Multimodal/vision language models (VLMs) are increasingly being deployed in healthcare settings worldwide, necessitating robust benchmarks to ensure their safety, efficacy, and fairness. Multiple-choice question and answer (QA) datasets derived from national medical examinations have long served as valuable evaluation tools, but existing datasets are largely text-only and available in a limited subset of languages and countries. To address these challenges, we present WorldMedQA-V, an updated multilingual, multimodal benchmarking dataset designed to evaluate VLMs in healthcare. WorldMedQA-V includes 568 labeled multiple-choice QAs paired with 568 medical images from four countries (Brazil, Israel, Japan, and Spain), covering original languages and validated English translations by native clinicians, respectively. Baseline performance for common open- and closed-source models are provided in the local language and English translations, and with and without images provided to the model. The reduction of magnetic forces on electromagnetic coils is an important consideration in the design of high-field devices such as the stellarator or tokamak. Unfortunately, these forces may be too time-consuming to evaluate by conventional finite element modeling within an optimization loop. Although mutual forces can be computed rapidly by approximating large-bore coils as infinitely thin, this approximation does not hold for self-forces as it leads to an unphysical divergence. Recently, a novel reduced model for the self-field, self-force, and self-inductance of electromagnetic coils based on filamentary models was rigorously derived and demonstrated to be highly accurate and numerically efficient to evaluate. In this paper, we present an implementation of the reduced self-force model employing automatic differentiation within the SIMSOPT stellarator design software and use it in derivative-based coil optimization for a quasi-axisymmetric stellarator. We show that it is possible to significantly reduce point-wise forces throughout the coils, though this comes with trade-offs to fast particle losses and the minimum distance between coils and the plasma surface. The trade-off between magnetic forces and coil-surface distance is mediated by the minimum coil-coil distance for coils near the inboard side of the "bean" cross-section of the plasma. The relationship between forces and fast particle losses is mediated by the normal field error. Coil forces can be lowered to a threshold with minimal deterioration to losses. Importantly, the magnet optimization approach here can be used also for tokamaks, other fusion concepts, and applications outside of fusion.

The ever-increasing use of artificial intelligence in autonomous systems has significantly contributed to advance the research on multi-object tracking, adopted in several real-time applications (e.g., autonomous driving, surveillance drones, robotics) to localize and follow the trajectory of multiple objects moving in front of a camera. Current tracking algorithms can be divided into two main categories: some approaches introduce complex heuristics and re-identification models to improve the tracking accuracy and reduce the number of identification switches, without particular attention to the timing performance, whereas other approaches are aimed at reducing response times by removing the re-identification phase, thus penalizing the tracking accuracy. This work proposes a new approach to multi-class object tracking that allows achieving smaller and more predictable execution times, without penalizing the tracking performance. The idea is to reduce the problem of matching predictions with detections into smaller sub-problems by splitting the Hungarian matrix by class and invoking the second re-identification stage only when strictly necessary for a smaller number of elements. The proposed solution was evaluated in complex urban scenarios with several objects of different types (as cars, trucks, bikes, and pedestrians), showing the effectiveness of the multi-class approach with respect to state of the art trackers.

We show that the graph of normalized elliptic Dedekind sums is dense in its image for arbitrary imaginary quadratic fields, generalizing a result of Ito in the Euclidean case. The capability of the global, electromagnetic gyrokinetic GENE code interfaced with the transport Tango solver is exploited to address the impact of fusion alpha particles (in their dual role of fast particles and heating source) on plasma profiles and performance at JET in the discharges with the highest quasi-stationary peak fusion power during the DTE2 experimental campaigns. Employing radially global nonlinear electromagnetic GENE-Tango simulations, we compare results with/without alpha particles and alpha heating. Our findings reveal that alpha particles have a negligible impact on turbulent transport, with GENE-Tango converging to similar plasma profiles regardless of their inclusion as a kinetic species in GENE. On the other hand, alpha heating is found to contribute to the peaking of the electron temperature profiles, leading to a 1keV drop on the on-axis electron temperature when alpha heating is neglected in Tango. The minimal impact of alpha particles on turbulent transport in this JET discharge - despite this being the shot with the highest fusion output - is attributed to the low content of fusion alpha in this discharge. To assess the potential impact of alpha particles on turbulent transport in regimes with higher alpha particle density, as expected in ITER and fusion reactors, we artificially increased the alpha particle concentration to levels expected for ITER. By performing global nonlinear GENE standalone simulations, we found that increasing the alpha particle density beyond five times the nominal value lead to significant overall turbulence destabilization.

