Post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) are transition galaxies showing evidence of recent rapid star formation quenching. To understand the role of galaxy mergers in triggering quenching, we investigate the incidence of PSBs and resolved PSB properties in post-merger galaxies using both SDSS single-fiber spectra and MaNGA resolved IFU spectra. We find post-mergers have a PSB excess of 10 - 20 times that relative to their control galaxies using single-fiber PSB diagnostics. A similar excess of ~ 19 times is also found in the fraction of central (C)PSBs and ring-like (R)PSBs in post-mergers using the resolved PSB diagnostic. However, 60% of the CPSBs + RPSBs in both post-mergers and control galaxies are missed by the single-fiber data. By visually inspecting the resolved PSB distribution, we find that the fraction of outside-in quenching is 7 times higher than inside-out quenching in PSBs in post-mergers while PSBs in control galaxies do not show large differences in these quenching directions. In addition, we find a marginal deficit of HI gas in PSBs relative to non-PSBs in post-mergers using the MaNGA-HI data. The excesses of PSBs in post-mergers suggest that mergers play an important role in triggering quenching. Resolved IFU spectra are important to recover the PSBs missed by single-fiber spectra. The excess of outside-in quenching relative to inside-out quenching in post-mergers suggests that AGN are not the dominant quenching mechanism in these galaxies, but that processes from the disk (gas inflows/consumption and stellar feedback) play a more important role., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS on May 12 2023, 19 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables

Local low metallicity dwarf galaxies are relics of the early universe and hold clues into the origins of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). In recent work, coronal lines have been used to unveil a population of candidate accreting black holes in dwarf galaxies with gas phase metallicities and stellar masses well below the host galaxies of any previously known AGNs. Using MUSE/VLT observations, we report the detection of [Fe X] $\lambda$6374 coronal line emission and a broad H$\alpha$ line in the nucleus of SDSS J094401.87$-$003832.1, a nearby ($z=0.0049$) metal poor dwarf galaxy almost 500 times less massive than the LMC. The [Fe X] $\lambda$6374 emission is compact and centered on the brightest nuclear source, with a spatial extent of $\approx$100 pc. The [Fe X] luminosity is $\approx 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$, within the range seen in previously identified AGNs in the dwarf galaxy population. This line has never been observed in gas ionized by hot stars. While it can be produced in supernova ejecta, the [Fe X] flux from SDSS J094401.87$-$003832.1 has persisted over the ~19 year time period between the SDSS and MUSE observations, ruling out supernovae as the origin for the emission. The black hole mass measured from the broad H$\alpha$ FWHM and luminosity is $\approx 3150$ M$_\odot$, in line with its stellar mass if virial mass relations and black hole-galaxy scaling relations apply in this mass regime. These observations, together with previously reported multi-wavelength observations, can most plausibly be explained by the presence of an accreting intermediate mass black hole in a primordial galaxy analog. Galaxy mergers are predicted to trigger accretion on to the central supermassive black holes, with the highest rates occurring during final coalescence. Previously, we have shown elevated rates of both optical and mid-IR selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in post-mergers, but to date the prevalence of X-ray AGNs has not been examined in the same systematic way. We present XMM–Newton data of 43 post-merger galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey along with 430 non-interacting control galaxies matched in stellar mass, redshift, and environment in order to test for an excess of hard X-ray (2–10 keV) emission in post-mergers attributable to triggered AGNs. We find two X-ray detections in the post-mergers ($4.7^{+9.3}_{-3.8}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) and nine in the controls ($2.1^{+1.5}_{-1.0}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$), an excess of $2.22^{+4.44}_{-2.22}$, where the confidence intervals are 90 per cent. While, we therefore do not find statistically significant evidence for an X-ray AGN excess in post-mergers (p = 0.26), we find a factor of ∼17 excess of mid-IR AGNs in our sample, consistent with the past work and inconsistent with the observed X-ray excess (p = 2.7 × 10−4). Dominant, luminous AGNs are therefore more frequent in post-mergers, and the lack of a comparable excess of 2–10 keV X-ray AGNs suggests that AGNs in post-mergers are more likely to be heavily obscured. Our results are consistent with the post-merger stage being characterized by enhanced AGN fueling, heavy AGN obscuration, and more intrinsically luminous AGN, in line with theoretical predictions.

