Search

The production of complex astronomical data is accelerating, especially with newer telescopes producing ever more large-scale surveys. The increased quantity, complexity, and variety of astronomical data demand a parallel increase in skill and sophistication in developing, deciding, and deploying statistical methods. Understanding limitations and appreciating nuances in statistical and machine learning methods and the reasoning behind them is essential for improving data-analytic proficiency and acumen. Aiming to facilitate such improvement in astronomy, we delineate cautionary tales in statistics via six maxims, with examples drawn from the astronomical literature. Inspired by the significant quality improvement in business and manufacturing processes by the routine adoption of Six Sigma, we hope the routine reflection on these Six Maxims will improve the quality of both data analysis and scientific findings in astronomy.

This paper addresses, for the first time, a key aspect of the phenomenology of Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) -- the characteristics of their radio spectra. We present a radio-spectrum description of a complete sample of high luminosity CSOs (CSO-2s), which shows that they exhibit the \textit{complete} range of spectral types, including flat-spectrum sources ($\alpha \ge -0.5$), steep-spectrum sources ($\alpha < -0.5$), and peaked-spectrum sources. We show that there is no clear correlation between spectral type and size, but there is a correlation between the high-frequency spectral index and both object type and size. We also show that, to avoid biasing the data and to understand the various classes of jetted-AGN involved, the complete range of spectral types should be included in studying the general phenomenology of compact jetted-AGN, and that complete samples must be used, selected over a wide range of frequencies. We discuss examples that demonstrate these points. We find that the high-frequency spectral indices of CSO-2s span $-1.3 <\alpha_{\rm hi} < -0.3$, and hence that radio spectral signatures cannot be used to discriminate definitively between CSO-2s, binary galactic nuclei, and millilensed objects, unless they have $\alpha_{\rm hi} >-0.3$.

Combining Chandra, ALMA, EVLA, and Hubble Space Telescope archival data and newly acquired APO/DIS spectroscopy, we detect a double-lobed 17~kpc X-ray emission with plumes oriented approximately perpendicular and parallel to the galactic plane of the massive lenticular galaxy NGC\,5084 at 0.3--2.0~keV. We detect a highly inclined ($i=71.2^{+1.8\circ}_{-1.7}$), molecular circumnuclear disk ($D=304^{+10}_{-11}$ pc) in the core of the galaxy rotating (V$^{\rm (2-1) CO}_{\rm rot}=242.7^{+9.6}_{-6.4}$ km s$^{-1}$) in a direction perpendicular to that of the galactic disk, implying a total mass of $\log_{10}\left( \frac{M_{\rm BH}}{M_{\odot}} \right) = 7.66^{+0.21}_{-0.15}$ for NGC\,5084's supermassive black hole. Archival EVLA radio observations at 6 cm and 20 cm reveal two symmetric radio lobes aligned with the galactic plane, extending to a distance of $\overline{R}=4.6\pm0.6$ kpc from the core, oriented with the polar axis of the circumnuclear disk. The spectral energy distribution lacks strong emission lines in the optical range. Three formation scenarios are considered to explain these multi-wavelength archival observations: 1) AGN re-orientation caused by accretion of surrounding material, 2) AGN-driven hot gas outflow directed along the galactic minor axis, or 3) a starburst / supernovae driven outflow at the core of the galaxy. The Chandra Source Catalog (CSC) is a virtual X-ray astrophysics facility that enables both detailed individual source studies and statistical studies of large samples of X-ray sources detected in ACIS and HRC-I imaging observations obtained by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The catalog provides carefully-curated, high-quality, and uniformly calibrated and analyzed tabulated positional, spatial, photometric, spectral, and temporal source properties, as well as science-ready X-ray data products. The latter includes multiple types of source- and field-based FITS format products that can be used as a basis for further research, significantly simplifying followup analysis of scientifically meaningful source samples. We discuss in detail the algorithms used for the CSC Release 2 Series, including CSC 2.0, which includes 317,167 unique X-ray sources on the sky identified in observations released publicly through the end of 2014, and CSC 2.1, which adds Chandra data released through the end of 2021 and expands the catalog to 407,806 sources. Besides adding more recent observations, the CSC Release 2 Series includes multiple algorithmic enhancements that provide significant improvements over earlier releases. The compact source sensitivity limit for most observations is ~5 photons over most of the field of view, which is ~2x fainter than Release 1, achieved by co-adding observations and using an optimized source detection approach. A Bayesian X-ray aperture photometry code produces robust fluxes even in crowded fields and for low count sources. We present a new method to distinguish between different states (e.g., high and low, quiescent and flaring) in astronomical sources with count data. The method models the underlying physical process as latent variables following a continuous-space Markov chain that determines the expected Poisson counts in observed light curves in multiple passbands. For the underlying state process, we consider several autoregressive processes, yielding continuous-space hidden Markov models of varying complexity. Under these models, we can infer the state that the object is in at any given time. The continuous state predictions from these models are then dichotomized with the help of a finite mixture model to produce state classifications. We apply these techniques to X-ray data from the active dMe flare star EV Lac, splitting the data into quiescent and flaring states. We find that a first-order vector autoregressive process efficiently separates flaring from quiescence: flaring occurs over 30-40% of the observation durations, a well-defined persistent quiescent state can be identified, and the flaring state is characterized by higher plasma temperatures and emission measures., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, 12 tables

