Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) and related composites show an enormous potential in next-generation high energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, the strategy to design functional covalent organic framework materials with nanoscale structure and controllable morphology faces serious challenges. In this work, a layer-assembled hollow microspherical structure (Sn@COF-hollow) based on the tin-nitrogen (Sn-N) coordination interaction is designed. Such carefully-crafted hollow structure with large exposed surface area and metal center decoration endows the Sn@COF-hollow electrode with more activated lithium-reaction sites, including Sn ions, carbon-nitrogen double bond (CN) groups and carbon-carbon double bond (CC) units from aromatic benzene rings. Besides, the layer-assembled hollow structure of the Sn@COF-hollow electrode can also alleviate the volume expansion of electrode during repeated cycling, and achieve fast electrons/ions transmission and capacitance-dominated lithium-reaction kinetics, further leading to enhanced cycling performance and rate properties. In addition, the effective combination of the inorganic metal and organic framework components in the Sn@COF-hollow electrode can promote its improved conductivity and further enhance lithium-storage properties. Layered sodium transition metal (TM) oxides exhibit great potential as high energy density cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The large Na ions, nevertheless, adopts various coordination environments that are dependent of the sodium concentration, giving rise to cyclical gliding of TM layers and P-O phase transitions upon Na extraction/insertion process. The detrimental interlayer-gliding induced phase transformations lead to deteriorated round-trip energy efficiency, rate capability and cycling stability of electrodes. Herein, we demonstrate a shear-resistant interface via the supersaturation of lithium to overcome the interlayer-gliding behavior and inhibit the multiple P-O phase transitions in P2-type Na0.67Mn0.67Ni0.33O2. The results indicate that the nanoscale interface is composed of lithium-enriched O3 nanodomains in the P2 phase matrix, resulting in smooth charge/discharge profiles and superior cycling stability of P2-type Na0.67Mn0.67Ni0.33O2 cathode under a high cut-off voltage of 4.5V. This work highlights the concept of modulating the interfacial shear stress for improving the long-term cycling stability of high-voltage layered cathode materials that suffer from severe phase transformations.

With great superiorities in energy density, rate capability and structural stability, Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (NVPF) has attracted much attentions as cathode of sodium ion battery (SIB), but it also faces challenges on its poor intrinsic electronic conductivity and the controversial de/sodiation mechanism. Herein, a series of Zr-doped NVPF coated by N-doped carbon layer (~5 nm in thickness, homogenously) materials are fabricated by a sol–gel method, and the optimized heteroatom-doping amounts of Zr and N doping improve intrinsic properties on enlarging lattice distance and enhancing electronic conductivity, respectively. Specifically, among all samples of Na3V2−xZrx(PO4)2F3/NC (NVPF-Zr-x/NC, x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, and 0.1), the optimized electrode of NVPF-Zr-0.02/NC delivers high reversible capacities (119.2 mAh g−1 at 0.5 C), superior rate capability (98.1 mA h g−1 at 20 C) and excellent cycling performance. The structural evolution of NVPF-Zr-0.02/NC electrode, in-situ monitored by X-ray diffractometer, follows a step-wise Na-extraction/intercalation mechanism with reversible multi-phase changes, not just a solid-solution-reaction one. Full cells of NVPF-Zr-0.02/NC//hard carbon demonstrate high capacity (99.8 mA h g−1 at 0.5 C), high out-put voltage (3.5 V) and good cycling stability. This work is favorable to accelerate the development of high-performance cathode materials and explore possible redox reaction mechanisms of SIBs.

The research of borate materials as sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) anode is still in the early stages, but the boron polyoxoanions are attracting intense interest due to their low atomic weight and high electronegative features. In this work, FeBO3 was prepared with low-cost raw materials and evaluated as SIBs anode. The FeBO3 shows a high reversible capacity of 328 mAh/g at the current density of 0.4 A/g. In addition, the electrochemical performance of FeBO3 can be improved by carbon coating. The prepared carbon-coated FeBO3 composite has a reversible capacity of 426 mAh/g (at 0.4 A/g) and an outstanding rate capability of 272 mAh/g (at 1.6 A/g). Furthermore, the sodium storage mechanism of FeBO3 was studied by in-situ XRD and ex-situ XPS.

