Background/purpose: Appropriate oral health assessment and management can improve the oral health and nutritional status of hospitalized patients. The active participation of dental professionals in the nutritional support team (NST) can help achieve this outcome. However, the participation of dental professionals in NSTs is often limited, indicating the requirement for establishing a remote oral health assessment method. This study aimed to establish a multidisciplinary oral health assessment system using short video recordings with a tablet device. Materials and methods: Fifty inpatients receiving NST aid at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital were included in this study. The degree of agreement between the oral health assessment performed at the bedside and using the short video recordings of the oral health acquired with a tablet device by a single dentist and the degree of agreement for evaluations performed using the video recordings between multiple professionals were evaluated. The oral health status was assessed using the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT). Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of the OHAT total scores for oral health assessment performed at the bedside and using the videos by a single dentist was 0.914 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.854–0.950). ICCs of the OHAT total scores for the video assessment performed by dentists and multiple professionals were 0.904 (95% CI, 0.838–0.944) and 0.802 (95% CI, 0.676–0.883), respectively. Conclusion: Comprehensive oral health assessment of patients can be performed by multiple professionals using the short video recordings of the oral health acquired with a tablet device.

Background/purpose: Gum chewing has been found to improve oral function. Nevertheless, few randomized controlled trials have investigated the effects of gum-chewing exercises on oral function in older adults. This study aimed to examine the effect of gum-chewing exercises on oral function in older adults. Materials and methods: This was a single-blind, randomized controlled trial, conducted from November 2021 to January 2022. A total of 130 participants were divided randomly into the intervention and control groups. The intervention group was told to chew experimental gums for one month, while the control group was instructed to chew experimental tablets for one month. Maximum bite force, occlusal contact areas, oral dryness, tongue pressure, tongue and lip functions (number of times each of the following syllables is pronounced per second:/pa/,/ta/, and/ka/), masticatory function, subjective masticatory function, and gum-chewing time were measured at baseline and one month following intervention to assess outcomes. Background/purpose: Impaired masticatory performance results in nutritional deficiencies in older adults. This systematic review aims to investigate the following clinical question (CQ): Do occlusal supports impact nutritional intake or nutritional status in older individuals? Materials and methods: An extensive systematic literature search was performed to summarize the currently available knowledge to address the CQ. The cohort and intervention studies with participants of ≧60 years old or a mean age of 65 years performed before May 2021 were included. Studies were required to measure the parameters related to occluding tooth pairs/occlusal units and food/nutrient intake and/or nutritional status. Bias risk was assessed using the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Nonrandomized Studies. Results: After an independent screening of 1130 initial records, 24 reports from 22 studies were included. Participants (n = 8684) in the included studies were mainly residents of nursing homes or community-dwelling individuals. Following the assessment of bias risk, it is revealed that all studies had methodological weaknesses. Over half of the studies concluded that there was an association between occlusal support and nutritional intake or status. However, it was also revealed that various confounding factors are involved in the association between occlusal support and nutrition. Conclusion: This systematic review concludes that occlusal support might be associated with nutritional intake or nutritional status in the older population, although there are methodological limitations of each study. The evidence is still insufficient, and more well-designed studies are required.

Zirconia restorations are increasingly popular in dental treatment. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) needs to be sintered for clinical applications and novel speed-sintering protocols are being developed for chairside treatments. Whether the properties of speed-sintered YSZ meet clinical requirements, however, remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the influence of speed-sintering on the optical and mechanical properties of dental YSZ according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for relevant articles published between January 1, 2010 and February 28, 2022 in English, Chinese, or Japanese. Statement of problem: The effect of using the custom disk method (CDM) for fabricating digital dentures on patients’ masticatory function should be studied to support its use in clinical practice. Purpose: To investigate the effect of digital dentures fabricated using CDM on patients’ masticatory function. Material and methods: This single-center prospective clinical study included 20 patients with edentulous maxillary and mandibular arches who used a complete denture. The digital impression and complete denture manufacturing procedures using CDM have already been reported by Kanazawa et al. (2018) [32] and Soeda et al. (2022) [18] Thedigital dentures fabricated with CDM were delivered to the participants, and periodic adjustments were made until the patient could use the denture without pain. A color-changeable chewing gum, two types of gummy jellies that can evaluate the masticatory function, and pressure-sensitive sheets were used to evaluate the participants’ masticatory function at baseline, 1 month, and 6 months following adjustment of the new digital complete dentures fabricated with CDM. These masticatory function values had already been measured in the previous conventional dentures and were recorded as baseline values. Results: The study participants included 8 women and 12 men (mean age, 77.6 years). The color-changeable chewing gum analysis indicated that there was no significant improvement of masticatory function from baseline to 1 M (P = .083) and 6 M (P = .157).The gummy jelly analysis indicated no significant differences between the masticatory function baseline and 1 month (P = .387); however, a significant improvement was observed from baseline to 6 months (P = .020). Tests with Glucolum indicated a significant improvement from baseline to 1 month (P = .012) and 6 months (P = .003). The maximum bite force and occlusal contact area showed no significant difference at any time point. Conclusions: Significant improvement in masticatory function was observed upon evaluation with gummy jelly and Glucolum 6 months after delivering the new digital complete dentures. Under limited conditions, the digital denture fabricated using CDM resulted in good recovery of the masticatory function in elderly edentulous patients. The present results combined with the cost-effectiveness and patient satisfaction associated with CDM indicate its clinical utility.

This systematic review provides an update on the development and efficacy of direct restorative dental materials for root caries interventions from in vitro and clinical studies. PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched using specific MeSH keywords. Full articles from September 1990 to October 2021 were collected. Additional articles were identified by reference retrieval and manual searching. Studies not related to restorative materials for root caries treatment, case reports, non-original articles, and/or articles not written in English were excluded. Bias risk assessment was performed for the clinical studies. Forty-two articles (eleven clinical studies and thirty-one in vitro studies) were included for analysis. Most in vitro studies indicated an excellent cariostatic effect of glass ionomer cement. Resin-modified glass ionomer restorations also presented reduced recurrent caries activity but had a lower efficacy than glass ionomer cement restorations. For composite resin restorations, the main material development strategies are to strengthen the tooth structure and integrate antimicrobial activity. The clinical studies offered limited data, so the most appropriate material for surface root caries treatment is still inconclusive. However, atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) is an alternative treatment for patients with limiting conditions. Further clinical studies are required to confirm the efficacy of bioactive materials.

