The Zr3d spectrum in the XPS measurement of PZT ceramics was found to vary according to their crystalline phases. The Zr3d spectrum of the rhombohedral phase was deconvoluted to the Zr3d5/2 profile at 181.3±0.2eV (denoted as A1) and the Zr3d3/2 profile at 183.6±0.2eV (A2), corresponding to a single chemical state. In contrast, those of both the tetragonal phase and the MPB were deconvoluted to four profiles, Zr3d5/2 at 182.1±0.2eV (B1) and Zr3d3/2 at 184.5±0.2eV (B2) in addition to A1 and A2, corresponding to double chemical states. The area ratios of (B1+B2)/ (A1+A2) for the tetragonal phase and the MPB were 0.6 and 0.3, respectively. These results indicate that XPS has potential for a novel analytical application to PZT ceramics.

The surface of polycrystalline alumina fibers was modified through the hydrolysis of Al-tributoxide (TBOA) or Si-tetraethoxide (TEOS). The former gave the partial deposition of granular materials, and the latter the entire coating of a thin film. Both of them could reduce the deterioration of the appearance of the fiber after being heated at 1400°C, while the geometrical patterns on the original fiber cropped up at that temperature. Particularly, the thin film on the TEOS-treated fiber which was thermally stable suppressed the outward diffusion of the inner amorphous Al species to hold the smoothness of the surface up to 1400°C. The thickness of the film was estimated to be 3nm after being dried at 90°C. This thermal stability decreased at 1500°C; that is, the patterns on the surface of the fiber cropped up.

We have developed a method to quantitate hepatitis C virus (HCV)-RNA from serum by using ‘multicylic’ RT-PCR. This method requires 100 μl of sera and synthetic HCV-RNA with a known copy number to be used as a standard. HCV RNA in serum are amplified by the RT-PCR technique and quantitated by comparing the darkness of the spot on the film with the standards after dot blot hybridization. Accuracy of this technique was comparable to the competitive RT PCR method (CRT-PCR) when compared using the same sample. Also, this technique uses one-tenth of the sample volume required in CRT-PCR with the additional advantages of low cost, faster assay time, and ability to run a larger number of samples. We analyzed the amount of HCV-RNA in 71 patients with chronic liver disease due to HCV subclassified into chronic inactive hepatitis (CIH), chronic active hepatitis (CAH), liver cirrhosis (LC), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Seventy-five percent of the patients contained 106 to 108 copies/ml of HCV-RNA. The number of samples which contained over 106 copies/ml in the four groups were CIH,5/8 (62.5%); CAH,15/20 (75.0%); LC,25/27 (92.6%); and HCC,14/16 (87.5%).

Physiological saline solutions, each adjusted to pH 1.0, pH 2.0 and pH 7.2, and added urea and urease inhibitor (Acetohydroxamic acid), were inoculated with a culture solution of Helicobacter pylori NCTC11637 strain derived from man, and allowed to react for 10, 30, 60 and 120 minutes. After five days of incubation on a blood agar medium, remaining viable H. pylori was counted. Survival of H. pylori was inadequate under the conditions of pH 1.0 and pH 2.0, but survival up to 120 min was observed on addition of urea. Further, on addition of urease inhibitor the survival time was reduced. H. pylori survived under the condition of pH 7.2 independent of addition of urea and urease inhibitor. Urea is essential for survival of H. pylori under strongly acidic conditions, and utility of urease inhibitor was observed for inhibition of survival of H. pylori.

A high-power argon excimer laser has been developed with an output power exceeding 2 MW in the VUV region at 126 nm. As an alternative to a conventional Al/MgF(2)-coated mirror, which was susceptible to damage, an uncoated quartz plate was successfully used as a reflector for reproducible high-power operation of the argon excimer laser without any mirror damage. Observation of the temporal behavior of the laser pulse in relation to that of the gain coefficient is discussed.

