Search

Magnetic kagome materials provide a fascinating playground for exploring the interplay of magnetism, correlation and topology. Many magnetic kagome systems have been reported including the binary FemXn (X=Sn, Ge; m:n = 3:1, 3:2, 1:1) family and the rare earth RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth) family, where their kagome flat bands are calculated to be near the Fermi level in the paramagnetic phase. While partially filling a kagome flat band is predicted to give rise to a Stoner-type ferromagnetism, experimental visualization of the magnetic splitting across the ordering temperature has not been reported for any of these systems due to the high ordering temperatures, hence leaving the nature of magnetism in kagome magnets an open question. Here, we probe the electronic structure with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in a kagome magnet thin film FeSn synthesized using molecular beam epitaxy. We identify the exchange-split kagome flat bands, whose splitting persists above the magnetic ordering temperature, indicative of a local moment picture. Such local moments in the presence of the topological flat band are consistent with the compact molecular orbitals predicted in theory. We further observe a large spin-orbital selective band renormalization in the Fe d_xy+d_(x^2-y^2 ) spin majority channel reminiscent of the orbital selective correlation effects in the iron-based superconductors. Our discovery of the coexistence of local moments with topological flat bands in a kagome system echoes similar findings in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, and provides a basis for theoretical effort towards modeling correlation effects in magnetic flat band systems.

Recently, superconductivity has been observed in twisted WSe$_2$ moir\'{e} structures (Xia et al., arXiv:2405.14784; Guo et al., arXiv:2406.03418). Its transition temperature is high, reaching a few percent of the Fermi temperature scale. Here, we advance a mechanism for superconductivity based on the notion that electronic topology enables quantum fluctuations in a suitable regime of intermediate correlations. In this regime, the Coulomb interaction requires that an active topological flat band and nearby wider bands are considered together. Compact molecular orbitals arise, which experience quantum fluctuations through topology-dictated hybridization with the other molecular orbitals. The hybridization competes with the active flat band' natural tendency towards static electronic ordering, thereby weakening the latter; we link this effect with certain salient observations by experiments. Furthermore, the competition yields a quantum critical regime where quasiparticles are lost. The corresponding quantum critical fluctuations drive superconductivity. The moir\'{e} structure of AB-stacked $\rm{MoTe_2/WSe_2}$ represents a natural platform to realize Kondo lattice models, due to the discrepancy of the bandwidth between the individual layers. Here, we study this system at the commensurate filling of $\nu_{\rm tot}=2$. Our focus is on the $1+1$ filling setting of $\nu_{\rm Mo} =\nu_{\rm W}=1$, which enables a Kondo lattice description. We find a Kondo semimetal due to the sizable intra-orbital hopping among the electrons in the $\rm{MoTe_2}$ layer. The Kondo-driven (emergent) flat band is naturally pinned to the Fermi energy. When combined with the inherent topology of the electronic structure, a topological Kondo semimetal phase ensues. We calculate the valley Hall response and, due to the breaking of inversion symmetry, also identify a spontaneous Hall effect. There is a Berry curvature dodecapole, which leads to a fourth-order spontaneous Hall effect in the perturbative regime of the electric field that is further amplified in the non-perturbative regime. As such, the system provides a tunable setting to simulate topological Kondo semimetals. Finally, we discuss the pathways that connect the physics realized here to the Weyl Kondo semimetals and their proximate phases that have been advanced in recent years in topological Kondo lattice models and materials., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Recent development on fractional Chern insulators and proximate phases call for a real space representation of isolated Chern bands. Here we propose a new method for a general construction of optimally localized Wannier functions from such Chern bands. We do so through an optimal gauge choice of the Bloch states of a Chern band with the singularity placed at any desired position in momentum space. We apply this method to construct the optimally localized Wannier functions for kagome lattice, and use it to identify channels of interactions that are favorable to the development of fractional Chern insulators. In the quest for novel quantum states driven by topology and correlation, kagome lattice materials have garnered significant interest due to their distinctive electronic band structures, featuring flat bands (FBs) arising from the quantum destructive interference of the electronic wave function. The tuning of the FBs to the chemical potential would lead to the possibility of liberating electronic instabilities that lead to emergent electronic orders. Despite extensive studies, direct evidence of FBs tuned to the chemical potential and their participation in emergent electronic orders have been lacking in bulk quantum materials. Here using a combination of Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) and Density Functional Theory (DFT), we reveal that the low-energy electronic structure of the recently discovered Cr-based kagome metal superconductor CsCr3Sb5 is dominated by a pervasive FB in close proximity to, and below the Fermi level. A comparative analysis with orbital-projected DFT and polarization dependence measurement uncovers that an orbital-selective renormalization mechanism is needed to reconcile the discrepancy with the DFT calculations, which predict the FB to appear 200 meV above the Fermi level. Furthermore, we observe the FB to shift away from the Fermi level by 20 meV in the low-temperature density wave-ordered phase, highlighting the role of the FB in the emergent electronic order. Our results reveal CsCr3Sb5 to stand out as a promising platform for further exploration into the effects of FBs near the Fermi level on kagome lattices, and their role in emergent orders in bulk quantum materials.