Background/purpose: Implant assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) improved biomechanical behavior of removable partial dentures (RPDs), but information of the effect of attachment type and implant position is limited. This study aimed to investigate the effect of implant position and attachment type on the stress distribution of IARPDs. Material and methods: Four implants, 10 mm in length and 4.1 mm in diameter, were bilaterally placed close to first premolar and second molar regions of a mandibular Kennedy class I model having artificial dentition from canine to canine, vertical to the occlusal plane. Five IARPDs were fabricated to accommodate locator and magnetic attachments. Strain gauges were placed on the model surface to measure the strain around implants during loading. Unilateral vertical loading was applied to the right first molar area with magnitude of 120 N and crosshead speed of 10 mm/min. Measurements were recorded under following conditions: premolar IARPDs with locator or magnetic attachments, molar IARPDs with locator or magnetic attachments. Two-way multiple analysis of variance was performed to compare the maximum principal strain (MPS) around the implants with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Implant position had significant effect on the MPS of IARPD on loading and nonloading sides while attachment type only significant on nonloading side. Molar implants showed larger MPS than premolar implants with both locator and magnetic attachments during unilateral loading. Conclusion: The stress distribution of the IARPD is significantly affected by implant position wherein anteriorly placed implants exhibit lower MPS than relatively posteriorly placed implants.

Abstract Background During restoration of poorly fitting complete dentures (CDs) in edentulous patients, liners are used to reconstruct the concave surfaces of CDs with a new base material. These relining materials are classified into resilient liners (RLs) and non-resilient liners (NRLs), but the clinical effects of these liners and their selection criteria remain unclear. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of relining mandibular CDs using RL and NRL and to conduct a follow-up study. Methods The study is currently being conducted at eight centers, and a parallel-group randomized controlled trial (RCT) is underway. One hundred thirty-two edentulous patients with poorly fitting mandibular CDs will be assigned to two groups based on whether they will receive RL or NRL. Participants will have an RL or NRL applied for relining their CDs using an indirect method of dynamic impressions. Data will be recorded at 1 week and 3, 6, and 12 months after denture delivery. The primary outcome will be assessment of the patients’ general satisfaction by using a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes will be measured as patient-reported outcomes, including food intake status and oral hygiene-related quality of life. Masticatory performance and the number of sore spots on the oral mucosa will also be recorded. Comparisons between the two groups and within-subject comparisons of pre- and post-intervention measurements will be conducted. Discussion For dentists and prosthetic researchers in Japan, this RCT will provide information on the clinical efficacy of RL materials in comparison to RNL in CD wearers. The new evidence regarding the use of RL materials in an aging population will also be useful to dentists in other countries in their routine clinical practice. Milling machines have made denture fabrication possible with high accuracy in a short time. However, the relationship between the milling conditions, accuracy, and milling duration has not been clarified. This study aimed to clarify the effects of milling conditions on surface roughness and milling duration. The specimen was designed using CAD software and milled using PMMA disks. In milling, the parameters of finishing the specimen surface were adjusted. Three different spindle speeds and four different feed rates were set. Twelve combinations of each parameter were used for milling, and the surface roughness and milling duration were measured. Results showed that the surface roughness significantly increased with the feed rate on the slopes of the specimen. The surface roughness differed with the spindle speed on the left and right slopes. The spindle speed and feed rate did not affect the surface roughness on the flat surface. The milling duration was not affected by the spindle speed but decreased as the feed rate increased. In conclusion, by increasing both the spindle speed and feed rate, the milling duration could be shortened while maintaining a constant surface quality. The optimum milling conditions were a spindle speed of 40,000 rpm and feed rate of 3500 mm/min.

The older adult population in Japan is expected to increase. Therefore, long-term care and frailty prevention are important. However, the relationship between masticatory performance, nutritional intake, and frailty remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine energy, protein, and vitamin D intake and its association with frailty and masticatory performance in older adults. Patients between January 2022 and January 2023 were recruited and divided into robust and frail groups. Masticatory performance, nutrition, frailty, and other data, such as age and sex, were evaluated through onsite measurements and a questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was conducted with frailty as a dependent variable and masticatory performance as an independent variable, adjusting for age, sex, skeletal muscle mass, living alone, energy intake, protein–energy ratio, and vitamin D intake. No significant differences were observed between the groups regarding age or sex. The robust group showed significantly better results for protein–energy ratio, vitamin D intake, and subjective and objective masticatory performance than the frail group. Logistic regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between skeletal muscle mass, protein–energy ratio, and objective masticatory performance with frailty. Masticatory performance was associated with frailty, independent of the intake of nutrients such as energy, protein, and vitamin D.

Comprehensive, long-term studies on patient-reported outcomes for two-implant overdentures with magnetic attachments using immediate or conventional loading methods are lacking. This study aimed to provide 5-year follow-up data comparing patient-reported outcomes for mandibular overdentures supported by two implants with magnetic attachments under immediate or conventional loading. Nineteen edentulous mandible patients were randomly assigned to immediate (IG) or conventional loading groups (CG). Two implants were placed with prostheses, loaded on the same day (immediate) or three months later (conventional). Participants completed questionnaires (oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), patient general satisfaction, and patient’s denture assessment (PDA)) at baseline and yearly intervals for 5 years. Results showed no significant differences between IG and CG throughout the study. However, the within-group analysis revealed significant improvements in OHRQoL, patient satisfaction, and all PDA domains from the baseline to years 1–5. Regarding patient satisfaction, significant differences were observed between T1, T2, and T3 when compared with T0 of IG and T1-T0 of CG. Regarding PDA results of T4-T5, IG exhibited several significant differences compared to CG. In conclusion, this study suggests that two-implant overdentures with magnetic attachments, whether immediately or conventionally loaded, improve patient-reported outcomes. Immediate loading may have prolonged effects on the improvement of patient-reported outcomes.

