Abstract Background Traumatic fractures occur frequently worldwide. However, research remains limited on the association between short-term exposure to temperature and traumatic fractures. This study aims to explore the impact of apparent temperature (AT) on emergency visits (EVs) due to traumatic fractures. Methods Based on EVs data for traumatic fractures and the contemporary meteorological data, a generalized Poisson regression model along with a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) were undertaken to determine the impact of AT on traumatic fracture EVs. Subgroup analysis by gender and age and sensitivity analysis were also performed. Results A total of 25,094 EVs for traumatic fractures were included in the study. We observed a wide “J”-shaped relationship between AT and risk of traumatic fractures, with AT above 9.5 °C positively associated with EVs due to traumatic fractures. The heat effects became significant at cumulative lag 0–11 days, and the relative risk (RR) for moderate heat (95th percentile, 35.7 °C) and extreme heat (99.5th percentile, 38.8 °C) effect was 1.311 (95% CI: 1.132–1.518) and 1.418 (95% CI: 1.191–1.688) at cumulative lag 0–14 days, respectively. The cold effects were consistently non-significant on single or cumulative lag days across 0–14 days. The heat effects were higher among male and those aged 18–65 years old. The sensitivity analysis results remained robust. Conclusion Higher AT is associated with cumulative and delayed higher traumatic fracture EVs. The male and those aged 18–65 years are more susceptible to higher AT.

Surface glint significantly reduces the measurement accuracy of remote sensing reflectance of water, Rrs, making it difficult to effectively use field measurements for studying water optical properties, accurately retrieving water quality parameters, and validating satellite remote sensing products. To accurately assess the effectiveness of various glint removal methods and enhance the accuracy of water reflectance measurements, a portable multiprobe high-resolution System (PMHRS) is designed. The system is composed of a spectrometer, fiber bundles, an irradiance probe, and three radiance probes. The reliability and measurement accuracy of the PMHRS are ensured through rigorous laboratory radiometric calibration and temperature correction. The comprehensive uncertainty of laboratory calibration ranges from 1.29% to 1.43% for irradiance calibration and from 1.47% to 1.59% for radiance calibration. Field measurement results show a strong correlation with both synchronous ASD data, and Sen2Cor-atmospherically corrected Sentinel-2B data (R2 = 0.949, RMSE = 0.013; R2 = 0.926, RMSE = 0.0105). The water-leaving radiance measurements obtained under different solar elevation angles using three methods (M99 method, polarization method, and SBA) demonstrate that the improved narrow field-of-view polarization probe effectively removes surface glint across various solar elevation angles (with overall better performance than the traditional M99 method). At a solar elevation angle of 69.7°, the MAPD and MAD between the measurements of this method and those of the SBA are 5.8% and 1.4 × 10−4, respectively. The results demonstrate that the PMHRS system outperforms traditional methods in sun glint removal, significantly enhancing the accuracy of water remote sensing reflectance measurements and improving the validation quality of satellite data. This work provides a crucial technical foundation for the development of high-resolution continuous observation platforms in complex aquatic environments. It holds significant implications for improving the accuracy of field-based water remote sensing reflectance measurements and for enhancing the quality of water ecological monitoring data and satellite validation data.

