Quantum enhanced receivers are endowed with resources to achieve higher sensitivities than conventional technologies. For application in optical communications, they provide improved discriminatory capabilities for multiple non-orthogonal quantum states. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a new decoding scheme for quadrature phase-shift encoded signals. Our receiver surpasses the standard quantum limit and outperforms all previously known non-adaptive detectors at low input powers. Unlike existing approaches, the receiver only exploits linear optical elements and on-off photo-detection. This circumvents the requirement for challenging feed-forward operations that limit communication transmission rates and can be readily implemented with current technology., 11 pages with 10 figures with appendices. We determine the optimal method of discriminating and comparing quantum states from a certain class of multimode Gaussian states and their mixtures when arbitrary global Gaussian operations and general Gaussian measurements are allowed. We consider the so-called constant-$\hat{p}$ displaced states which include mixtures of multimode coherent states arbitrarily displaced along a common axis. We first show that no global or local Gaussian transformations or generalized Gaussian measurements can lead to a better discrimination method than simple homodyne measurements applied to each mode separately and classical postprocessing of the results. This result is applied to binary state comparison problems. We show that homodyne measurements, separately performed on each mode, are the best Gaussian measurement for binary state comparison. We further compare the performance of the optimal Gaussian strategy for binary coherent states comparison with these of non-Gaussian strategies using photon detections., 8 pages, 3 figures

Measurement and discrimination of quantum states are essential tasks in quantum information processing. A measurement strategy consisting of photon detection preceded by a displacement operation, that is actively feedback-controlled depending on the photon detection outcomes, is known to be a powerful measurement technique for quantum state discrimination [1] . In our work, we experimentally develop such a feedback measurement with photon detection and characterize its positive operator valued measure (POVM) via quantum detector tomography using coherent states. Quantum detector tomography has been demonstrated for various types of static measurements [3] , but not before for a dynamically updated measurement. As a potential application of the feedback measurement for quantum state discrimination, we analyze the performance of our measurement for the discrimination of the two orthogonal superpositions of vacuum and single photon states $| \pm \rangle = (|0\rangle \pm |1\rangle )/\sqrt 2 $ , which are the conjugate basis states of the optical single-rail qubit.

Discrimination of coherent states beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL) is an important tasknot only for quantum information processing but also for optical coherent communication. In orderto optimize long distance optical fiber networks, it is of practical importance to develop a quantumreceiver beating the SQL and approaching the quantum bound at telecom wavelength. In this paper,we experimentally demonstrate a receiver beating the conventional SQL at telecom wavelength. Ourreceiver is composed of a displacement operation, a single photon counter and a real time adaptivefeedback operation. By using a high performance single photon detector operating at the telecomwavelength, we achieve a discrimination error beyond the SQL. The demonstration in the telecomband provides the first step important towards quantum and classical communication beyond theSQL using a coherent state alphabet, and we envision that the technology can be used for long-distance quantum key distribution, effective quantum state preparation and quantum estimation.

Networking is integral to quantum communications1 and has significant potential for upscaling quantum computer technologies2. Recently, it was realized that the sensing performances of multiple spatially distributed parameters may also be enhanced through the use of an entangled quantum network3–10. Here, we experimentally demonstrate how sensing of an averaged phase shift among four distributed nodes benefits from an entangled quantum network. Using a four-mode entangled continuous-variable state, we demonstrate deterministic quantum phase sensing with a precision beyond what is attainable with separable probes. The techniques behind this result can have direct applications in a number of areas ranging from molecular tracking to quantum networks of atomic clocks. Experiments demonstrate quantum phase sensing with a four-mode entangled state, reaching a measurement precision that is beyond what can be achieved by separate individual probes.

One of the peculiar features in quantum mechanics is that a superposition of macroscopically distinct states can exist. In optical system, this is highlighted by a superposition of coherent states (SCS), i.e. a superposition of classical states. Recently this highly nontrivial quantum state and its variant have been demonstrated experimentally. Here we demonstrate the superposition of coherent states in quantum measurement which is also a key concept in quantum mechanics. More precisely, we propose and implement a projection measurement onto an arbitrary superposition of two weak coherent states in optical system. The measurement operators are reconstructed experimentally by a novel quantum detector tomography protocol. Our device is realized by combining the displacement operation and photon counting, well established technologies, and thus has implications in various optical quantum information processing applications.