We report on new multi-frequency Very Large Array (VLA) radio observations and Chandra X-ray observations of a radio-loud quasar with a ~300 kpc long jet, PKS 1127-145, during a flaring event detected in $\gamma$-rays by the Fermi Large Area Telescope in 2020 December. The high angular resolution of the new radio images allows us to disentangle for the first time the inner kpc-scale jet from the core contribution. The inner radio jet, up to 15 kpc from the core, is highly polarized (33 per cent) and the magnetic field is parallel to the jet axis. At about 18 arcsec from the core the jet slightly bends and we observe a re-brightening of the radio emission and a 90-degree rotation of the magnetic field, likely highlighting the presence of a shock that is compressing the magnetic field to a plane perpendicular to the jet axis and where efficient particle acceleration takes place. At the same position the X-ray emission fades, suggesting a deceleration of the bulk velocity of the jet after the bend. A change in velocity and collimation of the jet is supported by the widening of the jet profile and the detection of a limb-brightened structure connecting the bending region with the jet termination. The limb-brightened structure might indicate the co-existence of both longitudinal and transverse velocity gradients at the jet bending. There is no evidence for significant brightening of the kpc-scale jet in the radio or X-ray band during the $\gamma$-ray flare. The X-ray flux, $F_{\rm 2-10\,keV} = (6.24\pm0.57)\times10^{-12}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, measured by Chandra from the quasar core is consistent with the flux measured by the X-Ray Telescope on board the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory after the high-energy flare. We present SAUNAS (Selective Amplification of Ultra Noisy Astronomical Signal), a pipeline designed for detecting diffuse X-ray emission in the data obtained with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) of the Chandra X-ray Observatory. SAUNAS queries the available observations in the Chandra archive, performs photometric calibration, PSF (point spread function) modeling, and deconvolution, point-source removal, adaptive smoothing, and background correction. This pipeline builds on existing and well-tested software including CIAO, VorBin, and LIRA. We characterize the performance of SAUNAS through several quality performance tests, and demonstrate the broad applications and capabilities of SAUNAS using two galaxies already known to show X-ray emitting structures. SAUNAS successfully detects the 30 kpc X-ray super-wind of NGC 3079 using Chandra/ACIS datasets, matching the spatial distribution detected with more sensitive XMM-Newton observations. The analysis performed by SAUNAS reveals an extended low surface brightness source in the field of UGC 5101 in the 0.3-1.0 keV and 1.0-2.0 keV bands. This source is potentially a background galaxy cluster or a hot gas plume associated with UGC 5101. SAUNAS demonstrates its ability to recover previously undetected structures in archival data, expanding exploration into the low surface brightness X-ray universe with Chandra/ACIS., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 27 pages, 19 figures. We present a new method for joint likelihood deconvolution (Jolideco) of a set of astronomical observations of the same sky region in the presence of Poisson noise. The observations may be obtained from different instruments with different resolution, and different point spread functions. Jolideco reconstructs a single flux image by optimizing the posterior distribution based on the joint Poisson likelihood of all observations under a patch-based image prior. The patch prior is parameterised via a Gaussian Mixture model which we train on high-signal-to-noise astronomical images, including data from the James Webb Telescope and the GLEAM radio survey. This prior favors correlation structures among the reconstructed pixel intensities that are characteristic of those observed in the training images. It is, however, not informative for the mean or scale of the reconstruction. By applying the method to simulated data we show that the combination of multiple observations and the patch-based prior leads to much improved reconstruction quality in many different source scenarios and signal to noise regimes. We demonstrate that with the patch prior Jolideco yields superior reconstruction quality relative to alternative standard methods such as the Richardson-Lucy method. We illustrate the results of Jolideco applied to example data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Fermi-LAT Gamma-ray Space Telescope. By comparing the measured width of a counts based and the corresponding Jolideco flux profile of an X-ray filament in SNR 1E 0102.2-721} we find the deconvolved width of 0.58+- 0.02 arcsec to be consistent with the theoretical expectation derived from the known width of the PSF., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) are thought to represent the first step in the evolutionary path of radio galaxies. In this work, we investigate the X-ray emission of two CSOs confirmed to emit at GeV energies: PKS 1718-649 and TXS 1146+596. Unveiling the origin of their observed high-energy emission is crucial to establishing the physical parameters of the radio source and understanding how CSOs interact with the surrounding medium. We combined archival and new NuSTAR observations of PKS 1718-649 and TXS 1146+596 to have a broadband X-ray coverage. For both sources, we model the broadband spectral energy distribution, from radio band up to $\gamma$-rays, to derive their physical parameters. We also discuss the role of the ambient medium in confining the source expansion, which we investigate using X-ray obscuration. For the first time, we report on X-ray detections of PKS 1718-649 and 1146+596 with NuSTAR at energies higher than 10 keV. Combining Chandra and NuSTAR observations of TXS 1146+596, we reveal the presence of a multi-temperature thermal component dominating the soft X-ray spectrum, and we interpret this finding as indicative of an AGN feedback process in action in this source. In addition, we show that two emitting electrons populations are necessary to reproduce the observed broadband spectral energy distribution of TXS 1146+596: in our models, the X-ray emission could be produced either by synchrotron radiation or by a weak X-ray corona or an ADAF-type emission. Interestingly, an additional X-ray component, i.e. a weak corona, is also required for PKS 1718-649. Moreover, we argue that heavily obscured, and possibly frustrated, sources tend to show different radio sizes with respect to unobscured, free to expand, ones., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 16 pages, 7 figures

X-ray continuum emission of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may be reflected by circumnuclear dusty tori, producing prominent fluorescence iron lines at X-ray frequencies. Here we discuss the broad-band emission of three radio-loud AGN belonging to the class of compact symmetric objects (CSOs), with detected narrow Fe\,K$\alpha$ lines. CSOs have newly-born radio jets, forming compact radio lobes with projected linear sizes of the order of a few to hundreds of parsecs. We model the radio--to--$\gamma$-ray spectra of compact lobes in {J1407+2827}, J1511+0518, and {J2022+6137}, which are among the nearest and the youngest CSOs known to date, and are characterized by an intrinsic X-ray absorbing column density of $N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}$\,cm$^{-2}$. In addition to the archival data, we analyze the newly acquired \chandra\ X-ray Observatory and Sub-Millimeter Array (SMA) observations, and also refine the $\gamma$-ray upper limits from the \fermi\ Large Area Telescope (LAT) monitoring. The new \chandra\ data exclude the presence of the extended X-ray emission components on scales larger than $1.5^{\prime \prime}$. The SMA data unveil a correlation of the spectral index of the electron distribution in the lobes and $N_{\rm H}$, which can explain the $\gamma$-ray quietness of heavily obscured CSOs. Based on our modeling, we argue that the inverse-Compton emission of compact radio lobes may account for the intrinsic X-ray continuum in all these sources. Furthermore, we propose that the observed iron lines may be produced by a reflection of the lobes' continuum from the surrounding cold dust., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, in press