Background/purpose: Few studies have comprehensively assessed long-term patient-reported outcomes for overdentures supported by two immediate implants. The purpose of the study was to evaluate patient-reported outcomes of immediately loaded two-implant-supported overdentures retained by ball attachments over a 5-year evaluation period. Material and methods: Nineteen participants with edentulous mandibles were provided with immediately loaded two-unsplinted-implant-supported overdentures retained by ball attachments. The participants completed the Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-EDENT-19 and the Patient's Denture Assessment (PDA). Additionally, patient satisfaction was measured by a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS). Measurements were performed at baseline, and at 1 and 5 years following implant surgery. Results: Seventeen participants and 14 participants were evaluated at the 1-year and 5-year assessment, respectively. Considering the OHIP-EDENT-19, there was a significant decrease in the total (p = 0.046), “functional limitation” (p = 0.021), and “physical disability” (p = 0.034) scores at 1 year and the total (p = 0.045) and “physical disability” (p = 0.024) scores at 5 years following surgery, compared to the baseline scores. Considering the PDA, there was a significant increase in the “function” (p = 0.038) and “lower denture” (p = 0.003) scores at 1 year and the “function” (p = 0.032), “lower denture” (p = 0.008), and “esthetic and speech” (p = 0.043) scores at 5 years following surgery, compared to the baseline scores. Patient satisfaction at 1 year following surgery was significantly greater than that at baseline (p = 0.005). Conclusion: Immediately loaded two-unsplinted-implant-supported overdentures retained by ball attachments improved the oral health-related quality of life and self-assessment of dentures by the patients up to 5 years following implant surgery.

Background/purpose: No studies have comprehensively assessed short-term patient-reported outcomes after the provision of overdentures supported by two immediate implants. The purpose of this study was to evaluate short-term patient-reported outcomes for mandibular overdentures retained by ball attachments on two immediately loaded implants. Materials and methods: Nineteen participants with mandibular edentulism were provided with overdentures retained by ball attachments on two immediately loaded, unsplinted implants. The participants' self-assessment of their dentures and oral health-related quality of life were evaluated with the 22-item Patient's Denture Assessment (PDA), and the 19-item Japanese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-EDENT), respectively. Patient satisfaction was measured on a 100 mm visual analogue scale. Assessments were conducted at baseline, and at 1 and 6 months after implant surgery. Results: There were significant increases in the PDA “Lower denture” (P = 0.009) at 1 month, as well as “Function” (P = 0.002) and “Lower denture” (P = 0.009) scores at 6 months. Patient satisfaction was also significantly increased at 1 month (P = 0.007) and 6 months (P ≤ 0.000). Significant decreases were observed in the OHIP-EDENT “Physical pain” (P = 0.046) score at 1 month, as well as the summary score (P = 0.033), “Functional limitation” (P = 0.020) and “Psychological discomfort” (P = 0.019) scores at 6 months. Conclusion: The use of two immediately loaded implants for lower mandibular complete overdentures is associated with improvements in patient's self-assessment of dentures, satisfaction, and oral health-related quality of life, up to 6 months after implant surgery.

Abstract Background Previous research indicates that patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are more likely to have poor oral health and impairments in oral functions, which may be due to few remaining teeth and impaired tongue and lip motor function. However, the oral health of those patients following comprehensive cognitive assessment by a dementia specialist has not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the oral function of patients with MCI and the association between oral health and lower cognitive function. Methods This cross-sectional study included 96 participants (men: 35; women: 61; mean age: 73.3 ± 8.5 years) who visited a dementia clinic between December 2017 and January 2020. Participants’ cognitive function was assessed by a dementia specialist using neuropsychological and hematological tests and neuroimaging immediately after enrollment. The participants were divided into the healthy and MCI groups according to comprehensive cognitive assessment. Participants’ age, sex, body mass index, primary disease, education level, drinking habits, smoking habits, living environment, employment status, and exercise habits were evaluated. Moreover, oral outcomes, including the number of existing teeth, number of functional teeth (natural and prosthetic teeth which were occluded with antagonists), denture use, oral dryness, tongue and lip motor function, tongue pressure, occlusal force, masticatory ability, and swallowing ability were recorded. The Mann–Whitney U test, χ2, and Fisher’s exact tests were used for between-group comparisons. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis using MCI diagnosis as the target variable was performed. Results A comprehensive evaluation of the cognitive function of the study participants by the dementia specialist revealed that 48 participants (mean age: 69.8 ± 8.8 years) were healthy and 48 (mean age: 76.9 ± 6.7 years) had MCI. This 1-year multicenter prospective cohort study aimed to determine the association between observable eating and swallowing function factors and outcomes (death/hospitalization or survival) among elderly persons in long-term care insurance facilities in Japan. Baseline assessments of factors, such as language, drooling, halitosis, hypersalivation, tongue movement, perioral muscle function, coughing, respiration after swallowing, rinsing, and oral residue, among others, were conducted. A score of 0 was considered positive, and a score of 1 or 2 was considered negative. Patient age, sex, body mass index, Barthel index, and Clinical Dementia Rating were recorded. The death/hospitalization or survival rates over 1 year were recorded, and patients were allocated into groups depending on the respective outcome (death/hospitalization group or survival group) and baseline characteristics. A total of 986 residents from 32 facilities were included, with 216 in the death/hospitalization group and 770 in the survival group. Language, salivation, halitosis, perioral muscle, coughing, respiration after swallowing, rinsing, and oral residue were significantly associated with the outcomes (p < 0.05). Therefore, routine performance of these simple assessments by caregivers may allow early detection and treatment to prevent death, pneumonia, aspiration, and malnutrition in elderly persons.

