Abstract

A geometry‐constraint‐based nonordinary state‐based peridynamic (GC‐NOSBPD) model is developed to investigate the fracture characteristics of flawed brittle disc specimens under compressive loading as well as its fracturing mechanism. The bond‐associated horizon (BAH) size is directly defined based on the kinematic constraint (KC). This proposed model can well mitigate the numerical oscillation. The failure criteria based on the bond‐associated stress state are utilized to simulate the fracture of materials. Two stress effects can offer an insight into the fracturing mechanism of flawed specimens. The failure modes of flawed specimens are controlled by the tensile failure, and the crack growth trajectories acquired by the present numerical model are equivalent to those obtained by the experimental observations. The effects of size and crack inclination angles on the fracture toughness of brittle materials are assessed. The GC‐NOSBPD model is competent for evaluating the fracture damage of flawed brittle materials and understanding its failure mechanism. Abstract

In this paper, a novel coupled elastoplastic damage model for coal-rock is proposed to predict the deformation and potential disaster in coal mining. The conditions of small deformation and thermodynamic potential are considered, as well as the coupling of damage evolution process with the plastic deformation and the plastic hardening of coal-rock. Based on the theory of damage mechanics, the formulas of damage evolution, plastic yield and plastic potential of coal-rock are deduced theoretically. In addition, triaxial compression tests of coal-rock under the different confining stresses are conducted to reveal the law of deviatoric stress and strain. Based on the experimental data, the control parameters of the coupled elastoplastic damage model of coal-rock are determined. The theoretical results obtained from the coupled elastoplastic damage model for coal-rock agree well with those from the experiment. The proposed model is reasonable to predict the deformation of coal-rock.

Abstract

Brittle rock contains an important plastic deformation, which causes microcracks when coupled with stress-induced damage. A new coupled elastoplastic damage model is established in order to discuss the damage behaviors found in brittle rock, based on theoretical analysis and experiments. Micromechanic considerations determine the effective elastic properties of anisotropic damaged geomaterials. An energy-based damage criterion is used to deduce the damage initiation and the damage evolution law of the brittle rocks. Moreover, the non-linear unified strength criterion is modified. It takes anisotropic damage and the effects of intermediate principal stress into account, in order to determine both the yield and plastic potential functions. The non-associated plastic flow rule is utilized. The consistency condition of plastic and damage is applied in the coupled process. The damage evolution rule and the coupled plastic damage of brittle rock are conceived within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. By comparing the simulations and the experimental data from limestone that was subjected to various loading paths, a strong connection between the numerical simulations and experimental data is therefore obtained. The numerical results show that the new model is able to describe the main features of the mechanical properties observed in brittle rock.

Abstract

A novel coupled thermo‐mechanical nonordinary state‐based peridynamics is proposed to study thermally induced damage in rocks. The thermal expansion characteristics of solid material are introduced into the coupled thermomechanical model to consider the influence of temperature. The deformation gradient tensor is obtained by the temperature fields, which is solved by peridynamic heat conduction theory. By introducing the deformation gradient tensor into the force state function of the nonordinary state‐based peridynamics, the coupling of thermal and mechanical is realized. A failure criterion is developed to investigate the thermally induced cracking of rocks. Then, the validity of the coupled thermo‐mechanical model is demonstrated by a numerical simulation. The correctness of the coupled model is validated by a benchmark example with analytic solution. Moreover, the thermal cracking progress in rocks is simulated using the proposed coupled nonordinary state‐based peridynamic model, and it is found that the numerical results are in good agreement with the previous experimental observations.