Powerful outflows are thought to play a critical role in galaxy evolution and black hole growth. We present the first large-scale systematic study of ionised outflows in paired galaxies and post-mergers compared to a robust control sample of isolated galaxies. We isolate the impact of the merger environment to determine if outflow properties depend on merger stage. Our sample contains $\sim$4,000 paired galaxies and $\sim$250 post-mergers in the local universe ($0.02 \leq z \leq 0.2$) from the SDSS DR 7 matched in stellar mass, redshift, local density of galaxies, and [OIII] $\lambda$5007 luminosity to a control sample of isolated galaxies. By fitting the [OIII] $\lambda$5007 line, we find ionised outflows in $\sim$15 per cent of our entire sample. Outflows are much rarer in star-forming galaxies compared to AGN, and outflow incidence and velocity increase with [OIII] $\lambda$5007 luminosity. Outflow incidence is significantly elevated in the optical+mid-infrared selected AGN compared to purely optical AGN; over 60 per cent show outflows at the highest luminosities ($L_{\mathrm{[OIII] \lambda5007}}$ $\gtrsim$ 10$^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$), suggesting mid-infrared AGN selection favours galaxies with powerful outflows, at least for higher [OIII] $\lambda$5007 luminosities. However, we find no statistically significant difference in outflow incidence, velocity, and luminosity in mergers compared to isolated galaxies, and there is no dependence on merger stage. Therefore, while interactions are predicted to drive gas inflows and subsequently trigger nuclear star formation and accretion activity, when the power source of the outflow is controlled for, the merging environment has no further impact on the large-scale ionised outflows as traced by [OIII] $\lambda5007$., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, to be published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We conduct the first systematic survey of a comprehensive set of the twenty optical coronal lines in the spectra of nearly 1 million galaxies observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8 catalog. This includes often overlooked high ionization-potential (IP) lines such as [Ar X] $\lambda$5533, [S XII] $\lambda$7609, [Fe XI] $\lambda$7892, and [Fe XIV] $\lambda$5303. We find that, given the limited sensitivity of SDSS, strong coronal line emission is extremely rare, with only $\sim 0.03$% of the sample showing at least one coronal line, significantly lower than the fraction of galaxies showing optical narrow line ratios ($\sim 17$%) or mid-infrared colors ($\sim 2$%) indicative of nuclear activity. The coronal line luminosities exhibit a large dynamic range, with values ranging from $\sim10^{34}$ to $10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We find that a vast majority ($\sim 80$%) of coronal line emitters in dwarf galaxies ($M_* < {9.6} \times 10^9$ M$_\odot$) do not display optical narrow line ratios indicative of nuclear activity, in contrast to higher mass galaxies ($\sim 17$%). Moreover, we find that the highest ionization potential lines are preferentially found in lower mass galaxies. These findings are consistent with the theory that lower mass black holes found in lower mass galaxies produce a hotter accretion disk, which in turn enhances the higher ionization coronal line spectrum. Future coronal line searches with 30 m class telescopes or JWST may provide a pathway into uncovering the intermediate mass black hole population., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Ricci, C., et al., The merger of two or more galaxies can enhance the inflow of material from galactic scales into the close environments of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), obscuring and feeding the supermassive black hole (SMBH). Both recent simulations and observations of AGN in mergers have confirmed that mergers are related to strong nuclear obscuration. However, it is still unclear how AGN obscuration evolves in the last phases of the merger process. We study a sample of 60 luminous and ultra-luminous IR galaxies (U/LIRGs) from the GOALS sample observed by NuSTAR. We find that the fraction of AGNs that are Compton thick (CT; NH ≥ 1024 cm-2) peaks at 74+14 −19 per cent at a late merger stage, prior to coalescence, when the nuclei have projected separations (dsep) of 0.4-6 kpc. A similar peak is also observed in the median NH [(1.6 ± 0.5) × 1024 cm−2]. The vast majority (85+7 −9 per cent) of the AGNs in the final merger stages (dsep ≤ 10 kpc) are heavily obscured (NH ≥ 1023 cm−2), and the median NH of the accreting SMBHs in our sample is systematically higher than that of local hard X-ray-selected AGN, regardless of the merger stage. This implies that these objects have very obscured nuclear environments, with the NH ≥ 1023 cm−2 gas almost completely covering the AGN in late mergers. CT AGNs tend to have systematically higher absorption-corrected X-ray luminosities than less obscured sources. This could either be due to an evolutionary effect, with more obscured sources accreting more rapidly because they have more gas available in their surroundings, or to a selection bias. The detection and characterization of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in local low mass galaxies is crucial to our understanding of the origins of SMBHs. This statement assumes that low mass galaxies have had a relatively quiet cosmic history, so that their black holes have not undergone significant growth and therefore can be treated as relics of the original SMBH seeds. While recent studies have found optical signatures of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in a growing population of dwarf galaxies, these studies are biased against low metallicity and relatively merger-free galaxies, thus missing precisely the demographic in which to search for the relics of SMBH seeds. Here, we report the detection of the [\ion{Si}{6}]1.963~$\mu$m coronal line (CL), a robust indicator of an AGN in the galaxy SDSS~J160135.95+311353.7, a nearby ($z=0.031$) low metallicity galaxy with a stellar mass approximately an order of magnitude lower than the LMC ($M_*\approx10^{8.56}$~M$_\odot$) and no optical evidence for an AGN. The AGN bolometric luminosity implied by the CL detection is $\approx10^{42}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, precisely what is predicted from its near-infrared continuum emission based on well-studied AGNs. Our results are consistent with a black hole of mass $\approx~10^5$~M$_\odot$, in line with expectations based on its stellar mass. This is the first time a near-infrared CL has been detected in a low mass, low metallicity galaxy with no optical evidence for AGN activity, providing confirmation of the utility of infrared CLs in finding AGNs in low mass galaxies when optical diagnostics fail. Recent observations have shown that a large portion of the mid--infrared (MIR) spectrum of active galactic nuclei (AGN) stems from the polar regions. In this paper, we investigate the effects of this polar gas on the X-ray spectrum of AGN using ray-tracing simulations. Two geometries for the polar gas are considered, (1) a hollow cone corresponding to the best fit MIR model and (2) a filled cone, both with varying column densities (ranging from $10^{21}-10^{22.5}$ cm$^{-2}$) along with a torus surrounding the central X-ray source. We find that the polar gas leads to an increase in the equivalent width of several fluorescence lines below $5$ keV (e.g., O, Ne, Mg, Si). A filled geometry is unlikely for the polar component, as the X-ray spectra of many Type 1 AGN would show signatures of obscuration. We also consider extra emission from the narrow line region such as a scattered power-law with many photoionised lines from obscured AGNs, and different opening angles and matter compositions for the hollow cone. These simulations will provide a fundamental benchmark for current and future high spectral resolution X-ray instruments, such as those on board XRISM and Athena., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS

It is now clear that a significant population of accreting black holes are undetected by commonly employed optical, mid-infrared color, X-ray, and radio selection methods due to obscuration or contamination of the emission from the nuclear region caused by star formation in the host galaxy. These elusive active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are an important component of the AGN population. They are often found in mergers, where significant black hole growth likely takes place, and in the lowest mass galaxies or galaxies that lack classical bulges, a demographic that places important constraints on models of supermassive black hole seed formation and merger-free models of AGN fueling. In this work, we demonstrate the power of James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in uncovering and characterizing these elusive AGNs. We present an integrated modeling approach in which both the line and emergent continuum is predicted from gas exposed to the ionizing radiation from a young starburst and an AGN, focusing specifically on the spectral diagnostics available through JWST, and provide predictions on the detectability of key diagnostic lines by the NIRSpec and MIRI spectrometers, assuming typical conditions for the gas. We demonstrate the crucial need for JWST in uncovering low level accretion activity even in nearby galaxies and out to redshifts of ~ 1 - 3, depending on the ionization parameter, and gas phase metallicity. We present a redshift-dependent selection strategy that can be used to identify promising elusive AGN candidates for future follow-up study. In contrast to massive galaxies with Solar or super-Solar gas phase metallicities, very few Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are found in low-metallicity dwarf galaxies. Such a population could provide insight into the origins of supermassive black holes. Here we report near-infrared spectroscopic and X-ray observations of SDSS J105621.45+313822.1, a low-mass, low-metallicity galaxy with optical narrow line ratios consistent with star forming galaxies but a broad H$\alpha$ line and mid-infrared colors consistent with an AGN. We detect the [Si VI] 1.96$\mu$m coronal line and a broad Pa$\alpha$ line with a FWHM of $850 \pm 25$~km~s$^{-1}$. Together with the optical broad lines and coronal lines seen in the SDSS spectrum, we confirm the presence of a highly accreting black hole with mass $(2.2 \pm 1.3) \times 10^{6}$~M$_{\odot}$, with a bolometric luminosity of $\approx10^{44}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ based on the coronal line luminosity, implying a highly accreting AGN. Chandra observations reveal a weak nuclear point source with $L_{\textrm{X,2-10 keV}} = (2.3 \pm 1.2) \times 10^{41}$~erg~s$^{-1}$, $\sim 2$ orders of magnitude lower than that predicted by the mid-infrared luminosity, suggesting that the AGN is highly obscured despite showing broad lines in the optical spectrum. While it is generally believed that supermassive black holes (SMBH) lie in most galaxies with bulges, few SMBHs have been confirmed in bulgeless galaxies. Identifying such a population could provide important insights to the BH seed population and secular BH growth. To this end, we obtained near-infrared spectroscopic observations of a sample of low-redshift bulgeless galaxies with mid-infrared colors suggestive of AGN. We find additional evidence of AGN activity (such as coronal lines and broad permitted lines) in 69$\%$ (9/13) of the sample, demonstrating that mid-infrared selection is a powerful tool to detect AGN. More than half of the galaxies with confirmed AGN activity show fast outflows in [O III] in the optical and/or [Si VI] in the NIR, with the latter generally having much faster velocities that are also correlated to their spatial extent. We are also able to obtain virial BH masses for some targets and find they fall within the scatter of other late-type galaxies in the $M_{\rm{BH}}$-$M_{\rm{stellar}}$ relation. The fact that they lack a significant bulge component indicates that secular processes, likely independent of major mergers, grew these BHs to supermassive sizes. Finally, we analyze the rotational gas kinematics and find two notable exceptions: two AGN hosts with outflows that appear to be rotating faster than expected. There is an indication that these two galaxies have stellar masses significantly lower than expected from their dark matter halo masses. Targeted searches for dual active galactic nuclei (AGN), with separations 1 -- 10 kpc, have yielded relatively few successes. A recent pilot survey by Satyapal et al. has demonstrated that mid-infrared (mid-IR) pre-selection has the potential to significantly improve the success rate for dual AGN confirmation in late stage galaxy mergers. In this paper, we combine mid-IR selection with spatially resolved optical AGN diagnostics from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey to identify a candidate dual AGN in the late stage major galaxy merger SDSS J140737.17+442856.2 at z=0.143. The nature of the dual AGN is confirmed with Chandra X-ray observations that identify two hard X-ray point sources with intrinsic (corrected for absorption) 2-10 keV luminosities of 4*10^41 and 3.5*10^43 erg/s separated by 8.3 kpc. The neutral hydrogen absorption (~10^22 cm^-2) towards the two AGN is lower than in duals selected solely on their mid-IR colours, indicating that strategies that combine optical and mid-IR diagnostics may complement techniques that identify the highly obscured dual phase, such as at high X-ray energies or mid-IR only., MNRAS Letters, in press