The nature of charge carriers in strange metals has become a topic of intense current investigation. Recent shot noise measurements in the quantum critical heavy fermion metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ revealed a suppression of the Fano factor that cannot be understood from electron-phonon scattering or strong electron correlations in a Fermi liquid, indicating loss of quasiparticles. The experiment motivates the consideration of shot noise in a variety of theoretical models in which quasiparticles may be lost. Here we study shot noise in systems with co-existing itinerant electrons and dispersive bosons, going beyond the regime where the bosons are on their own in thermal equilibrium. We construct the Boltzmann-Langevin equations for the coupled system, and show that adequate electron-boson couplings restore the Fano factor to its Fermi liquid value. Our findings point to the beyond-Landau form of quantum criticality as underlying the suppressed shot noise of strange metals in heavy fermion metals and beyond., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

A strange metal is an exotic state of correlated quantum matter; intensive efforts are ongoing to decipher its nature. Here we explore whether the quantum Fisher information (QFI), a concept from quantum metrology, can provide new insight. We use inelastic neutron scattering and quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study a Kondo destruction quantum critical point, where strange metallicity is associated with fluctuations beyond a Landau order parameter. We find that the QFI probed away from magnetic Bragg peaks, where the effect of magnetic ordering is minimized, increases strongly and without a characteristic scale as the strange metal forms with decreasing temperature, evidencing its unusual entanglement properties. Kagome metals offer a unique platform for investigating robust electron-correlation effects because of their lattice geometry, flat bands and multi-orbital nature. In the cases with active flat bands, recent theoretical studies have pointed to a rich phase diagram that contains not only electronic orders but also quantum criticality. Very recently, $\rm CsCr_3Sb_5$ has emerged as a strong candidate for exploring such new physics. Here, using effective tight-binding models obtained from ab initio calculations, we study the effects of electronic correlations and symmetries on the electronic structure of $\rm CsCr_3 Sb_5$. The effective tight-binding model and Fermi surface comprise multiple Cr-$d$ orbitals and Sb-$p$ orbitals. The introduction of Hubbard-Kanamori interactions leads to orbital-selective band renormalization dominated by the $d_{xz}$ band, concurrently producing emergent flat bands very close to the Fermi level. Our analysis sets the stage for further investigations into the electronic properties of $\rm CsCr_3Sb_5$, including electronic orders, quantum criticality and unconventional superconductivity, which promise to shed much new light into the electronic materials with frustrated lattices and bring about new connections with the correlation physics of a variety of strongly correlated systems., Comment: 6 + 6 pages, 4 + 5 figures

Weyl-Kondo semimetals are strongly correlated topological semimetals that develop through the cooperation of the Kondo effect with space group symmetries. The Kondo effect, capturing quantum fluctuations associated with strong correlations, is usually suppressed by magnetic order. Here we develop the theory of magnetic Weyl-Kondo semimetal. The key of the proposed mechanism is that the magnetic order comes from conduction $d$ electrons, such that the local $f$ moments can still fluctuate. We illustrate the extreme case where the magnetic space group symmetries prevent any spontaneous magnetization on the sites with the $f$-orbitals. In this case, topological degeneracies, including hourglass Weyl-Kondo nodal lines, appear when the magnetic space group symmetry constrains the Kondo-driven low-energy excitations; they lead to a third-order nonlinear anomalous Hall response. Based on the proposed mechanism, we explore the interplay between strong correlations and symmetries with database search leading to several candidate materials. The most prominent candidates are antiferromagnetic $\rm UNiGa$ and $\rm UNiAl$, with a third-order anomalous Hall response, as well as ferromagnetic $\rm USbTe$ and $\rm CeCoPO$, with a first-order one. Strong correlations in matter promote a landscape of ground states and associated quantum critical points. For metallic systems, there is increasing recognition that the quantum criticality goes beyond the standard Landau framework and, thus, novel means are needed to characterize the quantum critical fluid. Here we do so by studying the entanglement properties near a quantum critical point of a strongly correlated metal. We calculate the quantum Fisher information of an Anderson/Kondo lattice model across its Kondo destruction quantum critical point. The quantum Fisher information of the spin degree of freedom peaks at the quantum critical point and indicates a strongly entangled ground state. Our results are supported by the quantum Fisher information extracted from inelastic neutron scattering measurements in quantum critical heavy fermion metals. Our work opens a new avenue to advance the understanding of metallic quantum criticality in a broad range of strongly correlated systems, and points to a new regime of quantum matter to realize amplified entanglement., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures

How electronic topology develops in strongly correlated systems represents a fundamental challenge in the field of quantum materials. Recent studies have advanced the characterization and diagnosis of topology in Mott insulators whose underlying electronic structure is topologically nontrivial, through ``Green's function zeros". However, their counterparts in metallic systems have yet to be explored. Here, we address this problem in an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP), which is of extensive interest to a variety of strongly correlated systems with a short-range Coulomb repulsion. We demonstrate symmetry protected crossing of the zeros in an OSMP. Utilizing the concept of Green's function Berry curvature, we show that the zero crossing has a quantized Berry flux. The resulting notion of Dirac zeros provides a window into the largely hidden landscape of topological zeros in strongly correlated metallic systems and, moreover, opens up a means to diagnose strongly correlated topology in new materials classes., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The unusual quantum-disordered magnetic ground state intertwined with superconductivity and electronic nematicity in FeSe has been a research focus in iron-based superconductors. However, the intrinsic spin excitations across the entire Brillouin zone in detwinned FeSe, which forms the basis for a microscopic understanding of the magnetic state and superconductivity, remain to be determined. Here, we use inelastic neutron scattering to map out the spin excitations of FeSe dewtinned with a uniaxial-strain device. We find that the stripe spin excitations (Q=(1, 0)/(0, 1)) exhibit the $C_2$ symmetry up to $E\approx120$ meV, while the N{\'e}el spin excitations (Q=(1, 1)) retain their $C_4$ symmetry in the nematic state. The temperature dependence of the difference in the spin excitations at Q=(1, 0) and (0, 1) for temperatures above the structural phase transition unambiguously shows the establishment of the nematic quantum disordered state. The similarity of the N\'eel excitations in FeSe and NaFeAs suggests that the N\'eel excitations are driven by the enhanced electron correlations in the $3d_{xy}$ orbital. By determining the key features of the stripe excitations and fitting their dispersions using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with biquadratic interaction ($J_1$-$K$-$J_2$), we establish a spin-interaction phase diagram and conclude that FeSe is close to a crossover region between the antiferroquadrupolar, N\'eel, and stripe ordering regimes. The results provide an experimental basis for establishing a microscopic theoretical model to describe the origin and intertwining of the emergent orders in iron-based superconductors., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Flat band materials such as the kagome metals or moir\'e superlattice systems are of intense current interest. Flat bands can result from the electron motion on numerous (special) lattices and usually exhibit topological properties. Their reduced bandwidth proportionally enhances the effect of Coulomb interaction, even when the absolute magnitude of the latter is relatively small. Seemingly unrelated to these cases is the large family of strongly correlated electron systems, which includes the heavy fermion compounds, cuprate and pnictide superconductors. In addition to itinerant electrons from large, strongly overlapping orbitals, they frequently contain electrons from more localized orbitals, which are subject to a large Coulomb interaction. The question then arises as to what commonality in the physical properties and microscopic physics, if any, exists between the two broad categories of materials? A rapidly increasing body of strikingly similar phenomena across the different platforms -- from electronic localization-delocalization transitions to strange metal behavior and unconventional superconductivity -- suggests that similar underlying principles could be at play. Indeed, it has recently been suggested that flat band physics can be understood in terms of Kondo physics. Inversely, the concept of electronic topology from lattice symmetry, which is fundamental in flat band systems, is enriching the field of strongly correlated electron systems where correlation-driven topological phases are increasingly being investigated. The intersection of electronic topology and strong correlations offers a rich platform to discover exotic quantum phases of matter and unusual materials. An overarching challenge that impedes the discovery is how to diagnose strongly correlated electronic topology. Here, we develop a framework to address this outstanding question, and illustrate its power in the setting of electronic topology in Mott insulators. Based on single-particle Green's functions, the concept of a Green's function Berry curvature -- which is frequency dependent -- is introduced. We apply this notion in a system that contains symmetry-protected nodes in its noninteracting bandstructure; strong correlations drive the system into a Mott insulating state, creating contours in frequency-momentum space where the Green's function vanishes. The Green's function Berry flux of such zeros is found to be quantized, and is as such direct probe of the system's topology. Electronic correlation effects are manifested in quantum materials when either the onsite Coulomb repulsion is large or the electron kinetic energy is small. The former is the dominant effect in the cuprate superconductors or heavy fermion systems while the latter in twisted bilayer graphene or geometrically frustrated metals. However, the simultaneous cooperation of both effects in the same quantum material--the design principle to produce a correlated topological flat bands pinned at the Fermi level--remains rare. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report the observation of a flat band at the Fermi level in a 3$d$ pyrochlore metal CuV$_2$S$_4$. From a combination of first-principles calculations and slave-spin calculations, we understand the origin of this band to be a destructive quantum-interference effect associated with the V pyrochlore sublattice and further renormalization to the Fermi level by electron interactions in the partially filled V $t_{2g}$ orbitals. As a result, we find transport behavior that indicates a deviation from Fermi-liquid behavior as well as a large Sommerfeld coefficient. Moir\'e structures, along with line-graph-based $d$-electron systems, represent a setting to realize flat bands. One form of the associated strong correlation physics is the Kondo effect. Here, we address the recently observed Kondo-driven heavy fermion state and its destruction in AB-stacked hetero-bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides, which can be controlled by the gate voltages. By studying an effective interacting Hamiltonian using the slave spin approach, we obtained a phase diagram with the total filling factor and the displacement field strength as the tunable parameters. In an extended range of the tunable displacement field, our numerical results show that the relative filling of the $d$ orbital, which is associated with the highest moir\'e band from the $\rm MoTe_2$ layer, is enforced to be $\nu_d \approx 1$ by the interaction. This agrees with the experimental observation. We also argue that the observed high coherence temperature scale could be explained by the non-negligible bandwidth of the $d$ orbital. There is extensive current interest about electronic topology in correlated settings. In strongly correlated systems, contours of Green's function zeros may develop in frequency-momentum space, and their role in correlated topology has increasingly been recognized. However, whether and how the zeros contribute to electronic properties is a matter of uncertainty. Here we address the issue in an exactly solvable model for Mott insulator. We show that the Green's function zeros contribute to several physically measurable correlation functions, in a way that does not run into inconsistencies. In particular, the physical properties remain robust to chemical potential variations up to the Mott gap as it should be based on general considerations. Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure, we discuss the basic ingredients of a model that captures its microscopic physics under pressure tuning. We anchor our description in terms of the spectroscopic evidence of strong correlations in this system. In a bilayer Hubbard model including the Ni $3d$ $x^2-y^2$ and $z^2$ orbitals, we show the ground state of the model crosses over from a low-spin $S=1/2$ state to a high-spin $S=3/2$ state. In the high-spin state, the two $x^2-y^2$ and the bonding $z^2$ orbitals are all close to half-filling, which promotes a strong orbital selectivity in a broad crossover regime of the phase diagram pertinent to the system. Based on these results, we construct an effective multiorbital $t$-$J$ model to describe the superconductivity of the system, and find the leading pairing channel to be an intraorbital spin singlet with a competition between the extended $s$-wave and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetries. Strange metals arise in a variety of platforms for strongly correlated electrons, ranging from the cuprates, heavy fermions to flat band systems. Motivated by recent experiments in kagome metals, we study a Hubbard model on a kagome lattice whose noninteracting limit contains flat bands. A Kondo lattice description is constructed, in which the degrees of freedom are exponentially localized molecular orbitals. We identify an orbital-selective Mott transition through an extended dynamical mean field theory of the effective model. The transition describes a quantum critical point at which quasiparticles are lost and strange metallicity emerges. Our theoretical work opens up a new route for realizing beyond-Landau quantum criticality and emergent quantum phases that it nucleates., Comment: 38 pages, 11 figures