The clam Cyclina sinensis is an economically important marine species in China. However, overfishing, habitat destruction, and inbreeding have led to the destruction of genetic resources. Abstract Many Chinese wrinkle studies continue to use non-Chinese scales because few Chinese-based wrinkle scales have been developed. The study aims to develop a crow’s feet grading scale for Chinese individuals. We enrolled 608 healthy Chinese subjects and measured data through the DermaTOP system. We chose exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to reduce the dimensions of the data. A three-factor structure was obtained by using EFA, and it explained a cumulative total of 89.551% of the variance. A computational formula was obtained by calculating the total factor tilt scores and taking the variance contribution rate of three factors as the weight. Based on the computational formula, a grading map was designed and tested. The model validation was conducted using both subjective assessments from the expert panel and objective results from the model calculations. The results showed that our grading scale model is stable. This study developed a Chinese crow’s feet (CCF) grading scale, which included a parameter, a grading map, and literal descriptions. The CCF grading scale is a validated tool for evaluating the effects of cosmetics or specific therapies. More importantly, the CCF scale was developed based on objective data, which may inspire new ideas for wrinkle grading scale development in the future.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a common industrial organic solvent and environmental contaminant. People are exposed to TCE through occupational contact or environmental pollution, which leads to serious human health hazards. A large number of studies have shown that oxidative stress plays an important role in the TCE-induced multi-target organ toxicity. However, the research of related signaling pathways remains to be deepened. In this review, we summarized the epidemiological, animal, and cellular studies correlated to liver toxicity, kidney toxicity, cardiac developmental toxicity, placental developmental toxicity, neurodevelopmental toxicity, and autoimmune response induced by TCE. In addition, the possible molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress in TCE-induced toxicity were concluded, including DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, cell apoptosis, and abnormal activation of the immune system. Through literature review, we proposed that nuclear factor E2 related factor 2 may play an important role in mediating TCE-induced target organ toxicity, providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of adverse health effects caused by TCE.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) triggers a severe hypersensitivity syndrome in the occupational population dependent on dendritic cells (DCs). Chloral hydrate (CH), the major oxidative metabolite of TCE, has been proved to be the culprit causative substance of TCE-induced hypersensitivity by human patch tests. Because redox imbalance is essential for chemical sensitizers-induced maturation of DCs, we predicted that CH would activate DCs by the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-mediated antioxidant response. This study selected THP-1 cells as the in vitro DC model, and we evaluated the cell activation markers, intracellular oxidative stress, and Nrf2 pathway related genes expression in response to CH in THP-1 cells. CH displayed significant stimulation of THP-1 cells activation, including CD54 and CD86 expression, IL-8 release, and cell migration, and damaged the redox balance by triggering ROS generation, GSH consumption, and antioxidase activities modulation. The levels of Nrf2 and its downstream genes (HO-1 and NQO1) in mRNA and protein expressions were upregulated by CH, and CH also promoted the nuclear translocation of Nrf2. Subsequently, we investigated the effects of antioxidant on Nrf2-mediated cell defense in CH treated cells. Pretreatment with curcumin dramatically reduced cell activation and oxidative stress triggered by CH in THP-1 cells. We also confirmed the specific role of Nrf2 in CH-induced cell activation using NRF2-knockout cells. Deficiency of Nrf2 inhibited cell activation and downregulated HO-1 and NQO1 expression in CH-challenged cells. These findings suggest that Nrf2-dependent redox homeostasis plays a pivotal role in CH-induced activation of THP-1 cells, thereby providing new knowledge of the allergen as well as the molecular mechanism involving in TCE-induce hypersensitivity syndrome.

The innovation capability of marine science and technology plays an important role in the green and healthy development of marine economy. This paper adopted the panel data of 11 coastal provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) from 2007 to 2016. Firstly, a comprehensive evaluation system for marine technology innovation capabilities was established, and the Weight-TOPSIS method was used to evaluate the marine technology of 11 coastal provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) in China. Then the DEA-Malmquist method was used to calculate the green total factor rate of the marine economy in 11 coastal provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) . Finally, the influence of marine science and technology innovation ability on green total factor productivity of marine economy was studied by establishing GMM model. The results showed that scientific and technological innovation had a significant role in promoting the green total factor productivity of the marine economy, which was conducive to the sustainable development of the marine economy.

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) and their composites (SMPCs) are smart materials that can be stably deformed and then return to their original shape under external stimulation, thus having a memory of their shape. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an advanced technology for fabricating products using a digital software tool. Four-dimensional (4D) printing is a new generation of additive manufacturing technology that combines shape memory materials and 3D printing technology. Currently, 4D-printed SMPs and SMPCs are gaining considerable research attention and are finding use in various fields, including biomedical science. This review introduces SMPs, SMPCs, and 4D printing technologies, highlighting several special 4D-printed structures. It summarizes the recent research progress of 4D-printed SMPs and SMPCs in various fields, with particular emphasis on biomedical applications. Additionally, it presents an overview of the challenges and development prospects of 4D-printed SMPs and SMPCs and provides a preliminary discussion and useful reference for the research and application of 4D-printed SMPs and SMPCs.

