Abstract Background It is difficult to detect the outbreak of emergency infectious disease based on the exiting surveillance system. Here we investigate the utility of the Baidu Search Index, an indicator of how large of a keyword is in Baidu’s search volume, in the early warning and predicting the epidemic trend of COVID-19. Methods The daily number of cases and the Baidu Search Index of 8 keywords (weighted by population) from December 1, 2019 to March 15, 2020 were collected and analyzed with times series and Spearman correlation with different time lag. To predict the daily number of COVID-19 cases using the Baidu Search Index, Zero-inflated negative binomial regression was used in phase 1 and negative binomial regression model was used in phase 2 and phase 3 based on the characteristic of independent variable. Results The Baidu Search Index of all keywords in Wuhan was significantly higher than Hubei (excluded Wuhan) and China (excluded Hubei). Before the causative pathogen was identified, the search volume of “Influenza” and “Pneumonia” in Wuhan increased with the number of new onset cases, their correlation coefficient was 0.69 and 0.59, respectively. After the pathogen was public but before COVID-19 was classified as a notifiable disease, the search volume of “SARS”, “Pneumonia”, “Coronavirus” in all study areas increased with the number of new onset cases with the correlation coefficient was 0.69 ~ 0.89, while “Influenza” changed to negative correlated (rs: -0.56 ~ -0.64). After COVID-19 was closely monitored, the Baidu Search Index of “COVID-19”, “Pneumonia”, “Coronavirus”, “SARS” and “Mask” could predict the epidemic trend with 15 days, 5 days and 6 days lead time, respectively in Wuhan, Hubei (excluded Wuhan) and China (excluded Hubei). The predicted number of cases would increase 1.84 and 4.81 folds, respectively than the actual number of cases in Wuhan and Hubei (excluded Wuhan) from 21 January to 9 February. Conclusion The Baidu Search Index could be used in the early warning and predicting the epidemic trend of COVID-19, but the search keywords changed in different period. Considering the time lag from onset to diagnosis, especially in the areas with medical resources shortage, internet search data can be a highly effective supplement of the existing surveillance system.

Abstract Background This study retrospectively compared short-term clinical outcomes and complications of minimally invasive surgery transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion(MIS-TLIF)and endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion(Endo-LIF))for two-segmental lumbar degenerative disease, aiming to guide spine surgeons in selecting surgical approaches. Methods From January 2019 to December 2023, 30 patients were enrolled,15 in the MIS-TLIF group and 15 in the Endo-LIF group. All patients were followed up for more than 3 months after surgery and the following information was recorded: (1)surgery time, difference in hemoglobin between preoperative and postoperative, surgical costs, first time out of bed after operation, postoperative hospitalization time, postoperative complication; (2) ODI score (The Oswestry Disability Index), leg and back VAS score (Visual Analogue Scale), and lumbar vertebra JOA score (Japanese Orthopaedic Association Scores); (3) MacNab score at final follow-up to assess clinical outcome, CT to evaluate lumbar fusion. Results There were significant differences between the two groups regarding operation time and cost, with the MIS-TLIF group performing significantly better. Intraoperative bleeding was considerably less in the Endo-LIF group compared to the MIS-TLIF group. However, there were no significant differences in the time of the first postoperative ambulation, postoperative hospitalization time, and postoperative complications. There was no significant difference in preoperative VAS, ODI, and JOA between the two surgical groups There were no significant differences in VAS(leg), ODI, and JOA scores between the two groups before and at 1 day,7 days, 1 month, 3 months and final follow-up. However, at 1 day postoperatively, the VAS( back)score in the Endo-LIF group was lower than that in the MIS-TLIF group, and the difference was statistically significant. At the final follow-up, all patients achieved grade III and above according to the Bridwell criteria, and there was no significant difference between the two surgical groups compared to each other. According to the MacNab score at the final follow-up, the excellent rate was 80.00% in the Endo-LIF group and 73.33% in the MIS-TLIF group, with no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion There was no significant difference in short-term efficacy and safety between Endo-LIF and MIS-TLIF for two-segment degenerative lumbar diseases. MIS-TLIF has a shorter operative time and lower costs, while Endo-LIF causes less tissue damage, blood loss, and early postoperative pain, aiding long-term recovery. Both MIS-TLIF and Endo-LIF are promising for treating two-segment lumbar degenerative disease. The choice of a surgical procedure depends on the patient’s financial situation, their ability to tolerate surgery, and the surgeon’s expertise.

