Abstract Background Primary aldosteronism is characterized by high plasma aldosterone and low renin. The plasma aldosterone-to-renin ratio is recommended for screening. Severe hydronephrosis leads to renal parenchymal ischemia, resulting in increased renin secretion. Since nonsuppression of renin may cause a negative result in the aldosterone-to-renin ratio test, severe hydronephrosis and primary aldosteronism occurring simultaneously in a patient are challenging to diagnose. Case presentation A 54-year-old Chinese man of Han ethnicity was diagnosed with hypertension and severe hypokalemia (minimum 1.57 mmol/L) 13 years prior, and was also diagnosed with severe hydronephrosis due to congenital ureteral stenosis on the left side. His clinical features suggested primary aldosteronism, but the aldosterone-to-renin ratio result of the patient was negative every time he underwent the primary aldosteronism screening test. No further treatment for primary aldosteronism was performed, which led the patient to suffer from severe hypokalemia, such that he was taking 12–15 g/day potassium chloride orally to keep his blood potassium between 3.0 and 3.5 mmol/L (reference value, 3.5–5.5 mmol/L) for 13 years, and the patient needed to be hospitalized in the intensive care unit for rescue several times. At admission, although the aldosterone-to-renin ratio result of the patient was negative, we still did the saline stress test and captopril inhibition test, and the results showed that the plasma aldosterone level was not lower after the test than before the test. Adrenal enhanced computed tomography suggested an adenoma in the left adrenal gland, and the results of adrenal vein sampling suggested that the left side was the dominant side. Therefore, laparoscopic total resection of the left adrenal gland was performed, and 2 weeks later, the patient developed short-term renal function impairment and hyperkalemia, but his renal function and blood potassium returned to normal after treatment that included fluid rehydration. The patient’s biochemical test results and clinical symptoms were completely normal after 1 year. Conclusion We suggest that for patients with a high suspicion of primary aldosteronism in the clinic, comprehensive analysis must be performed in combination with clinical characteristic assessments, such as severe hydronephrosis, if renin is within the normal range or if the aldosterone-to-renin ratio result is negative at screening and diagnostic tests, and adrenal vein sampling should be performed if necessary. It can help avoid misdiagnoses and contribute to the treatment of patients with severe hydronephrosis and primary aldosteronism.

Abstract Quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (QUAVs) have attracted significant research focus due to their outstanding Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capabilities. This research addresses the challenge of maintaining precise trajectory tracking in QUAV systems when faced with external disturbances by introducing a robust, two-tier control system based on sliding mode technology. For position control, this approach utilizes a virtual sliding mode control signal to enhance tracking precision and includes adaptive mechanisms to adjust for changes in mass and external disruptions. In controlling the attitude subsystem, the method employs a sliding mode control framework that secures system stability and compliance with intermediate commands, eliminating the reliance on precise models of the inertia matrix. Furthermore, this study incorporates a deep learning approach that combines Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) with the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network to foresee and mitigate trajectory tracking errors, thereby significantly enhancing the reliability and safety of mission operations. The robustness and effectiveness of this innovative control strategy are validated through comprehensive numerical simulations.

Lily bulbs are valued for their health benefits, and drying is a common method for their preservation. This study employed untargeted metabolomics using UHPLC-QTOF-MS to analyze the phytochemical profiles of lily bulbs dried by hot air (HD), microwave (MD), and vacuum freeze (FD) methods. In terms of appearance, FD samples exhibited minimal browning and wrinkling, while HD bulbs showed the most severe changes. Nineteen potential markers were identified, with HD samples showing higher levels of bitter amino acids, peptides, and N-fructosyl phenylalanine. The markers of FD samples were glutamine, coumarin, and p-coumaric acid. Notably, eleutheroside E was detected in lily bulbs for the first time and confirmed as an MD marker, with levels 1.51-fold and 6.19-fold higher than in FD and HD samples, respectively. MD method shows promise for enriching bioactive compounds in dried lily bulbs.

Abstract Photodetectors (PDs) play a crucial role in imaging, sensing, communication systems, etc. Graphene (Gr), a leading two-dimensional material, has demonstrated significant potential for photodetection in recent years. However, its relatively weak interaction with light poses challenges for practical applications. The integration of silicon (Si) and perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) has opened new avenues for Gr in the realm of next-generation optoelectronics. This review provides a comprehensive investigation of Gr/Si Schottky junction PDs and Gr/PQD hybrid PDs as well as their heterostructures. The operating principles, design, fabrication, optimization strategies, and typical applications of these devices are studied and summarized. Through these discussions, we aim to illuminate the current challenges and offer insights into future directions in this rapidly evolving field.

