The article discusses the conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), focusing on the causes of the conflict and potential solutions. Other topics of the article include relations between DRC, Uganda, and Rwanda over rare mineral mines in DRC, Congolese militant groups such as the National Congress for the Defense of People (CNDP) and the March 23 Movement (M23), and efforts of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) to create peace in eastern DRC.

In this article the authors examine relations between the Russian Federation and African nations. The article was written to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples which declared an end to colonial rule throughout Africa. A number of issues are addressed including Africa as a source of minerals and other raw materials, infectious diseases in Africa, and a visit to Africa undertaken by Dmitry Medvedev, the president of Russia.

Eleven virus strains were isolated from ticks Hyalomma asiaticum asiaticum Schulce et Schlottke, 1929, and Hyalomma plumbeum plumbeum Panzer, 1796, collected in 1971-1974 in desert regions of the Uzbec S.S.R. and the Turkmen S.S.R. According to CF test the strains were closely related to each other and not antigenically connected with viruses from antigenic groups A, B, California, CHF-Congo, Bakau, Bunyamwera, Ganjam, Kaisodi, Qalyub, Kemerovo, Quaranfil, Simbu, Turlock, Hughes, Uukuniemi, Tete and 21 ungrouped viruses isolated from ticks. The virus was named 'Tamdy' after the place of isolation of a prototype strain LEIV-1308 Uz. The virus does not agglutinate goose erythrocytes, it is pathogenic for suckling mice and 3 weeks old mice by intracerebral infection. Replication of a virus with CPE in cell cultures-L, Rh, A-and without CPE-in pig embryo kidney cell cultures-was demonstrated. According to ultra-filtration and electron microscope data the size of the virus is about 90 nm. It is rather sensitive to lipid solvents and is an RNA-virus. Three identical strains of an arbovirus were isolated from 475 Ornithodoros papillipes ticks collected in June, 1972, in burrows of the great gerbil (Rhombomys opimus Licht., 1882) in the environs of Beshkent, Karshinsk steppe, Uzbek S.S.R. The isolate was found to range among flaviviruses. Complement-fixation, agar diffusion precipitation and neutralization tests is tissue culture and mice indicated a one-way antigenic relationship between the isolate and West Nile virus. However, the pattern of differences between them made it possible to consider the isolated agent as a new virus, 'Karshi' virus. In the past 10 years, the total rate of traumatism on the Baikal-Amur main line has reduced by 15% at the expense of occupational traumatism, whereas the rate of non-occupational injuries is on the rise. Males (86%) are prevalent among the victims. The most all-bodied persons (aged 21-40 years) account for 85.1%. Friday and Saturday are the days marked by 33.5% of all injuries. The injury pattern is changing for the worse. The incidence of fractures of the skull and spine is on the increase. This leads to an increase in treatment length. The influence of some sociohygienic factors on the traumatism of workers (Mostostroy Trust, Tynda; Aluminum-Producing Plant, Shelekhov) is being comprehensively studied. The results will allow the administers to be proposed concrete recommendations to reduce traumatism rates.

The impact of the North conditions on the human body has been studied. There are high morbidity and mortality rates, abnormal pregnancy, premature and abnormal labors, and congenital malformations in the newborn. A complex of medical and prophylactic measures has been worked out to protect human health as a result of the studies of the regularities of general and occupational diseases at some enterprises in the Far North, Yakutia, and Buryatia.

The authors emphasize the usefulness of parallel studies, based on monitoring the most important components of the parasitic systems of several nosologic forms, co-inhabiting the studied territories. Such studies will improve the informative value of the data and reveal the common regularities in the development of sympatric foci of zoonoses. The knowledge of such regularities will help develop ecologically safe methods for regulation of the foci and sanitization of the territory.