Abstract Objective This study analyzes the safety and efficacy of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) treatments for Stage III Kummell’s disease without neurological symptoms, comparing the advantages and disadvantages of these two minimally invasive surgical methods. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 53 patients with non-neurological Stage III Kummell’s disease treated with PVP and PKP at our hospital from December 2018 to January 2023. Patients were divided into PVP (25 cases) and PKP (28 cases) groups based on the surgical method. There were no significant differences in general preoperative data between the two groups (all p > 0.05), ensuring comparability. The study compared surgical duration, volume of bone cement injected, distribution pattern of bone cement, rate of bone cement leakage, and preoperative, postoperative, and final follow-up scores of Visual analogue scale(VAS) and Oswestry disability index(ODI). Additionally, relative anterior height of the injured vertebrae, and Cobb angle of deformity, along with their changes at preoperative, postoperative, and final follow-up stages were calculated and analyzed. Results No significant preoperative differences were observed between the groups (p > 0.05). The PKP group had longer surgeries, higher cement volumes (p 0.05) but improved significantly from preoperative (p 0.05). Conclusion The study evaluates the safety and efficacy of PVP and PKP for Stage III Kummell’s disease without neurological symptoms, comparing the merits of both minimally invasive techniques.

ObjectivesThere is still no study focused on willingness to pay for long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) after it was available on the market in the United States in 2021. Here, we explored the willingness to pay for CAB-LA and associated factors and price elasticity of demand (PED) of CAB-LA among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Guangxi, China.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted. Univariate and multivariate ordinal logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the associated factors of willingness to pay for CAB-LA. PED was used to measure the change in the number of participants willing to pay to a change in price.ResultsA total of 1,006 MSM were recruited, among which 84.1% were aged between 18 and 39 years old. The median (interquartile) of the maximum amount of willing to pay for CAB-LA was 200 (100–500) Chinese yuan (CNY) per month. Most (84.2%) were willing to pay less than 600 CNY per month. The number of participants willing to pay for CAB-LA significantly increased with decrease in the price. When the price (CNY per month) decreased from 600 to 500, 500 to 400, 400 to 300, and 300 to 200, PED was 3.13, 1.64, 1.33, and 1.17, respectively. The maximum amount of willing to pay for CAB-LA was positively associated with younger age (vs. ≥40 years group, 18–24 years group, aOR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.32–2.85; 25–39 year group, aOR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.20–2.42), being high educated (vs. middle school or lower group, high school or college group, aOR: 1.61, 95% CI: 1.06–2.48; bachelor’s degree or above group, aOR: 2.21, 95% CI: 1.41–3.49), monthly income ≥6000 CNY (vs.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the risk factors for postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with traumatic spinal fractures complicated with Spinal Cord Injury(SCI). We conducted a retrospective analysis of 110 patients with traumatic spinal fractures and SCI admitted to our hospital from March 2021 to April 2024. DVT was diagnosed using ultrasound. Patient history, general data, surgical data, laboratory tests, and thromboelastogram (TEG) results were collected. The patients were divided into a DVT group and a non-DVT group according to the results of ultrasound one week after surgery. The risk factors and diagnostic value were analyzed using binary logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves in both univariate and multivariate analyses. Multivariate and ROC analysis results showed that D-dimer, lower extremity, duration of bedrest, and MA values of TEG were independent risk factors for DVT in SCI, with D-dimer having the highest diagnostic value (AUC = 0.883). The AUC values for lower extremity, duration of bedrest, and MA were 0.731, 0.750, and 0.625. In conclusion, Postoperative D-dimer > 5.065 mg/l, lower extremity