Fluorite-derived A2B2O7 and ABC2O7 structures, i.e. pyrochlore and zirconolite, are promising ceramic matrices for high-level radioactive waste immobilization, especially for minor actinides. Though substitutions of low valent cations were reported by many studies, fewer researches were carried out on the incorporation of high valency elements on these fluorite-derived matrices. In this study, a series of CaZr1-xNdxTi2-xNbxO7 (x = 0.05–1.0) ceramics was investigated to unravel the effect of Nb5+ - one of the main impurities in natural zirconolite, on the evolutions of crystal structure, substitution mechanism and phase transformation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to confirm the existence of Nb5+ in the samples. Fluorite-derived structures (zirconolite-2M, 3T, 4 M and pyrochlore) with increasing Nb5+ contents simultaneously appeared as single-phase or multi-phase assemblages in the matrices, revealed by the combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Almost single-phase zirconolite-2M and pyrochlore were observed only in the ranges of 0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.1 and 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 0.9, respectively. Rietveld structural analysis of the zirconolite-2M phase showed that Nd3+ ions preferably occupied the Zr sites while Nb5+ ions substituted the Ti sites. This result is different from the mechanisms reported in the literature when lower valency (≤+3) was as charge compensator or there was no charge compensator in the REE doped zirconolite (REE = rare earth element). In the pyrochlore structure, the Ca2+, Nd3+ and Zr4+ ions occupied the A sublattice while Ti4+ and Nb5+ ions filled in the B sublattice, and there is charge compensation between A and B sublattices. The results in this study showed a different charge compensation mechanism of the fluorite-derived structures when higher valency elements incorporate into the lattice and will be very helpful for high-level radioactive waste immobilization.

Iron oxides are regarded as promising anodes for both lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity, abundant reserves, and low cost, but they are also facing great challenges due to the sluggish reaction kinetics, low electronic conductivity, huge volume change, and unstable electrode interphases. Moreover, iron oxides are normally prepared at high temperature, forming large particles because of Ostwald ripening, and exhibiting low electronic/ionic conductivity and unfavorable mechanical stability. To address those issues, herein, we have synthesized ultra-small Fe3O4 nanodots encapsulated in layered carbon nanosheets (Fe3O4@LCS), using the coordination interaction between catechol and Fe3+, demonstrating fast reaction kinetics, high capacity, and typical capacitive-controlled electrochemical behaviors. Such Fe3O4@LCS nanocomposites were derived from coordination compounds with layered structures via van der Waals's force. Fe3O4@LCS-500 (annealed at 500 °C) nanocomposites have displayed attractive features of ultra-small particle size (∼5 nm), high surface area, mesoporous and layered feature. When used as anodes, Fe3O4@LCS-500 nanocomposites delivered exceptional electrochemical performances of high reversible capacity, excellent cycle stability and rate performance for both LIBs and KIBs. Such exceptional performances are highly associated with features of Fe3O4@LCS-500 nanocomposites in shortening Li/K ion diffusion length, fast reaction kinetics, high electronic/ionic conductivity, and robust electrode interphase stability.

Lithium–sulfur batteries are attracting more attention due to their high theoretical capacity and energy density. However, they have the problems of short cycling performance, low sulfur loading and shuttle effect; in order to overcome these problems, more efforts have been devoted to the exploration of effective host materials for sulfur confinement. Herein, we report a facile approach for the synthesis of nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NPC) nanosheets, derived from imine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as the host material. In situ nitrogen doping is very uniform due to the inherited nitrogen element distributed uniformly in the COF skeleton. Sulfur-loaded NPC composites can achieve a high sulfur loading amount of 71.8% and enhanced lithium–sulfur battery performance, in terms of a high initial discharge capacity (1398 mA h g−1 at 0.1C) and good cycling properties (reversible capacity of 833 mA h g−1 after 250 cycles). The existence of nitrogen doped carbon nanosheets with a high surface area and controlled porosity can lead to effective immobilization of the polysulfides and simultaneous improvement of the reaction kinetics of the sulfur species. This design strategy provides an extended method for fabricating high performance cathodes for lithium–sulfur batteries.

Compared to inorganic electrodes, organic materials are regarded as promising electrodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the attractive advantages of light elements, molecular-level structural design, fast electron/ion transferring, favorable environmental impacts, and flexible feature, etc. Not only specific capacities but also working potentials of organic electrodes are reasonably tuned by polymerization, electron-donating/withdrawing groups, and multifunctional groups as well as conductive additives, which have attracted intensive attention. However, organic LIBs (OLIBs) are also facing challenges on capacity loss, side reactions, electrode dissolution, low electronic conductivity, and short cycle life, etc. Many strategies have been applied to tackle those challenges, and many inspiring results have been achieved in the last few decades. In this review, we have introduced the basic concepts of LIBs and OLIBs, followed by the typical cathode and anode materials with various physicochemical properties, redox reaction mechanisms, and evolutions of functional groups. Typical charge-discharge behaviors and molecular structures of organic electrodes are displayed. Moreover, effective strategies on addressing problems of organic electrodes are summarized to give some guidance on the synthesis of optimized organic electrodes for practical applications of OLIBs.