Abstract Background The appropriate loading protocol to improve masticatory performance (MP) is still unclear in elderly patients and two-implant overdentures (2-IODs) wearers. This study aimed to compare the long-term MP and maximum occlusal force of immediate loading (IL) and conventional loading (CL) of 2-IODs retained by magnetic attachments. Nineteen edentulous patients were randomly assigned to either an IL (n=10) or CL group (n = 9). In the IL group, the implant was loaded on the same day as insertion, whereas it was loaded 3 months after insertion in the CL group. Magnetic attachments were used to retain all overdentures to the implants. MP, measured by a piece of color-changeable chewing gum and a gummy jelly test, and maximum occlusal force, measured using an occlusal force measuring device, were assessed in both groups at baseline and at 3-, 4-, and 5-year follow-ups. Results No significant differences were observed in the MP and the maximum occlusal force between the IL and CL groups at any time point. However, a significantly higher MP was observed at the 3-year time point in the IL group (P = 0.036). The maximum occlusal force revealed a significant correlation with MP, both with the color-changeable chewing gum and gummy jelly at 5 years. Conclusion After long-term observation, no significant differences in MP and maximum occlusal force were observed between the IL and CL groups. However, compared to pre-implant insertion of the complete denture, the MP in the IL group significantly improved at 3 years. New lines of evidence suggest that the oral-systemic medical links and oral hypo-function are progressively transcending beyond the traditional clinical signs and symptoms of oral diseases. Research into the dysbiotic microbiome, host immune/inflammatory regulations and patho-physiologic changes and subsequent adaptations through the oral-systemic measures under ageism points to pathways leading to mastication deficiency, dysphagia, signature brain activities for (neuro)-cognition circuitries, dementia and certain cancers of the digestive system as well. Therefore, the coming era of oral health-linked systemic disorders will likely reshape the future of diagnostics in oral geriatrics, treatment modalities and professional therapies in clinical disciplines. In parallel to these highlights, a recent international symposium was jointly held by the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG), Japanese Society of Gerodontology (JSG), the representative of USA and Taiwan Academy of Geriatric Dentistry (TAGD) on Oct 25th, 2019. Herein, specific notes are briefly addressed and updated for a summative prospective from this symposium and the recent literature.

Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS), caused by the accumulation of visceral fat, is considered a major cause of cardiovascular disease. This randomized controlled trial aimed to clarify the effect of dental intervention, including prosthodontics and/or periodontal treatment, combined with dietary and exercise guidance on MetS. Methods In total, 112 patients who met the Japanese waist circumference criteria of MetS were recruited. The intervention group (ITG) received dental intervention along with dietary and exercise guidance, while the control group (CTG) received dietary and exercise guidance alone. Three outcome measurements were obtained before intervention (BL), 1 month after intervention (1M), and 3 months after intervention (3M). Results Body water rate (p = 0.043) was significantly higher in ITG than in CTG at 1M. Simultaneously, fasting blood sugar level (p = 0.098) tended to be lower in ITG than in CTG. Lean mass (p = 0.037) and muscle mass (p = 0.035) were significantly higher and body weight (p = 0.044) significantly lower in ITG than in CTG at 3M. Body mass index (p = 0.052) tended to be lower in ITG than in CTG. Conclusions Dental intervention combined with lifestyle guidance may improve anthropometric status and reduce the risk of MetS. Abstract Background An increase in the number of elderly edentulous patients likely leads to a greater demand for dentures and denture adhesives. As denture adhesives have both positive and negative features, dentists need to know the types of denture adhesive users to be able to provide instruction to denture wearers on how to use denture adhesives effectively. This study aims to examine the utilization of denture adhesives and associated factors. Methods Seven closed-ended questionnaires were developed for a web-based survey. After that, Fisher’s exact tests were performed to determine the difference in the denture adhesive usage rate by gender, type of denture, last dental visit, and smoking status. A multivariate-adjusted logistic regression analysis was performed with denture adhesive use or non-use as the dependent variable and the other items as independent variables. Next, Fisher’s exact tests and a multivariate-adjusted logistic regression analysis were performed with the type of denture adhesives as the dependent variable in the same way. Statistical analyses were performed for all denture wearers, complete denture wearers, and partial denture wearers. The level of statistical significance was set at p = 0.05. Results A total of 1470 denture wearers in Japan participated in this study. Of these, 318 used denture adhesives, while 212 (66.7%) used cream; 74 (23.3%) used home liner; 25 (7.9%) used powder; four (1.3%) used sheets; and three (0.9%) used several types. Background. A full-time dentist was assigned to a ward at our hospital to improve the quality of oral healthcare for hospitalized patients. A dental care system (DCS) was created to facilitate the collaboration between the full-time dentist and the nursing department. Objective. To investigate the effects of DCS implementation on the incidence of pneumonia in patients with acute stroke. Methods. This retrospective cohort study comprised 945 hospitalized acute stroke patients categorized into three groups: pre-, during-, and post-DCS. The DCS comprised dentist-led lectures and practical sessions, oral assessments, standardized oral care techniques, and information on the procedures for nurse-requested dental intervention. Data were extracted from the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database and medical records. The attributes of the patients, incidence of pneumonia, and number of patients who requested dental intervention were determined. Results. The odds ratios of pneumonia onset were 3.16 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.65–6.05; P=0.001) in the pre-DCS and 2.80 (95% CI, 1.48–5.31; P=0.002) in the during-DCS group compared with the post-DCS group, thereby confirming the effect of DCS on the incidence of pneumonia. The number of dental requests in the post-DCS group was noted to be higher than that in the pre-DCS group (P=0.002). Conclusion. Oral management by a full-time dentist was found to be effective in reducing the incidence of pneumonia in patients with acute stroke. To implement the best oral care practices in the hospital wards, the full-time dentist should work as a member of the medical team.

Zirconia ceramics have been widely used in dentistry. Herein, we assess the surface morphology, surface texture, and osteoblast response of additively manufactured zirconia and alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) in comparison with titanium. The surface roughness, contact angle, and surface microstructure of titanium sandblasted with large-grit alumina and subsequently acid-etched using 18% HCl and 49% H2SO4 (SLA-titanium), uniaxially pressed zirconia (UP zirconia), additively manufactured zirconia (AM zirconia), and additively manufactured ATZ (AM ATZ) were investigated. Moreover, the cell viability, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and gene expression of type I collagen on these materials were evaluated. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA with Tukey’s post hoc test. SLA-titanium showed the highest surface roughness and contact angle. The other three materials showed comparable surface roughness and contact angles. Micro- and nanoroughness were observed on the surface of SLA-titanium. UP zirconia and AM zirconia had similar surface morphologies. The cell viability, ALP activity, and gene expression of type I collagen on AM zirconia were comparable to or better than those on SLA-titanium. Our results indicate that AM zirconia is a promising material for zirconia dental implants.

Three cases of mandibular implant overdentures (IODs) were measured for retention by a developed model. A nylon thread was tied through a hole at the midline of the IOD and seated it in the patient's mouth properly. Briefly, a facebow was set on the patient, with its arms firmly held by an assistant. The other end of the thread was tied into a loop, and the thread was inserted through a hole at the Camper's line of the facebow and hooked onto a portable force gauge. The thread was then pulled in parallel with the arms of the facebow by the force gauge until the prosthesis dislodged while the patient opened his mouth. Denture retention was measured five times, and the mean was calculated. Appropriate analysis for validity and reliability of the model was performed, and statistical results showed that it was valid and reliable for measuring the retention of removable mandibular prostheses.

All-ceramic restorations have become increasingly popular in dentistry. Toward ensuring that these restorations adhere to the tooth structure, this study determines the optimal femtosecond laser (FL) treatment parameters for lithium disilicate glass-ceramics and highly translucent zirconia ceramics with respect to surface morphology. For both the ceramics, the following surface conditions were investigated: (1) as-sintered; (2) Al2O3 sandblasted; (3) FL treatment (dot pattern with line distances of 14, 20, and 40 µm); (4) FL treatment (crossed-line pattern with a line distance of 20 and 40 µm). Surface roughness parameters were estimated using a 3D confocal laser microscope; microstructures were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. Peak fluence (Fpeak) values of 4 and 8 J/cm2 and irradiation numbers (N) of 20 and 10 shots were selected to create dot patterns in highly translucent zirconia and lithium disilicate glass-ceramics, respectively. Furthermore, Fpeak = 8 J/cm2 and N = 20 shots were chosen to obtain crossed-line patterns in both ceramics. Our results show that lithium disilicate glass-ceramics and highly translucent zirconia exhibit a similar surface morphology under each of the surface treatment conditions. Therefore, FL irradiation of dot or crossed-line patterns (at a distance of 20 and 40 µm) are potential candidates for future investigations.

Summary: In our aging society, the number of patients with dysphagia, which is associated with disease and aging, is rapidly increasing. The swallowing reflex is a complex process that involves coordinated contractions of swallowing muscles. Many researchers have reported that age-related changes, such as frailty and sarcopenia, affect swallowing muscles and contribute to the decline in the swallowing function. Thus, simple, non-invasive evaluation methods and exercises for swallowing muscles in elderly patients with dysphagia are important.Anterior–superior hyolaryngeal elevation during swallowing results from contractions of the suprahyoid muscle, which plays a primary role in opening the upper esophageal sphincter, along with relaxation of the cricopharyngeal muscle and laryngeal closure. Thus, many researchers have studied methods for evaluating and augmenting suprahyoid muscles. On the other hand, some researchers have reported on dysphagia rehabilitation focused on jaw-opening actions, because hyolaryngeal elevation muscles correspond with jaw-opening muscles. In this study, we describe a new dysphagia evaluation method and an exercise that focuses on suprahyoid muscles with application of jaw-opening actions. Photopolymer resins are widely used in the production of dental prostheses, but their mechanical properties require improvement. We evaluated the effects of different zirconia filler contents and printing directions on the mechanical properties of photopolymer resin. Three-dimensional (3D) printing was used to fabricate specimens using composite photopolymers with 0 (control), 3, 5, and 10 wt.% zirconia filler. Two printing directions for fabricating rectangular specimens (25 mm × 2 mm × 2 mm) and disk-shaped specimens (φ10 mm × 2 mm) were used, 0° and 90°. Three-point bending tests were performed to determine the flexural strengths and moduli of the specimens. The Vickers hardness test was performed to determine the hardness of the specimens. Tukey’s multiple comparison tests were performed on the average values of the flexural strengths, elastic moduli, and Vickers hardness after one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). The flexural strengths and elastic moduli at 0° from high to low were in the order of 0, 3, 10, and 5 wt.%, and those at 90° were in the order of 3, 0, 10, and 5 wt.% (p < 0.05). For 5 and 10 wt.%, no significant differences were observed in mechanical properties at 0° and 90° (p < 0.05). The Vickers hardness values at 0° and 90° from low to high were in the order of 0, 3, 5, and 10 wt.% (p < 0.05). Within the limits of this study, the optimal zirconia filler content in the photopolymer resin for 3D printing was 0 wt.% at 0° and 3 wt.% at 90°.

Abstract Background To investigate Locker’s multidimensional model of oral health in Japanese edentulous patients with an item weighting method using factor score weights, which is more accurate than the sum scoring method. A previous study tested Locker’s model in edentulous elders in the UK, using empirical evidence from the Short-Form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Investigating the model using the OHIP for edentulous subjects (OHIP-EDENT), which contains 19 items suitable for these patients, may complement that study. Testing Locker’s model in Japanese patients may support generalization of the model. Methods A total of 394 patients who were edentulous in both arches and visited the Dental Hospital of Tokyo Medical and Dental University for new complete dentures were recruited. This cross-sectional study had a non-probabilistic sampling design and included the following: data collection; application of the new item weighting method that involves hierarchical confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to derive factor score weights for each item, using the bootstrap method, to check the significance of the factor score weights; and empirical testing of Locker’s conceptual model of oral health in Japanese edentulous patients, using structural equation modelling analysis with the bootstrap method for precise estimations and model generation. Results Factor score weights derived from CFA were significant. After item weighting, the initial model was analyzed and found to have an inconsistent direct path (functional limitation to disability). This path was eliminated from the model and the modified model was re-run. All effects were significant. The model showed acceptable fit on indices including the model chi-squared, standardized root-mean-square residual, root mean-square error of approximation, goodness-of-fit index, comparative fit index, and P-value. Conclusions Our findings showed an empirical fit to Locker’s model in Japanese edentulous patients when using the item weighting method, which was more accurate than the sum scoring method. These results could contribute to the generalization of Locker’s model. Abstract Background Previous studies have reported a relationship between masseter muscle thickness and tooth loss or limb muscle thickness. However, it is not yet known whether masseter muscle thickness is related to appendicular skeletal muscle mass, and grip strength. The purpose of this study was to determine which of the two variables—tooth loss or appendicular skeletal muscle mass index—is more strongly related to masseter muscle thickness, and to identify a suitable indicator of decreasing masseter muscle thickness in healthy elderly individuals. Methods Grip strength, walking speed, body weight, skeletal muscle mass index, tooth loss, and masseter muscle thickness at rest and during contraction were determined in 97 community-dwelling elderly individuals aged ≥65 years (men: 44, women: 53). Masseter muscle thickness was chosen as the dependent variable, while age, skeletal muscle mass index, body weight, grip strength, and tooth loss were chosen as the independent variables. Multiple regression analysis was conducted using the stepwise regression method. Results In men, grip strength was the only independent predictor of masseter muscle thickness at rest. Tooth loss and grip strength were independent predictor of masseter muscle thickness during contraction. In women, tooth loss was the independent predictor of masseter muscle thickness both at rest and during contraction, while grip strength and body weight were the independent predictor of masseter muscle thickness at rest only. Conclusions We confirmed that in healthy elderly individuals, tooth loss has a stronger relationship with masseter muscle thickness than aging and skeletal muscle mass index do. Masseter muscle thickness in both elderly men and women is also associated with grip strength, suggesting that grip strength can be used as an indicator of masseter muscle thickness in this population.

