4. Performance analysis of ARIMA Model for wind speed forecasting in Jerusalem, Palestine.

Abstract

Palestine lacks sufficient conventional energy sources that meet the daily needs of the Palestinian people, and consequently, it heavily relies on neighboring countries for its supply with energy compensations. Wind energy is recognized as an abundant, effective, and eco-friendly power source, but it poses several challenges in harnessing due to the inherent variability of wind characteristics. The main objective of this research study is to delve into the wind energy landscape in Palestine, and to offer some insights into the feasibility of wind speed forecasting for implementing sustainable energy solutions, with a special focus on ARIMA; a widely used statistical method for time series forecasting. It specifically explores the potential of using ARIMA models to forecast wind speed using a data captured from a meteorological station located in east Jerusalem, Palestine for a duration of 2 years—January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022. To find the optimal values of ARIMA parameters (p, d, q) for the considered study site, a set of experiments were conducted and the model's forecasting accuracy was evaluated using three metrics: RMSE, MAE, and the coefficient of determination (R2). The results have shown that ARIMA (21,2) emerges as the most accurate structure with an input period that demonstrates superior estimation with minimal RMSE (1.74), minimal MAE (1.58) and higher R2 (0.76) values. This means that the optimal estimation is achieved when an autoregressive process is based on the previous two lagged observations and the moving average process incorporates the dependency between the observation and the residual error from a second-order moving average applied to the lagged observations. These findings give valuable insights into the feasibility and precision of wind speed forecasting models for sustainable energy solutions, and emphasize the potential for harnessing wind energy in the region as clarified by ARIMA forecasting accuracy. 14. Structure and Ecosystem Services of Three Common Urban Tree Species in an Arid Climate City.

Abstract

Urban forests play a critical role in improving the quality of life in cities, but in arid environments, little is known about the potential benefits and growth conditions of different tree species. Our study aimed to fill this gap by investigating the relationships between tree dimensions, above-ground biomass carbon storage, and shading potential in three common urban trees in the arid city of Jericho, Palestine, (i.e., Ficus nitida, Delonix regia, and Phoenix dactylifera). The trees were chosen according to their distribution in urban locations and tree vitality, with ages ranging from 20 to 90 years. Based on the results from tree structure measurements, the carbon storage and shading potential were calculated using the City Tree model. The results indicate a moderate to strong relationship between tree height, crown diameter, and crown volume for F. nitida and D. regia (R2 = 0.28–0.66), but no relationship for P. dactylifera (R2 = 0.03–0.06). The findings suggest that the analyzed tree species can considerably contribute to the potential benefits of trees in improving the climate of an arid city: D. regia shows a higher median of above-ground biomass carbon storage of 155 kg C tree−1, while P. dactylifera 91 kg C and F. nitida 76 Kg C. D. regia and F. nitida have a higher median of shading potential, (31 m2–41 m2), respectively. Information on the ecosystem services from urban trees and their relationships in terms of species, age, and tree planting urban location are very important for city planners, in relation to sustainable urban green spaces in arid cities. Abstract

This study aims to assess the perceptions about renewable energy among The Palestinian youth. The study aimed to find out the impact of gender, specialization, accommodation, and level of learning among these students on their perceptions of renewable energy. Data was collected a total population of 371; (140) male and (231) female youth students from Al-Quds University. The Perceptions about Renewable Energy Questionnaire (PREQ) was used in this study; this questionnaire has six scales containing 35 items. In this study, PREQ was supported by the validity of factors, and alpha Cronbach reliability of the tool was found to be (0.90). The study revealed that the average elements in PREQ were (3.41) and is relatively high based on a five-point Scale of the Likert type. The result of the current study showed that there was a statistically significant difference in accommodation in students' responses to PREQ, as village students' perceptions of PREQ were more positive than their city and camp counterparts. The results also showed statistically significant differences in PREQ due to the academic level variable in favor of new students. Abstract

Through litter decomposition enormous amounts of carbon is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous large-scale decomposition experiments have been conducted focusing on this fundamental soil process in order to understand the controls on the terrestrial carbon transfer to the atmosphere. However, previous studies were mostly based on site-specific litter and methodologies, adding major uncertainty to syntheses, comparisons and meta-analyses across different experiments and sites. In the TeaComposition initiative, the potential litter decomposition is investigated by using standardized substrates (Rooibos and Green tea) for comparison of litter mass loss at 336 sites (ranging from −9 to +26 °C MAT and from 60 to 3113 mm MAP) across different ecosystems. In this study we tested the effect of climate (temperature and moisture), litter type and land-use on early stage decomposition (3 months) across nine biomes. We show that litter quality was the predominant controlling factor in early stage litter decomposition, which explained about 65% of the variability in litter decomposition at a global scale. The effect of climate, on the other hand, was not litter specific and explained <0.5% of the variation for Green tea and 5% for Rooibos tea, and was of significance only under unfavorable decomposition conditions (i.e. xeric versus mesic environments). When the data were aggregated at the biome scale, climate played a significant role on decomposition of both litter types (explaining 64% of the variation for Green tea and 72% for Rooibos tea). No significant effect of land-use on early stage litter decomposition was noted within the temperate biome. Our results indicate that multiple drivers are affecting early stage litter mass loss with litter quality being dominant. In order to be able to quantify the relative importance of the different drivers over time, long-term studies combined with experimental trials are needed.

Abstract

This study examines the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) semiconductor supported on borosilicate tubes (cut-off 290 nm) towards removal of a mix of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from water. For this purpose, two widely used analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ibuprofen (IBU) and mefenamic acid, along with MCPA sodium monohydrate, which is a common herbicide frequently used in the agricultural activities, were selected as a case study. Borosilicate tubes were coated with titanium oxide through two different approaches: sol-gel dip-coating and a hybrid nanoparticle dip-coating and plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) process. The photochemical reactor that hosts the titania-coated tubes was designed to permit continuous throughput of liquid feed stream. The photodegradation experiments were performed in laboratory conditions under artificial irradiation simulating solar light. The efficiency of direct photolysis and heterogeneous photocatalysis (TiO2) was investigated, and the performance of each coating method was evaluated. Kinetic studies for each experiment were accomplished, the overall results showed poor efficiency and insufficient removal for NSAIDs through direct photolysis, whereas applying heterogeneous photacatalysis with TiO2 coated on borosilicate tubes was found to accelerate their degradation rate with complete decomposition. Concomitantly, kinetic experimental results showed a critical difference of performance for the two coating methods used; in particular, the degradation rates of pollutants by the sol-gel-coated tubes were much faster than the degradation by the nanoparticle/PECVD-coated tubes. Using TiO2 supported on borosilicate tubes appears to be a promising alternative to conventional TiO2 suspension and avoid post-separation stages. The results achieved in this study can be used to optimise large-scale applications, and expanding the study to cover a wide range of pollutants will lead to achieve more representative results.