Immature fruit abscission of Camellia oleifera (C. oleifera) is a common problem limiting yield increases. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying immature fruit abscission in C. oleifera are unclear. In this study, we systematically investigated changes in the morphological, physiological, and gene expression of fruit abscission zones (FAZs) of soon-to-abscise fruits (M2). We found that fruit abscission before ripening mainly occurs during the August abscission stage of ‘Huashuo’. At the beginning of this stage, the FAZs of M2 have a marked dent, and the separation layer structures are preliminarily formed. Phytohormone analysis showed that the contents of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and jasmonic acid (JA) in the FAZs of M2 were significantly decreased compared with the non-abscised fruits, while the content of trans-zeatin (TZR) was increased. Transcriptome analysis identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) mainly involved in phytohormone metabolism, including ethylene, auxin, JA, and the cis-zeatin signal transduction pathway. There were also many DEGs involved in cell wall catabolism. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) further suggested that the transcription factors NAC100 and ERF114 participate in the immature fruit abscission of C. oleifera. This study provides insights into the fruit abscission mechanism of C. oleifera.

Abstract Internet search data was a useful tool in the pre-warning of COVID-19. However, the lead time and indicators may change over time and space with the new variants appear and massive nucleic acid testing. Since Omicron appeared in late 2021, we collected the daily number of cases and Baidu Search Index (BSI) of seven search terms from 1 January to 30 April, 2022 in 12 provinces/prefectures to explore the variation in China. Two search peaks of “COVID-19 epidemic”, “Novel Coronavirus” and “COVID-19” can be observed. One in January, which showed 3 days lead time in Henan and Tianjin. Another on early March, which occurred 0–28 days ahead of the local epidemic but the lead time had spatial variation. It was 4 weeks in Shanghai, 2 weeks in Henan and 5–8 days in Jilin Province, Jilin and Changchun Prefecture. But it was only 1–3 days in Tianjin, Quanzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province and 0 day in Shenzhen, Shandong Province, Qingdao and Yanbian Prefecture. The BSI was high correlated (rs:0.70–0.93) to the number of cases with consistent epidemiological change trend. The lead time of BSI had spatial and temporal variation and was close related to the strength of nucleic acid testing. The case detection ability should be strengthened when perceiving BSI increase.

Abstract With the widespread use of radars, different types of radar emitters are being used in the real electromagnetic environment. Radar emitter identification (REI) is an important technique in spectrum management. Methods based on deep learning have been successful in REI. However, they are difficult to be updated with signals from newly available categories. Additionally, two issues that must be considered in a real REI task. First, signals from new unknown radar emitters may appear in the identification stage. Hence the model used in REI must have an open‐set recognition capability. Second, obtaining numerous labelled samples in time are difficult in the incremental stage of the model. Thus, it is important to keep the model performance stable under conditions of small samples. To solve these problems, a one‐dimensional neural network is designed combined with ArcFace loss in the initial training stage to reserve more embedding space for future new classes, thereby facilitating the update of the model and open‐set recognition. An unbiased cosine similarity classifier was adopted, and the historical categories were memorised by their prototypes. When a new category is added, the prototype was calculated and the classifier weights were updated. The proposed method can identify unknown classes and add them to the model when given new labels, thereby resulting in an increase of the model's identifiable types. Extensive experiments were performed. The results show that the proposed model is highly efficient and requires small sample sizes, thereby making it suitable for REI.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a significant cause of foodborne illness, and its incidence worldwide is on the rise. It is thus imperative to develop a straightforward and efficient method for typing strains of this pathogen. In this study, we conducted a pangenome analysis of 75 complete genomes of V. parahaemolyticus and identified the core gene mtlA with the highest degree of variation, which distinguished 44 strains and outperformed traditional seven-gene-based MLST when combined with aer, another core gene with high degree of variation. The mtlA gene had higher resolution to type strains with a close relationship compared to the traditional MLST genes in the phylogenetic tree built by core genomes. Strong positive selection was also detected in the gene mtlA (ω > 1), representing adaptive and evolution in response to the environment. Therefore, the panel of gene mtlA and aer may serve as a tool for the typing of V. parahaemolyticus, potentially contributing to the prevention and control of this foodborne disease.