BackgroundThe association of gestational hypertension (GH) and preeclampsia (PE) with offspring adiposity outcomes had controversial results in different studies.ObjectiveWe conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between maternal GH/PE and offspring adiposity outcomes.Search strategyStudies were identified in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases, with keywords including “gestational hypertension”, “preeclampsia”, “offspring”, “weight”, “cohort study”, etc., without year restriction. This study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42022292084.Selection criteriaWe set the selection criteria for six aspects: population, outcome, time frame, study design, and availability. For the studies included in the meta-analysis, we required the potential confounders in these studies have been adjusted.Data collection and analysisTwo reviewers independently evaluated the data from the included studies. The meta-analyses included mean differences, regression coefficients, and corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Results were performed using RevMan software (version 5.4; Cochrane Collaboration). Heterogeneity among the included studies was assessed using the I2 statistic.Main resultsA total of 16 studies were included in our review, 15 of which were evaluated as high quality. In all offspring, during the early life (28 days-36 months), GH/PE exposure was found to be not or inversely associated with offspring obesity, then become positively associated at larger ages (3-19 years old). In offspring with adverse birth outcomes, the maternal GH/PE-exposed group had a lower weight in the short term (28 days to 18 months), but there was a trend of rapid weight gain as they grew older, compared with the non-exposed group. The meta-analysis showed that the BMI of the female offspring in the maternal PE-exposed group was significantly higher than that of the non-exposed offspring (MD=1.04, 95% CI: 0.67~1.42, P < 0.05).ConclusionsThe systematic review suggested that maternal exposure to de novo hypertension disorders of pregnancy (HDP) was associated with obesity in offspring, extending from early childhood to adolescence. The meta-analysis showed that PE was associated with higher BMI in female offspring. More studies are needed to conduct stratified analyses by PE/GH, the severity of HDP, or gender.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO, identifier CRD42022292084.

Online learning resources (OLR) play an important role in teaching and learning in the process of online learning. Teachers will be satisfied with selectable and suitable online learning resources, which can promote their self-efficacy to facilitate online teaching and learning. This study proposed a model to examine the effects of the selectivity of online learning resources (SE-OLR) and the suitability of online learning resources (SU-OLR) on teachers’ online teaching satisfaction, and the mediating role of technology self-efficacy (TECHN-SE) and online teaching self-efficacy (OT-SE) between them. The results indicated that SE-OLR and SU-OLR positively affected teachers’ online teaching satisfaction; TECHN-SE and OT-SE positively influenced teachers’ online teaching satisfaction, while TECHN-SE and OT-SE played mediating roles between SE-OLR and SU-OLR and teachers’ online teaching satisfaction. The findings have implications for the design and development of online learning resources to improve teachers’ satisfaction and facilitate students’ learning effectiveness and teachers’ online teaching.

The verification of nuclear design software commonly uses direct comparison methods. Benchmark questions, classical programs, experimental data, manual solutions, etc., would be used as expected results to compare with program outputs to evaluate the reliability of software coding and the accuracy of the numerical solution. Because nuclear power software numerically simulates complex physical processes, it involves many partial differential equations. It is usually challenging to construct analytical or accurate solutions and is expensive to develop benchmark questions and experimental data. Hence, the quantity of verification examples is small. By using the direct comparison method, verification is complicated, high cost, and inadequate. Entering the validation process without adequate proof will adversely impact the effectiveness and efficiency of validation. Metamorphic testing is an indirect verification technology that cleverly combines the nature of the model with software verification. It evaluates the correctness of the code by examining whether the program satisfies the metamorphic relation. Without manual solutions or benchmark examples, it has broad application prospects in the field of nuclear power. A lightweight verification method based on metamorphic relation has been produced here. Metamorphic relations are identified from physical equations, numerical algorithms, and program specifications. Next, they are explicitly used to system, integration, and unit tests to improve test adequacy. Because no need to develop verification examples, this method can detect code errors as soon as possible at a low cost, improve test efficiency, avoid mistakes remaining in subsequent stages and reduce the overall cost of verification.