We use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Fe-L$_3$ edge to study the spin excitations of uniaxial-strained and unstrained FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ ($0\leq x\leq0.21$) samples. The measurements on unstrained samples reveal dispersive spin excitations in all doping levels, which show only minor doping dependence in energy dispersion, lifetime, and intensity, indicating that high-energy spin excitations are only marginally affected by sulfur doping. RIXS measurements on uniaxial-strained samples reveal that the high-energy spin-excitation anisotropy observed previously in FeSe is also present in the doping range $0< x\leq0.21$ of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$. The spin-excitation anisotropy persists to a high temperature up to $T>200$ K in $x=0.18$ and reaches a maximum around the nematic quantum critical doping ($x_c\approx0.17$). Since the spin-excitation anisotropy directly reflects the existence of nematic spin correlations, our results indicate that high-energy nematic spin correlations pervade the regime of nematicity in the phase diagram and are enhanced by the nematic quantum criticality. The ability to reversibly toggle between two distinct states in a non-volatile method is important for information storage applications. Such devices have been realized for phase-change materials, which utilizes local heating methods to toggle between a crystalline and an amorphous state with distinct electrical properties. To expand such kind of switching between two topologically distinct phases requires non-volatile switching between two crystalline phases with distinct symmetries. Here we report the observation of reversible and non-volatile switching between two stable and closely-related crystal structures with remarkably distinct electronic structures in the near room temperature van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_{5-\delta}$GeTe$_2$. From a combination of characterization techniques we show that the switching is enabled by the ordering and disordering of an Fe site vacancy that results in distinct crystalline symmetries of the two phases that can be controlled by a thermal annealing and quenching method. Furthermore, from symmetry analysis as well as first principle calculations, we provide understanding of the key distinction in the observed electronic structures of the two phases: topological nodal lines compatible with the preserved global inversion symmetry in the site-disordered phase, and flat bands resulting from quantum destructive interference on a bipartite crystaline lattice formed by the presence of the site order as well as the lifting of the topological degeneracy due to the broken inversion symmetry in the site-ordered phase. Our work not only reveals a rich variety of quantum phases emergent in the metallic van der Waals ferromagnets due to the presence of site ordering, but also demonstrates the potential of these highly tunable two-dimensional magnets for memory and spintronics applications.