Abstract Purpose Repeated exposures to sevoflurane could induce epigenetic modifications in specific brain regions and cognitive impairments in the immature mice. Conflicting findings make neurobehavioral manifestations intricate and potential mechanisms elusive. Influence of neonatal anesthesia with sevoflurane on the expression of synaptic scaffold proteins and neuronal activity remains to be determined. Methods C57BL/6 male and female mice in breeding ages were used to produce next generation. The offspring male mice were randomly scheduled to receive 3.0% sevoflurane plus 60% oxygen for 2 h daily at postnatal day (P) 6–8. Three-chambered social paradigm was used to test social affiliation and social memory. Morris water maze was used to test learning and memory. Whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS), differentially methylated regions (DMRs) and KEGG enrichment analysis were performed to screen target gene in sequence context of CG. RT-PCR and immunoblotting analysis were used to assess expression of the Shank gene family, as well as DNA methylases. Results The male mice undergoing sevoflurane anesthesia at P6-8 showed diminished preference for novel conspecific and prolonged escape latency and decreased platform-crossing times. The sevoflurane-exposed mice showed reduced mRNA and protein levels of the Shank2 gene. KEGG analysis disclosed the role of DNA hypermethylation of Shank2 gene in the pathway of glutamatergic synapse. In addition, sevoflurane anesthesia reduced mRNA and protein levels of the TET3 enzyme. Conclusion Repeated exposures to sevoflurane in neonatal period could impair social recognition memory and spatial reference memory in the male mice. Reduction of hippocampal SHANK2 protein could contribute to sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity in the immature mice. Reduction of the TET3 enzyme should be responsible for DNA hypermethylation-related silencing of the Shank2 gene. Graphical Abstract

The intricacies of foundation pit engineering often result in alterations to the surrounding environment, posing potential threats to the safe operation of nearby buildings and pile foundations. This study employs finite element numerical simulation to scrutinize the influence of vacuum preloading pressure, preloading duration, excavation slope ratio, excavation duration, and retaining pile wall depth on the stress and deformation of existing plain concrete pile foundations. The findings reveal that the impacts of excavation are primarily absorbed by both proximal and distal piles in relation to the pit. Moreover, elevating vacuum preloading pressure and extending the preloading duration during dewatering can lead to increased internal forces and displacement of the piles. Changes in excavation slope ratio exhibit minimal effects, while prolonged excavation duration can shift internal forces from predominantly positive to negative, with negligible impact on horizontal displacement. Importantly, augmenting the depth of the retaining pile wall embedding effectively mitigates the effects of pit excavation.

Abstract The clarity of taste sensation interaction is a key basis for promoting the food sensory science research and its application to the beverage and food additive industries. This study explored the synergy and antagonism effect of sucrose-citric acid mixture and established an optimized method to determine the human sweetness and sourness interactive response. Sucrose-citric acid mixtures were evaluated by the “close type” question. According to the sensory difference strength curves and Weber–Fechner law, citric acid increased the sucrose’s absolute threshold (0.424–0.624%) and weber fraction (20.5–33.0%). Meanwhile, sucrose increased citric acid’s absolute threshold (0.0057–0.0082%) and decreased its weber fraction (17.96–9.53%). By fitting absolute threshold and weber fraction variation equations, the sweet–sour taste sensory strength variation models (SSTVM) were derived, which could be used to explain the synergy and antagonism effect of sweet–sour taste. According to the SSTVM, the interactive response to sweet–sour taste could be quantitatively calculated. The high coincidence between SSTVM and human evaluation (1.02% of relative error) indicated that it could be applied in the food industry, health management, and intelligent sensory science.