A Slip mixture containing an oxide ceramic powder was coated on the copper electrodes as a dielectric layer for ozonizing discharge by a processing technique for vitreous enamel, and a prototype ozonizer was constructed with these electrodes. Pb (Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3, BaZrO3, PbTiO3, and BaTiO3, were examined as an oxide. It was found that both generated ozone gas concentration and ozonizing efficiency increased with increasing dielectric constant of dielectric layer. In particular, an ozonizer with a dielectric layer of 30wt% BaTiO3 worked well, that is, ozone concentration in ozonized air was 170ppm and calculated ozonizing efficiency was 13gO3/kWh under the conditions of driving voltage=5kV, A. C. frequency=5kHz, and air flow rate=501/min. As a result of continuous running test, the gas concentration of ozone generated was 160±10ppm and the temperature of electrodes was 42±5°C, and they remained stabaly for more than 2 weeks.

The purpose of this study was to assess changes in the degree of fatty acid unsaturation in rat liver after partial hepatectomy. This is the first study in which liver fatty acid unsaturation has been analyzed over a long period of regeneration until day 28 after operation. The relationship between changes in unsaturation and fatty acid composition in the regenerating liver were also investigated in this study. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed significantly elevated levels of unsaturation with a maximum on day 5 after partial hepatectomy, compared with untreated controls (11.72+/-0.55 vs. 11.05+/-0.26%, P < 0.05). No significant changes in unsaturation were found in day 1 regenerating liver, which is rich in absolute amounts of fatty acids. Based on gas-liquid chromatography, the relative amounts of oleic acid (18:1n-9) and linoleic acid (LA; 18:2n-6) were increased, while polyunsaturated fatty acids such as arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) were decreased on day 1. On the other hand, on day 5 of regeneration, while most fatty acids were returning to their preoperative control levels, only DHA was higher than the control value (7.69+/-0.58 vs. 5.57+/-0.37%, P < 0.001). The high levels of unsaturation on day 5 were found to be partly due to the increase in DHA. The findings suggest that some significant signals are transmitted during the regeneration process owing to alterations in the membrane structure by the high levels of fatty acid unsaturation and the increase in DHA levels on day 5 after partial hepatectomy.

Summary The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) infection and gastric carcinoma. 94 patients with gastric carcinoma and 111 patients with chronic gastritis were involved in this study. They were classified into 3 age groups: Group A (40 years and under), Group B (41–59), Group C (60 years and over). Serum samples were tested for H. pylori IgG antibodies by ELISA and for pepsinogen (PG) by RIA. The ratio of PG I/PG II was used as a marker for atrophic gastritis. Results were as follows. In the incidence of H. pylori antibodies, there was no significant differences between gastric carcinoma and chronic gastritis in any of the groups. In the quantity of H. pylori antibodies, there was no significant difference between gastric carcinoma and chronic gastritis in any of the groups. The ratio of PG I/PG II was significantly decreased in H. pylori positive cases when compared to H. pylori negative cases in each group with chronic gastritis and group A and B with gastric carcinoma. The ratio of PG I/PG II in gastric carcinoma was significantly lower than that of chronic gastritis. As conclusion, from the point of view of the prevalence of H. pylori , it.is suggested that H. pylori is not a direct causal agent in the pathogenesis of gastric carcinoma.

Summary The aim of this study was to clarify the change of the gastric mucosa following inoculation with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Two pairs of cynomolgus monkeys received either H. pylori of human origin (group A) or H. pylori of monkey origin (group B) by intragastric inculation at a dose of 109 CFU. After inoculation, endoscopical observation and biopsies were done every 7 days for one month. The bacteria in the biopsy samples were cultured quantitatively. The content of intracellular PAS-AB positive substance was quantitatively analyzed with the image analyzing system. Results were as follows: 1) Before inoculation, the gastric mucosa was endoscopically normal and free from H. pylori. 2) The quantity of H. pylori varied from 0 to 103 CFU/ 0.1 g tissue in group A and from 10 to 106 CFU/ 0.1 g tissue in group B. 3) Severe erosion was seen in group B, while mild mucosal erythema and erosion were observed in group A. 4) There was a correlation between the quantity of H. pylori and histological activity (Rauws' gastritis score). 5) The PAS-AB positive substance in H. pylori-positive mucosa was less than that in H. pylori-negative mucosa. In conclusion, gastric mucosal changes of varying degrees were brought about after inoculation of H. pylori depending on the quantity of bacilli in the gastric tissue.