Using 8.4 years of photometry from the AllWISE/NEOWISE multi-epoch catalogs, we compare the mid-infrared variability properties of a sample of 2197 dwarf galaxies (M_stellar < 2 x 10^9 h^-2 M_sun) to a sample of 6591 more massive galaxies (M_stellar >= 10^10 h^-2 M_sun) matched in mid-infrared apparent magnitude. We find only 2 dwarf galaxies with mid-infrared variability, a factor of ~10 less frequent than the more massive galaxies (p = 6 x 10^-6), consistent with previous findings of optical variability in low-mass and dwarf galaxies using data with a similar baseline and cadence. Within the more massive control galaxy population, we see no evidence for a stellar mass dependence of mid-infrared variability, suggesting that this apparent reduction in the frequency of variable objects occurs below a stellar mass of ~10^10 h^-2 M_sun. Compared to the more massive galaxies, AGNs selected in dwarf galaxies using either their mid-infrared color or optical emission line classification are systematically missed by variability selection. We report the discovery of a buried, active supermassive black hole in SDSS J085153.64+392611.76, a bulgeless Seyfert 2 (Sy2) galaxy. Keck near-infrared observations reveal a hidden broad line region, allowing for the rare case where strong constraints can be placed on both the black hole mass and bulge component. Using virial mass estimators, we obtain a black hole mass of log($M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot}$) = $6.78 \pm 0.50$. This is one of the only Sy2 AGN hosted in a bulgeless galaxy with a virial black hole mass estimate and could provide important constraints on the formation scenarios of the black hole seed population. The lack of a bulge component suggests that the SMBH has grown quiescently, likely caused by secular processes independent of major mergers. In the absence of a detectable bulge component, we find the $M_{\rm{BH}}$ - $M_{\rm{stellar}}$ relation to be more reliable than the $M_{\rm{BH}}$ - $M_{\rm{bulge}}$ relation. In addition, we detect extended narrow Pa$\alpha$ emission that allows us to create a rotation curve where we see counter-rotating gas within the central kiloparsec (kpc). Possible causes of this counter-rotation include a galactic bar or disruption of the inner gas by a recent fly-by of a companion galaxy. The co-evolution of galaxies and the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at their centers via hierarchical galaxy mergers is a key prediction of $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. As gas and dust are funneled to the SMBHs during the merger, the SMBHs light up as active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In some cases, a merger of two galaxies can encounter a third galaxy, leading to a triple merger, which would manifest as a triple AGN if all three SMBHs are simultaneously accreting. Using high-spatial resolution X-ray, near-IR, and optical spectroscopic diagnostics, we report here a compelling case of an AGN triplet with mutual separations < 10 kpc in the advanced merger SDSS J084905.51+111447.2 at z = 0.077. The system exhibits three nuclear X-ray sources, optical spectroscopic line ratios consistent with AGN in each nucleus, a high excitation near-IR coronal line in one nucleus, and broad Pa$\alpha$ detections in two nuclei. Hard X-ray spectral fitting reveals a high column density along the line of sight, consistent with the picture of late-stage mergers hosting heavily absorbed AGNs. Our multiwavelength diagnostics support a triple AGN scenario, and we rule out alternative explanations such as star formation activity, shock-driven emission, and emission from fewer than three AGN. The dynamics of gravitationally bound triple SMBH systems can dramatically reduce binary SMBH inspiral timescales, providing a possible means to surmount the "Final Parsec Problem." AGN triplets in advanced mergers are the only observational forerunner to bound triple SMBH systems and thus offer a glimpse of the accretion activity and environments of the AGNs prior to the gravitationally-bound triple phase., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. We present a study of nearby galaxies as a function of their [3.4]-[4.6] colour. Galaxies that are red in their [3.4]-[4.6] colour contain heated dust and the reddest systems ([3.4]-[4.6] > 0.5) are classified as AGN by some selection criteria. The sample discussed here includes nearby galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) that are also in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) catalogue. We calculate the number density of galaxies, in the form of the luminosity and mass functions, using the V/Vmax method and a Stepwise Maximum Likelihood method that has been modified to account for the additional colour selection. The reddest galaxies which have [3.4]-[4.6] > 0.8 and are sometimes classified as AGN by their colour, make up 0.2% of nearby galaxies. However, the reddest galaxies are a rising fraction of the low mass galaxy population. Identifying the lowest mass (M < 10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$ ) red ([3.4]-[4.6] > 0.8) galaxies as AGN is surprising given that none are optical AGN or composites, in contrast with their more massive (M > 10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ ) red galaxy counter- parts that are dominated by optical AGN and composites (86.4%). We also show that these low mass red galaxies are associated with higher specific star formation rates than their bluer counterparts. While the properties of this relatively rare segment of nearby low-mass galaxies are intriguing, particularly if they are associated with AGN activity, there is not yet enough evidence to determine whether it is AGN or unusual star formation that is driving red colours in these systems., Accepted to MNRAS, 12 pages, 5 figures

Observations and theoretical simulations suggest that a significant fraction of merger-triggered accretion onto supermassive black holes is highly obscured, particularly in late-stage galaxy mergers, when the black hole is expected to grow most rapidly. Starting with the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer all-sky survey, we identified a population of galaxies whose morphologies suggest ongoing interaction and which exhibit red mid-infrared colors often associated with powerful active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In a follow-up to our pilot study, we now present Chandra/ACIS and XMM-Newton X-ray observations for the full sample of the brightest 15 IR-preselected mergers. All mergers reveal at least one nuclear X-ray source, with 8 out of 15 systems exhibiting dual nuclear X-ray sources, highly suggestive of single and dual AGNs. Combining these X-ray results with optical line ratios and with near-IR coronal emission line diagnostics, obtained with the near-IR spectrographs on the Large Binocular Telescope, we confirm that 13 out of the 15 mergers host AGNs, two of which host dual AGNs. Several of these AGNs are not detected in the optical. All X-ray sources appear X-ray weak relative to their mid-infrared continuum, and of the nine X-ray sources with sufficient counts for spectral analysis, eight reveal strong evidence of high absorption with column densities of $N_\mathrm{H} \gtrsim 10^{23}$~cm$^{-2}$. These observations demonstrate that a significant population of single and dual AGNs are missed by optical studies, due to high absorption, adding to the growing body of evidence that the epoch of peak black hole growth in mergers occurs in a highly obscured phase., Comment: 29 pages, 22 figures; (Main text: 17 pages, 4 figures)

Intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs), with masses between 100 to 10^5 M_\odot, represent the link between stellar mass black holes and the supermassive black holes that reside in galaxy centers. While IMBHs are crucial to our understanding of black hole seed formation, black holes of less than \approx 10^4 M_\odot eluded detection by traditional searches. Observations of the infrared coronal lines (CLs) offer us one of the most promising tools to discover IMBHs in galaxies. We have modeled the infrared emission line spectrum that is produced by gas photoionized by an AGN radiation field and explored for the first time the dependence of the infrared CL spectrum on black hole mass over the range of 10^2 M_\odot to 10^8 M_\odot. We show that infrared CLs are expected to be prominent in the spectra of accreting IMBHs and can potentially be a powerful probe of the black hole mass in AGNs. We identify key emission line ratios in the 1-30 \mu m range that are most sensitive to black hole mass. While variations in accretion rate and the physical parameters of the gas can also affect the CL spectrum, we demonstrate that the effect of black hole mass is likely to be the most dramatic over the mass range explored in our models. We conduct for the first time a theoretical investigation of the mid-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) produced by dust heated by an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and an extreme starburst. These models employ an integrated modeling approach using photoionization and stellar population synthesis models in which both the line and emergent continuum is predicted from gas exposed to the ionizing radiation from a young starburst and an AGN. In this work, we focus on the infrared colors from the {\it Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer}, predicting the dependence of the colors on the input radiation field, the ISM conditions, the obscuring column, and the metallicity. We find that an extreme starburst can mimic an AGN in two band mid-infrared color cuts employed in the literature. However, the three band color cuts employed in the literature require starbursts with extremely high ionization parameters or gas densities . We show that the extreme mid-IR colors seen in some blue compact dwarf galaxies are not due to metallicity but rather a combination of high ionization parameters and high column densities. Based on our theoretical calculations, we present a theoretical mid-infrared color cut that will exclude even the most extreme starburst that we have modeled in this work. The theoretical AGN demarcation region presented here can be used to identify elusive AGN candidates for future follow-up studies with the {\it James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)}. The role of galaxy mergers in fueling active galactic nuclei (AGN) is still debated, owing partly to selection effects inherent to studies of the merger/AGN connection. In particular, luminous AGN are often heavily obscured in late-stage mergers. Mid-infrared (IR) color selection of dust-enshrouded AGN with, e.g., the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has uncovered large new populations of obscured AGN. However, this method is sensitive mainly to AGN that dominate emission from the host. To understand how these selection biases affect mid-IR studies of the merger/AGN connection, we simulate the evolution of obscured AGN throughout galaxy mergers. Although mid-IR colors closely trace luminous, obscured AGN, we show that nearly half of merger-triggered AGN are missed with common mid-IR selection criteria, even in late-stage, gas-rich major mergers. At z < 0.5, where merger signatures and dual nuclei can most easily be detected, we find that a more lenient W1-W2 > 0.5 cut greatly improves completeness without significantly decreasing reliability. Extreme nuclear starbursts are briefly able to mimic this AGN signature, but this is largely irrelevant in mergers, where such starbursts are accompanied by AGN. We propose a two-color cut that yields high completeness and reliability even in starbursting systems. Further, we show that mid-IR color selection very effectively identifies dual AGN hosts, with the highest fraction at the smallest separations (< 3 kpc). Thus, many merger hosts of mid-IR AGN should contain unresolved dual AGN; these are ideal targets for high-resolution follow-up, particularly with the James Webb Space Telescope., 16 pages, 15 figures; published in MNRAS after minor revisions & some updated figures

In our recent work, we demonstrated that a novel X-ray scaling method, originally introduced for Galactic black holes, could be reliably extended to estimate the mass of supermassive black holes accreting at moderate to high level. Here, we apply this X-ray scaling method to ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) to constrain their \mbh. Using 49 ULXs with multiple \xmm\ observations, we infer that ULXs host both stellar mass BHs and intermediate mass BHs. The majority of the sources of our sample seem to be consistent with the hypothesis of highly accreting massive stellar BHs with $M_{\rm BH}\sim100\,M_{\odot}$. Our results are in general agreement with the \mbh\ values obtained with alternative methods, including model-independent variability methods. This suggests that the X-ray scaling method is an actual scale-independent method that can be applied to all BH systems accreting at moderate-high rate., 14 pages, 10 figures

The observed faintness of infrared fine-structure line emission along with the warm far-infrared (FIR) colors of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) is a long-standing problem. In this work, we calculate the line and continuum properties of a cloud exposed to an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) and starburst spectral energy distribution (SED). We use an integrated modeling approach, predicting the spectrum of ionized, atomic, and molecular environments in pressure equilibrium. We find that the effects of high ratios of impinging ionizing radiation density to particle density (i.e. high ionization parameters, or U) can reproduce many ULIRG observational characteristics. Physically, as U increases, the fraction of UV photons absorbed by dust increases, corresponding to fewer photons available to photoionize and heat the gas, producing what is known as a "dust-bounded" nebula. We show that high U effects can explain the "[C II] deficit", the ~1 dex drop in the [C II] 158 micron /FIR ratio seen in ULIRGs when compared to starburst or normal galaxies. Additionally, by increasing U through increasing the ionizing photon flux, warmer dust and thus higher IRAS F(60)/F(100) ratios result. High U effects also predict an increase in [O I]63 micron /[C II] 158 micron and a gradual decline in [O III] 88 micron /FIR, similar to the magnitude of the trends observed, and yield a reasonable fit to [Ne V]14 micron /FIR ratio AGN observations.

The Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) combines data from NASA's Spitzer, Chandra, Hubble and GALEX observatories, together with ground-based data into a comprehensive imaging and spectroscopic survey of over 200 low redshift Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs). The LIRGs are a complete subset of the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample (RBGS). The LIRGs targeted in GOALS span the full range of nuclear spectral types defined via traditional optical line-ratio diagrams as well as interaction stages. They provide an unbiased picture of the processes responsible for enhanced infrared emission in galaxies in the local Universe. As an example of the analytic power of the multi-wavelength GOALS dataset, we present data for the interacting system VV 340 (IRAS F14547+2449). Between 80-95% of the total far-infrared emission (or about 5E11 solar luminosities) originates in VV 340 North. While the IRAC colors of VV 340 North and South are consistent with star-forming galaxies, both the Spitzer IRS and Chandra ACIS data indicate the presence of a buried AGN in VV 340 North. The GALEX far and near-UV fluxes imply a extremely large infrared "excess" (IRX) for the system (IR/FUV = 81) which is well above the correlation seen in starburst galaxies. Most of this excess is driven by VV 340 N, which alone has an IR excess of nearly 400. The VV 340 system seems to be comprised of two very different galaxies - an infrared luminous edge-on galaxy (VV 340 North) that dominates the long-wavelength emission from the system and which hosts a buried AGN, and a face-on starburst (VV 340 South) that dominates the short-wavelength emission., 17 pages, 2 tables, 7 postscript figures. We have conducted a comprehensive mid-IR spectroscopic investigation of 67 Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Line Regions (LINERs) using archival observations from the high resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. Using the [NeV] 14 and 24um lines as active galactic nuclei (AGN) diagnostics, we detect active black holes in 39% of the galaxies in our sample, many of which show no signs of activity in either the optical or X-ray bands. In particular, a detailed comparison of multi-wavelength diagnostics shows that optical studies fail to detect AGN in galaxies with large far-IR luminosities. These observations emphasize that the nuclear power source in a large percentage of LINERs is obscured in the optical. Indeed, the majority of LINERs show mid-IR [NeV]14/[NeV]24um flux ratios well below the theoretical low-density limit, suggesting that there is substantial extinction toward even the [NeV]-emitting region . Combining optical, X-ray, and mid-IR diagnostics, we find an AGN detection rate in LINERs of 74%, higher than previously reported statistics of the fraction of LINERs hosting AGN. The [NeV]24um /[OIV]26um mid-IR line flux ratio in "AGN-LINERs" is similar to that of standard AGN, suggesting that the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the intrinsic optical/UV continuum is similar in the two. This result is in contrast to previous suggestions of a UV deficit in the intrinsic broadband continuum emission in AGN-LINERs. Consistent with our finding of extinction to the [NeV]-emitting region, we propose that extinction may also be responsible for the observed optical/UV deficit seen in at least some AGN-LINERs., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Detecting Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in galaxies dominated by powerful nuclear star formation and extinction effects poses a unique challenge. Due to the longer wavelength emission and the ionization potential of Ne^3+, infrared [Ne V] emission lines are thought to be excellent AGN diagnostics. However, stellar evolution models predict Wolf-Rayet stars in young stellar clusters emit significant numbers of photons capable of creating Ne^4+. Recent observations of [Ne V] emission in optically classified starburst galaxies require us to investigate whether [Ne V] can arise from star-formation activity and not an AGN. In this work, we calculate the optical and IR spectrum of gas exposed to a young starburst and AGN SED. We find: 1) a range of parameters where [Ne V] emission can be explained solely by star-formation and 2) a range of relative AGN to starburst luminosities that reproduce the [Ne V] observations, yet leaves the optical spectrum looking like a starburst. We also find infrared emission-line diagnostics are much more sensitive to the AGN than optical diagnostics, particularly for weak AGN. We apply our model to the optically classified, yet [Ne V] emitting, starburst galaxy NGC 3621. We find, when taking the IR and optical spectrum into account, about 30 - 50% of the galaxy's total luminosity is due to an AGN. Our calculations show that [Ne V] emission is almost always the result of AGN activity. We report the discovery using Spitzers high resolution spectrograph of 7 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in a sample of 32 late-type galaxies that show no definitive signatures of AGN in their optical spectra. Our observations suggest that the AGN detection rate in late-type galaxies is possibly 4 times larger than what optical spectroscopic observations alone suggest. We demonstrate using photoionization models with an input AGN and an extreme EUV-bright starburst ionizing radiation field that the observed mid-infrared line ratios cannot be replicated unless an AGN contribution, in some cases as little as 10% of the total galaxy luminosity, is included. These models show that when the fraction of the total luminosity due to the AGN is low, optical diagnostics are insensitive to the presence of the AGN. In this regime of parameter space, the mid-infrared diagnostics offer a powerful tool for uncovering AGN missed by optical spectroscopy. The AGN bolometric luminosities in our sample range from ~3 X 10^41 - ~2 X 10^43 ergs s^-1, which, based on the Eddington limit, corresponds to a lower mass limit for the black hole that ranges from ~3 X 10^3Mdot to as high as ~1.5 X 10^5Mdot. These lower mass limits however do not put a strain on the well-known relationship between the black hole mass and the host galaxy's stellar velocity dispersion established in predominantly early-type galaxies. Our findings add to the growing evidence that black holes do form and grow in low-bulge environments and that they are significantly more common than optical studies indicate.

