The orbifold group of the Borromean rings with singular angle 90 degrees, $U$, is a universal group, because every closed oriented 3--manifold $M^{3}$ occurs as a quotient space $M^{3} = H^{3}/G$, where $G$ is a finite index subgroup of $U$. Therefore, an interesting, but quite difficult problem, is to classify the finite index subgroups of the universal group $U$. One of the purposes of this paper is to begin this classification. Abstract

One method for obtaining every closed orientable 3-manifold is as branched covering of the 3-sphere over a link. There is a classical topological result showing that the minimun possible number of sheets in the covering is three. In this paper we obtain a geometric version of this result. We define a class of groups based on parallel computations by pushdown automata. This class generalizes automatic groups. It includes the fundamental groups of all 3-manifolds which obey Thurston' s geometrization conjecture. Abstract

We study SDE and PDE models for opinion dynamics under bounded confidence, for a range of different boundary conditions, with and without the inclusion of a radical population. We perform exhaustive numerical studies with pseudo-spectral methods to determine the effects of the boundary conditions, suggesting that the no-flux case most faithfully reproduces the underlying mechanisms in the associated deterministic models of Hegselmann and Krause. We also compare the SDE and PDE models, and use tools from analysis to study phase transitions, including a systematic description of an appropriate order parameter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The understanding of cardiovascular effects of spaceflight has evolved throughout the course of the American manned spaceflight program. Originally descriptive in nature, the present understanding is based on empiric measurements of vascular volume, cardiac output, vascular reflexes, and peripheral and central autonomic control. More detailed understanding of cardiovascular effects has allowed us to separate those symptoms from symptoms caused by musculoskeletal or neurovestibular abnormalities.

Abstract

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R\&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

The Security for Collaborating Infrastructures working group (SCIv2-WG)is a collaborative activity within the Wise Information Security for e-Infrastructures(WISE) trust community. SCIv2-WG members include information security officersfrom several large-scale distributed Research Infrastructures and e-Infrastructures.The aims of the trust framework defined in this document are to enableinteroperation of collaborating Infrastructures and to manage cross-Infrastructureoperational security risks. It also aims to build trust between Infrastructures bydefining standards for collaboration, especially in cases where specific internalsecurity policy documents cannot be shared.

Abstract

During the 1990s the introduction of new technology, and in particular of low cost delivery channels, has accelerated the pace of innovation taking place within the UK financial services industry and has created a need for a more strategic approach to the study of innovation within this industry. In this paper, the case study of telephone banking is used to describe the main aspects of' strategies adopted by the first and second movers, when implementing this delivery channel. It shows that the successful innovator -- First Direct -- adopted the logic of 'value-innovation', whilst the second movers have followed the 'conventional' logic. In contrast with previous studies, the strategic approach applied in this case study also reveals that differentiation in the financial market place is not achieved with the implementation of distribution channels or just technology, but bringing to the market 'unprecedented value'. Finally, the implications for the general theory of innovation in relation to financial services organisations are highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Engagement with professional practice learning introduced through simulation, which includes peer and formative assessment and builds towards summative assessment in clinical practice, is central to the undergraduate nursing curriculum at UWE and at many higher education institutions across the world. This approach enriches the student experience and, as health care and the patient population continue to change and evolve, enables students to develop an adaptive and critical understanding of nursing (Berragan, 2014). These features are not just additional ways of learning nursing and developing fundamental nursing skills; they are ways of knowing nursing (Berragan, 1998). There is real potential for assessment through simulation to help students to understand the key features of nursing and learn to deliver skilled, integrated and compassionate care to their patients. This presentation focuses upon the opportunities provided through simulation to enhance learning through assessment. Simulation supports opportunities for authentic assessment of the fundamental skills of nursing (Wiggins, 1989; Walters, 2014). The notion that assessment tasks should acknowledge and engage with the ways in which knowledge and skills are used in authentic settings is important (Boud, 2007). Assessment has a major influence upon learning, directing attention to areas of significance, acting as an incentive for learning and having a powerful effect upon students’ approaches to their learning (Boud and Falchikov, 2007). Assessment also guides students, emphasizing what they can and cannot succeed in doing (Boud, 2007). It is this aspect of simulation that we wish to highlight. Our current research explores undergraduate nursing students’ simulation experiences, and their descriptions of simulation during feedback, debriefing and formative assessment. It also highlights the benefits of peer assessment within the simulation learning environment as nursing students work together to demonstrate, describe and reflect upon their learning.