We aimed to evaluate the properties of a novel tissue conditioner containing a surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) nanofiller. Tissue conditioners containing 0 (control), 2.5, 5, 10, 20, or 30 wt% S-PRG nanofiller or 10 or 20 wt% S-PRG microfiller were prepared. The S-PRG nanofillers and microfillers were observed using scanning electron microscopy. The ion release, acid buffering capacity, detail reproduction, consistency, Shore A0 hardness, surface roughness, and Candida albicans adhesion of the tissue conditioners were examined. The results indicated that the nanofiller particles were smaller and more homogeneous in size than the microfiller particles. In addition, Al, B, F, and Sr ions eluted from S-PRG were generally found to decrease after 1 day. Acid neutralization was confirmed in a concentration-dependent manner. The mechanical properties of tissue conditioners containing S-PRG nanofiller were clinically acceptable according to ISO standard 10139-1:2018, although the surface roughness increased with increasing filler content. Conditioners with 5–30 wt% nanofiller had a sublethal effect on C. albicans and reduced fungal adhesion in vitro. In summary, tissue conditioner containing at least 5 wt% S-PRG nanofiller can reduce C. albicans adhesion and has potential as an alternative soft lining material.

Many patients with an edentulous mandible struggle to use complete dentures. The instability of such dentures caused by the lack of retention, often causes discomfort, as well as functional and psychosocial problems, which can be signifcantly improved using implant overdentures with retentive attachments. This case report describes a successful case of a mandibular implant overdenture using two mini implants and magnetic attachments for an elderly edentulous patient. Case Report: A 62-year-old female with a thin mandibular bone ridge presented with complaints of pain caused by an unstable and unretentive complete mandibular denture. This patient received two mini implants (diameter: 2.6 mm; length: 12 mm) with magnetic attachments. After three months, magnetic assemblies with magnetic attraction of 400 gf were incorporated into the intaglio surface of her mandibular overdenture. At 11 months, magnetic attraction was changed from 400 gf to 600 gf to provide a stronger magnetic force for improving the retention of this denture. Conclusion: Based on a two-year follow-up period, the mandibular two mini implants overdenture with magnetic attachments was successful in improving the patient’s general satisfaction with her dentures

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different practical training models on the comprehension and evaluation of practical training among dental students. Methods The study subjects were all sixth-year dental students at our institute, and the study took place over three consecutive years (n = 58, 63, and 65, respectively). In practical training, all students learned border molding, and practical models were modified each year from plaster models to silicone models and then to silicone models mounted in mannequins. Immediately after completing clinical training, all students were asked to complete questionnaires consisting of 21 items regarding their overall practical training and their clinical comprehension of border molding. All items were rated on a five-point Likert scale, and in order to reduce the large number of interrelated questions, exploratory factor analysis was carried out using maximum likelihood estimation with promax rotation (κ = 4) and Kaiser normalization. The number of factors was chosen using the Kaiser-Guttman rule, which states that the eigenvalue should be larger than 1, and the scree plot criteria. Items that scored less than 0.25 in communality and exhibited factor loading greater than 0.35 for more than one item were excluded. The defined factors were analyzed for the plaster models, the silicone models alone, and the silicone models with mannequins using the Kruskal-Wallis test and follow-up tests using Bonferroni-corrected Mann-Whitney U tests. We aimed to assess the crystallography, microstructure and flexural strength of zirconia-based ceramics made by stereolithography (SLA). Two additively manufactured 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP: LithaCon 3Y 230, Lithoz; 3D Mix zirconia, 3DCeram Sinto) and one alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ: 3D Mix ATZ, 3DCeram Sinto) were compared to subtractively manufactured 3Y-TZP (control: LAVA Plus, 3M Oral Care). Crystallographic analysis was conducted by X-ray diffraction. Top surfaces and cross-sections of the subsurface microstructure were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Biaxial flexural strength was statistically compared using Weibull analysis. The additively and subtractively manufactured zirconia grades revealed a similar phase composition. The residual porosity of the SLA 3Y-TZPs and ATZ was comparable to that of subtractively manufactured 3Y-TZP. Weibull analysis revealed that the additively manufactured LithaCon 3Y 230 (Lithoz) had a significantly lower biaxial flexural strength than 3D Mix ATZ (3D Ceram Sinto). The biaxial flexural strength of the subtractively manufactured LAVA Plus (3M Oral Care) was in between those of the additively manufactured 3Y-TZPs, with the additively manufactured ATZ significantly outperforming the subtractively manufactured 3Y-TZP. Additively manufactured 3Y-TZP showed comparable crystallography, microstructure and flexural strength as the subtractively manufactured zirconia, thus potentially being a good option for dental implants.

In this study, the physical properties of a custom block manufactured using a self-polymerizing resin (Custom-block), the commercially available CAD/CAM PMMA disk (PMMA-disk), and a heat-polymerizing resin (Conventional PMMA) were evaluated via three different tests. The Custom-block was polymerized by pouring the self-polymerizing resin into a special tray, and Conventional PMMA was polymerized with a heat-curing method, according to the manufacturer’s recommended procedure. The specimens of each group were subjected to three-point bending, water sorption and solubility, and staining tests. The results showed that the materials met the requirements of the ISO standards in all tests, except for the staining tests. The highest flexural strength was exhibited by the PMMA-disk, followed by the Custom-block and the Conventional PMMA, and a significant difference was observed in the flexural strengths of all the materials (p < 0.001). The Custom-block showed a significantly higher flexural modulus and water solubility. The water sorption and discoloration of the Custom-block were significantly higher than those of the PMMA-disk, but not significantly different from those of the Conventional PMMA. In conclusion, the mechanical properties of the three materials differed depending on the manufacturing method, which considerably affected their flexural strength, flexural modulus, water sorption and solubility, and discoloration.