Metal fluoride (MF) conversion cathodes theoretically show higher gravimetric and volumetric capacities than Ni- or Co-based intercalation oxide cathodes, which makes metal fluoride-lithium batteries promising candidates for next-generation high-energy-density batteries. However, their high-energy characteristics are clouded by low-capacity utilization, large voltage hysteresis, and poor cycling stability of transition MF cathodes. A variety of reasons is responsible for this: poor reaction kinetics, low conductivities, unstable MF/electrolyte interfaces and dissolution of active species upon cycling. Herein, we combine the synthesis of the metal-organic-framework (MOF) with the low-temperature fluorination to prepare MOF-shaped CoF2@C nanocomposites that exhibit confinement of the CoF2 nanoparticles and efficient mixed-conducting wiring in the produced architecture. The ultrasmall CoF2 nanoparticles (5-20 nm on average) are uniformly covered by graphitic carbon walls and embedded in the porous carbon framework. Within the CoF2@C nanocomposite, the cross-linked carbon wall and interconnected nanopores serve as electron- and ion-conducting pathways, respectively, enabling a highly reversible conversion reaction of CoF2. As a result, the produced CoF2@C composite cathodes successfully restrain the above-mentioned challenges and demonstrate high-capacity utilization of ∼500 mAh g-1 at 0.2C, good rate capability (up to 2C), and long-term cycle stability over 400 cycles. Overall, the presented study not only reports on a simple composite design to achieve high-energy characteristics in CoF2-Li batteries but also may provide a general solution for many other metal fluoride-lithium batteries.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with controllable shapes and sizes show a great potential in Li-S batteries. However, neither the relationship between shapes and specific capacity nor the influence of MOF particle size on cyclic stability have been fully established yet. Herein, MIL-96-Al with various shapes, forming hexagonal platelet crystals (HPC), hexagonal bipyramidal crystals (HBC), and hexagonal prismatic bipyramidal crystals (HPBC) were successfully prepared via co-solvent methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the HBC shape with highly exposed (101) planes can effectively adsorb lithium polysulfides (LPS) during the charge/discharge process. By changing the relative proportion of the co-solvents, HBC samples with different particle sizes were prepared. When these MIL-96-Al crystals were used as sulfur host materials, it was found that those with the smaller size of HBC shape deliver the higher initial capacity. These investigations establish that different crystal planes have different adsorption abilities for LPS, and that the MOF particle size should be considered for a suitable sulfur host. Potassium ion batteries (PIBs) are expected to become the next large-scale energy storage candidates due to its low cost and abundant resources. And the covalent organic framework (COF), with designable periodic organic structure and ability to organize redox active groups predictably, has been considering as the promising organic electrode candidate for PIB. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of the cyano-COF with Co coordination via a facile microwave digestion reaction and its application in the high-energy potassium ion batteries for the first time. The obtained COF-Co material exhibits the enhanced π-π accumulation and abundant defects originated from the Co interaction with the two-dimensional layered sheet structure of COF, which are beneficial for its energy-storage application. Adopted as the inorganic-metal boosted organic electrode for PIBs, the COF-Co with Co coordination can promote the formation of the π-K+ interaction, which could lead to the activation of aromatic rings for potassium-ion storage. Besides, the porous two-dimensional layered structure of COF-Co with abundant defects can also promote the shortened diffusion distance of ion/electron with promoted K+ insertion/extraction ability. Enhanced cycling stability with large reversible capacity (371 mAh g-1 after 400 cycles at 100 mA g-1) and good rate properties (105 mAh g-1 at 2000 mA g-1) have been achieved for the COF-Co electrode.

