Background: To evaluate variations in fibrin network patterns of the platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in different age groups. Materials and Methods: Ninety-five patients were divided into three age groups: Group 1: (20–39 years); Group 2: (40–59 years); and Group 3: (60 years and above). PRF was prepared from blood samples of all patients and were subjected to cell block cytology method of histological analysis and slides were prepared to histologically assess the age-related changes in (i) fibrin network patterns in terms of density and (ii) entrapment of platelets and white blood cells (WBCs) within fibrin meshwork. Results: Two types of fibrin network pattern arrangements noticed: Dense and loose types in three age groups. However, there was a noticeable decrease in the dense type of fibrin network with progressing age and increase in the loose type of fibrin arrangement. Furthermore, variation in a number of platelets and WBCs entrapped within fibrin network in relation to age was noticed. Conclusion: From the current study it can be concluded that age can be considered as one of the influencing factors on quality of PRF in terms of fibrin network patterns and hence, platelet and WBCs entrapment within these fibrin networks.

Context: This study was conducted to compare autologous platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) with PerioGlas® in treating periodontal intrabony defects (IBDs) of variable number of walls, based on clinical and radiographic outcomes. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess which regenerative material, i.e., autologous PRF or PerioGlas®, has a broader range of applicability in treating periodontal IBDs. Settings and Design: This study is a randomized controlled trial conducted at the Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology of the Oxford Dental College and Hospital, Bangalore, India. Methods: Sixty IBDs were provided nonsurgical periodontal treatment, i.e., scaling and root planing, followed by oral hygiene instructions. When performing periodontal surgery, the IBDs were assigned to the Control group (i.e., access flap alone), test Group I (i.e., access flap + (PerioGlas®), and test Group II (i.e., access flap + autologous PRF). The vertical bone defects in three groups consisted of 3-, 2-, and 1-wall intrabony periodontal defects. Radiographic assessments were performed at baseline and 6 and 9 months. Statistical Analysis Used: Statistical analysis was based on the mean values, standard deviation, and P values. Results: Mean defect depth fill compared to baseline and 9 months postoperatively for: (1) 3-wall IBDs: Control group was 6.50 ± 1.56 mm, test Group I was 9.27 ± 1.62 mm, and test Group II was 10.45 ± 2.33 mm, (2) 2-wall IBDs: Control group was 6.08 ± 0.62 mm, test Group I was 8.21 ± 1.58 mm, and test Group II was 8.96 ± 1.85 mm, and (3) 1-wall IBDs: Control group was 5.78 ± 1.07 mm and test Group II was 8.00 ± 0.69 mm. Conclusion: Autologous PRF has a wider applicability in case of various types of IBDs as compared to PerioGlas ® owing to its mechanism of action and composition which is the presence of various growth factors and cytokines.

Aim The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of open flap debridement (OFD) alone and OFD with either autologous platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) or titanium PRF (TPRF) in the treatment of intrabony defects (IBD). Methods The study was conducted on patients reporting to the Department of Periodontics, The Oxford Dental College and Hospital, Bangalore, India. Thirty-eight patients with 90 periodontal IBD of moderate–severe periodontitis were selected and assigned to the OFD alone group (group I), the OFD with autologous PRF group (group II), or the OFD with TPRF group (group III). In each patient, a minimum number of two sextants were present, with probing pocket depths (PPD) ≥5 mm in at least three teeth. Results At 9 months’ postoperatively, upon comparing the PPD reduction, defect depth reduction, and clinical attachment level gains, it was noted that groups II and III showed statistically-significant improvements compared with group I, but no statistically-significant difference was noted between groups II and III. Conclusion The present study demonstrated that marked improvements in the clinical parameters and radiographic outcomes were noted with both autologous PRF and TPRF in the treatment of IBD.

Background: To compare treatment modalities: Open flap debridement (OFD) alone (Group I), OFD in combination with PerioGlas® (Group II), and OFD in combination with autologous platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) (Group III) for periodontal intrabony defects (IBDs). Aim: To evaluate on clinical and radiographic basis, effectiveness of PerioGlas®, and PRF in treating IBDs. Settings and Design: IBDs selected on the basis of the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to Groups I, II, and III by coin toss method. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on patients reporting to the department of periodontology and oral implantology. Thirty-eight patients with ninety periodontal IBDs of moderate to severe periodontitis were selected and assigned to Groups I, II, and III. In each patient, a minimum number of two sextants were present with pocket depths ≥5 mm in at least three teeth. Statistical Analysis: Statistical analysis based on mean values, standard deviation, and P values. Results: Compared to baseline, 9 months postoperatively: (1) mean probing pocket depth reduction for Group I was 3.68 mm ± 0.72, for Group II was 5.57 mm ± 1.10, and for Group III was 6.11 mm ± 0.92. (2) The mean relative attachment level gain for Group I was 4.14 mm ± 0.76, for Group II was 6.57 mm ± 1.45, and for Group III was 6.74 mm ± 1.55. (3) Mean radiographic IBD fill for Group I was 69.29% mm ± 7.73, for Group II was 74.44% mm ± 8.57, and for Group III was 75.01% mm ± 7.85. Conclusion: This study shows marked improvements in the clinical parameters and radiographic outcomes with both PerioGlas® and autologous PRF to treat periodontal IBDs as compared to OFD alone.