Summary: Bivalent chromatin is characterized by occupation of both activating and repressive histone modifications. Here, we develop a mathematical model that involves antagonistic histone modifications H3K4me3 and H3K27me3 to capture the key features of bivalent chromatin. Three necessary conditions for the emergence of bivalent chromatin are identified, including advantageous methylating activity over demethylating activity, frequent noise conversions of modifications, and sufficient nonlinearity. The first condition is further confirmed by analyzing the existing experimental data. Investigation of the composition of bivalent chromatin reveals that bivalent nucleosomes carrying both H3K4me3 and H3K27me3 account for no more than half of nucleosomes at the bivalent chromatin domain. We identify that bivalent chromatin not only allows transitions to multiple states but also serves as a stepping stone to facilitate a stepwise transition between repressive chromatin state and activating chromatin state and thus elucidate crucial roles of bivalent chromatin in mediating phenotypical plasticity during cell fate determination.

This study explores the relationship between teacher teaching support, student involvement, technical environment support, and online teaching effectiveness among K-12 students from the perspective of teaching systems (teacher teaching support, student involvement, and technical environment support) and the differences between online teaching methods and school levels, to provide guidance for teachers to teach using different online teaching methods and at different school levels. The data came from 13,225 primary and secondary school students who participated in online teaching in a district of Beijing. This study used the quantitative research method, we established a model of factors influencing the effectiveness of online teaching through Structural Equation Modelling, and analysed the survey data to explore the factors influencing the effectiveness of online teaching, the paths and their mediating effects. It is worth noting that this study found that student involvement and teacher teaching support significantly and negatively affected the perceived learning effect; teacher teaching support significantly and negatively affected continuance intention; and that the effects of teacher teaching support, student involvement, and technical environment support on satisfaction and the effects of student involvement on continuance intention showed significant differences. These differences affect related mediated pathways, resulting in significant differences in them. In addition, we found that "teacher teaching support [right arrow] student involvement [right arrow] perceived learning effect" was different from "teacher teaching support [right arrow] technical environment support [right arrow] perceived learning effect." We also found a masking effect for the "teacher teaching support [right arrow] student involvement [right arrow] perceived learning effect" and "teacher teaching support [right arrow] technical environment support [right arrow] continuance intention" pathways. These findings provide suggestions for teachers at different levels to design appropriate online teaching strategies to improve student learning.

Porcine viral diarrhea diseases affect the swine industry, resulting in significant economic losses. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) genotypes G1 and G2, and groups A and C of the porcine rotavirus, are major etiological agents of severe gastroenteritis and profuse diarrhea, particularly among piglets, with mortality rates of up to 100%. Based on the high prevalence rate and frequent co-infection of PEDV, RVA, and RVC, close monitoring is necessary to avoid greater economic losses. We have developed a multiplex TaqMan probe-based real-time PCR for the rapid simultaneous detection and differentiation of PEDV subtypes G1 and G2, RVA, and RVC. This test is highly sensitive, as the detection limits were 20 and 100 copies/μL for the G1 and G2 subtypes of PEDV, respectively, and 50 copies/μL for RVA and RVC, respectively. Eighty-eight swine clinical samples were used to evaluate this new test. The results were 100% in concordance with the standard methods. Since reassortment between porcine and human rotaviruses has been reported, this multiplex test not only provides a basis for the management of swine diarrheal viruses, but also has the potential to impact public health as well.