Abstract It is difficult for a receiver to intercept the signals from a radar system that can emit low probability of intercept (LPI) polyphase coded signals. The traditional Wigner Hough transform (WHT) algorithm requires a large amount of computation and takes a long time to estimate the parameters of the LPI radar polyphase coded signals. To address this problem, an iterative angle search (IAS) algorithm, which when used in combination with the WHT algorithm significantly reduces the computational cost is proposed. When the signal‐to‐noise ratio is in the range of −4 to 20 dB, the carrier frequency, number of subcodes, and number of cycles of the carrier frequency per subcode of five polyphase coded signals, namely, Frank, P1, P2, P3, and P4, are accurately estimated in simulation experiments. Based on the selected IAS algorithm parameters, the estimation accuracy of the proposed method is the same as that of the traditional WHT algorithm. However, the operation time is only 5.14% of that of the traditional method. The IAS algorithm has certain application prospects. Experiments indicate that the proposed algorithm provides excellent performance and can rapidly and accurately estimate the parameters of LPI polyphase codes.

Background Hippocampus impairment is a common condition encountered in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Several studies have investigated this phenomenon. However, its molecular mechanism remains unclear. Methods In this study, Illumina RNA-seq technology was used to determine the gene expression profile in mice hippocampus after TBI. We then conducted bioinformatics analysis to identify the altered gene expression signatures and mechanisms related to TBI-induced pathology in the hippocampus. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot were adopted to verify the sequencing results. Results The controlled cortical impact was adopted as the TBI model. Hippocampal specimens were removed for sequencing. Bioinformatics analysis identified 27 upregulated and 17 downregulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in post-TBI mouse models. Potential biological functions of the genes were determined via Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA)-based Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses, which suggested a series of functional changes in the nervous system. Specifically, the nucleoporin 62 (Nup62) DEG was discussed and verified. Gene ontology biological process enriched analysis suggests that the cell division was upregulated significantly. The present study may be helpful for the treatment of impaired hippocampus after TBI in the future.

Yeast β-glucan (YG) possess an extensive range of biological activities, such as the inhibition of oxidation, but the poor water solubility of macromolecular YG limits its application. In this study, through the combined degradation of ultrasonic waves and H2O2, and the optimization of the main process parameters for solubilizing YG by response surface methodology (RSM), a new product of YGUH was generated. The molecular weight, structural characteristics and degradation kinetics before and after solubilization were evaluated. The results showed that the optimal solubilization conditions were reaction time: 4 h, ultrasonic power: 3 W/mL, H2O2 concentration: 24 %. Under these conditions, ultrasound-assisted H2O2 increased the solubility (from 13.60 % to 70.00 %) and reduced molecular weight (from 6.73 × 106 Da to 1.22 × 106 Da). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Congo red (CR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that ultrasound-assisted H2O2 increased the conformation's flexibility greatly, without changing the main structure of YG. More importantly, solubilization of YG improved free radical scavenging activity with YGUH exhibiting the highest levels of DPPH and ABTS+ free radical scavenging activity. These results revealed that ultrasound-assisted H2O2 degradation could be a suitable way to increase the solubility of YG for producing value-added YG.

In this paper, an integrated forecast method is proposed based on multi-resources data, which improves the maximum deviation similarity criterion (MDSC) of time-segment BP neural network. The existing short-term load forecast methods for power systems will lead to the low accuracy or even failure of the load prediction method since the multi-stage load change and weather fluctuation factors are not considered. The improved similar day category screening method with the time-segment BP neural network model is employed to deal with the above problem in this paper, where a regional load characteristic law is used to divide the load into seven time periods such that a time-segment BP neural network model is proposed. Based on the feature vector and the real-time meteorological data of the forecast day, the trained forecast model can provide the load value of the forecast day and overcome the restriction of the historical load data. Meanwhile, the prediction accuracy and the training time are also improved under the fluctuating meteorological conditions. Finally, a load forecast of a certain area is given to show the prediction accuracy of different types of days can reach more than 96%,illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

