Histamine is a biogenic amine with various physiological functions. However, excessive consumption of histamine can lead to various symptoms, and pose a threat to human lives. A ratiometric fluorescent test strip for visual detection of histamine was developed based on CB-Ni2+@CDs probes. As the concentration of histamine increases, the test strips exhibit a transition in fluorescence signal from yellow-green to blue. The RGB values were extracted from the images, and used for quantitative analysis of histamine. The method had a linear range of 0–1.0 mM, with a detection limit of 0.086 mM. The test strips were employed for the detection of histamine, and the recovery rate was found to be in the range of 88.3% to 104.69%, indicating a high level of accuracy. The uniqueness of the test strips lies in their ability to be produced simply by mixing CB, Ni2+ on a suitable polyvinyl alcohol/wood cellulose fiber substrate.

The incidence rate of gout is increasing year by year, and it has now become the second largest metabolic di-sease after diabetes in China, bringing great harm to the health of patients. Patients with refractory gout often have poor control of blood uric acid level and severe disease conditions, which should be taken seriously by people. Therefore, we invited Chinese traditional and Western medical experts with rich experience in the diagnosis and treatment of gout in China to formulate Expert consensus on integrated traditional Chinese traditional and Western medicine therapy for refractory gout, with reference to the guidelines and consensus on gout-related diseases in China and globally. This consensus aims to standardize the disease management process of refractory gout, give recommendations to medications in integrated traditional Chinese traditional and Western medicine therapy for refractory gout, and provide more practical guidance for the diagnosis and treatment of refractory gout.

We present target ionization and charge exchange cross sections in a collision between C5+ ion and H atom. We treat the collision dynamics classically using a four-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) and a four-body quasi-classical Monte Carlo (QCTMC) model when the Heisenberg correction term is added to the standard CTMC model via model potential. The calculations were performed in the projectile energy range between 1.0Â keV/amu and 10 MeV/amu. We found that the cross sections obtained by the QCTMC model are higher than that of the cross sections calculated by the standard CTMC model and these cross sections are closer to the previous experimental and theoretical data. Moreover, for the case of ionization, we show that the interaction between the projectile and the target electrons plays a dominant role in the enhancement of the cross sections at lower energies. This paper examines the distribution and properties of agreement-drop constructions in Singlish, which are distinguished by the absence of overt subject agreement morphology. I demonstrate that these constructions are distinct from their minimally different fully-agreeing counterparts in that they (i) bleed object topicalisation, (ii) block the extraction of adjuncts which are lower in the structure, (iii) are scopally frozen, (iv) are unable to be embedded under regret-class predicates, and (v) impose a specificity condition on their subjects. I argue that these properties rule out prior characterisations of the alternation as the output of free variation in the PF. On the basis that agreement-drop constructions in Singlish consistently parallels topicalisation structures cross-linguistically, I sketch a syntactic account that unifies the two constructions within the syntax.

Chicoric acid (CA), an active phenolic acid of Echinacea purpurea (Linn.) Moench, has been demonstrated to exhibit antioxidative, antiviral and immunological activities. A prior study showed that CA is a water-soluble compound with low bioavailability. The current study was performed to study the intestinal absorption mechanism of CA and improve its bioavailability using natural biodegradable chitosan. A Caco-2 monolayer cell model was established to characterise the mechanisms involved in the intestinal absorption of CA. The bioavailability improvement of CA was studied in Sprague–Dawley rats after oral (20 mg/kg) administration of 0.5% chitosan. In vitro, the results showed that the absorption transport of CA was fairly poor, with Papp values of 8.2 × 10−8 to 2.1 × 10−7 cm/s in the absorption direction and 1.5 × 10−7 to 2.6 × 10−7 cm/s in the secretory direction. The permeability was increased by EDTA and chitosan in both directions. Moreover, the transport through the intestinal monolayer was H+ dependent, and P-glycoprotein and OATP2B1 transporters were involved in the intestinal transport of CA. In vivo, the absorption of CA was increased and accelerated with chitosan in rats because the bioavailability was 1.74-fold that of the prototype drug. The above mentioned results indicated that CA was a poor absorption drug and that paracellular and carrier-mediated trancellular transport both participated in its transport route. Chitosan is an excellent absorption enhancer for CA. The transport characteristics uncovered in this study lay the groundwork for further studies directed toward the development and utilisation of its new formulations.

Purpose: To determine references for penile circumference according to age in prepubertal children and whether this measurement can be used as a basic penile parameter along with stretched penile length in prepubertal children. Materials and Methods: A total of 750 children (mean age, 4.2±3.4 years) aged under 14 years without penile problems were enrolled in this study. Children with penile or testicular abnormalities were excluded. All data were gathered at the outpatient clinic by a single pediatric urologist from July 2017 to April 2020. Penile parameters (baseline and stretched penile length, penile circumference) and testicular volumes were measured by using an elastic ruler and a Prader orchidometer, respectively. Results: Mean baseline and stretched penile lengths were 3.0±1.0 cm and 4.2±1.0 cm, respectively. The mean penile circumference was 4.2±0.9 cm. The stretched penile length was similar to penile circumference (p=0.425). This similarity was found for each age group except for the 0–1-year-old and 3–4-year-old age groups (p=0.001 and p=0.034, respectively). As children grow into adolescence, stretched penile length increases significantly compared to penile circumference. Conclusions: Penile circumference increased with age like stretched penile length and testicular volume in prepubertal children. Stretched penile length and penile circumference were found to be similar. This study can be used as a basic reference for penile circumference values in prepubertal children.