The temporal component of episodic memory has been recognized as a sensitive behavioral marker in early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. However, parallel studies in AD animals are currently lacking, and the underlying neural circuit mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using a novel AppNL-G-F knock-in (APP-KI) rat model, the developmental changes of temporal order memory (TOM) and the relationship with medial prefrontal cortex and perirhinal cortex (mPFC-PRH) circuit were determined through in vivo electrophysiology and microimaging technique. We observed a deficit in TOM performance during the object temporal order memory task (OTOMT) in APP-KI rats at 6 month old, which was not evident at 3 or 4 months of age. Alongside behavioral changes, we identified a gradually extensive and aggravated regional activation and functional alterations in the mPFC and PRH during the performance of OTOMT, which occurred prior to the onset of TOM deficits. Moreover, coherence analysis showed that the functional connectivity between the mPFC and PRH could predict the extent of future behavioral performance. Further analysis revealed that the aberrant mPFC-PRH interaction mainly attributed to the progressive deterioration of synaptic transmission, information flow and network coordination from mPFC to PRH, suggesting the mPFC dysfunction maybe the key area of origin underlying the early changes of TOM. These findings identify a pivotal role of the mPFC-PRH circuit in mediating the TOM deficits in the early stage of AD, which holds promising clinical translational value and offers potential early biological markers for predicting AD memory progression.

To explore the profiles of phytochemical components in geographical indication product of China Lilium davidii var. unicolor, the bulbs of which derived from five major producing areas of Gansu Province (Yuzhong County, Lanzhou City, Qilihe District, Lanzhou City, Lintao County, Dingxi City, Weiyuan County, Dingxi City, Yongjing County, Linxia City) were detected using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF MS). Based on untargeted metabolomics technology, a total of 62 phytochemical components were putatively annotated in the bulbs of L. davidii var. unicolor. Among them, there were 22 kinds of amino acids, peptides and their derivatives (e.g., glutathione), 9 kinds of lipids and phospholipids (e.g., lyso-phosphatidylcholin), 7 kinds of saccharides (e.g., rhamnose), 7 kinds of phenolic acids (e.g., ferulic acid and caffeic acid), 4 kinds of flavonoids (e.g., kaempferol), 4 kinds of natural vitamins (e.g., riboflavin and vitamin C), 3 kinds of phenolamines (e.g., feruloyl putrescine), 2 kinds of coumarins (e.g., gerberinside), 2 kinds of alkaloids (e.g., trigonelline), terpenoids (e.g., abietic acid) and triterpenoid saponins (e.g., eleutheroside E). The study would provide richer data and scientific evidence for the investigation and utilization of L. davidii var. unicolor.

Abstract Flexible photodetectors are fundamental components for developing wearable systems, which can be widely used for medical detection, environmental monitoring and flexible imaging. However, compared with 3D materials, low-dimensional materials have degraded performance, a key challenge for current flexible photodetectors. Here, a high-performance broadband photodetector has been proposed and fabricated. By combining the high mobility of graphene (Gr) with the strong light–matter interactions of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), the flexible photodetector exhibits a greatly improved photoresponse covering the visible to near-infrared range. Additionally, a thin layer of gadolinium iron garnet (Gd3Fe5O12, GdlG) film is introduced to improve the interface of the double van der Waals heterojunctions to reduce the dark current. The SWCNT/GdIG/Gr/GdIG/MoS2 flexible photodetector exhibits a high photoresponsivity of 47.375 A/W and a high detectivity of 1.952 × 1012 Jones at 450 nm, a high photoresponsivity of 109.311 A/W and a high detectivity of 4.504 × 1012 Jones at 1080 nm, and good mechanical stability at room temperature. This work demonstrates the good capacity of GdIG-assisted double van der Waals heterojunctions on flexible substrates and provides a new solution for constructing high-performance flexible photodetectors.

Various adjacent construction projects are inevitably encountered during the large-scale construction of urban underground transportation. The case of a twin shield tunnel excavated below an existing multi-arch culvert bridge in close vicinity has not yet been thoroughly studied. A case of a shield tunnel excavation below an existing multi-arch culvert bridge in Foshan is presented. First, a fully coupled three-dimensional model incorporating fluid and solid interactions was established to simulate the twin shield tunnel excavation below the existing multi-arch culvert bridge in close vicinity. Subsequently, the numerical model was validated using the modified Peck empirical formula. Finally, the influence of different foundation reinforcement deformation moduli, tunnel excavation face support pressures and grouting pressures on ground deformation was discussed. The results indicate that the area most significantly affected by the excavation of the tunnel passing underneath is not within the section of the multi-arch culvert bridge after applying the foundation reinforcement design. The area most significantly impacted is concentrated as the shield tunnel commences excavation and advances beneath the location corresponding to the 1-hole of the steel corrugated pipe. The range of influence of the ground disturbance extends approximately 7 m in front of the excavation face before the tunnel passed through. The range of ground disturbance decreases to 4–6 m in front of the excavation face after the tunnel passed through. The excavation face support pressure and grouting pressure have a minor impact on the settlement of the multi-arch culvert bridge under this reinforcement design. The results provide useful references for the reinforcement design for tunnel excavation adjacent to existing structures.