We report superluminal jet motion with an apparent speed of $\beta_\mathrm{app}=1.65\pm0.57$ in the radio-quiet (RQ) low ionisation nuclear emission line region (LINER) galaxy, KISSR872. This result comes from two epoch phase-referenced very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations at 5 GHz. The detection of bulk relativistic motion in the jet of this extremely radio faint AGN, with a total 1.4 GHz flux density of 5 mJy in the 5.4 arcsec resolution Very Large Array (VLA) FIRST survey image and 1.5 mJy in the $\sim5$ milli-arcsec resolution Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) image, is the first of its kind in a RQ LINER galaxy. The presence of relativistic jets in lower accretion rate objects like KISSR872, with an Eddington ratio of 0.04, reveals that even RQ AGN can harbor relativistic jets, and evidentiates their universality over a wide range of accretion powers., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In this article, we present Gammapy, an open-source Python package for the analysis of astronomical $\gamma$-ray data, and illustrate the functionalities of its first long-term-support release, version 1.0. Built on the modern Python scientific ecosystem, Gammapy provides a uniform platform for reducing and modeling data from different $\gamma$-ray instruments for many analysis scenarios. Gammapy complies with several well-established data conventions in high-energy astrophysics, providing serialized data products that are interoperable with other software packages. Starting from event lists and instrument response functions, Gammapy provides functionalities to reduce these data by binning them in energy and sky coordinates. Several techniques for background estimation are implemented in the package to handle the residual hadronic background affecting $\gamma$-ray instruments. After the data are binned, the flux and morphology of one or more $\gamma$-ray sources can be estimated using Poisson maximum likelihood fitting and assuming a variety of spectral, temporal, and spatial models. Estimation of flux points, likelihood profiles, and light curves is also supported. After describing the structure of the package, we show, using publicly available $\gamma$-ray data, the capabilities of Gammapy in multiple traditional and novel $\gamma$-ray analysis scenarios, such as spectral and spectro-morphological modeling and estimations of a spectral energy distribution and a light curve. Its flexibility and power are displayed in a final multi-instrument example, where datasets from different instruments, at different stages of data reduction, are simultaneously fitted with an astrophysical flux model., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures

We present the first X-ray observation at sub-arcsecond resolution of the high-redshift ($z=6.18$) radio-loud quasar CFHQS J142952+544717 (J1429). The ~100 net-count 0.3-7 keV spectrum obtained from $\sim 30$ ksec Chandra exposure is best fit by a single power-law model with a photon index $\Gamma=2.0\pm0.2$ and no indication of an intrinsic absorber, implying a 3.6-72 keV rest-frame luminosity $L_{\rm X}=(2.3^{+0.6}_{-0.5})\times10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We identify a second X-ray source at 30 arcsec, distance from J1429 position, with a soft ($\Gamma\simeq 2.8$) and absorbed (equivalent hydrogen column density $N_{\rm H} <13.4\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$) spectrum, which likely contaminated J1429 spectra obtained in lower angular resolution observations. Based on the analysis of the Chandra image, the bulk of the X-ray luminosity is produced within the central $\sim 3$ kpc region, either by the disk/corona system, or by a moderately aligned jet. In this context, we discuss the source properties in comparison with samples of low- and high-redshift quasars. We find indication of a possible excess of counts over the expectations for a point-like source in a 0.5 arcsec-1.5 arcsec ($\sim 3-8$ kpc) annular region. The corresponding X-ray luminosity at J1429 redshift is $4\times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) form a distinct class of jetted active galactic nuclei (jetted-AGN). We examine a carefully selected sample of 54 CSOs, and confirm that there are two unrelated classes: an edge-dimmed, low-luminosity class (CSO 1), and an edge-brightened, high-luminosity class (CSO 2). Using statistically significant blind tests, we show that CSO 2s themselves consist of two morphologically distinct classes: CSO 2.0, having prominent hot-spots at the leading edges of narrow jets and/or narrow lobes; and CSO 2.2, without prominent hot-spots, and with broad jets and/or lobes. An intermediate class, CSO 2.1, exhibits mixed properties. The four classes occupy different, overlapping, portions of the luminosity-size plane, with the sizes of largest CSOs being $\sim 500$pc. We advance the hypothesis that CSO 2.0s are young and evolve through CSO 2.1s into CSO 2.2s, which are old (up to $\sim 5000$ yr). Thus CSOs do not evolve into larger types of jetted-AGN, but spend their whole life cycle as CSOs. The radio emission region energies in the CSO 2s we have studied range from $\sim 10^{-4}\, M_\odot {c}^2$ to $\sim 7 \, M_\odot {c}^2$. We show that the transient nature of CSO 2s, and their birthrate, can be explained through ignition in the tidal disruption events of giant stars. We also consider possibilities for tapping the spin energy of the supermassive black hole, and tapping the energy of the accretion disk, in a manner similar to, but not the same as, that which occurs in dwarf novae. Our results demonstrate conclusively that CSOs constitute a large family of AGN in which we have thus far studied only the brightest. More comprehensive radio studies, with higher sensitivity, resolution, and dynamic range, will revolutionize our understanding of AGN and the central engines that power them., Comment: 41 pages, 13 figures, 10 tables

Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) are a class of compact, jetted Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) whose jet axes are not aligned close to the line of sight, and whose observed emission is not predominantly relativistically boosted towards us. Using complete samples of CSOs, we present three independent lines of evidence, based on their relative numbers, their redshift distributions, and their size distributions, which show conclusively that most CSOs do not evolve into larger-scale radio sources. Thus CSOs belong to a distinct population of jetted-AGN. This population should be characterized as "short-lived", as opposed to "young". We show that there is a sharp upper cutoff in the CSO size distribution at $\approx$ 500 pc, which cannot result from random episodic fueling events. There is clearly something that limits the fueling to $\lesssim 100 M_\odot$. Possible origins of CSOs, if not related to the fueling, must be related to the accretion disk, or the collimation of the relativistic jets. CSOs may well have a variety of origins, with each of the above mechanisms producing subsets of CSOs. Whatever the physical mechanism(s) might be, the distinct differences between CSOs and other jetted-AGN provide crucial insights into the formation and evolution of relativistic jets in AGN and the supermassive black holes that drive them., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables

Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) are jetted Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with overall projected size < 1 kpc. The classification was introduced to distinguish these objects from the majority of known compact jetted-AGN, where the observed emission is relativistically boosted towards the observer. The original classification criteria for CSOs were: (i) evidence of emission on both sides of the center of activity, and (ii) overall size < 1 kpc. However some relativistically boosted objects with jet axes close to the line of sight appear symmetric and have been mis-classified as CSOs in the literature, thereby undermining the CSO classification. We introduce two new CSO classification criteria based on (iii) flux density variability, and (iv) the apparent velocity of components moving along the jets. As a first step towards creating a comprehensive catalog of "bona fide" CSOs, in this paper we identify 79 bona fide CSOs that meet our expanded CSO selection criteria. This sample of bona fide CSOs can be used for astrophysical studies of CSOs without fear of contamination by objects incorrectly identified as CSOs. We define three complete sub-samples of the 79 CSOs, which are suitable for statistical tests, and show that the fraction of CSOs in flux density limited samples with $\rm S_{5~GHz}$ > 700 mJy is between 6.4% and 8.2%., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