Due to the adjustable structure and the broad application prospects in energy and other fields, the exploration of porous organic materials [metal-organic polymers (MOPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), etc.] has attracted extensive attention. In this work, an imine-induced metal-organic and covalent organic coexisting framework (Co-MOP@COF) hybrid was designed based on the combination between the amino units from the organic ligands of Co-MOP and the aldehyde groups from COF. The obtained Co-MOP@COF hybrid with layer-decorated microsphere morphology exhibited good electrochemical cycling performance (a large reversible capacity of 1020 mAh g-1 after 150 cycles at 100 mA g-1 and a reversible capacity of 396 mAh g-1 at 500 mA g-1 ) as the anode for Li-ion batteries. The coexisting framework structure endowed the Co-MOP@COF hybrid with more surface area exposed in the exfoliated COF structure, which provided rapid Li-ion diffusion, better electrolyte infiltration, and effective activation of functional groups. Therefore, the Co-MOP@COF hybrid material achieved an enhanced Li storage mechanism involving multi-electron redox reactions, related to the CoII center and organic groups (C=C groups of benzene rings and C=N groups), and furthermore improved electrochemical performance.

Sodium-based rechargeable batteries are very promising energy storage and conversion systems owing to their wide availability and the low cost of Na resources, which is beneficial to large-scale electric energy storage applications in future. In the context of attempting to achieve high-energy densities and low cost, multi-electron reaction materials for both cathodes and anodes are attracting significant attention due to high specific capacities involved. Here, we present a brief review on recently reported multi-electron reaction materials for sodium-based batteries. We mostly concentrate on true multi-electron reactions that involve individually valence changes greater than one per redox center, but in addition include materials in the discussion, which undergo multi-electron processes per formula unit. The theoretical gravimetric and volumetric (expanded state) capacities are studied for a broad range of examples. Then, the practically achievable volumetric energy density and specific energy of Na cells with hard carbon, sodium (Na), and phosphorus (P) anodes are compared. For this purpose, various data are recalculated and referred to the same basis cell. The results show the potential superiority of the cells using multi-electron reaction materials and provide an intuitive understanding of the practically achievable energy densities in future Na-based rechargeable batteries. However, these multi-electron reaction materials are facing several key challenges, which are preventing their high-performance in current cells. In order to overcome them, general strategies from particle design to electrolyte modification are reviewed and several examples in both cathode and anode materials using such strategies are studied. Finally, future trends and perspectives for achieving promising Na-based batteries with better performance are discussed.

Layered O3-type NaMn0.5Ni0.5O2 has been widely investigated as cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, it usually suffers from detrimental phase transformation upon high voltage (>4.1 V) and sluggish Na+ migration kinetics, leading to rapid capacity decay and limited rate capability. Herein, guided by the first principles calculations, a structure modulation strategy to construct mechanically robust transition metal oxides (TMO2) layers for O3-NaMn0.5Ni0.5O2 is realized through Mg/Ti co-substitution. After Mg/Ti co-substitution, the capability of the TMO2 layers framework of O3 phase has been significantly improved to go against and tolerant strains and distortions, and thus remarkably enhanced the electrochemical performance of O3 phase upon high voltage. The as-prepared O3-type NaMn0.45Ni0.45Mg0.05Ti0.05O2 exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 177.7 mAh g−1 at a current density of 0.1 C in a voltage range of 2.0–4.2 V, and the detrimental P3-O1 phase transition upon 4.0 V can be effectively suppressed as well as the Na+ diffusion kinetics is enhanced under high voltage, subsequently leading to improved high voltage cycling-stability and rate-capability.

In this study, Ca4La6-xNdx(SiO4)4(PO4)2O2 (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) apatites were explored for nuclear waste immobilization, and Nd3+ ions were used as the surrogate of radionuclides (such as Am3+, Cm3+, and Pu3+). The synthesized samples conform to the P63/m (176) symmetry in the hexagonal system according to the characterizations by means of X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, and Fourier-transform infrared spectra. Rietveld analyses indicate that both Ca2+ and Ln3+ (La, Nd) cations are located at the M4f and M6h sites, which is different from earlier studies. The M6h sites prefer to be occupied by Ln3+ (La, Nd) cations with higher valence. Besides, the content of the impurity phase Ca3(PO4)2 reduces from 2.815 wt% to 0 with the incorporation of Nd3+ ions. These results demonstrate that apatites possess excellent ability to accommodate radionuclides with various valences and radii at the M4f and M6h sites. Moreover, we investigated the thermal expansion behavior by high-temperature X-ray diffraction. There is no phase transformation in the range of 298-1173 K, and the Ca4La6-xNdx(SiO4)4(PO4)2O2 apatites exhibit lower thermal expansion coefficients than other candidates that have been extensively studied. Furthermore, the thermal expansion coefficient gradually decreases with the accommodation of Nd3+ ions. All the results suggest that apatites are promising candidates for nuclear waste immobilization.

