Abstract Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) provides a fascinating platform for engineering flat bands and inducing correlated phenomena. By designing the stacking architecture of graphene layers, twisted multilayer graphene can exhibit different symmetries with rich tunability. For example, in twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) which breaks the C 2z symmetry, transport measurements reveal an asymmetric phase diagram under an out-of-plane electric field, exhibiting correlated insulating state and ferromagnetic state respectively when reversing the field direction. Revealing how the electronic structure evolves with electric field is critical for providing a better understanding of such asymmetric field-tunable properties. Here we report the experimental observation of field-tunable dichotomic electronic structure of tMBG by nanospot angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (NanoARPES) with operando gating. Interestingly, selective enhancement of the relative spectral weight contributions from monolayer and bilayer graphene is observed when switching the polarity of the bias voltage. Combining experimental results with theoretical calculations, the origin of such field-tunable electronic structure, resembling either tBLG or twisted double-bilayer graphene (tDBG), is attributed to the selectively enhanced contribution from different stacking graphene layers with a strong electron-hole asymmetry. Our work provides electronic structure insights for understanding the rich field-tunable physics of tMBG.

High-quality ultrafast light sources are critical for developing advanced time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TrARPES). While the application of high harmonic generation (HHG) light sources in TrARPES has increased substantially over the past decade, the optimization of the HHG probe beam size and selective control of the light polarization, which are important for TrARPES measurements, have been rarely explored. In this work, we report the implementation of high-quality HHG probe source with an optimum beam size down to 57 μm × 90 μm and selective light polarization control, together with mid-infrared (MIR) pumping source for TrARPES measurements using a 10-kHz amplifier laser. The selective polarization control of the HHG probe source allows to enhance bands with different orbital contributions or symmetries, as demonstrated by experimental data measured on a few representative transition metal dichalcogenide materials as well as topological insulator Bi2Se3. Furthermore, by combining the HHG probe source with MIR pumping at 2-μm wavelength, TrARPES on a bilayer graphene shows a time resolution of 140 fs, allowing to distinguish 2 different relaxation processes in graphene. Such high-quality HHG probe source together with the MIR pumping expands the capability of TrARPES in revealing the ultrafast dynamics and light-induced emerging phenomena in quantum materials.

Abstract Ionic liquids provide versatile pathways for controlling the structures and properties of quantum materials. Previous studies have reported electrostatic gating of nanometer-thick flakes leading to emergent superconductivity, insertion or extraction of protons and oxygen ions in perovskite oxide films enabling the control of different phases and material properties, and intercalation of large-sized organic cations into layered crystals giving access to tailored superconductivity. Here, we report an ionic-liquid gating method to form three-dimensional transition metal monochalcogenides (TMMCs) by driving the metals dissolved from layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) into the van der Waals gap. We demonstrate the successful self-intercalation of PdTe2 and NiTe2, turning them into high-quality PdTe and NiTe single crystals, respectively. Moreover, the monochalcogenides exhibit distinctive properties from dichalcogenides. For instance, the self-intercalation of PdTe2 leads to the emergence of superconductivity in PdTe. Our work provides a synthesis pathway for TMMCs by means of ionic liquid gating driven self-intercalation.

In acute ischemic stroke therapy, potent neuroprotective agents are needed that prevent neural injuries caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) during ischemic reperfusion. Herein, a novel 2D neuroprotective agent (AFGd-LDH) is reported, comprising Gd-containing layered double hydroxide nanosheets (Gd-LDH, as a drug nanocarrier/MRI contrast agent), atorvastatin (ATO, as a neuroprotective drug) and the ferritin heavy subunit (FTH, as a blood brain barrier transport agent). Experiments revealed AFGd-LDH to possess outstanding antioxidant activity, neuroprotective properties, blood‒brain barrier transit properties, and biocompatibility. In vitro studies demonstrated the ROS scavenging efficiency of AFGd‒LDH to be ∼90%, surpassing CeO2 (50%, a ROS scavenger) and edaravone (52%, a clinical neuroprotective drug). Ischemia‒reperfusion model studies in mice showed AFGd‒LDH could dramatically decrease apoptosis induced by reperfusion, reducing the infarct area by 67% and lowering the neurological deficit score from 3.2 to 0.9. AFGd-LDH also offered outstanding MRI performance, thus enabling simultaneous imaging and ischemia reperfusion therapy.

Abstract Cooking oil fumes (COFs) represent a major indoor environmental pollutant and exhibit potent mutagenic or carcinogenic health effects caused by containing various heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) and long-chain aldehydes. Despite some evaluation of the cumulative exposure of COFs to cancer cells under high concentration were evaluated, their biological adverse effects with low-dose exposure to healthy cells had been inadequately investigated. Herein, we firstly scrutinized the three selected typically toxic compounds of heterocyclic amine 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP), 3,8-dimethylammidazo[4,5-f]quinoxalin-2-amine (MeIQx) and trans, trans-2,4-decadienal (TDA)) emitted from COFs. In vitro studies revealed that the PhIP, MeIQx and TDA aerosol particles were negligible toxicity to cancer cells (A549 and HepG-2) but strong cytotoxicity to normal healthy cells (HelF and L02) under 0.5–4 μg/mL low dose exposure based on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) mechanism. In vivo studies demonstrated that PhIP caused significant lung and liver damage after exposure to PhIP for 30 days with mice. These results indicated the direct proof of healthy cell damage even at low-dose exposure to HAAs and aldehydes.

Many topological semimetals are excellent thermoelectric materials, but previous studies were limited to steady-state properties. Here, the authors observe a transient thermoelectric response in Cd3As2 by detecting the resulting THz emission, with an enhanced response when a small magnetic field is applied.

Obtaining spatially-resolved electronic structure information at the microscale is key to a complete understanding of phase transitions and domain separation in the solid-state. Here, micro- and nanoscale angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals the electronic structure of domains in the striped phase of IrTe2.

Abstract Electron-electron interaction is fundamental in condensed matter physics and can lead to composite quasiparticles called plasmarons, which strongly renormalize the dispersion and carry information of electron-electron coupling strength as defined by the effective fine structure constant $${\alpha }_{ee}^{* }$$ α e e * . Although h-BN with unique dielectric properties has been widely used as an important substrate for graphene, so far there is no experimental report of plasmarons in graphene/h-BN yet. Here, we report direct experimental observation of plasmaron dispersion in graphene/h-BN heterostructures through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements upon in situ electron doping. Characteristic diamond-shaped dispersion is observed near the Dirac cone in both 0° (aligned) and 13.5° (twisted) graphene/h-BN, and the electron-electron interaction strength $${\alpha }_{ee}^{* }$$ α e e * is extracted to be $${\alpha }_{ee}^{* }\approx 0.9\pm 0.1$$ α e e * ≈ 0.9 ± 0.1 , highlighting the important role of electron-electron interaction. Our results suggest graphene/h-BN as an ideal platform for investigating strong electron-electron interaction with weak dielectric screening, and lays fundamental physics for gate-tunable nano-electronics and nano-plasmonics.

Monolayer transition metal dechalcogenides are a promising platform to study the interplay of low-dimensionality and electron correlations. Here, the authors report a Mott insulator state in monolayer 1T-TaSe2, that survives far above room temperature and is robust against external perturbations.

With the development of laser technology, the research of novel laser protection materials is of great significance. In this work, dispersible siloxene nanosheets (SiNSs) with a thickness of about 1.5 nm are prepared by the top-down topological reaction method. Based on the Z-scan and optical limiting testing under the visible-near IR ranges nanosecond laser, the broad-band nonlinear optical properties of the SiNSs and their hybrid gel glasses are investigated. The results show that the SiNSs have outstanding nonlinear optical properties. Meanwhile, the SiNSs hybrid gel glasses also exhibit high transmittance and excellent optical limiting capabilities. It demonstrates that SiNSs are promising materials for broad-band nonlinear optical limiting and even have potential applications in optoelectronics.

High-resolution neutron radiography provides novel and stirring opportunities to investigate the structures of light elements encased by heavy elements. For this study, a series of Gd2O2S:Tb, F particles were prepared using a high-temperature solid phase method and then used as a scintillation screen. Upon reaching 293 nm excitation, a bright green emission originated from the Tb3+ luminescence center. The level of F doping affected the fluorescence intensity. When the F doping level was 8 mol%, the fluorescence intensity was at its highest. The absolute quantum yield of the synthesized particles reached as high as 77.21%. Gd2O2S:Tb, F particles were applied to the scintillation screen, showing a resolution on the neutron radiograph as high as 12 μm. These results suggest that the highly efficient Gd2O2S:Tb, F particles are promising scintillators for the purposes of cold neutron radiography.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of eyelid hygiene using topical 0.01% hypochlorous acid (HOCL) through ultrasonic atomization after 2 weeks in patients with blepharitis. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Patients with blepharitis were randomized into two groups: topical 0.01% HOCL through ultrasonic atomization (HOCL group, 42 eyes) or eyelid scrubs (control group, 37 eyes). Patients in both groups received warm compresses twice daily and topical 0.5% levofloxacin three times a day. Primary outcomes were the ocular surface disease index scores (OSDI), lid margin redness, lid margin abnormalities, meibum expressibility, meibum quality, and noninvasive breakup time after 2 weeks. Secondary outcomes were conjunctiva redness, corneal fluorescein staining, and tear meniscus height. A questionnaire of treatment adherence with a free response section was administered to confirm patient compliance and comments. Results: Sixty-seven participants participated in this study. Both groups show an improvement in all primary outcomes, while statistically significant improvements in OSDI, lid margin redness, lid margin abnormality, meibum expressibility and quality are only limited to the HOCL group after 2 weeks of treatment (p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.001, p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). Subgroup analysis in HOCL reveals that only the change in lid margin abnormality and meibum expressibility in the mild–moderate meibomian glands loss patients at baseline has a statistically significant difference p < 0.05). Multiple linear regression shows that the improvement in OSDI is negatively associated with meibum expressibility score at the baseline (95% CI [−28.846, −1.815], p = 0.028). The patient compliance is 7.1 ± 2.0 in the HOCL group and 7.1 ± 1.8 in the control group (p > 0.05). No adverse events are reported. Conclusion: Topical 0.01% HOCL through ultrasonic atomization is a tolerable and effective eyelid hygiene treatment for blepharitis.

A family of tribenzocoronene derivatives bearing various substituents (3) were constructed through the Diels–Alder reaction, followed by the Scholl oxidation, where the molecular structure of 3b was determined via single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The effect of substitution on the optical and electrochemical property was systematically investigated, with the assistance of theoretical calculations. Moreover, the thin films of the resulting molecules 3b and 3e complexed with fullerene produced strong photocurrent response upon irradiation of white light. In addition, 3b and 3e exhibit a positive nonlinear optical response resulting from the two-photon absorption and excited state absorption processes.

Abstract Photoacoustics is a promising technique for in-depth imaging of biological tissues. However, the lateral resolution of photoacoustic imaging is limited by size of the optical excitation spot, and therefore by light diffraction and scattering. Several super-resolution approaches, among which methods based on localization of labels and particles, have been suggested, presenting promising but limited solutions. This work demonstrates a novel concept for extended-resolution imaging based on separation and localization of multiple sub-pixel absorbers, each characterized by a distinct acoustic response. Sparse autoencoder algorithm is used to blindly decompose the acoustic signal into its various sources and resolve sub-pixel features. This method can be used independently or as a combination with other super-resolution techniques to gain further resolution enhancement and may also be extended to other imaging schemes. In this paper, the general idea is presented in details and experimentally demonstrated.

The transport behavior at the quantum limit may show exotic phenomena such as special interlayer quantum transport. Here, the authors observe negative interlayer magnetoresistance resulted from tunneling of Dirac fermions between the zeroth Landau levels in BaGa2, indicating a feature at the quantum limit.

To explore the safety and feasibility of low fluence intense pulsed light (IPL) for treating pediatric patients with moderate-to-severe blepharitis and to analyze potential factors associated with the recovery of meibomian glands (MG) dropout, a retrospective, noncomparative study, including 17 blepharitis patients (33 eyes) aged between 5 and 16 years old was conducted. All of the participants were given 4 continuous sessions of low-fluence (9–12 J/cm2) IPL at 3–4 week intervals. Corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), tear breakup time (BUT), inferior tear meniscus height, Demodex presence, and MG morphology were examined before and after the treatment. Results indicated that CFS, BUT and MG morphology (central/total gland area ratio and gland signal index) had significantly improved (p < 0.05). Symptoms and signs such as severe corneal neovascularization, limbal pannus and conjunctival congestion also subsided. Among age, gender, presence of Demodex and interval before diagnosis, age initiating the formal treatment was confirmed as a negatively correlated factor of the recovery of MG dropout (p = 0.032, B = −1.755). No notable adverse events were reported. In conclusion, low fluence IPL seems to be a safe and effective alternative for moderate-to-severe pediatric blepharitis, and MG dropout is prone to recover in younger patients.

During the storage of agricultural products, the oxygen concentration in the packages represents the level of food respiration and hence indicates its freshness. Herein, self-referenced photoluminescent oxygen sensitive fibrous membranes were prepared, with the inclusion of an oxygen-sensitive probe, i.e. tris (4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) ruthenium (II) dichloride (RuDPP), with an oxygen-insensitive luminophore, i.e. silane-functionalized carbon dots (SiCDs). Silicone was selected as the matrix, obtained via sol-gel process, and was electrospun to get nanofibers containing mesoporous microstructure and with high oxygen permeability. The as-prepared RuDPP@SiCDs/SiO2 fibrous membranes possessed hydrophobicity and exhibited ideal oxygen sensitivity, which realized a remote evaluation of the freshness of packaged fruits, through ratiometric photoluminescence imaging on the concentration change of environmental oxygen. The results indicate that such kind of oxygen-sensitive fiber membranes are capable as an optical oxygen sensor for agricultural applications.

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is one of the most common ocular disorders in clinical practice and is associated with meibomian gland dysfunction. This study aimed to explore the morphological and functional changes of meibomian glands (MGs) in pediatric and adult patients with AC and to analyze their potential predictors. In our prospective, observational cohort study, a total of 59 patients with AC were enrolled, with 30 patients aged ≤16 years in the pediatric group and 29 patients in the adult group. All patients underwent examinations at baseline and last visit when the complete resolution of conjunctival papillae was identified. An automatic MG analyzer was used to measure the morphological and functional parameters of MGs, including their area ratio (GA), tortuosity index (TI), and signal index (SI). Two groups were comparable at baseline in terms of characteristics and MG parameters (p > 0.05). The morphological (length, square, and GA) and functional MG parameters (SI) of AC patients significantly improved in the pediatric group after treatment (all p < 0.05), but not in the adult group. The change in the GA correlated with age, sex, GA, TI, and SI at baseline (all p < 0.05). Age (p = 0.001) and GA (p < 0.001) at baseline were predictors of an improvement in the GA of MGs. The findings showed that the structure and function of MGs in pediatric patients with AC seem to improve after the conjunctival papillae disappear, but not in adult patients.

Abstract Both p-type and n-type MoTe2 transistors are needed to fabricate complementary electronic and optoelectronic devices. In this study, we fabricate air-stable p-type multi-layered MoTe2 transistors using Au as electrode and achieve the conversion of p-type transistor to n-type by annealing it in vacuum. Temperature-dependent in situ measurements assisted by the results given by first-principle simulations indicate that n-type conductance is an intrinsic property, which is attributed to tellurium vacancies in MoTe2, while the device in air experiences a charge transfer which is caused by oxygen/water redox couple and is converted to air-stable p-type transistor. Based on p-type and n-type multi-layered MoTe2 transistors, we demonstrate a complementary inverter with gain values as high as 9 at V DD = 5 V.

With the advancement of ultra-fast and high-energy pulsed laser output, lasers have caused serious harm to precision instruments and human eyes. Therefore, the development of optical limiting materials with a fast response, low optical limiting threshold, and high damage threshold are important. In this work, for the first time, it is reported that phosphors Gd2O2S:Tb3+(GOS) displays exceptional functionality in laser protection. GOS with sizes of 11 μm, 1 μm, and 0.45 μm are prepared. Based on the optical limiting and Z-scan technology systems under 532 nm and 1064 nm nanosecond laser excitation, the nonlinear optical properties of GOS are investigated. It is found that GOS exhibits outstanding optical limiting properties. In addition, the optical limiting response of GOS is size-dependent. Concerning the largest particle size, GOS has the best nonlinear optical response, while the precursor shows no nonlinear optical performance. Meanwhile, GOS doped gel glass also displays excellent optical limiting properties with high transmittance, which preliminarily validates the application of GOS and other scintillators in nonlinear optics and encourages more research to better realize the potential of GOS.