We investigate the sensitivity of distributed phase sensing with squeezed state probes. By creating mode entanglement between probes with a beam-splitter network, sensitivity enhancement over independent probes is observed experimentally for the first time.

In the lore of quantum metrology, one often hears (or reads) the following no-go theorem: If you put vacuum into one input port of a balanced Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, then no matter what you put into the other input port, and no matter what your detection scheme, the sensitivity can never be better than the shot noise limit (SNL). Often the proof of this theorem is cited to be in Ref. [C. Caves, Phys. Rev. D 23, 1693 (1981)], but upon further inspection, no such claim is made there. A quantum-Fisher-information-based argument suggestive of this no-go theorem appears in Ref. [M. Lang and C. Caves, Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 173601 (2013)], but is not stated in its full generality. Here we thoroughly explore this no-go theorem and give the rigorous statement: the no-go theorem holds whenever the unknown phase shift is split between both arms of the interferometer, but remarkably does not hold when only one arm has the unknown phase shift. In the latter scenario, we provide an explicit measurement strategy that beats the SNL. We investigate the performance of a detection strategy composed of a displacement operation and a photon counter, which is known as a beneficial tool in optical coherent communications, to the quantum state discrimination of the two superpositions of vacuum and single photon states corresponding to the eigenstates in the single-rail encoding of photonic qubits. We experimentally characterize the detection strategy in vacuum-single photon two-dimensional space using quantum detector tomography and evaluate the achievable discrimination error probability from the reconstructed measurement operators. We furthermore derive the minimum error rate obtainable with Gaussian transformations and homodyne detection. Our proof-of-principle experiment shows that the proposed scheme can achieve a discrimination error surpassing homodyne detection.

We numerically study the performance of the displacement based quantum receiver for the discrimination of weak 3- and 4-phase-shift keyed (PSK) coherent state signals. We show that due to the nontrivial asymmetry of the receiver structure, optimization of the prior probability increases the mutual information and achieves sub-shot-noise limit discrimination. Moreover, we estimate the cutoff rate for a 4-PSK signal and confirm that the prior probability optimization shortens the code length for a given decoding error criterion. Such consideration for the asymmetric channel matrix is essential in a study of the compassable quantum receiver.

We consider the phase sensing via a weak optical coherent state at quantum limit precision. A detection scheme for the phase estimation is proposed, which is inspired by the suboptimal quantum measurement in coherent optical communication. We theoretically analyze a performance of our detection scheme, which we call the displaced-photon counting, for phase sensing in terms of the Fisher information and show that the displaced-photon counting outperforms the static homodyne and heterodyne detections in a wide range of the target phase. The proof-of-principle experiment is performed with linear optics and a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector. The result shows that our scheme overcomes the limit of the ideal homodyne measurement, even under practical imperfections.

We demonstrate a down-conversion-based twin photon source pumped by a 10 GHz repetition-rate-tunable comb laser at 1553 nm wavelength. We show high Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibilities, which are free from the pump-power induced degradation.

Efficient generation and detection of indistinguishable twin photons are at the core of quantum information and communications technology (Q-ICT). These photons are conventionally generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), which is a probabilistic process and hence occurs at a limited rate, which restricts wider applications of Q-ICT. To increase the rate, one had to excite SPDC by higher pump power, while it inevitably produced more unwanted multi-photon components, harmfully degrading quantum interference visibility. Here we solve this problem by using recently developed 10 GHz repetition-rate-tunable comb laser, combined with a group-velocity-matched nonlinear crystal and superconducting nanowire single photon detectors. They operate at telecom wavelengths more efficiently with less noises than conventional schemes, those typically operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths generated by a 76 MHz Ti Sapphire laser and detected by Si detectors. We could show high interference visibilities, which are free from the pump-power induced degradation. Our laser, nonlinear crystal and detectors constitute a powerful tool box, which will pave a way to implementing quantum photonics circuits with variety of good and low-cost telecom components and will eventually realize scalable Q-ICT in optical infra-structures.