The microstructure of the system Pb(Zr, Ti)O3–Pb(Mn1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramics prepared by the hot isostatic pressing (HIP) method was investigated in terms of chemical bonding, etching behavior, and morphology for the elucidation of its pyroelectric characteristics. As a result, the concept model proposed previously (Sugiyama et al..: J. Ceram. Soc. Jpn., 1996), in which the pyroelectric characteristics were composed of the overall integration of those of the two starting materials and their serial solid solutions, was partly supported.

Domain structures are examined on ribbon-shaped (111) platelets of NiO crystals containing thin lamellae twinned on the (111) plane with respect to each other. Together with configurations of T-domains realized across the twin planes detailed configurations of T-walls are determined by optical and X-ray observations. Characteristics of observed T-domain structures can be reasonably interpreted by considering the elastic interaction between T-walls and twin planes through the rhombohedral striction as well as the anisotropic shape of specimen.

A 1M word/spl times/1-bit/256K word/spl times/4-bit CMOS DRAM with a test mode is described. The use of an improved sense amplifier for the half-V/SUB CC/ sensing scheme and a novel half-V/SUB CC/ voltage generator have yielded a 56-ns row access time and a 50-/spl mu/A standby current at typical conditions. High /spl alpha/-particle immunity has been achieved by optimizing the impurity profile under the bit line, based on a triple-layer polysilicon n-well CMOS technology. The RAM, measuring 4.4/spl times/12.32 mm/SUP 2/, is fit to standard 300-mil plastic packages.

A 256K-word /spl times/ 1-bit NMOS dynamic RAM using 2-/spl mu/m design rules and MoSi/SUB 2/ gate technology is described. A marked low-power dissipation of 170 mW (5 V V/SUB cc/, 260-ns cycle time) has been achieved by using a partial activation scheme. Optimized circuits exhibit a typical CAS access time of 34 ns. For the purpose of optimizing circuit parameters, an electron beam tester was successfully applied to observe the internal timing of real chips. Laser repairable redundancy with four spare rows and four spare columns is implemented for yield improvement.

A cavity perturbation method is described that permits one to determine the microwave conductivity of semiconductors without any direct measurement of the Q-factor and the evaluation of the geometrical constant of the cavity so far considered indispensable. The measurable range of the conductivity is restricted by certain experimental factors and discussed in detail. It is shown, for the case of a conventional TE102 rectangular cavity with Q~2000 resonating at 14 GHz, that resistivities in the range of 5×10-4 to 6×10-3 ohm m can be best determined by this method.

Excitation mechanisms of Ar–Kr ion lasers have been investigated by observing time sequences of spontaneous emissions from upper laser levels in the pulsed discharge mode. The experimental results show that a dominant excitation mechanism of Ar gas in Ar–Kr mixtures changes, with increasing Kr content, from direct electron collisions into excitation transfer collisions between Kr ion and Ar atom. The excitation mechanism of Kr gas is predominantly due to a direct electron excitation and no appreciable change with the gas composition is found.

Ferromagnetic resonance measurements were performed on NiFe 2 O 4 precipitates formed in single crystals of NiO containing Fe ions. It is concluded that the rhombohedral deformation of NiO below its Neel temperature is propagated into the NiFe 2 O 4 precipitates and thus a uniaxial anisotropy is induced magnetomechanically in the precipitates besides the well-known cubic anisotropy. Furthermore, it is indicated that exchange interaction of spins across the interface between NiFe 2 O 4 precipitates and the NiO matrix is also important at the early stage of the precipitation.