In recent years, machine learning approaches have made dramatic advances, reaching superhuman performance in Go, Atari, and poker variants. These games, and others before them, have served not only as a testbed but have also helped to push the boundaries of AI research. Continuing this tradition, we examine the tabletop game Dominion and discuss the properties that make it well-suited to serve as a benchmark for the next generation of reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms. We also present the Dominion Online Dataset, a collection of over 2,000,000 games of Dominion played by experienced players on the Dominion Online webserver. Finally, we introduce an RL baseline bot that uses existing techniques to beat common heuristic-based bots, and shows competitive performance against the previously strongest bot, Provincial.

This chapter provides an extended overview about Reduced Order Models (ROMs), with a focus on their features in terms of efficiency and accuracy. In particular, the aim is to browse the more common ROM frameworks, considering both intrusive and data-driven approaches. We present the validation of such techniques against several test cases. The first one is an academic benchmark, the thermal block problem, where a Poisson equation is considered. Here a classic intrusive ROM framework based on a Galerkin projection scheme is employed. The second and third test cases come from real-world applications, the one related to the investigation of the blood flow patterns in a patient specific coronary arteries configuration where the Navier Stokes equations are addressed and the other one concerning the granulation process within pharmaceutical industry where a fluid-particle system is considered. Here we employ two data-driven ROM approaches showing a very relevant trade-off between accuracy and efficiency. In the last part of the contribution, two novel technological platforms, ARGOS and ATLAS, are presented. They are designed to provide a user-friendly access to data-driven models for real-time predictions for complex biomedical and industrial problems.

We present a comparative computational study of two stabilized Reduced Order Models (ROMs) for the simulation of convection-dominated incompressible flow (Reynolds number of the order of a few thousands). Representative solutions in the parameter space, which includes either time only or time and Reynolds number, are computed with a Finite Volume method and used to generate a reduced basis via Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). Galerkin projection of the Navier-Stokes equations onto the reduced space is used to compute the ROM solution. To ensure computational efficiency, the number of POD modes is truncated and ROM solution accuracy is recovered through two stabilization methods: i) adding a global constant artificial viscosity to the reduced dimensional model, and ii) adding a different value of artificial viscosity for the different POD modes. We test the stabilized ROMs for fluid flow in an idealized medical device consisting of a conical convergent, a narrow throat, and a sudden expansion. Both stabilization methods significantly improve the ROM solution accuracy over a standard (non-stabilized) POD-Galerkin model.

Toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmodes (TAEs) can transport fusion-born energetic particles out of the plasma volume, thereby decreasing plasma self-heating efficiency and possibly damaging reactor walls. Therefore, understanding TAE destabilisation and identifying saturation mechanisms is crucial to achieving burning plasma. While TAEs have been studies extensively in the past using kinetic-MHD codes, here a fully gyrokinetic study is employed which allows for additional physics. In the case studied, the primary drive mechanism is identified as the resonance between the magnetic drifts and the TAE, and this is seen to be disrupted by equilibrium flow shear which can stabilize the mode by rotating it in the the poloidal plane. It is found that zonal flows do not play a significant role in the saturation of these TAEs, and there are no saturation mechanisms present in the local gyrokinetic picture that are able to saturate the mode at physically relevant transport levels in the case of TAE-only turbulence. Instead, we confirm that the global profile flattening of fast-ion density is the key saturation mechanism. The nonlinear excitation of TAE travelling along the electron diamagnetic direction and its beating with the ion diamagnetic TAE, resulting in large amplitude oscillations that may help detect TAEs more easily in tokamaks, is also reported.

We exploit the complete complementarity relations (CCR) to fully characterize various aspects of quantumness in QED scattering processes at tree level. As a paradigmatic example, we consider Bhabha scattering in two different configurations: in the first case, the initial state is factorized in the spin and we study the generation of entanglement due to the scattering. Then we consider the most general case in which the initial state can be entangled: we find that the scattering generates and distributes quantum information in a non-trivial way among the spin degrees of freedom of the particles, with CCR relations being preserved. An important outcome of our analysis is that maximal entanglement is conserved in the scattering process involving only fermions as input and output states, with a more complex situation if photons are present., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

We present a P-wave scattering image of the volcanic structures under Tenerife Island using the autocorrelation functions of P-wave vertical velocity fluctuations. We have applied cluster analysis to total quality factor attenuation (Q inv t) and scattering quality factor attenuation (Q inv PSc) images to interpret the structures in terms of intrinsic and scattering attenuation variations on a 2D plane, corresponding to a depth of 2000 m, and check the robustness of the scattering imaging. The results show that scattering patterns are similar to total attenuation patterns in the South of the island. There are two main areas where patterns differ: at Ca\~nadas-Teide-Pico Viejo Complex high total attenuation and average-to-low scattering values are observed. We interpret the difference as induced by intrinsic attenuation. In the Santiago Ridge Zone (SRZ) region, high scattering values correspond to average total attenuation. In our interpretation, the anomaly is induced by an extended scatterer, geometrically related to the surficial traces of Garachico and El Chinyero historical eruptions and the area of highest seismic activity during the 2004-2008 seismic crises., Comment: Final reviewed version of the published paper

CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) is the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very-high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to $\simeq 20$ GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in November 2019, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data since then. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the basic performance parameters of the telescope. The data sample consists of around 36 hours of observations at low zenith angles collected between November 2020 and March 2022. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period - only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is estimated to be around 20 GeV, rising to $\simeq 30$ GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.12 to 0.40 degrees, and energy resolution from 15 to 50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50-h observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03 - 30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. We investigate the confinement properties of two recently devised quasi-helically symmetric stellarator configurations, HSK and QSTK. Both have been optimized for large critical gradients of the ion temperature gradient mode, which is an important driver of turbulent transport in magnetic confinement fusion devices. To predict the resulting core plasma profiles, we utilize an advanced theoretical framework based on the gyrokinetic codes GENE and GENE-3D, coupled to the transport code TANGO. Compared to the HSX stellarator, both HSK and QSTK achieve significantly higher core-to-edge temperature ratios, partly thanks to their smaller aspect ratios, with the other part due to more detailed shaping of the magnetic geometry achieved during optimization. The computed confinement time, however, is less sensitive to core temperature than edge temperature, simply due to the disproportionate influence the edge has on stored plasma energy. We therefore emphasize the possible benefits of further optimizing turbulence in the outer core region, and the need to include accurate modelling of confinement in the edge region in order to assess overall plasma performance of turbulence optimized stellarators.

For designing high-field electromagnets, the Lorentz force on coils must be computed to ensure a support structure is feasible, and the inductance should be computed to evaluate the stored energy. Also, the magnetic field and its variation inside the conductor is of interest for computing stress and strain, and due to superconducting quench limits. For these force, inductance, energy, and internal field calculations, the coils cannot be naively approximated as infinitesimally thin filaments due to divergences when the source and evaluation points coincide, so more computationally demanding calculations are usually required, resolving the finite cross-section of the conductors. Here, we present a new alternative method that enables the internal magnetic field vector, self-force, and self-inductance to be computed rapidly and accurately within a 1D filament model. The method is applicable to coils for which the curve center-line can have general noncircular shape, as long as the conductor width is small compared to the radius of curvature. This paper extends a previous calculation for circular-cross-section conductors [Hurwitz et al, arXiv:2310.09313 (2023)] to consider the case of rectangular cross-section. The reduced model is derived by rigorous analysis of the singularity, regularizing the filament integrals such that they match the true high-dimensional integrals at high coil aspect ratio. The new filament model exactly recovers analytic results for a circular coil, and is shown to accurately reproduce full finite-cross-section calculations for a non-planar coil of a stellarator magnetic fusion device. Due to the efficiency of the model here, it is well suited for use inside design optimization.

The design of electromagnetic coils may require evaluation of several quantities that are challenging to compute numerically. These quantities include Lorentz forces, which may be a limiting factor due to stresses; the internal magnetic field, which is relevant for determining stress as well as a superconducting coil's proximity to its quench limit; and the inductance, which determines stored magnetic energy and dynamics. When computing the effect on one coil due to the current in another, these quantities can often be approximated quickly by treating the coils as infinitesimally thin. When computing the effect on a coil due to its own current (e.g., self-force or self-inductance), evaluation is difficult due to the presence of a singularity; coils cannot be treated as infinitesimally thin as each quantity diverges at zero conductor width. Here, we present novel and well-behaved methods for evaluating these quantities using non-singular integral formulae of reduced dimensions. These formulae are determined rigorously by dividing the domain of integration of the magnetic vector potential into two regions, exploiting appropriate approximations in each region, and expanding in high aspect ratio. Our formulae show good agreement to full finite-thickness calculations even at low aspect ratio, both analytically for a torus and numerically for a non-planar coil of a stellarator fusion device, the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX). Because the integrands of these formulae develop fine structure as the minor radius becomes infinitely thin, we also develop a method of evaluating the self-force and self-inductance with even greater efficiency by integrating this sharp feature analytically. We demonstrate with this method that the self-force can be accurately computed for the HSX coil with as few as 12 grid points.

A data-driven Reduced Order Model (ROM) based on a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition - Radial Basis Function (POD-RBF) approach is adopted in this paper for the analysis of blood flow dynamics in a patient-specific case of Atrial Fibrillation (AF). The Full Order Model (FOM) is represented by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, discretized with a Finite Volume (FV) approach. Both the Newtonian and the Casson's constitutive laws are employed. The aim is to build a computational tool able to efficiently and accurately reconstruct the patterns of relevant hemodynamics indices related to the stasis of the blood in a physical parametrization framework including the cardiac output in the Newtonian case and also the plasma viscosity and the hematocrit in the non-Newtonian one. Many FOM-ROM comparisons are shown to analyze the performance of our approach as regards errors and computational speed-up., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures

To better understand the interaction of global tearing modes and microturbulence in the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) reversed-field pinch (RFP), the global gyrokinetic code \textsc{Gene} is modified to describe global tearing mode instability via a shifted Maxwellian distribution consistent with experimental equilibria. The implementation of the shifted Maxwellian is tested and benchmarked by comparisons with different codes and models. Good agreement is obtained in code-code and code-theory comparisons. Linear stability of tearing modes of a non-reversed MST discharge is studied. A collisionality scan is performed to the lowest order unstable modes ($n=5$, $n=6$) and shown to behave consistently with theoretical scaling. The nonlinear evolution is simulated, and saturation is found to arise from mode coupling and transfer of energy from the most unstable tearing mode to small-scale stable modes mediated by the $m=2$ tearing mode. The work described herein lays the foundation for nonlinear simulation and analysis of the interaction of tearing modes and gyroradius-scale instabilities in RFP plasmas.

Gyrokinetic simulations conducted by Mazzi et al. reveal the suppression of turbulence in fusion plasmas through the destabilization of Toroidal Alfv\'en Eigenmodes (TAEs) by megaelectronvolt ions. Our analysis demonstrates that the authors' numerical findings are strongly influenced by the selected simulation settings, calling into question their claim that the resulting heat conductivity aligns with the TRANSP power balance. Specifically, we assert that the numerical results presented by Mazzi et al. are a direct consequence of the inadequacy of resolution employed in their numerical simulations. Notably, there are three primary factors contributing to this issue: (i) the employed radial box size is insufficient, leading to an undesirable impact of the boundary conditions on the simulations; (ii) the adoption of a higher minimum toroidal mode number fails to accurately resolve the entire range of TAEs, resulting in an underestimation of TAE drive and introducing spurious effects on wave-particle resonances; (iii) an insufficient resolution in the magnetic moment direction exacerbates these challenges. Upon addressing the aforementioned numerical issues, a significant increase in heat conductivity for each plasma species was observed by more than tenfold, diverging from the expected values derived from the TRANSP power balance calculations. Consequently, our results raise serious doubts on the authors' assertion of enhanced performance in the presence of strongly unstable TAEs, emphasizing the need for a reevaluation of their claims.