With rapid aging of the world's population, the demand for research, for a better understanding of aging and aging-related disorders, is increasing. Ideally, such research should be conducted on human subjects. However, due to ethical considerations, animals such as rodents and monkeys are used as alternatives. Among these alternative models, non-human primates are preferred because of their similarities with humans. The small South American common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) may offer several advantages over other non-human primates in terms of its smaller size, shorter life-span, and dental anatomy identical to humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the viability of using the marmoset as a human oral disease model. We collected saliva samples from eight marmosets and eight human subjects. Prokaryotic DNA was extracted from the saliva samples, and 16S bacterial rRNA gene sequencing was performed on each of the samples. Our results indicated that the types of oral microbiomes detected among human and marmoset samples were nearly indistinguishable. In contrast, the oral microbiomes of our human and marmoset subjects were distinctly different from those reported for rats and dogs, which are currently popular research animals. The oral microbiomes of marmosets showed greater diversity than those of humans. However, the oral microbiota of marmosets exhibited less variation than those of humans, which may be attributed to the fact that the marmoset subjects were kept in a controlled environment with identical lifestyles. The characteristics of its oral microbiota, combined with other technical advantages, suggest that the marmoset may provide the best animal model thus far for the study of oral health. This study characterized the oral microbes of the marmoset, thereby providing information to support future application of the marmoset as a model for age-related oral disease.

This study evaluated the effects of the differences in the printing directions of stereolithography (SLA) three-dimensional (3D)-printed dentures on accuracy (trueness and precision). The maxillary denture was designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software with an STL file (master data) as the output. Three different printing directions (0°, 45°, and 90°) were used. Photopolymer resin was 3D-printed (n = 6/group). After scanning all dentures, the scanning data were saved/output as STL files (experimental data). For trueness, the experimental data were superimposed on the master data sets. For precision, the experimental data were selected from six dentures with three different printing directions and superimposed. The root mean square error (RMSE) and color map data were obtained using a deviation analysis. The averages of the RMSE values of trueness and precision at 0°, 45°, and 90° were statistically compared. The RMSE of trueness and precision were lowest at 45°, followed by 90°; the highest occurred at 0°. The RMSE of trueness and precision were significantly different among all printing directions (p < 0.05). The highest trueness and precision and the most favorable surface adaptation occurred when the printing direction was 45°; therefore, this may be the most effective direction for manufacturing SLA 3D-printed dentures.

A cross-modal association between somatosensory tactile sensation and parietal and occipital activities during Braille reading was initially discovered in tests with blind subjects, with sighted and blindfolded healthy subjects used as controls. However, the neural background of oral stereognosis remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated whether the parietal and occipital cortices are activated during shape discrimination by the mouth using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Following presentation of the test piece shape, a sham discrimination trial without the test pieces induced posterior parietal lobe (BA7), extrastriate cortex (BA18, BA19), and striate cortex (BA17) activation as compared with the rest session, while shape discrimination of the test pieces markedly activated those areas as compared with the rest session. Furthermore, shape discrimination of the test pieces specifically activated the posterior parietal cortex (precuneus/BA7), extrastriate cortex (BA18, 19), and striate cortex (BA17), as compared with sham sessions without a test piece. We concluded that oral tactile sensation is recognized through tactile/visual cross-modal substrates in the parietal and occipital cortices during shape discrimination by the mouth.