A great number of pediatric patients undergoing varied procedures make neonatal surgery plus anesthesia become a matter of great concern owing to underlying neurotoxicity in developing brain. The authors set out to assess long-term effects of surgery plus anesthesia in mouse model. Six-day-old C57BL/6 mice were randomized to receive either anesthesia with 3% sevoflurane, abdominal surgery under the same anesthesia, or the control condition. These mice were examined of learning and memory at juvenile age in Morris water maze test. The brain tissues of mice were harvested for Western blot analysis, including purinergic receptors P2X family, CaMKII and NF-κB. Another battery of mice were administered with inhibitors of P2RX2/3 (e.g., A317491) into hippocampal dentate gyrus before behavioral testing. We found that neonatal surgery plus anesthesia, but not sevoflurane anesthesia alone, impaired the learning and memory of juvenile mice, as evidenced by delayed escape latency and reduced platform-crossing times. Immunoblotting analysis showed that behavioral abnormalities were associated with increased levels of P2RX2, phosphorylated-CaMKIIβ and activated NF-κB in mouse hippocampus. Injection of A317491 ameliorated the impaired learning and memory of juvenile mice undergoing neonatal surgery plus anesthesia, and it also mitigated the neonatal surgery-induced signaling enhancement of P2RX2/CaMKII/NF-κB. Together, these results indicate that neonatal surgery plus anesthesia may cause long-term cognitive dysfunction, with potential mechanism of increasing P2RX2 and downstream signaling of phosphorylated-CaMKII and NF-κB. Our findings will promote more studies to assess detrimental effects of surgery and accompanying inflammation, diverse anesthetics and even sleeping deprivation on mouse neurodevelopment and neurobehavioral performance.

Most multiphase flow separation detection methods used commonly in oilfields are low in efficiency and accuracy, and have data delay. An online multiphase flow detection method is proposed based on magnetic resonance technology, and its supporting device has been made and tested in lab and field. The detection technology works in two parts: measure phase holdup in static state and measure flow rate in flowing state. Oil-water ratio is first measured and then gas holdup. The device is composed of a segmented magnet structure and a dual antenna structure for measuring flowing fluid. A highly compact magnetic resonance spectrometer system and intelligent software are developed. Lab experiments and field application show that the online detection system has the following merits: it can measure flow rate and phase holdup only based on magnetic resonance technology; it can detect in-place transient fluid production at high frequency and thus monitor transient fluid production in real time; it can detect oil, gas and water in a full range at high precision, the detection isn't affected by salinity and emulsification. It is a green, safe and energy-saving system.

Aiming at the problem of poor performance of the classification model in the case of unintentional phase modulation on pulse (UPMOP) to achieve radar specific emitter identification,a method for radar specific emitter identification with long and short-term memory and full convolutional networks (LSTM-FCN) was proposed.Firstly,a simplified observation model of the intrapulse signal phase considering the intentional modulation was presented,and the observation phase sequence was deramp to extract the noisy estimate of the UPMOP.Then Bezier curve was utilized to fit the UPMOP to reduce the influence of noise and obtain a more accurate description of UPMOP.Finally,the LSTM-FCN was used to extract the joint features of UPMOP sequence to realize the radar specific emitter automatic identification.Both the simulation experiments and the measured data experiments verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.Moreover,the proposed algorithm has high identification accuracy and short time consumption.

The antibiotic diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) is used in combination with other antibiotics as a first line treatment for leprosy. DDS has been previously reported to extend lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans through inhibition of pyruvate kinase and decreased mitochondrial function. Here we report an alternative mechanism of action by which DDS promotes longevity in C. elegans by reducing folate production by the microbiome. This results in altered methionine cycle metabolite levels mimicking the effects of metformin and lifespan extension that is dependent on the starvation- and hypoxia-induced flavin containing monoxygenase, FMO-2.