3C 223 is a radio loud, Type 2 quasar at $z=0.1365$ with an intriguing XMM-Newton spectrum that implicated it as a rare, Compton-thick ($N_{\rm H} \gtrsim 1.25 \times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) active galactic nucleus (AGN). We obtained contemporaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR spectra to fit the broad-band X-ray spectrum with the physically-motivated MYTorus and borus02 models. We confirm earlier results that the obscuring gas is patchy with both high (though not Compton-thick) levels of obscuration ($N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) and gas clouds with column densities up to an order of magnitude lower. The spectral fitting results indicate additional physical processes beyond those modeled in the spectral grids of MYTorus and borus02 impact the emergent spectrum: the Compton-scattering region may be extended beyond the putative torus; a ring of heavy Compton-thick material blocks most X-ray emission along the line of sight; or the radio jet is beamed, boosting the production of Fe K$\alpha$ line photons in the global medium compared with what is observed along the line of sight. We revisit a recent claim that no radio loud Compton-thick AGN have yet been conclusively shown to exist, finding three reported cases of radio loud AGN with global average (but not line-of-sight) column densities that are Compton-thick. Now that it is possible to separately determine line-of-sight and global column densities, inhomogeneity in the obscuring medium has consequences for how we interpet the spectrum and classify an AGN as "Compton-thick.", Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ; Figure 3 illustrates possible physical processes shaping emergent X-ray spectrum

We performed a study of high redshift ($z>2$) quasars, looking for the main differences between Radio Loud Quasars (RLQ) and Radio Quiet Quasars (RQQ) in the X-ray band. Our sample of 472 RQQ and 81 RLQ was selected by cross-matching the SDSS DR7 quasars catalog with the Chandra Source Catalog. We computed the X-ray luminosity for the two samples and confirmed the X-ray luminosity excess of RLQ over RQQ. We fit the X-ray spectra assuming the absorbed power law model and obtained the photon index ($\Gamma$) values for all the sources in the sample. We excluded quasars with a low number of counts ($<10$) and large uncertainty on the best-fit photon index ($\Gamma_{err}>1$), and obtained the mean values of $\Gamma_{RLQ}=1.70 \hspace{0.5mm}_{-0.33}^{+0.36}$ and $\Gamma_{RQQ}=2.19 \hspace{0.5mm}_{-0.44}^{+0.46}$ for the RLQ and RQQ samples, respectively, showing that the RLQ have flatter (harder) X-ray spectra than RQQ. The Kuiper-two test confirms this result with the significant difference between the RLQ and RQQ photon index distributions ($D_{k}=0.37$ and P-value $= 10^{-6}$). We also evaluated the hardness ratio distributions and confirmed that the spectra of RLQ are flatter than the spectra of the RQQ. The RLQ's hard-to-soft ratio distribution is skewed towards the hard X-ray band, while the RQQ is towards the soft X-ray band. The hard-to-medium and medium-to-soft ratios show no difference.

We report the results of joint Chandra/ACIS - NuSTAR deep observations of NGC 1167, the host galaxy of the young radio jet B2 0258+35. In the ACIS data we detect X-ray emission, extended both along and orthogonal to the jet. At the end of the SE radio jet, we find lower-energy X-ray emission that coincides with a region of CO turbulence and fast outflow motions. This suggests that the hot Interstellar Medium (ISM) may be compressed by the jet and molecular outflow, resulting in more efficient cooling. Hydrodynamic simulations of jet-ISM interaction tailored to NGC 1167 are in agreement with this conclusion and with the overall morphology and spectra of the X-ray emission. The faint hard nuclear source detected with Chandra and the stringent NuSTAR upper limits on the harder X-ray emission show that the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 1167 is in a very low-accretion state. However, the characteristics of the extended X-ray emission are more consonant to those of luminous Compton Thick AGNs, suggesting that we may be observing the remnants of a past high accretion rate episode, with sustained strong activity lasting ~ 2 x 103 yr. We conclude that NGC1167 is presently a LINER, but was an AGN in the past, given the properties of the extended X-ray emission and their similarity with those of CT AGN extended emission., Comment: ApJ, in press

Cosmological parameters encoding our understanding of the expansion history of the Universe can be constrained by the accurate estimation of time delays arising in gravitationally lensed systems. We propose TD-CARMA, a Bayesian method to estimate cosmological time delays by modelling the observed and irregularly sampled light curves as realizations of a Continuous Auto-Regressive Moving Average (CARMA) process. Our model accounts for heteroskedastic measurement errors and microlensing, an additional source of independent extrinsic long-term variability in the source brightness. The semi-separable structure of the CARMA covariance matrix allows for fast and scalable likelihood computation using Gaussian Process modeling. We obtain a sample from the joint posterior distribution of the model parameters using a nested sampling approach. This allows for ``painless'' Bayesian Computation, dealing with the expected multi-modality of the posterior distribution in a straightforward manner and not requiring the specification of starting values or an initial guess for the time delay, unlike existing methods. In addition, the proposed sampling procedure automatically evaluates the Bayesian evidence, allowing us to perform principled Bayesian model selection. TD-CARMA is parsimonious, and typically includes no more than a dozen unknown parameters. We apply TD-CARMA to six doubly lensed quasars HS 2209+1914, SDSS J1001+5027, SDSS J1206+4332, SDSS J1515+1511, SDSS J1455+1447, SDSS J1349+1227, estimating their time delays as $-21.96 \pm 1.448$, $120.93 \pm 1.015$, $111.51 \pm 1.452$, $210.80 \pm 2.18$, $45.36 \pm 1.93$ and $432.05 \pm 1.950$ respectively. These estimates are consistent with those derived in the relevant literature, but are typically two to four times more precise.

