To establish a qualitative diagnosis of submandibular gland disease, internal echo levels of 97 submandibular glands were measured under constant conditions by ultrasonography, and the influence of aging, fibrous changes, and adipose tissue content were investigated.Although there were no sex-related differences in the internal echo levels of 88 healthy glands, there was a trend toward an increased internal echo level with aging.Histopathologically, 20 glands required extirpation for treatment, and the adipose tissue ratio in these glands was measured.In 11 glands without fibrous changes, the adipose tissue ratio correlated with the internal echo level. In 9 glands with fibrous changes, there was no correlation between these variables, and the average internal echo level was significantly lower than that of the glands without fibrous changes (P

The patient, 67-year-old female, was found to have a cervical lymph node metastasis after 12-year radiation therapy for the tongue cancer (T2N0M0, squamous cell carcinoma). Histological grading of malignancy (Jakobsson, 1973) of the primary tumor was a moderate type with marked cellular response. Radical neck dissection was performed and examined histologically. Metastasis was observed only in one lymph node and the paracorcical area of the lymph node revealed hypertrophy.The patient has been followed for 1 year postoperatively. She is now free of the disease. A possible factor in the patient with a long-delayed metastasis is considered to he an “abscopal effect” following radiation therapy for the primary tumor using a radium needle (76.4Gy/168 hr.).Additionally, late development of metastases of oral squamous cell carcinoma are discussed on the basis of data from our series.

Temporomandibular arthrosis is caused by various etiologic factors, including muscular dysfunction, disorder of articulardisk, bony changes of the temporomandibular joint and other psycological factors. It is difficult to diagnose and treat this arthrosis without classifying these etiologic types. Recently, clinical classification of the temporomandibular arthrosis was established.So, we attempted to classify our patients with temporomandibular arthrosis by this classification, and studied the effect of a muscle relaxant (eperisone hydrochloride: Myonal®) in these classified patient groups. It was revealed that Myonal was effective for patients with type I arthrosis with a significant improvement rate.

Lipoma is a benign tumor derived from nonepithelial origin and may occur almost anywhere on the body. In the oral cavity, however, lipoma is a relatively rare tumor.In this report, 30 cases of lipomas treated in our department during past 24 years are reviewed.1) The incidence of lipoma in our department is 4.1% of all benign tumor. Salivary gland tumors and epulis are excluded in this report.2) 16 patients were male and 14 female.3) Age ranged from 47-day-old baby to an 82-year-old man; mean age was 47.9 years.4) 11 cases were in the buccal mucosa, 4 in the mucogingival junction, 3 in the retromolar pad, 3 in the tongue, etc.5) Tumor size ranged fron 5×5mm to 50×50×40mm in the oral cavity, and from 25×25mm to 80×50mm out of the oral cavity.6) 24 tumors were histologically diagnosed as lipoma, 5 as fibrolipoma, and 1 as angiomyolipoma.

Effects of local single irradiation on lung metastasis of VX2 carcinoma transplanted in maxillary sinus of rabbits were evaluated. When an inadequate irradiation for complete regression was given, the rate of pulmonary metastases in irradiated groups was remarkably increased compared with non-irradiated one, although tumor growths in irradiated ones were apt to be inhibited corresponding to the given dose. Three parameters detected in the study related to general conditions were not so significantly different among the groups although those in irradiated groups were apt to be worse than those in control. Histologically most remarkable difference between in control and irradiated groups was stromal respose. However, on the question of whether stromal response could react as a diffensive or promotive mechanisms against tumor metastases, further studies would be needed including analysis of infiltrative cells.