Abstract Graphene/silicon Schottky junctions have been proven efficient for photodetection, but the existing high dark current seriously restricts applications such as weak signal detection. In this paper, a thin layer of gadolinium iron garnet (Gd3Fe5O12, GdIG) film is introduced to engineer the interface of a graphene/silicon Schottky photodetector. The novel structure shows a significant decrease in dark current by 54 times at a −2 V bias. It also exhibits high performance in a self-powered mode in terms of an Ilight/Idark ratio up to 8.2 × 106 and a specific detectivity of 1.35 × 1013 Jones at 633 nm, showing appealing potential for weak-light detection. Practical suitability characterizations reveal a broadband absorption covering ultraviolet to near-infrared light and a large linear response with a wide range of light intensities. The device holds an operation speed of 0.15 ms, a stable response for 500 continuous working cycles, and long-term environmental stability after several months. Theoretical analysis shows that the interlayer increases the barrier height and passivates the contact surface so that the dark current is suppressed. This work demonstrates the good capacity of GdIG thin films as interlayer materials and provides a new solution for high-performance photodetectors.

Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) has attracted intense research interest due to the extensive applications in optical integrated systems. This paper presents a TE-Pass/TM-Stop graphene-based on-chip MZI, including splitter, phase shift arm, reference arm and combiner. The splitter and combiner are based on subwavelength gratings (SWGs) coupler. Hybrid slot waveguides with photonic crystals (PhC) are adopted as the phase shift arm and the reference arm, with and without graphene, respectively. The results show that the phase sensitivity is 1010 rad/RIU-cm at 1.55 μm, which is 10 times higher than the strip waveguide-based graphene MZI.

Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be used as atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips for high-resolution scanning due to their small diameter, high aspect ratio and outstanding wear resistance. However, previous approaches for fabricating CNT probes are complex and poorly controlled. In this paper, we introduce a simple method to selectively fabricate a single CNT on an AFM tip by controlling the trigger threshold to adjust the amount of growth solution attached to the tip. The yield rate is over 93%. The resulting CNT probes are suitable in length, without the need for a subsequent cutting process. We used the CNT probe to scan the complex nanostructure with a high aspect ratio, thereby solving the long-lasting problem of mapping complex nanostructures.

The current standards used for nitrogen pollution evaluation are lacking, and scientific classification methods are needed for nitrogen pollution to improve water quality management capabilities. This study addresses the important issue of assessing surface water nitrogen pollution by utilizing two advanced multivariate statistical techniques: self-organizing maps (SOMs) obtained using the K-means algorithm and the Hasse diagram technique (HDT). The research targets of this study are the rivers of the megacity Chengdu, China. Samples were collected on a monthly basis in 2017–2020 from different sites along the rivers, and their nitrogen pollution parameters were determined. The grouping of nitrogen pollution parameters and the clustering of sampling events using SOMs facilitate the preprocessing required for the HDT, wherein clusters are ordered according to the pre-clustered water sampling events. The results indicate that nitrogen pollution in the Chengdu River Basin, which is prominent and mainly driven by nitrate nitrogen, can be categorized into five levels. The nitrogen pollution in Tuo River is serious. Although the degree of ammonia nitrogen pollution in Jin River is higher, the pollution range is smaller. Furthermore, these results were evaluated by the SOMs and HDT to be clear and reliable. Overall, these findings can provide a basis for local environmental legislation.

Background: Histone deacetylase (HDAC) plays a crucial role in regulating the expression and activity of a variety of genes associated with tumor progression and immunotherapeutic processes. The aim of this study was to characterize HDAC pathway copy number variation (CNV) in pan-cancer.Methods: A total of 10,678 tumor samples involving 33 types of tumors from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were included in the study.Results: HDAC pathway CNV and CNV gain were identified as prognostic risk factors for pan-cancer species. The differences of tumor characteristics including tumor mutational burden, tumor neoantigen burden, high-microsatellite instability, and microsatellite stable between HDAC pathway CNV altered-type group and wild-type group varied among the various cancer species. In some cancer types, HDAC pathway CNV alteration was positively correlated with loss of heterozygosity, CNV burden, ploidy, and homologous recombination defect score markers, while it was significantly negatively correlated with immune score and stroma score. There were significant differences in immune characteristics such as major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I), MHC-II, chemokines, cytolytic-activity, and IFN-γ between the two groups. Immune cycle characteristics varied from one cancer type to another.Conclusion: This study reveals a tumor and immune profile of HDAC pathway CNV as well as its unlimited potential in immune prognosis.

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a typical, difficult-to-machine material that has been widely used in the fabrication of optical elements and structural and heat-resistant materials. Parallel grinding has been frequently adopted to produce a high-quality surface finish. Surface generation is a vital issue for assessing surface quality, and extensive modeling has been developed. However, most of the models were based on a disc wheel with a cylindrical surface, whereas the surface topography generation based on an arc-shaped tool has been paid relatively little attention. In this study, a new theoretical model for surface generation in ultra-precision parallel grinding has been established by considering the arc-shaped effect, synchronous vibration of the wheel, and cutting profile interference in the tool feed direction. Finally, the ground surface generation mechanism and grinding ductility were analyzed in the grinding of SiC ceramics. The results showed that the spiral and straight-line mode vibration patterns were the main feature of the machined surface, and its continuity was mainly affected by the phase shift. Furthermore, for the in-phase shift condition, the grinding ductility was more significant than for the out-of-phase shift due to the continuously decreasing relative linear speed between the wheel and workpiece.