A variety of statistical methods for understanding variability in the time domain for low count rate X-ray and gamma-ray sources are explored. Variability can be detected using nonparametric (Anderson-Darling and overdispersion tests) and parametric (sequential likelihood-based tests) tools. Once detected, variability can be characterized by nonparametric (autocorrelation function, structure function,wavelet analysis) and parametric (multiple change point model such as Bayesian Blocks, integer autoregressive models, C-statistic and Poisson regression) methods. New multidimensional variability detection approaches are outlined. Software packages designed for high energy data analysis are deficient but tools are available in the R statistical software environment. We examine Chandra observations of the powerful Fanaroff-Riley class II (FR II) radio galaxy Cygnus A for an X-ray counterpart to the radio transient Cygnus A-2 that was first detected in 2011. Observations are performed using the High-Resolution Camera (HRC) instrument in order to spatially resolve Cygnus A-2 and the central Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) at a separation of 0.42 arcseconds. Simulated images are generated of the emission region, and radial profiles for the region of interest are extracted. A comparison between the simulations and observations reveals no X-ray detection of Cygnus A-2 to a 0.5-7.0 keV flux upper limit of $1.04 \times 10^{-12}\rm\,erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}$, or a rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosity of $8.6\times 10^{42}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$. We estimate the black hole mass of Cygnus A-2 based on our X-ray flux limit and find it to be consistent with a flaring black hole rather than a steadily accreting source. The HRC observations are additionally compared with archival ACIS data from 2016-2017, and both the overall morphology and the flux limits of the AGN complex agree between the two datasets. This consistency is despite the pile-up effect in ACIS which was previously considered to bias the observed morphology of the AGN. We examine the fundamental plane of black hole activity for correlations with redshift and radio loudness in both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasar populations. Sources are compiled from archival data of both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars over redshifts $0.1 < z < 5.0$ to produce a sample of 353 sources with known X-ray, radio, and black hole mass measurements. A fundamental plane of accretion activity is fit to a sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars, and we find a dichotomy between radio-loud and radio-quiet sources. The set of best-fit equations that best describe the two samples are $\log{L_{R}} = (1.12 \pm 0.06) \log{L_{X}} - (0.20 \pm 0.07) \log{M} -(5.64 \pm 2.99)$ for our radio-loud sample and $\log{L_{R}} = (0.48 \pm 0.06) \log{L_{X}} + (0.50 \pm 0.08) \log{M} + (15.26 \pm 2.66)$ for our radio-quiet sample. Our results suggest that the average radio-quiet quasar emission is consistent with advection dominated accretion, while a combination of jet and disc emission dominates in radio-loud quasars. We additionally examine redshift trends amongst the radio-loud and radio-quiet samples, and we observe a redshift dependence for the fundamental plane of radio-loud quasars. We present a brief overview of a very extensive studies of the group of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that transitioned to radio-loud state over the past few decades. The sample consists of twelve sources, both quasars and galaxies, showing the characteristics of gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) objects undergoing relatively rapid changes, due to the evolution of their newly-born radio jets. Discussed objects also show a wide range of physical parameters such as bolometric luminosity, black hole mass and jet power, suggesting a great diversity among young active galactic nuclei and their hosts. Furthermore, we introduce a new observational project, the aim of which will be to investigate and gain a more in-depth understanding of the phenomenon of slow radio transients., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), young jetted-AGN of overall projected size <1 kpc, are of great interest due to their youth and evolution. The classification was introduced to distinguish between ~95% of powerful compact extragalactic radio sources in flux density limited samples that are dominated by asymmetric emission due to relativistic beaming from jets aligned close to the line of sight, and ~5% of objects that are not. The original classification criteria were: (i) overall projected diameter smaller than ~1 kpc, (ii) identified center of activity, and (iii) symmetric jet structure about the center. There is confusion and erosion of the value of the CSO classification due to misclassifications. Many jets contain compact bright features outside core, resulting in a GPS total spectrum and a "compact double" appearance, and some objects with jet axes aligned close to the line of sight appear symmetric because the approaching jet is projected on both sides of the core. To eliminate the confusion, we propose adding (iv) slow radio variability and (v) low apparent velocity of bright features moving along the jets to the above CSO criteria. We present a model for the broadband radio-to-$\gamma$-ray spectral energy distribution of the compact radio source, PKS 1718-649. Because of its young age (100 years) and proximity ($z=0.014$), PKS 1718-649 offers a unique opportunity to study nuclear conditions and the jet/host galaxy feedback process at the time of an initial radio jet expansion. PKS 1718-649 is one of a handful of young radio jets with $\gamma$-ray emission confirmed with the Fermi/LAT detector. We show that this $\gamma$-ray emission can be successfully explained by Inverse Compton scattering of the ultraviolet photons, presumably from an accretion flow, off non-thermal electrons in the expanding radio lobes. The origin of the X-ray emission in PKS 1718-649 is more elusive. While Inverse Compton scattering of the infrared photons emitted by a cold gas in the vicinity of the expanding radio lobes contributes significantly to the X-ray band, the data require that an additional X-ray emission mechanism is at work, e.g. a weak X-ray corona or a radiatively inefficient accretion flow, expected from a LINER type nucleus such as that of PKS 1718-649. We find that the jet in PKS 1718-649 has low power, $L_j \simeq 2.2 \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and expands in an environment with density $n_0 \simeq 20$ cm$^{-3}$. The inferred mass accretion rate and gas mass reservoir within 50-100 pc are consistent with estimates from the literature obtained by tracing molecular gas in the innermost region of the host galaxy with SINFONI and ALMA., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, published in ApJ

Cluster-central gigahertz peak and compact steep spectrum (CSS) sources offer an opportunity to study the earliest phases of AGN feedback, but few have yet been examined in detail. We present results from radio and X-ray observations of 1321+045, a CSS source in a 4.4 keV cluster at z=0.263. The cluster has a strongly cooling core, and disturbances from a minor cluster merger may have triggered a period of jet activity which formed the 16 kpc radio lobes 2.0 [+0.3,-0.2] Myr ago. However, new VLBA imaging shows a ~20 pc jet on a different projected axis, which is probably only a few hundred years old. We consider possible histories for the system, with either one or two periods of jet activity. The radio source 1146+596 is hosted by an elliptical/S0 galaxy NGC\,3894, with a low-luminosity active nucleus. The radio structure is compact, suggesting a very young age of the jets in the system. Recently, the source has been confirmed as a high-energy (HE, $>0.1$\,GeV) $\gamma$-ray emitter, in the most recent accumulation of the {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT) data. Here we report on the analysis of the archival {\it Chandra} X-ray Observatory data for the central part of the galaxy, consisting of a single 40\,ksec-long exposure. We have found that the core spectrum is best fitted by a combination of an ionized thermal plasma with the temperature of $\simeq 0.8$\,keV, and a moderately absorbed power-law component (photon index $\Gamma = 1.4\pm 0.4$, hydrogen column density $N_{\rm H}/10^{22}$\,cm$^{-2}$\,$= 2.4\pm 0.7$). We have also detected the iron K$\alpha$ line at $6.5\pm 0.1$\,keV, with a large equivalent width of EW\,$= 1.0_{-0.5}^{+0.9}$\,keV. Based on the simulations of the {\it Chandra}'s Point Spread Function (PSF), we have concluded that, while the soft thermal component is extended on the scale of the galaxy host, the hard X-ray emission within the narrow photon energy range 6.0--7.0\,keV originates within the unresolved core (effectively the central kpc radius). The line is therefore indicative of the X-ray reflection from a cold neutral gas in the central regions of NGC\,3894. We discuss the implications of our findings in the context of the X-ray Baldwin effect. We present new observations of the odd $z=0.96$ weak-line quasar PG1407+265, and report the discovery of CXOU J140927.9+261813, a $z=0.68$ X-ray cluster. Archival X-ray photometry spanning nearly four decades reveals that PG1407+265 is variable at the 1 dex level on a timescale of years. V-band variability is present with an amplitude less than 0.1 mag. The emission-line properties of PG1407+265 also reveal clear evidence for a powerful inflow or outflow due to near- or super-Eddington accretion, having a mechanical luminosity of order $10^{48}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Our follow-up {\sl Chandra} exposure centered on this object reveal a foreground $z=0.68$ cluster roughly 1' x 1'.5 in extent, offset to the east of PG1407+265, roughly coincident with the $z=0.68$ radio galaxy FIRST J140927.8+261818. This non-cool-core cluster contributes about 10\% of the X-ray flux of PG1407+265, has a mass of $(0.6- 5.5)\times10^{14} M_\odot$, and an X-ray gas temperature of ($2.2-4.3$) keV. Because the projected position of the quasar lies at about twice that of the cluster's inferred Einstein radius, lensing by the cluster is unlikely to explain the quasar's unusual properties. The analysis of individual X-ray sources that appear in a crowded field can easily be compromised by the misallocation of recorded events to their originating sources. Even with a small number of sources, that nonetheless have overlapping point spread functions, the allocation of events to sources is a complex task that is subject to uncertainty. We develop a Bayesian method designed to sift high-energy photon events from multiple sources with overlapping point spread functions, leveraging the differences in their spatial, spectral, and temporal signatures. The method probabilistically assigns each event to a given source. Such a disentanglement allows more detailed spectral or temporal analysis to focus on the individual component in isolation, free of contamination from other sources or the background. We are also able to compute source parameters of interest like their locations, relative brightness, and background contamination, while accounting for the uncertainty in event assignments. Simulation studies that include event arrival time information demonstrate that the temporal component improves event disambiguation beyond using only spatial and spectral information. The proposed methods correctly allocate up to 65% more events than the corresponding algorithms that ignore event arrival time information. We apply our methods to two stellar X-ray binaries, UV Cet and HBC515 A, observed with Chandra. We demonstrate that our methods are capable of removing the contamination due to a strong flare on UV Cet B in its companion approximately 40 times weaker during that event, and that evidence for spectral variability at timescales of a few ks can be determined in HBC515 Aa and HBC515 Ab.

