It incorporates intervertebral foraminotomy, open surgery, and other lumboendoscopic techniques with a wide observation field, free space, and compatibility with various spinal surgical techniques and instruments. This study investigated the clinical efficacy of minimally invasive posterior cervical nucleus pulposus removal for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) by OSE-Keyhole technique.Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study of 63 patients treated with OSE keyhole treatment for CSR between May 2021 and September 2023 at Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University (Qingdao, China), and Second Hospital of Shandong University, respectively. Clinical outcomes included patients’ preoperative and postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) - arm and neck, Japanese Orthopaedic Association Assessment Treatment Score (JOA) - cervical spine, which were collected at baseline, two days postoperatively, one month postoperatively, and three months postoperatively after the last follow-up visit for evaluation, and perioperative indicators, including intraoperative bleeding, length of hospital stay, postoperative complications, and reoperations, which were also collected.Results: Statistical analyses were performed for the baseline data and follow-up results of 63 patients. Compared to the preoperative baseline values, the follow-up results two days, one month and three months after surgery showed significant improvements in vas-arm, neck and JOA scores in the operated patients (P< 0.05) as well as a reduction in all perioperative-related indices.Conclusion: In the treatment of cervical pain and disability due to radiculopathy, OSE keyhole removal of the posterior cervical nucleus pulposus is a better clinical option as it is less invasive and recovers better postoperatively.Keywords: nerve root type cervical spondylosis, unilateral cervical disc herniation, posterior cervical laminectomy, single-channel endoscopy

5. NGA-Sub ground motion database

Abstract

This paper summarizes a ground-motion database developed for the NGA-Sub Project. The database consists of two- and three-component ground-motion recordings from selected earthquakes in subduction zones. The database also includes the supporting data such as source, path, and site metadata. The earthquakes are located in Japan, Taiwan, the Pacific Northwest region of North America, Alaska, Mexico, Central and South America, and New Zealand. The events in the database are classified as interface, intraslab, or outer-rise, and have magnitudes ranging from 4 to 9. The database includes more than 71,000 three-component recordings, most of which are from digital accelerograms. The database includes PGA, PGV, pseudo-spectral acceleration for eleven damping values between 0.5% and 30%, Fourier amplitude spectra for frequencies from 0.1 to 100 Hz, and significant-shaking durations based on Arias Intensity. These data are analyzed in the project to model various ground-motion properties.

Various concentrations of PTX were added to the optimal formulation of CU-LNP to generate CU-PTX-LNP and the nanoplatform characterized via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), zeta potential, polydispersity index (PDI), and size analyses. The cumulative release, stability, and cytotoxicity of CU-PTX-LNP in LO2, HepG2, and SMMC-7221 cells were assessed in vitro, followed by safety investigation and pharmacokinetic studies in vivo. The anti-tumor activity of CU-PTX-LNP was also evaluated using nude mice.Results: CU-PTX-LNP formulations containing CU:PTX at a range of proportions (2:1– 80:1; w/w) appeared as uniformly dispersed nanosized spherical particles with high entrapment efficiency (EE> 90%), sustained release and long-lasting stability. Data from in vitro cytotoxicity assays showed a decrease in the IC50 value of PTX of CU-PTX-LNP (by 5.47– 332.7 times in HepG2 and 4.29– 143.21 times in SMMC-7221 cells) compared to free PTX. In vivo, CU-PTX-LNP displayed excellent biosafety, significant anti-tumor benefits and enhanced pharmacokinetic behavior with longer mean residence time (MRT(0-t); CU: 4.31-fold, PTX: 4.61-fold) and half-life (t1/2z; CU: 1.83-fold, PTX: 2.28-fold) relative to free drugs.Conclusion: The newly designed CU-PTX-LNP platform may serve as a viable technological support system for the successful production of CU-PTX composite preparations.Keywords: curcumin, paclitaxel, lipid nano platform, synergistic effect

7. Mesoscopic limit cycles in coupled nanolasers

Abstract

Two coupled semiconductor nanolasers exhibit a mode switching transition, theoretically characterized by limit cycle $-$or mode-beating$-$ oscillations. Their decay rate is vanishingly small in the thermodynamic limit, i.e. when the spontaneous emission noise $\beta$-factor tends to zero. We provide experimental evidence of mesoscopic limit cycles $-$with $\sim 10^3$ intracavity photons$-$ through photon statistics measurements. We first show that the order parameter quantifying the limit cycle amplitude can be reconstructed from the mode intensity statistics. As a main result we observe a maximum of the averaged amplitude at the mode switching, accounting for limit cycle oscillations. We finally relate this maximum to a dip of mode cross-correlations, reaching a minimum of $g_{ij}^{(2)}=2/3$, which we show to be a mesoscopic limit. Coupled nanolasers are thus an appealing testbed for the investigation of spontaneous breaking of time-translation symmetry in presence of strong quantum fluctuations.