Caused by Salmonella pullorum, pullorosis is a bacterial disease threatening the poultry industry and has been listed as the bacterial disease to be eliminated by the government. However, antibiotic treatment of pullorosis has become increasingly difficult, resulting in severe influences on the sustainable development of poultry. Abuse of antibiotics may cause global drug-resistant problems. Hence, early diagnosis of young chickens and accurate treatment of sick chickens are urgently needed. Traditional serotyping for Salmonella detection is costly and labor-intensive, whereas other commonly used plate agglutination test methods often cause physical injury of chickens. Therefore, a rapid and nondamaging detection method is of great significance for early diagnosis, which is the key step in accurate medication and elimination of pullorosis. In this study, we propose a novel lateral flow nucleic acid assay (LFNAA) system combining recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) for the detection of S. pullorum. In this method, the DNA of S. pullorum strains was quickly amplified by RPA under 37°C, and then, the RPA products were added onto the LFNAA sample pad until the final results could be observed by naked eyes within 3 min. The proposed assay is fast and delivers visible results to naked eyes in field test. The limit of detection for genomic DNA was 5 × 10−3 ng/μL, indicating high sensitivity. In addition, the proposed LFNAA system is cost-effective, efficient, and nondamaging to chicks in the field test. This system provides technical support for early diagnosis of S. pullorum in the poultry and paves a way for future precision medicine to avoid the global drug-resistance issues.

Natural antimicrobials (NAM) are promising candidates for the successful control of poultry-borne bacteria, carrying potent antimicrobial activity (AMA) against a wide range of multidrug-resistant pathogens. Individual activities of carvacrol, eugenol, trans-cinnamaldehyde, oregano, and thymol, along with the combined activity of paired compounds, were examined using broth microdilution and checkerboard techniques. The characteristic interactions between the compounds were calculated using an improved method, based on combination index (CI) values. The bacteria examined herein were selected due to their known genetic resistance to at least one antibiotic. Our results indicated that thymol was most effective, exhibiting the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value against Salmonella pullorum, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, establishing the order of antimicrobial efficacy as: thymol > oregano > carvacrol > trans-cinnamaldehyde > eugenol. In the interaction study, the paired combination of carvacrol and thymol showed synergistic effects and was highly effective in reducing the antibiotic resistance of all the evaluated pathogens. With widespread use of antibiotics in the aquaculture industry, bacterial resistance has recently attracted increasing attention. Continuous emergence of multi-resistant bacteria has greatly threatened human and animal health, as well as the quality and safety of livestock products. To control bacterial resistance, the effect of bacterial resistance needs to be well understood. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing Escherichia coli (E. coli) drug resistance in large-scale pig farms. In this study, 296 strains of E. coli isolated and identified from large-scale pig farms in Beijing were used as the research objects. In vitro drug sensitivity tests were used to determine the sensitivity to 10 antibiotics of pig-derived E. coli. SPSS logistic regression was employed to analyze the effects of the season, pig type, sampling point (medication type) and sampling location on resistance and multi-drug resistance of E. coli from pigs. The degrees of drug resistance to 10 antibiotics of the 296 strains of pig-derived E. coli were varied, their resistance rates were between 4.05 and 97.64%, and their multi-drug resistance was appalling, with the highest resistance to six antibiotics being 26.35%. The isolated strains were proven more resistant to tetracyclines, penicillin and chloramphenicol, which are commonly used for disease prevention in pig farms, and less resistant to quinolones and aminoglycosides, which are not used in pig farms. The resistance of the isolated strains in spring and summer was generally higher than that in winter. E. coli resistance in piglets, fattening pigs and sows was more serious than that in nursery and sick pigs. The results showed that the season, type of medication and type of pig had an influence on the pig-derived E. coli resistance, among which the type of medication was the most influencing factor.

Interactions between plants and microbes may promote the growth of plants and regulate the production of secondary metabolites. Hemp (Cannabis sativa) is an annual herb and an important commercial crop. However, the assembly and network of hemp-associated microbiomes inhabiting in soil and plant compartments have not been comprehensively understood. This work investigated the assembly and network of bacterial and fungal communities living in soils (bulk and rhizosphere) and plant compartments (root, stem, leaf, and flower) of four hemp ecotypes cultivated in the same habitat. Microbiome assembly was predominantly shaped by compartment niche. Microbial alpha diversity was the highest in soil, continually decreased from root to flower. Core bacterial genera Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Rhizobium, Planococcus, and Sphingomonas were mostly enriched in aerial endosphere niches; Clitopilus, Plectosphaerella, and Mortierella were enriched in belowground endosphere. Microbial network complexity and connectivity decreased from root to flower. According to source tracking analysis, hemp microbiota primarily originated from soil and were subsequently filtered in different plant compartments. This work provides details on hemp-associated microbiome along the soil–plant continuum and a comprehensive understanding of the origin and transmission mode of endophytes in hemp.

The propulsion system is one of the important and vulnerable sub-systems in a strap-on launch vehicle. Among different failure modes, the thrust drop fault is the most common and remediable one. It degrades vehicle attitude tracking ability directly. To this end, this paper focuses on the design and application of attitude reconstruction problems with a thrust loss fault during the ascending flight phase. We firstly analyze the special failure modes and impacts on the propulsion system through a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). Then, six degrees of freedom dynamic and kinematic models are formulated, which are integrated into the Matlab/Simulink environment afterward. The above models’ validation is realized through numerical simulations with different fault severity. Simulation results show that the max attitude deviation is only 0.67° approximately in the pitch angle channel under normal conditions, and the flight attitude angle deviation is directly proportional to the thrust loss percentage when the thrust drop fault occurs. Based on the validated models, a practical reconfigurable ideal through adjusting the control allocation matrix is analyzed. Then, an automation redistribution mechanism based on the moment equivalent principle before and after the thrust drop is proposed to realize proportional allocation of virtual control command among the actuators. The effectiveness of the designed attitude reconstruction method is demonstrated through numerical simulations and comparison analysis under various fault scenarios. The results show that the rocket attitude can be quickly adjusted to the predetermined program angle within about 2.5 s after the shutdown failure of a single engine, and the flight speed and altitude can also reach the required value with another 17 s engine operation. Therefore, the designed control reconfiguration strategy can deal with the thrust loss fault with high practicability and can be applied to real-time FTC systems. Last but not least, conclusions and prospects are presented to inspire researchers with further exploration in this field.

This paper presents a dual-platform scanner for dental reconstruction based on a three-dimensional (3D) laser-scanning method. The scanner combines translation and rotation platforms to perform a holistic scanning. A hybrid calibration method for laser scanning is proposed to improve convenience and precision. This method includes an integrative method for data collection and a hybrid algorithm for data processing. The integrative method conveniently collects a substantial number of calibrating points with a stepped gauge and a pattern for both the translation and rotation scans. The hybrid algorithm, which consists of a basic model and a compensation network, achieves strong stability with a small degree of errors. The experiments verified the hybrid calibration method and the scanner application for the measurement of dental pieces. Two typical dental pieces were measured, and the experimental results demonstrated the validity of the measurement that was performed using the dual-platform scanner. This method is effective for the 3D reconstruction of dental pieces, as well as that of objects with irregular shapes in engineering fields. For the protection of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Sunite lamb, PGI Sunite lamb samples and lamb samples from two other banners in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region were distinguished by stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N, δ2H, and δ18O) and two local modeling approaches. In terms of the main characteristics and predictive performance, local modeling was better than global modeling. The accuracies of five local models (LDA, RF, SVM, BPNN, and KNN) obtained by the Adaptive Kennard–Stone algorithm were 91.30%, 95.65%, 91.30%, 100%, and 91.30%, respectively. The accuracies of the five local models obtained by an approach of PCA–Full distance based on DD–SIMCA were 91.30%, 91.30%, 91.30%, 100%, and 95.65%, respectively. The accuracies of the five global models were 91.30%, 91.30%, 91.30%, 100%, and 91.30%, respectively. Stable isotope ratio analysis combined with local modeling can be used as an effective indicator for protecting PGI Sunite lamb.

Vision-based three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement techniques have been widely applied over the past decades in numerous applications due to their characteristics of high precision, high efficiency and non-contact. Recently, great advances in computing devices and artificial intelligence have facilitated the development of vision-based measurement technology. This paper mainly focuses on state-of-the-art vision-based methods that can perform 3D shape measurement with high precision and high resolution. Specifically, the basic principles and typical techniques of triangulation-based measurement methods as well as their advantages and limitations are elaborated, and the learning-based techniques used for 3D vision measurement are enumerated. Finally, the advances of, and the prospects for, further improvement of vision-based 3D shape measurement techniques are proposed.

In this work, we employed commercial finite element modeling (FEM) software package ABAQUS to analyze mechanical properties of ZnO nanowire before and after embedding with different kinds of nanowires, having different materials and cross-section models such as Au (circular), Ag (pentagonal) and Si (rectangular) using three point bending technique. The length and diameter of the ZnO nanowire were measured to be 12,280 nm and 103.2 nm, respectively. In addition, Au, Ag and Si nanowires were considered to have the length of 12,280 nm and the diameter of 27 nm. It was found that after embedding Si nanowire with rectangular cross-section into the ZnO nanowire, the distribution of Von Misses stresses criterion, displacement and strain were decreased than the other nanowires embedded. The highest stiffness, the elastic deformation and the high strength against brittle failure have been made by Si nanowire comparison to the Au and Ag nanowires, respectively. Pre-compression 3% and pre-stretch 3% subsequent annealing at 200ºC for 2h are conducted on AZ31 magnesium alloys, then inverse tensile and compressive deformation are carried out at room temperature, respectively. During inverse tension 3% deformation on 1st pre-compression samples, detwinning behavior happens; after 2nd pre-compression 3%, the volume fraction of {10-12} extension twins decreases comparing with 1st pre-compression. Due to the interaction of dislocation and induced twinning lamellas, strain hardening rate (θ) increases on 1st and 2nd pre-compression samples. {10-12} tensile twinning is restrained during inverse compressive deformation by pre-stretch process. Owing to the decreasing amount of twins, the texture strengthening in compressive deformation weakens. So the slop of stage III in strain hardening rate sustaining reduces after 1st pre-stretch 3% and 2nd pre-stretch 3% deformation during inverse compression deformation.