Frequency hopping (FH) signal has been widely used in military and civilian fields because of its superior anti-jamming performance. Meanwhile, its natural characteristics, i.e., hopped carrier frequency, brings a great challenge to the reconnaissance of FH emitters. To locate a high-speed moving FH emitter, the estimation of range difference (RD) and range rate difference (RRD) is a key process in passive localization. This paper proposes a joint RD and RRD estimation algorithm with the consideration of range migration (RM) during observation time. In this method, a new operation named frequency reversing transform is first presented to remove the random phase of the FH signal. Then, RD and RRD can be coherently estimated after RM correction via the scaled Fourier transform. This method accomplishes the RD and RRD estimation without knowing the hopped carrier frequencies of received FH signals, and it can be fast implemented by complex multiplications, fast Fourier transform (FFT) and inverse FFT operations without any searching process. Numerical experiments indicate that compared with several representative methods, the proposed estimation method achieves a better anti-noise performance with lower computational cost.

As a precious resource, wetlands support human life in various profound ways, either explicitly or implicitly. However, the values of wetlands have not been sufficiently recognized and greatly appreciated. Their management approaches are often sectoral, and wise use of wetlands is still more of a catchphrase than a well-used management practice. This paper presents a cross-sectoral case study for the evaluation of the primary management practices in a Ramsar-registered wetland in Japan. It employed a literature review, field and laboratory experiments, and a questionnaire survey as well for assessing the wetland conditions and identifying management problems. It revealed that the management of the wetland is still flood regulation–oriented, without sufficient consideration of bird habitats, and the water level drawdown operation for Lake Yanaka inside the wetland may lead to mass fish deaths. Furthermore, the reed burning practice is effective in maintaining the plant structure in the wetland but controversial from different perspectives. Moreover, the questionnaire survey results indicated that the public were not well informed of the wetland conditions and not convinced of the appropriateness of reed burning. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the registration under the Ramsar Convention did not lead to new strategies for the conservation and wise use of the wetland.

Aiming at the shortcomings of the research on individual identification technology of emitters, which is primarily based on theoretical simulation and lack of verification equipment to conduct external field measurements, an emitter individual identification system based on Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast is designed. On one hand, the system completes the individual feature extraction of the signal preamble. On the other hand, it realizes decoding of the transmitter’s individual identity information and generates an individual recognition training data set, on which we can train the recognition network to achieve individual signal recognition. For the collected signals, six parameters were extracted as individual features. To reduce the feature dimensions, a Bessel curve fitting method is used for four of the features. The spatial distribution of the Bezier curve control points after fitting is taken as an individual feature. The processed features are classified with multiple classifiers, and the classification results are fused using the improved Dempster–Shafer evidence theory. Field measurements show that the average individual recognition accuracy of the system reaches 88.3%, which essentially meets the requirements.

Background Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common neurological emergency observed in hospitals. A considerable number of patients suffer from long-term disabilities after TBI. This study aimed to identify altered gene expression signatures and mechanisms related to TBI-induced chronic neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Methods An integrated analysis was performed using published RNA-sequencing studies to determine TBI-induced differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Based on the DEG data, functional annotation, signal-net, and transcription factor analyses were conducted to understand the mechanism of chronic neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration induced after TBI. Results Two datasets were obtained using the Gene Expression Omnibus database, of which, 6,513 DEGs were identified (6,464 upregulated and 49 downregulated). Positive regulation of biological process, positive regulation of cellular process, nucleus, and heterocyclic compound binding were Gene Ontology terms significantly enriched in post-TBI rat models. Leukocyte transendothelial migration, chemokine signaling pathway, neurotrophin signaling pathway, and longevity-regulating pathway were significantly enriched after TBI. With regard to the signal-net analysis, FOXO3, DGKZ and ILK were considered the most critical genes derived using high–betweenness centrality calculation. A total of 44 TFs, including FOXO1, SRY and KLF4, were predicted to play an important role in the upregulation of gene expression. Using integrated bioinformatics analysis, TBI was found to be associated with a significant inflammatory response and neurodegeneration. FOXO3, apolipoprotein (APOE), microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT), and TREM2 were probably associated with the TBI pathological process. The mitochondrial electron transport chain may be associated with neurodegeneration in patients with TBI, serving as a potential therapeutic target.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of disability and mortality worldwide, in part resulting from secondary apoptosis of neurons in peri-contusion areas. Serpina3k, a serine protease inhibitor, has been shown to inhibit apoptosis in injury models. In this study, we investigated the anti-apoptotic function of serpina3k in vivo using a mouse model of TBI, as well as the underlying neuroprotective mechanism in vitro using the SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell line. TBI was induced in adult male C57BL/6 mice using controlled cortical impact. Serpina3k protein was intravenously administered at a concentration of 0.5 mg/kg twice daily for up to 14 days. SH-SY5Y cells were subjected to biaxial stretch injury and then treated with different concentrations of serpina3k. We found that endogenous serpina3k protein levels were elevated in peri-contusion areas of the mouse brain following TBI. Serpina3k-treated mice had fewer apoptotic neurons, lower levels of oxidative stress, and showed greater recovery of neurological deficits relative to vehicle-treated mice. Meanwhile, in the SH-SY5Y cell injury model, serpina3k at an optimal concentration (150 nM) inhibited the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species, abrogated changes of the mitochondrial membrane potential, and reduced the phospho-extracellular regulated protein kinases (p-ERK)/ERK, phospho-P38 (p-P38)/P38, B cell lymphoma (Bcl)-2-associated X protein/Bcl-2, and cleaved caspase-3/caspase-3 ratios, thereby reducing the apoptosis rate. These results demonstrate that serpina3k exerts a neuroprotective function following TBI and thus has therapeutic potential.