Strong correlations lead to emergent excitations at low energies. When combined with symmetry constraints, they may produce topological electronic states near the Fermi energy. Within this general framework, here we address the topological features in iron-based superconductors. We examine the effects of orbital-selective correlations on the band inversion in the iron chalcogenide FeSe$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ near its doping of optimal superconductivity, within a multiorbital model and using a $U(1)$ slave spin theory. The orbital selectivity of the quasiparticle spectral weight, along with its counterpart of the energy level renormalization, leads to a band inversion and Dirac node formation pinned to the immediate vicinity of the Fermi energy. Our work demonstrates both the naturalness and robustness of the topological properties in FeSe$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$, and uncovers a new setting in which strong correlations and space-group symmetry cooperate in generating strongly correlated electronic topology., Comment: 7+3 pages, 5+4 figures

Dirac materials have been proposed as a new class of electron-based detectors for light dark-matter (DM) scattering or absorption, with predicted sensitivities far exceeding superconductors and superfluid helium. The superiority of Dirac materials originates from a significantly reduced in-medium dielectric response winning over the suppression of DM scattering owing to the limited phase space at the point-like Fermi surface. Here we propose a new route to enhance significantly the DM detection efficiency via strongly correlated topological semimetals. Emergent phases often appear when the electronic kinetic energy is comparable to the Coulomb interactions. One approach to seek material systems as hosts of such emergent phases is to realize localization of electronic wavefunctions due to the geometric frustration inherent in the crystal structure, resulting in flat electronic bands. Recently, such efforts have found a wide range of exotic phases in the two-dimensional kagome lattice, including magnetic order, time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order, nematicity, and superconductivity. However, the interlayer coupling of the kagome layers disrupts the destructive interference needed to completely quench the kinetic energy. Here we demonstrate that an interwoven kagome network-a pyrochlore lattice-can host a three dimensional (3D) localization of electron wavefunctions. Meanwhile, the nonsymmorphic symmetry of the pyrochlore lattice guarantees all band crossings at the Brillouin zone X point to be 3D gapless Dirac points, which was predicted theoretically but never yet observed experimentally. Through a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, fundamental lattice model and density functional theory calculations, we investigate the novel electronic structure of a Laves phase superconductor with a pyrochlore sublattice, CeRu$_2$. We observe flat bands originating from both the Ce 4$f$ orbitals as well as from the 3D destructive interference of the Ru 4$d$ orbitals. We further observe the nonsymmorphic symmetry-protected 3D gapless Dirac cones at the X point. The heavy-fermion metal CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ was the first discovered unconventional, non-phonon-mediated superconductor, and for a long time was believed to exhibit single-band $d$-wave superconductivity, as inferred from various measurements hinting at a nodal gap structure. More recently however, measurements using a range of techniques at very low temperatures ($T \lessapprox 0.1$ K) provided evidence for a fully-gapped superconducting order parameter. In this Colloquium, after a brief historical overview we survey the apparently conflicting results of numerous experimental studies on this compound. We then address the different theoretical scenarios which have been applied to understand the particular gap structure, including both isotropic (sign-preserving) and anisotropic two-band $s$-wave superconductivity, as well as an effective two-band $d$-wave model, where the latter can explain the currently available experimental data on CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. The lessons from CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ are expected to help uncover the Cooper-pair states in other unconventional, fully-gapped superconductors with strongly correlated carriers, and in particular highlight the rich variety of such states enabled by orbital degrees of freedom., Comment: 33 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables

Lattice symmetries are central to the characterization of electronic topology. Recently, it was shown that Green's function eigenvectors form a representation of the space group. This formulation has allowed the identification of gapless topological states even when quasiparticles are absent. Here we demonstrate the profundity of the framework in the extreme case, when interactions lead to a Mott insulator, through a solvable model with long-range interactions. We find that both Mott poles and zeros are subject to the symmetry constraints, and relate the symmetry-enforced spectral crossings to degeneracies of the original non-interacting eigenstates. Flat electronic bands are expected to show proportionally enhanced electron correlations, which may generate a plethora of novel quantum phases and unusual low-energy excitations. They are increasingly being pursued in $d$-electron-based systems with crystalline lattices that feature destructive electronic interference, where they are often topological. Such flat bands, though, are generically located far away from the Fermi energy, which limits their capacity to partake in the low-energy physics. Here we show that electron correlations produce emergent flat bands that are pinned to the Fermi energy. We demonstrate this effect within a Hubbard model, in the regime described by Wannier orbitals where an effective Kondo description arises through orbital-selective Mott correlations. Moreover, the correlation effect cooperates with symmetry constraints to produce a topological Kondo semimetal. Our results motivate a novel design principle for Weyl Kondo semimetals in a new setting, viz. $d$-electron-based materials on suitable crystal lattices, and uncover interconnections among seemingly disparate systems that may inspire fresh understandings and realizations of correlated topological effects in quantum materials and beyond., Comment: To appear in Nature Communications; submitted version of the manuscript; 33 pages, 4 figures main text + 7 figures supplementary information

Shot noise measures out-of-equilibrium current fluctuations and is a powerful tool to probe the nature of current-carrying excitations in quantum systems. Recent shot noise measurements in the heavy fermion strange metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ exhibit a strong suppression of the Fano factor ($F$) -- the ratio of the current noise to the average current in the DC limit. This system is representative of metals in which electron correlations are extremely strong. Here we carry out the first theoretical study on the shot noise of diffusive metals in the regime of strong correlations. A Boltzmann-Langevin equation formulation is constructed in a quasiparticle description in the presence of strong correlations. We find that $F = \sqrt{ 3}/{4}$ in such a correlation regime. Thus, we establish the aforementioned Fano factor as universal to Fermi liquids, and show that the Fano factor suppression observed in experiments on YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ necessitates a loss of the quasiparticles. An overarching question in strongly correlated electron systems is how the landscape of quantum phases emerges from electron correlations. The method of extended dynamical mean field theory (EDMFT) has been developed for clean lattice models of the correlated electrons. For such models, not only onsite Hubbard-like interactions are important, but so are intersite interactions. Importantly, the EDMFT method treats the interplay between the onsite and intersite interactions dynamically. It was initially formulated for models of the two-band Anderson-lattice type with intersite interactions, as well as for the one-band Hubbard type with intersite Heisenberg-like terms that are often called Hubbard-Heisenberg models. In the case of Kondo lattice models, the EDMFT method incorporates a dynamical competition between the local Kondo and intersite Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions. In these models, the EDMFT-based analyses led to the notion of Kondo destruction, which has played a central role in the understanding of quantum critical heavy fermion metals. In this article, we summarize the EDMFT method, and survey its applications, particularly for Kondo/Anderson lattice models. We also discuss the prospect for further developing the EDMFT method, as well as for applying it to address the correlation physics in a variety of new settings. Among the latter are the orbital-selective Mott physics that arises both in iron-based superconductors and in frustrated bulk systems with topological flat bands., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

Strange metals develop near quantum critical points (QCPs) in a variety of strongly correlated systems. Some of the important issues include how the quantum critical state loses quasiparticles, how it drives superconductivity, and to what extent the strange-metal physics in different classes of correlated systems is interconnected. In this review, we confront some of these issues from the vantage point of heavy fermion metals. We will describe the notion of Kondo destruction and how it leads to a transformation of the Fermi surface from ``large" to ``small" when the system is tuned across the QCP, a loss of quasiparticles everywhere on the Fermi surface when it is perched at the QCP, and a dynamical Planckian scaling in various physical properties including charge responses. Flat bands amplify correlation effects and are of extensive current interest. They provide a platform to explore both topology in correlated settings and correlation physics enriched by topology. Recent experiments in correlated kagome metals have found evidence for strange-metal behavior. A major theoretical challenge is to study the effect of local Coulomb repulsion when the band topology obstructs a real-space description. In a variant to the kagome lattice, we identify an orbital-selective Mott transition for the first time in any system of coupled topological flat and wide bands. This was made possible by the construction of exponentially localized and Kramers-doublet Wannier functions, which in turn leads to an effective Kondo lattice description. Our findings show how quasiparticles are formed in such coupled topological flat-wide band systems and, equally important, how they are destroyed. Our work provides a conceptual framework for the understanding of the existing and emerging strange-metal properties in kagome metals and beyond., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures. We present the results of muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and neutron scattering on the Ce-based quasikagome lattice CeRh$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$Sn ($x=0.1$ to 0.75). Our ZF-$\mu$SR results reveal the absence of static long-range magnetic order down to 0.05~K in $x = 0.1$ single crystals. The weak temperature-dependent plateaus of the dynamic spin fluctuations below 0.2~K in ZF-$\mu$SR together with its longitudinal-field (LF) dependence between 0 and 3~kG indicate the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at $T$ = 0.05~K without static magnetic order. On the other hand, $C_{\text{4f}}$/$T$ increases as --log $T$ on cooling below 0.9~K, passes through a broad maximum at 0.13~K and slightly decreases on further cooling. The ac-susceptibility also exhibits a frequency independent broad peak at 0.16~K, which is prominent with an applied field $H$ along $c$-direction. We, therefore, argue that such a behavior for $x=0.1$ (namely, a plateau in spin relaxation rate ($\lambda$) below 0.2~K and a linear $T$ dependence in $C_{\text{4f}}$ below 0.13~K) can be attributed to a metallic spin-liquid (SL) ground state near the quantum critical point in the frustrated Kondo lattice. The LF-$\mu$SR study suggests that the out of kagome plane spin fluctuations are responsible for the SL behavior. Low energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) of $x$ = 0.1 reveals gapless magnetic excitations, which are also supported by the behavior of $C_{\text{4f}}$ proportional to $T^{1.1}$ down to 0.06~K., Comment: 19 pages and 9 figures