Abstract In this study, we fabricate air-stable p-type multi-layered MoTe2 phototransistor using Au as electrodes, which shows pronounced photovoltaic response in off-state with asymmetric contact form. By analyzing the spatially resolved photoresponse using scanning photocurrent microscopy, we found that the potential steps are formed in the vicinity of the electrodes/MoTe2 interface due to the doping of the MoTe2 by the metal contacts. The potential step dominates the separation of photoexcited electron-hole pairs in short-circuit condition or with small V sd biased. Based on these findings, we infer that the asymmetric contact cross-section between MoTe2-source and MoTe2-drain electrodes is the reason to form non-zero net current and photovoltaic response. Furthermore, MoTe2 phototransistor shows a faster response in short-circuit condition than that with higher biased V sd within sub-millisecond, and its spectral range can be extended to the infrared end of 1550 nm.

The absence of an ideal solid matrix with resistance to harsh conditions for carbon dots (CDs) and high transmittance in the visible/near infrared region is the bottleneck in CD applications. In this study, we show that a stable rigid structure can be formed between CDs and organically modified silicates (ormosil) gel when CDs are incorporated into ormosil gel hybrids as a solid matrix. A high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 63% is achieved at a 583 nm emission. Peak optical gain of the hybrids was found to be 67 cm−1 at peak wavelength. Ultralow threshold (~70 W/cm2) lasing can also be demonstrated from a planar microcavity by using CD–ormosil gel hybrids as a gain medium.

Whether the spin-degenerate counterpart of Lorentz-violating Weyl fermions, the Dirac fermions, can be realized remains as an open question. Here, Yan et al. report experimental evidence of such type-II Dirac fermions in bulk PtTe2 single crystal with a pair of strongly tilted Dirac cones.

Spin polarization in non-magnetic solids has mainly been limited to non-centrosymmetric materials. Here, the authors identify a helical spin texture in the centrosymmetric semiconductor platinum diselenide, and suggest it arises from a local dipole induced Rashba effect rather than the usual spin-splitting.

To experimentally confirm the predicted type-II Weyl fermions in transition metal dichalcogenide, the evidence of inversion symmetry breaking is required. Here, Zhanget al. report Raman spectroscopic evidence for the inversion symmetry breaking in MoTe2.

In this paper, near infrared (NIR) absorbing dye and fluorane dye (FD) was successfully encapsulated into microcapsules with NIR light responsive performance. The NIR responsive microcapsules are able to be utilized in information recording and anti-counterfeiting fields. Specifically, the factors effecting on synthesis of NIR responsive microcapsules were studied in detail. Microcapsules with an average particle size of 0.2 ∼ 0.5 μ m were prepared by adjusting the mass ratio of shell/core material, the viscosity of oil phase and the mass ratio of water/oil (W/O) phase. It was found that the preferred reaction condition was the feeding mass ratio of shell/core materiel at 1:2 and the W/O phase mass ratio of 2:1. When the feeding mass ratio of NIR absorbing dye and FD is 1/10, the NIR responsive microcapsules have the best coloration performance. Then the NIR responsive microcapsules were coated on aluminum substrate and scanned by 808 nm near-infrared laser, the image precision reached 20 μ m.

Emphasis using phototheranostics has been placed on the construction of multifunctional nanoplatforms for simultaneous tumor diagnosis and therapy. Herein, we put forth a novel nanosized luminescent material using the incorporation of red emissive carbon dots on gold nanorods through polyethylene glycol as a covalent linkage for dual-modal imaging and photothermal therapy. The novel nanohybrids, not only retain the optical properties of the gold nanorod and carbon dots, but also possess superior imaging performance in both confocal laser scanning microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy. The nanohybrids also exhibit excellent photothermal performance as phototheranostic nanohybrid probes for in vitro assays. This study promises a new multifunctional nanoplatform for cancer diagnostics and therapeutics.