Previous studies have demonstrated that long non-coding ribonucleic acid (lncRNA) is an important regulator of pain. In this study, we aimed to analyze lncRNA expression in the whole transcriptome of trigeminal ganglia (TG) and spinal trigeminal nucleus caudalis (Sp5C) in a chronic inflammatory TMJ pain mouse model.Methods: Chronic inflammatory TMJ pain was induced by intra-TMJ injection of complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA). Mouse TG and Sp5C tissues were harvested on day 4 after CFA injection. The lncRNA expression patterns in the whole transcriptome of TG and Sp5C were profiled with RNA sequencing.Results: We observed that 38 lncRNAs and 849 mRNAs were differentially expressed after CFA treatment. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis further revealed relationships among those differentially expressed lncRNAs and mRNAs and their potential functions. Specific categories of biological process, cellular processes, and molecular function of the differentially expressed transcripts were ascertained.Conclusion: Our results suggest that lncRNA expression in the whole transcriptome of trigeminal nociceptive system could contribute to the molecular mechanisms that underlie chronic inflammatory TMJ pain.Keywords: temporomandibular joint pain, lncRNAs, RNA sequencing, trigeminal ganglia, spinal trigeminal nucleus caudalis

10. The correlation of co-located hydrogen masers

Abstract

The correlation of co-located hydrogen masers (H-masers) is difficult to measure because their common-mode noise induced by the environment will be cancelled out during the comparison measurement. With the development of fibre-based high-precision time and frequency transfer technique, the correlation of co-located hydrogen masers can be directly measured with the help of remote H-masers. Recently, a fiber-based frequency synchronization network was constructed in the Beijing region by connecting 5 H-masers from 4 institutions. The correlation coefficient of atomic clocks is defined and the correlation between two co-located H-masers is measured using both experimental and simulative methods. The results show that the correlation is not prominent until the averaging time is larger than $\sim10^3$s; then, the coefficient grows rapidly for averaging times ranging from $\sim10^3$s to $\sim10^5$s and decreases beyond $\sim10^5$s up to 5 days.

This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of visceral obesity-related indices for MetS screening among three major ethnic groups living in remote rural areas of Xinjiang.Methods: Based on multistage stratified cluster random sampling method, 3,192 Uyghurs, 3,054 Kazakhs, and 3,658 Hans were recruited from Xinjiang, China. The Joint Interim Statement (JIS) criteria were used to define MetS. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), area under the ROC curve (AUC), and predictive value of each visceral obesity-related index were used to evaluate the predictive ability of MetS.Results: After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the lipid accumulation product (LAP), Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were significantly correlated with MetS for each ethnic group, and the odds ratios (ORs) for MetS increased across quartiles. LAP was best able to identify MetS status in Kazakhs (AUC=0.853) and Uyghurs (AUC=0.851), with optimal cut-offs being 36.3 and 28.2, respectively. Both LAP (AUC=0.798) and CVAI (AUC=0.791) most accurately identified MetS status in Hans, with the optimal cut-offs being 27.3 and 85.0, respectively. Moreover, the AUC of the combination of these visceral obesity-related indices is higher for each ethnic group. However, compared with LAP, the improved value of combined screening was not significant.Conclusion: LAP had the best discriminative capability for the screening of MetS among Kazakhs, Uyghurs, and Hans. The screening ability of CVAI for MetS was similar to that of LAP in Hans. 15. Turbulence simulations with BOUT++ by using SOLPS grids for SOLPS/BOUT++ coupling.

Abstract

The coupling of transport code SOLPS with the turbulence code BOUT++ was reported in Reference [D. R. Zhang et al., Phys. Plasmas 26, 012508 (2019)], while the grids of SOLPS and BOUT++ are not completely consistent with each other, especially in the divertor region. In the present work, a method of replacing the grids of BOUT++ with the grids of SOLPS is proposed to make the simulation region fully consistent with each other for the SOLPS/BOUT++ coupling. A SOLPS grid file is generated with an MHD equilibrium and used in BOUT++ code to simulate the profiles of plasma density, ion temperature, and electron temperature with the six‐field two‐fluid model. The profiles of the main plasma parameters simulated with the SOLPS grids are similar with the profiles simulated with the BOUT++ grids at the midplane, while the profiles are deformed compared with the profiles simulated with the BOUT++ grids at the outer divertor target because of the differences of the distributions of SOLPS grids and BOUT++ grids in the divertor region. The radial particle transport coefficient and heat transport coefficients are also calculated by using the BOUT++ code with the two grids, and the comparisons of the radial particle transport coefficient and heat transport coefficients simulated with the two grids at the midplane and outer divertor target plate are discussed. Identifying the molecular determinants of the anti-HCC effect of celastrol is still challenging. In this study, we undertook to associate circular RNAs (circRNAs) with the anti-HCC molecular determinants of celastrol.Methods: Cell colony formation, proliferation, migration, invasion and apoptosis were determined using the colony formation, 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTS), transwell and flow cytometry assays, respectively. The levels of circRNA slit guidance ligand 3 (circ_SLIT3), miR-223-3p and C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) were gauged by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot. Ribonuclease R (RNase R) and actinomycin D assays were performed to assess the stability of circ_SLIT3. Targeted relationships among circ_SLIT3, miR-223-3p and CXCR4 were confirmed by the dual-luciferase reporter assay. In vivo assays were performed to detect the roles of celastrol and circ_SLIT3 on tumor growth in vivo.Results: Celastrol repressed HCC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and enhanced apoptosis in vitro and suppressed tumor growth in vivo. Celastrol down-regulated circ_SLIT3 expression in HCC cells, and celastrol exerted an anti-tumor effect on HCC in vitro and in vivo by down-regulating circ_SLIT3. Mechanistically, circ_SLIT3 directly interacted with miR-223-3p, and circ_SLIT3 controlled CXCR4 expression by sponging miR-223-3p. Moreover, miR-223-3p was involved in the celastrol/circ_SLIT3-mediated regulation on HCC progression. D-α-tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS) is a water-soluble derivative of vitamin E, which can self-assemble to form polymeric micelles (PMs) for encapsulating insoluble anti-tumor drugs, thereby effectively enhancing their anti-cancer effects.Methods: HF-loaded TPGS PMs (HTPMs) were manufactured using a thin-film hydration technique, followed by a series of characterizations, including the hydrodynamic diameter (HD), zeta potential (ZP), stability, drug loading (DL), encapsulation efficiency (EE), and in vitro drug release. The anti-cancer effects and potential mechanism of HTPMs were investigated in the breast cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, and normal breast epithelial cell line Eph-ev. The breast cancer-bearing BALB/c nude mouse model was successfully established by subcutaneous injection of MDA-MB-231 cells and used to evaluate the in vivo therapeutic effect and safety of the HTPMs.Results: The optimized HTPMs had an HD of 17.8± 0.5 nm and ZP of 14.40± 0.1 mV. These PMs exhibited DL of 12.94 ± 0.46% and EE of 90.6 ± 0.85%, along with excellent storage stability, dilution tolerance and sustained drug release in pH-dependent manner within 24 h compared to free HF. Additionally, the HTPMs had stronger inhibitory effects than free HF and paclitaxel against MDA-MB-231 triple-negative breast cancer cells, and little toxicity in normal breast epithelial Eph-ev cells. The HTPMs induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of MDA-MB-231 by disrupting the mitochondrial membrane potential and enhancing reactive oxygen species formation. Evaluation of in vivo anti-tumor efficacy demonstrated that HTPMs exerted a stronger tumor inhibition rate (68.17%) than free HF, and exhibited excellent biocompatibility.Conclusion: The findings from this study indicate that HTPMs holds great clinical potential for treating triple-negative breast cancer.Keywords: halofuginone hydrobromide, triple-negative breast cancer, TPGS, polymer micelles

Abstract

The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) network study of 12 cancer types (PanCancer 12) revealed frequent mutation of TP53, and amplification and expression of related TP63 isoform ΔNp63 in squamous cancers. Further, aberrant expression of inflammatory genes and TP53/p63/p73 targets were detected in the PanCancer 12 project, reminiscent of gene programs comodulated by cREL/ΔNp63/TAp73 transcription factors we uncovered in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs). However, how inflammatory gene signatures and cREL/p63/p73 targets are comodulated genome wide is unclear. Here, we examined how the inflammatory factor tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) broadly modulates redistribution of cREL with ΔNp63α/TAp73 complexes and signatures genome wide in the HNSCC model UM-SCC46 using chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq). TNF-α enhanced genome-wide co-occupancy of cREL with ΔNp63α on TP53/p63 sites, while unexpectedly promoting redistribution of TAp73 from TP53 to activator protein-1 (AP-1) sites. cREL, ΔNp63α and TAp73 binding and oligomerization on NF-κB-, TP53- or AP-1-specific sequences were independently validated by ChIP-qPCR (quantitative PCR), oligonucleotide-binding assays and analytical ultracentrifugation. Function of the binding activity was confirmed using TP53-, AP-1- and NF-κB-specific REs or p21, SERPINE1 and IL-6 promoter luciferase reporter activities. Concurrently, TNF-α regulated a broad gene network with cobinding activities for cREL, ΔNp63α and TAp73 observed upon array profiling and reverse transcription-PCR. Overlapping target gene signatures were observed in squamous cancer subsets and in inflamed skin of transgenic mice overexpressing ΔNp63α. Furthermore, multiple target genes identified in this study were linked to TP63 and TP73 activity and increased gene expression in large squamous cancer samples from PanCancer 12 TCGA by CircleMap. PARADIGM inferred pathway analysis revealed the network connection of TP63 and NF-κB complexes through an AP-1 hub, further supporting our findings. Thus, inflammatory cytokine TNF-α mediates genome-wide redistribution of the cREL/p63/p73, and AP-1 interactome, to diminish TAp73 tumor suppressor function and reciprocally activate NF-κB and AP-1 gene programs implicated in malignancy.

Abstract

Demilitarization requires the recovery and disposal of obsolete ammunition and explosives. Since open burning/detonation of hazardous waste has caused serious environmental and safety problems, thermal decomposition has emerged as one of the most feasible methods. RDX is widely used as a military explosive due to its high melting temperature and detonation power. In this work, the feasible conditions under which explosives can be safely incinerated have been investigated via a rotary kiln simulation. To solve this problem, phase change along with the reactions of RDX has been incisively analyzed. A global reaction mechanism consisting of condensed phase and gas phase reactions are used in Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation. User Defined Functions in FLUENT is utilized in this study to inculcate the reactions and phase change into the simulation. The results divulge the effect of temperature and the varying amounts of gas produced in the rotary kiln during the thermal decomposition of RDX. The result leads to the prospect of demilitarizing waste explosives to avoid the possibility of detonation.

Abstract

H2 permeation in peroxide-crosslinked EPDM blended with carbon black (CB) and silica fillers was studied at pressures ranging from 1.2 MPa to 90 MPa via the volumetric analysis technique. H2 uptake in the CB-filled EPDM revealed dual-sorption behaviors via Henry’s law and the Langmuir model, which were attributed to H2 absorption by the polymer chains and H2 adsorption at the filler interfaces, respectively. Additionally, single-sorption mechanisms were observed for neat EPDM and silica-blended EPDM according to Henry’s law, indicating H2 absorption by the polymer chain. The linear decreases in the diffusivity with filler content for the silica-blended EPDMs were attributed to increases in the diffusion paths caused by the filler. Exponential decreases in the diffusivity with increasing filler content and in the permeation with the physical/mechanical properties for CB-filled EPDMs were caused by decreases in the fractional free volume due to increased densities for the EPDM composites. Moreover, good filler-dependent correlations between permeability and density, hardness, and tensile strength were demonstrated for EPDMs used as sealing materials for O-rings. From the resulting equation, we predicted the permeation value without further measurements. Thus, we can select EPDM candidates satisfying the permeation guidelines used in hydrogen infrastructure for the future hydrogen economy.