Quantum criticality that goes beyond the Landau framework of order-parameter fluctuations is playing a central role in elucidating the behavior of strange metals. A prominent case appears in Kondo lattice systems, which have been extensively analysed in terms of an effective Bose-Fermi Kondo model. Here, a spin is simultaneously coupled to conduction electron bands and gapless vector bosons that represent magnetic fluctuations. The Bose-Fermi Kondo model features interacting fixed points of Kondo destruction with such properties as dynamical Planckian ($\hbar \omega / k_{\rm B} T$) scaling and loss of quasiparticles. Here we carry out a renormalization-group analysis of the model with spin isotropy and identify pair-wise annihilations of the fixed points as the spectrum of the bosonic bath evolves. Our analysis not only provides an essentially complete understanding of the previous numerical results of an SU(2)-symmetric model, but also reveals a surprising feature of sequential fixed-point annihilation. Our results lay the foundation for the understanding of quantum criticality in spin-isotropic heavy-fermion metals as well as in doped Mott-Hubbard systems., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Metallic quantum criticality is a central theme in a variety of strongly correlated systems. Recent experiments have raised the fundamental question of how the charge response can be singular in cases where the Landau framework of quantum criticality allows singularity only in the spin channel. Motivated by this emerging issue, we study the particle-hole-asymmetric regime of a Bose-Fermi Anderson model with power-law forms for both the bosonic bath spectrum and the fermionic band density of states. We realize a particle-hole-asymmetric quantum-critical state where quasiparticles are lost due to a critical destruction of Kondo screening, and demonstrate a dynamical Planckian scaling of the charge response. Implications for a new regime of heavy-fermion quantum criticality and for Mott-Hubbard systems are discussed., Comment: 6+3 pages, 4+3 figures. Strange-metal behavior has been observed in materials ranging from high-temperature superconductors to heavy fermion metals. In conventional metals, current is carried by quasiparticles; although it has been suggested that quasiparticles are absent in strange metals, direct experimental evidence is lacking. We measured shot noise to probe the granularity of the current-carrying excitations in nanowires of the heavy fermion strange metal YbRh2Si2. When compared with conventional metals, shot noise in these nanowires is strongly suppressed. This suppression cannot be attributed to either electron-phonon or electron-electron interactions in a Fermi liquid, which suggests that the current is not carried by well-defined quasiparticles in the strange-metal regime that we probed. Strange metal behavior appears across a variety of condensed matter settings and beyond, and achieving a universal understanding is an exciting prospect. The beyond-Landau quantum criticality of Kondo destruction has had considerable success in describing the behavior of strange metal heavy fermion compounds, and there is some evidence that the associated partial localization-delocalization nature can be generalized to diverse materials classes. Other potential overarching principles at play are also being explored. An intriguing proposal is that Planckian scattering, with a rate of $k_{\rm B}T/\hbar$, leads to the linear temperature dependence of the (dc) electrical resistivity, which is a hallmark of strange metal behavior. Here we extend a previously introduced analysis scheme based on the Drude description of the dc resistivity to optical conductivity data. When they are well described by a simple (ac) Drude model, the scattering rate can be directly extracted. This avoids the need to determine the ratio of charge carrier concentration to effective mass, which has complicated previous analyses based on the dc resistivity. However, we point out that strange metals typically exhibit strong deviations from Drude behavior, as exemplified by the ``extreme'' strange metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. This calls for alternative approaches, and we point to the power of strange metal dynamical (energy-over-temperature) scaling analyses for the inelastic part of the optical conductivity. Symmetry breaking beyond a global U(1) phase is the key signature of unconventional superconductors. As prototypical strongly correlated materials, heavy-fermion metals provide ideal platforms for realizing unconventional superconductivity. In this article, we review heavy-fermion superconductivity, with a focus on those materials with multiple superconducting phases. In this context, we highlight the role of orbital-selective (matrix) pairing functions, which are defined as matrices in the space of effective orbital degrees of freedom such as electronic orbitals and sublattices as well as equivalent descriptions in terms of intra- and inter-band pairing components in the band basis. The role of quantum criticality and the associated strange-metal physics in the development of unconventional superconductivity is emphasized throughout. We discuss in some detail the recent experimental observations and theoretical perspectives in the illustrative cases of UTe2, CeRh2As2, and CeCu2Si2, where applied magnetic fields or pressure induce a variety of superconducting phases. Studies on the iron-based superconductors and related strongly correlated systems have focused attention on bad-metal normal state in proximity to antiferromagnetic order. An orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) has been extensively discussed as anchoring the orbital-selective correlation phenomena in this regime. Motivated by recent experiments, we advance the notion that an OSMP is synonymous to correlation-driven dehybridization. This idea is developed in terms of a competition between inter-orbital hopping and dynamical spatial spin correlations. Within effective models that arise from extended dynamical mean-field theory (EDMFT), and using a combination of continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo and analytical methods, we show how the OSMP emerges as a stable dehybridization fixed point. Concomitantly, the stability of the OSMP is demonstrated. Connections of this mechanism with partial localization-delocalization transition in other strongly correlated metals are discussed., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Charge order in kagome metals is of extensive current interest. Recently, a charge density wave was discovered in the magnetic binary kagome metal FeGe. In analogy to its predecessor, the non-magnetic $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$=K, Cs, Rb), the in-plane ordering occurs at the $M$ point. In contrast, however, the system manifestly shows effects of substantial correlations. Here we identify the topological bands crossing the Fermi energy (E$_F$) in FeGe and characterize the correlation-induced renormalization of these bands. We then derive a charge order from an effective model comprising topological kagome `flat' bands in the presence of a magnetic order. We demonstrate edge states as well as excess out-of-plane magnetic moment associated with the charge order; both are fingerprints of non-trivial band topology and consistent with recent experimental observations. Electronic correlation is of fundamental importance to high temperature superconductivity. While the low energy electronic states in cuprates are dominantly affected by correlation effects across the phase diagram, observation of correlation-driven changes in fermiology amongst the iron-based superconductors remains rare. Here we present experimental evidence for a correlation-driven reconstruction of the Fermi surface tuned independently by two orthogonal axes of temperature and Se/Te ratio in the iron chalcogenide family FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$. We demonstrate that this reconstruction is driven by the de-hybridization of a strongly renormalized $d_{xy}$ orbital with the remaining itinerant iron 3$d$ orbitals in the emergence of an orbital-selective Mott phase. Our observations are further supported by our theoretical calculations to be salient spectroscopic signatures of such a non-thermal evolution from a strongly correlated metallic phase into an orbital-selective Mott phase in $d_{xy}$ as Se concentration is reduced., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, accepted version to appear in Communications Physics. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2010.13913

