Abstract Background Edaravone has been widely used in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) treatment, and a sublingual (SL) tablet has been developed to offer a more convenient alternative for injection. We present a cost-utility analysis to comprehensively evaluate the costs and health outcomes of oral and intravenous edaravone for the treatment of ALS in Chinese medical context. Methods Cost-utility analysis of SL tablets of edaravone versus intravenous edaravone at home was performed by constructing a 20-year Markov model of ALS stage 1–4 and death. The data were extracted from the literature with model assumptions. Typical sensitivity analysis and scenario analysis for administering SL tablets at home versus intravenous tablets at the hospital were performed. Results In the base case analysis, with SL tablets and intravenous injections both at home, the model estimated an additional cost of ¥12,670.04 and an additional 0.034 QALYs over 20 years (life time) of modeling analysis, and the ICER was ¥372,648.24 per QALY. However, in the scenario of intravenous administration at the hospital, SL tablet was demonstrated dominance to intravenous injection. Conclusions Using 3 times the GDP per capita of China in 2023 as the threshold, the SL tablet edaravone was not cost-effective in the context of home treatment for both formulationst, but was dominance to intravenous injection in hospital treatment. The results highlighted the importance of treatment context for health economic analysis.

Abstract Freeze–thaw (F–T) cycling poses a significant challenge in seasonally frozen zones, notably affecting the mechanical properties of soil, which is a critical consideration in subgrade engineering. Consequently, a series of unconfined compressive strength tests were conducted to evaluate the influence of various factors, including fiber content, fiber length, curing time, and F–T cycles on the unconfined compression strength (UCS) of fiber-reinforced cemented silty sand. In parallel, acoustic emission (AE) testing was conducted to assess the AE characteristic parameters (e.g., cumulative ring count, cumulative energy, energy, amplitude, RA, and AF) of the same material under F–T cycles, elucidating the progression of F–T-induced damage. The findings indicated that UCS initially increased and then declined as fiber content increased, with the optimal fiber content identified at 0.2%. UCS increased with prolonged curing time, while increases in fiber length and F–T cycles led to a reduction in UCS, which then stabilized after 6 to 10 cycles. Stable F–T cycles resulted in a strength loss of approximately 30% in fiber-reinforced cemented silty sand. Furthermore, AE characteristic parameters strongly correlated with the stages of damage. F–T damage was segmented into three stages using cumulative ring count and cumulative energy. An increase in cumulative ring count to 0.02 × 104 times and cumulative energy to 0.03 × 104 mv·μs marked the emergence of critical failure points. A sudden shift in AE amplitude indicated a transition in the damage stage, with an amplitude of 67 dB after 6 F–T cycles serving as an early warning of impending failure.

Abstract Structural annotation of small molecules in tandem mass spectrometry has always been a central challenge in mass spectrometry analysis, especially using a miniaturized mass spectrometer for on-site testing. Here, we propose the Transformer enabled Fragment Tree (TeFT) method, which combines various types of fragmentation tree models and a deep learning Transformer module. It is aimed to generate the specific structure of molecules de novo solely from mass spectrometry spectra. The evaluation results on different open-source databases indicated that the proposed model achieved remarkable results in that the majority of molecular structures of compounds in the test can be successfully recognized. Also, the TeFT has been validated on a miniaturized mass spectrometer with low-resolution spectra for 16 flavonoid alcohols, achieving complete structure prediction for 8 substances. Finally, TeFT confirmed the structure of the compound contained in a Chinese medicine substance called the Anweiyang capsule. These results indicate that the TeFT method is suitable for annotating fragmentation peaks with clear fragmentation rules, particularly when applied to on-site mass spectrometry with lower mass resolution.

We previously reported that immunoglobulin superfamily member 9 (IGSF9) as a tumor specific immune checkpoint promoted the tumor immune escape, however, as an adhesion molecule, whether IGSF9 promotes tumor invasion and metastasis has not been reported. Here, the full length, the intracellular domain (ID) not extracellular domain (ECD) of IGSF9 could alter tumor cell morphology from a flat and polygonal shape to elongated strips, suggesting that IGSF9 signal pathway has the potential to mediate epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Real-time PCR and western blotting also showed that the mesenchymal markers were significantly up-regulated, and the epithelial markers were significantly down-regulated in IGSF9 and IGSF9-ID groups. Meanwhile, immunofluorescence showed that β-catenin was clearly translocated into the nucleus in IGSF9 and IGSF9-ID groups. The in vitro and in vivo data showed that IGSF9, IGSF9-ID and ECD could promote tumor invasion and metastasis. Mechanistically, IGSF9-ID could recruit GSK-3β to result in the accumulation and nuclear translocation of β-catenin to trigger EMT. Anti-IGSF9 could significantly inhibit the invasion and metastasis, and IGSF9 is an effective candidate for lung cancer therapy.

Hyperlipidemia refers to the abnormal levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) in peripheral blood circulation. It is a predominant risk factor underlying cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis. Furthermore, it is also one of the most prevalent chronic diseases globally. Liujunzi Decoction is the basic prescription for the treatment of spleen and stomach diseases. It can tonify the spleen and qi, remove dampness, and reduce turbidity. Moreover, it is also clinically used for the treatment of spleen deficiency hyperlipidemia. However, its metabolites and therapeutic effect on spleen deficiency hyperlipidemia have not been comprehensively determined in vitro and in vivo. This study established a rat model of spleen deficiency hyperlipidemia by inducing starvation and satiety disorders, exhaustion swimming, and intragastric administration of the fat emulsion. To identify related metabolite changes and serum lipid composition, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS, PCA, and OPLS-DA lipidological methods were performed. The results demonstrated significant changes in rat's signs during the modeling process, which were consistent with the criteria for the syndrome differentiation of spleen deficiency in traditional Chinese medicine. Furthermore, this study identified 100 potential biomarkers in rat serum, of which 52 were associated with lipid synthesis, such as LPC, PC, PI, PE, PA, Cer, SM, etc. The pathways involved were glycerol phospholipid, sphingomyelin, and glycerol ester metabolisms. After the Liujunzi decoction intervention, 56 potential biomarkers were observed in the high-dose group, alleviating the metabolic spectrum imbalance by reducing metabolite levels. In addition, metabolic pathway disturbances were markedly improved. This study provides references for future studies on Liujunzi decoction and furnishes essential data for assessing the relationships between chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of Liujunzi decoction.

Anemone baicalensis Turcz., a botanical species with a rich historical background in traditional medicine for detoxification and insecticidal applications, possesses a vast, yet largely unexplored, therapeutic potential. This study primarily focused on conducting a qualitative phytochemical analysis of the plant, determining the active ingredient content and antioxidant activity of various solvent extracts. The qualitative phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of 12 different types of phytochemicals within the plant. Utilizing ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, we identified 11 active ingredients in 4 solvent extracts. Notably, the methanol extract was found to contain high concentrations of total carbohydrate, total monoterpenoid, total phenolic, total tannin, and total triterpenoid. In the antioxidant experiment, the methanol extract demonstrated superior scavenging abilities against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical, 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonicacid) diammonium salt, superoxide anion radical, and hydrogen peroxide, outperforming other extracts in chelation experiments aimed at reducing iron and metal ions. Consequently, the methanol extract was selected for further investigation. Subsequent ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadrupole-time of flight-mass spectrometry analysis revealed that the methanol extract contained 39 compounds, primarily phenolic compounds and triterpenoid saponins. Three stability assessments confirmed the extract’s stability under high temperatures, varying pH levels, and simulated gastrointestinal processes. Additionally, oil stability testing demonstrated its antioxidant capacity in extra virgin olive oil and cold-pressed sunflower seed oil media. An oral acute toxicity experiment conducted on mice not only confirmed the absence of acute toxicity in the methanol extract but also provided a dose reference for subsequent gastric protection experiments. Notably, the methanol extract exhibited significant gastroprotective effects against ethanol-induced gastric lesions in rats, as evidenced by histopathological and biochemical analyses. Specifically, the extract reduced levels of malondialdehyde, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase while increasing glutathione, nitric oxide, and catalase, indicating its gastroprotective mechanism. These findings suggest that the methanol extract from the aerial part of Anemone baicalensis could be a promising therapeutic agent for conditions associated with oxidative imbalances. They underscore the plant’s potential therapeutic benefits and offer valuable insights into its antioxidant properties, thereby broadening our understanding of its medicinal potential.