Walking error has been problematic for pulsed LiDAR based on a single threshold comparator. Traditionally, walk error must be suppressed by some time discrimination methods with extremely complex electronic circuits and high costs. In this paper, we propose a compact and flexible method for reducing walk error and achieving distance-intensity imaging. A single threshold comparator and commercial time digital converter chip are designed to measure the laser pulse’s time of flight and pulse width. In order to obtain first-class measurement accuracy, we designed a specific pulse width correction method based on the Kalman filter to correct the laser recording time, significantly reducing the ranging walk error by echo intensity fluctuation. In addition, the pulse width obtained by our method, which is a recording of the laser intensity, is conducive to target identification. The experiment results verified plane point clouds of various targets obtained by the proposed method with a plane flatness less than 0.34. The novel contribution of the study is to provide a highly integrated and cost-effective solution for the realization of high-precision ranging and multi-dimensional detection by pulsed LiDAR. It is valuable for realizing multi-dimension, outstanding performance, and low-cost LiDAR.

Optical phased arrays (OPAs) are essential optical elements in applications that require the ability to manipulate the light-wavefront, such as beam focusing and light steering. To miniaturize the optical components, active metasurfaces, especially graphene metasurfaces, are used as competent alternatives. However, the metasurface cannot achieve strong resonance effect and phase control function in the mid-infrared region only relying on a single-layer graphene. Here we present a graphene-metal hybrid metasurface that can generate a specific phase or a continuous sweep in the range of a 275°-based single-layer graphene structure. A key feature of our design is that the phase adjustment mainly depends on the combination mechanism of resonance intensity and frequency modulation. An all-solid-state, electrically tunable, and reflective OPA is designed by applying the bias voltage to a different pixel metasurface. The simulation results show that the maximum deflection angle of the OPA can reach 42.716°, and the angular resolution can reach 0.62°. This design can be widely applied to mid-infrared imaging, optical sensing, and optical communication systems.

We report on a self-adaptive waveform centroid algorithm that combines the selection of double-scale data and the intensity-weighted (DSIW) method for accurate LiDAR distance–intensity imaging. A time window is set to adaptively select the effective data. At the same time, the intensity-weighted method can reduce the influence of sharp noise on the calculation. The horizontal and vertical coordinates of the centroid point obtained by the proposed algorithm are utilized to record the distance and echo intensity information, respectively. The proposed algorithm was experimentally tested, achieving an average ranging error of less than 0.3 ns under the various noise conditions in the listed tests, thus exerting better precision compared to the digital constant fraction discriminator (DCFD) algorithm, peak (PK) algorithm, Gauss fitting (GF) algorithm, and traditional waveform centroid (TC) algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is fairly robust, with remarkably successful ranging rates of above 97% in all tests in this paper. Furthermore, the laser echo intensity measured by the proposed algorithm was proved to be robust to noise and to work in accordance with the transmission characteristics of LiDAR. Finally, we provide a distance–intensity point cloud image calibrated by our algorithm. The empirical findings in this study provide a new understanding of using LiDAR to draw multi-dimensional point cloud images.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are intensively investigated as adjuvants in new generation vaccines, while how these NPs promote the immune responses has not been well understood. In this research, we have tried to elucidate the possible pathways for layered double hydroxide (LDH) NPs to provoke immune responses. As previously reported, LDH NPs efficiently deliver antigens to antigen presenting cells (APCs). In this research, we have found that these internalized LDH NPs are not released by these APCs within 8 h. We have for the first time found that macrophage cells exchange the internalized LDH NPs with other surrounding ones, which may promote immune responses in an additional way. Moreover, the internalized LDH-antigen NPs significantly facilitate the maturation of immature DCs and enhance cross-presentation of epitope/MHC class I complexes on the DC surface. This research would help understand the NP adjuvant mechanism and further assist the design of new specific NPs as more efficient nano-adjuvants.

The Gully Land Consolidation Project (GLCP) was launched to create more arable land by excavating soil from the slopes on both sides of gullies, combined with simultaneous comprehensive gully prevention and control measures. The purpose of the GLCP is to increase crop production and reduce soil erosion to achieve ecological and agricultural sustainability. In this study, we assess the effects of the GLCP on soil erosion and crop production by studying the BaoChengGou Watershed in the Loess Plateau, primarily by means of high spatial-resolution satellite images (taken by the GF-1 and ZY-3 satellites) combined with the InVEST model and field investigations. Sloping cropland, sparse forestland, and natural grassland are the main land use types in the study area. After implementing the GLCP, consolidated land in the cropland increased by 7.35%, an increase that has come largely at the expense of grassland and forestland. The GLCP has markedly reduced soil erosion in the BaoChengGou Watershed, especially in the sense that soil erosion intensity was also reduced significantly in the project region on the whole, despite intensifying in certain places, such as excavated slopes; furthermore, it has improved crop yields in the study area by 10.9%. Comprehensive measurement shows the GLCP to be scientific, reasonable, and clearly efficacious. This study presents findings regarding the positive significance of the GLCP in promoting ecological and agricultural sustainability in the Loess Plateau.

Abstract Background The adverse effects of early-life tobacco smoke exposure on chronic kidney disease (CKD) risk remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations of early-life tobacco smoke exposure with CKD incidence in adulthood, and further explore the modification effects of physical activity (PA). Methods A total of 352,883 participants were included from the UK Biobank. The information on early-life tobacco smoke exposure was assessed by employing in utero tobacco smoke exposure and age of smoking initiation. Weekly moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was calculated for each individual. Cox proportional hazard regression was fitted to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of CKD risk, and to investigate the modification effects of MVPA. Results CKD incidence significantly increased in participants with in utero tobacco smoke exposure (HR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.12). Compared with never-smokers, we found a monotonic increase in the risk of CKD with smoking initiation across adulthood (HR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.16, 1.27), adolescence (HR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.24, 1.35), and childhood (HR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.25, 1.43) (P trend

Abstract Background Recent studies have found that histone-modified genes play an increasingly important role in tumor progression. Lysine(K) specific demethylase 4A (KDM4A) is a histone lysine-specific demethylase highly expressed in a variety of malignant tumors, data showed that KDM4A was negatively correlated with the Bone Morphogenetic Protein 9 (BMP9) in breast cancer. And previous experiments have demonstrated that exogenous BMP9 significantly inhibits breast cancer development. Materials and methods We detected the expression of KDM4A in breast cancer and the relationship between KDM4A and BMP9 using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and Western blot, and verified the interaction between KDM4A and BMP9 by ChIP experiments. At the same time, we also detected whether KDM4A had effects on the RNA and protein stability of BMP9 using actinomycin D and cycloheximide. Measurement of alpha-ketoglutarate (α-KG) level by ELISA to observe the effect of BMP9 on glutamine metabolism in breast cancer cells. Nucleoplasmic distribution of KDM4A after exogenous BMP9 treatment in breast cancer cells were observed by immunofluorescence staining and Western blot. A subcutaneous xenograft tumor model in nude mice was used to study the therapeutic effects of exogenous BMP9 and KDM4A inhibitor (JIB-04) in breast cancer. CCK-8, conoly formation, Transwell, wound healing, and immunohistochemistry were used to monitor the growth of tumor and cell function. Results We found that KDM4A was abnormally highly expressed in breast cancer, and silenced BMP9 expression by removing histone methyl groups from the BMP9 gene region. Meanwhile, KDM4A could also reduce the stability of BMP9 protein. BMP9 inhibit glutamine metabolism in breast cancer, resulting in a decrease in its product α-KG, is confirmed by ELISA. Altered nucleoplasmic distribution of KDM4A due to decreased α-KG was confirmed by immunofluorescence staining and Western blot. Animal experiments confirm that the combination of exogenous BMP9 and JIB-04 shows significantly better results in breast cancer. Conclusions KDM4A silences BMP9 expression by removing histone methyl groups from the BMP9 gene region, leading to further enhancement of glutamine metabolism, which contributes to malignant tumor progression. In addition, using JIB-04 in combination with exogenous BMP9 could inhibit the malignant progression of breast cancer cells and the growth of tumors more significantly.