Highly polished 3, 4, and 5 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia and CAD/CAM composite resin samples were prepared, and the influence of surface roughness (Ra and Sa, 21 areas/group), wettability (contact angle and surface energy, 3 samples/group), and surface chemical composition (2 samples/group) on single-strain bacterial adhesion models (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus gordonii, and Streptococcus mutans) were compared via fluorescent staining with graphical analysis (21 areas/group). Statistical analysis was performed using the Shapiro–Wilk test followed by one-way analysis of variance with Tukey’s test or the Kruskal–Wallis test with Dunn’s test (α=0.05) and linear regression. For dental zirconia with the same surface roughness, the yttria content did not significantly influence the initial bacterial adhesion. However, higher bacterial adhesion was detected for the composite resin owing to its high C, O, and Si contents. Aim: This cross-sectional study had two aims: to assess the prevalence of oral frailty (OF), according to the Oral Frailty 5-Item Checklist (OF-5), among community-dwelling older adults; and to examine the associations among oral frailty, dietary variety, social engagement, and physical frailty. Methods: We pooled data from two population-based studies (the Otassha Study and the Itabashi Longitudinal Study on Aging). With the OF-5, OF is characterized by the presence of two or more of the following: (i) fewer teeth, (ii) difficulty in chewing, (iii) difficulty in swallowing, (iv) dry mouth, and (v) low articulatory oral motor skills. We calculated the OF prevalence for each sex. We assessed dietary variety, social engagement, and physical frailty. Generalized structural equation modeling was employed to investigate the associations among oral frailty, low dietary variety (dietary variety score =3), social isolation (Lubben Social Network Scale score <12), and physical frailty (Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study score =3). Results: A total of 1206 individuals (626 women and 580 men) with a mean age of 74.7 years were included. The prevalence of OF was 36.7%, and it increased with age; however, there was no significant sex difference. OF was significantly indirectly associated with physical frailty via low dietary variety (odds ratio, 1.43; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.97) and social isolation (odds ratio, 1.42; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.94). Conclusions: Two of five community-dwelling older adults exhibited OF. Low dietary variety and social isolation are potential underlying mechanisms through which OF is indirectly associated with physical frailty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to clarify the effects of multiple firings on the translucency, crystal structure, and mechanical strength of highly translucent zirconia. Four types of highly translucent zirconia (LAVA Esthetic, LAVA Plus, KATANA Zirconia STML, and KATANA Zirconia HTML) were fired three times at three different temperatures, and the translucency, crystal structure, and flexural strength were evaluated before and after firing. The translucency was statistically compared using repeated-measures analysis of variance; the zirconia phase composition was assessed using X-ray diffraction followed by Rietveld analysis; and the biaxial flexural strength was assessed using Weibull analysis. The translucency of LAVA Esthetic and KATANA Zirconia HTML decreased significantly after firing, and the crystal composition of LAVA Plus and KATANA Zirconia HTML changed after multiple firings, whereas multiple firings did not affect the biaxial flexural strength of any samples. In this study, we investigated the effects of surface treatment on the fracture strength of porcelain-veneered zirconia. Highly translucent 4 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia disks (KATANA HT, Kuraray Noritake Dental) were divided into three surface-treatment groups: 1) as-sintered, 2) alumina sandblasted, and 3) ground. Crystallographic and surface-roughness analyses were conducted for each group. Veneering ceramics (Cerabien ZR, Kuraray Noritake Dental) were applied to the zirconia surfaces. The fracture strengths of the porcelain-veneered zirconia disks were measured using biaxial flexural-strength tests. Crystallographic analysis revealed that grinding and sandblasting increased the fractions of the monoclinic and rhombohedral zirconia phases. The ground specimens had a higher surface roughness than the sandblasted specimens. Weibull analysis showed no significant differences in biaxial flexural strength among the three groups. The results suggest that these surface treatments do not affect the fracture strength of porcelainveneered zirconia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This technical procedure report explains the fabrication protocol for a newly developed 4D-printed sports mouthguard (MG) based on 4D-printing technology. Methods: An intraoral scanner was used to scan a maxillary arch model. A two-layer sports MG was designed based on the scanned model using computer-aided design software and output in a standard tessellation language file format. Two types of filament materials were used for the MG material: a thermoplastic shape memory polyurethane elastomer with a unique glass transition temperature for the external layer and a thermoplastic elastomer for the internal layer. Both MGs were printed using a fused deposition modeling 3D printer and assembled using adhesives after trimming the support material. To confirm the shape-memory performance of the fabricated 4D-printed MG, a deviation analysis was performed by superimposing the internal surface data of the fabricated MG and the MG whose shape was recovered. The distance between the data obtained by deviation analysis was calculated, and the root mean square error value (mm) was determined. Conclusions: The 4D-printing technology simplifies the complex processes required with conventional methods. It also overcomes the issues of conventional and 3D-printed MGs, such as the reduced fitting accuracy caused by deformation, because this technology employs shape memory materials. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of denture adhesives on masticatory performance via a 10-center, parallel, randomized, controlled trial of complete denture wearers in Japan. Methods: The trial was conducted between September 2013 and October 2016. The inclusion criteria were complete edentulism, willingness to undergo new complete denture treatment, and willingness to return for recall treatment. The exclusion criteria were age 90 years or older, presence of severe systemic illness, inability to understand the questionnaires, wearing metal base complete dentures, denture adhesive user, wearing prosthetics for maxillofacial defects, wearing complete dentures with tissue conditioners, and severe xerostomia. Randomization of the powder-type denture adhesive (powder), cream-type denture adhesive (cream), and control (saline) groups was performed using a sealed envelope system. Masticatory performance was measured using color-changeable chewing gum. Intervention blinding was not feasible. Results: Sixty-seven control, 69 powder, and 64 cream participants are analyzed using the intention-to-treat principle. The participants in all groups show significantly improved masticatory performance at post-intervention (paired t-test with Bonferroni correction P < 0.0001). However, no significant difference in masticatory performance is detected among the three groups (one-way analysis of variance). A significant negative correlation between pre- and post-changes in masticatory performance and intraoral condition scores is observed (Pearson's correlation coefficient, P < 0.0001). Conclusions: Although denture adhesives improved the masticatory performance of complete denture wearers, their clinical effects are comparable to those of saline solution. Purpose: Additive manufacturing has revolutionized the fabrication of complete dentures. However, this process involves support structure, which is a construction part that holds the specimen during printing, and may prove to be disadvantageous. Therefore, this in vitro study compared the effect of support structure reduction on various volume and area distributions of a 3D-printed denture base to determine optimal parameters based on accuracy. Methods: A complete maxillary denture base construction file was used as reference. Twenty denture bases were 3D printed under four conditions (total n=80): no support structure reduction (control), palatal support structure reduction (Condition P), border support structure reduction (Condition B), and palatal and border support structure reduction (Condition PB). Printing time and resin consumption were also recorded. The intaglio surface trueness and precision of all acquired data were exported to a 3D analysis software, and the dimensional changes to the denture base were analyzed using the root-mean-square estimate (RMSE) to assess geometric accuracy and generate color map patterns. Nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Steel-Dwass tests (a=0.05) analyzed the accumulated data. Results: Control had the lowest RMSE values for trueness and precision. Nevertheless, it demonstrated a significantly lower RMSE than that of Condition B (P=0.02) in precision. Owing to negative deviation at the palatal region, Conditions P and PB had higher retention than Control and Condition B regarding the color map pattern. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, the reduction of palatal and border support structures showed optimal accuracy with resource and cost savings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PURPOSE. This study aimed to predict the positional coordinates of incisor points from the scan data of conventional complete dentures and verify their accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The standard triangulated language (STL) data of the scanned 100 pairs of complete upper and lower dentures were imported into the computer-aided design software from which the position coordinates of the points corresponding to each landmark of the jaw were obtained. The x, y, and z coordinates of the incisor point (XP, YP, and ZP) were obtained from the maxillary and mandibular landmark coordinates using regression or calculation formulas, and the accuracy was verified to determine the deviation between the measured and predicted coordinate values. YP was obtained in two ways using the hamular-incisive-papilla plane (HIP) and facial measurements. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict ZP. The root mean squared error (RMSE) values were used to verify the accuracy of the XP and YP. The RMSE value was obtained after cross-validation using the remaining 30 cases of denture STL data to verify the accuracy of ZP. RESULTS. The RMSE was 2.22 for predicting XP. When predicting YP, the RMSE of the method using the HIP plane and facial measurements was 3.18 and 0.73, respectively. Cross-validation revealed the RMSE to be 1.53. CONCLUSION. YP and ZP could be predicted from anatomical landmarks of the maxillary and mandibular edentulous jaw, suggesting that YP could be predicted with better accuracy with the addition of the position of the lower border of the upper lip. Traditionally, simulation studies in dentistry have relied on the finite element method (FEM). However, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, which represents objects as particle collections without the use of meshes, has gained recent attention. Despite its application in dentistry, there is currently a lack of comprehensive literature summarizing the specific applications of the SPH method in the oral region. This review aims to provide a summary of studies that have utilized the SPH method in dentistry, focusing on its applications in analyzing large deformations, such as dental ceramic collisions, soft material analysis (e.g., denture adhesive), and virtual training simulations for dental treatments. By combining the advantages of the SPH and FEM methods, more accurate simulations can be achieved, and further applications of the SPH method in dentistry are anticipated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