IntroductionPower industry is one of the largest sources of CO2 emissions in China. The Yellow River Basin plays a supportive role in guaranteeing the effective supply of electricity nationwide, with numerous power generation bases. Understanding the drivers and peak of CO2 emissions of power industry in the Yellow River Basin is vital for China to fulfill its commitment to reach carbon emissions peak by 2030.MethodsThe Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) model was employed to explore the drivers to the change of CO2 emissions in power industries of three study areas, including Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regions, Shanxi Province, and Shandong Province in the Yellow River Basin. And Back Propagation (BP) neural network was combined with scenario analysis to empirically predict the trend of the amount of CO2 emitted by power industry (CEPI) from provincial perspective.ResultsCEPI in Inner Mongolia under the scenarios of a low degree of CO2 emissions promotion with a medium degree of CO2 emissions inhibition (LM) and a low degree of CO2 emissions promotion with a high degree of CO2 emissions inhibition (LH) scenario can reach a peak as early as 2030, with the peak value of 628.32 and 638.12 million tonnes, respectively. Moreover, in Shanxi, only CEPI under a low degree of CO2 emissions promotion scenarios (LL, LM, LH) can achieve the peak in 2025 ahead of schedule, with amounts of 319.32, 308.07, and 292.45 million tonnes. Regarding Shandong, CEPI under scenarios of a low degree of CO2 emissions promotion with a high degree of CO2 emissions inhibition (LH) and a medium degree of CO2 emissions promotion with a high degree of CO2 emissions inhibition (MH) could achieve the earliest peak time in 2025, with a peak of 434.6 and 439.36 million tonnes, respectively.DiscussionThe earliest peak time of CEPI in Shandong Province and Shanxi Province is 2025, but the peak of CEPI in Shanxi is smaller than that of Shandong. The peak time of CEPI in Inner Mongolia is relatively late, in 2030, and the peak is larger than that of the other two provinces. The per capita GDP is the most positive driving factor that contributes to the CEPI. Shandong has a strong economy, and its per capita GDP is much higher than Shanxi’s. Therefore, even under the same peak time, the CEPI in Shandong is much higher than that of Shanxi. Inner Mongolia is extensive and sparsely populated, which makes its per capita GDP rank among the top in China. In addition, Inner Mongolia’s coal-based power generation structure and high power generation also contribute to its late CO2 peak time and large CO2 peak.

Androstenedione (ADSD) is one of the widely detected androgens in diverse aquatic environments. However, there were few reports on the molecular mechanism of Chlorella vulgaris exposure to ADSD. In our previous research, we have investigated the genes associated with chlorophyll metabolism in Chlorella vulgaris response to ADSD. In this study, we focus on continuously up-regulated genes to explore the mechanism underlying Chlorella vulgaris resistance to ADSD toxicity. Chlorella vulgaris was exposed to ADSD with five concentration gradients. The continuously up-regulated genes were enriched by Series Test of Cluster (STC) analysis and verified by qRT-PCR. Microalgae Super Oxidase Dimutase (SOD) and Microalgae Malonic dialdehyde (MDA), two indicators of oxidative stress, were determined by ELISA after exposure to ADSD. The results showed that ADSD can stimulate the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and lead to enlargement in the cell body of Chlorella vulgaris. In addition, steroid biosynthesis and oxidoreductase activity processes were consistently up-regulated upon exposure to ADSD. In conclusion, our study highlighted the crucial role of phenotypic modification, hormone synthesis, and redox mechanisms in protecting Chlorella vulgaris cells from the harmful effects of ADSD contamination.

In large-scale intensive farms, dairy goats often undergo frequent estrus synchronization (ES) treatment, which may result in a decline in reproductive performance; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and progesterone (P4)-mediated ES treatment on fertility in dairy goats, while also identifying key metabolic and endocrine mechanisms that influence reproductive performance in does subjected to repeated ES treatment. Forty-eight Saanen does were randomly assigned to two groups (24 goats each) that received ES treatments either thrice fortnightly (3-PMSG) or once (1-PMSG) simultaneously with the third ES treatment of the 3-PMSG group during the breeding season. ES treatment was performed via the intravaginal insertion of a controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device impregnated with 300 mg P4, followed by 300 IU PMSG injections 48 h before CIDR withdrawal. Blood was collected to detect the level of hormones and blood biochemical indices. Additionally, estrus rate, fecundity rate, body weight, size, and lactation performance were measured. The results showed that repeated ES treatment markedly decreased the estrus rate and fecundity rate of goats. Among the does in all groups, there was no substantial difference in follicle stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, melatonin, growth hormone, PMSG, total cholesterol, total protein, and glucose levels, as well as the body weight, body size, and lactation performance. Repeated ES treatment elevated estrogen (E2) levels 36, 48, and 72 h post-CIDR removal; increased P4 upon CIDR insertion; and raised PMSG antibody levels 24, 48, and 72 h post-CIDR removal. The results suggest that elevated anti-PMSG levels are the primary reason for the decline in ES efficiency, and that high E2 and P4 levels at some time points also impair reproductive performance. These findings provide novel insights into the metabolic effects of repeated PMSG stimulation in goats, guiding future reproductive hormone use in breeding practices.

A basalt fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture can improve the engineering properties of asphalt pavement and prolong the service life of the road. However, few studies have systematically examined the composition of asphalt mixtures or the optimal ratio of fiber asphalt mastic suitable for different structural types. The effects of fiber content, filler–asphalt ratio, and asphalt viscosity on the properties of fiber asphalt mastic were investigated by orthogonal experiments to explore the reinforcement effect of basalt fiber on asphalt mastic. The optimal ratio of fiber asphalt mastic suitable for gap-graded and dense-graded asphalt mixtures was obtained by the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) method. Meanwhile, the reinforcement effects of bundled basalt fiber (BBF), flocculated basalt fiber (FBF), polyester fiber (PF), and lignin fiber (LF) on asphalt mastic were compared and analyzed based on the optimal ratio of FBF asphalt mastic. The results showed that the optimal fiber asphalt mastic ratio suitable for gap-graded and dense-graded asphalt mixtures were that fiber content, filler–asphalt ratio, and asphalt viscosity were 3%, 1.8, and 1.1 Pa·s and 2%, 1.0, and 0.7 Pa·s, respectively. Analyzing the properties of different types of fiber asphalt mastic revealed that FBF could effectively enhance the high-temperature rheological properties and low-temperature tensile properties of asphalt mastic compared with other fibers. FBF asphalt mastic improved the asphalt rutting factor by more than four times. The tensile fracture energy of fiber asphalt mastic was more than three times that of the corresponding asphalt. The reinforcement effect of BBF was poor; it was recommended to be broken up before use.

Abstract Background Combining antiangiogenic therapy with radioimmunotherapy is believed to further improve antitumor efficacy, but there is still a lack of evidence to support this. This study aimed to investigate the role of the tumor vascular‐targeted agent famitinib with a combination of radiotherapy and an immune checkpoint inhibitor in murine lung cancer. Methods The effect of VEGFA and HIF1A on clinical prognosis and the tumor immune microenvironment was analyzed using public databases. Enrichment analyses of post‐irradiation gene expression and mRNAs related to immunotherapy efficacy were carried out based on GEO datasets. A C57BL/6 mouse subcutaneous tumor model was used to evaluate the antitumor effects of different treatment schemes. The tumor immunophenotyping was identified by flow cytometry. Results We demonstrated that high level of VEGFA and HIF1A expression in lung cancer was related to poor prognosis and immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. In a mouse model, the triple therapy of famitinib, radiotherapy and immunotherapy had the most dramatic antitumor activity. It significantly increased tumor infiltrating lymphocytes and reversed the immunosuppressive state of the tumor microenvironment in mice. Compared with radioimmunotherapy, the addition of famitinib further promoted the infiltration of CD8+ T cells and M1 type tumor associated macrophages, and reduced the number of myeloid suppressor cells. Therefore, triple therapy converted the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment into an immunostimulatory one. Conclusion Famitinib can synergize with radioimmunotherapy by regulating the tumor immune microenvironment in murine lung cancer.

