to the period of the Universe's history when stars and black holes first formed and began heating and ionizing hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Though exceedingly difficult to detect directly, the first stars and black holes can be constrained indirectly through measurements of the cosmic 21-cm background, which traces the ionization state and temperature of intergalactic hydrogen gas. The Dark Ages are the period between the last scattering of the cosmic microwave background and the appearance of the first luminous sources, spanning approximately 1100 < z < 30. The only known way to measure fluctuations in this era is through the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen. Such observations have enormous potential for cosmology, because they span a large volume while the fluctuations remain linear even on small scales. Observations of 21-cm fluctuations during this era can therefore constrain fundamental aspects of our Universe, including inflation and any exotic physics of dark matter. The epoch of reionization, when photons from early galaxies ionized the intergalactic medium about a billion years after the Big Bang, is the last major phase transition in the Universe's history. Measuring the characteristics of the transition is important for understanding early galaxies and the cosmic web and for modeling dwarf galaxies in the later Universe. But such measurements require probes of the intergalactic medium itself. Here we describe how the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen provides a powerful probe of the reionization process and therefore important constraints on both the galaxies and intergalactic absorbers at that time. While existing experiments will make precise statistical measurements over the next decade, we argue that improved 21-cm analysis techniques - allowing imaging of the neutral gas itself - as well as improved theoretical models, are crucial for testing our understanding of this important era., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The early phases of galaxy formation constitute one of the most exciting frontiers in astrophysics. It is during this era that the first luminous sources reionize the intergalactic medium - the moment when structure formation affects every baryon in the Universe. Here we argue that we will obtain a complete picture of this era by combining observations of galaxies with direct measurements of the reionization process: the former will provide a detailed understanding of bright sources, while the latter will constrain the (substantial) faint source population. We further describe how optimizing the comparison of these two measurements requires near-infrared galaxy surveys covering large volumes and retaining redshift information and also improvements in 21-cm analysis, moving those experiments into the imaging regime., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Cosmic dawn and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) are among the least explored observational eras in cosmology: a time at which the first galaxies and supermassive black holes formed and reionized the cold, neutral Universe of the post-recombination era. With current instruments, only a handful of the brightest galaxies and quasars from that time are detectable as individual objects, due to their extreme distances. Fortunately, a multitude of multi-wavelength intensity mapping measurements, ranging from the redshifted 21 cm background in the radio to the unresolved X-ray background, contain a plethora of synergistic information about this elusive era. The coming decade will likely see direct detections of inhomogenous reionization with CMB and 21 cm observations, and a slew of other probes covering overlapping areas and complementary physical processes will provide crucial additional information and cross-validation. Modeling the submillimeter to centimeter emission of stars is challenging due to a lack of sensitive observations at these long wavelengths. We launched an ongoing campaign to obtain new observations entitled Measuring the Emission of Stellar Atmospheres at Submillimeter/millimeter wavelengths (MESAS). Here we present ALMA, GBT, and VLA observations of Sirius A, the closest main-sequence A-type star, that span from 1.4 to 9.0 millimeters. These observations complement our previous millimeter data on Sirius A and are entirely consistent with the PHOENIX stellar atmosphere models constructed to explain them. The small-scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) is dominated by anisotropies from the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect, and upcoming experiments will measure it very precisely, but the optical depth degeneracy limits the cosmological information that can be extracted. At the same time, fast radio bursts (FRBs) are an exciting new frontier for astrophysics, but their usefulness as cosmological probes is currently unclear. We show that FRBs are uniquely suited for breaking the kSZ optical depth degeneracy. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a new cosmic microwave background experiment being built on Cerro Toco in Chile, due to begin observations in the early 2020s. We describe the scientific goals of the experiment, motivate the design, and forecast its performance. SO will measure the temperature and polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background in six frequency bands: 27, 39, 93, 145, 225 and 280 GHz. The initial configuration of SO will have three small-aperture 0.5-m telescopes (SATs) and one large-aperture 6-m telescope (LAT), with a total of 60,000 cryogenic bolometers. Our key science goals are to characterize the primordial perturbations, measure the number of relativistic species and the mass of neutrinos, test for deviations from a cosmological constant, improve our understanding of galaxy evolution, and constrain the duration of reionization. The SATs will target the largest angular scales observable from Chile, mapping ~10% of the sky to a white noise level of 2 $\mu$K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, to measure the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, at a target level of $\sigma(r)=0.003$. The LAT will map ~40% of the sky at arcminute angular resolution to an expected white noise level of 6 $\mu$K-arcmin in combined 93 and 145 GHz bands, overlapping with the majority of the LSST sky region and partially with DESI. With up to an order of magnitude lower polarization noise than maps from the Planck satellite, the high-resolution sky maps will constrain cosmological parameters derived from the damping tail, gravitational lensing of the microwave background, the primordial bispectrum, and the thermal and kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, and will aid in delensing the large-angle polarization signal to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope 610 MHz observations of 14 Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) clusters, including new data for nine. The sample includes 73\% of ACT equatorial clusters with $M_{500} > 5 \times 10^{14}\;M_\odot$. We detect diffuse emission in three of these (27$^{+20}_{-14}$\%): we detect a radio mini-halo in ACT-CL J0022.2$-$0036 at $z=0.8$, making it the highest-redshift mini-halo known; we detect potential radio relic emission in ACT-CL J0014.9$-$0057 ($z=0.533$); and we confirm the presence of a radio halo in low-mass cluster ACT-CL J0256.5+0006, with flux density $S_{610} = 6.3\;\pm\;0.4$ mJy. We also detect residual diffuse emission in ACT-CL J0045.9$-$0152 ($z=0.545$), which we cannot conclusively classify. For systems lacking diffuse radio emission, we determine radio halo upper limits in two ways and find via survival analysis that these limits do not significantly affect radio power scaling relations. Several clusters with no diffuse emission detection are known or suspected mergers, based on archival X-ray and/or optical measures; given the limited sensitivity of our observations, deeper observations of these disturbed systems are required in order to rule out the presence of diffuse emission consistent with known scaling relations. In parallel with our diffuse emission results, we present catalogs of individual radio sources, including a few interesting extended sources. The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS) is an all-sky full-polarisation survey at a frequency of 5 GHz, designed to provide complementary data to the all-sky surveys of WMAP and Planck, and future CMB B-mode polarization imaging surveys. The observing frequency has been chosen to provide a signal that is dominated by Galactic synchrotron emission, but suffers little from Faraday rotation, so that the measured polarization directions provide a good template for higher frequency observations, and carry direct information about the Galactic magnetic field. Telescopes in both northern and southern hemispheres with matched optical performance are used to provide all-sky coverage from a ground-based experiment. A continuous-comparison radiometer and a correlation polarimeter on each telescope provide stable imaging properties such that all angular scales from the instrument resolution of 45 arcmin up to full sky are accurately measured. The northern instrument has completed its survey and the southern instrument has started observing. We expect that C-BASS data will significantly improve the component separation analysis of Planck and other CMB data, and will provide important constraints on the properties of anomalous Galactic dust and the Galactic magnetic field., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

We present weak-lensing measurements using the first-year data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Strategic Survey Program on the Subaru telescope for eight galaxy clusters selected through their thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signal measured at 148 GHz with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter experiment. The overlap between the two surveys in this work is 33.8 square degrees, before masking bright stars. The signal-to-noise ratio of individual cluster lensing measurements ranges from 2.2 to 8.7, with a total of 11.1 for the stacked cluster weak-lensing signal. We fit for an average weak-lensing mass distribution using three different profiles, a Navarro-Frenk-White profile, a dark-matter-only emulated profile, and a full cosmological hydrodynamic emulated profile. We interpret the differences among the masses inferred by these models as a systematic error of 10\%, which is currently smaller than the statistical error. We obtain the ratio of the SZ-estimated mass to the lensing-estimated mass (the so-called hydrostatic mass bias $1-b$) of $0.74^{+0.13}_{-0.12}$, which is comparable to previous SZ-selected clusters from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and from the {\sl Planck} Satellite. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of 48 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) detected in the LABOCA/ACT Survey of Clusters at All Redshifts, LASCAR, which acquired new 870 $\mu$m and ATCA 2.1 GHz observations of ten galaxy clusters detected through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) signal by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. Far-infrared observations were also conducted with the PACS (100/160 $\mu$m) and SPIRE (250/350/500 $\mu$m) instruments on $Herschel$ for sample subsets of five and six clusters. LASCAR 870 $\mu$m, maps were reduced using a multi-scale iterative pipeline that removes the SZE increment signal, yielding point-source sensitivities of $\sigma\sim2\rm{\,mJy\,beam}^{-1}$. We detect in total 49 sources at the $4\sigma$ level, and conduct a detailed multi-wavelength analysis considering our new radio and far-IR observations plus existing near-IR and optical data. One source is identified as a foreground galaxy, 28 SMGs are matched to single radio sources, 