Abstract

We show how correlation functions of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain without magnetic field in the anti-ferromagnetic ground state can be explicitly calculated using information contained in the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation [qKZ]. We find several fundamental relations which the inhomogeneous correlations should fulfill. On the other hand, it turns out that these relations can fix the form of the correlations uniquely. Actually, applying this idea, we have obtained all the correlation functions on five sites. Particularly by taking the homogeneous limit, we have got the analytic form of the fourth-neighbor pair correlator < S_j^z S_{j+4}^z >., Comment: 31 pages

Abstract

The asymptotics of the equal-time one-particle Green's function for the half-filled one-dimensional Hubbard model is studied at finite temperature. We calculate its correlation length by evaluating the largest and the second largest eigenvalues of the Quantum Transfer Matrix (QTM). In order to allow for the genuinely fermionic nature of the one-particle Green's function, we employ the fermionic formulation of the QTM based on the fermionic R-operator of the Hubbard model. The purely imaginary value of the second largest eigenvalue reflects the k_F (= pi/2) oscillations of the one-particle Green's function at half-filling. By solving numerically the Bethe Ansatz equations with Trotter numbers up to N=10240, we obtain accurate data for the correlation length at finite temperatures down into the very low temperature region. The correlation length remains finite even at T=0 due to the existence of the charge gap. Our numerical data confirm Stafford and Millis' conjecture regarding an analytic expression for the correlation length at T=0., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We study the Emptiness Formation Probability (EFP) for the spin 1/2 XXZ spin chain. EFP P(n) detects a formation of ferromagnetic string of the length n in the ground state. It is expected that EFP decays in a Gaussian way for large strings P(n) ~ n^{-gamma} C^{-n^2}. Here, we propose the explicit expressions for the rate of Gaussian decay C as well as for the exponent gamma. In order to confirm the validity of our formulas, we employed an ab initio simulation technique of the density-matrix renormalization group to simulate XXZ spin chain of sufficient length. Furthermore, we performed Monte-Carlo integration of the Jimbo-Miwa multiple integral for P(n). Those numerical results for P(n) support our formulas fairly definitely., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We study spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXX antiferromagnet. The spectrum of the Hamiltonian was found by Hans Bethe in 1931. We study the probability of formation of ferromagnetic string in the antiferromagnetic ground state, which we call emptiness formation probability P(n). This is the most fundamental correlation function. We prove that for the short strings it can be expressed in terms of the Riemann zeta function with odd arguments, logarithm ln 2 and rational coefficients. This adds yet another link between statistical mechanics and number theory. We have obtained an analytical formula for P(5) for the first time. We have also calculated P(n) numerically by the Density Matrix Renormalization Group. The results agree quite well with the analytical ones. Furthermore we study asymptotic behavior of P(n) at finite temperature by Quantum Monte-Carlo simulation. It also agrees with our previous analytical results., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

To this end we use the Quantum Transfer Matrix (QTM) technique developed in \cite{AK} which results in a set of non-linear integral equations (NLIE). In the case of the largest eigenvalue the solution to these equations yields the free energy and by modifications of the paths of integration the next-leading eigenvalues and hence the correlation lengths are obtained. At finite field $h>0$ and sufficiently high temperature $T$ the next-leading eigenvalue is unique and given by a 1-string solution to the QTM taking real and negative values thus resulting into exponentially decaying correlations with antiferromagnetic oscillations. At sufficiently low temperatures a different behaviour sets in where the next-leading eigenvalues of QTM are given by a complex conjugate pair of eigenvalues resulting into incommensurate oscillations. The above scenario is the result of analytical and numerical investigations of the QTM establishing a well defined crossover temperature $T_c(h)$ at which the 1-string eigenvalue to the QTM gets degenerate with the 2-string solution. Among other things we find a simple particle-hole picture for the excitations of the QTM and we make contact with the dressed charge formulation of CFT., Comment: 9 pages, 10 eps figures, to be published in the Proceedings of the Baxter Conference held at Canberra 13-19 February 2000