The radio galaxy 1321+045 is a rare example of a young, compact steep spectrum source located in the center of a z=0.263 galaxy cluster. Using a combination of Chandra, VLBA, VLA, MERLIN and IRAM 30m observations, we investigate the conditions which have triggered this outburst. We find that the previously identified 5 kpc scale radio lobes are probably no longer powered by the AGN, which seems to have launched a new ~20 pc jet on a different axis, likely within the last few hundred years. We estimate the enthalpy of the lobes to be 8.48 [+6.04,-3.56] x10^57 erg, only sufficient to balance cooling in the surrounding 16 kpc for ~9 Myr. The cluster ICM properties are similar to those of rapidly cooling nearby clusters, with a low central entropy (8.6 [+2.2,-1.4] kev cm^2 within 8 kpc), short central cooling time (390 [+170,-150] Myr), and t_cool/t_ff and t_cool/t_eddy ratios indicative of thermal instability out to ~45 kpc. Despite previous detection of Halpha emission from the BCG, our IRAM 30m observations do not detect CO emission in either the (1-0) or (3-2) transitions. We place 3sigma limits on the molecular gas mass of M_mol <=7.7x10^9 Msol and <=5.6x10^9 Msol from the two lines respectively. We find indications of a recent minor cluster merger which has left a ~200 kpc tail of stripped gas in the ICM, and probably induced sloshing motions., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ, v2 updates references and corrects minor typographical errors identified at the proof stage

A recent multi-year Caltech-NRAO Stripe 82 Survey (CNSS) revealed a group of objects that appeared as new radio sources after $>$5--20 years of absence. They are transient phenomena with respect to the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters (FIRST) survey and constitute the first unbiased sample of renewed radio activity. Here we present the follow-up, radio, optical and X-ray study of them. The group consist of 12 sources, both quasars and galaxies with wide redshift ($\rm 0.04 < z < 1.7$) and luminosity ($\rm 2224.5$) distribution. Their radio properties in the first phase of activity, namely the convex spectra and compact morphology, allow them all to be classified as gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) sources. We conclude that the spectral changes are a consequence of the evolution of newly-born radio jets. Our observations show that over the next few years of activity the GPS galaxies keep the convex shape of the spectrum, while GPS quasars rapidly transform into flat-spectrum sources, which may result in them not being recognized as young sources. The wide range of bolometric luminosities, black hole masses and jet powers among the transient sources indicates even greater population diversity in the group of young radio objects. We also suggest that small changes of the accretion disc luminosity (accretion rate) may be sufficient to ignite low-power radio activity that evolves on the scale of decades.