4 have double radio counterparts, and 16 are undetected at 2.1 GHz but tentatively associated in some cases to near-IR/optical sources. We estimate photometric redshifts for 34 sources with secure (25) and tentative (9) matches at different wavelengths, obtaining a median $z=2.8^{+2.1}_{-1.7}$. Compared to previous results for single-dish surveys, our redshift distribution has a comparatively larger fraction of sources at $z>3$ and the high-redshift tail is more extended. This is consistent with millimeter spectroscopic confirmation of a growing number of high-$z$ SMGs and relevant for testing of cosmological models. Analytical lens modeling is applied to estimate magnification factors for 42 SMGs at cluster-centric radii $>1.2$'; with the demagnified flux densities and source-plane areas, we obtain integral number counts that agree with previous submillimeter surveys., Comment: 44 pages, 18 figures

The Atacama B-mode Search (ABS) is an experiment designed to measure cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization at large angular scales ($\ell>40$). It operated from the ACT site at 5190~m elevation in northern Chile at 145 GHz with a net sensitivity (NEQ) of 41 $\mu$K$\sqrt{\rm s}$. It employed an ambient-temperature sapphire half-wave plate rotating at 2.55 Hz to modulate the incident polarization signal and reduce systematic effects. We report here on the analysis of data from a 2400 deg$^2$ patch of sky centered at declination $-42^\circ$ and right ascension $25^\circ$. We perform a blind analysis. After unblinding, we find agreement with the Planck TE and EE measurements on the same region of sky. We marginally detect polarized dust emission and give an upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio of $r<2.3$ (95% cl) with the equivalent of 100 on-sky days of observation. We discuss the ground-breaking science that will be possible with a wide area survey, using the MeerKAT telescope, known as MeerKLASS (MeerKAT Large Area Synoptic Survey). The current specifications of MeerKAT make it a great fit for science applications that require large survey speeds but not necessarily high angular resolutions. In particular, for cosmology, a large survey over $\sim 4,000 \, {\rm deg}^2$ for $\sim 4,000$ hours will potentially provide the first ever measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillations using the 21cm intensity mapping technique, with enough accuracy to impose constraints on the nature of dark energy. The combination with multi-wavelength data will give unique additional information, such as exquisite constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity using the multi-tracer technique, as well as a better handle on foregrounds and systematics. Such a wide survey with MeerKAT is also a great match for HI galaxy studies, providing unrivalled statistics in the pre-SKA era for galaxies resolved in the HI emission line beyond local structures at z > 0.01. It will also produce a large continuum galaxy sample down to a depth of about 5\,$\mu$Jy in L-band, which is quite unique over such large areas and will allow studies of the large-scale structure of the Universe out to high redshifts, complementing the galaxy HI survey to form a transformational multi-wavelength approach to study galaxy dynamics and evolution. Finally, the same survey will supply unique information for a range of other science applications, including a large statistical investigation of galaxy clusters as well as produce a rotation measure map across a huge swathe of the sky. The MeerKAT telescope will be one of the most sensitive radio arrays in the pre-SKA era. Here we discuss a low-frequency SZ-selected cluster survey with MeerKAT, the MeerKAT Extended Relics, Giant Halos, and Extragalactic Radio Sources (MERGHERS) survey. The primary goal of this survey is to detect faint signatures of diffuse cluster emission, specifically radio halos and relics. SZ-selected cluster samples offer a homogeneous, mass-limited set of targets out to higher redshift than X-ray samples. MeerKAT is sensitive enough to detect diffuse radio emission at the faint levels expected in low-mass and high-redshift clusters, thereby enabling radio halo and relic formation theories to be tested with a larger statistical sample over a significantly expanded phase space. Infrared-Faint Radio Sources (IFRSs) are an unusual class of objects that are relatively bright at radio wavelengths but have faint or undetected infrared counterparts even in deep surveys. We identify and investigate the nature of IFRSs using deep radio (S$_{\rm 1.4~GHz}$ $\sim$ 100 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ at 5$\sigma$), optical (m$_{\rm r}$ $\sim$ 26 - 27.7 at 5$\sigma$), and near-IR (S$_{\rm 3.6~{\mu}m}$ $\sim$ 1.3 - 2.0 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ at 5$\sigma$) data available in two deep fields namely the Subaru X-ray Deep Field (SXDF) and the Very Large Array - VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VLA-VVDS) field. In 1.8 deg$^{2}$ of the two fields we identify a total of nine confirmed and ten candidate IFRSs. We find that our IFRSs are high-redshift radio-loud AGN, with 12/19 sources having redshift estimates in the range of $z$ $\sim$ 1.7 - 4.3, while a limit of $z$ $\geq$ 2.0 is placed for the remaining seven sources. Notably, our study finds, for the first time, IFRSs with measured redshift $>$ 3.0, and also, the redshift estimates for IFRSs in the faintest 3.6 $\mu$m flux regime i.e., S$_{\rm 3.6~{\mu}m}$ $<$ 1.3 ${\mu}$Jy. Radio observations show that our IFRSs exhibit both compact unresolved as well as extended double-lobe morphologies, and have predominantly steep radio spectra between 1.4 GHz and 325 MHz. The non-detection of all but one IFRSs in the X-ray band and the optical-to-MIR colour (m$_{\rm r}$ - m$_{\rm 24~{\mu}m}$) suggest that a significant fraction of IFRSs are likely to be hosted in dusty obscured galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS
