1. Evaluation of a Coating Process for SiO2/TiO2 Composite Particles by Machine Learning Techniques

Abstract

In this study, in order to optimize a fabrication process for SiO2/TiO2 composite particles and control their coating ratio (CTi), regression models for the coating process were constructed using various machine learning techniques. The composite particles with a core (SiO2)/shell (TiO2) structure were synthesized by mechanical stress under various fabrication conditions with respect to the supply volume of raw materials (V), addition ratio of TiO2 (rTi), operation time (t), rotor rotation speed (S), and temperature (T). Regression models were constructed by the least squares method (LSM), principal component regression (PCR), support vector regression (SVR), and the deep neural network (DNN) method. The accuracy of the constructed regression models was evaluated using the determination coefficients (R2) and the predictive performance was evaluated by comparing the prediction coefficients (Q2). From the perspective of the R2 and Q2 values, the DNN regression model was found to be the most suitable model for the present coating process. Moreover, the effects of the fabrication parameters on CTi were analyzed using the constructed DNN model. The results suggested that the t value was the dominant factor determining CTi of the composite particles, with the plot of CTi versus t displaying a clear maximum.

Abstract

An improved airflow method to measure the distribution of adhesive strength between charged particles and a metal substrate in an external electric field is presented. In this study, toner particles were negatively charged with a corona charger and deposited on the substrate. The substrate with the particles on the surface was mounted in a rectangular air channel with parallel electrodes. Air velocity was increased at a constant rate, and entrained particles were detected by a laser particle monitor. By studying the relationships between particle entrainment efficiency and air velocity, the particle–substrate adhesion was analyzed in detail. It was found that particle adhesion increased with the increase in the initial charge of particles. It was also found that the particle adhesion increased in a vertically downward electric field but decreased in the upward electric field. These experimental results cannot be explained by the Coulomb force in the electric field. Therefore, a theoretical model based on charge transfer in the external electric field was proposed. This model explains the variation of the particle–substrate adhesion by considering the image force arising due to the transferred charges.

Abstract

A water extract of shark cartilage was fractionated into acidic and basic fractions by preparative isoelectric focusing on the basis of the amphoteric nature of samples. The acidic fraction was further fractionated into ethanol-soluble and -precipitate fractions. After the carcinogenesis treatment using N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine, hamsters received a diet containing each fraction or purified chondroichin sulfate to give 0.4% (w/w) for 50 days. Only administration of the acidic ethanol-precipitate-fraction-containing diet significantly increased serum inhibitory activity against matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and reduced the number of adenocarcinomas in the pancreatic duct. The active fraction predominantly consisted of chondroichin sulfate-containing proteoglycan. However, the purified chondroichin sulfate had no significant activity. These results suggest that the protein moiety of the proteoglycan might be involved in the increase of serum inhibitory activity against MMP-9 and suppression of pancreatic carcinogenesis in hamster.

Abstract

Dispersion behavior of nanoparticles in organic solvent depends on surface molecular structure, even if the material and size of particles are same. In order to discuss the effect of surface conditions of nanoparticles on dispersion behavior in organic solvent and surface modification behavior, single phase SiO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles and SiO2-TiO2 composite particles were prepared by using flash creation method (FC method) with different thermal source, DC plasma or burner. By the observation of TiO2-SiO2 composite particles by TEM-EDS system, the microstructure of composite particles was estimated that SiO2 layer coated on core TiO2 nanoparticles. Surface OH group structure, dispersion behavior in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) of each TiO2 nanoparticles was depended on the thermal source of FC method. When thermal source used was burner, the high OH group density and well dispersion behavior was observed. However, after surface modification by silane coupling agent, the aggregate size of TiO2 nanoparticles prepared by DC plasma in NMP was decreased.