China’s installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity has surged in recent years, and the intelligent operation of PV power generation is of great significance to improve the generating of PV power stations. As the core of the PV power generation system, PV strings are exposed outdoors all the year round, which is easy to bring safety hazards affecting the safe operation of power stations. Affected by weather conditions, the output of PV strings is fluctuating, random and time-varying, which brings great challenges to fault diagnosis. Therefore, taking the uncertainty of the PV power generation system during its operation into consideration, this paper used the nonparametric kernel density estimation method to fit the probability density curve of the output for PV strings, updated the model with the dynamic time window technology, and eventually established a fault diagnosis method based on the dynamic modeling results of PV strings. Different from the typical real-time diagnosis, by setting a dynamic time window for statistical analysis, the PV strings with degraded performance that fail to be detected in real-time monitoring can be identified, which is conducive to fault diagnosis for PV power stations.

Abstract Background Pinus massoniana Lamb. is the timber species with the widest distribution and the largest afforestation area in China, providing a large amount of timber, turpentine and ecological products. Seasonal drought caused by climate warming severely constrains the quality and growth of P. massoniana forests. WRKY transcription factors play an important role in plant responses to abiotic stress. In this study, the molecular mechanisms by which P. massoniana responds to drought stress were analysed based on the P. massoniana WRKY (PmWRKY) family of genes. Results Forty-three PmWRKYs are divided into three major families, 7 sub-families, and the conserved motifs are essentially the same. Among these 43 PmWRKYs express under drought stress but with different expression patterns in response to stress. PmWRKYs respond to drought stress induced by exogenous hormones of SA, ABA, and MeJA. The expression of PmWRKY6, PmWRKY10, and PmWRKY30 up-regulate in different families and tissues under drought stress, while PmWRKY22 down-regulate. Transgenetic tobaccos of PmWRKY31 are with lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content and higher proline (Pro) content than wild type (WT) tobaccos. In transgenic tobaccos of PmWRKY31, expression levels of related genes significantly improve, and drought tolerance enhance. Conclusions This study analysed the molecular biological characteristics of PmWRKYs and investigated the expression patterns and functions of PmWRKYs in response to drought stress in P. massoniana. The results of this study provide a basis for in-depth research of the molecular functions of PmWRKYs in response to drought stress.

Helicteres angustifolia L. (Helicteres angustifolia) has been commonly used in folk medicine to treat cancer; however, its mechanisms of action remain obscure. In our earlier work, we reported that aqueous extract of H. angustifolia root (AQHAR) possesses attractive anticancer properties. In the present study, we isolated five ethanol fractions from AQHAR and investigated their therapeutic efficacy in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. The results showed that among the five fractions, the 40% ethanol fraction (EF40) containing multiple bioactive compounds exhibited the best selective killing effect on NSCLC cells with no obvious toxicity to normal human fibroblasts. Mechanistically, EF40 reduced the expression of nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), which is constitutively expressed at high levels in many types of cancers. As a result, Nrf2-dependent cellular defense responses are suppressed, leading to the intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Extensive biochemical analyses revealed that EF40 caused cell cycle arrest and apoptosis through activation of the ROS-mediated DNA damage response. Furthermore, treatment with EF40 compromised NSCLC cell migration, as evidenced by the downregulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K (hnRNP-K). In vivo studies using A549 xenografts in nude mice also revealed significant suppression of tumor growth and lung metastasis in the treated group. We propose that EF40 may serve as a potential natural anti-NSCLC drug that warrants further mechanistic and clinical attention.

ObjectiveDiabetes mellitus is a worldwide health problem, and it remains unclarified whether fruit is beneficial in glycemic control. This study aimed to analyze evidence from randomized controlled trials evaluating the effect of fruit consumption on glucose control.MethodsWe searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Ovid, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases from the respective database inception dates to December 30, 2022, to identify randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effects of fruit consumption on glucose control. Two researchers independently screened the studies in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and performed the literature quality evaluation and data extraction. RevMan 5.4 software was used to perform the data analysis.ResultsNineteen randomized controlled trials with 888 participants were included. Fruit consumption significantly decreased the fasting blood glucose concentration (MD -8.38, 95% CI -12.34 to -4.43), but it showed no significant difference in the glycosylated hemoglobin (MD -0.17, 95% CI -0.51 to 0.17). Subgroup analyses further suggested that the consumption of both fresh and dried fruit decreased the fasting blood glucose concentration.ConclusionsIncreasing the fruit intake reduced fasting blood glucose concentration. Therefore, we recommend that patients with diabetes eat more fruits while ensuring that their total energy intake remains unchanged.

Elucidating the response mechanism of variation in vegetation trend to determinant is of great value to environmental resource management, particularly significant in the ecologically fragile area. The Liaohe River Basin (LRB) is a key part of eco-security in China, which has experienced apparent climatic variations and intensified human activities in recent decades. Yet, it still remains not clear about drivers in shaping the spatio-temporal patterns of vegetation growth. Here, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was utilized to investigate the spatio-temporal variation of vegetation coverage from 2000 to 2019. Then, we incorporated partial derivatives analysis to conduct attribution analyses of vegetation greening in light of the meteorological data. The prime findings are as follows: (1) The vegetation coverage in the LRB presented a growing state in the recent 20 years at a rate of 0.0031/a, with significant spatial and temporal heterogeneity due to its slope; (2) The attribution results showed that the average contribution of precipitation, temperature, and solar radiation to the NDVI changes in the LRB was 0.00205/a, 0.00008/a, and −0.00028/a, respectively. (3) The climatic change played the most dominant role in influencing vegetation activities as a result of the relative contributions of 59.68% of NDVI changes (40.32% contributed by anthropogenic activities); (4) LULC dynamics were characterized by an increase in forest land and large-scale ecological afforestation projects, which increase vegetation coverage. Conversely, urbanization adversely affected vegetation variations. Understanding the findings of this study is expected to offer further scientific support and practical implications for monitoring the local vegetation status.

Beta band (12–30 Hz) hypersynchrony within the basal ganglia-thalamocortical network has been suggested as a hallmark of Parkinson’s disease (PD) pathophysiology. Abnormal beta band oscillations are found in the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) and primary motor cortex (M1) and are correlated with dopamine depletion. Dopamine acts locomotion and motor performance mainly through dopamine receptors (D1 and D2). However, the precise mechanism by which dopamine receptors regulate beta band electrophysiological activities between the PPN and M1 is still unknown. Here, we recorded the neuronal activity of the PPN and M1 simultaneously by the administration of the drug (SCH23390 and raclopride), selectively blocking the dopamine D1 receptor and D2 receptor. We discovered that the increased coherent activity of the beta band (12–30 Hz) between M1 and PPN in the lesioned group could be reduced and restored by injecting raclopride in the resting and wheel running states. Our studies revealed the unique role of D2 dopamine receptor signaling in regulating β band oscillatory activity in M1 and PPN and their relationship after the loss of dopamine, which contributes to elucidating the underlying mechanism of the pathophysiology of PD.

Brain metastasis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a common treatment failure mode, and the median survival time of NSCLC patients with brain metastasis is only 1 mon-2 mon. Prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) can delay the occurrence of brain metastasis, but the survival benefits of NSCLC patients are still controversial. It is particularly important to identify the patients who are most likely to benefit from PCI. This article reviews the high risk factors of brain metastasis in NSCLC.