Abstract

Background: Myocardial bridging (MB), also known as a tunneled artery, is a congenital anomaly that can be readily diagnosed with multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT). With the advent of dual-source CT (DSCT), it may be feasible to evaluate dynamic changes of MB throughout the entire cardiac cycle. Purpose: To determine the feasibility of dynamic evaluation of MB using DSCT. Material and Methods: Forty-eight patients with MB of the left anterior descending artery diagnosed with multiplanar reconstruction on DSCT were included in this study. Multiphase reconstructions were performed for every subject. Image quality was assessed using a four-point scale (4 = excellent; 3 = good; 2 = adequate; 1 = not assessable). Systolic and diastolic images with optimal image quality were selected. Milking effect, defined as the narrowing of the tunneled artery during systole and its dilatation during diastole, was recorded. The stenosis rate of MB was computed. Results: The optimal systolic and diastolic phases occurred between 40% and 70% of the R-R interval (range 20-80% of R-R interval). The image quality scores of all segments in systole and diastole were higher than or equal to 3. Diameter changes of tunneled vessel under MB in systole and diastole indicated milking effect, visualized on conventional coronary angiography (CAG). Average percentage of narrowing of the MB was 36±14%. Conclusion: High-quality systolic and diastolic images can be acquired using DSCT. 49. Thermodynamic consequences of grafting enhanced affinity toward the mutated antigen onto an antibody. The case of anti-lysozyme antibody, HyHEL-10.

Abstract

In order to address the mechanism of enhancement of the affinity of an antibody toward an antigen from a thermodynamic viewpoint, anti-hen lysozyme (HEL) antibody HyHEL-10, which also recognize the mutated antigen turkey lysozyme (TEL) with reduced affinity, was examined. Grafting high affinity toward TEL onto HyHEL-10 was performed by saturation mutagenesis into four residues (Tyr(53), Ser(54), Ser(56), and Tyr(58)) in complementarity-determining region 2 of the heavy chain (CDR-H2) followed by selection with affinity for TEL. Several clones enriched have a Phe residue at site 58. Thermodynamic analyses showed that the clones selected had experienced a greater than 3-fold affinity increase toward TEL in comparison with wild-type Fv, originating from an increase in negative enthalpy change. Substitution of HyHEL-10 HTyr(58) with Phe led to the increase in negative enthalpy change and to almost identical affinity for TEL in comparison with mutants selected, indicating that mutations at other sites decrease the entropy loss despite little contribution to the affinity for TEL. These results suggest that the affinity of an antibody toward the antigen is enhanced by the increase in enthalpy change by some limited mutation, and excess entropy loss due to the mutation is decreased by other energetically neutral mutations.

50. Crystal structure of anti-Hen egg white lysozyme antibody (HyHEL-10) Fv-antigen complex. Local structural changes in the protein antigen and water-mediated interactions of Fv-antigen and light chain-heavy chain interfaces.

Abstract

In order to address the recognition mechanism of the fragments of antibody variable regions, termed Fv, toward their target antigen, an x-ray crystal structure of an anti-hen egg white lysozyme antibody (HyHEL-10) Fv fragment complexed with its cognate antigen, hen egg white lysozyme (HEL), was solved at 2.3 A. The overall structure of the complex is similar to that reported in a previous article dealing with the Fab fragment-HEL complex (PDB ID code,). However, the areas of Fv covered by HEL upon complex formation increased by about 100 A(2) in comparison with the Fab-HEL complex, and two local structural differences were observed in the heavy chain of the variable region (VH). In addition, small but significant local structural changes were observed in the antigen, HEL. The x-ray data permitted the identification of two water molecules between the VH and HEL and six water molecules retained in the interface between the antigen and the light chain complementarity determining regions (CDRs) 2 and 3 (CDR-L2 and CDR-L3). These water molecules bridge the antigen-antibody interface through hydrogen bond formation in the VL-HEL interface. Eleven water molecules were found to complete the imperfect VH-VL interface, suggesting that solvent molecules mediate the stabilization of interaction between variable regions. These results suggest that the unfavorable effect of deletion of constant regions on the antigen-antibody interaction is compensated by an increase in favorable interactions, including structural changes in the antigen-antibody interface and solvent-mediated hydrogen bond formation upon complex formation, which may lead to a minimum decreased affinity of the antibody Fv fragment toward its antigen.