Traceability of milk origin in China is conducive to the implementation of the protection of regional products. In order to distinguish milk from different geographical distances in China, we traced the milk of eight farms in four neighboring provinces of China (Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Hebei, Ningxia Hui autonomous and Shaanxi), and multivariate data analysis was applied to the data including elemental analysis, stable isotope analysis and fatty acid analysis. In addition, orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) is used to determine the optimal classification model, and it is explored whether the combination of different technologies is better than a single technical analysis. It was confirmed that in the inter-provincial samples, the combination of the two techniques was better than the analysis using a single technique (fatty acids: R2 = 0.716, Q2 = 0.614; fatty acid-binding isotopes: R2 = 0.760, Q2 = 0.635). At the same time, milk produced by farms with different distances of less than 11 km in each province was discriminated, and the discriminant distance was successfully reduced to 0.7 km (Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region: the distance between the two farms was 0.7 km, R2 = 0.771, Q2 = 0.631). For short-distance samples, the combination multiple technologies are not completely superior to a single technique, and sometimes, it is easy to cause model over-fitting.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the influences of mechanical strain on optical properties of ZnO nanowire (NW) before and after embedding ZnS nanowire into the ZnO nanowire, respectively. For this work, commercial finite element modeling (FEM) software package ABAQUS and three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods were utilized to analyze the nonlinear mechanical behavior and optical properties of the sample, respectively. Likewise, in this structure a single focused Gaussian beam with wavelength of 633 nm was used as source. The dimensions of ZnO nanowire were defined to be 12280 nm in length and 103.2 nm in diameter with hexagonal cross-section. In order to investigate mechanical properties, three-point bending technique was adopted so that both ends of the model were clamped with mid-span under loading condition and then the physical deformation model was imported into FDTD solutions to study optical properties of ZnO nanowire under mechanical strain. Moreover, it was found that increase in the strain due to the external load induced changes in reflectance, transmittance and absorptance, respectively.

In this paper, high-throughput RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to search for transcriptional biomarkers for β2-agonists. In combination with drug mechanisms, a smaller group of genes with higher detection accuracy was screened out. Unknown samples were first predicted by this group of genes, and liquid chromatograph tandem mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) was applied to positive samples to validate the biomarkers. The results of principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and discriminant analysis (DA) indicated that the eight genes screened by high-throughput RNA-seq were able to distinguish samples in the experimental group and control group. Compared with the nine genes selected from an earlier literature, 17 genes including these nine genes were proven to have a more satisfactory effect, which validated the accuracy of gene selection by RNA-seq. Then, six key genes were selected from the 17 genes according to the variable importance in projection (VIP) value of greater than 1. The test results using the six genes and 17 genes were similar, revealing that the six genes were critical genes. By using the six genes, three positive samples possibly treated with drugs were screened out from 25 unknown samples through DA and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Then, the three samples were verified by a standard method, and mapenterol was detected in a sample. Therefore, the six genes can be used as biomarkers to detect β2-agonists. Compared with the previous study, accurate detection of β2-agonists abuse using six key genes is an improvement method, which show great significance in the monitoring of β2-agonists abuse in animal husbandry.

In this paper, an optical sensor based on a cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanobelt has been developed. The CdS nanobelt was synthesized by the vapor phase transportation (VPT) method. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) results revealed that the nanobelt had a hexagonal wurtzite structure of CdS and presented good crystal quality. A single nanobelt Schottky contact optical sensor was fabricated by the electron beam lithography (EBL) technique, and the device current-voltage results showed back-to-back Schottky diode characteristics. The photosensitivity, dark current and the decay time of the sensor were 4 × 104, 31 ms and 0.2 pA, respectively. The high photosensitivity and the short decay time were because of the exponential dependence of photocurrent on the number of the surface charges and the configuration of the back to back Schottky junctions.

Presented here is a slotted-quad-beam structure sensor for the measurement of friction in micro bearings. Stress concentration slots are incorporated into a conventional quad-beam structure to improve the sensitivity of force measurements. The performance comparison between the quad-beam structure sensor and the slotted-quad-beam structure sensor are performed by theoretical modeling and finite element (FE) analysis. A hollow stainless steel probe is attached to the mesa of the sensor chip by a tailor-made organic glass fixture. Concerning the overload protection of the fragile beams, a glass wafer is bonded onto the bottom of sensor chip to limit the displacement of the mesa. The calibration of the packaged device is experimentally performed by a tri-dimensional positioning stage, a precision piezoelectric ceramic and an electronic analytical balance, which indicates its favorable sensitivity and overload protection. To verify the potential of the proposed sensor being applied in micro friction measurement, a measurement platform is established. The output of the sensor reflects the friction of bearing resulting from dry friction and solid lubrication. The results accord with the theoretical modeling and demonstrate that the sensor has the potential application in measuring the micro friction force under stable stage in MEMS machines.

ZnO nanocombs with 25 μm comb teeth were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of carrier gas flow rate and temperature on ZnO comb teeth growth. The growth mechanism was demonstrated according to the morphology of prepared nanocombs under different growth parameters. The experimental results showed that the intensity of green emission significantly increased when the ZnO nanocombs became thinner and longer. It attributed to much more hanging bonds and oxygen vacancy on the surfaces of comb teeth.

The aim of this paper is study of the effects of multiple cross-section of Au nanowire on mechanical properties. Different cross-section models of Au nanowires including circular, hexagonal, pentagonal and rectangular were simulated by finite element modeling using ABAQUS. In this study, the bending technique was applied so that both ends of the model were clamped with mid-span under loading condition. The cross-sections had the length of 400 nm and the diameter of 40 nm, except the circular cross-section while the rest of the cross-sections had an equivalent diameter. Von Misses stresses distribution were used to define the stress distribution in the cross-section under loading condition, and elastic deformation was analyzed by the beam theory. The results disclosed that the circular and the rectangular models had highest and lowest strengths against plastic deformation, respectively.

As persistent organic pollutants, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) accumulate in the bodies of animals and humans, resulting in toxic effects on the reproductive, immune, nervous, and endocrine systems. The biological and toxicological characteristics of enantiomers of chiral PCBs may differ, but these enantioselective effects of PCBs have not been fully characterized. In this study, we performed metabolomics analysis, using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) to investigate the enantioselective toxic effects of PCB95 in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos after exposure to three dose levels of 0.1, 1, and 10 μg/L for 72 h. Nanowires have been widely studied due to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties; however, their practical applications are limited to the lack of an effective technique for controlled assembly. In the present work, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire arrays were assembled via a combing process using a makeup brush and the nanodevice was fabricated. The current–voltage (I–V) and ultraviolet (UV) characteristics of the device indicate stable and repeatable electrical properties. The carbon monoxide (CO) sensing properties were tested at operating temperatures of 200, 300 and 400 °C. It was found that ZnO based sensor exhibited the highest sensitivity to CO at 300 °C due to the change of dominant oxygen species. Comparing with others result, the sensitivity of the fabricated sensor exhibits higher sensing performance. The sensing mechanism of the CO sensor is also discussed.

Tau-fluvalinate (TFLV) is one of the most potent chiral synthetic pyrethroids to control a wide range of pests in agricultural fields, especially in apiary. In this study, two stereoisomers of TFLV were fully separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a semipreparative chiral column using cellulose-tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) as chiral stationary phase and n-hexane and 2-propanol (96/4, v/v) as mobile phase at a flow rate of 2.5 mL min−1. The (+)-stereoisomer was first eluted by detecting with an optical rotation detector. After obtaining pure single stereoisomer of TFLV, acute toxicities of each isomer and TFLV standard to zebrafish were evaluated. The results showed that the (+)-stereoisomer exhibited 273.4 times higher toxicity than the (−)-stereoisomer and 6.7 times higher than TFLV standard, according to their LC50 values at 96 h after exposure. This indicates that the toxicity of TFLV mainly originates from (+)-stereoisomer. These results are very helpful to prepare single stereoisomer of chiral pesticides and evaluate their different toxicological effects to aquatic organisms.

Colorimetric aptasensors using unmodified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have attracted much attention because of their low cost, simplicity, and practicality, and they have been developed for various targets in the past several years. However, previous research has focused on developing single-target assays. Here, we report the development of a homogeneous multiplex aptasensor by using more than one class of aptamers to stabilize AuNPs. Using sulfadimethoxine (SDM), kanamycin (KAN) and adenosine (ADE) as example targets, a KAN aptamer (750 nM), an SDM aptamer (250 nM) and an ADE aptamer (500 nM) were mixed at a 1∶1∶1 volume ratio and adsorbed directly onto the surface of unmodified AuNPs by electrostatic interaction. Upon the addition of any of the three targets, the conformation of the corresponding aptamer changed from a random coil structure to a rigid folded structure, which could not adsorb and stabilize AuNPs. The AuNPs aggregated in a specific reaction buffer (20 mM Tris-HCl containing 20 mM NaCl and 5 mM KCl), which led to a color change from red to purple/blue. These results demonstrate that the multiplex colorimetric aptasensor detected three targets simultaneously while maintaining the same sensitivity as a single-target aptasensor for each individual target. The multiplex aptasensor could be extended to other aptamers for various molecular detection events. Due to its simple design, easy operation, fast response, cost effectiveness and lack of need for sophisticated instrumentation, the proposed strategy provides a powerful tool to examine large numbers of samples to screen for a small number of potentially positive samples containing more than one analyte, which can be further validated using sophisticated instruments.