Eleutherococcus sessiliflorus (Rupr. & Maxim.) S.Y.Hu (E. sessiliflorus), a member of the Araliaceae family, is a valuable plant widely used for medicinal and dietary purposes. The tender shoots of E. sessiliflorus are commonly consumed as a staple wild vegetable. The fruits of E. sessiliflorus, known for their rich flavor, play a crucial role in the production of beverages and fruit wines. The root barks of E. sessiliflorus are renowned for their therapeutic effects, including dispelling wind and dampness, strengthening tendons and bones, promoting blood circulation, and removing stasis. To compile a comprehensive collection of information on E. sessiliflorus, extensive searches were conducted in databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, and CNKI. This review aims to provide a detailed exposition of E. sessiliflorus from various perspectives, including phytochemistry and pharmacological effects, to lay a solid foundation for further investigations into its potential uses. Moreover, this review aims to introduce innovative ideas for the rational utilization of E. sessiliflorus resources and the efficient development of related products. To date, a total of 314 compounds have been isolated and identified from E. sessiliflorus, encompassing terpenoids, phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, volatile oils, organic acids and their esters, nitrogenous compounds, quinones, phenolics, and carbohydrates. Among these, triterpenoids and phenylpropanoids are the primary bioactive components, with E. sessiliflorus containing unique 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenoids. These compounds have demonstrated promising properties such as anti-oxidative stress, anti-aging, antiplatelet aggregation, and antitumor effects. Additionally, they show potential in improving glucose metabolism, cardiovascular systems, and immune systems. Despite some existing basic research on E. sessiliflorus, further investigations are required to enhance our understanding of its mechanisms of action, quality assessment, and formulation studies. A more comprehensive investigation into E. sessiliflorus is warranted to delve deeper into its mechanisms of action and potentially expand its pharmaceutical resources, thus facilitating its development and utilization.

In this paper, permeable geopolymer concrete with high compressive strength and permeability is prepared using alkali-activated metakaolin as a slurry, and its mechanical properties are reinforced by adding steel fibers. The influencing factors of the strength, porosity and permeability coefficient of the fiber-reinforced permeable geopolymer concrete, as well as its microstructure and curing mechanism, are determined by conducting an unconfined compressive strength test, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The test results show that, under the water permeability required to meet the specification conditions, when the alkali activator modulus is 1.4 and the activation-to-solid ratio is 0.9, the effect of metakaolin activation is the most obvious, and the unconfined compressive strength of the permeable geopolymer concrete is the highest. Moreover, the paste formed via the alkali activation of metakaolin contains a large number of silica–oxygen and aluminum–oxygen bonds with a dense and crack-free structure, which enables the paste to tightly combine with the aggregates; the strength of the permeable geopolymer concrete is early strength, and its strength at a curing age of 3 days is the highest. The strength at a curing age of 3 days can reach 43.62% of the 28-day strength; the admixture of steel fiber can effectively improve the strength of the permeable concrete, and with an increase in the amount of admixture, the strength of the fiber shows a trend of increasing, and then decreasing. Under the conditions of this test, a volume of steel fiber of 0.3% enables the optimum unconfined compressive strength to be reached.

Abstract Background For patients with ypN2 non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery (NCS), the role of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) is unclear. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of PORT on survival of ypN2 NSCLC patients after NCS. Methods Between 2004 and 2015, patients with ypN2 NSCLC after NCS were filtrated from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the baseline characteristics of the PORT and non‐PORT groups. Kaplan–Meier method and Cox proportional hazards models were adopted to estimate overall survival (OS) and cancer‐specific survival (CSS). Results A total of 257 patients who met the criteria were included in the study. After PSM, 115 patients remained in each group. The survival of patients in the PORT group was significantly better than those in the non‐PORT group. Median OS was 36 months vs. 26 months, and 5‐year OS rate was 40.5% vs. 21.0% (p = 0.002). The median CSS was 38 months vs. 27 months, and the 5‐year CSS rate was 43.7% vs. 22.1% (p 3. Conclusions For patients with ypN2 NSCLC after NCS, PORT significantly improves OS and CSS. These results need to be confirmed by further randomized studies.

An electric wheel hybrid power system is designed for driving a large single-aisle passenger aircraft during the take-off and ground taxi phases, which consists of an APU, an energy storage system, and a motor. In the taxi phase, the electric wheel hybrid power system works alone, and the turbofan engine does not work, reducing fuel consumption and pollution emissions. During the take-off rolling phase, the electric wheel hybrid power system and turbofan engine work together to reduce the thrust requirement of the turbofan engine. This article establishes an aircraft kinematic model, hybrid power system model, and a mechanical wheel model. The feasibility of the collaborative work of the electric wheels and the turbofan engines is verified by simulations. By utilizing the established hybrid system of electric motor wheels, the fuel consumption can be reduced, and the emissions of CO, HC, and NOX can also be diminished to varying degrees. The input of motor power leads to lower turbine inlet temperature, thereby enhancing the turbofan engine’s service life by approximately 4.3% and saving operational costs.

To explore the effect of snow-melting agents on the glass fiber-reinforced cemented soil under freezing-thawing cycles, three widely used snow-melting agents, including potassium acetate, magnesium chloride, and sodium sulfate, were used in this article. The effects of snow-melting agent types on the apparent damage, mass loss, and mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced cemented soil under freezing-thawing cycles were analyzed through salt freezing and unconfined compressive strength tests. The results show that the snow-melting effect of potassium acetate is the best, the snow-melting effect of magnesium chloride is the second, and the snow-melting effect of sodium sulfate is the worst. Notably, as the number of freezing-thawing cycles increases, the strength of the test block decreases to varying degrees. After the fifth freezing-thawing cycle, the strength of the block without fiber decreased by 61.30%, 70.22%, and 81.58% in clear water, potassium acetate, and magnesium chloride solution, respectively, while the test block in sodium sulfate solution lost its bearing capacity. A series of studies proved that the snow-melting agent with sodium sulfate as the main component has the most apparent erosion effect on the cemented soil, followed by magnesium chloride, and the erosion effect of potassium acetate is the weakest. The incorporation of glass fiber can effectively improve the resistance of the cemented soil under the action of various salt solution erosion and freezing-thawing coupling and has a significant effect on slowing the development of surface cracks, improving peak strength, and reducing the mass loss rate. This research will provide theoretical support for the design of subgrade and the selection of snow-melting agents in cold areas.

BackgroundSignificant progress has been made in the investigation of neoadjuvant immune-chemoradiotherapy (NICRT) and neoadjuvant immune-chemotherapy (NICT) on the outcomes of esophageal cancer patients. To summarize the current developments, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant immunotherapy combined with chemoradiotherapy or chemotherapy.MethodsA search strategy of prospective studies on esophageal cancer receiving neoadjuvant immunotherapy was predefined to scan PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and additional major conferences for prospective studies. Efficacy was assessed by pathological complete response (pCR), major pathological response (MPR), and R0 resection rates. Safety was evaluated based on the incidence of grade ≥ 3 treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs), neoadjuvant therapy completion rate, surgical resection rate, and surgical delay rate. Differences between the NICRT and NICT groups were also analyzed.ResultsA total of 38 studies qualified for the analysis. The pooled pCR, MPR, and R0 resection rates were 30, 58, and 99%, respectively. The pCR and MPR in the NICRT vs. NICT group were 38% vs. 28% (p=0.078) and 67% vs. 57% (p=0.181), respectively. Abstract Background We aimed to clarify the benefits of the addition of rh‐endostatin into concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) versus CCRT alone for locally advanced non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by a meta‐analysis. Methods PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Wanfang and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were systematically screened from inception to November 2020 using the prespecified terms. Prospective trials (evaluating or) comparing the efficacy of endostar combined with CCRT and CCRT for locally advanced NSCLC were included. The primary endpoints were risk ratios (RRs) for objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR). The secondary endpoints were RRs for overall survival (OS) and adverse events (AEs). Results Ten studies with 716 patients were included in this meta‐analysis. Endostar combined with CCRT significantly improved ORR and DCR compared with CCRT. The RRs of ORR and DCR for endostar combined with CCRT versus CCRT were 1.263 (95% CI: 1.137–1.403, p 0.05). Conclusion Endostar combined with CCRT is associated with significantly higher ORR, DCR and survival rate than CCRT with similar incidences of main adverse events in NSCLC.

Land use/land cover (LULC) change has greatly altered ecosystem carbon storage capacity and can eventually profoundly impact global climate change. Characterizing the LULC change and its impact on ecosystem carbon storage in coastal areas is greatly significant to comprehensively understanding the influences of human activities on ecosystems. Based on LULC data, this paper combined CA-Markov and InVEST models to evaluate the past, present, and future LULC change and its impact on ecosystem carbon storage in coastal areas of China. The results showed that past LULC change in coastal areas can be divided into two stages: (I) accelerated evolution stage (1980–2010), and (II) stable evolution stage (2010–2020). Changes in LULC types have led to a downward trend in ecosystem carbon storage, with a cumulative loss of 0.39 Pg and 0.15 Pg during the two stages, respectively. Spatially, carbon storage presented a high-low-high spatial distribution pattern from north to south. Temporally, areas with a rapid urbanization process exhibited more obvious changes in carbon storage dynamics. Compared with the natural change scenario, the areas with LULC types conversion under the ecological conservation scenario in 2050 will be lower due to the limitation of ecological protection, and it caused carbon storage reduction will slow down. Rapid LULC dynamics, that a large area of farmland, unused land and, water have been converted into construction land, reduced the carbon sequestration capacity of the ecosystem. This study will provide reliable references and precise data support for coastal management and decision-making.

Pinus massoniana Lamb. is the timber species with the widest distribution and the largest afforestation area in China, providing a large amount of timber, turpentine and ecological products. but low temperature limits its growth and geographical distribution. Physiological and molecular studies can well explain the mechanism of P. massoniana response to low temperature. In this study, physiological and biochemical indexes, cell morphology, lignin content, gene regulatory networks, and gene expression patterns of different P. massoniana varieties (cold-tolerant and cold-sensitive) were studied from physiological, biochemical, and molecular perspectives. The results indicated that under low-temperature stress, the cold-tolerant cultivar maintained high contents of osmoregulatory substances, and the root morphology and structure remained intact. In the initial stage of low-temperature stress, the number of differentially expressed genes was 7148, and with the extension of stress time, the number of differentially expressed genes decreased to 1991. P. massoniana might direct its responses to low temperature by regulating phenylpropane metabolism, starch and sucrose metabolism, hormone signaling pathways, and transcription factors. BAM, 4CL, CCoAOMT, PRX5, WRKYs, and hormone synthesis related genes play important roles. P. massoniana cultivars may vary in response mechanisms. In this study, physiological and analytical techniques were used to study the root tip response mechanism of Masson’s pine to low temperature stress. The results of this study lay a foundation for in-depth research on the molecular functions of P. massoniana under low-temperature stress conditions.

In order to improve the mechanical properties and deformation characteristics of permeable concrete, glass fiber was added to this type of concrete. Based on an unconfined compressive strength test, non-contact full-field strain measurement system, and scanning electron microscopy test, the effects of aggregate particle composition, shaking time, fly ash content, fiber length, and fiber content on the strength and permeability of permeable concrete were studied. The results show that the strength and water permeability of permeable concrete are negatively correlated with an increase in shaking time. When the aggregate particle size is 5–10 mm, the permeable concrete has both good strength and permeability. Proper incorporation of fly ash improves the compactness inside the structure. The influence of different lengths of glass fiber on the strength of permeable concrete first increases and then decreases, and the permeable property decreases. With the same fiber length, the strength increases first and then decreases with an increase in the content, while the porosity and water permeability coefficient decrease. Under the test conditions, when the length of glass fiber is 6 mm, and the dosage is 2 kg/m3, the strength performance of permeable concrete is the best, and the permeability effect is good at the same time.

In this paper, two types of adsorption materials SA-C-Fe and SA-C-Fe(C) were prepared using bagasse biochar produced by one-step microwave pyrolysis and activation for Cr(VI) removal of wastewater. The adsorption materials were characterized, and Cr(VI) adsorption performance, kinetics and thermodynamics on adsorption materials were studied. Results show that microwave pyrolysis/activation contributes to developed pore structure and abundant active functional groups, resulting in high Cr(VI) adsorption capacities. The optimal preparation conditions for biochar is: microwave power 500 W, ZnCl2/bagasse ratio 2.5:1 and pyrolysis/activation time 15 min, and the specific surface area of biochar is 1,787.64 m2/g. The Cr(VI) adsorption of the two materials is more in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption process is dominated by chemical adsorption. The static removal experiment of Cr(VI) using SA-C-Fe and SA-C-Fe(C) has the best removal effect at pH = 2, and the whole adsorption process is more in line with the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model. Calculated by the pseudo-two-order kinetic model and the Langmuir-Freundlich isothermal model, the maximum adsorption rate for Cr(VI) of SA-C-Fe and SA-C-Fe(C) are 211.87 mg/g and 388.92 mg/g, respectively. The removal process is mainly dominated by three mechanisms: electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange and redox reactions. The improvement of Cr(VI) adsorption capacity is attributed to more developed pore structure. The results offer beneficial reference for the application of low-cost carbon-based adsorption materials for pollutants separation, and effectively realize the utilization of bagasse pyrolysis by-products.

Abstract Background In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) and cardiac‐related mortality in patients with stage IIIA‐N2 non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Methods The United States (US) population based on the SEER database was searched for cardiac‐related mortality among patients with stage IIIA‐N2 NSCLC. Cardiac‐related mortality was compared between the PORT and Non‐PORT groups. Accounting for mortality from other causes, Fine and Gray's test compared cumulative incidences of cardiac‐related mortality between both groups. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed using the competing risk model. Results From 1988 to 2016, 7290 patients met the inclusion criteria: 3386 patients were treated with PORT and 3904 patients with Non‐PORT. The five‐year overall incidence of cardiac‐related mortality was 3.01% in the PORT group and 3.26% in the Non‐PORT group. Older age, male sex, squamous cell lung cancer, earlier year of diagnosis and earlier T stage were independent adverse factors for cardiac‐related mortality. However, PORT use was not associated with an increase in the hazard for cardiac‐related mortality (subdistribution hazard ratio [SHR] = 0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.78–1.24, p = 0.91). When evaluating cardiac‐related mortality in each time period, the overall incidence of cardiac‐related mortality was decreased over time. There were no statistically significant differences based on PORT use in all time periods. Conclusions With a median follow‐up of 25 months, no significant differences were found in cardiac‐related mortality between the PORT and Non‐PORT groups in stage IIIA‐N2 NSCLC patients.

Abstract Climate patterns, cropping systems, and agricultural technologies have greater diversity among various regions in China. Knowledge of the spatial–temporal patterns of solar radiation during the maize growing season is essential for farmers and extension technicians in their optimization of cropping choices and development of adaptation strategies for climate change. In this study, based on the observed solar radiation in six subregions of China, we analyzed the spatial distributions and temporal trends of incident solar radiation (SRi), beam solar radiation (SRb), and diffuse solar radiation (SRd) during 1961–2014. From 1961 to 1984, the annual SRi in most areas showed a downward trend, with a median value of −27.8 MJ m−2 year−1, which is primarily due to a decrease in SRb. However, after 1985, 76% of locations had reversed to brightening. This finding is primarily due to an increase in SRd. The trends in SRi during the whole growing season (WGS) of maize changed by −12.4% to 18.3% during the past 30 years, and 74% of the selected locations showed an increasing trend. At most of the stations, SRb showed a decreasing trend during the WGS, and SRd showed an increasing trend. The trends of SRi, SRb, and SRd during the vegetative period and reproductive period of maize have generally followed a trend similar to the WGSs. Therefore, we conclude that annual solar radiation changed from dimming to brightening from 1961 to 2014 in China. Solar brightening occurred during the maize growing season, which was mainly caused by an increase in diffuse radiation.

In recent years, federated GBDTs have gradually replaced traditional GBDTs, and become the focus of academic research. They are used to solve the task of structured data mining. Aiming at the problems of information leakage, insufficient model accuracy and high communication cost in the existing schemes of horizontal federated GBDTs, this paper proposes an algorithm of gradient boosting decision trees based on horizontal federated learning, that is, secure and efficient FL for GBDTs (SeFB). The algorithm uses locality sensitive hashing (LSH) to build a tree by collecting similar information of instances without exposing the original data of participants. In the stage of updating the tree, the algorithm aggregates the local gradients of all data participants and calculates the global leaf weights, so as to improve the accuracy of the model and reduce the communication cost. Finally, the experimental analysis shows that the algorithm can protect the privacy of the original data, and the communication cost is low. At the same time, the performance of the unbalanced binary data set is evaluated. The results show that SeFB algorithm compared with the existing schemes of horizontal federated GBDTs, the accuracy is improved by 2.53% on average.

Benefiting from low cost, high tensile strength, chemical stability, and great resistance to temperature, alkaline, and acids, it is a reasonable and valuable technology to use basalt fiber (BF) as an admixture to optimize building materials. So far, the challenge is still to master the engineering performance of BF-reinforced materials, especially poor subgrade soils. To this end, this paper carried out a series of unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests, splitting tensile strength (STS) tests, and scanning environmental microscope (SEM) tests to study the mechanical properties and microstructure mechanism of BF-reinforced subgrade cemented silty sand with different fiber contents and curing times. The aims of this research were: (i) the UCS and STS of basalt fiber reinforced uncemented silty sand (BFUSM) and basalt fiber reinforced cemented silty sand (BFCSM) both increased with the increase of curing time and the strength reached the maximum value after curing for 28 days; (ii) the optimal fiber content was 0.2%, and a good linear correlation existed between UCS and STS; (iii) from the microscopic point of view, the combination of BF and cement could combine the physical action of fiber reinforcement and the chemical action of cement hydration reaction to form a fiber-cement-soil skeleton structure to improve the strength of silty sand and the improvement effect after working together was better than separately incorporated BF or cement; and (iv) the corresponding developed multiple nonlinear regression (MNLR) models which can well predict UCS and STS of BFUSM and BFCSM were established.

Abstract Background Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome characterized by left ventricular dysfunction or elevated intracardiac pressures. Research supports that microRNAs (miRs) participate in HF by regulating targeted genes. Hence, the current study set out to study the role of HDAC3-medaited miR-18a in HF by targeting ADRB3. Methods Firstly, HF mouse models were established by ligation of the left coronary artery at the lower edge of the left atrial appendage, and HF cell models were generated in the cardiomyocytes, followed by ectopic expression and silencing experiments. Numerous parameters including left ventricular posterior wall dimension (LVPWD), interventricular septal dimension (IVSD), left ventricular end diastolic diameter (LVEDD), left ventricular end systolic diameter (LVESD), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS), left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP), left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LEVDP), heart rate (HR), left ventricular pressure rise rate (+ dp/dt) and left ventricular pressure drop rate (-dp/dt) were measured in the mice. In addition, apoptosis in the mice was detected by means of TUNEL staining, while RT-qPCR and Western blot analysis were performed to detect miR-18a, HDAC3, ADRB3, cMyb, MMP-9, Collagen 1 and TGF-β1 expression patterns. Dual luciferase reporter assay validated the targeting relationship between ADRB3 and miR-18a. Cardiomyocyte apoptosis was determined by means of flow cytometry. Results HDAC3 and ADRB3 were up-regulated and miR-18a was down-regulated in HF mice and cardiomyocytes. In addition, HDAC3 could reduce the miR-18a expression, and ADRB3 was negatively-targeted by miR-18a. After down-regulation of HDAC3 or ADRB3 or over-expression of miR-18a, IVSD, LVEDD, LVESD and LEVDP were found to be decreased but LVPWD, LVEF, LVFS, LVSP, + dp/dt, and −dp/dt were all increased in the HF mice, whereas fibrosis, hypertrophy and apoptosis of HF cardiomyocytes were declined. Conclusion Collectively, our findings indicate that HDAC3 silencing confers protection against HF by inhibiting miR-18a-targeted ADRB3.

Northeast China (NEC) is one of the major maize production areas in China. Agro-climatic resources have obviously changed, which will seriously affect crop growth and development in this region. It is important to investigate the contribution of climate change adaptation measures to the yield and resource use efficiency to improve our understanding of how we can effectively ensure high yield and high efficiency in the future. In this study, we divided the study area into five accumulated temperature zones (ATZs) based on growing degree days (GDD). Based on the meteorological data, maize data (from agro-meteorological stations) and the validated APSIM-Maize Model, we first investigated the spatial distributions and temporal trends of maize potential yield of actual planted cultivars, and revealed the radiation use efficiency (RUE) and heat resource use efficiency (HUE) from 1981 to 2017. Then according to the potential growing seasons and actual growing seasons, we identified the utilization percentages of radiation (PR) resource and heat resource (PH) for each ATZ under potential production from 1981 to 2017. Finally, we quantified the contributions of cultivar changings to yield, PR and PH of maize. The results showed that during the past 37 years, the estimated mean potential yield of actual planted cultivars was 13 649 kg ha–1, ranged from 11 205 to 15 257 kg ha–1, and increased by 140 kg ha–1 per decade. For potential production, the mean values of RUE and HUE for the actual planted maize cultivars were 1.22 g MJ–1 and 8.58 kg (°C d)–1 ha–1. RUE showed an increasing tendency, while HUE showed a decreasing tendency. The lengths of the potential growing season and actual growing season were 158 and 123 d, and increased by 2 and 1 d per decade. PR and PH under potential production were 82 and 86%, respectively and showed a decreasing tendency during the past 37 years. This indicates that actual planted cultivars failed to make full use of climate resources. However, results from the adaptation assessments indicate that, adoption of cultivars with growing season increased by 2–11 d among ATZs caused increase in yield, PR and PH of 0.6–1.7%, 1.1–7.6% and 1.5–8.9%, respectively. Therefore, introduction of cultivars with longer growing season can effectively increase the radiation and heat utilization percentages and potential yield.

Most IoT devices cannot afford to be a blockchain node due to the high computation and storage loads. Thus, the blockchain is usually deployed on one delegate node, e.g., the edge device or cloud, which may encounters three drawbacks: (1) The delegate node becomes the single failure point when the number of delegate notes are limited. (2) The delegate node replicating the blockchain data can lead to privacy information leak. (3) The delegate node is vulnerable to the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. To tackle these drawbacks, we consider to minimize the redundant of blockchain to make the IoT devices as the specialized blockchain nodes. In this paper, we integrate a permissioned blockchain (HLF), an attribute-based access control (ABAC) and an identity-based signature (IBS) to build a security, lightweight, and cross-domain blockchain-based IoT access control system. Specifically, we divided the IoT system into different function domains, named IoT domains. Then, we establish a local blockchain ledger for each IoT domain to enable more IoT devices as blockchain nodes. The local blockchain ledger records the IoT domain entities' attributes, policy files' digests, and access decisions. Meanwhile, we use the channel technology of HLF to realize cross-domain access and use the IBS to filter the legal access requests for each IoT domain to prevent DDoS attacks. We also design a policy decision point (PDP) selection algorithm that select multiple IoT devices (blockchain nodes) to achieve the real-time distributed policy decisions (off-chain). Finally, we implement and evaluate the proposed system to demonstrate its practicality.

