10. Enhancement of Thermal Conductivity in Polymer Composites by Maximizing Surface-Contact Area of Polymer-Filler Interface

Abstract

In this article we discuss in detail the effective approaches to enhance the thermal conductivity in polymer composites. It is shown from numerical simulations that maximizing interfacial area between filler and polymer enhances very significantly the effective thermal conductivity in composites. Our study outlines two main facts. (a) Although the nature of the filler's geometry plays an important role in the effective thermal conductivity, we show that among the different geometries thermal conductivity is high for those geometries for which the ratio of surface-area to volume is high. Thus non-spherical shaped fillers show high thermal conductivity compared to the spherical fillers. (b) For fillers of a particular geometry, by maximizing its surface area without changing the volume fraction of the metallic filler, the effective thermal conductivity increases. Thus, the interfacial area between filler and polymer plays an important role in the enhancement of thermal conductivity. Maximizing interfaces facilitates more routes for heat conduction through the metallic filler. Thus filler material can be transformed to result into more surface such that more interfaces between the filer polymer can be obtained. It is also observed that as this interfacial area increases, increase in effective thermal conductivity follows from linear to the logarithmic growth. It should be noted that to inherit the polymer properties there is a restriction on the upper bound of volume fraction of the fillers. The current study bring out an important step in this direction. Our results are technologically very important in designing composite polymers for better heat conduction, and are very cost-effective. This study also provides a connection between the bulk and the surface area in effectively determination of the thermal conductivity.

Abstract

Perovskite solar cells appear to be the most promising candidate for thin-film solar cells. In this work, double layer Perovskite solar cells were simulated using a SCAPS-1D simulator in which different thickness of the perovskite layers was used, a buffer layer of PEDOT:PSS was used, the effect of defect density in absorbing layers, the influence of doping in Spiro-OMeTAD as well as the effect of temperature is studied. With this proposed simulated model, the maximum efficiency of the perovskite solar cell reaches 28.22%. Hence this simulation work will provide handy information in fabricating perovskite solar cells to reasonably choose material parameters and to achieve high efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study examines the challenge of predicting end-to-end packet delay in mobile ad hoc networks for Quality of Service (QoS) routing. Factors like node neighbors, interference, and medium access control impact delay unpredictability. We explore the potential of artificial neural networks to enhance accuracy in forecasting these delays, aiming to improve QoS within the dynamic Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) context. We calculated delay using sourcedestination path length and average neighbors. Two models were built: Regression Neural Networks (RNN) and Radial Basis Function (RBF) networks. Using a network simulator, we gathered data sets for three routing protocols: AODV, DSDV, and DSR. These sets include delay, path length, and average neighbors. Abstract

We are reporting the effect of polymer dispersion on liquid crystals (LCs) by examining their structural, morphological and electro-optic properties. Ultraviolet irradiation effect has been investigated through morphological and electro-optic characteristics and perceived structural behaviour transformation in the respective devices, which persuade topological restraints in the form of defects (photopolymerisation and chemical interaction provoke the development of frozen network which leads to packing of LC molecules in different orientations and defect geometries). We have observed the effect of temperature and voltage on morphological studies via optical micrographs under polarising optical microscopy. A significant effect of polymer concentrations and temperature has been observed on the physicochemical properties of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) systems. The development of defects can be understood via possible theoretical chemical interactions, polymerisation and anchoring energy. A relative optical transmittance and lower threshold voltage has been presented for all the respective PDLC devices in comparison to the pure LC. A higher anchoring (10−5 J/m2) and contrast (18.34 dB) have been noticed in the PDLC devices. Refractive indices and corresponding birefringence have also been measured and compared for pure and doped LC systems. 46. Evaluation of nonlinear optical parameters of Se40As60−xSx(x = 10, 20) chalcogenide thin films for photonic applications.

Abstract

Optical transmissions in the wavelength range 600–2700 nm have been done for the Se40As60−xSx (x = 10, 20) chalcogenide thin films. By using these transmission curves, various optical parameters like linear refractive index (n), static refractive index (n0), nonlinear refractive index (n2), oscillator energy (Ed), dispersive energy (E0), band gap energy (Eg), third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility (χ(3)) and γ have been studied. Wemple-Di-Domenico (WDD) relation has been used for dispersion analysis. To know the possibility of nonlinear switching in Se40As60−xSx (x = 10, 20) chalcogenides, nonlinear susceptibility and nonlinear refractive indices are determined by using linear index of refraction and parameters of WDD. On the basis of observed nonlinear optical parameters, the suitability for photonic applications is also discussed. Our experimental results have very good agreement at 10 at.% of S with telecommunication wavelength (~ 1550 nm) at which the maximum optical nonlinearity is found. Due to higher values of nonlinear refractive index, Se40As50S10 is processed better for photonic devices in comparison of Se40As40S20. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