The heavy-fermion system $\mathrm{UTe_2}$ is a candidate for spin-triplet superconductivity, which is of considerable interest to quantum engineering. Among the outstanding issues is the nature of the pairing state. A recent surprising discovery is the observation of a resonance in the spin excitation spectrum at an antiferromagnetic wavevector [C. Duan {\it et al.}, Nature \textbf{600}, 636 (2021)], which stands in apparent contrast to the ferromagnetic nature of the interactions expected in this system. We show how the puzzle can be resolved by a multiorbital spin-triplet pairing constructed from local degrees of freedom. Because it does not commute with the kinetic part of the Hamiltonian, the pairing contains both intra- and inter-band terms in the band basis. We demonstrate that the intraband pairing component naturally yields a spin resonance at the antiferromagnetic wavevector. Our work illustrates how orbital degrees of freedom can enrich the nature and properties of spin-triplet superconductivity of strongly-correlated quantum materials., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

There has been considerable recent progress in identifying candidate materials for the transverse-field Ising chain (TFIC), a paradigmatic model for quantum criticality. Here, we study the local spin dynamical structure factor of different spin components in the quantum disordered region of the TFIC. We show that the low-frequency local dynamics of the spins in the Ising- and transverse-field directions have strikingly distinctive temperature dependencies. This leads to the thermal-activation gap for the secular term of the NMR $1/T_2^{\prime}$ relaxation rate to be half of that for the $1/T_1$ relaxation rate. Our findings reveal a new surprise in the nonzero-temperature dynamics of the venerable TFIC model and uncover a means to evince the material realization of the TFIC universality., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures
