Abstract In this paper, formation of zinc sulfide species during roasting of ZnO with FeS2 was investigated and its contribution on flotation was illustrated. The evolution process, phase and crystal growth were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) along with thermodynamic calculation and scanning electron microscopy-Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), respectively, to interpret the formation mechanism of ZnS species. It was found that ZnS was initially generated at about 450 °C and then the reaction prevailed at about 600 °C. The generated FexS would dissolve into ZnS and then form (Zn, Fe)S compound in form of Fe2Zn3S5 when temperature increased to about 750 °C. This obviously accelerated ZnS phase formation and growth. In addition, it was known that increasing of ZnO dosage had few effects on the decomposition behavior of FeS2. Then, flotation tests of different zinc oxide materials before and after treatment were performed to further confirm that the flotation performances of the treated materials could be obviously improved. Finally, a scheme diagram was proposed to regular its application to mineral processing. It was systematically illustrated that different types of ZnS species needed to be synthetized when sulfidization roasting-flotation process was carried out to treat zinc oxide materials.

The research investigates whether the copper activation of sphalerite can result in the adsorption of xanthate on the S-site of sphalerite surface at the atomic level. The adsorption of ethyl xanthate (EX) molecule on the un-activated and Cu-activated sphalerite (1 1 0) surface in the presence of water molecule was conducted by using the density functional theory (DFT). The DFT results showed that there was little chemical interaction between EX and S atom of the un-activated sphalerite (1 1 0) surface. However, the copper activation of sphalerite changed the properties of S atom by inducing a strong covalent interaction between EX and the S atom. The EX molecule did not only adsorbed on the metal atom, but also adsorbed on the S-site. Keywords: Sphalerite, Copper activation, Xanthate adsorption, S-site

The dissolution equilibrium of galena within the entire pH range was theoretically calculated, which was based on coordination chemistry, thermodynamics and the mass balance principle of Pb2+ and S2- in pulp solution. The calculation result showed that the total lead concentration (CPbT) of galena decreased significantly with increasing pH below 7 or so; however, at pH of about 10, a reverse trend of CPbT may be observed. Within the pH range from 7 to 10, the CPbT of galena remained close and presents a minimum value of around 10-10 mol/L. This paper may provide a theoretical basis for the dissolution process of galena and its conditioning stage before benefication by adopting flotation method.

A new method for the preparation of Fe3O4 NPs from byproduct of titanium dioxide-copperas was studied in this study. Core-shell structures and chemical composition of the nanoparticles have been investigated by TEM, XRD and FTIR techniques. The results indicated that the Fe3O4 NPs can be synthesized and obtained from copperas by chemical co-precipitation method and have a uniform spherical morphology with an average diameter of about 10 nm. The mole ratio of Fe2+ to Fe3+was one of the most important factors during the chemical co-precipitation processing, which has a great effect on the yield and size distribution of precipitations. The recommended mole ratio f Fe2+ to Fe3+ was 1.75:1. The saturated magnetization of Fe3O4 NPs was 52.8emug-1 at 25°C and this material exhibited excellent magnetic properties. A new way was therefore provided for the comprehensive utilization of the unmarketable copperas. Moreover, the Fe3O4 NPs obtained from the copperas have a big potential in environmental decontamination, medical technology and biological science.

Centrifugal High Gradient Magnetic Separation (CHGMS) was creatively developed, and in the present investigation was used for the concentration of fine ilmenite from tailings through a cyclic pilot-scale CHGMS separator, to study the effect of two key parameters, i.e., magnetic induction and rotation speed of matrix, on the separation performance of the separator. The results of investigation indicates that the CHGMS is effective in concentrating the ilmenite; an increase in the rotation speed increases concentrate grade but reduces recovery of TiO2, and this is reverse for the induction. While the two parameters were optimized, a concentrate assaying 19.42% TiO2 with 80.72% recovery of TiO2 is achievable from the tailings assaying 8.18% TiO2. It was concluded that the CHGMS provides a prospective technology for the concentration of fine ilmenite.

The experimental study on removal of arsenic from sulfuric-acid residue of high-arsenic was conducted in this paper. Reduction roasting–magnetic separation and sulfuric acid leaching were discussed, and the results showed that the harmful impurity arsenic can't be effectively removed by the reduction roasting-magnetic separation process from sulfuric-acid residue. The content of arsenic would be enriched with the growth of magnetic iron grade, while the effect of the arsenic removal was obvious for sulfuric acid leaching. The leach residue, in which the content of arsenic was only 0.24% with 92.29% of arsenic leaching rate was obtained from the raw ore with 2.78% of arsenic by the sulfuric acid leaching process. And the iron grade of sulfuric-acid residue reached 61.88% while content of non-ferrous metal was very Low, which can be used as a raw material of iron-smelting. This study provided a certain amount of technical support for the similar high arsenic sulfuric-acid residue recycling.

Flotation characteristics of the fine-disseminated copper-nickel sulfides containing Pt and Pd and thermodynamic properties of high amounts of serpentine gangues by diluted acidic leaching in the ore sample of Yunnan were investigated by bench flotation tests and acidic leaching tests and their combination tests have also been conducted to exploit the harmonious design to extract all the values from the ore sample. Based on the results of bench flotation tests, it has been suggested that traditional flotation with the target of only metallic values in the ore was not available and profitable due to the fact that it was inevitable of the deteriorated dilution of serpentines in the flotation concentration using common various kinds of flocculants or depressants, in which the content of MgO in the concentrate was around 20.0%, while leaching tests by waste acids from producing TiO2 indicated that this may be a promising method to extract MgO andα-Fe2O3 from the ore sample, since it can weaken the disturbance of serpentines significantly and lead a satisfied results of the Cu-Ni sulfide flotation. In this study, a harmonious flow-sheet, which involves leaching by waste acids and traditional flotation process, had been designed with the objective of extracting the metallic values and two non-metallic products, which includesα-Fe2O3 and MgO, from the ore sample. It is worthy noticed that the acidic waste liquids from a TiO2 company in Panzihua was used as leaching agent, which can dissolve 98.81% Mg2+ and 78.43% Fen+ with little Ni2+ and Cu2+. By the comparison of the flotation results and benefits between traditional flotation alone and harmonious design, besides the two more qualified non-metallic products, α-Fe2O3 and MgO, a better concentrate containing a grade of only 2.64% MgO at the grades of 2.58% Cu, 2.97% Ni and 81.02 g/t Pt+Pd with the recoveries of 93.79% Cu, 83.14% Ni and 79.19% Pt+Pd respectively, were harvested from the harmonious design.