The ability to detect sequence-specific single-strand DNA (ssDNA) in complex, contaminant-ridden samples, using a fluorescent method directly without a DNA extraction and PCR step could simplify the detection of pathogens in the field and in the clinic. Here, we have demonstrated a simple label-free sensing strategy to detect ssDNA by employing its complementary ssDNA, S1 nuclease and nucleic acid fluorescent dyes. Upon clearing away redundant complementary ssDNA and possibly mismatched double strand DNA by using S1 nuclease, the fluorescent signal-to-noise ratio could be increased dramatically. It enabled the method to be adaptable to three different types of DNA fluorescent dyes and the ability to detect target ssDNA in complex, multicomponent samples, like tissue homogenate. The method can distinguish a two-base mismatch from avian influenza A (H1N1) virus. Also, it can detect the appearance of 50 pM target ssDNA in 0.5 µg · mL(-1) Lambda DNA, and 50 nM target ssDNA in 5 µg · mL(-1) Lambda DNA or in tissue homogenate. It is facile and cost-effective, and could be easily extended to detect other ssDNA with many common nucleic acid fluorescent dyes.

Ochratoxin A(OTA) is found to be one of the predominant contaminating mycotoxins in a wide variety of food commodities. To avoid the risk of OTA consumption, the detection and quantitation of OTA level are of great significance. Based on the fact that ssDNA aptamer has the ability to form a double-strand structure with its complementary sequence, a simple and rapid aptamer-based label-free approach for highly sensitive and selective fluorescence detection of OTA was developed by using ultra-sensitive double-strand DNA specific dyes PicoGreen. The results showed that as low as 1 ng/mL of OTA could be detected with a dynamic range of more than 5 orders of magnitude which satisfies the requirements for OTA maximum residue limit in various food regulated by European Commission. With the specificity of aptamer, the assay exhibited high selectivity for OTA against two other analogues (N-acetyl-l-phenylalanine and zearalenone). We also tested the aptasensor practicability using real sample of 1% beer spiked with a series of concentration of OTA and the results show good tolerance to matrix effect. All detections could be achieved in less than 30 min, which provides a simple, quick and sensitive detection method for OTA screening in food safety and could be easily extend to other small molecular chemical compounds detection which aptamer has been selected.

A simple method to extract DNA from hair shafts was developed by using enzymatic laundry powder at the first step of the process. The whole extraction can be finished in less than 2 hours. The simple extraction reagent proposed here contains only two cheap components: ordinary enzymatic laundry powder and PCR buffer. After extraction, an ultra sensitive fluorescent nucleic acid stain, PicoGreen, was used for quantifying trace amount of double-stranded DNA in the solution extracted. For further validation of DNA extraction, four primers were employed to amplify DNA microsatellite loci. Both fluorescence spectroscopy and PCR results suggested that this method can extract DNA from hair shafts with good efficiency and repeatability. The study will greatly facilitate the use of hair shafts in future for DNA analyses on genome-wide scale.

Steroid metabolism is important in various species. The accumulation of androgen metabolite, androstenone, in pig adipose tissue is negatively associated with pork flavor, odour and makes the meat unfit for human consumption. The 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 7 (17βHSD7) expressed abundantly in porcine liver, and it was previously suggested to be associated with androstenone levels. Understanding the enzymes and metabolic pathways responsible for androstenone as well as other steroids metabolism is important for improving the meat quality. At the same time, metabolism of steroids is known to be species- and tissue-specific. Therefore it is important to investigate between-species variations in the hepatic steroid metabolism and to elucidate the role of 17βHSD7 in this process. Here we used an effective methodological approach, liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, to investigate species-specific metabolism of androstenone, testosterone and beta-estradiol in HepG2 cell line, and pig cultured hepatocytes. Species- and concentration-depended effect of steroids on 17βHSD7 gene expression was also investigated. It was demonstrated that the investigated steroids can regulate the 17βHSD7 gene expression in HepG2 and primary cultured porcine hepatocytes in a concentration-dependent and species-dependent pattern. Investigation of steroid metabolites demonstrated that androstenone formed a 3'-hydroxy compound 3β-hydroxy-5α-androst-16-ene. Testosterone was metabolized to 4-androstene-3,17-dione. Estrone was found as the metabolite for β-estradiol. Inhibition study with 17βHSD inhibitor apigenin showed that apigenin didn't affect androstenone metabolism. Apigenin at high concentration (50 µM) tends to inhibit testosterone metabolism but this inhibition effect was negligible. Beta-estradiol metabolism was notably inhibited with apigenin at high concentration. The study also established that the level of testosterone and β-estradiol metabolites was markedly increased after co-incubation with high concentration of apigenin. This study established that 17βHSD7 is not the key enzyme responsible for androstenone and testosterone metabolism in porcine liver cells.