Sodium layered oxides are considered to be cathode candidates with the most potential for large-scale energy storage because of their high reversible capacity and wide availability of sodium resources. A significant hurdle to wide application of these layered oxides lies in simultaneously satisfying high-energy density and long cycle life because of the intrinsic problems associated with their structural irreversibility. Herein, a O3/O'3-P2 core-shell composite that integrates a high specific capacity from O-type Ni-based core and good structural stability from P2-type Mn-rich shell is presented. Multiscale electron microscopy and affiliated spectroscopy analyses reveal that, in addition to the microscale O3/O'3-P2 core-shell structure, a nanoscale coherent P2/O3 intergrown structure can also be identified in the composite. Such well-tailored structures not only constrain the structural damages (microscale cracks) induced by repeated volumetric changes upon desodiation and resodiation but also facilitate fast Na ions diffusion through the exterior P2-type layered structure. This work may provide new clues into the design of high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Transition metal sulfides are regarded as a category of promising electrodes for alkaline ion batteries because of their high theoretical capacities, fast ionic conductivity and low cost, but they also face many challenges on large volume changes, sluggish kinetics and instability of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). To tackle these issues, this work designs iron sulfide/molybdenum disulfide (FeS / MoS2) yolk-shell sphere electrodes coated by few-nanometer thick alumina film. Such alumina film is adopted to minimize side reactions, promote the formation of stable SEI, and enhance the mechanical stability of the electrode. Specifically, when used as anode materials at 100 mA g−1 in Li/Na/K-ion batteries, the coated electrode (ALD-40-E) can deliver reversible capacities of 1007, 570 and 367 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles, respectively, which are substantially larger than those of bare FeS / MoS2 electrode (ALD-0-E: 538, 311 and 213 mAh g−1) and FeS / MoS2 with direct alumina coating on powder surface (ALD-40-P: 429, 116 and 86 mAh g−1). Good electrochemical properties are mainly ascribed to the yolk-shell structure, and the alumina thin film on the electrode, which work synergistically to maintain the electrical contact, facilitate the ion/electron diffusion paths, accommodate volume change and preserve structural stability.

Magnesium aluminate spinel is of great importance for nuclear industry, and its structure, showing a great impact on properties, is sensitive to the composition. In order to explore the stoichiometric effect on structure and properties of spinels, several different spinel compositions with MgO· n Al 2 O 3 ( n = 0.5–2.4) were synthesized via solid state reaction. Synthetic samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and nanoindentation tests. The results of XRD and SEM indicate that the single-phase magnesia alumina spinels have been prepared successfully for the first time ranging from n = 0.667 to n = 1.5, which is beyond the previous reported ranges of n ≥ 0.91. The hardness and modulus decrease with increasing n, implying further that the nonstoichiometric spinel crystal structures are likely to exhibit superior mechanical properties.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIB) are regarded as the most promising competitors to lithium-ion batteries in spite of expected electrochemical disadvantages. Here a “cross-linking” strategy is proposed to mitigate the typical SIB problems. We present a SIB full battery that exhibits a working potential of 3.3 V and an energy density of 180 Wh kg–1 with good cycle life. The anode is composed of cross-linking hollow carbon sheet encapsulated CuP2 nanoparticles (CHCS-CuP2) and a cathode of carbon coated Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (C-NVPF). For the preparation of the CHCS-CuP2 nanocomposites, we develop an in situ phosphorization approach, which is superior to mechanical mixing. Such CHCS-CuP2 nanocomposites deliver a high reversible capacity of 451 mAh g–1 at 80 mA g–1, showing an excellent capacity retention ratio of 91% in 200 cycles together with good rate capability and stable cycling performance. Nanoparticle-based electrode materials have sparked enormous excitement in the sodium-ion battery community because of potentially fast transport kinetics. However, they may suffer from many challenging static and dynamic problems, such as agglomeration of nanoparticles, high contact resistance, volume change, and instability of solid electrolyte interphase. Herein, we develop inter-connected 2D carbon nanosheets in which ultrasmall 0D Sb nanodots are embedded homogenously through a previously unexplored “top-down” strategy. Starting from the laminar structure K3Sb3P2O14, H3Sb3P2O14 nanosheets are exfoliated by ion exchange and then serve as templates for the synthesis of carbon sheets and Sb nanodots. Such combination of multi-dimensional and multi-scale nanostructures in the electrode materials lead to excellent electron/ion transport kinetics and pronounced integrity of the electrode structure on cycling, providing a promising pathway for developing advanced electrode materials in terms of reversibility, rate capability and cycle life.