There is mounting evidence that supermassive black holes form and grow in bulgeless galaxies. However, a robust determination of the fraction of AGNs in bulgeless galaxies, an important constraint to models of supermassive black hole seed formation and merger-free models of AGN fueling, is unknown, since optical studies have been shown to be incomplete for low mass AGNs. In a recent study using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, we discovered hundreds of bulgeless galaxies that display mid-infrared signatures of extremely hot dust suggestive of powerful accreting massive black holes, despite having no signatures of black hole activity at optical wavelengths. Here we report X-ray follow-up observations of J122434.66+555522.3, a nearby (z=0.052) isolated bulgeless galaxy that contains an unresolved X-ray source detected at the 3 sigma level by XMM-Newton with an observed luminosity uncorrected for intrinsic absorption of L{2-10~keV}=1.1+/-0.4 10^40 ergs/s. Ground-based near-infrared spectroscopy with the Large Binocular Telescope together with multiwavelength observations from ultraviolet to millimeter wavelengths together suggest that J1224+5555 harbors a highly absorbed AGN with an intrinsic absorption of ~NH >10^24 cm^-2. The hard X-ray luminosity of the putative AGN corrected for absorption is L{2-10~keV}~3x10^42 ergs/s, which, depending on the bolometric correction factor, corresponds to a bolometric luminosity of the AGN of 6x10^43ergs/s - 3x10^44 erg/s, and a lower mass limit for the black hole of MBH~2x10^6 Msun, based on the Eddington limit., Accepted to ApJ, 14 pages, 7 figures

We report the discovery of an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) in the nearby SAd galaxy NGC 3621 using Spitzer high spectral resolution observations. These observations reveal the presence of [NeV] 14 um and 24 um emission which is centrally concentrated and peaks at the position of the near-infrared nucleus. Using the [NeV] line luminosity, we estimate that the nuclear bolometric luminosity of the AGN is ~ 5 X 10^41 ergs s^-1, which corresponds based on the Eddington limit to a lower mass limit of the black hole of ~ 4 X 10^3 Msun. Using an order of magnitude estimate for the bulge mass based on the Hubble type of the galaxy, we find that this lower mass limit does not put a strain on the well-known relationship between the black hole mass and the host galaxy's stellar velocity dispersion established in predominantly early-type galaxies. Mutli-wavelength follow-up observations of NGC 3621 are required to obtain more precise estimates of the bulge mass, black hole mass, accretion rate, and nuclear bolometric luminosity. Archival observations of 18 starburst galaxies that span a wide range in metallicity reveal for the first time a correlation between the ratio of emission line fluxes of [FeII] at 26 microns and [NeII] at 12.8 microns and the 7.7 micron PAH strength, with the [FeII]/[NeII] flux ratio decreasing with increasing PAH strength. We also find a strong correlation between the [FeII]/[NeII] flux ratio and the host galaxy metallicity, with the flux ratio decreasing with increasing metallicity. Since [FeII] emission has been linked primarily to supernova shocks, we attribute the high [FeII]/[NeII] ratios in low-metallicity galaxies to enhanced supernova activity. We consider this to be a dominant mechanism for PAH destruction, rather than grain destruction in photoionized regions surrounding young massive stars. We also consider whether the extreme youth of the low-metallicity galaxies is responsible for the lack of PAH emission.

We present results from a high resolution X-ray imaging study of nearby LINERs observed by Chandra. This study complements and extends previous X-ray studies of LINERs, focusing on the under-explored population of nearby dust-enshrouded infrared-bright LINERs. The sample consists of 15 IR-bright LINERs (L_FIR/L_B > 3), with distances that range from 11 to 26 Mpc. Combining our sample with previous Chandra studies we find that ~ 51% (28/55) of the LINERs display compact hard X-ray cores. The nuclear 2-10 keV luminosities of the galaxies in this expanded sample range from ~ 2 X 10^38 ergs s^-1 to ~ 2 X 10^44 ergs s^-1. We find an intriguing trend in the Eddington ratio vs. L_FIR and L_FIR/L_B for the AGN-LINERs in the expanded sample that extends over seven orders of magnitude in L/L_Edd. This correlation may imply a link between black hole growth, as measured by the Eddington ratio, and the star formation rate (SFR), as measured by the far-IR luminosity and IR-brightness ratio. If the far-IR luminosity is an indicator of the molecular gas content in our sample of LINERs, our results may further indicate that the mass accretion rate scales with the host galaxy's fuel supply. We discuss the potential implications of our results in the framework of black hole growth and AGN fueling in low luminosity AGN. (Abridged)

We present a study of the [CII] 157.74 um fine-structure line in a sample of 15 ultraluminous infrared (IR) galaxies (L_IR>10^12 Lsun; ULIRGs) using the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We confirm the observed order of magnitude deficit (compared to normal and starburst galaxies) in the strength of the [CII] line relative to the far-IR dust continuum emission found in our initial report (Luhman et al. 1998), but here with a sample that is twice as large. This result suggests that the deficit is a general phenomenon affecting 4/5 ULIRGs. We present an analysis using observations of generally acknowledged photodissociation region (PDR) tracers ([CII], [OI] 63 and 145 um, and FIR continuum emission), which suggests that a high UV flux G_o incident on a moderate density n PDR could explain the deficit. However, comparisons with other ULIRG observations, including CO (1-0), [CI] (1-0), and 6.2 um polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission, suggest that high G_o/n PDRs alone cannot produce a self-consistent solution that is compatible with all of the observations. We propose that non-PDR contributions to the FIR continuum can explain the apparent [CII] deficiency. Here, unusually high G_o and/or n physical conditions in ULIRGs as compared to those in normal and starburst galaxies are not required to explain the [CII] deficit. Dust-bounded photoionization regions, which generate much of the FIR emission but do not contribute significant [CII] emission, offer one possible physical origin for this additional non-PDR component. Such environments may also contribute to the observed suppression of FIR fine-structure emission from ionized gas and PAHs, as well as the warmer FIR colors found in ULIRGs. Science objectives for the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) include a large component of galaxy surveys, both imaging and spectroscopy. The Hubble Deep Field datasets include the deepest observations ever made in the ultraviolet, optical and near infrared, reaching depths comparable to that expected for NGST spectroscopy. We present the source counts, galaxy sizes and isophotal filling factors of the HDF-South images. The observed integrated galaxy counts reach >500 galaxies per square arcminute at AB29mag. Using the HDF-S NICMOS image, we show that galaxies are smaller in the near infrared than they are in the optical. We analyze the isophotal filling factor of the HDF-S STIS image, and show that this image is mostly empty sky even at the limits of galaxy detection, a conclusion we expect to hold true for NGST spectroscopy. At the surface brightness limits expected for NGST imaging, however, about a quarter of the sky is occupied by the outer isophotes of AB, 27 pages including 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, June 2000, abridged abstract

We report the detection of proper motions in [Fe II] 1.644 μm emission among the southeasternmost features in the Herbig-Haro object complex GGD 37. Imaging observations were made over a period of 5 yr, at epochs 1993.67, 1996.71, and 1998.68, that reveal proper-motion velocities of 400 ± 200 km s-1 at GGD 37:W2 and 850 ± 200 km s-1 at a newly identified object, designated GGD 37:RWPF 1. We believe the proper-motion velocity of GGD 37:RWPF 1 is the highest found to date for a Herbig-Haro object. The direction of GGD 37:RWPF 1's proper motion is almost due west, away from the nearby young stellar object complex in Cep A East. GGD 37:W2's direction of proper motion is north/northwest, which does not lead back to any of the compact objects in Cep A East.

We present high spectral resolution (λ/δλ103) Paβ(1.28 μm) and Brγ(2.17 μm), 3.29 μm dust feature, and near-infrared broadband images of the Arp 299=NGC 3690/IC 694 galaxy system. The emission is found to be concentrated at the positions of three active regions, known as sources A, B, and C. From our Brγ/Paβ flux ratio we find the visual extinction toward the ionized gas in A, B, and C is ~6, 6, and 2 magnitudes, respectively, assuming case B recombination and a foreground screen geometry for the obscuring material. Our observations can be explained entirely by a starburst model for the Arp 299 system. The putative active galactic nucleus (AGN) in source A does not dominate the properties of this source. We see no evidence of broad recombination lines. In addition, the ratio of the 3.29 μm dust feature to total luminosity, a tracer of starburst activity, is consistent in each source with that seen in M82 and other starburst galaxies. Also, our imaging observations reveal that the dust feature emission is concentrated in the nucleus of source A, contrary to the extended annular distribution of the feature emission seen surrounding the nucleus of the more distant Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469. In this galaxy, the absence of the feature emission in the nucleus has been attributed to the destruction of the dust carriers in the hard radiation field surrounding the AGN. Our observations suggest that all of the active regions in Arp 299 are characterized by starburst episodes. The observed CO indices and Brγ equivalent widths imply that source B is older than source A and source C is the youngest star-forming region. Although these regions are probably complex physical systems not necessarily characterized by a single coeval population of stars, we have compared our observations with an instantaneous starburst model with a Salpeter initial mass function. Using this simple model, we find starburst ages of ~6 × 106, 8 × 106, and 4 × 106 for sources A, B, and C, respectively.

Based on far-infrared spectroscopy of a small sample of nearbyinfrared-bright and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with theISO Long Wavelength Spectrometer we find adramatic progression in ionic/atomic fine-structure emission line andmolecular/atomic absorption line characteristics in these galaxiesextending from strong [O III]52,88 μm and [N III]57 μm lineemission to detection of only faint [C II]158 μm line emissionfrom gas in photodissociation regions in the ULIRGs. The molecularabsorption spectra show varying excitation as well, extending fromgalaxies in which the molecular population mainly occupies the groundstate to galaxies in which there is significant population in higherlevels. In the case of the prototypical ULIRG, the merger galaxy Arp220, the spectrum is dominated by absorption lines of OH, H2O, CH,and [O I]. Low [O III]88 μm line flux relative to the integratedfar-infrared flux correlates with low excitation and does not appear tobe due to far-infrared extinction or to density effects. A progressiontoward soft radiation fields or very dusty H II regions may explainthese effects.