Broadband light sources play essential roles in diverse fields, such as high-capacity optical communications, optical coherence tomography, optical spectroscopy and spectrograph calibration. Although a nonclassical state from spontaneous parametric down-conversion may serve as a quantum counterpart, its detection and characterization have been a challenging task. Here we demonstrate the direct detection of photon numbers of an ultrabroadband (110 nm FWHM) squeezed state in the telecom band centred at 1535 nm wavelength, using a superconducting transition-edge sensor. The observed photon-number distributions violate Klyshko's criterion for the nonclassicality. From the observed photon-number distribution, we evaluate the second- and third-order correlation functions and characterize a multimode structure, which implies that several tens of orthonormal modes of squeezing exist in the single optical pulse. Our results and techniques open up a new possibility to generate and characterize frequency-multiplexed nonclassical light sources for quantum info-communications technology.

We propose quantum receivers for 3- and 4-ary phase-shift-keyed (PSK) coherent state signals to overcome the standard quantum limit (SQL). Our receiver, consisting of a displacement operation and on-off detectors with or without feedforward, provides an error probability performance beyond the SQL. We show feedforward operations can tolerate the requirement for the detector specifications.

We propose quantum receivers with optical squeezing and photon-number-resolving detectors (PNRDs) for the near-optimal discrimination of quaternary phase-shift-keyed coherent state signals. The basic scheme is similar to the previous proposals [e.g., Izumi et al., Phys. Rev. A 86, 042328 (2012)] in which displacement operations, on-off detectors, and electrical feedforward operations were used. Here we study two types of receivers, one of which installs optical squeezings and the other uses PNRDs instead of on-off detectors. We show that both receivers can attain lower error rates than that in the previous scheme. In particular, we show the PNRD-based receiver has a significant gain when the ratio between the mean photon number of the signal and the number of the feedforward steps is relatively high, in other words, when the probability of detecting two or more photons at each detector is not negligible. Moreover, we show that the PNRD-based receiver can suppress the errors due to dark counts, which the receiver with the on-off detector cannot do with a small number of feedforwards.

Ultrabroadband photon-number-resolving detection is demonstrated for parametric fluorescence ranging over 150 nm in the telecom window, using a Ti transition edge sensor. Our results violate Klyshko's classical limit for even photon numbers.

The quantum receiver is an important tool for overcoming the standard quantum limit (SQL) of discrimination errors in optical communication. We theoretically study the quantum receivers for discriminating ternary and quaternary phase-shift-keying coherent states in terms of average error rate and mutual information. Our receiver consists of on-off--type photon detectors and displacement operations without electrical feedforward operations. We show that for the ternary signals, the receiver shows a reasonable gain from the SQL even without feedforward. This scheme is realizable with the currently available technology. For the quaternary signals feedforward operation is crucial to overcome the SQL with imperfect devices. We also analytically examine the asymptotic limit of the performance of the proposed receiver with respect to the number of feedforward steps.

Generalized quantum measurements identifying nonorthogonal states without ambiguity often play an indispensable role in various quantum applications. For such an unambiguous state-discrimination scenario, we have a finite probability of obtaining inconclusive results and minimizing the probability of inconclusive results is of particular importance. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate an adaptive generalized measurement that can unambiguously discriminate the quaternary phase-shift-keying coherent states with a near-optimal performance. Our scheme is composed of displacement operations, single-photon detections and adaptive control of the displacements dependent on a history of photon-detection outcomes. Our experimental results show a clear improvement of both a probability of conclusive results and a ratio of erroneous decision caused by unavoidable experimental imperfections over conventional static generalized measurements.POPULAR SUMMARYIn our everyday life, we are usually able to tell two similar but different things apart by choosing the right way of observing them. Even “identical” twins will have different personalities or perhaps birthmarks in different places. This is no longer the case when looking at quantum objects. Quantum states that are nonorthogonal, i.e., have a certain overlap, cannot be perfectly distinguished, no matter what measurement you attempt. This is a central property of quantum mechanics.Quantum state discrimination is the task of figuring out which quantum state you have at hand, typically out of a small set of candidates. When you cannot distinguish the states perfectly, you will need to decide what to give up on: You can give up trying to know for certain which state you have. Alternatively, you can give up trying to get a conclusive answer every time. Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, either of those strategies may be advantageous.In this work, we study the latter approach, unambiguous state discrimination in the technologically relevant context of distinguishing four very weak laser pulses with distinct phases. We introduce and demonstrate a measurement scheme, based on photon detection and fast feedback to the laser pulse, which significantly improves on the best existing schemes. We obtain near-optimal probabilities of obtaining a conclusive answer and low error probabilities. We expect that quantum key distribution as well as classical optical communication, which is ultimately limited by quantum noise, may benefit from our newly developed technique.