To avoid decline of FDOA estimation precision caused by relative Doppler companding, Doppler rate has to be considered and estimated jointly with TDOA, phase, and FDOA. However, CRLB of the joint estimation is still unclear. This study addresses on derivation of the CRLB. First, the joint estimation model is constructed. Then, the signal-specific CRLB for any type of signal and a simplified CRLB for stationary and constant-envelope signal are derived, respectively. Finally, as a verification, the derived bound is compared with previous bounds for the special cases of TDOA, phase, and FDOA estimation, which shows that authors’ bound is reasonable. In addition to the conventional scenarios of TDOA, phase and FDOA estimation, their bound can also indicate the error characteristic of Doppler rate, which can be used to evaluate estimation performance and forecast location accuracy using Doppler rate.

Mitochondrial dysfunction can increase oxidative stress and extend lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans. Homeostatic mechanisms exist to cope with disruptions to mitochondrial function that promote cellular health and organismal longevity. Previously, we determined that decreased expression of the cytosolic pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) enzyme transaldolase activates the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) and extends lifespan. Here we report that transaldolase (tald-1) deficiency impairs mitochondrial function in vivo, as evidenced by altered mitochondrial morphology, decreased respiration, and increased cellular H2O2 levels. Lifespan extension from knockdown of tald-1 is associated with an oxidative stress response involving p38 and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) MAPKs and a starvation-like response regulated by the transcription factor EB (TFEB) homolog HLH-30. The latter response promotes autophagy and increases expression of the flavin-containing monooxygenase 2 (fmo-2). We conclude that cytosolic redox established through the PPP is a key regulator of mitochondrial function and defines a new mechanism for mitochondrial regulation of longevity.

In practical applications, the assumption of omnidirectional elements is not effective in general, which leads to the direction-dependent mutual coupling (MC). Under this condition, the performance of traditional calibration algorithms suffers. This paper proposes a new self-calibration method based on the time-frequency distributions (TFDs) in the presence of direction-dependent MC. Firstly, the time-frequency (TF) transformation is used to calculate the space-time-frequency distributions (STFDs) matrix of received signals. After that, the estimated steering vector and corresponding noise subspace are estimated by the steps of noise removing, single-source TF points extracting and clustering. Then according to the transformation relationship between the MC coefficients, steering vector and MC matrix, we deduce a set of linear equations. Finally, with two-step alternating iteration, the equations are solved by least square method in order to estimate DOA and MC coefficients. Simulations results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve direction-dependent MC self-calibration and outperforms the existing algorithms.