Abstract Background The outbreak and pandemic of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 caused significant threaten to global public health and economic consequences. It is extremely urgent that global people must take actions to develop safe and effective preventions and therapeutics. Nanobodies, which are derived from single‑chain camelid antibodies, had shown antiviral properties in various challenge viruses. In this study, multivalent nanobodies with high affinity blocking SARS-CoV-2 spike interaction with ACE2 protein were developed. Results Totally, four specific nanobodies against spike protein and its RBD domain were screened from a naïve VHH library. Among them, Nb91-hFc and Nb3-hFc demonstrated antiviral activity by neutralizing spike pseudotyped viruses in vitro. Subsequently, multivalent nanobodies were constructed to improve the neutralizing capacity. As a result, heterodimer nanobody Nb91-Nb3-hFc exhibited the strongest RBD-binding affinity and neutralizing ability against SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses with an IC50 value at approximately 1.54 nM. Conclusions The present study indicated that naïve VHH library could be used as a potential resource for rapid acquisition and exploitation of antiviral nanobodies. Heterodimer nanobody Nb91-Nb3-hFc may serve as a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of COVID-19.

Provenance identification of the clastic sediments is critical for paleoenvironmental and morphological reconstruction on the estuarine coast. The North Bohai Coast (NBC) receives tremendous sediments mainly from the Liaohe and Daling fluvial systems. However, the detailed morphological evolution is still unclear due to the lack of precise discrimination of the sediment provenance. In this study, the clay mineralogy of the coastal sediments in the NBC was investigated to determine variation of the fine-grained sediment sources in the last century. The clay mineral content in the modern riverine sediments in the NBC was used to model sedimentary contribution from different fluvial systems. 210Pb and 137Cs radioactivity was measured to constrain the timing of centennial marine–terrestrial sedimentation. The migration of coastline and river channels in the NBC during the last hundred years was reconstructed by digitalizing the historical charts and satellite image. 210Pb following the CIC model and 137Cs dating are considered not applicable for the dated cores, whilst 210Pb using the CRS model yields acceptable chronologic results. Non-linear modeling results of the clay mineral composition are consistent with the lithological and coastal geomorphologic constraints. The outcome of provenance discrimination indicates that clay minerals in western and eastern NBC are mainly derived from the Daling and Liaohe rivers, respectively. In the middle NBC, the Daling River input was relatively major during the 1910s, 1940s, 1980s, and 2000s. The increase of Daling River input in the first two periods resulted from progradation and river channel migration, respectively. The fluvial contribution from the Liaohe River was major in the middle NBC during 1920–1940 and 1950–1970 AD, which attributes to rapid progradation of the Liaohe River and channel migration of the Daling River, respectively.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by aberrant discharge patterns and exaggerated oscillatory activity within basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits. We have previously observed substantial alterations in spike and local field potential (LFP) activities recorded in the thalamic parafascicular nucleus (PF) and motor cortex (M1), respectively, of hemiparkinsonian rats during rest or catching movements. This study explored whether the mutual effects of the PF and M1 depended on the amplitude and phase relationship in their identified neuron spikes or group rhythmic activities. Microwire electrode arrays were paired and implanted in the PF and M1 of rats with unilateral dopaminergic cell lesions. The results showed that the identified PF neurons exhibited aberrant cell type-selective firing rates and preferential and excessive phase-locked firing to cortical LFP oscillations mainly at 12–35 Hz (beta frequencies), consistent with the observation of identified M1 neurons with ongoing PF LFP oscillations. Experimental evidence also showed a decrease in phase-locking at 0.7–12 Hz and 35–70 Hz in the PF and M1 circuits in the hemiparkinsonian rats. Furthermore, anatomical evidence was provided for the existence of afferent and efferent bidirectional reciprocal connectivity pathways between the PF and M1 using an anterograde and retrograde neuroanatomical tracing virus. Collectively, our results suggested that multiple alterations may be present in regional anatomical and functional modes with which the PF and M1 interact, and that parkinsonism-associated changes in PF integrate M1 activity in a manner that varies with frequency, behavioral state, and integrity of the dopaminergic system.

The problem of gas-liquid (two-phase) flow regime identification in an S-shaped riser using an ultrasonic sensor and convolutional recurrent neural networks (CRNN) is addressed. This research systematically evaluates three different schemes with four CRNN-based classifiers over fourteen experiments. Four metrics are used as the evaluation criteria: categorical accuracy, categorical cross-entropy, mean square error (MSE), and computation graph complexity. Compared with existing results, a compatible performance is achieved while considerably reducing the model complexity. The testing and validation accuracies were 98.13% and 98.06%, while the complexity decreased by 98.4% (only 117,702 parameters). The proposed approach is i) accurate, low complexity, and non-intrusive and hence suitable for industry, and ii) could provide a benchmark for flow regime identification.

With the application of wireless body sensing network to real-time monitoring of biological signals, compressed sensing (CS) has become a promising signal acquisition technology that can extend monitoring time, reduce equipment cost and decrease power consumption. This paper makes a comparative study on the acquisition of heart sound (HS) signals by CS, compares and analyzes the performance of wavelet basis, reconstruction algorithms and frames. Among a large number of experimental data records, the reconstruction performance under different compression rates is comparatively studied, and the suitable wavelet basis, reconstruction algorithm and signal frame size for HS acquisition are obtained. The presented performance records and comparative analyses can give benchmarks for future academic research, and are also believed to be beneficial for practical applications.

The dynamic positioning system is a system that ships rely on their own propulsion devices to maintain position and course. Pod propulsion was more and more installed in dynamic positioning unmanned surface vessels because it can rotate 360 degrees freely. The maximum disturbance of unmanned surface vessel dynamic positioning comes from the forces and moments generated by the ocean wind, wave and current. In order to improve its accuracy of disturbance rejection, the mathematical model of the vessel was established according to the special structure of pod propulsion ship, and the calculations of the forces and moments of wind, wave and current are given. Then, the sliding mode controller based on approach law and adaptive backstepping were designed, and optimal controller based on cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) was further designed. The tracking differentiator was added to eliminate the large chattering in the initial stage of the system. Finally, the simulation verification was carried out. It can be seen from the results that the control law designed has better control effects than traditional sliding mode control and can realize dynamic positioning of pod driven unmanned surface vessel under certain disturbances.

The trajectory data of vessel AIS (automatic identification system) has important theoretical and application value for information supporting decisions. However, large sizes lead to difficulties in storing, querying, and processing. To solve the problems of high compression ratio and longtime consumption of the existing online trajectory compression algorithm, an SPM (scan-pick-move) trajectory data compression algorithm added sliding window is proposed. In order to better compress vessel trajectory data regarding compression efficiency, the sliding window is added to the classical SPM algorithm. In order to reduce trajectory data storage space, the maximum offset distance reference trajectory point is used as the criterion of whether the current trajectory point can be compressed. In this paper, the multi-dimensional space-time characteristics of trajectory data, such as distance error, compression ratio and compression time, are selected to evaluate the trajectory compression method from three levels: geometric characteristics, motion characteristics and compression efficiency. Compared with the existing SPM trajectory data compression algorithm, parallel experiments are conducted based on AIS data gathered over the duration of a month in the Japan Osaka Bay. The SPM trajectory compression algorithm added sliding window can significantly reduce the compression time and outperforms other existing trajectory compression algorithms in term of average compression error at high compression strengths. Also, the proposed method has high compression efficiency in the range of commonly used compression thresholds.

Abstract Water‐limited environments account for half of the earth's land surface, and dryland agriculture acreage is projected to expand due to climate changes. Examining typical dryland yield potentials and yield improvement measures is crucial for developing future dryland crop production systems. This case study used crop modeling to analyze dryland maize yield potential (YPd), farmers’ yield potential (YPf), and actual farm yields (Ya) from 1990 to 2015 in three counties in western Kansas (i.e., Thomas, Greeley, and Finney in the U.S. Great Plains region). The calibrated APSIM‐Maize model along with actual yields was used to estimate yield gaps attributed to: (a) agronomic factors (YG1 = YPd − YPf) and (b) socioeconomic constraints (YG2 = YPf − Ya). Observed climate conditions during maize‐growing seasons showed warming, brightening, and drying trends for all three counties in western Kansas from 1990 to 2015. Our results showed that the current actual farm yields (Ya) in western Kansas represented only 34%, 32%, and 28% of YPd in Thomas, Greeley, and Finney counties, respectively, indicating significant exploitable yield gaps. Agronomic factors (YG1) contributed the greatest to the yield gap in Greeley and Finney counties, whereas socioeconomic constraints (YG2) offered the greatest opportunity for improvement in Thomas county. Our analysis suggested that improving agronomic management could be a greater priority for further yield improvement in Greeley county, but selecting an appropriate hybrid was a greater priority in Finney county.

The horseshoe vortex system at the leading edge of a low-pressure turbine (LPT) has unsteady flow characteristics, and the flow field in the downstream cascade channel also has unsteady characteristics. In this study, CFD simulations are performed with the help of commercial software CFX, and experimental checks are performed using a fan-shaped cascade test bench to investigate the flow characteristics of the endwall of the PACKB blade type of a high-lift LPT under the same incoming Reynolds number and two incoming boundary layer thickness conditions. The obtained results show that there are different flow alteration characteristics and alteration frequencies of the horseshoe vortex system, among which the vortex system with a thicker boundary layer is larger in size and less spaced from each other, which is more likely to induce the fusion of vortex systems. The centrifugal instability causes the instability of the horseshoe vortex system, and the instability frequency is inversely proportional to the thickness of the boundary layer. With two inlet boundary layers, the instability frequencies of the vortex system are 125 Hz and 175 Hz, respectively, and the ratio of the frequency to the thickness of the boundary layer is reciprocal to each other. The stimulation effect of the unstable horseshoe vortex system on the downstream secondary flow intensity is greater than that of the steady state. The thin boundary layer case generates a greater unsteady loss in the cascade channel than the thick boundary layer case due to the poor stability of the vortex system.

BackgroundBrain metastasis (BM) is one of the most common failure patterns of pIIIA-N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after complete resection. Prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) can improve intracranial control but not overall survival. In order to clarify the influence of the municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSWI BA) content on the pavement performance of the cement-stabilized macadam, the MSWI BA with 0%, 25%, 38% and 50% content was used instead of fine aggregates. To explore the feasibility of building pavement base with cement stabilized MSWI BA, the cement-stabilized MSWI BA mixture was prepared by mixing the MSWI BA at the mass fraction of 50%, 75% and 100% with fine crushed stuff. Subsequently, the compaction test and 7 days unconfined compression test were conducted with 4%, 5% and 6% cement dosage. The compaction test, unconfined compressive strength test, splitting strength test, compressive resilient modulus test and frost resistance tests were carried out based on the long-age samples with an optimal cement dosage of 5%. Furthermore, the unconfined compressive constitutive model was established based on the test data. Afterwards, the test road was built to measure the practical effect of MSWI BA on road construction. Meanwhile, energy-saving and emission-reduction analyses were conducted on the MSWI BA road. The results showed that under 5% cement dosage, the mechanical properties and frost resistance of the mixture with different MSWI BA content both satisfied the specification requirements; during the construction, the appropriate MSWI BA content could be selected according to the requirements of different highway grades in the specification. The established segmented constitutive model could well simulate the stress–strain relationship of the mixture in the compressive process. Using cement-stabilized MSWI BA to build the pavement base was feasible, which provided not only an important reference for the engineering design but also had positive significance for promoting carbon peaking, carbon neutrality and sustainable development of highway engineering construction.

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of additional radiotherapy after endoscopic resection (ER) for stage I esophageal carcinoma (EC) with high-risk factors. Materials and methods: Patients with stage cT1N0M0 EC who underwent ER and additional radiotherapy between January 2010 and August 2019 at our institution were retrospectively included. Overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), local control rate, regional control rate, common acute toxicities, esophageal stricture, and dysphagia were analyzed. Results: Thirty-one consecutive patients were included in the study. The median age was 62 years (range, 49-78). Thirty patients (96.8%) had squamous cell carcinoma, and one patient (3.2%) had adenosquamous cell carcinoma. Twenty-six patients (83.9%) had submucosal invasion, 15 patients (48.4%) had lymphovascular invasion, and one patient (3.2%) had a venous invasion. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates were 100.0%, 86.9%, and 68.5%, respectively. The corresponding DFS rates were 100.0%, 85.2%, and 75.8%, respectively. The corresponding CSS rates were 100.0%, 89.8%, and 78.6%, respectively. The local and regional control rates were 100.0% and 93.5%, respectively. No grade 4-5 acute toxicities were observed. Fifteen patients (48.4%) were endoscopically diagnosed with esophageal strictures after ER. At the last follow-up, 28 patients (90.5%) were able to eat a regular diet, one patient (3.2%) could eat a soft diet, one needed a semifluid diet, and only one (3.2%) had to eat a fluid diet. Conclusions: For patients with stage I EC, additional radiotherapy following ER is safe and effective, with the swallowing function well-preserved. Nevertheless, prospective studies are needed to verify these results.

A dynamic simulation was launched to research the influence of high-pressure turbine (HPT) rotor wake passing frequency on the flow mechanism in an integrated aggressive interturbine duct (AITD). Sweeping rods were adopted to replace the HPT rotors to decouple the influence of its wake from those of other secondary flows. The diameter of the rods (d/s, nondimensionalized by the pitch (s) of the integrated struts at midspan) was 0.10, and their reduced frequency (f) ranged from 0.49 to 1.61. The k–ω SST turbulence model and γ–θ transition model were adopted for the turbulence closure. A 6.3-million-node structured grid was used to meet the grid dependency. Along with increasing f, the intensified circumferential motion of the wake (1) enhances the wake vortex stretching and exhaustion near the hub; (2) promotes the radial inclination of wakes and elongates and narrows the wake vortex band, resulting in increased spacing between the adjacent wake vortices and the weakened vortex interaction. In the high-f cases, the enhanced turbulence intensity in the interval between the adjacent wakes could suppress the separation bubble on LPT-GV in advance, but the elongated and narrowed wake vortices resulted in a substantial reduction in the radial extent and duration of their suppression on the separation bubble. Therefore, the influence of f on the integrated AITD and its parts was bidirectional, and adjusting the sweeping frequency to balance its positive and negative effects could minimize the total loss in the integrated AITD.

Background: The planetary rover is an essential platform for planetary exploration. Visual semantic segmentation is significant in the localization, perception, and path planning of the rover autonomy. Recent advances in computer vision and artificial intelligence brought about new opportunities. A systematic literature review (SLR) can help analyze existing solutions, discover available data, and identify potential gaps. Methods: A rigorous SLR has been conducted, and papers are selected from three databases (IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and Scopus) from the start of records to May 2022. The 320 candidate studies were found by searching with keywords and bool operators, and they address the semantic terrain segmentation in the navigation vision of planetary rovers. Finally, after four rounds of screening, 30 papers were included with robust inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as quality assessment. Results: 30 studies were included for the review, and sub-research areas include navigation (16 studies), geological analysis (7 studies), exploration efficiency (10 studies), and others (3 studies) (overlaps exist). Five distributions are extendedly depicted (time, study type, geographical location, publisher, and experimental setting), which analyzes the included study from the view of community interests, development status, and reimplementation ability. One key research question and six sub-research questions are discussed to evaluate the current achievements and future gaps. Conclusions: Many promising achievements in accuracy, available data, and real-time performance have been promoted by computer vision and artificial intelligence. However, a solution that satisfies pixel-level segmentation, real-time inference time, and onboard hardware does not exist, and an open, pixel-level annotated, and the real-world data-based dataset is not found. As planetary exploration projects progress worldwide, more promising studies will be proposed, and deep learning will bring more opportunities and contributions to future studies. Contributions: This SLR identifies future gaps and challenges by proposing a methodical, replicable, and transparent survey, which is the first review (also the first SLR) for semantic terrain segmentation in the navigation vision of planetary rovers.