Abstract

Necrotic enteritis (NE) is a recognized multifactorial disease that cost annually to the poultry industry around $2 billion. However, diverse aspects related to its presentation are not completely understood, requiring further studies using known induction experimental models. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to measure the changes occurring in performance, intestinal integrity and ileal microbiome using a previously established NE-challenge model. Chickens were assigned to a negative control group (NC) or a positive control group (PC). In the PC, broilers were orally gavaged with Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) (1 × 107 cfu/chick) at day 1, Eimeria maxima (EM) (2.5 × 104 oocyst/chick) at day 18 and Clostridium perfringens (CP) (1 × 108 cfu/chick/day) at 23–24 days of age. Weekly, body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were evaluated. Morbidity and mortality were determined throughout the study, and NE lesion scores were recorded at day 25. Additionally, blood and liver samples were collected to measure gut permeability as determined by levels of serum fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran (FITC-d) and bacterial translocation (BT). Ileal contents were processed for 16S rRNA gene-based microbiome analysis. Performance parameters and intestinal permeability measurements were negatively impacted in the PC resulting in elevated serum FITC-d and BT with a −6.4% difference in BWG. The NE lesion score in PC (1.97 vs. 0.00) was significantly higher in comparison to NC, although there was no difference in mortality. The microbiome analysis showed a dramatic shift of ileal microbiomes in PC groups as compared to NC (ANOSIM: R = 0.76, P = 0.001). The shift was characterized by reduced abundance of the phylum Actinobacteria (P < 0.01), and increased abundance of the genera Butyrivibrio, Lactobacillus, Prevotella and Ruminococcus in PC compared to NC (P < 0.05). Expectedly, Clostridium was found higher in PC (2.98 ± 0.71%) as compared to NC (1.84 ± 0.36%), yet the difference was not significant. In conclusion, results of the present study showed the different intestinal epithelial and microbiological alterations occurring in an established NE-challenge model that considers paratyphoid Salmonella infections in young chicks as an important predisposing factor for presentation of NE.

Abstract

A record duration of a 310 s H-mode plasma (H98y2 ∼ 1.3, ne/nGW ∼ 0.7, fBS > 50%) has been recently achieved on experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) with metal walls, exploiting the device's improved long-pulse capabilities. The experiment demonstrates good control of tungsten concentration, core/edge MHD stability, and particle and heat exhaust with an ITER-like tungsten divertor and zero injected torque, establishing a milestone on the path to steady-state long-pulse high-performance scenarios in support of ITER and CFETR. Important synergistic effects are leveraged toward this result, which relies purely on radio frequency (RF) powers for heating and current drive (H&CD). On-axis electron cyclotron heating enhances the H&CD efficiency from lower hybrid wave injection, increasing confinement quality and enabling fully non-inductive operation at high density (ne/nGW ∼ 70%) and high poloidal beta (βP ∼ 2.5). A small-amplitude grassy edge localized mode regime facilitates the RF power coupling to the H-mode edge and reduces divertor sputtering/erosion. The high energy confinement quality (H98y2 ∼ 1.3) is achieved with the experimental and simulated results pointing to the strong effect of Shafranov shift on turbulence. Transport analysis suggests that trapped electron modes dominate in the core region during the record discharge. The detailed physics processes (RF synergy, core-edge integration, confinement properties, etc.) of the steady-state operation will be illustrated in the content. In the future, EAST will aim at accessing more relevant dimensionless parameters to develop long-pulse high-performance plasma toward ITER and CFETR steady-state advanced operation. The 2015 National Health and Morbidity Survey estimated that over 29% of the adult population of Malaysia suffers from mental distress, a nearly 3-fold increase from the 10.7% estimated by the NHMS in 1996 pointing to the potential beginnings of a public health crisis. This study aimed to better understand this trend by assessing depressive symptoms and their correlates in a cross-section of Malaysians. Specifically, it assesses stress, perceived locus of control, and various socio-demographic variables as possible predictors of depressive symptoms in the Malaysian context. A total of 728 adults from three Malaysian states (Selangor, Penang, Terengganu) completed Beck’s depression inventory as well as several other measures: 10% of respondents reported experiencing severe levels of depressive symptoms, 11% reported moderate and 15% reported mild depressive symptoms indicating that Malaysians are experiencing high levels of emotional distress. When controlling for the influence of other variables, depressive symptoms were predictably related to higher levels of stress and lower levels of internal locus of control. Ethnic Chinese Malaysians, housewives and those engaged in professional-type occupations reported less depressive symptoms. Business owners reported more depressive symptoms. Further research should look more into Malaysians’ subjective experience of stress and depression as well as explore environmental factors that may be contributing to mental health issues. It is argued that future policies can be designed to better balance individual mental health needs with economic growth.

