The concept of “platform technology” gained prominence after the Ebola outbreak and since then has become essential to international vaccine (prophylactic vaccines against infectious disease) regulatory frameworks. Its significance was further amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic, where platform technology enabled the rapid development and approval of vaccines, optimizing regulatory processes, and enhancing global public health responses. As a transformative tool, platform technology streamlines product development, allowing for the reduction in the number of clinical trials or exemption from certain clinical trials and facilitating cross-referencing in regulatory submissions. Despite significant efforts to establish standardized regulatory procedures, challenges remain, particularly in achieving a unified definition and application of platform technology across regions. This paper explores the evolution, applications, and regulatory strategies of platform technology, with a focus on China’s experience in this field. China’s approach, encompassing risk assessment, and the expedited approval of emergency vaccines, offers valuable insights into global regulatory coordination. By analyzing China’s regulatory contributions and international practices, this paper highlights the potential of platform technology to address future pandemics, including “Pathogen X”, and underscores the importance of harmonizing global regulatory efforts to strengthen public health preparedness and response.

Under global warming, seasonal snow takes faster melting rate than before, which greatly changes the hydrological cycle. In this study, by targeting three typical seasonal snow-covered land types (i.e., open shrubland, evergreen needleleaf forest and mixed forest) in the Northern Hemisphere, the start of growing season (SGS) has been found obviously advanced in the past years, greatly contributed by the faster melting rate of seasonal snow. It is manifested that significantly positive correlation has been found between SGS and May snow depth for open shrubs, March and April snow depth for evergreen needleleaf forests and March snow depth for mixed forests. However, such close association is not appeared in all the climate conditions of same vegetation. In the future, as the rate of melting snow becomes faster in the high emission of greenhouse gasses than the current situation, continuously advanced SGS will accelerate the change of vegetation distribution in the Northern Hemisphere. These findings offer insights into understanding the effect from seasonal snow on vegetation and promote the sustainable utilization of regional vegetation in the Northern Hemisphere.

Marination is a common technology in meat processing with advantages of enhancing tenderness, water retention, and overall quality. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of vacuum tumbling and immersion marination on meat quality, microstructure, water mobility, protein changes, and denaturation of Xueshan chicken. Results showed that vacuum tumbling significantly increased the marinating rate of chicken, tenderness, meat texture, and water retention. Meanwhile, vacuum tumbling decreased total sulfhydryl content alongside an increased protein surface hydrophobicity and free sulfhydryl content, indicating that vacuum tumbling elevated the degree of protein denaturation. Further, the peak area corresponding to the relaxation time T22 after vacuum tumbling was significantly higher than that of immersion marination, suggesting that the stability of the immobilized water of chicken was reduced by vacuum tumbling. Compared to immersion marination, vacuum tumbling improved myofibril fragmentation index (MFI) presenting fewer myofibrillar protein bands in sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) gel and more damaged muscular cells. Overall, vacuum tumbling could improve the marination absorptivity, protein degradation, and denaturation, resulting in changes in myofibril structure and meat quality of Xueshan chicken.

Many laboratory studies have shown that particle size distribution (PSD) affects the liquefaction susceptibility of granular materials. However, few studies have focused on the impact of PSD on coral particles. In this study, two different soil families were prepared: one with three levels of mean particle size (D50) with identical uniformity coefficient (Cu)and the other with four levels of Cu with the same D50 for coral gravelly soils. In addition, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were conducted on coral gravelly particles with two groups of PSDs at a relative density of 40% and an adequate confining pressure of 100 kPa. The test results indicated that D50 with identical Cu can affect the undrained cyclic behavior of coral gravelly particles. In contrast, Cu with identical D50 does not impact the undrained cyclic behavior of coral gravelly particles. The developing pore water pressure was uniform when the sample was subjected to the same cyclic loading. For samples with changing D50 values of 2.35, 4.70, and 7.05 mm, increasing D50 improved the cyclic liquefaction resistance. For samples with changing Cu, increasing Cu in the range of 1.06–5.00 first increased and then decreased the liquefaction resistance.

According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, malaria is still one of the main diseases affecting human health, especially in Africa, and inflicts a heavy disease burden and a huge economic burden in endemic countries. At present, the widespread emergence of antimalarial drug resistance and unresolved drug availability issues have led researchers to turn their attention to the development of antimalarial vaccines. This review aims at highlighting the recent development of malaria vaccines and discussing the challenges.

As a result of global warming, the lengths of the four seasons, which are always taken as constant values, have experienced significant variations with rising temperature. Such changes play different roles with regard to regional climate change, with the most significant effect on drylands. To guarantee local crop yields and preserve ecosystems, identification of the changes of the four seasons in drylands is important. Our results show that, relative to humid lands, changing trends in lengths of spring, summer, and autumnwere particularly enhanced in drylands of the Northern Hemispheremidlatitudes during 1951-2020. In this period, summer length has increased by 0.51 days per year, while spring and autumn lengths have both contracted by 0.14 days per year. However, the enhanced changes in drylands did not appear in winter length. The winter has shortened by 0.23 days per year in drylands. Such changes of spring, summer, and autumn in drylands are dominated by internal variability over the entire study period, with a stronger external forcing effect on drylands than on humid lands. In drylands, the external forcing contributed to the lengths of spring, summer, and autumn by 30.1%, 42.2%, and 29.4%, respectively. The external forcing has become an increasingly important component since 1990, with the ability to dominate all seasons in drylands after 2010. Nevertheless, only 1 of the 16 models from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) used in this study can capture the enhanced changes in the lengths of spring, summer, and autumn in drylands. Further investigation on the local effects of changes in seasons on agriculture and ecosystem would be needed, especially for the fragile regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

All-solution-processed organic optoelectronic devices can enable the large-scale manufacture of ultrathin wearable electronics with integrated diverse functions. However, the complex multilayer-stacking device structure of organic optoelectronics poses challenges for scalable production. Here, we establish all-solution processes to fabricate a wearable, self-powered photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor. We achieve comparable performance and improved stability compared to complex reference devices with evaporated electrodes by using a trilayer device structure applicable to organic photovoltaics, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. The PPG sensor array based on all-solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes and photodetectors can be fabricated on a large-area ultrathin substrate to achieve long storage stability. We integrate it with a large-area, all-solution-processed organic solar module to realize a self-powered health monitoring system. We fabricate high-throughput wearable electronic devices with complex functions on large-area ultrathin substrates based on organic optoelectronics.