We present Chandra X-ray observations of 14 radio-loud quasars at redshifts $3 < z < 4$, selected from a well-defined sample. All quasars are detected in the 0.5-7.0 keV energy band, and resolved X-ray features are detected in five of the objects at distances of 1-12" from the quasar core. The X-ray features are spatially coincident with known radio features for four of the five quasars. This indicates that these systems contain X-ray jets. X-ray fluxes and luminosities are measured, and jet-to-core X-ray flux ratios are estimated. The flux ratios are consistent with those observed for nearby jet systems, suggesting that the observed X-ray emission mechanism is independent of redshift. For quasars with undetected jets, an upper limit on the average X-ray jet intensity is estimated using a stacked image analysis. Emission spectra of the quasar cores are extracted and modeled to obtain best-fit photon indices, and an Fe K emission line is detected from one quasar in our sample. We present the spatial analysis of five Compton thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGNs), including MKN 573, NGC 1386, NGC 3393, NGC 5643, and NGC 7212, for which high resolution Chandra observations are available. For each source, we find hard X-ray emission (>3 keV) extending to ~kpc scales along the ionization cone, and for some sources, in the cross-cone region. This collection represents the first, high-signal sample of CT AGN with extended hard X-ray emission for which we can begin to build a more complete picture of this new population of AGN. We investigate the energy dependence of the extended X-ray emission, including possible dependencies on host galaxy and AGN properties, and find a correlation between the excess emission and obscuration, suggesting a connection between the nuclear obscuring material and the galactic molecular clouds. Furthermore, we find that the soft X-ray emission extends farther than the hard X-rays along the ionization cone, which may be explained by a galactocentric radial dependence on the density of molecular clouds due to the orientation of the ionization cone with respect to the galactic disk. These results are consistent with other CT AGN with observed extended hard X-ray emission (e.g., ESO 428-G014 and the Ma et al. 2020 CT AGN sample), further demonstrating the ubiquity of extended hard X-ray emission in CT AGN., Comment: 29 pages, 22 figures, 7 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the detection of extended X-ray emission from two high-redshift radio quasars. These quasars, J1405+0415 at $z$=3.208 and J1610+1811 at $z$=3.118, were observed in a Chandra snapshot survey selected from a complete sample of the radio-brightest quasars in the overlap area of the VLA-FIRST radio survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The extended X-ray emission is located along the line connecting the core to a radio knot or hotspot, favoring the interpretation of X-ray jets. The inferred rest frame jet X-ray luminosities from 2--30 keV would be of order 10$^{45}$ erg~s$^{-1}$ if emitted isotropically and without relativistic beaming. In the scenario of inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), X-ray jets without a coincident radio counterpart may be common, and should be readily detectable to redshifts even beyond 3.2 due to the (1+$z$)$^4$ increase of the CMB energy density compensating for the (1+$z$)$^{-4}$ cosmological diminution of surface brightness. If these can be X-ray confirmed, they would be the second and third examples of quasar X-ray jets without detection of underlying continuous radio jets., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. We investigate the ionized gas excitation and kinematics in the inner $4.3 \times 6.2$ kpc$^{2}$ of the merger radio galaxy 4C +29.30. Using optical integral field spectroscopy with the Gemini North Telescope, we present flux distributions, line-ratio maps, peak velocities and velocity dispersion maps as well as channel maps with a spatial resolution of $\approx 955$ pc. We observe high blueshifts of up to $\sim -650$ km s$^{-1}$, in a region $\sim 1''$ south of the nucleus (the southern knot, SK), which also presents high velocity dispersions ($\sim 250$ km s$^{-1}$), which we attribute to an outflow. A possible redshifted counterpart is observed north from the nucleus (the northern knot, NK). We propose that these regions correspond to a bipolar outflow possibly due to the interaction of the radio jet with the ambient gas. We estimate a total ionized gas mass outflow rate of $\dot{M}_{out} = 25.4 \substack{+11.5 \\ -7.5}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ with a kinetic power of $\dot{E} = 8.1 \substack{+10.7 \\ -4.0} \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which represents $5.8 \substack{+7.6 \\ -2.9} \%$ of the AGN bolometric luminosity. These values are higher than usually observed in nearby active galaxies with the same bolometric luminosities and could imply a significant impact of the outflows in the evolution of the host galaxy. The excitation is higher in the NK (that correlates with extended X-ray emission, indicating the presence of hotter gas) than in the SK, supporting a scenario in which an obscuring dust lane is blocking part of the AGN radiation to reach the southern region of the galaxy., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted by MNRAS. Despite the fact that kpc-scale inverse-Compton (iC) scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons into the X-ray band is mandated, proof of detection in resolved quasar jets is often insecure. High redshift provides favourable conditions due to the increased energy density of the CMB, and it allows constraints to be placed on the radio synchrotron-emitting electron component at high energies that are otherwise inaccessible. We present new X-ray, optical and radio results from Chandra, HST and the VLA for the core and resolved jet in the $z=3.69$ quasar PKS J1421-0643. The X-ray jet extends for about $4.5''$ (32 kpc projected length). The jet's radio spectrum is abnormally steep and consistent with electrons being accelerated to a maximum Lorentz factor of about 5000. Results argue in favour of the detection of inverse-Compton X-rays for modest magnetic field strength of a few nT, Doppler factor of about 4, and viewing angle of about $15^\circ$, and predict the jet to be largely invisible in most other spectral bands including the far- and mid-infrared and high-energy gamma-ray. The jet power is estimated to be about $3 \times 10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$ which is of order a tenth of the quasar bolometric power, for an electron--positron jet. The jet radiative power is only about 0.07 per cent of the jet power, with a smaller radiated power ratio if the jet contains heavy particles, so most of the jet power is available for heating the intergalactic medium., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures. We present a comprehensive analysis of Chandra X-ray observations of 15 young radio quasars at redshifts $4.5 < z < 5.0$. All sources are detected in the $0.5-7.0$ keV energy band. Emission spectra are extracted, and the average photon index for the sample is measured to be $1.5\pm0.1$. Unabsorbed rest-frame $2-10$ keV luminosities are found to range between $(0.5-23.2) \times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The optical-X-ray power-law spectral index $\alpha_{ox}$ is calculated for each source using optical/UV data available in the literature. The $\alpha_{ox}$-UV relationship is compared with other quasar surveys, and an anticorrelation is observed that agrees with independent estimates. Rest-frame radio and X-ray luminosities are established for the sample, and a correlation between the luminosities is detected. These multiwavelength results reinforce a lack of spectral evolution for quasars over a broad redshift range. We additionally identify three quasars from our multiwavelength analysis that are statistically significant outliers, with one source being a Compton-thick candidate in the early universe, and discuss each in detail., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 13 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

We have carried out a Chandra X-ray and multi-frequency radio VLBA study of the AGN TXS 0128+554, which is associated with the Fermi gamma-ray source 4FGL J0131.2+5547. The AGN is unresolved in a target 19.3 ks Chandra image, and its spectrum is well fit by a simple absorbed power law model, with no distinguishable spectral features. Its relatively soft X-ray spectrum compared to other CSOs may be indicative of a thermal emission component, for which we were able to obtain an upper temperature limit of kT = 0.08 keV. The compact radio morphology and measured advance speed of 0.32c +- 0.07c indicate a kinematic age of only 82 y +- 17 y, placing TXS 0128+554 among the youngest members of the compact symmetric object (CSO) class. The lack of compact, inverted spectrum hotspots and an emission gap between the bright inner jet and outer radio lobe structure indicate that the jets have undergone episodic activity, and were re-launched a decade ago. The predicted gamma-ray emission from the lobes, based on an inverse Compton-emitting cocoon model, is three orders of magnitude below the observed Fermi LAT flux. A comparison to other Fermi-detected and non-Fermi detected CSOs with redshift z<0.1 indicates that the gamma-ray emission likely originates in the inner jet/core region, and that nearby, recently launched AGN jets are primary candidates for detection by the Fermi LAT instrument., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables; accepted by ApJ; full electronic table 2 is available from the preprint source

We present an analysis of the new, deep (94\,ksec) {\it Chandra} ACIS-S observation of radio-loud active galaxy CGCG\,292$-$057, characterized by a LINER-type nucleus and a complex radio structure that indicates intermittent jet activity. On the scale of the host galaxy bulge, we detected excess X-ray emission with a spectrum best fit by a thermal plasma model with a temperature of $\sim 0.8$\,keV. We argue that this excess emission results from compression and heating of the hot diffuse fraction of the interstellar medium displaced by the expanding inner, $\sim 20$\, kpc-scale lobes observed in this restarted radio galaxy. The nuclear X-ray spectrum of the target clearly displays an ionized iron line at $\sim 6.7$\,keV, and is best fitted with a phenomenological model consisting of a power-law (photon index $\simeq 1.8$) continuum absorbed by a relatively large amount of cold matter (hydrogen column density $\simeq 0.7 \times 10^{23}$\,cm$^{-2}$), and partly scattered (fraction $\sim 3\%$) by ionized gas, giving rise to a soft excess component and K$\alpha$ line from iron ions. We demonstrate that the observed X-ray spectrum, particularly the equivalent width of Fe\,\texttt{XXV} K$\alpha$ (of order $0.3$\,keV) can in principle, be explained in a scenario involving a Compton-thin gas located at the scale of the broad-lined region in this source and photoionized by nuclear illumination. Here we present an analysis of the X-ray morphology and flux variability of the particularly bright and extended Western hotspot in the nearest powerful (FR II-type) radio galaxy, Pictor A, based on data obtained with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The hotspot marks the position where the relativistic jet, that originates in the active nucleus of the system, interacts with the intergalactic medium, at hundreds-of-kiloparsec distances from the host galaxy, forming a termination shock that converts jet bulk kinetic energy to internal energy of the plasma. The hotspot is bright in X-rays due to the synchrotron emission of electrons accelerated to ultra-relativistic energies at the shock front. In our analysis, we make use of several Chandra observations targeting the hotspot over the last decades with various exposures and off-axis angles. For each pointing, we study in detail the PSF, which allows us to perform the image deconvolution, and to resolve the hotspot structure. In particular, the brightest segment of the X-ray hotspot is observed to be extended in the direction perpendicular to the jet, forming a thin, $\sim$3 kpc-long, feature that we identify with the front of the reverse shock. The position of this feature agrees well with the position of the optical intensity peak of the hotspot, but is clearly off-set from the position of the radio intensity peak, located $\sim$1 kpc further downstream. In addition, we measure the net count rate on the deconvolved images, finding a gradual flux decrease by about 30% over the 15-year timescale of the monitoring., Comment: revised version, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Recent observations of nearby Compton thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with Chandra have resolved hard (>3 keV) X-ray emission extending out from the central supermassive black hole to kiloparsec scales, challenging the long-held belief that the characteristic hard X-ray continuum and fluorescent Fe K lines originate in the inner ~parsec due to the excitation of obscuring material. In this paper we present the results of the most recent Chandra ACIS-S observations of NGC 7212, a CT AGN in a compact group of interacting galaxies, with a total effective exposure of ~150 ks. We find ~20 percent of the observed emission is found outside of the central ~kiloparsec, with ~17 percent associated with the soft X-rays, and ~3 percent with hard X-ray continuum and Fe K line. This emission is extended both along the ionization cone and in the cross-cone direction up to ~3.8 kpc scales. The spectrum of NGC 7212 is best represented by a mixture of thermal and photoionization models that indicate the presence of complex gas interactions. These observations are consistent with what is observed in other CT AGN (e.g., ESO 428-G014, NGC 1068), providing further evidence that this may be a common phenomenon. We present a systematic analysis of the mid-infrared (MIR) properties of the youngest radio galaxies, based on low-resolution data provided by the {\it WISE} and {\it IRAS} satellites. We restrict our analysis to sources with available X-ray data that constitute the earliest phase of radio galaxy evolution, i.e. those classified as Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and/or Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs). In our sample of 29 objects, we find that the host galaxies are predominantly red/yellow ellipticals, with some of them displaying distorted morphology. We find a variety of MIR colors, and observe that the sources in which the MIR emission is dominated by the ISM component uniformly populate the region occupied by galaxies with a wide range of pronounced ($\geq 0.5 M_{\odot}$\,yr$^{-1}$) star formation activity. We compare the MIR color distribution in our sample to that in the general population of local AGN, in the population of evolved FR\,II radio galaxies, and also in the population of radio galaxies with recurrent jet activity. We conclude that the triggering of radio jets in AGN does not differentiate between elliptical hosts with substantially different fractions of young stars; instead there is a relationship between the jet duty cycle and the ongoing star formation. The distribution of the sub-sample of our sources with $z<0.4$ on the low-resolution MIR vs. absorption-corrected X-ray luminosity plane is consistent with the distribution of a sample of local AGN. The field of astronomy has arrived at a turning point in terms of size and complexity of both datasets and scientific collaboration. Commensurately, algorithms and statistical models have begun to adapt --- e.g., via the onset of artificial intelligence --- which itself presents new challenges and opportunities for growth. This white paper aims to offer guidance and ideas for how we can evolve our technical and collaborative frameworks to promote efficient algorithmic development and take advantage of opportunities for scientific discovery in the petabyte era. We discuss challenges for discovery in large and complex data sets; challenges and requirements for the next stage of development of statistical methodologies and algorithmic tool sets; how we might change our paradigms of collaboration and education; and the ethical implications of scientists' contributions to widely applicable algorithms and computational modeling. We start with six distinct recommendations that are supported by the commentary following them. Here we discuss the jet production efficiency in a sample of 17 young radio galaxies with measured redshifts, kinematic ages, and nuclear X-ray fluxes, for which the observed luminosities of compact jets/lobes and accretion disks correspond to the same episode of the AGN activity. For the targets, we analyze the available optical data, estimating the bolometric luminosities of the accretion disks $L_{\rm bol}$, and the black hole masses; we also derive the minimum jet kinetic luminosities, $P_{\rm j}$. With such, we investigate the distribution of our sample in the three-dimensional space of the accretion rate $\lambda_{\rm Edd} \equiv L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd}$, the nuclear X-ray luminosity $L_{\rm X}$ considered here as a limit for the emission of the disk coronae, and $P_{\rm j}$, expressing the latter two parameters either in the Eddington units, or in the units of the disk luminosity. We find that (i) the accretion rate $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ in our sample is distributed within a narrow range $\lambda_{\rm Edd} \sim 0.01 - 0.2$; (ii) the normalized jet power $P_{\rm j}/L_{\rm Edd}$ formally correlates with the accretion rate $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$, with some saturation at the largest values $\lambda_{\rm Edd}> 0.05$; (iii) the jet production efficiency $\eta_{\rm jet} \equiv P_{\rm j}/\dot{M}_{\rm acc} c^2$ spans a range from $\eta_{\rm jet} \lesssim 10^{-3}$ up to $\sim 0.2$ at maximum, which is below the level expected for magnetically arrested disks around maximally spinning black holes; and (iv) there is a diversification in $\eta_{\rm jet}$ on the hardness--intensity diagram $L_{\rm X}/L_{\rm bol} - \lambda_{\rm Edd}$, with the jets being produced most efficiently during the high/hard states, and suppressed during the soft states., Comment: the Astrophysical Journal, in press