Abstract

In this paper, α-olefins with different chain lengths are used as monomers, and metallocene catalysts were used to prepare low-viscosity metallocene-catalysed poly-α-olefin (mPAO) lubricating base oils. Structure and performance tests were carried out. Three molecular structure parameters were selected: relative molecular weight (Mn), branch carbon number (L), and number of branches (n). By mixing and compounding each component oligomer and performing data analysis, the relationships between the molecular structure of mPAO and the key physical properties of the base oil, such as viscosity, viscosity index and pour point (PP), were studied. The results show that in a certain range of Mn, when L (or n) is constant, with an increase in Mn, the viscosity (Kv) and Mn show a power function growth trend, and the growth rate of Kv40°C is greater than that of Kv100°C. The viscosity index (VI) increases with increasing Mn, a greater n results in a more obvious growth trend, and a greater L results in a weaker growth trend. When L is constant, an increase in n results in an initial decrease followed by an increase in PP, and PP is the lowest at n = 2.

Abstract

Making a diagnosis of perioperative anaphylaxis and identifying culprit drugs are diagnostic challenges. The aim of this study is to describe the perioperative presentation of anaphylaxis and results of patients who underwent allergy evaluation. This is a retrospective review of perioperative anaphylaxis of severity Grade 2 and above based on the Australian and New Zealand Anaesthetic Allergy Group criteria from 2015 to 2019 in a tertiary paediatric hospital. Data collected were demographics, clinical features, investigations and management. Of the 35,361 cases of paediatric anaesthesia, there were 15 cases of perioperative anaphylaxis, giving an incidence of four in 10,000. The median age was seven years (interquartile range four–15 years) with a male predominance of 86.7% (13/15). The severity of anaphylaxis was Grade 2 in 33.3% (5/15) and Grade 3 in 66.7% (10/15). The commonest presenting feature was hypotension (13/15, 86.7%) while the earliest symptom was respiratory change (9/15, 60.0%). Dynamic tryptase was raised in 75% (6/8) of the patients with adequate tryptase samples. Eight patients (53.3%) completed allergy testing, of whom five patients (62.5%) had IgE-mediated anaphylaxis with skin test positive to cefazolin ( n = 3), atracurium ( n = 1) and rocuronium ( n = 1). Three patients (25.0%) had non–IgE-mediated reactions with negative skin tests. Although only half the patients completed allergy evaluation, a culprit drug could be identified in 62.5%, with antibiotics being the commonest. This emphasises the need for appropriate evaluation in cases of suspected perioperative anaphylaxis.

Abstract

As innovation is critical in driving growth and competitiveness, companies establish innovation (or new product) portfolio processes to select the “right” innovation projects and allocate the necessary resources. These processes have attracted considerable interest from both academics and practice. However, results of innovation portfolio management processes are widely perceived as unsatisfactory. This study provides a systematic overview of portfolio management approaches and research advances of the past decades, and it explores the root causes of innovation portfolio management challenges. We propose that the problem is a result of an overemphasis on project selection (from an assumed available list of reasonable candidates), which has led to a focus on analytical methods of portfolio evaluation that are applied generically (not customized to the specific strategy of the organization). As a result, the creation or assembly of initiatives that cover the strategic innovation goals of the organization, in other word, portfolio design as a creative process, has been neglected. The result has been sophistication but little alignment with the specific strategic aims of the organization. We propose that a focus on portfolio design, followed by portfolio evaluation and management (with iteration feedback) may at least mitigate the widely observed challenges. We illustrate with a case example how the process might work. This proposal asks for new empirical research.

Abstract

DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limit

Abstract

This paper summarizes a ground-motion database developed for the NGA-Sub Project. The database consists of two- and three-component ground-motion recordings from selected earthquakes in subduction zones. The database also includes the supporting data such as source, path, and site metadata. The earthquakes are located in Japan, Taiwan, the Pacific Northwest region of North America, Alaska, Mexico, Central and South America, and New Zealand. The events in the database are classified as interface, intraslab, or outer-rise, and have magnitudes ranging from 4 to 9. The database includes more than 71,000 three-component recordings, most of which are from digital accelerograms. The database includes PGA, PGV, pseudo-spectral acceleration for eleven damping values between 0.5% and 30%, Fourier amplitude spectra for frequencies from 0.1 to 100 Hz, and significant-shaking durations based on Arias Intensity. These data are analyzed in the project to model various ground-motion properties.

Abstract

DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I (p) steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at similar to 8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I (p) beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. Abstract

DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limit