The straightforward synthesis of three cationic boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives and their mitochondria-targeting and photodynamic therapeutic (PDT) capabilities are reported. Two cancer cell lines (HeLa and MCF-7) were used to investigate the PDT activity of the dyes. Compared to their non-halogenated counterparts, halogenated BODIPY dyes exhibit lower fluorescence quantum yields and enable the efficient production of singlet oxygen species. Following LED light irradiation at 520 nm, the synthesized dyes displayed good PDT capabilities against the treated cancer cell lines, with low cytotoxicity in the dark. In addition, functionalization of the BODIPY backbone with a cationic ammonium moiety enhanced the hydrophilicity of the synthesized dyes and, consequently, their uptake by the cells. The results presented here collectively demonstrate the potential of cationic BODIPY-based dyes as therapeutic drugs for anticancer photodynamic therapy.

Background/Aims: For the treatment of malignant biliary obstruction, endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage (ERBD) has been widely accepted as a standard procedure. However, post-ERBD complications can affect the lives of patients. The purpose of this study was to identify the predictive factors for these complications, including the patient’s status, cancer status, and stent type. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis conducted in a single tertiary hospital from January 2007 to July 2017. The following variables were evaluated: sex, age, body mass index, cancer type, history of pancreatitis, gallbladder stone, previous biliary stenting, precut papillotomy, stent type, contrast injection into the pancreatic duct or gallbladder, cystic duct invasion by the tumor, and occlusion of the cystic duct orifice by a metal stent. Results: Multivariate analysis showed that contrast injection into the pancreatic duct was a risk factor for pancreatitis. Patients with a history of bile drainage showed a lower risk of pancreatitis. For cholecystitis, the analysis revealed contrast injection into the gallbladder and cystic duct invasion by the tumor as important predictive factors. Metal stents showed a greater risk of post-procedure pancreatitis than plastic stents, but did not affect the incidence of cholecystitis. Conclusions: Considering that contrast injection is the most important factor for both complications, a careful approach by the physician is essential in preventing the occurrence of any complications. Further, choosing the type of stent is an important factor for patients at a risk of post-procedure pancreatitis.

We present a plasmonic-enhanced dielectrophoretic (DEP) phenomenon to improve optical DEP performance of a floating electrode optoelectronic tweezers (FEOET) device, where aqueous droplets can be effectively manipulated on a light-patterned photoconductive surface immersed in an oil medium. To offer device simplicity and cost-effectiveness, recent studies have utilized a polymer-based photoconductive material such as titanium oxide phthalocyanine (TiOPc). However, the TiOPc has much poorer photoconductivity than that of semiconductors like amorphous silicon (a-Si), significantly limiting optical DEP applications. The study herein focuses on the FEOET device for which optical DEP performance can be greatly enhanced by utilizing plasmonic nanoparticles as light scattering elements to improve light absorption of the low-quality TiOPc. Numerical simulation studies of both plasmonic light scattering and electric field enhancement were conducted to verify wide-angle scattering light rays and an approximately twofold increase in electric field gradient with the presence of nanoparticles. Similarly, a spectrophotometric study conducted on the absorption spectrum of the TiOPc has shown light absorption improvement (nearly twofold) of the TiOPc layer. Additionally, droplet dynamics study experimentally demonstrated a light-actuated droplet speed of 1.90 mm/s, a more than 11-fold improvement due to plasmonic light scattering. This plasmonic-enhanced FEOET technology can considerably improve optical DEP capability even with poor-quality photoconductive materials, thus providing low-cost, easy-fabrication solutions for various droplet-based microfluidic applications.

It has been acknowledged that stresses within a thermal barrier coating (TBC) and its durability are significantly affected by the coating interfaces. This paper presents a finite element approach for stress analysis of the plasma sprayed TBC system, using three-dimensional (3D) coating interfaces. 3D co-ordinates of the coating surfaces were measured through 3D reconstruction of scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. These co-ordinates were post processed to reconstruct finite element models for use in stress analyses. A surface profile unit cell approach with appropriate boundary conditions was applied to reduce the problem size and hence computation time. It has been shown that for an identical aspect ratio of the coating interface, interfacial out-of-plane stresses for 3D models are around twice the values predicted using 2D models. Based on predicted stress development within the systems, possible crack development and failure mechanisms of the TBC systems can be predicted. The graphite bricks of the UK carbon dioxide gas cooled nuclear reactors are subjected to neutron irradiation and radiolytic oxidation during operation which will affect thermal and mechanical material properties and may lead to structural failure. In this paper, an empirical equation is obtained and used to represent the reduction in the thermal conductivity as a result of temperature and neutron dose. A 2D finite element thermal analysis was carried out using Abaqus to obtain temperature distribution across the graphite brick. Although thermal conductivity could be reduced by up to 75% under certain conditions of dose and temperature, analysis has shown that it has no significant effect on the temperature distribution. It was found that the temperature distribution within the graphite brick is non-radial, different from the steady state temperature distribution used in the previous studies [1,2]. To investigate the significance of this non-radial temperature distribution on the failure of graphite bricks, a subsequent mechanical analysis was also carried out with the nodal temperature information obtained from the thermal analysis. To predict the formation of cracks within the brick and the subsequent propagation, a linear traction–separation cohesive model in conjunction with the extended finite element method (XFEM) is used. Compared to the analysis with steady state radial temperature distribution, the crack initiation time for the model with non-radial temperature distribution is delayed by almost one year in service, and the maximum crack length is also shorter by around 20%.
